Polyhalogenated carbazoles (PHCZs) have been widely accepted as emerging pollutants, whereas their ecological and health risks remain uncertain. Herein, female and male Sprague-Dawley (SD) mice were treated with four typical PHCZs to investigate their negative consequences, along with alternations in gut microbiota to indicate underlying mechanisms. In female mice, the relative liver weight ratio increased after four PHCZs exposure; 2-bromocarbazole (2-BCZ) increased urine glucose level; 3-bromocarbazole (3-BCZ) decreased the glucose and total cholesterol levels; 3,6-dichlorocarbazole (3,6-DCCZ) decreased glucose level. The only disturbed biochemical index in male mice was the promoted alkaline phosphatase (ALP) level by 3,6-DCCZ. We also found that the differential blood biochemical indices were correlated with gut microbiota. 3-BCZ and 3,6-DCCZ altered Bacteroidetes and Proteobacteria phyla in female and male mice, which were correlated with metabolic disorders. Our findings demonstrated the correlation between PHCZs induced potential hepatotoxicity and metabolic disorders may be due to their dioxin-like potentials and endocrine disrupting activities, and the gender differences might result from their estrogenic activities. Antibiotic application during the perinatal period is unavoidable in the clinic, but the potential effects on mothers and infants remain unknown. Herein, 25 breast milk samples from mothers who received cefuroxime (CXM) or CXM + cefoxitin (CFX) treatments and fecal samples from their infants were collected to investigate the undesirable effects of antibiotics on the microbiota of mothers and neonates. Furthermore, five fecal samples of infants, whose mothers had antibiotic treatments, were collected at a 6-month postpartum follow-up visit to evaluate the long-term effects on infants' gut microbiota. Moreover, the relative abundance of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in fecal samples was compared to investigate the transfer of ARGs in the infant gut microbiota. The results indicated that the antibiotic treatments had no influence on the microbiota of breast milk. The dominant bacterial phyla in the fecal samples changed to Firmicutes and Proteobacteria after antibiotic treatments, while the bacterial community showed a recuperative trend at the follow-up visits. In addition, the abundance of ARGs in the infant gut microbiota demonstrated a declining trend in the CXM- and CXM + CFX-treated groups, while ARG abundance presented a significant increasing trend after a 6-month recovery period. Conclusion: Antibiotic treatments for mothers during the perinatal period disturb the gut microbiota in neonates. The infants' gut microbiota would partly return to their initial state after rehabilitation, but the transfer of ARGs would leave the hidden trouble of antibiotic resistance. Summary: In the present study, the influences of different origins and harvest periods on the characterisation, structure and antioxidant activity of Porphyra haitanensis polysaccharides (PHPs) were investigated. PHPR03 obtained from the third harvest period (late December) in Raoping possessed the highest content of sulphate group (14.70%), the lowest viscosity (434.34 mL·g−1) and exhibited better antioxidant activity. FTIR spectrum confirmed that PHPs obtained in different origins and harvest periods had similar functional groups (O—H, C—H and C—O group). Thermal gravimetric analysis suggested that PHPR03 has good thermal stability until 182 °C. PHPR03 microstructure was detected using scanning electron microscopy, and it was mainly irregular flocs. Atomic force microscope data showed that its diameter and height ranged from 1.32 to 1.99 μm and 14.16 to 34.92 nm, respectively. X‐ray diffraction and Congo red experiments indicated that PHPR03 belongs to amorphous material with weak rigidity and exists in the form of random coils in an aqueous solution. PHPR03 resulted in a decrease of thiobarbituric acid‐reactive substances value of ground pork. Cypermethrin (CP) is widely used for controlling agricultural and indoor vermin. Previous studies have reported the stereoselective difference of CP in biological activities. However, little is known about their potential mechanisms between metabolic phenotypes and endocrine‐disrupting effects. Herein, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)‐based metabolomics combining metabolite identification and pathway analysis were applied to