In chapter 13, Sarah P. C. Dahlen and Jeff D. Corrigan describe how their library developed an assessment tool to determine the information literacy skills and library knowledge of their transfer students to better understand and support them. The article offers information of Austin Harbutt MacCormick who may be best known in Texas for conducting a comprehensive survey of the Texas Prison System in 1944. Topics discussed include the sweeping reforms that followed his survey revitalized Texas penitentiaries and the manner in which prisoners were supervised; and 1974 Carasco Siege of the Huntsville Unit and the Ruiz lawsuits in the 1980s often overshadow Austin MacCormick's story.

This survey of graduate students' and faculty's use and non-use of ebooks is a follow-up to the data captured in 2011 from the same mid-sized public university in southeast Texas. In addition to providing a change comparison of faculty and graduate students' ebooks usage over the past decade, the study also aims to contribute to the growing ebook literature examining faculty and graduate students' perception and use of ebooks for different academic activities. Survey results showed that while the proportion of respondents who are library ebook users had increased significantly over the past decade, both ebook users and non-users' attitude towards e- and print books remained consistent. Most ebook users appreciated features such as keyword searches and copy and pasting, but the majority also valued the option to print out pages and chapters. Respondents' format preferences also shifted based on their academic needs, although some of the feature limitations that prompted some users to switch from or avoid library ebooks were caused by DRM restrictions that could be removed by publishers. The findings have implications beyond the institution for academic library ebook acquisition and communication with local user populations. Following two previous studies in 2010 and 2013, this study intends to identify current trends of Sam Houston State University students' technology and communication needs and preferences regarding library services and resources. Drawing comparisons to two previous local studies and national data sets, such as those from Pew Internet Research and the EDUCAUSE Center for Analysis and Research (ECAR), the findings revealed, among other things, a decline in tablet usage and interest, continued need for library computers, and a complex relationship between social media usage and engagement with the library. The results of this survey will inform and guide the library and the profession to most efficiently and effectively offer desired library services and engage students on appropriate social media platforms. This case study details a library instruction activity developed by a team of academic librarians, which intended to leverage experiential learning to make students and faculty aware of the function, capabilities, and limitations of text-generating artificial intelligence (AI) tools like OpenAI's ChatGPT. The activity is described, with its development connected to key instructional theories and frameworks. Feedback is shared from student, faculty, and librarian perspectives, and future possibilities for academic librarians to grow and adapt similar AI literacy activities are explored.
