The role of eosinophils in airway inflammation and asthma pathogenesis is well established, with raised eosinophil counts in blood and sputum associated with increased disease severity and risk of asthma exacerbation. Conversely, there is also preliminary evidence suggesting antiviral properties of eosinophils in the airways. These dual roles for eosinophils are particularly pertinent as respiratory virus infections contribute to asthma exacerbations. Biologic therapies targeting key molecules implicated in eosinophil‐associated pathologies have been approved in patients with severe asthma and, therefore, the effects of depleting eosinophils in a clinical setting are of considerable interest. This review discusses the pathological and antiviral roles of eosinophils in asthma and exacerbations. We also highlight the significant reduction in asthma exacerbations seen with biologic therapies, even at the height of the respiratory virus season. Furthermore, we discuss the implications of these findings in relation to the role of eosinophils in inflammation and antiviral responses to respiratory virus infection in asthma. Compared to research about the effects of work‐related interpersonal experiences on employee behaviours at home, research on whether and how home‐related interpersonal experiences can affect employee behaviours at work has received less attention. This study aimed to contribute to this literature by examining whether interpersonal conflict at home can predict employee silence through exhaustion at work. The moderating effect of affective commitment on the relationship between interpersonal conflict at home and exhaustion was also explored. Using a two‐wave design with data from 246 full‐time employees, the current study found that interpersonal conflict at home positively predicted employee silence through exhaustion at work. Further, affective commitment exacerbated the relationship between interpersonal conflict at home and exhaustion at work. Our findings extend the understanding of mediating and moderating mechanisms for the effect of negative experiences at home on work behaviours. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• Manufacturing sector in developing countries has been subject to different shocks. • These shocks comprise technology improvement, trade liberalisation, and China. • Trade liberalisation has harmed manufacturing employment on average. • The impact has been strongest in sub-Saharan African and Latin American countries. The manufacturing sector has played an important role in the structural transformation process in the developing world by providing jobs and income opportunities. Using data from 131 developing countries from 1991 to 2020, we estimate the impact of trade liberalisation on manufacturing employment using panel fixed-effects and instrumental variable regression approaches. We find that trade liberalisation – on average – has harmed manufacturing employment in developing countries. There are considerable differences at the regional level; the impact has been most substantial in sub-Saharan African and Latin American countries. At least in these regions, trade liberalisation has contributed to deindustrialisation. Policies that improve labour productivity in manufacturing will increase the competitiveness of manufacturing firms in these countries in the face of growing trade globalisation. Background Methods Results Discussion Three‐quarters of pregnancy‐related deaths occur from 1 day to 1 year after birth, and medical complications frequently occur after birth. Postpartum health concerns are often urgent, requiring timely medical care, which may contribute to a reliance on acute care. One approach to improving postpartum health is to investigate birthing parents' accounts of acute care use in the months after birth, which is what we did in this study.This mixed‐methods study included questionnaire responses, semi‐structured interviews, and chart review of 18 English‐speaking individuals who used acute care in the 90 days after birth in the southeastern United States. Interviews were conducted remotely, recorded, and professionally transcribed. Qualitative data were inductively coded to iteratively develop categories and themes with respect to contributors and barriers to postpartum acute care use.Birthing parents engaged in complex decision‐making processes to decide where and when to seek postpartum acute care in response to their urgent health concerns. Many described fear and uncertainty about their postpartum health. Most participants contacted a healthcare practitioner before using acute care, followed their guidance, and were treated or otherwise reassured at the acute care visit.These findings suggest multilevel opportunities for strengthening healthcare systems, including better‐preparing individuals for the postpartum period and structuring care to accommodate birthing parents and include their support systems. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is associated with alterations in neuroendocrine function, primarily the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis, including lower expression of the glucocorticoid receptor (GR) and its target genes in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) or full blood. We previously found reduced mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) expression in MS patients' peripheral blood. MS is being treated with a widening variety of disease-modifying treatments (DMT), some of which have similar efficacy but different mechanisms of action; body-fluid biomarkers to support the choice of the optimal initial DMT and/or to indicate an unsatisfactory response before clinical activity are unavailable. Using cell culture of volunteers' PBMCs and subsequent gene expression analysis (microarray and qPCR validation), we identified the mRNA expression of OTUD1 to represent MR signaling. The MR and MR target gene expression levels were then measured in full blood samples. In 119 MS (or CIS) patients, the expression of both MR and OTUD1 was lower than in 42 controls. The expression pattern was related to treatment, with the MR expression being particularly low in patients treated with fingolimod. While MR signaling may be involved in the therapeutic effects of some disease-modifying treatments, MR and OTUD1 expression can complement the neuroendocrine assessment of MS disease course. Although calls for responding to migration-related diversity in education are not novel, few studies have examined linguistic and affective outcomes of diversity-sensitive approaches for vocabulary teaching. This article reports on an intervention study in which beginner English-foreign-language learners (N = 51, Mage = 8.67 years) worked on one textbook unit (five 45-min lessons). Teachers supplemented the unit with translingual scaffolds and encouraged students to draw on and use their linguistic resources (plurilingual group), or stimulated appreciation of plurilingualism and positive language attitudes (motivation group). We assessed language gains through pre-, post-, and follow-up tests, and measured affect after each lesson. Both intervention groups outperformed the control group, which worked only with the textbooks, regarding productive vocabulary learning. Translingual scaffolding was beneficial for sustaining vocabulary gains. The data further indicate that motivational activities stimulate positive affect, but only the plurilingual group showed lower negative affect than the control group. Overall, the data suggest that intervention activities can augment productive vocabulary and support student well-being. We argue that future studies should pay more attention to affective outcomes when exploring ways of addressing migration-related diversity in the classroom. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) is frequently complicated by delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI), leading to poor outcomes. Early diagnosis of DCI is crucial for improving survival and outcomes but remains challenging in comatose patients. In this study, we aimed to evaluate computed tomography with angiography and perfusion (P-CT) as a screening modality on postictal days four and eight for impending DCI after aSAH in comatose patients using vasospasm with hypoperfusion (hVS) as a surrogate and DCI-related infarction as an outcome measure. Two objectives were set: (1) to evaluate the screening's ability to accurately risk stratify patients and (2) to assess the validity of P-CT screening. Methods: We conducted a retrospective review of the records of comatose patients with aSAH from January 2019 to December 2021 who were monitored with P-CT scans on days four and eight. The event rates of DCI-related infarction, hVS, and endovascular rescue therapy (ERT) were analyzed, and the sensitivity, specificity, negative predictive value (NPV), and positive predictive value (PPV) for DCI were calculated. DCI-related infarction was defined as new secondary cerebral infarction > 48 h < 6 weeks post aSAH not attributable to other causes, and hVS was defined as arterial narrowing with corresponding hypoperfusion on P-CT. Results: Fifty-six comatose patients were included, and 98 P-CT scans were performed. The incidence of DCI-related infarction was 40%. Screening P-CT on days four and eight found vasospasm in 23% of all patients, including 11% with hVS. A positive hVS on day four or eight revealed a relative risk of 2.4 [95% confidence interval (CI) 1.13–5.11, p = 0.03], sensitivity of 23% (95% CI 8–45, p = 0.03), specificity of 95% (95% CI 36–100, p = 0.03), PPV of 0.83 (95% CI 0.36–1.00, p = 0.03), and NPV of 0.65 (95% CI 0.50–0.78). Six positive P-CT scans led to digital subtraction angiography in five patients, three of whom received ERT. All ERT-intervened patients developed DCI-related infarction. Conclusions: P-CT resulted in few interventions and often resulted in late detection of DCI at an irreversible stage. Although a positive P-CT result accurately predicts impending DCI-related infarction, screening on days four and eight alone in comatose patients with aSAH often fails to timely detect impending DCI. Based on our analysis, we cannot recommend P-CT as a screening modality. P-CT is likely best used as a confirmatory test prior to invasive interventions when guided by continuous multimodal monitoring; however, prospective studies with comparison groups are warranted. Substantial tariff reductions and increased usage of non‐tariff measures (NTMs) have been key dynamics of global trade policy in recent decades. We use highly disaggregated data on applied most favored nation tariffs, NTMs, and trade to investigate how International Monetary Fund (IMF) conditionality as a form of external pressure to reduce tariffs contributed to this dynamic in developing countries. Our results show that structural adjustment programs (SAPs) effectively lowered tariffs without increasing the usage of NTMs. A typical three‐year program containing tariff conditionality decreased tariff rates in the range of 2.0 to 3.8 percentage points in total. Furthermore, IMF programs reduced NTM initializations significantly. We also show that tariff conditionality was more effective in initiating tariff cuts for countries without previous greater globalization efforts than being a "catalyst" for ongoing liberalization efforts. As part of recent years' efforts at reaching a more context- and diversity-sensitive study of international relations, the nexus between fields of IR and Area Studies (AS) has received a renewed attention. While AS is usually presented as the "contextualizer" of the disciplines, this forum reverses the perspective by suggesting that an awareness of both diversity and context is also relevant when it comes to understanding the evolution of the field of AS and its relations to IR. In this forum, a selection of scholars with diverse backgrounds (US, Middle East, Europe, Latin America, Africa, and Central Asia), different (inter)disciplinary trainings and regional orientations examines how various fields of AS and its relations to the disciplines vary, and what follows from a stronger attention to such kind of diversity. By contextualizing the contextualizers, the forum brings attention to how a context-sensitive field can also suffer from its own provincialism. While the US-centric narrative about AS might have been almost "hegemonic," at closer inspection, it turns out that AS in different (sub)disciplinary and geographical settings have evolved differently, and in some places the so-called Area Studies controversy (ASC) has been almost absent. A broadening of the perspective also reveals how the challenges to a successful cross-fertilization are not limited to those outlined in the "classic" ASC, but the forum does simultaneously offer encouraging lessons on how dialogues between area specialists and discipline-oriented scholars can help to overcome epistemological, theoretical, or methodological blind spots. Rather than presenting the IR/AS nexus as a panacea per se, the aim of the forum is therefore to invite to a broader and more self-reflective discussion on some of the opportunities as well as challenges associated with this strategy for making the study of international relations more context-sensitive and attentive to different forms of diversity. OBJECTIVE: Sepsis is a leading cause of mortality. Predicting outcomes is challenging and few biomarkers perform well. Defects in the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) can predict clinical outcomes in sepsis and may outperform traditional biomarkers. We postulated that RAS dysfunction (elevated active renin, angiotensin 1-7 [Ang-(1-7)], and angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) activity with depressed Ang-II and ACE activity) would be associated with mortality in a cohort of septic patients. DESIGN: Post hoc analysis of patients enrolled in the Vitamin C, Thiamine, and Steroids in Sepsis (VICTAS) randomized controlled trial. SETTING: Forty-three hospitals across the United States. PATIENTS: Biorepository samples of 103 patients. INTERVENTIONS: We analyzed day 0 (within 24 hr of respiratory failure, septic shock, or both) and day 3 samples ( n = 103 and 95, respectively) for assessment of the RAS. The association of RAS values with 30-day mortality was determined using Cox proportional hazards regression with multivariable adjustments for age, sex, VICTAS treatment arm, systolic blood pressure, Sequential Organ Failure Assessment Score, and vasopressor use. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: High baseline active renin values were associated with higher 30-day mortality when dichotomized to the median of 188.7 pg/mL (hazard ratio [HR] = 2.84 [95% CI, 1.10-7.33], p = 0.031) or stratified into quartiles (Q1 = ref, HRQ2 = 2.01 [0.37-11.04], HR Q3 = 3.22 [0.64-16.28], HRQ4 = 5.58 [1.18-26.32], p for linear trend = 0.023). A 1- sd (593.6 pg/mL) increase in renin from day 0 to day 3 was associated with increased mortality (HR = 3.75 [95% CI, 1.94-7.22], p < 0.001), and patients whose renin decreased had improved survival compared with those whose renin increased (HR 0.22 [95% CI, 0.08-0.60], p = 0.003). Ang-(1-7), ACE2 activity, Ang-II and ACE activity did not show this association. Mortality was attenuated in patients with renin over the median on day 0 who received the VICTAS intervention, but not on day 3 ( p interaction 0.020 and 0.137, respectively). There were no additional consistent patterns of mortality on the RAS from the VICTAS intervention. CONCLUSIONS: Baseline serum active renin levels were strongly associated with mortality in critically ill patients with sepsis. The starting point for many analyses of European state development is the historical fragmentation of territorial authority. The dominant bellicist explanation for state formation argues that this fragmentation was an unintended consequence of imperial collapse, and that warfare in the early modern era overcame fragmentation by winnowing out small polities and consolidating strong states. Using new data on papal conflict and religious institutions, I show instead that political fragmentation was the outcome of deliberate choices, that it is closely associated with papal conflict, and that political fragmentation persisted for longer than the bellicist explanations would predict. The medieval Catholic Church deliberately and effectively splintered political power in Europe by forming temporal alliances, funding