evaluate the stereoselective metabolic cdisorders induced by CP isomers in human adrenocortical carcinoma cells (H295R) culture medium. Then, gene expression levels related to disturbed metabolic pathways were assessed to verify according to metabolic phenotypes. Metabolomics profiles showed that [(S)‐cyano(3‐phenoxyphenyl)methyl](1R,3R)‐3‐(2,2‐dichloroethenyl)‐2,2‐dimethylcyclopropane‐1‐carboxylate [(1R,3R,αS)‐CP] induced the most significant changes in metabolic phenotypes than did the other stereoisomers. There are 10 differential metabolites (isoleucine, valine, leucine, ethanol, alanine, acetate, aspartate, arginine, lactate, and glucose) as well as two significantly disturbed pathways, including "pyruvate metabolism" and "alanine, aspartate, and glutamate metabolism," that were confirmed in H295R cells culture medium of (1R,3R,αS)‐CP compared with other stereoisomers. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) array also confirmed the results of metabolomics. Our results can help to understand the potential mechanisms between the isomer selectivity in metabolic phenotypes and endocrine‐disrupting effects. Abstract Polyhalogenated carbazoles (PHCZs), which have the similar structure of dioxin, have been reported ubiquitous in the environments and drawn wide concerns. However, their potential ecological and health risks are still poorly understood. Here, wildtype zebrafish embryos were used to evaluate the environmental risks of 2,7-dibromocarbazole (2,7-DBCZ), 3,6-dibromocarbazole (3,6-DBCZ), and 3,6-dichlorocarbazole (3,6-DCCZ). 2,7-DBCZ was the most toxic compound with the 96-h LC 50 value of 581.8 ± 29.3 μg·L−1 and the EC 50 value of 201.5 ± 6.5 μg·L−1 for pericardial edema. The teratogenic effects of 2,7-DBCZ were tested using transgenic zebrafish larvae. The transcriptomic analysis revealed that 90 genes in zebrafish expressed differently after exposure to 2,7-DBCZ, and many pathways were related to aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) activation. The qRT-PCR also showed that expression levels of AhR1 and CYP1 A in zebrafish were significantly up-regulated after exposure to 2,7-DBCZ. In conclusion, 2,7-DBCZ exhibited more potent toxicity and cardiac teratogenic effects, and presented developmental toxicity partially consistent with AhR activation. Our results will be of great help to the risk assessment and regulation-making of PHCZs. Abstract Cypermethrin (CP) is a kind of chiral pesticides that has been defined as endocrine disrupting chemical. The diversity in bioactivity, toxicity, metabolism, bioaccumulation, and degradation behaviors of CP enantiomers as well as the research deficiency had made the risk assessment of CP enantiomers very complicated. Herein, four CP enantiomers were separated as target chemicals to investigate their enantioselective endocrine disrupting effects. Firstly, dual-luciferase reporter gene assays were adopted to investigate their potential endocrine disrupting effects via various receptors. The expression levels of steroid hormones related genes and hormone secretion levels in H295R cell were measured to verify the results. Results from the reporter gene assay showed that 1R-cis-αS- CP (CP11) exhibited glucocorticoid receptor (GR), mineralocorticoid receptor (MR), and thyroid receptor (TR) antagonistic activity with the RIC 20 values of 9.22 × 10−7, 3.33 × 10−7, and 4.47 × 10−7 M, respectively; 1R-trans-αS- CP (CP21) also showed androgen receptor (AR) agonist activity and estrogen receptor (ER) antagonistic activity with the REC 20 and RIC 20 values were 1.07 × 10−4 M and 4.78 × 10−6 M, respectively. Results of qRT-PCR and hormone measurement also showed that CP11 and CP21 could disturb the expression of steroid hormones related genes and hormone secretion accordingly. Results provided here can help to understand the enantioselective ecological and health risks of CP enantiomers comprehensively and provide constructive guidance for the safe use of chiral pesticides and the invention of green pesticides. Total excision of congenital melanocytic nevi (CMN) is not always feasible. We here present our experience of using carbon dioxide laser and Q-switched neodymium-doped yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Nd:YAG) laser to treat nodular CMN of the nasal ala. Q-switched Nd:YAG laser and/or carbon dioxide laser were used to treat eight cases of nasal ala nodular CMN. Carbon dioxide laser was utilized to ablate all