Vegetation degeneration has become a serious ecological problem for karst regions in the Anthropocene. According to the deficiency of long serial and high-resolution analysis of karst vegetation, this paper reconstructed the variation of vegetation landscape changes from 1987 to 2020 in a typical karst region of China. Using Landsat time series data, the dynamic changes and driving factors of natural karst vegetation were identified at the landscape scale. On the premise of considering the time-lag effect, the main climatic factors that influence vegetation growth were presented at the interannual timescale. Then, the approach of residual analysis was adopted to distinguish the dominant factors affecting vegetation growth. Results of trend analysis revealed that 21.5% of the forestland showed an overall significant decline in vegetation growth, while only 1.5% showed an increase in vegetation growth during the study period. Precipitation and radiation were the dominant meteorological factors influencing vegetation at the interannual timescale, as opposed to temperature. More than 70% of the natural vegetation growth was dominated by climatic factors. The area percentage of negative human impact has increased gradually since 2009 and reached 18.5% in 2020, indicating the currently serious situation of vegetation protection; fortunately, in recent years, human disturbances on vegetation have been mitigated in karst areas with the promotion of ecological conservation and restoration projects. Acute paraquat poisoning resulting from multiple organ failure usually has a high mortality rate. Liver and kidney, as the key oranges of paraquat detoxification and elimination, their injuries may suppress toxin excretion and enhance the toxicity of paraquat in other organs and worsen the prognosis. Therefore, we intended to explore the prognostic value of liver and kidney function parameters, and further evaluate their correlation with a more stable index urine‐to‐plasma paraquat (urine paraquat concentrations/plasma paraquat concentrations) instead of considering paraquat concentrations in plasma or urine alone. The study included 33 patients with acute paraquat poisoning admitted to four centres in China from January 2018 to December 2019. Seventeen patients (10 male/7 female) survived, whereas 16 patients (7 male/9 female, 48.48%) died from paraquat poisoning. Alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and the blood urea nitrogen (BUN) represent liver and kidney function parameters, respectively. The ratio of urine‐to‐plasma paraquat is negatively correlated with ALT (r = −0.94, P = 0.02) and BUN (r = −0.82, P = 0.03). For receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) analysis, ALT, BUN and urine‐to‐plasma paraquat have an AUC over 0.80. The study shows that the functional indexes of liver and kidney, as well as the ratio of urine‐to‐plasma paraquat, could be considered for evaluating the extent of organ injury and excretion rate of paraquat. Climate change and emissions rates of contaminants are expected to affect distribution and fate of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in the environment, however, studies on these combined factors are rare. In this study, Perfluorooctane Sulfonate (PFOS) is used as an example to assess how those two factors synthetically affect fate and disposition of POPs in the Bohai Rim of China by using the Berkeley-Trent-Urban-Rural (BETR-Urban-Rural) model. We set up three climate change scenarios and four emission scenarios to conduct the simulations. The results show that climate change could have significant effects on the transport and fate of PFOS mainly including advection, inter-compartmental transfer under the “worst case” emission scenario. For most grids, a remarkable decrease in concentrations of PFOS are predicted for fresh water and urban soil in the future, with precipitation and temperature being predominant factors, whilst for coastal water and rural soil, an increasing trend is predicted. Additionally, predicted sum of sources to the Bohai Sea increases greater than removals from the Bohai Sea in the future, adding evidence that concentrations of PFOS in coastal water will increase more in the future. Under scenarios of reduced emissions and climate change, concentrations of PFOS in each compartment decreased more rapidly over time. Environmental pollution and food safety are two of the most important issues of our time. Soil and water pollution, in particular, have historically impacted on food safety which represents an important threat to human health. Nowhere has that situation been more complex and challenging than in China, where a combination of pollution and an increasing food safety risk have affected a large part of the population. Water scarcity, pesticide over-application, and chemical pollutants are considered to be the most important factors impacting on food safety in China. Inadequate quantity and quality of surface water resources