proxy wars, launching crusades, and advancing ideology to ensure its autonomy and power. The article discusses the fragmentation of political authority in Europe during the Middle Ages and its impact on state formation. The authors argue that the collapse of Carolingian rule allowed a church reform movement to spread across Western Europe, leading to changes in the relationship between religious and lay actors. East-Central Europe is at odds with itself regarding the response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Why are "post-communist" democracies not standing together as one with a fledgling democracy that is under attack by a dictatorship? The answer lies in the material and political benefits that individual politicians and political parties receive from Russia. Two consequences follow from this dynamic: the validation of "Russian imperial claims" and reduced support for Ukraine. This analysis shows that the immediate interests and profits of domestic politicians matter far more than the long shadows of history, leading to a complex tapestry of responses in the region. The diversity of these countries' approaches to Ukraine is just one reason why East-Central Europe is now more remarkable for its divisions and contrasts than a collective past or a common future. Research suggests that issue involvement moderates the efficacy of gain and loss frames, yet the extent to which this is true across behaviors and contexts is an open question. In this study, I examined the moderating role of issue involvement in the context of fruit and vegetable intake in Lima, Peru. Only 11.3% of the Peruvian population 15 years old or older consume five servings of fruits and vegetables every day, even though this health behavior prevents the onset of chronic diseases, including diabetes and hypertension. Guided by the Reasoned Action Approach and research about the effects of gain and loss frames, I conducted an experiment (N=253, three conditions: gain-framed messages condition; loss-framed messages condition; and no-message, control condition) to assess the effect of gain- and loss-framed messages on mothers' intentions to increase fruits and vegetables consumption among their 1- to 5-year-old children in Lima. Results indicated that mothers who saw gain-framed messages reported greater intentions than those who did not see any messages (control condition). However, issue involvement moderated the effect of gain frames, such that mothers low in issue involvement reported greater intentions after seeing the gain-framed messages. Minimalism is the view that our concept of truth is constituted by our disposition to accept instances of the truth schema 'The proposition that p is true if and only if p'. The generalisation problem is the challenge to account for universal generalisations concerning logical truths such as 'Every proposition of the form 〈if p, then p〉 is true'. This paper argues that such generalisations can be deduced using a single example of the logical truth in question and a single corresponding instance of the truth schema, employing the logical method of reasoning with arbitrary instances of universal and existential generalisations. Suggesting an inferentialist construal of Minimalism, the paper introduces conditional and general acceptance dispositions, distinguishes inferential meaning constitution from implicit definition, highlights the inferential nature of acceptance of instances of the truth schema, sketches a suitable account of structured propositions, compares higher-order with first-order means of quantification, and argues that the conception of truth Minimalism attributes to ordinary speakers is essentially inferential. Background: During continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), anticoagulants are recommended for patients at low risk of bleeding and not already receiving systemic anticoagulants. Current anticoagulants used in CRRT in the US are systemic heparins or regional citrate. To better understand use of anticoagulants for CRRT in the US, we surveyed nephrologists and critical care medicine (CCM) specialists. Methods: The survey contained 30 questions. Respondents were board certified and worked in intensive care units of academic medical centers or community hospitals. Results: 150 physicians (70 nephrologists and 80 CCM) completed the survey. Mean number of CRRT machines in use increased ∼30% from the pre-pandemic era to 2022. Unfractionated heparin was the most used anticoagulant (43% of estimated patients) followed by citrate (28%). Respondents reported 29% of patients received no anticoagulant. Risk of hypocalcemia (52%) and citrate safety (42%) were the predominant reasons given for using no anticoagulant instead of citrate in heparin-intolerant patients. 84% said filter clogging was a problem when no anticoagulant was used, and almost 25% said increased transfusions were necessary. Respondents using heparin (n = 131) considered it inexpensive and easily obtainable, although of moderate safety, citing concerns of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia and bleeding. Anticoagulant citrate dextrose solution was the most used citrate. Respondents estimated that 37% of patients receiving citrate develop hypocalcemia and 17% citrate lock. Conclusions: Given the increased use of CRRT and the lack of approved, safe, and effective anticoagulant choices for CRRT in the US, effective use of current and other anticoagulant options needs to be evaluated. The study of the semiochemicals produced by the flowers of Impatiens spp. is an important topic that may explain the reason for the rapid expansion of some species in this genus. Impatiens L. belongs to the Balsaminaceae family, which includes several species considered to be invasive plants in Europe. This study aimed to characterize the phytochemistry of four naturally occurring plant species in Poland, including three invasive alien taxa (Impatiens parviflora, I. glandulifera, and I. capensis) and one native species (I. noli-tangere). Gas chromatographic techniques were used to assess phytochemical profiles of chemical attractant cues in their pollination biology. We detected differences in the scent profiles of the investigated species. All the examined Impatiens species produce various alcohols, i.e., heptacosanol, octacosanol, aldehydes (e.g., octadecanal, eicosanal, etc.), and fatty acids, as well as long-chain hydrocarbons such as dodecane, tricosane, petacosane, hexacosane, and farnesene. Impatiens parviflora, I. glandulifera, and I. capensis produce geraniol and linalool, which attract members of the Apidae family, including bumblebees and honeybees. Impatiens parviflora also produces linalool-derived monoterpenes (linalool oxide and 8-hydroxylinalool), which are a strong attractant for Diptera; this may clarify why the species is mainly visited and pollinated by syrphid flies. Mote Marine Laboratory serves as the lead institution on the National Science Foundation funded Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation: Marine Science Laboratory Alliance Center of Excellence (MarSci-LACE). The goal of this innovative Center of Excellence is to understand the impact of marine STEM undergraduate research experiences, specifically those conducted at non-academic, independent research institutions. The Center considers not only undergraduate students' learning but also psychosocial factors, career aspirations, the impacts of the approaches and perspectives of mentors, institutional support of student learning, and mentor skill development. Through this project, a number of resources have been developed, including the MarSci-LACE Mentor Development Workshop, an Intern Resource Guide and website, a Mentor Resource Guide, and intern recruitment materials. Light perception for orientation in zoospore-forming fungi is linked to homo- or heterodimeric rhodopsin-guanylyl cyclases (RGCs). Heterodimeric RGCs, first identified in the chytrid Rhizoclosmatium globosum, consist of an unusual near-infrared absorbing highly fluorescent sensitizer neorhodopsin (NeoR) that is paired with a visual light-absorbing rhodopsin responsible for enzyme activation. Here, we present a comprehensive analysis of the distribution of RGC genes in early-branching