visible melanocytic tissue within one session. Ablation was performed so as to reproduce the original anatomical contours as closely as possible. Recurrences were treated in the same way. Q-switched Nd:YAG laser was also used to irradiate all target lesions to achieve the desired end point within one session. The intervals between treatments were at least 8 weeks. Recurrence of melanocytic tissue, scar formation, pigmentation, depigmentation, and the degree of patient satisfaction were recorded at every visit. Two of the eight patients were treated with Q-switched Nd:YAG laser. Although, the lesion lightened in one of them, the hyperplastic tissue persisted. Eventually, these two patients, along with the remaining six patients, were successfully treated with a carbon dioxide laser. We recommend carbon dioxide laser treatment for nodular nasal CMN. This simple treatment does not involve skin flap transplantation and has good cosmetic outcomes. Although Q-switched Nd:YAG laser does lighten some nasal nodular CMNs, it does not eradicate the hyperplastic tissue, and is therefore not an effective treatment for nodular nasal CMN. Objective: To explore the feasibility of developing vascularized tissue-engineered corpus cavernosum with vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-expressing muscle-derived stem cells (MDSCs) as seed cells in a rabbit model. Materials and Methods: MDSCs were isolated and expanded in vitro and transfected with human VEGF165 lentiviral gene vector. The release of VEGF was confirmed using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Acellular corporal collagen matrices (ACCMs) were obtained from donor rabbit penile tissue using an established decellularization process. Transfected and untransfected MDSCs were seeded on ACCMs. Histochemistry and scanning electron microscopy were performed to analyze the growth and distribution of MDSCs. After constructing animal models, we transplanted the seeded ACCMs to the excised corporal space. The neocorpora was harvested and assayed with Western blot and immunohistochemistry at the first and second month. Results: Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay indicated that the release of VEGF was significantly increased in the MDSC-VEGF group compared with the other groups. Histochemistry and scanning electron microscopy indicated that VEGF-expressing MDSCs showed better growth and adequate attachment than other groups on the ACCMs in vitro. Immunohistochemical staining showed that the expression of α-smooth muscle actin, von Willebrand factor, and CD31 in the MDSC-VEGF group was markedly increased at different points. The MDSC-VEGF group showed greater improvement on cavernosal contractile function than the other groups. The expression of endothelial nitric oxide synthase in the engineered corporal tissues was significantly greater in the MDSC-VEGF group than in the other groups at different measurement points. Conclusion: As seed cells, VEGF-overexpressing MDSCs could greatly increase the density of capillaries and the content of endothelial smooth muscle cells in constructing the engineered corporal tissues than can untransfected MDSCs. ABSTRACT Introduction. Traumatic penile injury is one of the urological emergencies. Surgery and conservative management are major treatment methods but are always accompanied by many complications. Aim. To investigate the feasibility of repairing cavernous tissues in acute rabbit penile cavernosal injury model with vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-expressing muscle-derived stem cells (MDSCs). Methods. MDSCs were isolated and transfected with hVEGF165 lentiviral gene vector in vitro. The expression of VEGF was confirmed using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), Western blot, and real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analyses. After animal models were constructed, animals were randomly divided into four groups, which were administrated with MDSCs/VEGF, MDSCs/vector, MDSCs, and normal saline, respectively. A month later, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and intracavernosal pressures (ICP) were performed on the animals. Then penile tissues were harvested and assayed with Western blot and immunohistochemistry. Main Outcome Measures. Real-time PCR, Western blot, ELISA, immunohistochemistry, MRI, and ICP were performed in our experiments. Results. The expression of VEGF significantly increased in the