Our case study of Saw IV examines the possibility of using horror as a genre, a vehicle for teaching ethics, and its use in street-level bureaucrat (SLB) decision-making. Specifically, this film highlights the inherent violence of the police state, which illuminates the limits of ethical decision-making in constrained contexts. We propose using horror as a film genre to teach students about the complexity of personal, interpersonal, and professional ethics, bureaucratic discretion, and the impact of these decisions in real-world situations. We provide a brief analysis of the film through the lens of ethical dilemmas in a violent police state and the impact of this violence on governance. The precarity of journalistic labour has received significant scholarly attention globally, leading to a plethora of studies that attempt to theorise changing journalistic roles, practices, and norms. Whereas precarity in newswork is formulated as the "new normal" in the Global North, the precarious situation of marginal(ised) newsworkers in the Global South has been simply normal. Based on ethnographic research in two small-town formations in South India, this article presents how stringers working in Indian-language newspapers have developed a complex professional identity and shared norms through journalistic and extra-journalistic practices to survive in the field. In doing so, we develop, in a novel way, Bourdieu's concept of illusio to understand the formation of a professional identity that spans adjacent fields. This paper's critical engagement with the difficult working lives of stringers and their invisible labour has learnings for analysis of precarity in journalism across the Global North and South. AbstractThis article makes use of discussions on the UK parenting site Mumsnet during the first COVID-19 lockdown in the UK between March and May 2020 to investigate the ways in which users wrote about liminal sites such as front porches, windows, and front and back doors. We argue that such spaces played a number of different roles for families during lockdown: as containment zones, barriers, safe spaces of interaction, and places of performance and surveillance. These spaces bridged public and private life during lockdown by providing a perspective of the world from within the boundaries of the lockdown home. Such spaces could be perceived as both safe and unsafe – places of relocation and dislocation within which movement between the two worlds occurred and containment and disinfection strategies were performed. We also suggest that Mumsnet itself can be considered a virtual liminal space for its users, where they were able to safely access the public sphere from the comparative safety of their own homes during the pandemic and form a community with like-minded others. We thus position Mumsnet as: a liminal space in its own right, which afforded a safe place for users to be themselves, share anxieties and advice, and find friendship and companionship; a virtual third space for the discussion of politics and news; and, on occasion, a subaltern counter-public where women could formulate and circulate alternative interpretations of events counter to the frames of the mainstream media. Myocardial necrosis following the successful reperfusion of a coronary artery occluded by thrombus in a patient presenting with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) continues to be a serious problem, despite the multiple attempts to attenuate the necrosis with agents that have shown promise in pre-clinical investigations. Possible reasons include confounding clinical risk factors, the delayed application of protective agents, poorly designed pre-clinical investigations, the possible effects of routinely administered agents that might unknowingly already have protected the myocardium or that might have blocked protection, and the biological differences of the myocardium in humans and experimental animals. A better understanding of the pathobiology of myocardial infarction is needed to stem this reperfusion injury. P2Y12 receptor antagonists minimize platelet aggregation and are currently part of the standard treatment to prevent thrombus formation and propagation in STEMI protocols. Serendipitously, these P2Y12 antagonists also dramatically attenuate reperfusion injury in experimental animals and are presumed to provide a similar protection in STEMI patients. However, additional protective agents are needed to further diminish reperfusion injury. It is possible to achieve additive protection if the added intervention protects by a mechanism different from that of P2Y12 antagonists. Inflammation is now recognized to be a critical factor in the complex intracellular response to ischemia and reperfusion that leads to tissue necrosis. Interference with cardiomyocyte inflammasome assembly and activation has shown great promise in attenuating reperfusion injury in pre-clinical animal models. And the blockade of the executioner protease caspase-1, indeed, supplements the protection already seen after the administration of P2Y12 antagonists. Importantly, protective interventions must be applied in the first minutes of reperfusion, if protection is to be achieved. Introduction: Substance use is common among youth which can adversely affect youth health. Despite the legalization of cannabis in Canada and much of the United States, there is a lack of harm reduction cannabis education in schools. In addition, educators may not feel prepared to teach students about cannabis. Methods: A cross-sectional survey explored educator perceptions toward teaching harm reduction substance use education to students in grades 4–12. Data analysis included descriptive statistics to evaluate demographic variables, ANOVAs to identify subgroup differences, and inductive thematic analysis to establish themes from open-ended responses. From the sample of 170 educators, the majority were female (77%) and worked as classroom teachers (59%). Results: Ninety-two percent of educators felt harm reduction was an effective approach to substance use education, and 84% stated that they would feel comfortable teaching cannabis harm reduction education to students. While 68% of educators believed they would be able to recognize if a student was under the influence of cannabis, only 39% felt certain about how to respond to student cannabis use, and just 8% felt that their current teacher training allowed them to intervene and prevent cannabis-related harms. Most educators (89%) expressed interest in harm reduction training, particularly interactive training (70%) and instructor-led lessons (51%). Online curriculum resources were preferred by 57%. Responses differed by gender and age group, with females of any age and educators under 40 reporting greater support of harm reduction approaches and more interest in training. Conclusion: Educators expressed considerable support for harm reduction substance use education, but many felt unprepared to address this topic with students. The findings identified a need for educator training on harm reduction substance use education, so that educators can help students make informed choices around substance use, thereby promoting youth health and safety. Context: Hospitalized patients who experience unplanned intensive care unit (ICU) admissions face significant challenges, and their family members have unique palliative care needs. Objectives: To identify predictors of palliative care consultation among hospitalized patients with unplanned ICU admissions and to examine the association between palliative care consultation and family outcomes. Methods: We conducted a prospective cohort study of patients with unplanned ICU admissions at two medical centers in Seattle, WA. This study was approved by the institutional review board at the