Background: Accumulating evidence suggests that exposure to air pollution acts as a potential trigger for neurological diseases (NDs), yet the current knowledge regarding the impact of ambient nitrogen dioxide (NO2) on the patients with NDs remains limited. In this study, we conducted a time-series study to evaluate the association between short-term exposure to NO2 and hospital visits for NDs in Xinxiang, China. Methods: An over-dispersed Poisson generalized additive model was used to analyze the association between ambient NO2 concentrations and daily outpatient visits for NDs from January 1, 2015 to December 31, 2017. The model adjusted for meteorological factors, temporal trends, day of the week, and public holidays. The concentrations of air pollutants were collected from four air quality stations in Xinxiang. Results: A total of 38, 865 outpatient visits for NDs were retrieved during the study period. 86.5% of the patients were below the age of 65 years. It was revealed that a 10 µg/m3 increase in NO2 at lag 0 was associated with a significant rise of 1.50% (95% CI: 0.45–2.56%) in outpatient visits for NDs, which was stronger during the cold season. However, the overall results from stratified analyses did not reach statistical significance. Conclusions: Short-term exposure to NO2 is associated with increased outpatient visits for NDs. Purpose: The objective was to compare the immediate effects of pharmacological versus physiotherapy intervention versus a combination of physiotherapy and pharmacological treatment, as well as the quality of life and the recurrence of symptoms in children with functional constipation after 3 months. Methods: A total of 69 children with functional constipation between the ages of 5 and 14 years of either gender were assessed and randomly assigned to one of three groups: Group A, B, and C. Visual Analogue Scale, Bristol Stool Form Scale, frequency of defecation, PedsQL GI symptom scale, and PedsQL Generic Core Scale were used as outcome measures. Pharmacology was used to treat Group A, physiotherapy was used to treat Group B, and a combination of both was used to treat Group C. Results: The study revealed statistically significant results on Visual Analogue Scale, Bristol Stool Form Scale, and frequency of defecation in all groups. However, no significant changes were observed on the PedsQL GI symptom scale and the Generic Core scale in Group A, whereas significant changes were observed in Groups B and C. Conclusion: In this study, we found that there were significant differences in the short- and long-term effects across all groups. More changes occurred in Group C than in Groups A and B. Myokines, released from the muscle, enable communication between the working muscles and other tissues. Their release during physical exercise is assumed to depend on immune–hormonal–metabolic interactions concerning mode (endurance or resistance exercise), duration, and intensity. This meta‐analysis aims to examine the acute changes of circulating myokines inducing immunoregulatory effects caused by a bout of resistance exercise and to consider potential moderators of the results. Based on this selection strategy, a systematic literature search was conducted for resistance exercise intervention studies measuring interleukin (IL‐) 6, IL‐10, IL‐1ra, tumor necrosis factor (TNF‐) α, IL‐15, IL‐7, transforming growth factor (TGF‐) β1, and fractalkines (FKN) before and immediately after resistance exercise in healthy individuals. Random‐effects meta‐analysis was performed for each myokine. We identified a moderate positive effect of resistance exercise for IL‐6 and IL‐1ra. Regarding IL‐15 and TNF‐α, small to moderate effects were found. For IL‐10, no significant effect was observed. Due to no data, meta‐analyses for IL‐7, TGF‐β1, and FKN could not be performed. No moderators (training status, type of exercise, risk of bias, age, sex, time of day, exercise volume, exercise intensity, exercise dose) of the results were detected for all tested myokines. Taken together, this systematic review and meta‐analysis showed immediate positive effects of an acute resistance exercise session on IL‐6, IL‐1ra, TNF‐α, and IL‐15 levels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: This study aimed to investigate if the acute effects of a physical activity (PA) break on the on-task and off-task classroom behavior of primary school children are mediated by inhibition. Combining arousal theory and the cognitive stimulation hypothesis, we employed a 15-min intermittent PA protocol aiming at high-intensity with cognitive demands. We were interested in the effects of PA in real-life settings and in a feasible and sustainable manner for teachers. Thus, the PA session was short and all data collection carried out in ecologically valid school and classroom environments. Methods: Fifteen 4th grade classes were randomly assigned to the experimental group (EG; eight classes, n = 120) or waitlist control group (WCG; seven classes, n = 91). Participants were observed during normal classroom lessons for 25 min before and after the PA break (EG) or a business-as-usual lesson (WCG) and completed the Hearts and Flowers task, a task measuring primarily inhibition, once per observation block. We analyzed the effect of PA on inhibition with ANOVA and the effect on behavior and mediation effect with logistic multilevel models. Results: The PA break positively affected inhibition with a small effect. Active off-task classroom behavior was higher at post-test in the WCG, but not the EG. Of practical importance, intercept-slope interactions indicated that those with higher levels of off-task behavior at pre-test experienced greater benefits of the PA breaks. No significant mediation of the effect of PA on task-related behaviors via inhibition was found. Discussion: In conclusion, a time-efficient PA break can improve inhibition and off-task classroom behavior in primary school children. Aiming at accelerating the implementation of cumulative risk assessment to pesticide residues, this report describes a two‐step prioritisation analysis, on individual pesticides and on target organ systems, that allows to identify (i) low‐priority substances expected to have a marginal contribution to cumulative risk, and (ii) high priority organ systems to be addressed in future cumulative risk assessments. The analysis encompassed 350 substances and 36 raw primary commodities of plant origin surveyed in the monitoring cycle 2019–2021, carried out in 30 population groups, covering 3 age classes, and 17 EU countries. Probabilistic exposure calculations, for chronic and acute effects, were executed on the occurrence and consumption data by a two‐dimensional procedure, modelling variability and uncertainty. In the first step, the prioritisation method adopted allowed to reduce the number of substances by about 80%. These substances were in turn grouped based on their capacity to cause toxicological effects on common organ systems and, as second step, probabilistic combined exposure calculations were carried out for 16 target organ systems. This step allowed to identify the organ systems that need further assessment, reducing their initial number by about 70%. The organ systems would need to be prioritised as follows: reproductive and developmental toxicity, liver, kidney, male reproductive system, and haematopoietic system and haematology. The sources of uncertainty stemming from the modelling procedure and from methodological assumptions were discussed and their impact qualitatively assessed. Background: Capsular bag distension syndrome (CBDS) can be effectively treated using either Neodymium-doped Yttrium Aluminum Garnet (Nd:YAG) laser capsulotomy or surgery. Assessing anterior segment, particularly immediately after Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy, could provide clinically relevant information on ocular dynamics, refractive changes, and complication mechanisms, especially in late postoperative CBDS.Objective: To explore the acute effects of Nd:YAG laser posterior capsulotomy on anterior segment parameters in late postoperative CBDS.Methods and results: In this study, 20 patients underwent Nd:YAG laser posterior capsulotomy after cycloplegia, during which milky-white fluid material migrated into the anterior vitreous. Anterior segment parameters were assessed before and immediately after laser using Scheimpflug-Placido topographer. The main outcome measures were differences in best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), aqueous depth (AqD), anterior chamber volume (ACV), iridocorneal angle (ICA), corneal volume (CV), and central corneal thickness (CCT) at the baseline versus at immediately after laser. The mean age and duration since surgery for CBDS presentation were 70.25 ± 6.21 and 6.15 ± 1.31 years, respectively. The AqD, ACV, ICA, and spherical equivalent increased significantly compared with baseline (4.18 vs. 4.02 mm, p = 0.001; 177 vs. 173.55 mm³, p = 0.004; 51.15° vs. 50.15°, p = 0.023; −1.00 vs. −2.00 D, p = 0.003, respectively). These changes were also associated with significantly improved BCVA an hour after capsulotomy [0.2 (0.05–0.2)] relative to baseline [0.3 (0.2–0.5)], (p = 0.001). CCT and CV decreased nonsignificantly; horizontal AC diameter and K1 and K2 increased nonsignificantly (p > 0.05).Conclusions: Nd:YAG laser posterior capsulotomy appears to be an effective CBDS treatment for acutely improving vision, potentially due to immediate refractive changes caused by altered anterior segment parameters. Context : Blood flow restriction research has focused on muscular strength and hypertrophy . Limited data have been reported about the blood flow restriction effect on the tendon. Objective: To analyze and compare the time course of recovery in Achilles tendon thickness after a single bout of low-intensity resistance training (LI-RT) and low-intensity blood Bow restriction training (LI-BFRT). Methods. A total of 56 healthy participants ( 24 . 