fungi using currently available genetic data. Among the characterized RGCs, we identified red-sensitive homodimeric RGC variants with maximal light activation close to 600 nm, which allow for red-light control of GTP to cGMP conversion in mammalian cells. Heterodimeric RGC complexes have evolved due to a single gene duplication within the branching of Chytridiales and show a spectral range for maximal light activation between 480 to 600 nm. In contrast, the spectral sensitivity of NeoRs is reaching into the near-infrared range with maximal absorption between 641 and 721 nm, setting the low energy spectral edge of rhodopsins so far. Based on natural NeoR variants and mutational studies, we reevaluated the role of the counterion-triad proposed to cause the extreme redshift. With the help of chimera constructs, we disclose that the cyclase domain is crucial for functioning as homo- or heterodimers, which enables the adaptation of the spectral sensitivity by modular exchange of the photosensor. The extreme spectral plasticity of retinal chromophores in native photoreceptors provides broad perspectives on the achievable spectral adaptation for rhodopsin-based molecular tools ranging from UVB into the near-infrared. Catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) is a promising route to upgrade bio‐oils from plants or pyrolysis to basic chemicals. KA‐oil (cyclohexanol/‐one) is an example of a highly valuable feedstock for the industrial synthesis of caprolactam and perlon, which can potentially be produced via a completely sustainable route. This work investigates the alkaline promoter effects on Ni‐based catalysts for the selective HDO of lignin surrogate guaiacol using mesoporous Ni/MgO and co‐impregnated Ni‐MgO/SiO2 catalysts. Due to preferred demethoxylation by alkaline oxides and their accumulation on nickel corners, responsible for dehydration, conversion, and selectivity for KA‐oil rise. Furthermore, influences of operating parameters are investigated and optimized by design of experiments (DoE), while long‐term stability (24 h) and water resistance remain high. In a final proof of concept, the application of Ni‐CaO/SiO2 was the most promising material (U=93 %, S=86 %), demonstrating a sustainable route from lignin‐based bio‐oil to produce a bulk commodity for caprolactam synthesis. Purpose: The most frequent therapy of hydrocephalus is implantation of ventriculoperitoneal shunts for diverting cerebrospinal into the peritoneal cavity. We compared two adjustable valves, proGAV and proGAV 2.0, for complications resulting in revision surgery. Methods: Four hundred patients undergoing primary shunt implantation between 2014 and 2020 were analyzed for overall revision rate, 1-year revision rate, and revision-free survival observing patient age, sex, etiology of hydrocephalus, implantation site, prior diversion of cerebrospinal fluid, and cause of revision. Results: All data were available of all 400 patients (female/male 208/192). Overall, 99 patients underwent revision surgery after primary implantation. proGAV valve was implanted in 283 patients, and proGAV 2.0 valves were implanted in 117 patients. There was no significant difference between the two shunt valves concerning revision rate (p = 0.8069), 1-year revision rate (p = 0.9077), revision-free survival (p = 0.6921), and overall survival (p = 0.3232). Regarding 1-year revision rate, we observed no significant difference between the two shunt valves in pediatric patients (40.7% vs 27.6%; p = 0.2247). Revision operation had to be performed more frequently in pediatric patients (46.6% vs 24.8%; p = 0.0093) with a significant higher number of total revisions with proGAV than proGAV 2.0 (33 of 59 implanted shunts [55.9%] vs. 8 of 29 implanted shunts [27.6%]; p = 0.0110) most likely due to longer follow-up in the proGAV-group. For this reason, we clearly put emphasis on analyzing results regarding 1-year revision rate. Conclusion: According to the target variables we analyzed, aside from lifetime revision rate in pediatric patients, there is no significant difference between the two shunt valves. The Stroop test is a widely used neuropsychological test measuring attention and conflict resolution, which shows sensitivity across a range of diseases, including Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and Huntington's diseases. A rodent analogue of the Stroop test, the Response-Conflict task (rRCT), allows for systematic investigation of the neural systems underpinning performance in this test. Little is known about the involvement of the basal ganglia in this neural process. The aim of this study was to use the rRCT to determine whether striatal subregions are recruited during conflict resolution processing. To achieve this, rats were exposed to Congruent or Incongruent stimuli in the rRCT and the expression patterns of the immediate early gene Zif268 were analysed throughout cortical, hippocampal and basal ganglia subregions. The results confirmed the previously reported involvement of prefrontal cortical and hippocampal regions, as well as identifying a specific role for the dysgranular (but not granular) retrosplenial cortex in conflict resolution. Finally, performance accuracy correlated significantly with reduced neural activation in the dorsomedial striatum. Involvement of the basal ganglia in this neural process has not previously been reported. These data demonstrate that the cognitive process of conflict resolution requires not only prefrontal cortical regions, but also recruits the dysgranular retrosplenial cortex and the medial region of the neostriatum. Purpose: This study examined the association between household food insufficiency and flourishing among young children (6 months-5 years) in the U.S. and assessed whether sleep adequacy modifies this association.Methods: We used data from the 2018-2020 National Surveys of Children's Health. Adjusted prevalence differences and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for the association between household food insufficiency and flourishing were modeled using average marginal predictions from logistic regression models. Sleep adequacy was assessed as an effect measure modifier on the additive scale.Results: Evidence supports additive scale effect measure modification of the food insufficiency-flourishing association by sleep adequacy (Likelihood Ratio Test statistic = 12.4, degrees of freedom = 2, P < .05). Adjusted for potential confounders, the prevalence of flourishing was 13.2 percentage points lower (95% CI: -22.6, -3.7) for children in households with insufficient food and inadequate sleep compared to those with sufficient food and adequate sleep.Conclusions: Our findings suggest that having enough food and enough sleep are associated with greater wellbeing. Although the expression of co-stimulatory molecules plays an important role in the immune system, only little is known about their regulation in dementias. Therefore, we determined the expression of CD28, ICOS (CD278) and CTLA-4 (CD152) by CD4 + and CD8 + T cells in the peripheral blood of patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI; N = 19), Alzheimer's disease (AD; N = 51), vascular dementia (VD; N = 21) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD; N = 6) at the point in time of diagnosis compared to 19 non-demented elderly persons. The expression of CD28 and ICOS by CD4 + and CD8 + T cells was not changed in AD, FTD or VD patients. The expression of the negative regulator CTLA-4 was increased by CD4 + T cells from AD and FTD patients and by CD8 + T cells from VD patients. The classification of the AD patients according to the severity of the disorder showed stage-dependent alterations of CD28, ICOS and CTLA-4 expression. In AD patients, the correlation analysis showed an association between the decline in CD28 + T cells and the increase in CTLA-4 + T cells with cognitive decline, measured by the mini-mental state examination (MMSE), tau proteins and Amyloid-β, important AD biomarkers in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). In FTD patients, a positive association between Q Albumin, a marker for blood-CSF-barrier function, and CD28 and a negative correlation between Q Albumin and ICOS expression were determined. Our