University of Washington (STUDY00008182). Using multivariable logistic regression, we examined associations between patient characteristics and palliative care consultation. Family members completed surveys assessing psychological distress within 90 days of patient discharge. Adjusted ordinal probit or binary logistic regression models were used to identify associations between palliative care consultation and family symptoms of psychological distress. Results: In our cohort (n = 413 patients and 272 family members), palliative care was consulted for 24% of patients during hospitalization (n = 100), with the majority (93%) of these consultations occurring after ICU admission. Factors associated with palliative care consultation after ICU transfer included enrollment site (OR, 2.29; 95% CI: 1.17–4.50), Sequential Organ Failure Assessment score at ICU admission (OR, 1.12; 95% CI: 1.05–1.19), and reason for hospital admission (kidney dysfunction [OR, 7.02; 95% CI: 1.08–45.69]). There was no significant difference in family symptoms of depression or posttraumatic stress based on palliative care consultation status. Conclusions: For patients experiencing unplanned ICU admission, palliative care consultation often happened after transfer and was associated with illness severity, comorbid illness, and hospital site. Understanding environmental change is challenging and requires molecular‐level tools to explain the physicochemical phenomena behind complex processes. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is a key tool that provides information on both molecular structures and interactions but is underutilized in environmental research because standard "high‐field" NMR is financially and physically inaccessible for many and can be overwhelming to those outside of disciplines that routinely use NMR. "Low‐field" NMR is an accessible alternative but has reduced sensitivity and increased spectral overlap, which is especially problematic for natural, heterogeneous samples. Therefore, the goal of this study is to investigate and apply innovative experiments that could minimize these challenges and improve low‐field NMR analysis of environmental and biological samples. Spectral simplification (JRES, PSYCHE, singlet‐only, multiple quantum filters), selective detection (GEMSTONE, DREAMTIME), and heteronuclear (reverse and CH3/CH2/CH‐only HSQCs) NMR experiments are tested on samples of increasing complexity (amino acids, spruce resin, and intact water fleas) at‐high field (500 MHz) and at low‐field (80 MHz). A novel experiment called Doubly Selective HSQC is also introduced, wherein 1H signals are selectively detected based on the 1H and 13C chemical shifts of 1H–13C J‐coupled pairs. The most promising approaches identified are the selective techniques (namely for monitoring), and the reverse and CH3‐only HSQCs. Findings ultimately demonstrate that low‐field NMR holds great potential for biological and environmental research. The multitude of NMR experiments available makes NMR tailorable to nearly any research need, and low‐field NMR is therefore anticipated to become a valuable and widely used analytical tool moving forward. As Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems become increasingly embedded in our daily lives, it is of utmost importance to ensure that they are both fair and reliable. Regrettably, this is not always the case for predictive policing systems, as evidence shows biases based on age, race, and sex, leading to wrongful identifications of individuals as potential criminals. Given the existing criticism of the system's unjust treatment of minority groups, it becomes essential to address and mitigate this concerning trend. This study delved into the infusion of domain knowledge in the predictive policing system, aiming to minimize prevailing fairness issues. The experimental results indicate a considerable increase in fairness across all metrics for all protected classes, thus fostering greater trust in the predictive policing system by reducing the unfair treatment of individuals. Alternative grading methods, such as standards-based grading, provide students multiple opportunities to demonstrate their understanding of the learning outcomes in a course. These grading methods allow for more flexibility and help promote a growth mindset by embracing constructive failure for students. Implementation of these alternative grading methods requires developing specific, transparent, and assessable standards. Moving away from traditional methods also requires a mindset shift for how both students and instructors approach assessment. While providing multiple opportunities is important for learning in any course, these methods are particularly relevant to an upper level mathematical statistics course where topics covered often provide an additional challenge for students as they lie at the intersection of both theory and application. By providing multiple opportunities, students have the space for constructive failure as they tackle learning both a conceptual understanding of statistics and the supporting mathematical theory. Objectives: To provide guidance in the form of consensus statement in the management of ketamine uropathy. Methods: A literature review of ketamine uropathy was performed. The consensus method was of a modified nominal group technique and has been use in the previous British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS) consensus documents and was led by the Female, Neurological and Urodynamic Urology Section of the BAUS. Results: A number of consensus statements detailing the assessment and management of urological complications relate to the recreational use of ketamine (ketamine uropathy) in both elective and emergency urology settings. Background: Clinical trials using psilocybin therapy to treat anorexia nervosa (AN) are currently underway. The safety and tolerability of psilocybin is of utmost importance in individuals with AN who may present unique medical vulnerabilities. The purpose of this review is to describe how the common physiologic adverse effects of psilocybin may impact medical complications experienced by individuals with AN in clinical trials of psilocybin therapy. Main body: The physiologic underpinnings of common adverse effects following psilocybin administration are described, including tachycardia, hypertension, electrocardiogram changes, nausea, headache, and lightheadedness. These anticipated physiologic changes are described in relation to the common medical correlates seen in individuals with AN. Risk mitigation strategies for each adverse effect are proposed. Conclusion: Early evidence suggests that psilocybin therapy is well-tolerated in individuals with AN. Understanding the unique medical complications of AN, and how they may be impacted by common physiologic adverse effects of psilocybin administration, leads to tailored risk mitigation strategies to enhance safety and tolerability of this novel intervention. In the U.S., evidence has emerged suggesting that divorce is lower among those with many versus few siblings, a pattern that may indicate that children develop important social skills via their childhood interactions with siblings. However, this pattern has yet to be tested in other countries with varying fertility and divorce rates. We extend the empirical basis of the sibship size/divorce literature by exploring the association in China and Europe, each with unique demographic characteristics. Each additional sibling is associated with an 11 percent decline in the probability of divorce in China and a two percent decline in Europe, net a wide range of covariates. We also test whether these patterns vary across cohorts and alternative coding schemes. The results have implications for our understanding of how growing up with siblings influences later life outcomes and the contextual features that form that relationship. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The recent clearance by the United States Food and Drug Administration of Tidepool Loop sets an important precedent within the medical device landscape. For the first time, an automated insulin delivery mobile application—based on an algorithm initially designed and developed by users —has been recognised as safe and effective by a regulatory body. The aim of this paper is twofold: firstly, we map out the regulatory pathways and processes that were navigated by Tidepool, the non‐profit behind Tidepool Loop, in order to make this landmark moment possible. Secondly, we set out potential approvals processes in the European Union and United Kingdom with a view to examining the challenges to obtaining regulatory clearance for Tidepool Loop in these jurisdictions. In so doing, we highlight the significant differences, not only between the United States and European systems but also between the European Union and Great Britain systems. We conclude by arguing that the complexity encountered when seeking to introduce an innovative solution in different regulatory systems has the potential to act as a disincentive to open source developers from seeking regulatory approvals for such technologies in the future. We evaluate communication policies related to COVID-19 adopted by governors in the United States and explore how communication and policy directives are impacted by hyper-polarised situations, namely the presence of a divided government. This work sheds light on the challenges of crisis communication and executive leadership. Using a combination of robust regression and text and sentiment analyses, we compare the timing of and the language used by governors who imposed state-wide facemask mandates in 2020. We find that racially diverse states with Democratic governors acted more quickly than states with comparably older populations, had more people living in one household, and without health insurance. Further, we find that Democratic governors were slower to act when their decision could be checked by a Republican legislature highlighting the restrictive nature that executives face in crises. Purpose: Emergency laparotomy is associated with high morbidity for the surgical patient. Understanding patients' health-related quality of life after their surgery is important to enhance the informed consent process, and to enable the evaluation and improvement of surgical care. This review aims to summarise the use of health-related quality of life tools in clinical trials involving patients undergoing emergency laparotomy. Methods: A systematic review was undertaken of the scientific literature published in the MEDLINE® and PubMed databases between January 2011 and July 2021. A narrative synthesis approach was chosen to synthesise the diverse range of studies in a structured manner. All included papers were evaluated using the Cochrane Collaboration's tool for assessing risk of bias. Results: Eleven studies were selected for inclusion. Most of the studies had a low risk of bias. Two of the studies used health-related quality of life as the primary outcome measure. A variety of health-related quality of life measurement tools were used; the EQ-5D tool was the most popular questionnaire. Protocol adherence was dependent on the length of time which had elapsed after emergency surgery. Conclusion: There are many perceived challenges to collecting health-related quality of life data in the emergency surgery setting. Many of these can be offset with progressive trial designs. Beginning in 2011, public scandals and high‐visibility critiques of research methods in psychology fed a broader "replication crisis": foundational experiments could not be replicated, and statistical methods in social psychology demonstrated vulnerability to fraud and manipulation. Even well‐intended researchers following accepted psychological protocols—zombie methodologies—could unintentionally produce false positives. In response, social psychologists have called for greater sensitivity to cultural diversity, a deeper consideration of social context, and more methodological reflection. The contrast with anthropology is dramatic, highlighting some of the strengths of our field: methodological versatility, appreciation of human variability, theoretical creativity, and a solid foundation for synthetic, interdisciplinary collaboration grounded in our tradition of holism. Purpose: Binge‐eating disorder (BED) in adolescents and young adults is underrecognized and understudied and no standardized guidelines exist for medical providers caring for this population. To highlight the lack of extant evidence, we examine the demographic characteristics of youth with BED in an academic eating disorders (EDs) program and primary care clinic and describe the needs of their medical care providers. Method: A retrospective chart review was conducted for patients who met criteria for BED from July 2021 to June 2022. We surveyed their medical providers to understand their needs in caring for this population. A multidisciplinary team with expertise in the care of youth with EDs amalgamated current evidence in caring for youth with BED into a protocolized care schema designed for implementation in the outpatient medical setting. Results: Eighteen youth with BED were reviewed, 14 identified as female, 3 as male, and 1 as "Other." Average age was 15.4 (2.7) years old, and mean body mass index was 35.90 (8.25). 33.3% (6) patients identified as White/Caucasian, followed by 22.2% (4) Hispanic/Latinx. Eleven of 18 were privately insured. The most common medical recommendations were for regular meals and snacks and for individual psychotherapy. Medical providers desired more education about identification and management of youth with BED. Conclusions: To address the lack of medical care guidelines for youth with BED, recommendations in this Forum include: increased education for medical providers, standardized medical monitoring, an emphasis on psychotherapy, and a weight‐inclusive orientation. Public Significance: Adolescents and young adults with BED are underrecognized and undertreated. Little is known about the characteristics of these patients and the medical care these patients receive within academic EDs program. Police workforce management has persisted as a major organizational concern. Numerous compelling historical and organizational factors have contributed to smaller numbers of qualified or even interested applicants for police agencies to choose from, and disrupted police career longevity and even police services overall. To address their staffing needs, a growing number of organizations have increasingly shifted their focus to recruiting existing sworn and experienced officers from other departments. While there is increasing concern about officers transferring across organizations, little research has examined officer intentions to move laterally within the police profession, why officers choose to stay or leave, and the implications for staffing. Using theories of cross-organizational turnover from career psychology and a robust sample of more than 600 officers from 8 police agencies, this paper explores the impact of compensation, organizational values, perceptions of supervisors, and career advancement opportunities on officers' intentions to pursue lateral transfers. Results indicated that compensation had limited influence on intentions to leave and that organizational characteristics exhibited much stronger relationships. Suggestions for keeping officers and assisting recruits in finding their potential organizational fit, impressions of the trajectory of this trend, and implications for theory and practice are