VEGF-expressing MDSCs group compared with those in the MDSCs/vector and MDSCs groups. VEGF protein expression in the injury sites of cavernous tissues were significantly higher in the MDSCs/VEGF group compared with those in other three groups. Immunohistochemical staining showed that α-smooth muscle actin-positive cells, von Willebrand factor-positive cells and capillary density markedly increased in the MDSCs/VEGF group. Animals receiving MDSCs/VEGF showed a significant improvement in cavernosal contractile function and structural repair. Conclusions. Cypermethrin (CP) is a frequently used chiral pesticide comprised of different enantiomers that can induce a variable toxic response in biota, dependent on conformational change. However, the potential mechanism accounting for the enantioselective toxicity induced by CP enantiomers remains unknown. Herein, to shed light on the underlying mechanism of enantioselective cytotoxicity on cell cycle and apoptotic function, an MTT assay, flow cytometric (FCM) approach, and qPCR arrays combining bioinformatic analysis were conducted on HepG2 cell lines following exposure to CP enantiomers. Decreased cell viability in keeping with increased cell arrest and apoptosis was observed in cells exposed to (1 S ,3 R ,α R)-CP, relative to the (1 R ,3 S ,α S)-CP treatment group. PCR array also reflected an enantioselective difference in expression of cell cycle and apoptosis-related genes. Ingenuity pathway analysis (IPA) showed that cell cycle checkpoints, arrest in interphase, death receptor signaling, and apoptosis were among the top canonical and disease and functions predicted to be affected between CP enantiomers. • About 50% pesticide TPs exhibited stronger endocrine disrupting effects than parent compounds. • Nine TPs (Pyr-B, Pyr-E, Pyr-K, ML-B, Pyr-A, Pyr-D, EHPP, CDHB, BX-acid) exhibited estrogen endocrine disrupting effects. • Pyr-F, Pyr-G, ML, and ML-A showed weak glucocorticoid antagonistic activities. The ecological and health risk assessment of environmental pesticide residues have attracted ever-growing attention; however, their transformation products (TPs) have seldom been considered. Herein, we examined the endocrine-disrupting effects of 4 widely used pesticides as pyriproxyfen (Pyr), malathion (ML), benalaxyl (BX), and fenoxaprop-ethyl (FE), together with their 21 TPs through in vitro and in silico approaches, and found approximately 50% of the TPs exhibited stronger endocrine-disrupting effects than their corresponding parent compounds. Specifically, Pyr and 9 TPs (five TPs of Pyr, one of ML, one of BX, and two of FE) exhibited estrogen-disrupting effects, which were also confirmed by results of E-screen and pS2 expression assays, and molecular docking showed that certain hydroxylated TPs could well mimic the binding mode of estrogen with ERα. Meanwhile, two TPs of Pyr, ML and its TP demonstrated weak glucocorticoid antagonistic activities partially contributed by hydrogen bonds. We also discovered that in H295R cells, all the endocrine disruptors increased hormone secretion and the related gene expression levels. Conclusively, since an increasing number of pesticide TPs have been being detected in various environmental media, a more comprehensive understanding of the ecological risk of pesticide TPs is imperative for risk assessments more extensively and regulatory policy-making on pesticide restriction in the future. 2,7-Dibromocarbazole (2,7-DBCZ) is one of the most frequently detected polyhalogenated carbazoles (PHCZs) in the environmental media. 2,7-DBCZ has attracted public attention for its potential for dioxin-like toxicity and cardiovascular toxicity. However, researches on the potential mechanism of angiogenesis inhibition by 2,7-DBCZ is still insufficient. Herein, human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were applied to explore the angiogenic effect of 2,7-DBCZ and the potential underlying mechanisms. 