The reproductive diversity of extant cartilaginous fishes (class Chondrichthyes) is extraordinarily broad, reflecting more than 400 million years of evolutionary history. Among their many notable reproductive specialisations are viviparity (live‐bearing reproduction) and matrotrophy (maternal provision of nutrients during gestation). However, attempts to understand the evolution of these traits have yielded highly discrepant conclusions. Here, we compile and analyse the current knowledge on the evolution of reproductive diversity in Chondrichthyes with particular foci on the frequency, phylogenetic distribution, and directionality of evolutionary changes in their modes of reproduction. To characterise the evolutionary transformations, we amassed the largest empirical data set of reproductive parameters to date covering nearly 800 extant species and analysed it via a comprehensive molecular‐based phylogeny. Our phylogenetic reconstructions indicated that the ancestral pattern for Chondrichthyes is 'short single oviparity' (as found in extant holocephalans) in which females lay successive clutches (broods) of one or two eggs. Viviparity has originated at least 12 times, with 10 origins among sharks, one in batoids, and (based on published evidence) another potential origin in a fossil holocephalan. Substantial matrotrophy has evolved at least six times, including one origin of placentotrophy, three separate origins of oophagy (egg ingestion), and two origins of histotrophy (uptake of uterine secretions). In two clades, placentation was replaced by histotrophy. Unlike past reconstructions, our analysis reveals no evidence that viviparity has ever reverted to oviparity in this group. Both viviparity and matrotrophy have arisen by a variety of evolutionary sequences. In addition, the ancestral pattern of oviparity has given rise to three distinct egg‐laying patterns that increased clutch (brood) size and/or involved deposition of eggs at advanced stages of development. Geologically, the ancestral oviparous pattern arose in the Paleozoic. Most origins of viviparity and matrotrophy date to the Mesozoic, while a few that are represented at low taxonomic levels are of Cenozoic origin. Coupled with other recent work, this review points the way towards an emerging consensus on reproductive evolution in chondrichthyans while offering a basis for future functional and evolutionary analyses. This review also contributes to conservation efforts by highlighting taxa whose reproductive specialisations reflect distinctive evolutionary trajectories and that deserve special protection and further investigation. Historically, an understanding of viviparity and its evolution in Old World chameleons (Chamaeleonidae) has lagged behind that of other squamate families. Not only is reproductive information scarce or entirely absent for most chameleon species, but the literature reveals no consensus as to the frequency and ecological circumstances under which chameleon viviparity evolved. We integrated information on reproductive modes for nearly all chameleon species with recently published family‐scale phylogenetic and ecological analyses to clarify aspects of reproductive evolution in chameleons. Ancestral‐trait reconstructions, after accounting for phylogenetic uncertainty, indicated that viviparity has arisen a minimum of three times in Chamaeleonidae, with each origin of live birth in closed‐canopy forests. Our maximum‐likelihood optimization therefore did not support the previous hypotheses of one, two or four origins of viviparity in the family. Past claims that arboreality would not allow for evolution of viviparity were also not supported, nor was a recent suggestion that viviparity has reverted to oviparity. However, cold climates of high latitudes and elevations may have selected for viviparity in arboreal chameleons. While peritoneal pigmentation may facilitate viviparity, its role as an exaptation rather than an adaptation remains equivocal without data from a wider range of chameleon species. Based on a comprehensive review of reproductive modes throughout the family, our study has resolved the number of origins of viviparity in Chamaeleonidae and provided evidence that live birth evolved under arboreal conditions on three separate occasions in this enigmatic squamate group. This study also reveals the value of using phylogenetic analysis in a manner that is robust to uncertainty (rather than simple correlational approaches) when the goal is to reconstruct evolutionary sequences and selective pressures. The reptilian clade Squamata is defined primarily by osteological synapomorphies, few of which are entirely unambiguous. Studies of developing squamate eggs have revealed a uniquely specialized feature not known to occur in any other amniotes. This feature—the yolk cleft/isolated yolk mass complex—lines the ventral hemisphere of the egg. During its formation, extraembryonic mesoderm penetrates the yolk and an exocoelom (the yolk cleft [YC]) forms in association with it, cutting off a thin segment of yolk (the "isolated yolk mass" [IYM]) from the main body of the yolk. The