data suggest a dysregulated balance between the expression of negative and positive co-stimulatory molecules by T cells in AD patients, which might contribute to chronic inflammation observed in dementia. Aberrant glycosylation plays a crucial role in tumour progression and invasiveness. Tumour-associated carbohydrate antigens (TACAs) represent a valuable set of targets for immunotherapeutic approaches. The poor immunogenicity of glycan structures, however, requires a more effective and well-directed way of targeting TACAs on the surface of cancer cells than antibodies. The glycosphingolipid globotriaosylceramide (Gb3) is a well-established TACA present in a multitude of cancer types. Its overexpression has been linked to metastasis, invasiveness, and multidrug resistance. In the present study, we propose to use a dimeric fragment of the Shiga toxin B-subunit (StxB) to selectively target Gb3-positive cancer cells in a StxB-scFv UCHT1 lectibody. The lectibody, comprised of a lectin and the UCHT1 antibody fragment, was produced in E. coli and purified via Ni-NTA affinity chromatography. Specificity of the lectibody towards Gb3-positive cancer cell lines and specificity towards the CD3 receptor on T cells, was assessed using flow cytometry. We evaluated the efficacy of the lectibody in redirecting T cell cytotoxicity towards Gb3-overexpressing cancer cells in luciferase-based cytotoxicity in vitro assays. The StxB-scFv UCHT1 lectibody has proven specific for Gb3 and could induce the killing of up to 80% of Gb3-overexpressing cancer cells in haemorrhagic and solid tumours. The lectibody developed in this study, therefore, highlights the potential that lectibodies and lectins in general have for usage in immunotherapeutic approaches to boost the efficacy of established cancer treatments. Background: Studying the effects of smoking intensity is important to evaluate the risk of tobacco use on a range of illnesses, such as as sarcopenia among the elderly. Thus, this study aimed to analyze the effects of pack-years of cigarette smoking on the diaphragm muscle (DIAm) histopathology of postmortem samples. Methods: Subjects were divided into three groups: never-smoker (n = 46); less than 30 pack-years of smoking (n = 12); and more than 30 pack-years of smoking (n = 30). Diaphragm samples were stained with Picrosirius red and hematoxylin and eosin stain for general structure. Results: Participants with more than 30 pack-years of cigarette smoking had a significant increase in adipocytes, blood vessels and collagen deposit, as well as an increase in histopathological alterations. In Brazil, there is heterogeneity in the quality of elementary education. Thus, if the adjustment of performance in neuropsychological tests is done by the number of years of schooling, it may result in false diagnoses in older adults. To counteract this limitation, an instrument such as the Brazilian Word Accentuation Test (WAT-Br) was created with the reasoning that the pre-morbid intelligence that is measured by the test would be a more accurate comparison parameter than the level of education to detect cognitive impairment. The aim of the study was to evaluate the stability of the WAT-Br at the early stages of cognitive impairment, comparing elderly people with cognitively normal performance (NCD), mild Alzheimer's disease (mild AD) and mild cognitive impairment amnestic (MCIa) and to evaluate the test -retest. The frequency pairing technique was used, 135 individuals were classified, after clinical and neuropsychological evaluation: NCD, MCIa and mild AD. A non-dementia subsample, provided for convenience, was recruited to verify test-retest reliability using the intraclass correlation coefficient. Stability of performance between the groups obtained (p = 0.603). A retest reliability test was evaluated after 12.7 (± 0.7) months, with an ICC of 0.97 (95%CI; 0.94 - 0.98). Neurovascular compression syndromes (NVCSs) are a group of neurological disorders characterized by compression of a cranial nerve and include trigeminal neuralgia (TN), hemifacial spasm, geniculate neuralgia, glossopharyngeal neuralgia, vestibular paroxysmia, and trochlear palsy. The European Academy of Neurology recommends constructive interference in steady-state/fast imaging employing steady-state (CISS/FIESTA) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the evaluation of medically intractable TN, but similar recommendations do not exist for the remaining NVCSs. We conducted a retrospective chart review of 300 patients with an NVCS who underwent microvascular decompression (MVD) by a single neurosurgeon from 2004 to 2021. Data were collected on preoperative diagnosis, pre- and postoperative symptoms, presence/absence of preoperative high-spatial-resolution CISS/FIESTA MRI, and intraoperative findings. Rates of symptomatic improvement were used as a correlate of surgical success. The rate of symptomatic improvement in the patients with a preoperative CISS/FIESTA MRI was 5.8% greater than those without preoperative high-spatial-resolution neuroimaging (98.8% vs. 93%, respectively; P = 0.008). Stratified by diagnosis, patients with TN had the greatest difference in surgical success between the 2 groups (99.3% vs. 92.9%, n = 268; P = 0.006). No statistically significant differences were observed in the other NVCSs, although positive trends were noted. Preoperative CISS/FIESTA MRI correlated with greater rates of surgical success in cases of medically intractable TN; however, definitive conclusions could not be made regarding the remaining NVCSs. We support the recommendation that this imaging modality be included as part of the standard of practice for the evaluation and management of TN and encourage future studies to further elucidate this relationship for the less common NVCSs using a larger cohort. The selective production of hydrocarbons for the chemical industry from biogenic feedstock is a significant challenge when ensuring hydrocarbon and fuel supply, despite the heterogeneity of this feed. In this study, guaiacol, as a surrogate for complex lignin-based biomass resources, is converted by an inert silica carrier material with different d-metal impregnation (Mo, W, Re, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Pd, Ag) to reveal the reasons for different product selectivity to hydrogenated and deoxygenated hydrocarbon products. Hydrogen at 15 bar (gauge) and guaiacol are converted on metal/silica catalysts between 250 °C and 400 °C, while the physicochemical catalyst properties are characterized before and after catalytic tests. Volcano plots for the conversion, hydrogenation and deoxygenation products versus the d-band energy, surface atom distance and fouling properties reveal three groups of metals: (i) those that are less active and show high coking (Ag, α-Fe); (ii) those that show high activity for hydrogenation (β-Co, Ni, Pd) and, therefore, preferably yielded cyclohexane, cyclohexanol and 2-methoxycyclohexanol; (iii) those that preferably promote deoxygenation (Mo, W, Re, Cu) and, therefore, promoted the formation of phenol, benzene, anisole and catechol. The results are summarized in a pseudo van Krevelen diagram and interpreted as a complex interdependency from Sabatier's principle of geometric correspondence of hexagonal metal surface for hydrogenation, electronic correspondence for the activation of hydrogen and electronic correspondence by oxophilicity for deoxygenation from the d-band center model. Food environments of urban informal settlements are likely drivers of dietary intake among residents of such settlements. Yet, few attempts have been made to describe them. The objective of this study was to characterize the food environment of a densely-populated informal settlement in Nairobi, Kenya according to the obesogenic properties and spatial distribution of its food vendors. In July–August 2019, we identified food vendors in the settlement and classified them into obesogenic risk categories based on the types of food that they sold. We calculated descriptive statistics and assessed clustering according to obesogenic risk using Ripley's K function. Foods most commonly sold among the 456 vendors in the analytic sample were sweets/confectionary (29% of vendors), raw vegetables (28%), fried starches (23%), and fruits (21%). Forty-four percent of vendors were classified as low-risk, protective; 34% as high-risk, non-protective; 16% as low-risk, non-protective; and 6% as high-risk, protective. The mean distance (95% confidence interval) to the nearest vendor of the same obesogenic risk category was 26 m (21, 31) for vendors in the low-risk, protective group; 29 m (25, 33) in the high-risk, non-protective group; 114 m (88, 139) in the high-risk, protective group; and 43 m (30, 56) in the low-risk, non-protective group. Clustering was significant for all obesogenic risk groups except for the high-risk, protective. Our findings indicate a duality of obesogenic and anti-obesogenic foods in this environment. Soil temperature extremes are not uncommon when woody fuels are ignited in prescribed burns or wildfires. Whether this leads to substantial loss of soil organic matter or microbial life is unclear. We created a soil heat gradient by burning four levels of masticated woody fuels (0, 34, 101, and 169 Mg ha−1) to determine if heat thresholds produce abrupt changes in soil C, N, microbial biomass, or fungal hyphae. Twenty‐four burns were conducted with masticated fuels overlaying a clay loam soil equilibrated at either 4 or 25% volumetric soil water content. Maximum temperatures ranged from 40 to 450 °C depending on fuel load and soil moisture content, with heat duration (>60 °C) as great as 22 h. Moist soil quenched temperatures two‐ to threefold compared with dry soil at comparable fuel loads. A slight, gradual decline in total C and N was found with increasing temperature and heat duration, reaching a maximum loss of 14–18% of the total at the highest heat load. Available NH4 increased linearly starting at 150–175 °C and reached a maximum 15‐fold increase relative to unburned soil by 450 °C. Nitrification (30 d post‐fire) was low regardless of treatment and was essentially eliminated at the highest temperatures. Microbial biomass declined curvilinearly with increased heating, approaching 65% loss compared with unburned soil, and was most rapid in moist soil once temperatures exceeded 60–70 °C. Ultimately, we found no evidence of abrupt heat thresholds for these common soil properties. Instead, property changes followed a slightly declining trajectory (soil C, N, NO3, fungal hyphae) or a steady incremental increase (NH4) or decrease (microbial biomass). This article aims to analyze the behavior of the language in use by observing spelling errors resulting from the graphic recording of vowel raising in essays by university students. According to the process of acquiring writing and learning in different contexts, we understand that some hypotheses about how writing works, supported by speech, accompany students during the school period. The analysis is based on Cagliari (2002), Abaurre (1991), Zorzi (2006), Silva (1991), Tenani (2010), Pereira (2011) and Bortoni-Ricardo (2005). For data collection, 116 essays written by university entrance students from a public university were investigated. The skewness of the roughness height distribution is one of the key topographical parameters that govern roughness effects on wall-bounded turbulence. In this paper mathematical bounds for realisable values of skewness and kurtosis are discussed in the context of irregular multi-scale rough surfaces, which are representative of typical forms of engineering roughness. The properties of a set of irregular rough surfaces fully covered by roughness features with very high positive and negative skewness and high kurtosis are investigated using direct numerical simulations of turbulent channel flow at Re τ = 395. While an increase of the roughness function is observed at moderate skewness values in line with empirical predictions and previous results for moderately skewed surfaces, the roughness function saturates at extreme values of skewness. Overall, the roughness effect is found to be more sensitive to skewness over the negative skewness range compared to the positive skewness range. Surface pressure statistics show that for surfaces with extreme skewness fully covered by roughness features extreme pits or peaks do not dominate the roughness effect and that surrounding roughness features ('background' roughness) retain a significant influence. This is because, while extreme roughness features emerge as skewness approaches high positive or negative values, they tend to be sparse decreasing their overall impact on the wall-bounded flow. Asthma exacerbations significantly impact millions of patients worldwide to pose large disease burdens on affected patients, families, and health-care systems. Although numerous environmental factors cause asthma exacerbations, viral respiratory infections are the principal triggers. Advances in the pathophysiology of asthma have elucidated dysregulated protective immune responses and upregulated inflammation that create susceptibility and risks for exacerbation. Biologics for the treatment of severe asthma reduce rates of exacerbations and identify specific pathways of inflammation that contribute to altered pathophysiology, novel therapeutic targets, and informative biomarkers. Major steps to prevent exacerbations include the identification of molecular pathways whose blockage will prevent asthma attacks safely, predictably, and effectively. Asthma affects 10% of the world's population but is a heterogeneous disease in terms of clinical manifestations and underlying molecular control of airway inflammation. In most asthma patients, a type 2 (T2) inflammatory pattern of inflammation drives clinical characteristics and susceptibility to exacerbations and forms the target for therapy. Asthma causes major health-care burdens for many patients and exacerbations are principal contributors to these disease burdens. The majority of asthma exacerbations are provoked by viral respiratory infections, with the common cold virus, rhinovirus (RV), the major infectious cause. RVs infect the airway epithelium to activate inflammation and increase the eosinophilic response to contribute to greater airflow obstruction and symptoms. Although inhaled corticosteroids are the primary treatment in asthma, they do not always prevent exacerbations in patients, particularly with severe disease. The development of monoclonal biologics directed towards components of T2 inflammation have begun to revolutionize the treatment of severe asthma and more effectively prevent exacerbations in asthma and reduce the need for systemic corticosteroids. Histopathology as a diagnostic mainstay for tissue evaluation is strictly a 2D technology. Combining and supplementing this technology with 3D imaging has been proposed as one future avenue towards refining comprehensive tissue analysis. To this end, we have developed a laboratory-based X-ray method allowing for the investigation of tissue samples in three dimensions with isotropic volume information. To assess the potential of our method for micro-morphology evaluation, we selected several kidney regions from three patients with cystic kidney disease, obstructive nephropathy and diabetic glomerulopathy. Tissue specimens were processed using our in-house-developed X-ray eosin stain and investigated with a commercial microCT and our in-house-built NanoCT. The microCT system provided overview scans with voxel sizes of $14.8~\mu \text{m}$ and the NanoCT was employed for higher resolutions including voxel sizes from $1.4~\mu \text{m}$ to 210 nm. We present a methodology allowing for a precise micro-morphologic investigation in three dimensions which is compatible with conventional histology. Advantages of our methodology are its versatility with respect to multi-scale investigations, being laboratory-based, allowing for non-destructive imaging and providing isotropic volume information. Conclusions reached in meta‐analyses of changes in insect communities may be influenced by method‐specific sampling biases, which may lead to inappropriate conservation measures.We argue that the contradictory conclusions regarding terrestrial insect biomass, abundance and richness patterns are, at least partly, due to methodological limitations that reflect taxon‐specific responses to environmental changes.In this study, light