2,7-DBCZ significantly inhibited tube formation in HUVECs in the non-toxic concentration range. PCR array showed that 2,7-DBCZ reduced the expression proportion between VEGFs and Ang2 , thereby inhibiting tube formation in HUVECs. Then, small RNA interference and DNA methylation assays were adopted to explore the potential mechanisms. It has been found that angiopoietin2 (Ang2)-silencing recovered the tube formation inhibited by 2,7-DBCZ. The DNA methylation status of Ang2 promoter also showed a demethylation tendency after exposure. In conclusion, 2,7-DBCZ could demethylate the Ang2 promoter to potentiate Ang2 expression, thus altering angiogenic phenotype of HUVECs by reducing the proportion between Ang2 and VEGFs. The data presented here can help to guide safety measures on the use of dioxin-like PHCZs for their potential adverse effects and provide a method for identifying the relevant biomarkers to assess their cardiovascular toxicity. Abstract Computational toxicology is widely applied to screen tens and thousands of potential environmental endocrine disruptors (EDCs) for its great efficiency and rapid evaluation in recent years. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) with 209 congeners have not been comprehensively tested for their ability to interact with the thyroid receptor (TR), which is one of the most extensively studied targets related to the effects of EDCs. In this study, we aimed to determine the thyroid-disrupting mechanisms of 209 PCBs through the combination of a novel computational ternary classification model and luciferase reporter gene assay. The reporter gene assay was performed to examine the hormone activities of 22 PCBs via TR to classify their profiles as agonistic, antagonistic or inactive. Thus, six agonists, eleven antagonists and seven inactive chemicals against TR were identified in in vitro assays. Then, six relevant variables, including molecular structural descriptors and molecular docking scores, were selected for describing compounds. Machine learning methods (i.e., linear discriminant analysis (LDA) and support vector machines (SVM)) were used to build classification models. The optimal model was obtained by using SVM, with an accuracy of 88.24% in the training set, 80.0% in the test set and 75.0% in 10-fold cross-validation. The remaining 187 PCB congeners' hormone activities were predicted using the obtained models. Out of these PCBs, the SVM model predicted 38 agonists and 81 antagonists. The findings revealed that higher chlorinated PCBs tended to have TR-antagonistic activities, whereas lower chlorinated PCBs were agonists. This study provided a reference for further exploring PCBs' thyroid effect. Raw chitin nanofibers (CNF) through an 8-min high-power sonication process were successfully prepared. Well-preserved nanofibers with diameters of 50–100 nm and lengths of 3–10 μm were observed by atomic force microscopy. The high aspect ratio induced strong entanglement under high shear rates, leading to a typical nanofiber four-region shear-thinning behavior. These native chitin nanofibers were incorporated into chitosan film-forming solutions at different concentrations. FTIR results indicated intermolecular hydrogen bonds between CS and CNF. Tensile strength was significantly enhanced with the inclusion of CNF, with the highest stress at 30% CNF incorporation. Elongation at break increased up to 35% with 10% CNF concentration, gradually decreasing with higher CNF content. CS with 20% addition of CNF content was chosen for curcumin addition considering the high mechanical performance and low grammage value. Oxygen transmission rate reduced slowly with increasing CNF concentration, and a significant drop by about 90% was observed upon curcumin inclusion. UV blocking performance and antioxidant ability were drastically improved after curcumin inclusion. The utilization of raw CNF as a film reinforcement nanofiller offers several advantages, including ease of preparation, higher aspect ratio, longer length, and superior mechanical performance. CNF-reinforced chitosan films emerge as potent candidates for functional food packaging materials. The frequency of detection and concentrations of bifenthrin, a pyrethroid insecticide, in the waterways inhabited by the endangered species, steelhead trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), has become a significant concern for regulatory agencies. Endocrine disruption has been observed with estrogenic and anti-estrogenic responses in fish species at different life stages. Since several studies have indicated alterations in dopaminergic signaling associated with endocrine responses, juvenile steelhead were exposed to environmentally relevant concentrations of 60 or 120 ng/L bifenthrin for two weeks. Fish brains were assessed for dopamine levels and the expression of genes involved in dopaminergic and estrogenic processes, such as catechol- o -methyltransferase (comt) and monoamine oxidase (mao). Vitellogenin (vtg) and