YC–IYM complex has been observed and described in more than 65 squamate species in 12 families. In viviparous species, it contributes to the "omphaloplacenta," a type of yolk sac placenta unique to squamates. The only squamates known to lack the IYM are a few highly placentotrophic skinks with minuscule eggs, viviparous species in which it clearly has been lost. Given its absence in mammals, chelonians, crocodylians, and birds, the YC–IYM complex warrants recognition as a developmental synapomorphy of the squamate clade. Compared with amphibians, oviparous reptiles and birds lay large eggs that contain abundant yolk. Because the yolk is extracellular, it must be taken up by cells of the yolk sac and metabolized so that products of yolk digestion can be transported to the embryo to fuel development. In birds, the yolk is processed by cells that line the inside of the yolk sac. A very different developmental pattern recently has been demonstrated in lizards and snakes in which the yolk sac cavity is converted to a compact mass of blood vessels lined by endodermal cells. In this study, we used scanning electron microscopy to determine which of these developmental patterns (if either) occurs in a representative chelonian, the North American Snapping Turtle (Chelydra serpentina (Linnaeus, 1758)). Our observations reveal that yolk-filled endodermal cells progressively fill the yolk sac cavity. These cells become organized around anastomosing blood vessels, forming elongated strands that are morphologically well suited for yolk digestion and vascular transport of nutrients. This developmental pattern shares features with that of squamates, but it differs markedly from that of birds. These observations indicate that mechanisms of yolk processing in lizards and snakes have an evolutionary history that pre-dates the squamate clade. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

For over a century, research has been conducted on squamates in order to reveal how viviparity has evolved in mammals and other vertebrates. The recent proliferation of studies has yielded much information on anatomical, physiological, ecological, and evolutionary aspects, allowing a reassessment of squamates as model organisms for the study of viviparity. Strong support for the "squamate model" comes from phylogenetic analyses that have shown that squamates have evolved viviparity with great frequency (> 108 origins), at low taxonomic levels, and in geologically recent times. However, available data also indicate that viviparity has evolved by different chronologies and mechanisms in squamates, fishes, and mammals. Further, generalizations about squamates are difficult to make, given the diverse mechanisms by which they achieve viviparity. Thus, similarities between squamates must be demonstrated empirically, and generalizations should be based on quantitative, phylogenetic analyses of multiple lineages. Explanations for similarities between squamate clades can invoke such concepts as evolutionary constraints, exaptations, and selection pressures, and should distinguish between adaptations, correlated attributes, and features that predate viviparity. However, homocentric assumptions of an orthogenetic transformation towards the eutherian condition should be abandoned, along with untested assumptions that viviparity squamates and mammals is similar. The value of the squamate model ultimately may lie in insights it provides into physiological problems rather than in universality of specific mechanisms that have evolved to meet those problems. The article focuses on the Fifth World Congress of Herpetology held at the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa in 2005. It cites papers presented at the conference, including a review of the utility of reptiles to a model of the evolution of viviparity. Also stated is that the rapid development that has been made in understanding the evolution of viviparity was highlighted in the event. Abstract: Embryos of oviparous Reptilia (=turtles, lepidosaurs, crocodilians and birds) extract calcium for growth and development from reserves in the yolk and eggshell. Yolk provides most of the calcium to embryos of lizards and snakes. In contrast, the eggshell supplies most of the calcium for embryonic development of turtles, crocodilians and birds. The yolk sac and chorioallantoic membrane of birds recover and transport calcium from the yolk and eggshell and homologous membranes of squamates (lizards and snakes) probably transport calcium from these two sources as well. We studied calcium mobilization by embryos of the snake Pantherophis guttatus during the interval of greatest embryonic growth and found that the pattern of calcium transfer was similar to other snakes. Calcium recovery from the yolk is relatively low until the penultimate embryonic stage. Calcium removal from the eggshell begins during the same embryonic stage and total eggshell calcium drops in each of the final 2 weeks prior to hatching. The eggshell supplies 28% of the calcium of hatchlings. The timing of calcium transport from the yolk and eggshell is coincident with the timing