Background: One in four labors are induced. The process of cervical ripening can be lengthy and pre‐labor hospitalization is required. Outpatient cervical ripening can be an attractive alternative. Objectives: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of outpatient cervical ripening with a balloon catheter compared with inpatient balloon catheter or prostaglandin E2 (PGE2). Search Strategy: The PubMed, MEDLINE, Embase, ClinicalTrials.gov, and Cochrane Library databases were searched from their inception to October 15, 2022. Selection Criteria: Randomized controlled trials comparing the outpatient balloon catheter with inpatient balloon catheter or inpatient PGE2 for term cervical ripening. Data Collection and Analysis: Bayesian network meta‐analysis was performed. The primary outcome was the cesarean delivery rate. The secondary outcomes included instrumental delivery, the time from intervention‐to‐birth, oxytocin augmentation, total hospital duration, and maternal/neonatal adverse events. Main Results: Twenty‐nine randomized controlled trials with a total of 6004 participants were identified. No difference in the cesarean delivery rate was revealed among the three interventions. Compared with inpatient balloon catheter, outpatient balloon catheter had shorter total hospital duration (mean difference −8.58, 95% confidence interval −17.02 to −1.10). No differences were revealed in the time from intervention‐to‐birth, instrumental delivery, postpartum hemorrhage, 5‐min Apgar score less than 7, umbilical cord arterial pH less than 7.1, and neonatal intensive care unit admission among the three interventions. Conclusions: Outpatient balloon catheter in low‐risk term pregnancies is an available option that could be considered for cervical ripening. The safety and effectiveness are comparable to inpatient cervical ripening methods. Assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) have become the main treatment for infertility. ART treatment can be a stressful life event for infertile females. Whether there is an association between ARTs and postpartum depressive symptoms (PDS) has not been established. PubMed, MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, and CNKI were searched. The pooled outcome was the difference in incidence of PDS within 1 year postpartum between ARTs and the spontaneous pregnancy group. A total of 12 cohort studies, which were conducted in eight developed countries and two developing countries, were involved. In total, 106,338 pregnant women, including 4990 infertile females with ARTs treatment and 101,348 women with spontaneous pregnancy, were enrolled in our final analysis. ARTs women had a lower incidence of PDS compared to the spontaneous pregnancy group according to a random effect model (OR = 0.83, 95 % CI: 0.71–0.97, p = 0.022, I 2 = 62.0 %). Subgroup analyses indicated that studies on late PDS (follow-up: 3–12 months postpartum) were more heterogeneous than those on early PDS (follow-up: <3 months postpartum) (I 2 = 24.3 % vs. I 2 = 0 %, interaction p -value < 0.001). There was a strong relationship between ARTs and late PDS (OR = 0.65, 95 % CI: 0.55–0.77, p < 0.001). Therefore, the possible source of heterogeneity was the postpartum evaluation time, which was confirmed by post-hoc meta-regression. Some underlying confounders, such as previous psychiatric illness, the limited availability of ARTs, and ethnic disparities, cannot be ignored and may have biased interpretation of the results. The available data suggested that ARTs were associated with lower incidence of PDS, especially when follow-up lasted over 3 months. However, these findings should be interpreted with caution. We propose a nested semiparametric model to analyze a case‐control study where genuine case status is missing for some individuals. The concept of a noncase is introduced to allow for the imputation of the missing genuine cases. The odds ratio parameter of the genuine cases compared to controls is of interest. The imputation procedure predicts the probability of being a genuine case compared to a noncase semiparametrically in a dimension reduction fashion. This procedure is flexible, and vastly generalizes the existing methods. We establish the root‐n$$ n $$ asymptotic normality of the odds ratio parameter estimator. Our method yields stable odds ratio parameter estimation owing to the application of an efficient semiparametric sufficient dimension reduction estimator. Epstein‐Barr virus (EBV) is associated with various malignancies and infects >90% of the global population. EBV latent proteins are expressed in numerous EBV‐associated cancers and contribute to carcinogenesis, making them critical therapeutic targets for these cancers. Thus, this study aims to develop mRNA‐based therapeutic vaccines that express the T‐cell‐epitope‐rich domain of truncated latent proteins of EBV, including truncatedlatent membrane protein 2A (Trunc‐LMP2A), truncated EBV nuclear antigen 1 (Trunc‐EBNA1), and Trunc‐EBNA3A. The vaccines effectively activate both cellular and humoral immunity in mice and show promising results in suppressing tumor progression and improving survival time in tumor‐bearing mice. Furthermore, it is observed that the truncated forms of the antigens, Trunc‐LMP2A, Trunc‐EBNA1, and Trunc‐EBNA3A, are more effective than full‐length antigens in activating antigen‐specific immune responses. In summary, the findings demonstrate the effectiveness of mRNA‐based therapeutic vaccines targeting the T‐cell‐epitope‐rich domain of EBV latent proteins and providing new treatment options for EBV‐associated cancers. Jing-Fang powder ethyl acetate extract (JFEE) and its isolated C (JFEE-C) possess favorable anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic properties; however, their inhibitory effects on T cell activity remain unknown. In vitro , Jurkat T cells and primary mouse CD4+ T cells were used to explore the regulatory effects of JFEE and JFEE-C as well as their potential mechanisms