A blow-in type windowless thick He gas target has been developed to measure He(C,O) γ cross section for astrophysical interests. We use a C beam of energy from 6 to 2.8 MeV and detect O recoils at forward angles. Numerous C backgrounds have been rejected by particle identification techniques. O backgrounds from the target are not many but fatally harmful. Our techniques to reduce the O backgrounds are described. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Space Star (SS) anomaly in nd breakup cross section was first reported in 1989 at E = 13 MeV (Strate et al. in Nucl Phys A 501:51, ), but its origin has not been found yet. In order to obtain suggestions for its origin, we made systematic measurements of pd breakup cross section around SS. In SS configuration, three outgoing nucleons form an equilateral triangle and the triangle is perpendicular to the beam axis. Necessity of the equilateral and perpendicular conditions of SS anomaly was investigated by systematic experiments. A cross section measurement employing a direct O detection method for the reaction energies from E = 2.4 to 0.7 MeV is planned at Kyushu University Tandem Laboratory. To perform this experiment and to obtain quantitative information about the cross section to within an error of 10%, we have developed several instruments, including a blow-in type windowless gas target and a ionization chamber. A target thickness of 24 × 3.9 Torr cm was achieved using the developed gas target. The particle identification was successfully performed by using the energy deposit in the ionization chamber. Space Star (SS) anomalies in nd and pd breakup reactions below 20 MeV were reported since 1989, but their origin has not been found yet. We have considered two conditions for the SS anomalies : condition (a) where three outgoing nucleons form an equilateral triangle and condition (b) in which the triangle is perpendicular to the beam axis. Cross sections of pd breakup reaction at E = 250 MeV were measured systematically in single-proton detection and in two-proton coincidence detection. Measured cross section is up to two times higher than calculated ones. The enhancement of breakup cross section is similar to reported enhancement in pd elastic scattering cross section. Space Star anomaly in Nd breakup reaction below 20 MeV is well-known. Also, Quasi-Free Scattering (QFS) anomaly in Nd breakup reaction below 40 MeV has been reported from several experiments. Origin(s) of QFS anomaly has not been known, similarly to origin(s) of SS anomaly. We have been making a systematic measurement on pp-QFS cross section, previously at E = 9.5 MeV and 13 MeV and recently at 7.5 and 19 MeV. We used an unpolarized p-beam to correctly measure only cross section. Our data agreed well with pd calculation by A. Deltuva. So far, no pp-QFS anomaly has been found in our experiments. Possibility of existence of nn ground state was discussed in 2011 by H. Witala and W. Glöckle based on anomalous enhancement of nn QFS (Quasi-Free Scattering) cross section in nd breakup at E = 26 MeV reported in 2002. To search for the nn ground state, we have made a feasibility study of D(H,He) nn and D( n, p) nn experiments. H and n secondary beams are produced respectively by D( d,H) p and D( d, n)He reactions at forward angle, and are injected on a CD foil target. If an nn ground state exists, a single peak is observed in the He and p energy spectra. We conclude that these experiments are feasible. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

C+He fusion reaction at E = 0.3 MeV is one of the main reaction in He-burning in stars, and is very important in nuclear synthesis. However the fusion cross section has not been determined yet in spite of 40 years efforts in the world. Recently we succeeded in the measurement at 1.5 MeV. We have a plan to make direct measurement of the total fusion cross section down to 0.7 MeV at Kyushu University Tandem accelerator Laboratory (KUTL), and to determine the cross section at 0.3 MeV by extrapolation. We measured pd breakup cross section at E = 19 MeV (E/A = 9.5 MeV) at Star configuration at 120° ≤ inclination angle α ≤ 180°, i.e. apart from Space Star configuration ( α = 90°), and found that pd Star cross section at 120° ≤ α ≤ 180° agree with pd calculation, contrary to Köln data. By our systematic experiments on Star configurations so far and recent reliable pd calculations, existence of Space Star anomaly has been established in pd breakup at E/A = 9.5 and 13 MeV. Cross section and analyzing power Ay of $^2 {\rm H}(\vec p,p)pn$ reaction at $E_{\vec p} = 247\, {\rm MeV}$ were measured and large disagreements with 3N calculations were found especially at forward angles. Effects of 2π3NF are too small to explain the discrepancy. To microscopically investigate the discrepancy, a 2H(p, pp)n experiment is planned. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Inclusive measurements of the D( p, p) pn reaction were made at incident proton energies of 248 MeV and 13 MeV, to investigate the global feature of the pd breakup reaction at intermediate and low energies. At 248 MeV, the cross section and analyzing power A y were measured at four angles from 7° to 20°. The data largely disagree with Faddeev calculations even if 2π-exchange three-nucleon force (2π3NF) or Δ-isobar is included, and the disagreement increases at forward angles. At 13 MeV, the cross section was measured at eight angles from 10° to 70°. The data are well reproduced by a recent pd Faddeev calculation, and the effects of Δ-isobar at 13 MeV are very small. Abstract: A blow-in type windowless gas target (BIGT) has been developed for nuclear experiments near stellar energy, especially for a 4He+12C→16O+γ experiment. The target has a multi-layer structure for differential pumping. Cooling of the target by liquid nitrogen was tried, and the target thickness was found to increase only 1.2 times under a constant gas flow rate. The present target thickness along a beam axis is 1.5kPa×2.94cm, which is about a half of our goal. A gas target having very thin windows was also developed using a 50nm thick silicon nitride foil. A measurement of tensor analyzing power and of reaction at was made at RCNP. Both the relation of and the discrepancy in between experiment and calculations were confirmed at 137 MeV, in consistent with our previous measurement at 196 MeV. We made three kinds of measurements at ; i) experiment at ppFSI, ii) experiment at , and iii) experiment at many angle pairs around the space star. For an easy estimate of Coulomb effects in pd breakup reaction, we proposed Watson- Migdal & Faddeev calculation which was found to give nearly the same results as the pd calculation by Deltuva et al.. Cross sections of i) and ii) are well reproduced by the pd calculation, however, 10-15% discrepancy has been found between the cross section of iii) and the calculation. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

A direct measurement of 4He(12C, 16O)γ reaction cross section is in progress at Kyushu University tandem laboratory (KUTL). A 12C beam is incident on a windowless 4He gas target. The 16O recoils are separated from the beam by a recoil mass separator and are detected by a Si-detector. In order to increase beam intensity, target thickness and detection efficiency, original instruments and methods have been newly developed. To reduce background (BG), a beam from the tandem accelerator was pulsed. Recently a long-time chopper was developed to further separate the reaction recoils and BG, and a test measurement of 4He(12C, 16O)γ reaction cross section at Ecm = 2.4 MeV was made. Direct measurement of the 4He(12C,16O)γ reaction cross section by detecting 16O recoils is in progress at Kyushu University tandem laboratory (KUTL). A long-time chopper (LTC) has been developed to reject backgrounds from 16O recoils which have time (energy) spread. In the measurement of 4He(12C,16O)γ cross section at Ecm = 2.4 MeV, LTC was found to reduce the backgrounds by about three orders of magnitude. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

A new method to obtain low-energy high-intensity beams from a tandem accelerator of a high design-voltage is presented. In this method, the beam undergoes repeated actions of acceleration and deceleration from alternating voltage gradient along the beam axis, so that the beam divergence is minimized. The practical test was carried out at the 10 MV tandem accelerator at Kyushu University, and the beam transmission efficiency at a low operation voltage of 1 MV was found to be an order of magnitude increased. The method also enables the accelerator to stand a high beam load. The necessary changes in the accelerator configuration are quite simple and easily achievable at a low cost. Escherichia coli in phosphate-buffered saline irradiated with far-infrared (FIR) energy was injured and killed even under the condition where the bulk temperature of the suspension was maintained below the lethal temperature. Using four kinds of antibiotics (penicillin G, chloramphenicol, nalidixic acid and rifampicin), we investigated the FIR irradiation-induced damage to E. coli on the basis of the sensitivity changes to the antibiotics. FIR irradiation increased the organism’s sensitivity to rifampicin both below and above the lethal temperature. The increase in sensitivity to chloramphenicol was observed only when FIR irradiation occurred above the lethal temperature. These results suggest that the mechanism of FIR irradiation-induced death in E. coli differs according to whether the radiation exposure occurs above or below the lethal temperature. Cross section of pd breakup at Star configuration (equilateral triangle) was systematically measured at E = 9.5 and 13 MeV/A with varying an angle α between the Star plane and the beam axis. At 13 MeV/A, Star anomaly appears only around Space Star ( α = 90°) configuration. At 9.5 MeV/A, same feature was found in our experimental data at α = 0°−105°, but large difference of about −25% at α = 124°−180° was reported by Köln group. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The reaction C + He → O + γ at E = 0.3 MeV plays an important role in stellar evolution, but the reaction cross section has not been measured yet. Recently we succeeded to measure total cross section of the reaction down to E = 1.5 MeV at Kyushu University. In our previous inclusive experiment on H( p, p) pn at 247 MeV, the measured cross section at forward angles is about twice larger than 3 N calculation with ππ 3NF. Therefore, we have made an exclusive experiment on H( p, p p) n at the same energy. The preliminary data suggest that the cross section was enhanced at forward angle of θ and θ. Systematic measurement of the D( p, pp) n cross section at E p = 13 MeV at star configurations at various inclined angle α is in progress at Kyushu University tandem accelerator laboratory (KUTL). The measured cross section at space star (α = 90°) is about 12% below the recent pd calculation. Precise measurements of the deuteron to proton polarization transfer coefficients for the d-p elastic scattering have been made at 135 MeV/u at RIKEN Accelerator Research Facility. The obtained results are compared with the Faddeev calculations based on modern nucleon-nucleon forces together with Tucson-Melbourne, Tucson-Melbourne' and Urbana-Argonne type