and Malaise traps were simultaneously deployed to sample insects at 52 plots in a temperate forest in Germany along gradients of elevation (>1000 m) and canopy openness (3%–100%). These gradients were used as predictors in models of total arthropod biomass according to the two trapping methods and in models of abundance and richness of three commonly targeted groups: nocturnal moths, sampled using light traps, and hoverflies and bees, collected with Malaise traps.A comparison of the total arthropod biomass obtained with the two methods revealed contrary results along the canopy openness gradient. Biomass in light traps showed a decreasing trend with increasing canopy openness while biomass in Malaise traps increased. The same opposing pattern was found for the abundance of selected taxa.The different patterns describing spatial variation of arthropod communities obtained using light and Malaise traps can be explained by differences in the taxa predominantly collected. Regarding the ongoing debate on insect decline, our results demonstrate that comparing different taxa from different taxon‐specific traps is inappropriate. Material ablation and evaporation using pulsed infrared lasers pose promising approaches for matrix-free laser desorption ionization and in laser surgery. For the best results, key parameters such as laser wavelength, pulse duration, and pulse energy need to be carefully adjusted to the application. We characterize the dynamics at the water-air interface induced by a 10 ps infrared laser tuned to the water absorption band at 3 μ m , a parameter set facilitating stress confined desorption for typical absorption depths in biological samples and tissue. By driving the ablation faster than nucleation growth, cavitation induced sample damage during the ablation process can be mitigated. The resultant explosive ablation process leads to a shock front expansion and material ejection which we capture using off-axis digital interference microscopy, an interference technique particularly useful for detecting the phase shift caused by transparent objects. It is demonstrated that the method can yield local density information of the observed shock front with a single image acquisition as compared to the usually performed fit of the velocity extracted from several consecutive snapshots. We determine the ablation threshold to be (0.5 ± 0.2) J cm − 2 and observe a significant distortion of the central parts of the primary shock wave above approximately 2.5 J cm − 2 . Importance: Chronic, non-cancer pain affects approximately 20-30% of the population in North America, Europe, and Australia, with surgery and trauma frequently cited as inciting events. Prospective studies of fracture patients have demonstrated an association between somatic pre-occupation, poor coping, and low recovery expectations following surgery with persistent pain, functional limitations, and lower rates of return to work. Psychological interventions, such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), that are designed to modify unhelpful beliefs and behaviours have the potential to reduce persistent post-surgical pain and its associated effects among trauma patients.Objective: To determine whether online CBT, versus usual care, reduces the prevalence of moderate to severe persistent post-surgical pain among participants with an open or closed fracture of the appendicular skeleton.Design, Setting, and Participants: The Cognitive Behavioural Therapy to Optimize Post-Operative Fracture Recovery (COPE) protocol will be followed to conduct a multi-centre randomized controlled trial. Participants undergoing surgical repair of a long bone fracture will be randomized to receive either (1) online CBT modules with asynchronous therapist feedback or (2) usual care. The primary outcome will be the prevalence of moderate to severe persistent post-surgical pain over 12 months post-fracture. Secondary outcomes include the Short Form-36 Physical and Mental Component Summary scores, return to function, pain severity and pain interference over 12 months post-fracture, and the proportion of patients prescribed opioid class medications (and average dose) at 6 and 12 months post-fracture. The article describes the development of study counseling for refugee prospective students at Leibniz University Hannover since 2015. In particular, it addresses the concerns of those seeking advice, changes in the legal framework, and the influence of financial opportunities. Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine in February 2022, according to the UN, 7.7 million people have fled Ukraine, including 34,000 so-called "third-country nationals". A major challenge for authorities was the implementation of the Mass Influx Directive § 24, which allows temporary protection for war refugees in EU countries. There are financial savings and the elimination of projects for the integration of refugees at universities. The book "Higher Education: Science and Practice" argues for thinking about administration from the perspective of scientists and the nature of science, and resisting the adverse effects of control through indicators. Simple Summary: Fallopia baldschuanica (Polygonaceae) is an Asian plant growing wild in parts of Europe and North and Central America as an introduced taxon. Although F. baldschuanica is considered a potentially invasive alien plant species, little is known about its pollination biology in climatic conditions in Europe. In this study, we identified the volatile organic compounds emitted from F. baldschuanica flowers, from which some are important insect attractants. We also described the pollinator populations of this plant. We confirm that the chemical composition of floral aroma in F. baldschuanica attracts a large group of potential pollinators, which in addition to the intensive growth of the plant is a feature enabling the species to rapidly expand. This article presents the list of 18 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by the flowers of F. baldchuanica and identified by headspace gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (HS-GC/MS) analyzes, and a list of flower-visiting and pollinating insects that have been observed in the city center of Wrocław (SW Poland). β-ocimene, heptanal, nonanal, α-pinene, 3-thujene, and limonene, were detected as the floral scent's most important aroma compounds. F. baldschuanica also produces the aphid alarm pheromones, i.e., β-farnesene and limonene, that repels aphids. Additionally, the pollinators of F. baldschuanica were indicated, based on two years of observations in five sites in the urban area. It was found, that the pollinators of this plant with the highest species stability are: Diptera from families Syrphidae (Chrysotoxum bicinctum, Eristalis pertinax, Eupeodes corollae, Episyrphus balteatus, Eristalis tenax, Syrphus ribesii, Eristalis intricaria), Muscidae (Musca domestica), Sarcophagidae (Sarcophaga spp.), Calliphoridae (Lucilia sericata, Lucilia caesar), Hymenoptera from families Vespidae (Vespula vulgaris), and Apidae (Apis sp., Bombus sp.). Viruses are key players in the environment, and recent metagenomic studies have revealed their diversity and genetic complexity. Despite progress in understanding the ecology of viruses in extreme environments, viruses' dynamics and functional roles in dryland ecosystems, which cover about 45% of the Earth's land surfaces, remain largely unexplored. This study characterizes virus sequences in the metagenomes of endolithic (within rock) microbial communities ubiquitously found in hyper-arid deserts. Taxonomic classification and network construction revealed the presence of novel and diverse viruses in communities inhabiting calcite, gypsum, and ignimbrite rocks. Viral genome maps show a high level of protein diversity within and across endolithic communities and the presence of virus-encoded auxiliary metabolic genes. Phage-host relationships were predicted by matching tRNA, CRISPR spacer, and protein sequences in the viral and microbial metagenomes. Primary producers and heterotrophic bacteria were found to be putative hosts to some viruses. Intriguingly, viral diversity was not correlated with microbial diversity across rock substrates. Aim: Whether or not