estrogenic receptors (ERα1 , ERβ1 , and ERβ2) were also evaluated in livers of the animals. Dopamine concentrations were significantly higher in fish brains following bifenthrin exposure. Consistent with a reduction in dopamine clearance, there was a significant decrease in the mRNA expression of comt with increased bifenthrin concentration. Hepatic expression of ERα1 and ERβ2 mRNA was significantly decreased with increased bifenthrin concentration. These data support the possible mechanism of bifenthrin altering the dopaminergic pathway at low ng/L concentrations, in juvenile steelhead, which could interfere with endocrine feedback loops. These findings support the need for and importance of identifying species and life stage differences in pesticide modes of action to reduce uncertainties in risk assessments. Solar sails, characterized by passive propulsion, have attracted an increasing attention of researchers, which has important value in the field of deep space exploration. SIASAIL-I is an on-orbit verification mission for solar sails based on a 6U cubesat, designed and produced by Shenyang Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences (SIA, CAS). SIASAIL-I deployment mechanism is composed by two-stage deployment system, which can achieve direction transformation, stretching and membrane deploying in the narrow space of the cubesat. SIASAIL-I only takes up within 0.5U (48 mm × 90 mm × 95 mm) space and the total mass is within 1kg. SIASAIL-I was successfully launched from the Xiaoxiang-1 07 satellite on August 31, 2019, and successfully deployed a 0.78 m × 0.78 m sail in low earth orbit in December. Bisphenol analogues including bisphenol A (BPA), bisphenol AF (BPAF), bisphenol F (BPF), and bisphenol S (BPS) share similar chemical structures and endocrine disrupting effects. Their effects on metabolisms, however, are so far only marginally understood. In this study, NMR-based metabonomic profiles of HepG2 cell culture media and PCR array were used to assess the metabolomics disturbances and gene expression levels of HepG2 in response to four BPs (BPA, BPAF, BPF, and BPS). The results indicated that BP analogues resulted in disturbances in 7–15 metabolites that were classified as amino acid (alanine, glutamine, glutamate), intermediates and end-products in the glycolysis (pyruvate) and the tricarboxylic acid cycle (acetate, lactate). Their rank in order according to the number of metabolites and pathways was BPF > BPA > BPAF > BPS. The common disrupted pathways (pyruvate metabolism; alanine, aspartate, and glutamate metabolism) indicated enhanced glycolysis. The following glucometabolic PCR array analysis suggested that although four BPs shared the capability of disrupting glucose metabolism, they may act through different mechanisms: BPAF has increased the pyruvate kinase (PKLR) expression level, which implied enhanced glycolysis that was agreed with NMR results. The other three BP analogues, however, decreased the expression level of glucokinase (GCK) that indicated glucose sensing impairment. Our results demonstrated the potential for using metabolomic and PCR array to understand the underlying action of mechanisms and identify the potential targets for future targeted risk assessment. In previous studies, 6:2 chlorinated polyfluorinated ether sulfonic acid (6:2 Cl-PFESA), a perfluorooctanesulfonate alternative, has been demonstrated to be toxic to mammals. However, the toxic mechanism of 6:2 Cl-PFESA in mammals is unknown. Herein, adolescent male rats were administered 50 μg/kg/Day 6:2 Cl-PFESA for 28 days (oral gavage) to estimate the toxicity of 6:2 Cl-PFESA and investigate its toxic mechanism. Significant changes in some hematological indicators (e.g., aspartate transaminase and neutrophils) and liver sections (inflammatory cell infiltration) indicated that 6:2 Cl-PFESA exposure caused rat hepatotoxicity. Six steroid hormones (e.g., testosterone, progesterone, and cortisol) in serum and thirteen genes in testicles (related to the pathway of steroid hormone biosynthesis) were significantly regulated in 6:2 Cl-PFESA-treated rats. This suggested that 6:2 Cl-PFESA induced rat endocrine disorders. Compared to the controls, the mean relative abundance of Ruminococcaceae , Pasteurellaceae , Micrococcaceae , and Desulfovibrionaceae was significantly regulated by 1.3-, 0.40-, 0.32-, and 3.2-fold in the 6:2 Cl-PFESA rats, respectively. The 6:2 Cl-PFESA treatment also significantly