60 [4 . 01 y ; 23 . 65 [3 . 4 ] body mass index ) were included . The dominant leg was assigned for LI-BFRT using low load (30% 1-repetition maximum) and 30% of the total occlusion pressure (52.21 [17.89]min Hg) in plantar - flexion exercise ( l x30 + 3x 15 repetitions ). The nondominant leg was assumed as a control condition . Main Outcome Measure: Sonography images were taken before the intervention . immediately posttraining, and 24 hours after exercise (post- 24) for the Achilles tendon thickness . Results: Changes in Achilles tendon thickness for LI - BFRT group were significant post- (-14.5%; p<.05) and post-24 (-9.2%; P < .05). In contrast, LI-RT group showed a transient decrease after exercise (-9.67%; P < .05) followed by a recovery of thickness post-24 (-1.06%; P<.05) Thickness post-24 was different between LI-BFRT versus LI-RT (P <.01). Hedge effect size analysis showed a large effect (g = 0.90) in LI-BFRT pre-post condition and a medium effect (g = 0.57) in post- to post-24. The LI-RT obtained a medium effect (g = 0.53) in pre-post condition and a small effect (g = 0.49) in post- to post-24. Conclusions : This study showed a different time course of the acute response in Achilles tendon thickness between LI-BFRT and LI-RT. Background: This study compared the acute effects of aerobic (AE) and resistance (RE) exercise on reaction time (RT) and working memory (WM) in individuals with intellectual disability. Methods: RT tests and Corsi test for WM were performed before and after three intervention sessions: AE, RE, or control session consisting on watching video. Results: The RT values decreased significantly (p <.001) after both of AE and RE with higher extend after the RE but did not vary following the control session. Corsi scores increased significantly (p <.001) after AE but not after RE or control session. Conclusions: These findings suggest that the effects of acute exercise on cognitive function in individuals with intellectual disability depend on the exercise mode as well as the nature of the cognitive task. Background: Water-polo is the water sport with the highest incidence of injuries, with shoulder pain being the most common one. The understanding of risk factors and guidance on preventive measures is essential in this sport discipline. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of a specific 6-week training plan on range of motion (ROM) and joint strength levels in a group of professional water-polo players. Methods: Quasi-experimental study with a sample of 28 participants (age: 20.1 ± 2.5 years; height: 176.9 ± 6.2 cm; body mass: 74.6 ± 8.1 kg). Three study groups, which consisted of one control group and two experimental groups, were established. Two repeated measurements, pre and post intervention, were performed. During these measurements, ROM of the glenohumeral joint was analyzed both in external (ER) and internal (IR) rotation, as well as the maximal isometric strength. Conclusions: The application of a training program improved glenohumeral joint ROM. ER and IR evolve differently in both shoulders. ER improved only in the throwing arm only in the group undergoing intervention but for the non-dominant side, improvements were observed in both ER and IR, regardless of whether or not they had followed the intervention plan. Neotropical fish Cnesterodon decemmaculatus were exposed to different sublethal concentrations (0.5, 1.0 and 5.0 mg As/L) of sodium arsenite (As III) to determine the median lethal concentration (LC50; 96 h) and to evaluate the response of a set of biomarkers (genotoxic, behavioral, biochemical, and metabolic). At the end of the exposure (96 h), fish were video‐recorded for behavior assessment. We used the micronucleus and nuclear abnormality tests and the comet assay in peripheral blood as genotoxicity biomarkers. In regard to biochemical and metabolic biomarkers, we dissected the brain for acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity; the liver for glutathione‐S‐transferase (GST) and catalase (CAT) activity and glutathione content (GSH); the gills for GSH content; and muscle for AChE, energy metabolism of lipids, carbohydrates, and proteins, and the electron transport system activity of the mitochondrial chain. We calculated an index using metabolic biomarkers, to determine the cellular energy allocation. The LC50 value was 7.32 mg As/L. The As affected some swimming parameters in females. No significant differences in micronucleus were found compared with the control, whereas nuclear aberrations increased significantly at 1.0 and 5.0 mg As/L. The genomic damage index and the percentage of cells with DNA damage (measured by the comet assay) showed a significant increase in the As‐treated groups, and this technique was the most sensitive for detecting genotoxic damage. The As affected the antioxidant system (mainly GSH, CAT, and GST) and reduced the lipid content. A preliminary baseline was generated for the response of C. decemmaculatus exposed to sublethal concentrations of As, when it alters swimming behavior and the antioxidant system, has genotoxic effects, and reduces lipid content. Objective: To examine associations between pre-existing migraines and postconcussion symptoms and cognitive performance acutely (within 72 hours) after a suspected concussion. Design: Nested case-control study. Setting: High schools in Maine, USA. Participants: From a sample of 39161 adolescent athletes who underwent baseline preseason testing, 633 were assessed within 3 days of a suspected concussion. Of these, 59 reported a history of treatment for migraines at baseline (9.3%). These athletes were individually matched to 2 athletes who had a suspected concussion but denied preinjury migraines (total N = 177; age: M = 15.8, SD = 1.3). Assessment of Risk Factors: Self-reported history of treatment for migraines by a physician. Main Outcome Measures: Post-Concussion Symptom Scale total score, ImPACT composite scores, and individual symptom endorsement. Results: Individuals with a pre-existing migraine disorder endorsed greater symptom severity (M = 8.4, SD = 9.9) compared with controls (M = 4.5, SD = 6.5; Cohen's d = 0.47) at preinjury baseline and acutely after suspected injury (migraine: M = 26.0, SD = 25.5; controls: M = 16.7, SD = 15.4; d 5 0.44). Acutely after a suspected concussion, greater proportions of athletes with migraine disorders reported mental fogginess (49.2% vs 33.9%) and memory problems (39.0% vs 24.6%; P < 0.05). Baseline ImPACT composite scores were similar between migraine and control groups (d = 0.04-0.13). Adolescents with pre-existing migraine disorders performed worse after a suspected concussion compared with the control participants on verbal memory (F = 4.32, P = 0.041) and visual memory (F = 3.95, P = 0.049). Conclusions: Individuals with pre-existing migraine disorders may be at higher risk for worse outcomes, including greater overall burden of symptoms and worse cognitive functioning in the memory domain, in the first 72 hours after concussion. Background: Acute cannabis administration can produce transient psychotic-like effects in healthy individuals. However, the mechanisms through which this occurs and which factors predict vulnerability remain unclear. We investigate whether cannabis inhalation leads to psychotic-like symptoms and speech illusion; and whether cannabidiol (CBD) blunts such effects (study 1) and adolescence heightens such effects (study 2). Methods: Two double-blind placebo-controlled studies, assessing speech illusion in a white noise task, and psychotic-like symptoms on the Psychotomimetic States Inventory (PSI). Study 1 compared effects of Cann-CBD (cannabis containing Δ-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and negligible levels of CBD) with Cann+CBD (cannabis containing THC and CBD) in 17 adults. Study 2 compared effects of Cann-CBD in 20 adolescents and 20 adults. All participants were healthy individuals who currently used cannabis. Results: In study 1, relative to placebo, both Cann-CBD and Cann+CBD increased PSI scores but not speech illusion. No differences between Cann-CBD and Cann+CBD emerged. In study 2, relative to placebo, Cann-CBD increased PSI scores and incidence of speech illusion, with the odds of experiencing speech illusion 3.1 (95% CIs 1.3–7.2) times higher after Cann-CBD. No age group differences were found for speech illusion, but adults showed