use of intravenous alteplase in combination with endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) improves outcomes versus EVT alone, for acute stroke patients with large vessel occlusion presenting directly to a comprehensive stroke center, is uncertain. Methods: Six randomized trials exploring this issue were published, and we synthesized this evidence to inform a rapid guideline based on the Guidelines International Network principles and guided by the GRADE approach. Results: We enlisted an international panel that included 4 patient partners and 1 caregiver, individuals from 6 countries. The panel considered low certainty evidence that EVT alone, relative to EVT with intravenous alteplase, possibly results in a small decrease in the proportion of patients that achieve functional independence and possibly a small increase in mortality. Both effect estimates were downgraded twice due to very serious imprecision. The panel also considered moderate certainty evidence that EVT alone probably decreases symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage, versus EVT with alteplase, and combination therapy was more costly than EVT alone. As a result of the low certainty for improved recovery without impairment and mortality for combination therapy versus EVT alone, and moderate certainty for increased harm with combination therapy, the panel made a weak recommendation in favor of EVT alone for stroke patients eligible for both treatments, and initially presenting directly to a comprehensive stroke center that provides both treatments. Conclusions: Consistent with this weak recommendation, optimal patient management will likely often include co‐treatment with intravenous alteplase, depending on local circumstances and patient presentation. B cells and in particular IL-10-secreting B cells emerge as important players in immune balance during pregnancy. We have recently revealed that CD19-deficient (CD19−/−), B cell-specific IL-10-deficient (BIL-10−/−) and B cell-deficient µMT pregnant mice are highly susceptible to LPS-induced preterm birth (PTB). We aimed to analyze the ability of IL-10-secreting cells to protect from PTB and the underlying mechanisms. Wild type (WT), CD19−/−, BIL-10−/− and µMT mice were treated with LPS at gd16 and the cellular immune response was investigated 24 h later. LPS-treated BIL-10−/− dams showed a more pronounced PTB phenotype compared to WT, CD19−/− and µMT females, and increased inflammatory and reduced anti-inflammatory mediator concentrations in the peritoneal cavity and serum. CD19−/−, BIL-10−/− and µMT mice displayed altered immune cell population frequencies in the blood and uterus with lower numbers of IL-10-secreting B cells and T cells. BIL-10−/− mothers presented decreased frequencies of uterine CD4+CD25+Foxp3+ Treg cells. Co-stimulatory molecules are critical for feto-maternal tolerance and IL-10 secretion. We found dysregulated PD-1 expression in peripheral blood and ICOS expression in the uterus of CD19−/−, BIL-10−/− and µMT dams. Our data show that B cell-specific IL-10-signaling is essential for a balanced maternal immune response to an inflammatory stimulant that cannot be hampered without IL-10-secreting B cells. Open‐air marketplaces are vital to food security, livelihoods, and the national economy in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Over the past 60 years, rapid growth of urban populations, changes in global commodity prices, and the decline in value of the PNG currency have stimulated demand for domestic fresh food. Selling fresh food in marketplaces has also become an attractive way to earn money for rural producers, whose returns on labour on their export crops have declined, and for urban residents struggling to make a living. This in turn has led to significant changes in PNGʼs marketplaces: spatial and temporal changes, changes in what is bought and sold, changes in who is selling, and changes in how food is transacted. In this paper, we bring together research on PNGʼs marketplaces from between 1961 and 2022 to document these changes and their causes, alongside important continuities, and to examine the implications and substantial gaps in our knowledge. Although X‐ray contrast agents offer specific characteristics in terms of targeting and attenuation, their accumulation in the tissue on a cellular level is usually not known and difficult to access, as it requires high resolution and sensitivity. Here, quantitative near‐field ptychographic X‐ray computed tomography is demonstrated to assess the location of X‐ray stains at a resolution sufficient to identify intracellular structures by means of a basis material decomposition. On the example of two different X‐ray stains, the nonspecific iodine potassium iodide, and eosin Y, which mostly interacts with proteins and peptides in the cell cytoplasm, the distribution of the stains within the cells in murine kidney samples is assessed and compared to unstained samples with similar structural features. Quantitative nanoscopic stain concentrations are in good agreement with dual‐energy micro computed tomography measurements, the state‐of‐the‐art modality for material‐selective imaging. Optimal athletic performance requires meeting the energetic demands of the muscle fibers, which are a function of myosin ATPase enzymatic activity. Skeletal muscle with a predominant oxidative metabolism underlies equine athletic success. Sodium butyrate, a short-chain fatty acid, can affect muscle fiber composition in pigs. To determine if a similar scenario exists in horses, 12 adult Thoroughbred geldings (7.4 ± 0.6 yr of age; mean ± SEM) were fed 16 g of calcium butyrate (CB) or an equivalent amount of carrier (CON) daily for 30 d in a crossover design. Middle gluteal muscle biopsies were collected before and after the feeding trial for immunohistochemical determination of fiber type, and RNA and protein isolation. After 30 d, CB increased (P < 0.05) the percentage of type IIA fibers and tended (P = 0.13) to reduce the numbers of type IIX fibers in comparison to control (CON). No changes (P > 0.05) in type I, IIA, or IIX fiber size were observed in response to CB. No differences (P > 0.05) were noted in the abundance of succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) protein or activity between horses receiving CB or CON. Myogenin mRNA abundance was unaffected (P > 0.05) by 30 d of CB supplementation. The increase in type IIA fibers in the absence of altered mitochondrial SDH enzymatic activity suggests that CB affects myosin ATPase expression independent of altered metabolism. Background: Although it is known that the nutritional status among elderly persons and, in particular, patients with dementia, is compromised, malnutrition that results in insufficient uptake of several vitamins is often not diagnosed.Objective: An elevated homocysteine level is a known strong risk factor for vascular dementia (VaD) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). Several B vitamins are involved in the metabolism of homocysteine. Therefore, we investigated the serum levels of vitamin B1, vitamin B6, folate, and vitamin B12 in 97 patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or different forms of dementia and 54 elderly control persons without dementia.Results: Compared to aged non-demented people, vitamins B1, B6, B12, and folate were decreased in serum of patients with AD, and patients with Lewy body dementia had reduced vitamin B12 level. Vitamin B6 was diminished in VaD. Patients with frontotemporal dementia showed no alterations in vitamin levels. Age was identified as an important factor contributing to the concentrations of vitamin B1 and B6 in serum, but not vitamin B12 and folate. Increased levels of total homocysteine were detected especially in MCI and AD. Homocysteine correlated negatively with levels of vitamins B6, B12, and folate and positively with Q Albumin.Conclusion: Our data suggest that despite increased homocysteine already present in MCI, vitamin levels are decreased only in dementia. We propose to determine the vitamin levels in patients with cognitive decline, but also elderly people in general, and recommend supplementing these nutrients if needed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