disturbed 47 gut metabolites (29 upregulated and 18 downregulated), mainly bile acids, short-chain fatty acids, and amino acids. In summary, 6:2 Cl-PFESA induced endocrine disorders and liver inflammation in rats by altering the gut microbiota-gut-testis/liver axis. This study first reveals the toxic mechanism of 6:2 Cl-PFESA in mammals through a multiomics approach and provides comprehensive insight into the toxic mechanism of 6:2 Cl-PFESA. • First evaluation of the endocrine disruption of emerging PHCZs. • ERα agonistic potency was evidenced by in vitro , in vivo , and in silico. • E2 levels were also elevated following certain PHCZs exposure. • GRα antagonistic activities were also observed. Polyhalogenated carbazoles (PHCZs) are an emerging class of persistent, bioaccumulative compounds that are structurally and chemically related to dioxins. They have been detected widely in sediment, river, and soil samples, but their environmental risks are largely unknown. Therefore, seven common PHCZs were tested for their endocrine disrupting potential in silico , in vitro , and in vivo. A dual-luciferase reporter gene assay was used to detect receptor-mediated (agonist or antagonistic) activity (concentration range: 10−9–10−5 M) against the estrogen receptor α (ERα), glucocorticoid receptor α (GRα), and mineralocorticoid receptor (MR). The alterations in the steroidogenesis pathway were investigated in H295R cells. Antagonistic effects against GRα were observed with five PHCZs, along with an increase in the cortisol levels of H295R cells. The most common effect observed was that of the agonistic activity of ERα, with the molecular docking analysis further indicating that hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interactions may stabilize the interaction between PHCZs and the estrogen receptor binding pocket. In addition, a seven-day exposure of young female rats to three PHCZs (27-BCZ, 3-BCZ, and 36-BCZ) resulted in changes in serum E2 levels, uterine epithelium cell heights, and relative uterus weights. In conclusion, endocrine-disrupting effects, especially the estrogenic effects, were observed for the tested PHCZs. • We explore whether each of the 30 Chinese provinces will peak emissions by 2030. • We combine STIRPAT models and scenario analyses to predict emissions trajectories. • 26 provinces are likely to peak emissions under at least one scenario, but 4 are not. • Peaking time and cumulative emissions are considered in seeking optimal peaking path. • Provincial results in aggregate show China may peak in 2028–2040 and 2030 is optimal. China has pledged in its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) that its carbon emissions will peak no later than 2030. However, the varying carbon emissions trajectories of individual provinces make it difficult to determine whether China can fulfill this ambitious goal on time. To bring transparency and clarity to this core issue, this paper explores for the first time whether and how all the 30 Chinese provinces will peak their energy-related emissions in future by developing a set of extended STIRPAT models that investigate the driving forces behind each province and integrating the estimates into scenario analysis for peaking simulation. We observe that, despite continued economic growth, 26 provinces are highly likely to reach peak emissions under at least one scenario, whereas the remaining are not. We find it interesting that the earliest peaking scenarios may not be the best option for those provinces whose cumulative carbon emissions are estimated to be considerably large. To ensure a viable reaching of China's peak emissions, much more attention should be paid to seeking for the most appropriate emissions trajectory to peak at the subnational level with relatively low cumulative value. Provincial results in aggregate show that China may peak emissions in the period 2028–2040, with cumulative emissions ranging from 403,607 Mt CO 2 (corresponding to peaking in 2030) to 456,191 Mt CO 2 (corresponding to peaking in 2038), while 2030 would be the optimal year for the country to peak because of the lowest cumulative carbon emissions. Our findings only provide a deeper understanding of China's potential peaking paths by province, but also assist policy makers in better prediction and evaluation of possible emissions trajectory for other nations and the whole world from a bottom-up perspective, and therefore could be of global significance.