in China have led to the long-term use of waste-water irrigation to fulfill the water requirements for agricultural production. In some regions this has caused serious agricultural land and food pollution, especially for heavy metals. It is important, therefore, that issues threatening food safety such as combined pesticide residues and heavy metal pollution are addressed to reduce risks to human health. The increasing negative effects on food safety from water and soil pollution have put more people at risk of carcinogenic diseases, potentially contributing to ‘cancer villages’ which appear to correlate strongly with the main food producing areas. Currently in China, food safety policies are not integrated with soil and water pollution management policies. Here, a comprehensive map of both soil and water pollution threats to food safety in China is presented and integrated policies addressing soil and water pollution for achieving food safety are suggested to provide a holistic approach. This study investigated the dissolved trace metal contamination levels of Zn, Sr, B, Al, Ba, Fe, Mn, Li, V, Be, Cd, Cr, Cu, Mo, Ni, Se, and Pb in 23 surface waters of the Yellow River Delta (YRD) in China. Coefficients of variation with 66–260% reflected large spatial variations of concentrations of metals. Compared to drinking water guidelines established by the World Health Organization and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the primary trace metal pollution components (Al, B, V, and Zn) were above drinking water standard levels by 82.6%, 47.8%, 52.2%, and 52.2%, respectively. Preliminary risk assessments were determined via the Hazard Quotient (HQ) to evaluate the human health risk of these metals. HQingestionof V indicated potential deleterious health effects for residents. Hierarchical cluster results revealed that clusters 1, 2, and 3 were primarily affected by pollution from industrial and domestic activities, natural and agriculture activities, and oil fields, respectively. Leakage is a major factor impacting the evolution of flood in a highly permeable river. By integrating a mathematical model with data provided by a monitoring database, a flood routing system was developed for the Dagu River in China. The aim of this study was to calculate the leakage discharge and to discuss the effect of leakage for flood modeling within a high-leakage riverbed. This system was implemented for application of a flood-diversion experiment in 2003, which accessed data automatically and used estimated coefficients to calculate leakage discharge. The results showed that simulated discharge values fit well with the measured values, with an average relative error less than 10%, and the leakage average relative error was approximately 2%. The infiltration experiments showed that the leakage coefficient could be treated as a constant when the dynamics in the initial phase of a short flood event was stimulated. The initial water level and leakage and roughness coefficients were the main factors required to accurately determine the discharge of river seepage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Long-term exposure to water contaminated with pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) can cause potential harm to humans and ecosystems. Industrial manufacturing discharge is the source for PPCPs emission into natural water. Since industrial source discharge inventories and environmental fate information of PPCPs are lacking in China, a fast low-cost estimation method of PPCPs industrial source discharge is proposed in this paper. The estimated results are fitting well with the existing field monitoring data, and shows that China's highly industrialized eastern provinces have significantly higher discharge intensity than western and northern provinces. This study provides a valuable approach for rapid response to PPCPs emergency. Emission intensity and climate change control the transport flux and fate of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in multiple environmental compartments. This study applied a multimedia model (BETR model) to explore alternations in the spatio-temporal trends of concentrations and transport flux of benzopyrene (BaP), phenanthrene (Phe), perfluorooctane sulfonates (PFOS) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the Chaohu watershed, located in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, China in response to changes in source emissions and climate. The potential historic and future risks of these pollutants also were assessed. The results suggest that current trends in concentrations and transport were similar to that of their emissions between 2005 and 2018. During the next 100 years, temporal trends and spatial patterns were not predicted to change significantly, which is consistent with climate change. Based on sensitivity and correlation analyses, climate change had significant effects on multi-media concentrations and transport fluxes of BaP, Phe, PFOS