offered. This article discusses the potential use of the horror film Saw IV as a teaching tool for exploring ethical decision-making in public administration. The film follows a police officer named Lieutenant Rigg who is tested by the Jigsaw killer. The article suggests that the extreme violence depicted in the film can provide a context for examining ethical dilemmas in a violent system. It also proposes the use of reflection writing activities to prompt students to analyze the ethical frameworks used by the characters in the film. However, the article acknowledges that the violent content of the film may be triggering for some students and suggests using short clips and focusing on the decision-making process instead. Driving is a critical everyday task necessitating the rapid and seamless integration of dynamic visually derived information to guide neurobehaviour. Biological markers are frequently employed to detect Δ9‐tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) consumption among drivers during roadside tests, despite not necessarily indicating impairment. Characterising THC‐specific alterations to oculomotor behaviour may offer a more sensitive measure for indexing drug‐related impairment, necessitating discrimination between acute THC effects, chronic use and potential tolerance effects. The present review aims to synthesise current evidence on the acute and chronic effects of THC on driving‐relevant oculomotor behaviour. The review was prospectively registered (10.17605/OSF.IO/A4H9W), and Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines informed reporting standards. Overall, 20 included articles comprising 12 experimental acute dosing trials, 5 cross‐sectional chronic use studies and 3 roadside epidemiological studies examined the effects of cannabis/THC on oculomotor parameters including saccadic activity gaze behaviour, nystagmus, smooth pursuit and eyelid/blink characteristics. Acute THC consumption selectively impacts oculomotor control, notably increasing saccadic latency and inaccuracy and impairing inhibitory control. Chronic cannabis users, especially those with early age of use onset, display enduring oculomotor deficits that affect visual scanning efficiency. The presence of eyelid tremors appears to be a reliable indicator of cannabis consumption while remaining distinct from direct impairment associated with visual attention and motor control. Cannabis selectively influences oculomotor activity relevant to driving, highlighting the role of cannabinoid systems in these processes. Defining cannabis/THC‐specific changes in oculomotor control may enhance the precision of roadside impairment assessments and vehicle safety systems to detect drug‐related impairment and assess driving fitness. Sleep problems, depression, and anxiety are highly prevalent after a spinal cord injury (SCI) and traumatic brain injury (TBI) and may worsen functional outcomes and quality of life. This scoping review examined the existing literature to understand the relationships between sleep quality, depression, and anxiety in persons with SCI and TBI, and to identify gaps in the literature. A systematic search of seven databases was conducted. The findings of 30 eligible studies reporting associations between sleep quality and depression and/or anxiety after SCI or TBI were synthesized. The included studies were mostly cross-sectional and employed a range of subjective and objective measures of sleep quality. Poor subjective sleep quality and insomnia tended to be significantly associated with increased levels of depression and/or anxiety, but no such associations were reported when sleep quality was measured objectively. Two longitudinal studies observed worsening depressive symptoms over time were related to insomnia and persistent sleep complaints. Two interventional studies found that treating sleep problems improved symptoms of depression and anxiety. The findings of this review suggest that sleep and psychopathology are related in persons with neurotraumatic injuries. This has important therapeutic implications, because individuals may benefit from therapy targeting both sleep and psychological issues. The experience of patient suicide on clinicians is associated with complex affective states that include grief, guilt, shame, and fear and distressing subjective experiences of incompetence and helplessness. In the aftermath of Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, which overturned the federal constitutional right to abortion, states have begun to recriminalize the procedure. These abortion bans raise important questions about the political and social status of women and pregnant people in the United States. Moreover, restrictions in social welfare programs such as the Special Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program for Women, Infants, and Children and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, which serve low-income pregnant people and parents, raise similar questions. The regulation and administration of all three are framed by race, class, and gender. To understand how these restrictions (a) claim to protect women but ultimately function to control, police, and surveil and (b) rely on imagined, stereotype-laden psychological states such as vulnerability, irresponsibility, or irrationality, we turn to the British Common Law doctrine of coverture, which subsumed a married woman's legal, financial, and political identities under her husband's. The American colonies, and later, states of the United States, drew from British Common Law to craft laws that regulated relationships between men and women. Taken together, this analysis can provide a more comprehensive accounting of the cumulative harms experienced by women, poor people, people of color, and pregnant people in today's health and social welfare landscape. We conclude with recommendations for psychologists and other mental health providers to address, in practice and advocacy, the ethical dilemmas and obligations raised by the reach of coverture's logics in people's lives. Limit feeding is a practice that is used to improve feed efficiency and control growth in dairy heifers, but also has negative consequences associated with hunger and restriction of feeding behavior. One such consequence could be intersucking (i.e., the licking or sucking of another animal's teats or udder). This behavior is reported to varying degrees in heifers, and thus, our first objective was to evaluate whether intersucking increased in response to short-term (48 h) feed restriction. Intersucking interventions, such as nose rings, are often applied to specific animals, and so our second objective was to describe intersucking performance in individual heifers, including those that represent outliers in this population. We studied 42 heifers (9 Jerseys, 33 Holsteins) aged 12.8 ± 1.1 mo (mean ± SD). They were housed in 21 pairs, the experimental unit for our first objective. We used a switchback design with 3 periods of 2 d each where heifers were fed ad libitum total mixed ration in the first and third periods (Baseline and Return, respectively), and limit fed to 50% of ad libitum intake in the second period (Restriction). We scored time spent intersucking continuously and eating at 5-min intervals from video recordings from 0800 to 2000 h on 4 d (baseline d 2, restriction d 2, return d 1, and return d 2). Heifer pairs spent less time eating (16 ± 0.4% mean percentage of 12-h observations ± SE), more time intersucking (27 ± 7 s/12 h), and engaged in longer bouts of intersucking (23 ± 5 s/bout) on Restriction d 2 compared with all other days (eating: 34.7 ± 1.1%, 44.2 ± 0.9%, 35.8 ± 1.1% of 12-h; intersucking time: 7 ± 2, 7 ± 3, 10 ± 5 s/12 h; intersucking bout length: 3 ± 1, 2 ± 1, 3 ± 1 s/bout; Baseline d 2, Return d 1, Return