on activated T cells. Furthermore, T cell-mediated atopic dermatitis (AD) mouse model was established to confirm these inhibitory effects in vivo. The results showed that JFEE and JFEE-C inhibited T cell activation by suppressing the production of interleukin-2 (IL-2) and interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) without showing cytotoxicity. Flow cytometry showed the inhibitory effects of JFEE and JFEE-C on the activation-induced proliferation and apoptosis of T cells. Pretreatment with JFEE and JFEE-C also decreased the expression levels of several surface molecules, including CD69, CD25, and CD40L. Moreover, it was confirmed that JFEE and JFEE-C inhibited T cell activation by downregulating the TGF-β-activated kinase 1 (TAK1)/nuclear kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB)/mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathways. The combination of these extracts with C25–140 intensified the inhibitory effects on IL-2 production and p65 phosphorylation. The oral administration of JFEE and JFEE-C notably weakened AD manifestations, including the infiltration of mast cells and CD4+ cells, epidermis and dermis thicknesses, serum levels of immunoglobulin E (IgE) and thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP), and gene expression levels of T helper (Th) cells-related cytokines in vivo. The underlying mechanisms of the inhibitory effects of JFEE and JFEE-C on AD were related to attenuating T cell activity through NF-κB/MAPK pathways. In conclusion, this study suggested that JFEE and JFEE-C exhibited anti-atopic efficacy by attenuating T cell activity and might possess a curative potential for T cell-mediated diseases. Graphene, with its excellent properties and unique structure, has been extensively studied in the context of modifiable cement-based materials. However, a systematic summary of the status of numerous experimental results and applications is lacking. Therefore, this paper reviews the graphene materials that improve the properties of cement-based materials, including workability, mechanical properties, and durability. The influence of graphene material properties, mass ratio, and curing time on the mechanical properties and durability of concrete is discussed. Furthermore, graphene's applications in improving interfacial adhesion, enhancing electrical and thermal conductivity of concrete, absorbing heavy metal ions, and collecting building energy are introduced. Background: Post-dural puncture headache (PDPH) is a major complication of neuraxial anesthesia. PDPH usually occurs after Caesarean section in obstetric patients. The efficacy of prophylactic pharmacological therapies remains controversial. Methods: Seven pharmacological therapies (aminophylline (AMP), dexamethasone, gabapentin/pregabalin (GBP/PGB), hydrocortisone, magnesium, ondansetron (OND), and propofol (PPF)), were studied in this Bayesian network meta-analysis. The primary outcome was the cumulative incidence of PDPH within 7 days. Secondary outcomes included the incidence of PDPH at 24 and 48 h postoperatively, the severity of headache in PDPH patients (24, 48, and 72 h postoperatively), and postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV). Results: Twenty-two randomized controlled trials with 4,921 pregnant women (2,723 parturients received prophylactic pharmacological therapies) were included. The analyses demonstrated that PPF, OND, and AMP were efficient in decreasing the cumulative incidence of PDPH during the follow-up period compared to the placebo group (OR = 0.19, 95% CI: 0.05 to 0.70; OR = 0.37, 95% CI: 0.16 to 0.87; OR = 0.40, 95% CI: 0.18 to 0.84, respectively). PPF and OND had the lower incidence of PONV compared to the placebo group (OR = 0.07, 95% CI: 0.01 to 0.30; and OR = 0.12, 95% CI: 0.02 to 0.63). No significant difference in other outcomes was found among different therapies. Conclusions: Based on available data, PPF, OND, and AMP may have better efficacy in decreasing the incidence of PDPH compared to the placebo group. No significant side effects were revealed. To better guide microbial risk management and control, growth kinetic models of Salmonella with the coexistence of two other dominant background bacteria in pork were constructed. Sterilized pork cutlets were inoculated with a cocktail of Salmonella Derby (S. Derby), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa), and Escherichia coli (E. coli), and incubated at various temperatures (4–37 °C). The predictive growth models were developed based on the observed growth data. By comparing R2 of primary models, Baranyi models were preferred to fit the growth curves of S. Derby and P. aeruginosa, while the Huang model was preferred for E. coli (all R2 ≥ 0.997). The secondary Ratkowsky square root model can well describe the relationship between temperature and μmax (all R2 ≥ 0.97) or Lag (all R2 ≥ 0.98). Growth models were validated by the actual test values, with Bf and Af close to 1, and MSE around 0.001. The time for S. Derby to reach a pathogenic dose (105 CFU/g) at each temperature in pork was predicted accordingly and found to be earlier than the time when the pork began to be judged nearly fresh according to the sensory indicators. In this communication, two polarization selective partial reflective decoupling layers (PRDLs) are utilized to mitigate at least two kinds of mutual couplings between two closely spaced dual-polarized dipole antennas. The PRDL is a large-scale model of an actual dielectric board, obtained by arranging a large number of identical conducting obstacles in a regular two-dimensional pattern. The two PRDLs are designed at proper distances from the antenna aperture with well-engineered dielectric constants for two preset polarizations. Each layer is selective to only one polarization by appropriately designing the dimension of the unit cells. Consequently, the two dominant couplings between the two dual-polarized antennas are reduced significantly. The measured