heightened effects on the PSI. Conclusions: Inhalation of cannabis reliably increases psychotic-like symptoms in healthy cannabis users and may increase the incidence of speech illusion. Purpose: The acute effects of static stretching have been frequently studied, but the chronic effects have not been studied concurrently. Thus, this study aimed to investigate both the acute and chronic effects of static stretching at different intensities on flexibility.Methods: Twenty-three healthy men were randomly assigned to perform 1 min of static stretching 3 days/week for 4 weeks at 100% intensity (n = 12) or 120% intensity (n = 11). The acute effects of stretching were assessed by measuring the range of motion (ROM), peak passive torque, and passive stiffness before and after every stretching session; the chronic effects of stretching were assessed by measuring these outcomes at baseline and after 2 and 4 weeks of stretching.Results: Compared with the 100% intensity group, the 120% intensity group had significantly greater acute increases in ROM after all 12 sessions, a significantly greater decrease in passive stiffness after 11 of 12 sessions, and a significantly greater increase in peak passive torque after six of 12 sessions. Regarding the chronic effects, ROM was significantly increased in both groups after 2 and 4 weeks of stretching. Peak passive torque significantly increased in the 100% intensity group after 2 and 4 weeks of stretching, and after 4 weeks in the 120% intensity group.Conclusion: Stretching at 120% intensity resulted in significantly greater acute improvements in ROM, peak passive torque, and stiffness than stretching at 100% intensity. Retrospective dietary exposure assessments were conducted for pesticides that have chronic effects on the thyroid and pesticides that have acute effects on the nervous system. Exposure assessments were performed using monitoring data collected by Member States under their official pesticide monitoring programmes in 2016, 2017 and 2018. Exposure estimates were obtained for 10 populations of consumers (i.e. from different countries and from different age groups) by means of a two‐dimensional probabilistic model. Results were compared to those previously obtained for the years 2014, 2015 and 2016, and exposure did not change significantly over time. However, an increase of the sampling uncertainty was identified for one pesticide in a specific food commodity. Strategies are therefore recommended to reduce the sampling uncertainty and to anticipate potential problems before initiating a cumulative risk assessment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The influence of aerobic training on cardiovascular disorders has already been demonstrated. However, the effect of resistance training is less well known. Arterial stiffness is an increasingly important measure in cardiovascular health. Therefore, this review attempted to study the results of resistance training-based interventions on arterial stiffness in healthy people, for both acute and chronic interventions. A literature search was conducted for randomized controlled trials on the acute and chronic effects of strength training. Studies published in PubMed and SportDiscus databases between 1999 and April 2019 were analyzed. In chronic strength training effects, the majority of groups showed large (d = -1.49 to -1.20) and moderate (d = -1.07) decreases, and small and trivial changes in arterial stiffness. In acute effects interventions, a very large decrease (d = -3.92) was observed, while large (d = 1.24-1.48) and very large (d = 3.88) increases were also found. A resistance training-based intervention of more than four weeks' duration with a frequency of two days per week seems not to compromise cardiovascular health, due to decreases in arterial stiffness. Objective: This study was to investigate the acute effects of hand-arm vibrations on the nerve functions of the hands, and the impact of the grip force applied to the vibrating tool during exposure. Methods: Grip strength and perception of vibration, touch, and temperature were evaluated using quantitative sensory testing (QST) before and after vibration exposure in 21 occupationally unexposed individuals. The procedure was performed twice, with a higher grip force being applied during exposure on the second occasion. Results: Vibration perception was significantly impaired after both exposures. Grip strength, perception of touch, and temperature were only significantly affected after the high grip force exposure. Most pyrethroid insecticides (PYRs) share a similar primary target site in mammals. However, the potency estimates of the lethal and sublethal effects of these compounds differ up to 103-fold. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between the dose administered, the target tissue dose, and the effect of 2 highly toxic PYRs, tefluthrin (TEF; 0.1–9 mg/kg) and bifenthrin (BIF; 0.5–12 mg/kg), by using the oral route, a corn oil vehicle (1 ml/kg) and subcutaneous temperature (T sc) monitoring assays in adult rats. The T sc was determined at 30-min intervals for 5 h (TEF) or 4.5 h (BIF) after dosing. Rats were sacrificed at 6 h after dosing, and BIF and TEF concentrations were determined in blood (Bd), liver (Lv), and cerebellum (Cb) by using a GC-ECD system. The minimal effective dose of BIF (3 mg/kg) affecting T sc was similar to that found in prior studies using other testing paradigms. Regarding TEF, a very steep relationship between the dose administered and toxicity was observed, with a near-threshold to low-effective range for T sc at 0.1–6 mg/kg, and a near lethal syndrome at ≥ 7.5 mg/kg. At 6–7.5 mg/kg TEF, the Cb/Bd and Cb/Lv concentration ratios were both > 1. Conversely, for BIF, the Cb concentration was barely over the Bd concentration and the Cb/Lv concentration ratio remained < 1. Our results and previous findings call for more comprehensive consideration to establish the relevance of the distribution into target tissues and the tissue dosimetry for health risks through the exposure to PYRs in humans. Retrospective dietary exposure assessments were conducted for two groups of pesticides that have acute effects on the nervous system: brain and/or erythrocyte acetylcholinesterase inhibition, and functional alterations of the motor division. The pesticides considered in this assessment were identified and characterised in the scientific report on the establishment of cumulative assessment groups of pesticides for their effects on the nervous system. The exposure assessments used monitoring data collected by Member States under their official pesticide monitoring programmes in 2014, 2015 and 2016 and individual food consumption data from 10 populations of consumers from different countries and from different age groups. Exposure estimates were obtained for each group of pesticides by means of a 2-dimensional Monte Carlo simulation, which was implemented in SAS® software. Results were validated against exposure estimates obtained by the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) using the Monte Carlo Risk Assessment (MCRA) software. Both tools produced nearly identical results and minor differences were mainly attributed to the random effect of probabilistic modelling. The exposure estimates obtained in this report are used in the final scientific report on the cumulative dietary risk characterisation of pesticides that have acute effects on the nervous system. Radiologic accidents or terrorist acts involving radioactive material, as well as radiation exposure in medical or industrial procedures are potential sources of risk for human health. All these risks share a common element, exposure to ionizing radiation. The extent of ionizing radiation injury will depend on a number of independent variables such as dose, type of radiation and tissue, etc. As a result of ionizing radiation exposure, biological effects can take place in acute or long-term manner. As in the case of other self-renewing tissues (e.g. hematopoietic system and intestinal epithelium), skin is also extremely sensitive to ionizing radiation. In this way, appropriate management of radiation skin effects might improve the therapeutic benefit of medical radiation therapy, as well as reduce the mortality associated with any radiological incident (e.g. accident or terrorist attack). For this reason, current and potential future treatment approaches for skin radiation injury are reviewed in this work. Unfortunately, there is no sufficient evidence for establishing a standard treatment to prevent or mitigate radiation-induced cutaneous injury. • Effectiveness of acute exercise on memory. • Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test to analyse memory is employed. • EGs show significant improvements in all memory variables. • Increasing the amount of time devoted to physical education can promote acute cognitive benefits. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of an aerobic game vs. team game class on memory in children. A total of 236 children aged 8–12 years participated in this study. The students were randomly assigned to two experimental groups (EGs): team game group (EG1), n = 79; aerobic exercise group (EG2), n = 79; and control group (CG) n = 78 (CG did not perform any kind of physical education). The Rey Auditory Verbal Learning test was employed to analyse memory. In the pre-test condition, there were no significant differences in any memory variables. In post-test conditions (20 min after of the physical exercise), the EGs displayed higher scores than the CG in deferred memory and recognition, moreover, the EG1 displayed higher scores than the CG in Trial 5 (p =.002), trials summation (p =.003), and learning curve (p =.043). There were no significant differences between EGs in both pretest and posttest conditions. For the group x time interaction (within-group), the EGs showed significant improvements in all memory variables except in the learning curve. Background: The acute effects of aerobic exercise on improved mood and anxiety reduction have been demonstrated across clinical and nonclinical populations. Limited work has evaluated the acute effects of aerobic exercise on negative affect, obsessions, and compulsions in patients with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD).Method: Fifty-five patients (64% female) with treatment-resistant OCD were randomized to either 12 weeks of aerobic exercise (AE) or health education contact (HEC) control. Participants rated negative affect (i.e., mood and anxiety), obsessions and compulsions before and after each weekly AE or HEC session. Multilevel models were constructed to evaluate the effect of intervention condition, treatment week (time), and their interaction in terms of acute change in affect, obsession, and compulsions.Results: Results reflected a main effect of condition, such that AE resulted in significantly larger increases in positive mood, and reductions in anxiety and compulsions, as compared to HEC. There was also a main effect of time in predicting acute anxiety reduction, such that linear reductions in anxiety over the course of treatment were observed. No significant effects were observed for acute changes in obsessions.Limitations: The sample was small and was limited in demographic heterogeneity. Bouts of aerobic exercise were not standardized in terms of duration and mode, which could impact affective response to exercise, and acute affective OCD effects were exclusively self-reported.Discussion: The current findings may help elucidate potential mechanisms of action of exercise on OCD outcomes. In addition, these results point toward the potential of designing exercise interventions that can teach patients to utilize individual bouts of physical activity, "in-the-moment" to improve mood and reduce anxiety and compulsions. Abstract Accumulating evidence suggests that short- and long-term exposure to ambient fine particulate matter ≤ 2.5 μm (PM 2.5) during pregnancy is associated with preterm births, yet the results are inconsistent, and the shape of the exposure-response curve is unclear, partially due to the limited studies conducted in areas with high air pollution. Our study evaluated the association between ambient PM 2.5 concentration and preterm births in Beijing, China. Daily preterm birth data were collected from a hospital in Beijing during 2006 to 2013; a time-series of daily PM 2.5 concentrations during the same period is assembled with measured data at three monitoring sites in Beijing. An extension of the Poisson regression and a time-series model were applied to simultaneously estimate the acute and chronic effects of exposure to PM 2.5 , with mutual adjustment for short- and long-term exposure as well as for confounders. During the study period, the PM 2.5 concentration was 70.4 ± 60.6 μg/m3 and was found to be associated with an increased risk of preterm birth. In the study cohort, a 0.52% (95% confidence interval, CI: 0.09%, 0.96%) and 3.13% (95%CI: 1.92%, 4.35%) increase in preterm births was estimated for each 10-μg/m3 increase in short- and long-term exposure, respectively. This association was significantly modified by season (p < 0.05). With mutual adjustments for short- and long-term exposure, a more robust association (3.16%, 95% CI: 1.95%, 4.39%; per 10-μg/m3 increment in PM 2.5) was observed for chronic effects. The exposure–response relationships for both short- and long-term exposure were linear, without a threshold, over the relatively low exposure range and flattened out at higher concentration levels. The maximum effect for long-term exposure to PM 2.5 (33.6%) was much greater than that for short-term exposure (19.9%). These findings indicate that air quality improvements over a long period could yield significant health benefits. Postoperative pulmonary complications are common and cause increased mortality and hospital stay. Smoking and respiratory diseases including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and obstructive sleep apnoea are associated with developing postoperative pulmonary complications. Independent risk factors for such complications also include low pre-operative oxygen saturation, or a recent respiratory infection. Postponing surgery in patients who have respiratory infections or inadequately treated respiratory disease, until these can be fully treated, should, therefore, reduce postoperative pulmonary complications. There is evidence from several studies that pre-operative smoking cessation reduces such complications, with no agreed duration at which the benefits become significant; the longer the abstinence, the greater the benefit. Intensive smoking cessation programmes are more effective, and there are long-term benefits, as many patients become permanent non-smokers following their surgery. Supervised exercise programmes normally last 6-8 weeks, and although they reduce overall complications, the evidence of benefit for postoperative pulmonary complications is mixed. High-intensity interval training can improve fitness in just 2 weeks, and so may be more useful for surgical patients. Specific respiratory pre-operative interventions, such as deep breathing exercises and incentive spirometry, can help when used as components of a package of respiratory care. Pre-operative inspiratory muscle training programmes that involve inspiration against a predetermined respiratory load may also reduce some postoperative pulmonary complications. Pre-operative exercise programmes are recommended for patients having major surgery, or in those where pre-operative testing has shown low levels of cardiorespiratory fitness; interval training or respiratory interventions are more feasible as these reduce complications after a shorter preoperative intervention. Highlights • Exposure to metals is often associated to cholinesterasic (ChE) inhibition. • ChE inhibition is a common criteria to assess effects of varied contaminants, e.g. metals. • Uranium exposure did not result in ChE inhibition in any tested species. • ChE inhibition seems not to be suitable to diagnose uranium exposure. Abstract To address the issue of potential cholinergic neurotoxic effects in exposed biota, including sentinel or indicator species, a biomarker approach using cholinesterase (ChE) inhibition as effect criterion has been proposed. Waterborne metals and complex metallic effluents (e.g. from mining) also seem to affect ChE activity of numerous aquatic species, although there is debate on the likelihood of this effect. Considering that environmental exposure to mine effluents is a complex phenomenon, complicated by other factors (such as pH), we intended to simulate a uranium rich effluent, to which test organisms were acutely exposed. The objective of the present study was to quantify the effects of waterborne uranium on ChE activity of the freshwater organisms Daphnia magna (crustacean), Corbicula fluminea (mollusc), and Carassius auratus (fish), in order to evaluate the feasibility of using this biomarker to diagnose chemical stress induced by waterborne uranium, resulting from mining activities. The obtained data showed that, despite the large body of evidence pointing to inhibitory effects on cholinesterases caused by metals, uranium was not causative of significant ChE impairment in vivo for any tested organism, at concentrations that represent a worst-case contamination scenario. Considering the obtained results, cholinesterase inhibition is not suited to be integrated into a battery of biomarkers to diagnose uranium exposure. Although our study is strictly laboratorial, it has implications in the use and interpretation of this environmental biomarker in biomonitoring studies, especially of uranium-impacted areas. Summary: Nerve agents are organophosphate (OP) compounds and among the most powerful poisons known to man. A terrorist attack on civilian or military populations causing mass casualties is a real threat. The OP nerve agents include soman, sarin, cyclosarin, tabun, and VX. The major mechanism of acute toxicity is the irreversible inhibition of acetylcholinesterase. Acetylcholinesterase inhibition results in the accumulation of excessive acetylcholine levels in synapses, leading to progression of toxic signs including hypersecretions, tremors, status epilepticus, respiratory distress, and death. Miosis and rhinorrhea are the most common