d 2, respectively). There was no difference in the number of bouts of intersucking across days (1.3 ± 0.2 bouts/12 h). The drop in eating during feed restriction was followed by a rebound on Return d 1 before returning to baseline levels. Time spent intersucking did not differ among ad libitum periods. Overall, 90% of the heifers performed intersucking on at least 1 of the 4 d, and did this for 1 to 127 s/12 h (range) in 1 to 13 bouts/12 h. Of the heifers that intersucked, 55% did this at extreme levels relative to the rest of the experimental population (outliers). Holsteins and Jerseys, the 2 most prominent dairy breeds in the United States, differ in many regards. They have not been evaluated for differences in oral behavior performance, despite anecdotal evidence that Jerseys perform more abnormal behaviors than Holsteins. As abnormal behaviors can indicate compromised welfare, we evaluated whether breed differences existed in year-old heifers. Because many oral behaviors could be expressed in abnormal ways, we also sought to describe performance of a wide range of behaviors and whether these varied among individuals. We studied 42 pair-housed heifers (33 Holstein, 9 Jersey) at 12.8 ± 1.1 mo of age (mean ± SD) that were restricted to 50% of their ad libitum total mixed ration (TMR) intake for 2 d as part of a short-term feed challenge. Using continuous video recording from 0800 to 2000 h on the second day of feed restriction, we scored time spent performing tongue rolling, tongue flicking, self-grooming, allogrooming, intersucking, drinking urine, drinking water, and nonnutritive oral manipulation (NNOM) of rice hull bedding, the feed bin, or other pen fixtures. Eating TMR was recorded at 5-min intervals. We found that Jerseys spent more time tongue rolling (3.3% vs. 0.2% proportion of 12-h observations) and performing all types of NNOM than Holsteins (feed bin: 3.8% vs. 2.4%; bedding: 7.7% vs. 5.4%; other: 7.5% vs. 4.2%; total: 19.0% vs. 12.0%), and tended to spend more time tongue flicking (1.4% vs. 1.1%). Jerseys spent less time allogrooming than Holsteins (1.3% vs. 3.4%). There was no evidence of an effect of breed on self-grooming (2.0%), water drinking (1.0%), eating TMR (16.0%), or intersucking (0.06%). Urine drinking was performed by 9 total heifers and was not compared between breeds. All behaviors were highly variable across individuals, particularly tongue rolling and intersucking. Allogrooming was more variable than self-grooming, and each subcategory of NNOM was more variable than total NNOM. Outliers, or extreme performance of oral behaviors relative to the rest of our population, were present in most behaviors. Heifers who were outliers in one behavior were not consistently outliers in all. Overall, there are breed differences in many oral behaviors in a feed-restricted environment. Despite no difference in proportion of time spent eating, Jerseys often performed higher levels of potentially abnormal behaviors than Holsteins, though both breeds performed many oral behaviors, sometimes at extreme levels, that may indicate a concern. Objective: This study invited providers who care for patients with eating disorders to inform engagement, communication, and collaboration with psilocybin‐assisted psychotherapy interventions. Method: Medical and mental health providers who treat patients with eating disorders were recruited via professional referral networks and participant driven sampling from across California to participate in one of five focus groups. Discussion topics included prior knowledge of psychedelic therapy, interest/concerns related to psilocybin therapy, and opportunities for collaboration. Study team members completed iterative rounds of coding with a grounded theory approach. Results: A total of 32 participants reported a range of familiarity with psychedelics. Some raised concerns about the risks of administering psilocybin to malnourished patients and to those with psychological comorbidities. Despite these concerns, participants were hopeful to see psilocybin therapy as a treatment for patients with eating disorders. In anticipating challenges, providers had concerns about equity in access to care among publicly insured and non‐English speaking patients. They requested opportunities for continuing education about psilocybin therapy. Discussion: Our findings demonstrate provider interest in psilocybin therapy for the treatment of patients with eating disorders. As psilocybin therapy interventions are developed, providers caring for patients with eating disorders value collaboration to improve longitudinal patient outcomes. Public Significance: This study invited healthcare providers of patients with eating disorders to discuss their thoughts around the use of psilocybin‐assisted psychotherapy in this population. Background: Hearing loss predicts cognitive decline and falls risk. It has been argued that degraded hearing makes listening effortful, causing competition for higher-level cognitive resources needed for secondary cognitive or motor tasks. Therefore, executive function training has the potential to improve cognitive performance, in turn improving mobility, especially when older adults with hearing loss are engaged in effortful listening. Moreover, research using mobile neuroimaging and ecologically valid measures of cognition and mobility in this population is limited. The objective of this research is to examine the effect of at-home cognitive training on dual-task performance using laboratory and simulated real-world conditions in normal-hearing adults and older hearing aid users. We hypothesize that executive function training will lead to greater improvements in cognitive-motor dual-task performance compared to a wait-list control group. We also hypothesize that executive function training will lead to the largest dual-task improvements in older hearing aid users, followed by normal-hearing older adults, and then middle-aged adults. Methods: A multi-site (Concordia University and KITE-Toronto Rehabilitation Institute, University Health Network) single-blinded randomized controlled trial will be conducted whereby participants are randomized to either 12 weeks of at-home computerized executive function training or a wait-list control. Participants will consist of normal-hearing middle-aged adults (45–60 years old) and older adults (65–80 years old), as well as older hearing aid users (65–80 years old, ≥ 6 months hearing aid experience). Separate samples will undergo the same training protocol and the same pre- and post-evaluations of cognition, hearing, and mobility across sites. The primary dual-task outcome measures will involve either static balance (KITE site) or treadmill walking (Concordia site) with a secondary auditory-cognitive task. Dual-task performance will be assessed in an immersive virtual reality environment in KITE's StreetLab and brain activity will be measured using functional near infrared spectroscopy at Concordia's PERFORM Centre. Discussion: This research will establish the efficacy of an at-home cognitive training program on complex auditory and motor functioning under laboratory and simulated real-world conditions. This will contribute to rehabilitation strategies in order to mitigate or prevent physical and cognitive decline in older adults with hearing loss. Background: Training has been used to develop research skills among sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) researchers. Remote education may accelerate transfer of skills and reduce barriers to strengthening research capacity. This systematic review aimed to assess the effectiveness of remote training on SRHR research and describe enablers and barriers of effective remote training. Methods: PubMed, Embase, and Scielo were searched up to December 2022 for studies that