isolation between all ports of the two antennas are increased to more than 21 dB, while their reflection coefficients can still maintain in satisfactory status. The radiation patterns, total efficiencies, and envelop correlation coefficients of the proposed antenna, as well as its counterpart without any decoupling measures, are also obtained through measurement, showing significant and reasonable improvements, which further indicates that it has great potential to be extended and applied to 5G MIMO arrays in both base stations and wireless routers. Background: Various methods are used for cervical ripening during the induction of labor. Mechanical and pharmacological methods are commonly used for cervical ripening. A double-balloon catheter was specifically developed to ripen the cervix and induce labor; however, the efficacy of the double-balloon catheter in cervical ripening compared to other methods is unknown.Methods: We searched five databases and performed a Bayesian network meta-analysis. Six interventions (double-balloon catheter, Foley catheter, oral misoprostol, vaginal misoprostol, dinoprostone, and double-balloon catheter combined with oral misoprostol) were included in the search. The primary outcomes were cesarean delivery rate and time from intervention-to-birth. The secondary outcomes were as follows: Bishop score increment; achieving a vaginal delivery within 24 h; uterine hyperstimulation with fetal heart rate changes; need for oxytocin augmentation; instrumental delivery; meconium staining; chorioamnionitis; postpartum hemorrhage; low Apgar score; neonatal intensive care unit admission; and arterial pH.Results: Forty-eight randomized controlled trials involving 11,482 pregnant women were identified. The cesarean delivery rates of the cervical ripening with a double-balloon catheter and oral misoprostol, oral misoprostol, and vaginal misoprostol were significantly lower than cervical ripening with a Foley catheter (OR = 0.48, 95% CI: 0.23-0.96; OR = 0.74, 95% CI: 0.58-0.93; and OR = 0.79, 95% CI: 0.64-0.97, respectively; all P < 0.05). The time from intervention-to-birth of vaginal misoprostol was significantly shorter than the other five cervical ripening methods. Vaginal misoprostol and oral misoprostol increased the risk of uterine hyperstimulation with fetal heart rate changes compared to a Foley catheter. A double-balloon catheter with or without oral misoprostol had similar outcomes, including uterine hyperstimulation with fetal heart rate changes compared to a Foley catheter.Conclusion: Double-balloon catheter did not show superiority when compared with other single method in primary and secondary outcomes of labor induction. The combination of double-balloon catheter with oral misoprostol was significantly reduced the rate of cesarean section compared to Foley catheter without increased risk of uterine hyperstimulation with fetal heart rate changes, which was shown in oral or vaginal misoprostol. Background: Labor and delivery complications, particularly pain, are important risk factors for postpartum depression (PPD). Neuraxial labor analgesia can effectively relieve labor pain; however, the association between neuraxial labor analgesia and PPD, if any, has not been established.Methods: PubMed, MEDLINE, EMBASE, ClinicalTrials.gov, and Cochrane Library were searched. The incidence of PPD was the primary outcome. The secondary outcome was the difference in postpartum Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale scores between the neuraxial labor analgesia and control groups. Subgroup analyses and post-hoc meta-regression were performed.Results: Nineteen studies with a total of 8758 parturients were identified. Neuraxial labor analgesia did not decrease PPD risk compared to the control group (OR = 0.84, 95% CI: 0.58-1.23); however, after being stratified by PPD prevalence, neuraxial labor analgesia decreased the risk for PPD in the high prevalence (>14%) subgroup (OR = 0.61, 95% CI: 0.39-0.94) and increased the risk for PPD in the low prevalence (<14%) subgroup (OR = 1.56, 95% CI: 1.16-2.10) compared to the control group. Meta-regression analysis showed that the association between neuraxial labor analgesia and PPD was influenced by PPD prevalence. There was no difference in the postpartum Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale scores between the neuraxial labor analgesia and control groups (WMD = -0.11, 95% CI: -0.56-0.34).Limitation: Heterogeneity and a limited number of randomized controlled trials may bias the interpretation of the results.Conclusion: Neuraxial labor analgesia had a protective effect when administered to parturients in the region with a high prevalence of PPD, but became a risk factor when administered to parturients in the region with a low prevalence of PPD. In this communication, a circularly polarized (CP) dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) based on quasi-self-complementary metasurface (MS) has been proposed. Due to the quasi-self-complementary characteristic of the proposed MS, the phase difference of the transmission coefficients between two orthogonal linear polarizations is 90° in the frequency band from 25.5 to 26.5 GHz. The DRA with the proposed MS can realize the transformation from linear polarization to circular polarization at 25.6–25.99 GHz. The proposed MS significantly increases the gain and CP bandwidth of the DRA. The working bandwidth of the proposed antenna is included in the New Radio FR2 frequency band totally, which is considered as the follow-up expansion frequency of fifth-generation (5G) communication. The proposed MS-based antenna has realized the linear-to-circular polarization transformation in millimeter frequency band without additional substrate, which has not been researched yet. This study aims to examine and explain the differences at city level in cumulative COVID-19 cases and time from first to last infection during the first 6 weeks of the epidemic in China. A quantitative study is