clinical findings in those individuals acutely exposed to OP nerve agents. Prolonged seizures are responsible for the neuropathology. The brain region that shows the most severe damage is the amygdala, followed by the piriform cortex, hippocampus, cortex, thalamus, and caudate/putamen. Current medical countermeasures are only modestly effective in attenuating the seizures and neuropathology. Anticonvulsants such as benzodiazepines decrease seizure activity and improve outcome, but their efficacy depends upon the administration time after exposure to the nerve agent. Administration of benzodiazepines may increase the risk for seizure recurrence. HIV sexual risk behavior is broadly associated with substance use. Yet critical questions remain regarding the potential causal link between substance use (e.g., intoxication) and HIV sexual risk behavior. The present systematic review was designed to examine and synthesize the existing literature regarding the effects of substance administration on HIV sexual risk behavior. Randomized controlled experiments investigating substance administration and HIV sexual risk behavior (e.g., likelihood of condom use in a casual sex scenario) were included. Across five databases, 2750 titles/abstracts were examined and forty-three total peer reviewed published manuscripts qualified (few were multi-study manuscripts, and those details are outlined in the text). The majority of articles investigated the causal role of acute alcohol administration on HIV sexual risk behavior, although one article investigated the effects of acute THC administration, one the effects of acute cocaine administration, and two the effects of buspirone. The results of this review suggest a causal role in acute alcohol intoxication increasing HIV sexual risk decision-making. Although evidence is limited with other substances, cocaine administration also appears to increase sexual risk, while acute cannabis and buspirone maintenance may decrease sexual risk. In the case of alcohol intoxication, the pharmacological effects independently contribute to HIV sexual risk decision-making, and these effects are exacerbated by alcohol expectancies, increased arousal, and delay to condom availability. Comparisons across studies showed that cocaine led to greater self-reported sexual arousal than alcohol, potentially suggesting a different risk profile. HIV prevention measures should take these substance administration effects into account. Increasing the amount of freely and easily accessible condoms to the public may attenuate the influence of acute intoxication on HIV sexual risk decision-making. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background The link between PM 2.5 exposure and adverse health outcomes is well documented from studies across the world. However, the reported effect estimates vary across studies, locations and constituents. We aimed to conduct a meta-analysis on associations between short-term exposure to PM 2.5 constituents and mortality using city-specific estimates, and explore factors that may explain some of the observed heterogeneity. Methods We systematically reviewed epidemiological studies on particle constituents and mortality using PubMed and Web of Science databases up to July 2015.We included studies that examined the association between short-term exposure to PM 2.5 constituents and all-cause, cardiovascular, and respiratory mortality, in the general adult population. Each study was summarized based on pre-specified study key parameters (e.g., location, time period, population, diagnostic classification standard), and we evaluated the risk of bias using the Office of Health Assessment and Translation (OHAT) Method for each included study. We extracted city-specific mortality risk estimates for each constituent and cause of mortality. For multi-city studies, we requested the city-specific risk estimates from the authors unless reported in the article. We performed random effects meta-analyses using city-specific estimates, and examined whether the effects vary across regions and city characteristics (PM 2.5 concentration levels, air temperature, elevation, vegetation, size of elderly population, population density, and baseline mortality). Results We found a 0.89% (95% CI: 0.68, 1.10%) increase in all-cause, a 0.80% (95% CI: 0.41, 1.20%) increase in cardiovascular, and a 1.10% (95% CI: 0.59, 1.62%) increase in respiratory mortality per 10 μg/m 3 increase in PM 2.5 . Accounting for the downward bias induced by studies of single days, the all-cause mortality estimate increased to 1.01% (95% CI: 0.81, 1.20%). We found significant associations between mortality and several PM 2.5 constituents. The most consistent and stronger associations were observed for elemental carbon (EC) and potassium (K). For most of the constituents, we observed high variability of effect estimates across cities. Conclusions Our meta-analysis suggests that (a) combustion elements such as EC and K have a stronger association with mortality, (b) single lag studies underestimate effects, and (c) estimates of PM 2.5 and constituents differ across regions. Abstract Mercury (Hg) is a global pollutant that may exert its toxic effects on living organisms and is found in both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems in three chemical forms; elemental, organic, and inorganic. The inorganic form (iHg) tends to predominantly accumulate in aquatic environments. The gill apparatus is a very dynamic organ that plays a fundamental role in gas exchange, osmoregulation, acid-base regulation, detoxification, and excretion, and the gills are the primary route of waterborne iHg entrance in fish. In the present work we investigated the morphofunctional and ultrastructural effects in Danio rerio gills after 96 h exposure to two low HgCl2 concentrations (7.7 and 38.5 µg/L). Our results clearly demonstrated that a short-term exposure to low concentrations of mercury chloride resulted in gill morphology alterations and in the modifications of both Na+/K+-ATPase and metallothioneins (MTs) expression pattern. The main morphological effects recorded in this work were represented by hyperplasia and ectopia of chloride cells (CCs), lamellar fusion, increased mucous secretion, alteration of pavement cells (PVCs), detachment of the secondary epithelium, pillar cell degeneration, degeneration, and apoptosis. Objectives: Relatively few studies have explored the possibility of acute cognitive effects of multivitamin ingestion. This report explores the acute brain electrophysiological changes associated with multivitamin and mineral supplementation, with and without guaraná, using the steady-state visually evoked potential (SSVEP). Methods: Based on the known SSVEP correlates of A-X continuous performance task (CPT) performance, and sensitivity to acute psychopharmacological manipulations, the A-X CPT was adopted as a task paradigm to explore treatment-related neurophysiological changes in attentional processing. Twenty healthy non-smoking adults aged 21–39 years (mean age = 28.35 years, SD = 5.52) took part in this double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized, balanced crossover design study. Results: The study demonstrated both transient and tonic changes in the SSVEP response during completion of the A-X CPT following multivitamin and mineral treatment both with and without guaraná. Transient changes in SSVEP response in prefrontal regions were observed after a single dose of a multivitamin and mineral preparation indicative of enhanced activity within brain regions engaged by the attentional demands of the task. This pattern of change in frontal regions was correlated with improved behavioural performance after treatment with the multivitamin and mineral combination. Where tonic shifts in SSVEP response were investigated, multivitamin and mineral treatment was associated with a pattern of increased inhibition across posterior regions, with enhanced excitatory processing in prefrontal regions. In contrast, multivitamin and mineral treatment with additional guaraná showed a tonic shift towards greater excitatory processes after a single treatment, consistent with the caffeine content of this treatment. Discussion: While preliminary in nature, these findings suggest a single multivitamin/mineral dose is sufficient to impact on functional brain activity in task-related brain regions. Ambient air ozone (O 3 ) is generated photochemically from oxides of nitrogen and volatile hydrocarbons. Inhaled O 3 causes remarkably reversible acute lung function changes and inflammation. Approximately 80% of inhaled O 3 is deposited on the airways. O 3 reacts rapidly with C C double bonds in hydrophobic airway and alveolar surfactant-associated phospholipids and cholesterol. Resultant primary ozonides further react to generate bioactive hydrophilic products that also initiate lipid peroxidation leading to eicosanoids and isoprostanes of varying electrophilicity. Airway surface liquid ascorbate and urate also scavenge O 3 . Thus, inhaled O 3 may not interact directly with epithelial cells. Acute O 3 –induced lung function changes are dominated by involuntary inhibition of inspiration (rather