evaluated in any language online research training programmes either on a SRHR topic or tailored for professionals working in SRHR published since 1990. Characteristics of included studies, the programmes they evaluated, the programme's effectiveness, and reported barriers and enablers to remote learning were extracted. Three researchers synthesized and described findings on effectiveness, impact and outcomes mapping them against the Kirkpatrick model. Additionally, thematic analysis from qualitative data was conducted to identify themes relating to the barriers and enablers of remote learning. Results: Of 1,510 articles retrieved, six studies that included 2,058 remote learners met the inclusion criteria. Five out of six studies described empirical improvements in participant research knowledge/skills and three studies reported improvements in attitudes/self-efficacy towards research. Follow-up surveys from four studies revealed frequent application of new research skills and improved opportunities for career advancement and publication following online trainings. Cited barriers to effective online SRHR research training included time management challenges and participants' competing professional obligations; limited opportunities for interaction; and lack of support from home institutions. Cited enablers included well-structured and clear courses, learning objectives and expectations with participants; ensuring a manageable workload; facilitating interactions with mentors and hands-on experience; and selecting programme topics relevant to participants' jobs. Conclusion: Remote SRHR training can lead to improvements in research knowledge, skills, and attitudes, particularly when course learning objectives, structure, and expectations are outlined clearly, and ongoing mentorship is provided. This conceptual article aims to inform social work educators on facilitating critical discourse among social work students by applying reproductive justice, leveraging interdisciplinary practice, and addressing the Social Work Grand Challenges. Reproductive justice tenets provide an interdisciplinary framework that assists in the development of the learning environment, participant's critical thinking, self-awareness, and self-regulation; preparing them for professional dialog and ethical decision making. This article will outline the tenets of reproductive justice, providing resources and tools for creating an environment that will assist in the facilitation of critical and professional conversations; while providing strategies that incorporate interdisciplinary partners into the classroom thus providing a reproductive justice sensitive analysis and solutions for approaching social issues that affect the people social workers serve. Kemmerer's discussion of links between semantic typology and embodied cognition is welcome, especially his survey of available evidence. Focusing on mechanisms of embodied enculturation, however, we must understand that language is just one part of developmental assemblies that shape cognition, alongside other cultural elements such as sensory learning, behavior patterns, social interactions, and emotional experience. We believe that a source of this problem is an obsolete definition of "culture" as shared mental information that is inconsistent with models of embodied cognition and yet pervasive in human and cognitive sciences. We point to microethnographies of cognitive ecologies as a tractable remedy. Embodied cognition is encultured by mechanisms in addition to language, including sensory learning, behavior, interaction, and emotion. The goal of this study was to test a novel approach (iCanClean) to remove non-brain sources from scalp EEG data recorded in mobile conditions. We created an electrically conductive phantom head with 10 brain sources, 10 contaminating sources, scalp, and hair. We tested the ability of iCanClean to remove artifacts while preserving brain activity under six conditions: Brain, Brain + Eyes, Brain + Neck Muscles, Brain + Facial Muscles, Brain + Walking Motion, and Brain + All Artifacts. We compared iCanClean to three other methods: Artifact Subspace Reconstruction (ASR), Auto-CCA, and Adaptive Filtering. Before and after cleaning, we calculated a Data Quality Score (0–100%), based on the average correlation between brain sources and EEG channels. iCanClean consistently outperformed the other three methods, regardless of the type or number of artifacts present. The most striking result was for the condition with all artifacts simultaneously present. Starting from a Data Quality Score of 15.7% (before cleaning), the Brain + All Artifacts condition improved to 55.9% after iCanClean. Meanwhile, it only improved to 27.6%, 27.2%, and 32.9% after ASR, Auto-CCA, and Adaptive Filtering. For context, the Brain condition scored 57.2% without cleaning (reasonable target). In Australia the impacts of climate change are resulting in considerable water scarcity, a scenario affecting the green and blue spaces that provide well-recognized individual health benefits. However, far less is known about the social health benefits of these spaces, particularly for those residing in rural Australian river communities. In this geographic context, water issues are compounded by a dominant culture that privileges the commodification of water for agricultural purposes over other interests. Using an environmental justice perspective consistent with a green social work approach, this proof-of-concept study contributes a critical element to water debates by examining the cultural, recreational, and environmental meanings of water for the rural river community of Mildura. Results from an online mixed-methods questionnaire (N = 33) show that people privileged cultural meanings of water as fundamental to life, were concerned for river health, and felt marginalized in water debates. Findings suggest that understanding communities' hydrosocial relationships is key to environmentally and socially just water management and to individual, community, and environmental health. Social work can contribute to such environmental issues by working collaboratively to enable communities to exercise their voices and to advocate to decision makers to include consideration of environmental, social, and cultural impact. Background: Postoperative complications are common, but there are limited data regarding their implications on patients' quality of life. This study aimed to address this gap in the literature by analysing the impact of postoperative complications on patients' healthrelated quality of life. Methods: Data from the Perioperative Quality Improvement Programme were analysed, and included patient-level data for 19 685 adults who underwent elective major abdominal procedures in England since 2016. Postoperative complications were graded using the Clavien-Dindo classification. Quality of life was assessed by responses to the EuroQol five-dimension five-levels-of-response (EQ-5D-5L™) questionnaire before surgery, and at 6 and 12 months after operation. Ordinal logistic regression was used to estimate the association between Clavien-Dindo grades and quality of life. Tobit and ordinary least squares regression analyses were used to estimate the quality-adjusted life-year (QALY) loss resulting from postoperative complications between admission and 12 months after surgery. Results: At 6 and 12 months after surgery, increasingly severe postoperative complications were significantly associated with poorer health-related quality of life. The effect of postoperative complications on quality of life was sustained until at least 12 months after operation. Between admission and 12 months after surgery, 0.012, 0.026, 0.033, and 0.086 QALYs were lost for those experiencing a grade I, II, III, or IV postoperative complication