conducted in China based on the multisource spatial data of 315 Chinese cities. Firstly, the spatial discrepancy of COVID-19 transmission was examined based on spatial autocorrelation analysis and hot pot analysis. Next, a comprehensive indicator framework was established by including a wide range of factors such as human mobility, geographical features, public health measures, and residents' awareness. Finally, multivariate regression models using these variables were constructed to identify the determinants of COVID-19 transmission. Significant spatial discrepancy of transmission was proved, and 10 determinants were identified. The transmission consequence (measured by the number of cumulative cases) was mostly correlated with the migration scale from Wuhan, followed by socioeconomic factors. Transmission duration (measured as the time from the first to last case within the city) was mostly determined by total migration scale and lockdown speed, which suggests that timely implementation of public health measures facilitated fast control of transmission. Residents' attention to COVID-19 was proved to be not only helpful for reducing confirmed cases, but also in favor of rapid transmission control. Altitude produced slight but significant effect on transmission duration. These conclusions are expected to provide decision support for the local governments of China and other jurisdictions. Highly reactive oxygen species (ROS) could lead to serious damage in living cells and are associated with many diseases like cancers. Metal cluster with strong fluorescence has great potential in biosensing and many thiolate ligands-protected clusters have been applied in ROS sensing. In this work, we synthesized levonorgestrel protected Au 10 cluster with specific sensing ability for highly ROS via crystal transformation from Au 8 cluster, demonstrating the significance of inner core structure on detecting performance. The detection limit of Au 10 cluster for ClO− could reach as low as 0.1 μM. This fluorescent probe not only achieving detection of exogenous ClO− in living cells and zebrafish, but also successful imaging of endogenous ClO− in HeLa and HepG2 cells. In comparison to previously reported cluster-based sensors for ROS, this work proposes a different reaction mechanism of metal nanoclusters for ROS detection (breakage of gold-alkynyl bond and oxidation of alkynyl group). This provides new directions for designing specific ROS probes and broadens the applications of metal clusters in disease diagnostics. A cross-region transfer learning method is proposed to identify community (e.g. car parks, public spaces and shopping centers) fire hazards based on text input provided by community members. The key component of the method, which also accounts for data imbalance, is an improved transfer component analysis that is embedded with a local discriminant analysis to transfer non-local rich knowledge to the fire hazard identification of local communities with an insufficient number of samples. In addition, a fire hazard knowledge map is established and applied to supplement the missing key features for fire hazard identification, and ontology modeling is applied to standardize the text features and reduce the effect of semantic ambiguity brought by cross-region knowledge transfer. The proposed method is verified based on the text data of nine fire hazard classes from Lanzhou and Beidaihe in China. Machine learning experiments show that fire hazard identification performance of all nine classes were improved with the overall accuracy, precision, recall, F1 score and AUC increased by 12%, 15%, 16%, 15% and 15%, respectively. Under data imbalance scenarios, the proposed method outperforms the state of the art methods, such as sampling-based methods, FastText and ULMFiT. The results also show that the proposed method can achieve desired performance with only half of the training samples. These findings illustrate that the proposed method can assist regions by improving fire identification results significantly through knowledge transfer. Background. The probability of liver cancer recurring in patients after surgery is a serious threat to liver cancer patients. Radiofrequency ablation is widely employed in liver cancer cases. We explored the therapeutic effects and influencing factors of radiofrequency ablation combined with hepatic artery intervention in patients with recurrence of primary liver cancer surgery. Methods. 90 patients with primary liver cancer postoperative recurrence admitted to our hospital from January 2014 to February 2017 were selected as the research objects. The patients were randomly divided into the control group (n = 45) and combined treatment group (n = 45). The combined treatment group received radiofrequency ablation combined with hepatic artery interventional therapy, and the control group received hepatic artery interventional therapy. The short-term efficacy, AFP levels before and after treatment, and long-term survival results of the two groups were compared. Single-factor and multifactor analyses of the clinical information of the combined treatment group were carried out to find out the factors affecting the therapeutic effect of radiofrequency ablation combined with hepatic artery intervention on patients with recurrence of primary liver cancer. Results. The total effective rate of short-term curative effect of the combined treatment group was higher than the control group, and there was a statistically significant difference existing (P < 0.05). After treatment, two groups of patients' AFP levels were greatly lower than before treatment, the AFP levels of the combined treatment group were significantly lower than the control group, and there was a statistically significant difference (P < 0.05). The survival rates of patients in the combined treatment group at the sixth month, the first year, and the second year after treatment were significantly higher than those of the control group, and