Determining the partitioning of sodium chloride into polyamide (PA) reverse osmosis membranes used for seawater desalination is indispensable for optimizing the salt retention of the membranes. Furthermore, the recent quest for ion-selective membranes requires physico-chemical characterization techniques capable of elucidating partitioning phenomena of ions into membrane polymers in general. Quartz-crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D) has been explored for this purpose as it has in theory a sensitivity in the range of pg/cm2 and is an accessible and apparently simple method to use. However, it is a technique that intrinsically lacks an internal reference, and it is affected by liquid bulk changes. As the conventional applications of QCM-D are of biophysical nature where changes in solute concentrations are in the nano to micromolar range, we investigated systematically in how far QCM-D yields reliable results for determining salt partitioning coefficients at concentrations relevant for the industrial-scale. We could clearly demonstrate that QCM-D possibly detects salt absorption only at salt concentrations higher than that in seawater (0.6 M). Furthermore, the variation in the liquid bulk response was so significant that it overlapped with a possibly perceived response due to salt absorption. Therefore, we concluded that salt partitioning coefficients derived from QCM-D data have a low confidence and, in any case, should always be reported accompanied by the raw data. We corroborated these findings with multi-parameter surface plasmon resonance (MP-SPR) which widely confirmed the trends observed with QCM-D. Biographies of Walter B. Cannon (1871-1945) usually present two sides of his life: one, where he was an outstanding man of science in the United States during the so-called "Golden Age of Medicine," and the other, where he was a leading humanitarian activist engaged in myriad causes, notably in the defense of Spanish democracy during the Civil War (1936-1939). However, these biographies fail to take into account that the apparent link between these two sides of his life was his religious conviction. This study summarizes the aims and accomplishments of the American Medical Bureau to Aid the Spanish Democracy (AMBASD) of which Cannon was chair between 1937 and 1939. Then, it examines Cannon's inspirational role on the international relief work with Spanish Republican refugees in France, through the case of the Varsovie Hospital of Toulouse that between 1945 and 1949 was jointly managed by the Unitarian Service Committee (USC) and the Joint Anti-Fascist Refugee Committee (JAFRC), and renamed Varsovie Hospital/Walter B. Cannon Memorial in recognition of the Spanish Republicans' debt for his extraordinary contribution during the Spanish Civil War and beyond. Finally, the article investigates the Unitarian roots of Cannon's humanitarian ethos by exploring the historical relations of this religious movement with science and with many major actors at Harvard University as well as the links of Cannon's relatives to Unitarianism. The analysis reveals Unitarianism's influence on Cannon's views about science, democracy, and liberty, as well as on his remarkable involvement in the medical solidarity movement with the Second Spanish Republic and other similar commitments. In sum, it shows how important is to branch out in our studies of medical and scientific practice to include practitioners' broader social and religious communities in order to understand their motivations, achievements, and behavior. When a failed military coup provoked civil war in Spain in July 1936, the Spanish government made a worldwide plea for assistance. More than 2500 British men answered the call, taking up arms in defence of the democratically-elected Republican government. While this show of international solidarity has been widely documented, much less attention has been given to the massive response made by British women. Thousands of women organized nationwide campaigns to send aid to Spain. One of these women was Frida Stewart (1910–96), a young musician with a strong social conscience. As is the case with so many other women, Frida's recollections, her memoir and correspondence, upon which the following essay is closely based, constitute a valuable historical resource for the analysis of women's experiences during the war and give voice to those whose stories have previously gone unheard. This article analyzes the ideas of Juan Huarte on the most appropriate "mind" for medicine, in particular the supposed opposition between the rational capacities producing the theory and practice of this art, as well as the particular disposition of Jewish people for medical practice. It also examines Huarte's relationship with medical activity in light of his accounts and other sources that tell us of his medical training in Alcalà and his later professional practice. Urban areas are known to modify meteorological variables producing important differences in small spatial scales (i.e. microscale). These affect human thermal comfort conditions and the dispersion of pollutants, especially those emitted inside the urban area, which finally influence quality of life and the use of public open spaces. In this study, the diurnal evolution of meteorological variables measured in four urban spaces is compared with the results provided by ENVI-met (v 4.0). Measurements were carried out during 3 days with different meteorological conditions in Bilbao in the north of the Iberian Peninsula. The evaluation of the model accuracy (i.e. the degree to which modelled values approach measured values) was carried out with several quantitative difference metrics. The results for air temperature and humidity show a good agreement of measured and modelled values independently of the regional meteorological conditions. However, in the case of mean radiant temperature and wind speed, relevant differences are encountered highlighting the limitation of the model to estimate these meteorological variables precisely during diurnal cycles, in the considered evaluation conditions (sites and weather). This work examines the characteristics of the urban heat island (UHI) in a medium-sized city in northern Spain (Bilbao) using 5-year climate data (2005-2009) and the results of three specific measurement campaigns (2009-2010). Urban climate variables are not only compared with those in rural sites but also local climatic differences occurring inside the city are analysed. The findings presented in this paper show the influence of complex topography and sea/land breeze in the urban climate. Spatial characteristics and temporal evolution of UHI is presented. Hourly maximum temperature anomaly (Δ T) occurs just after sunrise and an urban cold island (UCI) is developed after midday. Along the year, mean UHI intensity is highest in autumn and the UCI effect increases in spring and summer in relation with sea breeze cooling potential. Diurnal and seasonal variation of air flow patterns appear to influence significantly on UHI intensity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study presents antifouling waterborne (meth)acrylic coatings prepared through seeded semi-continuous emulsion polymerization, using trace amounts of a zwitterionic monomer 2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl dimethyl-(3-sulfopropyl)ammonium hydroxide (DMAPS). DMAPS was introduced with a dual purpose, to establish a protective layer of DMAPS containing polymer chains on the films' surface, thereby imparting antifouling characteristics, while simultaneously provides in-situ colloidal stability to the emulsion during polymerization. By providing colloidal stability to (meth)acrylic polymer particles in aqueous dispersion (latex), DMAPS-rich units are distributed on the surface of the polymer particles and subsequently on the surface of the resulting polymer films. Subsequent analysis revealed that the films exhibited diminished hydrophilicity, a more textured surface, and diminished affinity for water entrapment compared to conventionally stabilized (meth)acrylic films. Such surfaces demonstrated high resistance to fouling and weak adhesion of the studied BSA protein. These effects were positively influenced by the quantity of DMAPS incorporated within the (meth)acrylic films that allow higher coverage with DMAPS rich polymer chains. The proposed methodology not only emphasizes a potent pathway for the development of environmentally-conscious, waterborne film-forming coating technology but also involves the simultaneous integration of a zwitterionic surface layer, conveying remarkable antifouling attributes to the resulting (meth)acrylic coating film.