than bronchoconstriction), mediated by stimulation of intraepithelial nociceptive vagal C-fibers via activation of transient receptor potential (TRP) A1 cation channels by electrophile (e.g., 4-oxo-nonenal) adduction of TRPA1 thiolates enhanced by PGE 2 -stimulated sensitization. Acute O 3 -induced neutrophilic airways inflammation develops more slowly than the lung function changes. Surface macrophages and epithelial cells are involved in the activation of epithelial NFkB and generation of proinflammatory mediators such as IL-6, IL-8, TNFa, IL-1b, ICAM-1, E-selectin and PGE 2 . O 3 -induced partial depolymerization of hyaluronic acid and the release of peroxiredoxin-1 activate macrophage TLR4 while oxidative epithelial cell release of EGFR ligands such as TGFa or EGFR transactivation by activated Src may also be involved. The antidiabetic potential of thirteen novel dogfish glucagon derived analogues were assessed in vitro and in acute in vivo studies. Stable peptide analogues enhanced insulin secretion from BRIN-BD11 β-cells (p < 0.001) and reduced acute glycaemic responses following intraperitoneal glucose (25 nmol/kg) in healthy NIH Swiss mice (p < 0.05–p<0.001). The in vitro insulinotropic actions of [S2a]dogfish glucagon, [S2a]dogfish glucagon-exendin-4(31-39) and [S2a]dogfish glucagon-Lys 30 -γ-glutamyl-PAL, were blocked (p < 0.05–p<0.001) by the specific GLP-1 and glucagon receptor antagonists, exendin-4(9-39) and (desHis 1 Pro 4 Glu 9 )glucagon amide but not by (Pro 3 )GIP, indicating lack of GIP receptor involvement. These analogues dose-dependently stimulated cAMP production in GLP-1 and glucagon (p < 0.05–p<0.001) but not GIP-receptor transfected cells. They improved acute glycaemic and insulinotropic responses in high-fat fed diabetic mice and in wild-type C57BL/6J and GIPR-KO mice (p < 0.05–p<0.001), but not GLP-1R-KO mice, confirming action on GLP-1 but not GIP receptors. Recent studies revealed that freshwaters are not only polluted by chemicals, but also by persistent synthetic material like microplastics (plastic particles <1 mm). Microplastics include a diverse range of characteristics, e.g. polymer type, size or shape, but also their tendency to sorb pollutants or release additives. Although there is rising concern about the pollution of freshwaters by microplastics, knowledge about their potential effects on organisms is limited. For a better understanding of their risks, it is crucial to unravel which characteristics influence their effects on organisms. Analysing effects by the mere particles is the first step before including more complex interactions e.g. with associated chemicals. The aim of this study was to analyse potential physical effects of microplastics on one representative organism for limnic zooplankton ( Daphnia magna ). We investigated whether microplastics can be ingested and whether their presence causes adverse effects after short-term exposure. Daphnids were exposed for up to 96 h to 1-μm and 100-μm polyethylene particles at concentrations between 12.5 and 400 mg L −1 . Ingestion of 1-μm particles led to immobilisation increasing with dose and time with an EC 50 of 57.43 mg L −1 after 96 h. 100-μm particles that could not be ingested by the daphnids had no observable effects. These results underline that, considering high concentrations, microplastic particles can already induce adverse effects in limnic zooplankton. Although it needs to be clarified if these concentrations can be found in the environment these results are a basis for future impact analysis, especially in combination with associated chemicals. Purpose In premenopausal women with metastatic hormone receptor-positive breast cancer, hormonal therapy is the first-line therapy. Gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogue + tamoxifen therapies have been found to be more effective. The pattern of recurrence risk over time after primary surgery suggests that peri-operative factors impact recurrence. Secondary analyses of an adjuvant trial suggested that the luteal phase timing of surgical oophorectomy in the menstrual cycle simultaneous with primary breast surgery favourably influenced long-term outcomes. Methods Two hundred forty-nine premenopausal women with incurable or metastatic hormone receptor-positive breast cancer entered a trial in which they were randomised to historical mid-luteal or mid-follicular phase surgical oophorectomy followed by oral tamoxifen treatment. Kaplan–Meier methods, the log-rank test, and multivariable Cox regression models were used to assess overall and progression-free survival (PFS) in the two randomised groups and by hormone-confirmed menstrual cycle phase. Results Overall survival (OS) and PFS were not demonstrated to be different in the two randomised groups. In a secondary analysis, OS appeared worse in luteal phase surgery patients with progesterone levels <2 ng/ml (anovulatory patients; adjusted hazard ratio 1.46, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.89–2.41, p = 0.14) compared with those in luteal phase with progesterone level of 2 ng/ml or higher. Median OS was 2 years (95% CI: 1.7–2.3) and OS at 4 years was 26%. Background Almost half the world's population is exposed to household air pollution from biomass and coal combustion. The acute effects of household air pollution on the cardiovascular system are poorly characterized. We conducted a panel study of rural Indian women to assess whether personal exposures to black carbon during cooking were associated with acute changes in blood pressure. Methods We enrolled 45 women (ages 25–66 years) who cooked with biomass fuels. During cooking sessions in winter and summer, we simultaneously measured their personal real-time exposure to black carbon and conducted ambulatory blood pressure measurements every 10 min. We recorded ambient temperature and participants' activities while cooking. We assessed body mass index, socioeconomic status, and salt intake. Multivariate mixed effects regression models with random intercepts were used to estimate the associations between blood pressure and black carbon exposure, e.g., average exposure in the minutes preceding blood pressure measurement, and average exposure over an entire cooking session. Results Women's geometric mean (GM) exposure to black carbon during cooking sessions was lower in winter (GM: 40 μg/m 3 ; 95% CI: 30, 53) than in summer (GM: 56 μg/m 3 ; 95% CI: 42, 76). Interquartile range increases in black carbon were associated with changes in systolic blood pressure from −0.4 mm Hg (95% CI: −2.3, 1.5) to 1.9 mm Hg (95% CI: −0.8, 4.7), with associations increasing in magnitude as black carbon values were assessed over greater time periods preceding blood pressure measurement. Interquartile range increases in black carbon were associated with small decreases in diastolic blood pressure from −0.9 mm Hg (95% CI: −1.7, −0.1) to −0.4 mm Hg (95% CI: −1.6, 0.8). Associations of a similar magnitude were estimated for cooking session-averaged values. Conclusions We found some evidence of an association between exposure to black carbon and acute increases in systolic blood pressure in Indian women cooking with biomass fuels, which may have implications for the development of cardiovascular diseases. Biosurfactants like rhamnolipids are promising alternatives to chemical surfactants in a range of applications. A wider use requires an analysis of their environmental fate and their ecotoxicological potential. In the present study mono-rhamnolipids produced by a recombinant Pseudomonas putida strain were analyzed using the Green Toxicology concept for acute and mechanism-specific toxicity in an ecotoxicological test battery. Acute toxicity tests with the invertebrate Daphnia magna and with zebrafish embryos ( Danio rerio ) were performed. In addition, microbial and fungicidal effectiveness was investigated. Mutagenicity of the sample was tested by means of the Ames fluctuation assay. A selected mono-rhamnolipid was used for model simulations regarding mutagenicity and estrogenic activity. Our results indicate that mono-rhamnolipids cause acute toxicity to daphnids and zebrafish embryos comparable to or even lower than chemical surfactants. Rhamnolipids showed very low toxicity to the germination of Aspergillus niger spores and the growth of Candida albicans . No frameshift mutation or base substitutions were observed using the Ames fluctuation assay with the two tester strains TA98 and TA100. This result was confirmed by model simulations. Likewise it was computed that rhamnolipids have no estrogenic potential. Influenza-like illness causes substantial morbidity and mortality. Air pollution has already been linked to many health issues, and increasing evidence in recent years supports an association between air pollution and respiratory infections. It is a pioneer study in China to quantify the effects of air pollution on influenza-like illness. This study used wavelet coherence analysis and generalized additive models to explore the potential association between air pollution (including particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter ≦2.5 μm (PM 2.5 ), particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter ≦10 μm (PM 10 ) and nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 )) and influenza-like illness (a total of 59860 cases) in Nanjing, China from January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2013. The average concentrations of PM 2.5 , PM 10 and NO 2 were 77.37 μg/m 3 , 135.20 μg/m 3 and 55.80 μg/m 3 . An interquartile range increase in PM 2.5 concentration was associated with a 2.99% (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.64%, 4.36%) increase in daily influenza-like cases on the same day, while the corresponding increase in NO 2 was associated with a 3.77% (95% CI: 2.01%, 5.56%) increase in daily cases. People aged 0–4 were proved to be significantly susceptible to PM 10 and NO 2 ; 5–14 ages were significantly susceptible to PM 2.5 and PM 10 ; and 15–24 ages were significantly susceptible to all the analyzed air pollutants. Air pollution effects tended to be null or negative for patients aged over 25, which might be due to the small number of influenza-like cases in this age group. Mercury (Hg) is a highly hazardous pollutant widely used in industrial, pharmaceutical and agricultural fields. Mercury is found in the environment in several forms, elemental, inorganic (iHg) and organic, all of which are toxic. Considering that the liver is the organ primarily involved in the regulation of metabolic pathways, homeostasis and detoxification we investigated the morphological and ultrastructural effects in Danio rerio liver after 96 h exposure to two low HgCl2 concentrations (7.7 and 38.5 µg/L). We showed that a short-term exposure to very low concentrations of iHg severely affects liver morphology and ultrastructure. The main effects recorded in this work were: cytoplasm vacuolization, decrease in both lipid droplets and glycogen granules, increase in number of mitochondria, increase of rough endoplasmic reticulum and pyknotic nuclei. Pathological alterations observed were dose dependent. Trough immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization and real-time PCR analysis, the induction of metallothionein (MT) under stressor conditions was also evaluated. Some of observed alterations could be considered as a general response of tissue to heavy metals, whereas others (such as increased number of mitochondria and increase of RER) may be considered as an adaptive response to mercury. Despite described benefits of aerobic high-intensity interval exercise (HIIE), the acute responses during different HIIE modes and associated health risks have only been sparsely discovered in heart disease patients. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the acute responses for physiological parameters, cardiovascular and inflammatory biomarkers, and catecholamines yielded by two different aerobic HIIE protocols compared to continuous exercise (CE) in phase III cardiac rehabilitation. Eight cardiac patients (7 with coronary heart disease, 1 with myocarditis; 7 males, 1 female; age: 63.0 ± 9.4 years; height: 1.74 ± 0.05 m; weight: 83.6 ± 8.7 kg), all but one treated with ß-blocking agents, performed a maximal symptom-limited incremental exercise test (IET) and three different exercise tests matched for mean load (Pmean) and total duration: 1 ) short HIIE with a peak workload duration (tpeak) of 20 s and a peak workload (Ppeak) equal to the maximum power output (Pmax) from IET; 2) long HIIE with a tpeak of 4 min, Ppeak was corresponding to the power output at 85 % of maximal heart rate (HRmax) from IET; 3) CE with a target workload equal to Pmean of both HIIE modes. Acute metabolic and peak cardiorespiratory responses were significantly higher during long HIIE compared to short HIIE and CE (p < 0.05) except HRpeak which tended to be higher in long HIIE than in short HIIE (p = 0.08). Between short HIIE and CE, no significant difference was found for any parameter. Acute responses of cardiovascular and inflammatory biomarkers and catecholamines didn't show any significant difference between tests (p > 0.05). All health-related variables remained in a normal range in any test except NT-proBNP, which was already elevated at baseline. The aim of this study was to compare the acute effect of resistance exercise (RE) with and without blood flow restriction (BFR) on heart rate (HR), double product (DP), oxygen saturation (SpO2) and rating of perceived exertion (RPE). Twenty-four men (21⋅79 ± 3⋅21 years) performed three experimental protocols in a random order (crossover): (i) high-intensity RE at 80% of 1RM (HI), (ii) low-intensity RE at 20% of 1RM (LI) and (iii) low-intensity RE at 20% of 1RM combined with partial blood flow restriction (LI+BFR). HR, blood pressure, SpO2 and RPE were assessed. The data were analysed using repeated measures analysis of variance and the Wilcoxon test for RPE. The results indicated that all protocols significantly increased HR, both immediately postexercise and during the subsequent 60 min (P<0⋅05), and postexercise DP (P<0⋅05), but there were no differences between protocols. The protocols of LI and LI+BFR reduced postexercise SpO2 (P = 0⋅033, P = 0⋅007), and the LI+BFR protocol presented a perception of greater exertion in the lower limbs compared with HI (P = 0⋅022). We conclude that RE performed at low intensity combined with BFR seems to reduce the SpO2 after exercise and increase HR and DP while maintaining a perception of greater exertion on the lower limbs. This study aims to evaluate the acute effects of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) in patients with exacerbated chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD; post-acute phase), as well as the influence on the outcome of hospitalization. A total of 30 patients with exacerbated COPD were selected, oriented and submitted to the use of CPAP for 60 minutes in the semi-fowler position (45o), have been checked the respiratory rate (f), arterial oxygen saturation (SpO2), heart rate (HR) and arterial pressure (AP) connected to CPAP with orofacial mask. Later, they were accompanied for checking the outcome of hospitalization. The patients mean age was 68.7 ± 10.94 years and showed the following classifications: GOLD 10%, moderate 43% and serious 47%. Regarding the outcome of hospitalization, it has been observed that 11 individuals died (36.67%), 16 were admitted to the ICU for an average of 4.0 ± 3.0 days. The indication of CPAP in patients with exacerbated COPD, included in this study, produced positive acute effect by the improvement of SpO2. Chromium (Cr) is an essential element but is toxic to aquatic organisms at elevated concentrations. In the present study, adult Japanese medaka ( Oryzias latipes) were exposed to a sublethal hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) concentration via dissolved and dietary exposures for 6 d. Various measurements of Cr were made: bioaccumulation in different tissues, subcellular distribution in the liver, effects on antioxidants and acetylcholinesterase (AChE), and Cr-induced lipid peroxidation. The results showed that bioaccumulation increased dramatically in all tested tissues from dissolved exposure but only significantly in the intestine from dietary treatment, implying that dissolved exposure may be predominant for Cr accumulation in medaka. Subcellular distribution revealed that Cr accumulated in the liver was mainly (46%) associated with the heat-stable protein fraction. Among the antioxidants examined, catalase (CAT) responded to dissolved Cr exposure in most tissues whereas superoxide dismutase (SOD) was less responsive. Malondialdehyde concentrations were significantly elevated in most tissues examined in the dissolved Cr-exposed fish, but were only elevated in the liver and intestine in the dietary Cr-exposed fish. The AChE activity in the brain was stimulated by 49% in the dissolved Cr-exposed fish. Reductions in condition factor and gonadosomatic index were also observed. Urea is the most commonly used nitrogen fertilizer worldwide. However, depending on soil and environmental conditions, high nitrogen losses can occur due to gaseous ammonia emissions. Urease inhibitors like N -(n -butyl)thiophosphoric triamide (NBPT) reduce these losses by blocking the urease enzyme, which catalyzes urea hydrolysis. With the increasing use of NBPT its environmental fate and features of urease inhibition become increasingly important. This study aimed to further elucidate major NBPT degradation pathways and related urease inhibition in soil. This was investigated in a 14-d incubation experiment using practice-relevant application rates of NBPT and four of its metabolites N -(n -butyl)phosphoric triamide (NBPTO), diamido phosphoric acid (DAP), diamido thiophosphoric acid (DATP) and rac - N -(n -butyl)thiophosphoric diamide (NBPD), covering three postulated degradation pathways. Additionally, the urease inhibition by these compounds was determined and further investigated in 2-h tests. The latter provided dose-response curves, showing that all substances inhibited urease, with NBPTO being the most effective. Inhibition of urease in NBPT-spiked soil was also largely, but not completely, attributed to NBPTO formed within the test period. In 14-d incubation tests, all investigated