there was a statistically significant difference (P < 0.05). The univariate results showed that, in the combined treatment group, there were statistically significant differences between the effective group and the ineffective group in tumor diameter, intact capsule, liver cirrhosis, intrahepatic spread, and tumor adjacent to large blood vessels (P < 0.05). The outcomes of multivariate analysis indicated that tumor diameter ≥ 3 cm, incomplete capsule, intrahepatic spread, and tumor adjacent to large blood vessels were risk factors for ineffective recurrence of patients with primary liver cancer after radiofrequency ablation combined with hepatic artery intervention (P < 0.05). Discussion. Tumor diameter ≥ 3 cm, incomplete capsule, intrahepatic spread, and tumor adjacent to large blood vessels are risk factors for the ineffectiveness of radiofrequency ablation combined with hepatic artery interventional therapy for patients with recurrence of primary liver cancer. It is necessary to increase the range of radiofrequency treatment, increase the temperature of the radiofrequency needle, and strengthen postoperative follow-up interventions based on the specific conditions of the patient's tumor. Radix Bupleuri, also named "Chaihu" in Chinese, is a substance derived from the dry roots of Bupleurum chinense DC. [Apiaceae] and Bupleurum scorzonerifolium Willd. [Apiaceae]. Radix Bupleuri was initially recorded as a medicinal herb in Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing, the earliest monograph concerning traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Ever since, Radix Bupleuri has been broadly used to alleviate exterior syndrome, disperse heat, modulate the liver-qi, and elevate yang-qi in TCM. Radix Bupleuri has also been utilized as an important component in Xiaoyaosan, a classical formula for relieving depression, which was originated from the famous Chinese medical book called "Tai Ping Hui Min He Ji Ju Fang" in Song Dynasty. Currently, many valuable pharmacological effects of Radix Bupleuri have been explored, such as antidepressant, neuroprotective activities, antiinflammation, anticancer, immunoregulation, etc. Former studies have illustrated that Saikosaponin A (SSa), one of the primary active components of Radix Bupleuri, possesses potential antidepressant properties. However, the underlying mechanisms still remain unknown. We used a chronic social defeat stress (CSDS) mouse model to explore the ameliorative effects and potential mechanisms of SSa in depressive disorder in vivo. The CSDS mouse model was established and mice underwent behavioral studies using assays such as the social interaction test (SIT), sucrose preference test (SPT), forced-swim test (FST), tail suspension test (TST), and open field test (OFT). Western blotting, immunofluorescence, and Golgi staining were performed to investigate signaling pathway activity, and alterations in synaptic spines in the hippocampus. To model the anticipated interaction between SSa and Tet1, molecular docking and microscale thermophoresis (MST) techniques were employed. Finally, sh-RNA Tet1 was employed for validation via lentiviral transfection in CSDS mice to confirm the requirement of Tet1 for SSA efficacy. SSa dramatically reduced depressed symptoms, boosted the expression of Tet1, Notch, DLL3, and BDNF, encouraged hippocampus development, and enhanced the dendritic spine density of hippocampal neurons. In contrast, Tet1 knockdown in CSDS mice dampened the beneficial effects of SSa on depressive symptoms. Therefore, our results suggest that SSa significantly activates the Tet1/Notch/DLL3 signaling pathways and promotes hippocampal neurogenesis to exert antidepressant effects in the CSDS mouse model in vivo. Proteolysis is the most significant primary ripening process in cheese, as it produces amino acids that serve as precursors for various flavor compounds. Therefore, the degree of proteolysis is an important indicator of cheese ripening. Here, the potential of nisin-permeabilized lactic acid bacteria as proteolysis accelerant during cheese ripening was explored. Both nisin-permeabilized Lactococcus lactis and Streptococcus thermophilus cells could hydrolyze peptidase substrates lysyl– p -nitroanilide (Lys– p NA) and glycyl–pro– p NA [Gly–Pro– p NA] efficiently. The overall proteolytic capacity of permeabilized cells depended on nisin concentration, strain used, temperature, and pH. The best candidate, S. thermophilus ST057-1, could hydrolyze 80% Lys– p NA and 94% Gly–Pro– p NA at 30 °C and pH 7 when treated with 5 μg/mL nisin. Permeabilized ST057-1 cells, when used as a starter adjunct, led to a significant increase in free amino acid content in model cheeses, up to 1.5 times that of the reference cheese, within 80 days of cheese ripening. Smoking is mainly sustained by nicotine dependence (ND), which varies across ethnic groups principally due to genetic as well as environmental factors. The Fagerström Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND) and biomarkers of tobacco exposure are two important approaches to assess ND. However, the relationship between ND and FTND of Chinese smokers has not been studied. The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between FTND scores and nicotine, cotinine, 3′-hydroxycotinine (3HC) and nicotine metabolite ratio (NMR, the concentration ratio of 3HC to cotinine) in Chinese smokers. FTND was carried out and general characteristics were collected using a self-administered smoking questionnaire with 289 smokers. Nicotine, cotinine and 3HC in urine were simultaneously determined by liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The concentrations of nicotine, cotinine and 3HC in the urine of smokers with a high FTND score were higher than in the urine of those with a low FTND score. There were significant correlations between urinary biomarker and FTND scores. Except for FTND item 2 (difficulty to refrain), the other items showed significant associations with the urinary biomarkers. No relationship was found between the nicotine metabolite ratio (NMR, 3′-hydroxycotinine/cotinine) and FTND scores or general characteristics of the participants. In conclusion, biomarkers of tobacco exposure levels are significantly associated with FTND scores. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have been validated as critical regulators in the development of melanoma. miR‐140 was abnormally downregulated in uveal melanoma samples. However, the expression level and roles of miR‐140‐5p remain unclear in melanoma for now. We speculate that miR‐140‐5p is abnormally expressed and may play an important role in melanoma. The expressions of miR‐140‐5p and SOX4 messenger RNA were determined by quantitative real‐time polymerase chain reaction assays. Western blot assays were employed to detect the expression levels of SOX4, Ki67, MMP‐2, MMP‐7, p‐β‐catenin, c‐Myc, cyclin D1, p65, and IκBα. Luciferase reporter assays were employed to elucidate the interaction between SOX4 and miR‐140‐5p. MTT (3‐(4,5‐dimethyl‐2‐thiazolyl)‐2,5‐diphenyl‐2H‐tetrazolium bromide) and transwell invasion assays were applied to evaluate capabilities of cell proliferation and invasion, respectively. Xenograft models of melanoma were established to verify the role and molecular basis of miR‐140‐5p. Immunohistochemical (IHC) assays were employed to measure the Ki67 and SOX4 at the protein level in xenografted melanoma tissues. Herein, these observations showed that, miR‐140‐5p was abnormally downregulated in melanoma tissues and cells, while SOX4 was upregulated. miR‐140‐5p directly targeted SOX4 and inhibited its expression in melanoma cells. miR‐140‐5p overexpression repressed melanoma cell proliferation and invasion and its effects were partially restored SOX4 overexpression. Moreover, miR‐140‐5p hindered melanoma growth in vivo by downregulating SOX4. Mechanistically, miR‐140‐5p suppressed activation of the Wnt/β‐catenin and NF‐κB pathways by targeting SOX4. Our study concluded that miR‐140‐5p hindered cell proliferation, invasion, and tumorigenesis by targeting SOX4 via inactivation of the Wnt/β‐catenin and NF‐κB signaling pathways in malignant melanoma, which provides an underlying molecular mechanism for the treatment for melanoma with miRNAs. To accelerate lactic acid metabolism, a mutant strain G6006 was isolated through adaptive laboratory evolution, which metabolized all lactic acid from AW two times faster than its parent strain. To eliminate galactose, a lactose-negative mutant of Lactococcus lactis that cannot produce lactate was generated. This strain was then co-cultured with G6006 to maximize the removal of both lactic acid and galactose. The microbially "filtered" AW could readily be spray dried into a stable lactose powder. Acquired resistance to classical chemotherapeutics such as docetaxel (DTX) remains a critical challenge in breast cancer (BCa) treatment. Epigenetic modification by microRNAs (miRNAs) has been shown to play a crucial role in cancer drug resistance. Previous study, using human drug-resistant BCa tissues, has identified miR-638 as one of the most down-regulated miRNAs, but its exact roles and underlying mechanisms during the pathogenesis of chemoresistance remain to be determined. In the current study, we found that miR-638 expression was significantly down-regulated in clinical DTX-resistant BCa tissues compared to that in DTX-sensitive BCa tissues. By using the previously established DTX-resistant MCF-7 cells (MCF-7/R), we also confirmed that chemoresistant cells displayed decreased levels of miR-638. To provide the direct functional evidence, we inhibited and overexpressed miR-638 in different cell lines. Thereby, the cells were rendered more resistant or susceptible to DTX treatment. Mechanistically, the lipid-binding protein STARD10 was identified as a miR-638 target mediating the DTX-resistance. Hence, we provide a molecular explanation for acquired resistance to DTX that is caused by the miR-638 deficiency and subsequent STARD10 upregulation. 2-Amino-9H-pyrido[2,3-b]indole (AαC), which has been reported to be 40–258 ng per cigarette, was regarded as a probable human carcinogen (Group 2B) and harmful composition in Hoffman list. Thus, it is of great significance to develop an effective method for the accurate identification of AαC and its metabolites. In the present study, we have investigated for the first time the in vivo and in vitro metabolites of AαC using ultra performance liquid chromatography combined with diode array detector and time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-DAD and UPLC-Q-TOF–MS/MS). A comparative study showed that the metabolic patterns of AαC in beagle, mouse, rat and human liver microsomes were of significant difference with these in rat urine. For the metabolism of AαC in liver microsomes, nine metabolites of AαC, including five hydroxy metabolites, two quinone metabolites and two N-dimer metabolites, have been found. However, metabolism of AαC in rats is a phase II process with complex enzyme catalysis, 23 metabolites including C - and N -oxidation, O - and N -glycosylation, O- and N -sulfonation, and N -acetylation were identified in rat urine. In addition, five new N -acetyl-AαC-OH metabolites were identified for the first time, indicating a possible new pathway for the metabolism. Background Spitz nevi, atypical Spitz tumors and spitzoid melanomas ('spitzoid lesions') represent controversial and poorly understood cutaneous melanocytic lesions that are difficult to diagnose histologically. It is unknown how these terms are used by pathologists. Methods We describe use of Spitz-related terminology using data from the Melanoma Pathology (M-Path) study database comprising pathologists' interpretations of biopsy slides, a nation-wide study evaluating practicing US pathologists' (N = 187) diagnoses of melanocytic lesions (8976 independent diagnostic assessments on 240 total test cases, with 1 slide per case). Results Most pathologists (90%) used the Spitz-related terminology. However, significant variation exists in which specific lesions were diagnosed as spitzoid and in the corresponding treatment recommendations. Recommendations ranged from 'no further treatment' to 'wide excision of 10 mm or greater' with no category capturing more than 50% of responses. For spitzoid melanoma diagnoses, 90% of pathologists recommended excision with ≥10 mm margin. Pathologists report less confidence in diagnosing these lesions compared with other melanocytic proliferations and are more likely to request second opinions and additional clinical information (all p < 0.05). Conclusions Spitzoid lesions are often not classified in any standardized way, evoke uncertainty in diagnosis by pathologists, and elicit variability in treatment recommendations. The effective assessment of power grid emergency response capability (PERC) is the most fundamental aspect in the emergency continuity plans for urban power grid protection. Existing PERC assessment methods assign PERC indicator values under specific disaster scenarios based on one-round expert scores. However, the emergency continuity plans are often continuous and consider diverse scenarios, which makes the assessment quite time-consuming and unrealistic given too many to consider. In this paper, a case-driven method is proposed to solve the assessment problem of PERC with multiple typhoon disaster scenarios while considering the past experience as a guide for real decision making. Firstly, in terms of hierarchical PERC indicator framework, the framework structure of power grid emergency cases is proposed to make case experience modeled and reusable. Secondly, a case scenario similarity algorithm is applied to select the PERC assessment rules (by mapping relations between response indicators and assessment results) that are most similar to the real scenarios. Then the rules are integrated while considering rule variety and case weights. Next, the hierarchical assessment results are obtained by integrating the confidence coefficient values and corresponding utility values. Finally, the method is verified based on the empirical data from Shenzhen, China. Jasmonates control many aspects of plant biological processes. They are important for regulating plant responses to various biotic and abiotic stresses, including drought, which is one of the most serious threats to sustainable agricultural production. However, little is known regarding how jasmonate ZIM-domain (JAZ) proteins mediate jasmonic acid signals to improve stress tolerance in cotton. This represents the first comprehensive comparative study of TIFY transcription factors in both diploid A, D and tetraploid AD cotton species. In this study, we identified 21 TIFY family members in the genome of Gossypium arboretum, 28 members from Gossypium raimondii and 50 TIFY genes in Gossypium hirsutum. The phylogenetic analyses indicated the TIFY gene family could be divided into the following four subfamilies: TIFY, PPD, ZML, and JAZ subfamilies. The cotton TIFY genes have expanded through tandem duplications and segmental duplications compared with other plant species. Gene expression profile revealed temporal and tissue specificities for TIFY genes under simulated drought conditions in Gossypium arboretum. The JAZ subfamily members were the most highly expressed genes, suggesting that they have a vital role in responses to drought stress. Over-expression of GaJAZ5 gene decreased water loss, stomatal openings, and the accumulation of HO in Arabidopsis thaliana. Additionally, the results of drought tolerance assays suggested that this subfamily might be involved in increasing drought tolerance. Our study provides new data regarding the genome-wide analysis of TIFY gene families and their important roles in drought tolerance in cotton species. Eggs continue to be significant in terms of the world economy and human nutrition. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of foodborne pathogens in a cross section of egg production types in China and to examine the virulence features of the isolated pathogens. Three hundred eggs from three provinces were tested for Salmonella, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Campylobacter. Two eggs were positive for Salmonella, one was positive for both E. coli and S. aureus, and none were positive for Campylobacter. When comparing different egg laying systems, there were no significant differences in findings between packaged and unpackaged eggs and between battery cage and cage-free eggs, but there were significant differences in the findings among pathogens and among provinces. Other potential foodborne pathogens were identified in addition to the targeted pathogens. The virulence of Serratia marcescens was higher than that of the isolated Salmonella Typhimurium, and the virulence of Staphylococcus saprophyticus was comparable to that of the isolated S. aureus. Bacterial smear-ripened cheeses are commonly contaminated with fungi and the potentially dangerous pathogen Listeria monocytogenes , which compromises food safety and quality. Here, we present new approach for accelerating smear development on these cheeses, while reducing growth of unwanted microorganisms. We grew the smear microorganism Brevibacterium linens in acid whey (AW) supplemented with a by-product of whey protein hydrolysate production (FCH). B. linens grew to a high cell density (10.27 log 10 CFU/mL), and alkalized the AW-FCH medium. We found that the fermented AW-FCH, with its high pH, rapidly killed L. monocytogenes and yeasts. When culture medium was smeared on the cheese surface, the surface pH was rapidly neutralized, and in just 7 days, the cheeses developed a dense orange color and growth of spoilage fungi was inhibited. Summing up, by growing B. linens to high cell density on low-value dairy byproducts, and applying dense suspensions onto cheeses, we can reduce the time needed for establishing the smear. Added benefits are increased