and PCBs, and rainfall intensity was the predominant controlling factor. Risk quotients (RQs) of BaP and Phe-in soil increased from 0.42 to 0.95 and 0.06 to 0.35, respectively, from 2005 to 2090, indicating potential risks. The RQs of the other examined contaminants exhibited little potential risk in soil, water, or sediment. Based on spatial patterns, it was inferred that the ecosystem around Lake Chaohu is the most at risk. The study provides insights needed for local pollution control of POPs in the Chaohu watershed. Perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) have been ubiquitously distributed in water environment worldwide for a long time, especially in the estuaries and coastal areas. In this study, the distribution characteristics of 12 PFAAs in 91 main river estuaries along the entire coast of China were analyzed for the first time, and the riverine PFAAs fluxes into the coastal marine environment were estimated. Based on a mini-review, the PFAAs pollution in the coast of China at a global scale was evaluated, which was intended to reveal the overall level of PFAAs and to provide a science basis for strengthening environmental management along the coast of China. The results showed that perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA), and perfluorobutane sulfonic acid (PFBS) were dominant in the whole coastal region, which indicated the usage of PFAAs was changing from long-chain PFAAs to short-chain substitutes in China. With regard to the spatial distribution, the high PFAAs concentrations were found in the coastal areas of south Bohai Sea, Shandong Province from the north while those in the south were generally lower when taking the Qinling Mountain and Huaihe River as a dividing line. The estimated PFAAs riverine mass loading in the whole coastal region was 131 tons per year, and the discharge flux of the Yangtze River accounted for more than half (73.5 tons). In comparison with global data, PFAAs concentrations in the coast of China was at a moderate level, and the detected hotspots of high levels were strongly influenced by fluorochemical industries. The occurrences of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) in both freshwater and sea have been widely reported. However, pollution control requires further information on riverine discharges with influence of land-based activities and associated risks to estuarine ecosystems. This study investigated the spatial occurrences and the relationship to sociodemographic parameters of 30 PPCPs in 67 rivers along the Bohai coastal region. The results showed that PPCPs were mainly deposited in aquatic phase, and the partitioning coefficient between water and sediment was highly determined by chemical properties. The levels of 30 PPCPs in rivers ranged from 8.33 to 894.48 ng/L, showing a large variance among regions. Caffeine, sulfamethoxazole, sulfamethazine, ofloxacin, anhydro-erythromycin, and trimethoprim were found to be the major pollutants. Multivariable analysis method was used to assess the correlation of PPCPs markers to socio-economic parameters. The results indicated that domestic emissions contributed most to the occurrences of PPCPs in the riverine water. Risk assessment result indicated that sulfamethoxazole, caffeine, tetracycline, and carbamazepine ranked top four with the highest risks to the most sensitive aquatic organisms. The results identified caffeine and carbamazepine with high detection frequency and concentration as the priority chemicals, while sulfamethoxazole and erythromycin should also be concerned due to their potential threats in specific rivers. Coastal ecosystem health is of vital importance to human well-being. Field investigations of major pollutants along the whole coast of China were carried out to explore associations between coastal development activities and pollutant inputs. Measurements of target pollutants such as PFAAs and PAHs uncovered notable levels in small estuary rivers. The Yangtze River was identified to deliver the highest loads of these pollutants to the seas as a divide for the spatial distribution of pollutant compositions. Soil concentrations of the volatile and semi-volatile pollutants showed a cold-trapping effect in pace with increasing latitudinal gradient. The coastal ecosystem is facing high ecological risks from metal pollution, especially copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn), while priority pollutants of high risks vary for different kinds of protected species, and the ecological risks were influenced by both climate and physicochemical properties of environmental matrices, which should be emphasized to protect and restore coastal ecosystem functioning. Rapid motorization has made vehicles become one of the major sources of air pollution and poses substantial risk to human health. Accurate estimation of spatiotemporal variation and driving factors of vehicle emissions will be valuable for pollution control and public health protection. Here, taking polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) as an example, a dynamic vehicle emission model (DVEM) was developed to assess vehicle emissions. The inventories of vehicle emissions from 2002 to 2017 were estimated under different emission standards and vehicle kilometers traveled for all types of vehicles in China. Vehicle PAHs emissions peaked 1586.85 tonne (t) in 2012 and declined by 36% in the follow-up five years because the vehicle growth has been offset by the upgraded emissions standards. There were remarkable variations among different provinces in China. The vehicle emissions are higher in eastern coastal provinces like Guangdong, Shandong, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang, while lower in the western provinces except Xinjiang. Motorcycles (44.1%) and light duty vehicles (17.8%) were the main contributors to PAHs emissions. The higher urbanization within a region, the larger its vehicle emission density. Urban road density may be linked with the number of on-road vehicles, which is the real driving factor of emissions. Therefore, integrated management should be taken by government to reduce the impacts of vehicle PAHs emissions. Red mud and iron tailings are representative solid wastes in China, which have caused serious environmental pollution and potential harmful risk to people. Based on the alkali characteristic of Bayer red mud and natural fine-grained feature of iron tailings, these two solid wastes were used as raw materials to prepare alkali-activated cementitious mortar (AACM). The microstructure of C-A-S-H gel, pore structure characteristics, environmental impact and economic potential of this AACM were investigated. The results show that C-A-S-H gel was mainly composed of SiQ3 structure in the 28-day cured AACM. The relative content of SiQ4 structure increased while that of SiQ2 structure decreased as the hydration time advanced from 7 to 28 days, resulting in the increase of relative bridge oxygen value by 11.02%. The pores in the AACM sample accounted for 6.73% of the total volume, and these pores were not connected. The pore distribution was relatively uniform, which supported the good development of mechanical strength for AACM. This research elucidates the formation mechanism of C-A-S-H gels in the Bayer red mud–iron tailings-based AACM. The quality of irrigation water and drainage water is essential for local ecosystem and human health in agricultural regions. In this study, the transport analysis, source identification, and environmental risk assessment of perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) were conducted in the largest irrigation area in northern China. The concentrations of the total PFAAs (ΣPFAA) ranged from 41.5 to 263 ng/L in surface water, and the short-chain perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), were dominant with a total contribution of 94%. Generally, the ΣPFAA levels increased from irrigation waters to drainage and receiving lake waters. PFOA showed the highest increase, with potential emission sources located in the catchment of the sub main drainage ditch D5. More PFOA (36.8 kg/y) was outflowed from Ulansuhai Lake to the Yellow River than that inflowed from the Yellow River to the irrigation district (6.15 kg/y). The results of a risk assessment indicated that avian wildlife living in Ulansuhai Lake were threatened by the PFOA and perfluorobutane sulfonate (PFBS) pollution. The estimated daily intakes (EDIs) of the sum of the PFOA, perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA), perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS), and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) through aquatic food consumption for people with the different aquatic food preferences accounted for 6–42% (urban) and 4–27% (rural) of the strictest tolerant daily intake (TDI) value. For this study, 34 water samples were collected along the Wei River and its tributaries. Multivariate statistical analyses were employed to interpret the environmental data and to identify the natural and anthropogenic trace metal inputs to the surface waters of the river. Our results revealed that Zn, Se, B, Ba, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni and V were all detected in the Wei River. Compared to drinking water guidelines, the primary trace metal pollution components (8, Ni, Zn and Mn) exceeded drinking water standard levels by 47.1, 50.0, 44.1 and 26.5%, respectively. Inter-element relationships and landscape features of trace metals conducted by hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) identified a uniform source of trace metals for all sampling sites, excluding one site that exhibited anomalous concentrations. Based on the patterns of relative loadings of individual metals calculated by principal component analysis (PCA), the primary trace metal sources were associated with natural/geogenic contributions, agro-chemical processes and discharge from local industrial sources.