of growth of the yolk sac and chorioallantoic membrane and expression of the calcium binding protein, calbindin-D28K, in these tissues as reported in previous studies. In the context of earlier work, our findings suggest that the timing and mechanism of calcium transport from the yolk sac of P. guttatus is similar to birds, but that both the timing and mechanism of calcium transport by the chorioallantoic membrane differs. Based on the coincident timing of eggshell calcium loss and embryonic calcium accumulation, we also conclude that recovery of eggshell calcium in P. guttatus is regulated by the embryo. Reduced limbs and limblessness have evolved independently in many lizard clades. Scincidae exhibit a wide range of limb‐reduced morphologies, but only some species have been used to study the embryology of limb reduction (e.g., digit reduction in Chalcides and limb reduction in Scelotes). The genus Brachymeles, a Southeast Asian clade of skinks, includes species with a range of limb morphologies, from pentadactyl to functionally and structurally limbless species. Adults of the small, snake‐like species Brachymeles lukbani show no sign of external limbs in the adult except for small depressions where they might be expected to occur. Here, we show that embryos of B. lukbani in early stages of development, on the other hand, show a truncated but well‐developed limb with a stylopod and a zeugopod, but no signs of an autopod. As development proceeds, the limb's small size persists even while the embryo elongates. These observations are made based on external morphology. We used florescent whole‐mount immunofluorescence to visualize the morphology of skeletal elements and muscles within the embryonic limb of B. lukabni. Early stages have a humerus and separated ulna and radius cartilages; associated with these structures are dorsal and ventral muscle masses as those found in the embryos of other limbed species. While the limb remains small, the pectoral girdle grows in proportion to the rest of the body, with well‐developed skeletal elements and their associated muscles. In later stages of development, we find the small limb is still present under the skin, but there are few indications of its presence, save for the morphology of the scale covering it. By use of CT scanning, we find that the adult morphology consists of a well‐developed pectoral girdle, small humerus, extremely reduced ulna and radius, and well‐developed limb musculature connected to the pectoral girdle. These muscles form in association with a developing limb during embryonic stages, a hint that "limbless" lizards that possess these muscles may have or have had at least transient developing limbs, as we find in B. lukbani. Overall, this newly observed pattern of ontogenetic reduction leads to an externally limbless adult in which a limb rudiment is hidden and covered under the trunk skin, a situation called cryptomelia. The results of this work add to our growing understanding of clade‐specific patterns of limb reduction and the convergent evolution of limbless phenotypes through different developmental processes. Our knowledge of the conservation status of reptiles, the most diverse class of terrestrial vertebrates, has improved dramatically over the past decade, but still lags behind that of the other tetrapod groups. Here, we conduct the first comprehensive evaluation (~92% of the world's ~1714 described species) of the conservation status of skinks (Scincidae), a speciose reptile family with a worldwide distribution. Using International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) criteria, we report that ~20% of species are threatened with extinction, and nine species are Extinct or Extinct in the Wild. The highest levels of threat are evident in Madagascar and the Neotropics, and in the subfamilies Mabuyinae, Eugongylinae and Scincinae. The vast majority of threatened skink species were listed based primarily on their small geographic ranges (Criterion B, 83%; Criterion D2, 13%). Although the population trend of 42% of species was stable, 14% have declining populations. The key threats to skinks are habitat loss due to agriculture, invasive species, and biological resource use (e.g., hunting, timber harvesting). The distributions of 61% of species do not overlap with protected areas. Despite our improved knowledge of the conservation status of the world's skinks, 8% of species remain to be assessed, and 14% are listed as Data Deficient. The conservation status of almost a quarter of the world's skink species thus remains unknown. We use our updated knowledge of the conservation status of the group to develop and outline the priorities for the conservation assessment and management of the world's skink species. • 20% of skink species are threatened with extinction, and nine species are extinct. • Key threats to skinks are agriculture, invasive species and biological resource use. • Most species listed under IUCN Red List Criterion B • Taxonomic and geographic biases in extinction risk are evident in skinks. • 8% of skink species remain unassessed, and 14% are listed as Data Deficient.