respectively. Conclusion: Postoperative complications have a significant and sustained effect on patients' quality of life after surgery; this effect worsens as the severity of the complications increases. Background/Objectives: Cutis marmorata telangiectatica congenita (CMTC) is a capillary malformation characterized by congenital, reticulated, well‐demarcated dark blue, red‐purple, or violaceous macules or plaques, with a coarse fixed livedo pattern. Nearly always, contiguous areas of skin atrophy and/or ulceration are present. CMTC is usually localized but may rarely be generalized. Such generalized cases may be a feature of Adams‐Oliver syndrome (AOS). The nosologic confusion surrounding the term CMTC and uncertainty about the risk of associated abnormalities hinders the appropriate workup of patients and prognostic counseling for families. We hypothesized that the risk of associated anomalies in children with localized CMTC is very low. Methods: We performed a literature review and retrospective review of patients with CMTC to propose a more precise clinical definition and ascertain the risk of associated anomalies. Results: We included 78 patients determined to have a diagnosis of CMTC based on consensus. The majority of patients had localized CMTC. Most patients with generalized CMTC met the criteria for the diagnosis of AOS. The associations found in patients with localized CMTC were mostly dermatological, with atrophy, ulcerations, or erosions present in 71%. Extracutaneous findings were present in 34.4% of patients and consisted mainly of extremity asymmetry (24.5%) that improved over time. Conclusion: Our study showed a very low frequency of extracutaneous anomalies among patients with localized CTMC, ipsilateral limb discrepancy being the most common. We did not find a strong association with any other visceral anomalies that would justify routine evaluation in patients with localized CMTC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Parental self‐efficacy in the domain of weight restoration for adolescents with restrictive eating disorders is central to success in family‐based interventions. We sought to characterize this parental self‐efficacy during a brief hospitalization for medical stabilization and follow‐up among patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) or atypical AN (AAN) enrolled in the StRONG clinical trial to understand the potential impact of inpatient treatment on caregiver empowerment. Methods: Patients were enrolled upon hospital admission and refed per protocol. We examined correlates of the Parents Versus Anorexia (PVA) scale, a measure of parental self‐efficacy in the domain of weight restoration, at admission, discharge, 10‐days, 1‐month, and 3‐months post‐discharge. Multi‐level models evaluated associations among PVA scores and change in %median BMI and Eating Disorder Examination‐Questionnaire (EDE‐Q) global scores over 3‐months post‐discharge. Results: Parents of N = 67 adolescents and young adults M(SD) age 15.79 (2.20) years and 85.00 (11.86) %median BMI participated. PVA scores did not change significantly during hospitalization (p =.053), which lasted on average 10.7 ± 4.5 days. PVA scores increased post‐discharge (p =.009), with significant increase between discharge and 1‐month post‐discharge (p =.045). PVA scores were not associated with subsequent clinical outcomes. Rather, a main effect of time significantly predicted higher %median BMI and improved EDE‐Q scores (p <.001). Discussion: The finding that parental self‐efficacy did not deteriorate during the inpatient stay is promising given the medical necessity of hospitalization to ensure short‐term safety in some cases and the importance of parental self‐efficacy to support long‐term recovery. Public significance: Family‐based treatment is the recommended treatment for young people with AN and AAN, serious psychiatric illnesses that may require inpatient medical stabilization. Prior evidence suggests that parental self‐efficacy in the outpatient setting is a key component of treatment success. Hot-iron disbudding, the practice of cauterizing horn bud tissue to prevent horn growth in dairy calves, results in behavioral changes indicative of pain in the first few days after the procedure. However, few studies have quantified behavioral changes in the following weeks, while the burn wounds are still healing. Female Holstein calves were disbudded with a heated iron and pain relief (5.5 mL lidocaine cornual nerve block and 1 mg/kg oral meloxicam) at 4 to 10 d of age (n = 19) or not disbudded (n = 19). Calves wore ear tag accelerometers that reported the dominant behavior being performed at 1-min intervals from 3 to 21 d after disbudding. Compared with age-matched controls, disbudded calves tended to spend more time inactive throughout the observation period, ruminated less in the first 3 to 11 d after disbudding, and sucked more from a milk bottle beginning 5 d after disbudding until the end of the 21-d observation period. In addition to the accelerometer data, live observations of sleeping (using a behavioral proxy), lying, and ruminating were collected using instantaneous sampling at 5-min intervals for 24-h periods 3, 10, and 17 d after disbudding. Disbudded calves slept with their head down more on all live observation days and spent more time lying on the 17th d after disbudding, but ruminating did not differ compared with controls, in contrast to the accelerometer results. More time spent inactive, sleeping, and lying, and less time spent ruminating (as indicated by the accelerometer) can be interpreted as attempts to reduce painful stimulation of the disbudding wounds and allocate energy to healing. It is unclear whether the greater amount of sucking in the disbudded calves is nutritive (milk present) or non-nutritive (milk absent), as the algorithm did not distinguish the type of sucking, and further research is needed to explore the factors underlying this effect. We conclude that disbudding alters daily behavior patterns for at least 3 wk, far beyond the duration of recommended pain medication, raising additional welfare concerns about the procedure. This article takes up the questions: How does Whiteness affect conceptions of Culturally Sustaining Pedagogies (CSP)? Specifically, when it comes to Whiteness, is there a culture worth sustaining? To begin this examination, we first outline what CSP and Whiteness are. Second, we review the literature within Critical Whiteness Studies (CWS) that takes up pedagogical questions. Third, we theorize the tensions and places of overlap across CSP and CWS—specifically that when it comes to Whiteness there is not a culture worth sustaining, but there is space for White people within CSP as long as they take account of Whiteness. Fourth, we propose a framework for merging CSP and CWS, W.A.A.C.K. C.S.P. (White folks Applying Anti-Racist Cultural Knowledge for Culturally Sustaining Pedagogies). Localizing pipe leaks is a significant challenge for water utilities worldwide. Pipe leaks in water distribution systems (WDSs) can cause the loss of a large amount of treated water, leading to pressure loss, increased energy costs, and contamination risks. What makes localizing pipe leaks challenging is the underground location of the water pipes and the similarity in impact on hydraulic properties (e.g., pressure, flow) due to leaks as compared to the effects of WDS operational changes. Physical methods to locate leaks are expensive, intrusive, and heavily localized. Computational approaches such as data-driven machine learning models provide an economical alternative to physical methods. Machine learning models are readily available and easily customizable to most problems; therefore, there is an increasing trend in their application for leak localization in