compounds dissipated quickly by >90% within 6 d (NBPTO), 3 d (NBPT) and ≤1 d (DAP, DATP and NBPD). Extensive oxidation of NBPT to NBPTO and subsequent minor formation of DAP was identified as the preferred degradation pathway. Abiotic degradation processes in sterile soil corresponded to 65–90% of total degradation in microbial active soil. Furthermore, pseudo-first order dissipation kinetics were retarded in sterile soil. Urease activity, calculated as a percentage of activity in the urea-fertilized control, was lowest after about 2 d when NBPTO was spiked to soil (17.9%), followed by NBPT (35.7%), DATP (51.3%), NBPD (54.0%), and DAP (54.4%). This shows that urease inhibition depends on the interplay of NBPT and its degradation products. Occupational exposure to pesticides and resultant health problems were assessed among 318 randomly selected cotton farmers from the two districts of Punjab, Pakistan. Heavy dependence of farmers on pesticides for pest control was reported. A large part (23.3 %) of the pesticides belonged to the category highly hazardous, whereas the largest part (54.7 %) belonged to the category moderately hazardous. Some of them (8 %) were reported to be used on vegetables. Common working practices of high exposure risk were: the confrontation of pesticide spills in the stage of spray solution preparation (76.4 %), the use of low-technology and faulty sprayers (67.9 %), and spraying under inappropriate weather (46.5 %). A large proportion (34 %) of the farmers reported multiple intoxication symptoms by pesticide use; the most common were irritation of skin and eyes, headache, and dizziness. Nevertheless, most farmers thought these symptoms were usual; only few reported visiting the doctor. Findings clearly indicated a high level of risk exposure to pesticides among farmers of the study area, calling upon immediate interventions toward increasing awareness about alternative pest control practices with less pesticide use. The effects of the acidification associated with CO 2 leakage from sub-seabed geological storage was studied by the evaluation of the short-term effects of CO 2 -induced acidification on juveniles of the bivalve Ruditapes philippinarum . Laboratory scale experiments were performed using a CO 2 -bubbling system designed to conduct ecotoxicological assays. The organisms were exposed for 10 days to elutriates of sediments collected in different littoral areas that were subjected to various pH treatments (pH 7.1, 6.6, 6.1). The acute pH-associated effects on the bivalves were observed, and the dissolved metals in the elutriates were measured. The median toxic effect pH was calculated, which ranged from 6.33 to 6.45. The amount of dissolved Zn in the sediment elutriates increased in parallel with the pH reductions and was correlated with the proton concentrations. The pH, the pCO 2 and the dissolved metal concentrations (Zn and Fe) were linked with the mortality of the exposed bivalves. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The threat of radiation exposure requires a mechanistic understanding of radiation-induced immune injury and recovery. The study objective was to evaluate responses to ionizing radiation in ovariectomized (surgically post-menopausal) female cynomolgus macaques. Materials and methods: Animals received a single total-body irradiation (TBI) exposure at doses of 0, 2 or 5 Gy with scheduled necropsies at 5 days, 8 weeks and 24 weeks post-exposure. Blood and lymphoid tissues were evaluated for morphologic, cellular, and molecular responses. Results: Irradiated animals developed symptoms of acute hematopoietic syndrome, and reductions in thymus weight, thymopoiesis, and bone marrow cellularity. Acute, transient increases in plasma monocyte chemoattractant protein 1 (MCP-1) were observed in 5 Gy animals along with dose-dependent alterations in messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) signatures in thymus, spleen, and lymph node. Expression of T cell markers was lower in thymus and spleen, while expression of macrophage marker CD68 (cluster of differentiation 68) was relatively elevated in lymphoid tissues from irradiated animals. Conclusions: Ovariectomized female macaques exposed to moderate doses of radiation experienced increased morbidity, including acute, dose-dependent alterations in systemic and tissue-specific biomarkers, and increased macrophage/T cell ratios. The role of saliva in maintaining oral health and homeostasis is based on its physicochemical properties and biological activities of its components, including salivary immunoglobulin A (IgA). Both salivary rates and immunological status of saliva are found to be compromised in smokers. The aim of this study was to investigate the acute time-dependent effect of smoking and black currant consumption on the salivary flow rate (SFR) and salivary IgA secretion rate (sIgA SR) in healthy smokers. SFR, sIgA levels in saliva, and sIgA SRs were determined in healthy smokers ( n=8) at eight times of assessment within three consecutive interventions: at the baseline; 5, 30, and 60 min after smoking; 5, 30, and 60 min after black currant consumption (100 g), followed by smoking; and 5 min after black currant consumption. Smoking induced a significant delayed effect on SFR measured 60 min after smoking ( P=.03), while black currant consumption preceding smoking prevented that effect. Salivary IgA concentrations and sIgA flow rates were not acutely influenced by smoking. Black currant consumption preceding smoking induced a significant decrease in sIgA concentrations 5 min after the intervention compared with the baseline ( P=.046), with a further increasing trend, statistically significant, 60 min after the intervention ( P=.025). Although smoking cessation is the most important strategy in the prevention of chronic diseases, the obtained results suggest that the influence of black currant consumption on negative effects of tobacco smoke on salivary flow and immunological status of saliva could partly reduce the smoking-associated risk on oral health. Products of a hydrocarbon fire accident have both chronic and acute health effects. They cause respiratory issues to lung cancer. While fire is the most frequent phenomenon among the offshore accidents, predicting the contaminants' concentration and their behavior are key issues. Safety measures design, such as ventilation and emergency routes based only on predicted contaminants' concentration seems not to be the best approach. In a combustion process, various harmful substances are produced and their concentration cannot be added. The time duration that any individual spends in different locations of an offshore installation also varies significantly. A risk-based approach considers the duration a person is exposed to contaminants at various locations and also evaluates the hazardous impacts. A risk-based approach has also an additivity characteristic which helps to assess overall risk. Through the current study, an approach is proposed to be used for risk assessment of combustion products dispersion phenomenon in a confined or semi-confined facility. Considering CO, NO2 and CH4 as the contaminants of concern, the dispersion of the substances over the layout of the facility after a LNG fire is modeled. Considering different exposure times for three major parts of the facility including the processing area, office area and the accommodation module, the risk contours of CO, NO2 and CH4 over the entire facility are developed. The additivity characteristic of the risk-based approach was used to calculate the overall risk. Background Malignant gliomas are highly proliferative, invasive tumors that are resistant to conventional treatment, and disease progression is often accompanied by physical and mental debilitation. Neurocognitive functioning (NCF) and quality of life (QoL) were evaluated as part of a prospective phase Ib dose-escalation study of topotecan by convection-enhanced delivery (CED) for adult patients with recurrent malignant gliomas. Methods Sixteen patients were enrolled, and NCF and QoL were evaluated using the Cognitive Stability Index and SF-36 at baseline and monthly for 4 months post treatment. Descriptive analyses included the reliable change index for serial evaluations and correlations for associations between outcome variables and age, tumor volume, total topotecan dose, and treatment effect. Results Individual classifications of response to treatment indicated that a majority of patients reported stable scores over the follow-up period. Demographic and treatment-related variables were not associated with outcomes. Baseline processing speed scores were invalid for 6 subjects. Higher rates of valid scores were observed on subsequent administrations. Conclusions As the first study to use CED of any kind to evaluate the impact of CED on NCF or QoL, there was no evidence of severe detriment to either outcome. Long-term evaluation is necessary to track changes in NCF and QoL related to disease progression. Invalid scores suggest that computer-based assessments may not be suitable for all patients with malignant gliomas, especially those with cognitive deficits secondary to their disease.