of three nucleon forces. A Water-in-Powder cosmetic is one encapsulating a large amount of water with powders. In this study we explain why the cosmetic is possible. First we focused on hydrophilic and hydrophobic balance of nano-sized powder surface. We looked into the surface state of powders with the gas adsorption test and discovered the functional powders that have the optimized balance of hydrorepellency due to fractal surface and hydrophilicity due to free hydroxyl groups. By using this material, we created a new powder technology that can encapsulate a large quantity of water stably. We also looked into how the powders encapsulated water by observation with wet-SEM and how the encapsulated water is stabilized by measuring water mobility with 17Q-M\IJR As a result, we developed a new technology with water and powder. By encapsulating a large amount of water, we achieved a cosmetic with many unique characteristics : the powder cosmetic can change into liquid by application of friction on skin, it gives us comfort in use and provides a watery, cool feel. It also provides excellent makeup function by spreading smoothly on skin to form a uniform makeup coating. IFSCC Magazine, 11 (2008) (1) 31–34 A water-in-powder cosmetic is one in which a large amount of water is encapsulated in a powder. In this study we describe the development of this type of cosmetic. We first focused on the hydrophilic/hydrophobic balance of the nano-sized powder surface. In our previous measurement of pd radiative capture at E d = 137 and 196 MeV, we found an interesting fact that the measured tensor analyzing powers show the relation A xx ≈ A yy , although calculated A xx and A yy are apparently different, A xx ≠ A yy . The measured A yy agrees fairly well with the 3 N calculations, and the measured A xx largely disagrees with calculated A xx . Similar experiments on pd capture have been made at KVI at nearly the same energies of 130–180 MeV. The KVI data also support A xx ≈ A yy relation, but absolute values of A xx and A yy at KVI are about half of RCNP data. Therefore, we made a new experiment of pd capture at E d = 196 MeV. This study retrospectively investigated the clinical features and risk factors of allergic reactions induced by oxaliplatin administration. This study investigated the incidence of allergic reactions and analysed the background and laboratory data in patients with colorectal cancer treated with oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy at Kyushu Medical Center between April 2012 and September 2012. A total of 62 patients were included in this study. The number of patients in the allergic and non-allergic groups was 7 and 55 respectively. The incidence of allergic reactions was 11.3%. We compared the patients' characteristics and laboratory data between the two groups and found that the average dose of dexamethasone in the allergic group was significantly lower than that observed in the non-allergic group ( P = 0.0111). Furthermore, the incidence of allergic reactions in the group that received prophylaxis of less than 12 mg of dexamethasone was significantly higher than that observed in the group that received more than 12 mg of dexamethasone ( P = 0.0103). In conclusion, a lower dexamethasone dose is a possible risk factor for allergic reactions induced by the administration of oxaliplatin; however, given the retrospective design used in this study, further validation of this finding is warranted. The effect of high pressure and ion beam irradiation on the magnitude of giant magnetoresistance (GMR) of Fe/Cr magnetic multilayers (MML), [\Fe(20~\ Å )/\Cr(t~\ Å )]20 (abbreviated as \Fe/Cr(t)), has been measured at 77.4 K. It is found that the GMR of Fe/Cr(8) is decreased but that of Fe/Cr(30) is increased by applying pressure. By ion beam irradiation, the electrical resistance of these MMLs is increased significantly and the magnitude of GMR is decreased. Furthermore we have measured the GMR of irradiated Fe/Cr(8) and Fe/Cr(30) under high pressure and compared the results with the sample before irradiation. The GMR of Fe/Cr(8) after the irradiation is found to increase with pressure and the pressure-coefficient of the saturation resistivity is extremely large. These results are discussed on the basis of the spin dependent scattering by the roughness at the interfaces and also bulk scattering in MML in connection with an irradiation-induced instability of the electronic states in Fe/Cr(8). We measured D(p, pp)n cross section at Ep = 9.5 MeV and 13 MeV at off-plane star configurations, including the space star where the star is perpendicular to the beam axis. The experimental results were compared with recent pd breakup calculations using screened Coulomb force, and disagreement was found to smoothly vary with an inclination angle of the off-plane star, α. At Ed = 26 MeV, H(d,pp)n cross section was measured at 4 angle pairs corresponding to off-plane star and compared with recent pd calculations. A rotary foil target was developed for this experiment. The present data and previous data revealed dependence of the star anomaly on the star-inclination angle α. The angular dependence at Ep = 13 MeV differs much with that at 9.5 MeV. Abstract: Compact liquid hydrogen, deuterium, and helium targets were constructed for radioisotope beam experiments at RIKEN. Hydrogen, deuterium, or helium gas is liquefied by a Gifford–McMahon cycle refrigerator instead of being supplied as a cryogenic liquid. The liquefied gas is accumulated in a target cell placed at the center of a -ray detector array. The targets were operated stably in several experiments. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