WDSs. While several studies have applied machine learning models to localize leaks in single pipes and small test networks, these studies have yet to thoroughly test these models against the different complexities of leak localization problems, and hence their applicability to real-world WDSs is still unclear. The simplicity of the WDSs, the oversimplification of leak characteristics, and the lack of consideration of modeling and measuring device uncertainties adopted in most of these studies make the scalability of their proposed approaches questionable to real-world WDSs. Our study addresses this issue by devising four study cases of different complexity that account for realistic leak characteristics and model- and measuring device-related uncertainties. Two established machine learning models—multilayer perceptron (MLP) and convolutional neural network (CNN)—are trained and tested for their ability to localize the leaks and predict their sizes for each of the four study cases using different simulated hydraulic inputs. In addition, the potential benefit of combining different types of hydraulic data as inputs to the machine learning models in localizing leaks is also explored. Pressure and flow, two common hydraulic measurements, are used as inputs to the machine learning models. Further, the impact of single and multiple time point input in leak localization is also investigated. In 2020 the Anglo-American world marked the 400th anniversary of the trans-Atlantic Mayflower voyage with a programme of activities. Intensive and focused interest in the story of the Mayflower is not a new phenomenon—especially in the United States, where it is the bedrock of the nation's 'origin story'. But the tale of the Pilgrims has historically also captured the British imagination. This article outlines a chronology for understanding the cultural importance in Britain of this voyage, from the New England chroniclers to the postcolonial critiques of historians today. In between, it offers a thematic analysis of the different groups which could use the story in their construction of morality and identity, from Romanticists and abolitionists to Anglo-American diplomats and civic boosters. Understanding the afterlife of the voyage in this long perspective, we argue, provides us with a more nuanced understanding of how ideas of history develop and evolve within broader arenas of politics and civil society. We use the concept of historical culture: an approach that is attuned to the interplay between memory, public history, heritage and popular history, and across forms of media (novels, plays, film) and spaces of interaction (cities, politics, movements). As the vogue for commemoration continues to exert power in Britain and beyond, and so does an increasing demand for more critical approaches to historical redress, we thus develop a critical framework that understands the powerful draw of 'history'—both past and present. Dairy cattle are often raised in environments that lack natural feeding opportunities, and they perform abnormal repetitive behaviors (ARBs) as a result. Early life restriction can affect later life behavior. We evaluated whether access to hay in the milk-fed period would affect later life behavior in heifers experiencing short-term feed restriction and whether individuals were consistent in behavioral expression over time. We had 2 competing ideas about how this would unfold. First, being raised with hay, which reduced early life ARBs, could lead to fewer ARBs later in life. Alternatively, heifers that were raised without hay and performed more ARBs in early life might be more prepared for a later feed-restricted environment and thus engage in fewer ARBs than those raised with hay. We studied 24 pair-housed Holstein heifers. As calves, they were fed milk and grain from 0 to 7 wk of age (control) or given additional forage (hay). Tongue rolling, tongue flicking, nonnutritive oral manipulation (NNOM) of pen fixtures, self-grooming, and water drinking were recorded for 12 h (0800–2000 h) during wk 4 and 6 of life using 1–0 sampling at 5-s intervals. At the start of weaning at d 50, all calves were fed a total mixed ration. All calves were fully weaned at d 60 and socially housed by d 65 to 70. After this point, all individuals were raised the same way, according to farm protocol, in groups that included both treatments. At 12.4 ± 0.6 mo of age (mean ± standard deviation), heifers were restricted to 50% of their ad libitum total mixed ration intake for 2 d as part of a short-term feed challenge. Using continuous video recording from 0800 to 2000 h on d 2 of feed restriction, we scored time spent performing oral behaviors: the 5 previously scored while they were calves, along with intersucking, allogrooming, drinking urine, NNOM of rice hull bedding, and NNOM of feed bins. We found that early life access to hay did not affect behavior performed by heifers experiencing short-term feed restriction 1 yr later. Most heifers performed a wide variety of behaviors that appeared abnormal. All heifers performed tongue rolling and NNOM, and at higher levels than when they were calves, while tongue flicks and self-grooming were performed less by heifers. Individual performance of NNOM and tongue rolling were not related across age classes [correlation coefficient (r) = 0.17 and 0.11, respectively], but tongue flicks tended to be correlated (r = 0.37). Intersucking was recorded in 67% of heifers, despite their not being able to suckle a conspecific or dam in early life. Oral behaviors were highly variable across heifers, particularly tongue rolling and intersucking. Outliers, or extreme performance of oral behaviors relative to the rest of the population, were present for many behaviors. Most outliers were expressed by unique heifers that were not extreme in other behaviors. Overall, feeding individually housed, milk-limited calves hay for their first 7 wk did not affect later life performance of oral behaviors. The considerable variability, inconsistency across ages, and excessive performance of some behaviors raises additional questions about how these develop in cattle across life stages and about what we label "abnormal." We report the case of a 10‐month‐old girl who presented with failure to thrive and multiple small atrophic violaceous plaques, with no other findings on her physical examination. The laboratory examinations, abdominal ultrasound and bilateral hand radiography performed were unremarkable. The skin biopsy revealed fusiform cells and focal ossification in the deep dermis. Graduate students intending to pursue an academic career in the sciences have much to gain by learning to teach science but often have limited training opportunities. In response to this need, we designed a one-semester course, Learning Design in Science Education (LDSE), in which students receive formal training in pedagogical theory with role model demonstration of current best practices in active learning. Building from previous descriptions of similar courses, we added a practical experience for the students to utilize their new skills to design and teach a mini science course at the end of the semester. Additionally, students developed a teaching portfolio, complete with a personal teaching statement, syllabus, course materials, and evaluations from peers and faculty. Overall, the course was well received by the students and there are early indications that students benefited from their participation in the course. In this manuscript, we present the design and outcomes of the course, faculty and student perceptions, and thoughts on improvements for future semesters and its potential for use by others. NEW & NOTEWORTHY The need for graduate students and other trainees to learn effective methods for teaching science is greater than ever.