food safety and less spoilage, as quick smear development inhibits growth of unwanted microorganisms on the rind. Lactococcus lactis, a lactic acid bacterium with a typical fermentative metabolism, can also use oxygen as an extracellular electron acceptor. Here we demonstrate, for the first time, that L. lactis blocked in NAD+ regeneration can use the alternative electron acceptor ferricyanide to support growth. By electrochemical analysis and characterization of strains carrying mutations in the respiratory chain, we pinpoint the essential role of the NADH dehydrogenase and 2‐amino‐3‐carboxy‐1,4‐naphtoquinone in extracellular electron transfer (EET) and uncover the underlying pathway systematically. Ferricyanide respiration has unexpected effects on L. lactis, e.g., we find that morphology is altered from the normal coccoid to a more rod shaped appearance, and that acid resistance is increased. Using adaptive laboratory evolution (ALE), we successfully enhance the capacity for EET. Whole‐genome sequencing reveals the underlying reason for the observed enhanced EET capacity to be a late‐stage blocking of menaquinone biosynthesis. The perspectives of the study are numerous, especially within food fermentation and microbiome engineering, where EET can help relieve oxidative stress, promote growth of oxygen sensitive microorganisms and play critical roles in shaping microbial communities. Backgrounds The diagnosis of melanoma can be challenging, especially in lesions for which the histopathologic criteria bridge two or more taxonomic categories. Newer genomic analytical methods of fluorescence in situ hybridization ( FISH) and comparative genomic hybridization ( CGH) have been introduced as ancillary techniques to differentiate benign and malignant melanocytic proliferations. Methods We evaluated how pathologists perceive and are incorporating these new cytogenetic testing technologies into their practices. We conducted a study of 207 U.S. pathologists who interpret melanocytic lesions in clinical practice in 10 SEER states. Pathologists were surveyed regarding perceptions and utilization of FISH and/or CGH in their clinical practices. Results Results showed that 38% of pathologists use FISH and/or CGH in interpreting melanocytic lesions. Pathologists reporting FISH and/or CGH use were significantly younger (p < 0.05), were fellowship trained or board certified in dermatopathology (p < 0.001) and were affiliated with an academic institute (p < 0.001). Pathologists reporting that their colleagues consider them an expert in the assessment of melanocytic lesions were more likely to employ FISH and/or CGH in their practices than non-experts. Conclusions Early users of cytogenetic testing technologies in cutaneous pathology are more likely to be younger, affiliated with an academic institution and fellowship trained or board certified in dermatopathology. 2-Amino-9H-pyrido[2,3-b]indole (AαC), which is present in high quantities in cigarette smoke and also in fried food, has been reported to be a probable human carcinogen. However, few studies have reported on the genotoxicity and oxidative stress induced by AαC. This study investigated the genotoxic effects of AαC in human hepatoma G2 (HepG2) and human lung alveolar epithelial (A549) cells using the comet assay. Significant increases in DNA fragment migration indicated that AαC causes serious DNA damage in HepG2 and A549 cells. The role of oxidative stress in the mechanism of AαC-induced genotoxicity was clarified by measuring the level of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), the GSH/GSSG ratio and the formation of 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), a marker of oxidative DNA damage. The results showed that the levels of ROS and 8-OHdG increased, whereas the GSH/GSSG ratio decreased. The concentration of 8-OHdG was positively related to DNA damage. Taken together, these results indicate that AαC can induce genotoxicity and oxidative stress and that AαC likely exerts genotoxicity in HepG2 and A549 cells through ROS-induced oxidative DNA damage. In this study, an in situ Al 2 O 3 particle-reinforced Al(Cu) matrix composite was successfully synthesized using a displacement reaction between Al and CuO powders. The powders were mixed at a weight ratio of 4:1 Al to CuO, cold-pressed and holding time at 900 °C for 1 h using varying heating rates. The effects of the heating rate on the microstructures of the composites were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), optical microscopy (MO), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS). The results indicate that all of the composites contain Al, Al 2 O 3 particles and Al 2 Cu phases. Although the heating rate does not significantly affect the phase compositions of the composites, it has a significant effect on their microstructures, most likely because it strongly influences the diffusion rates of the Cu and O atoms. As the heating rate is increased, the Al 2 O 3 particles become more dispersed, and they have a more uniform particle size distribution. Meanwhile, the Al 2 Cu structure transforms from the network (Al + Al 2 Cu) eutectic to the block-like Al 2 Cu phase. The ∼2 μm Al 2 O 3 particles and the block-like Al 2 Cu phase are distributed uniformly in the Al matrix when the sample is placed directly into a 900 °C furnace. Regional inequality of technology innovation associated with renewables may lead to insufficient innovation growth over the long-term, which impedes the deployment of renewable energy and slows down low-carbon transition. This paper aims to explore the major contributors to regional inequality of technology innovation in renewable energy by taking China as a representative example. Three groups of variables including regional attributes, supporting policies, and local official characteristics are proposed as potential explanatory factors. A set of panel data covering both the photovoltaic and wind energy sectors in 31 Chinese provinces from 2008 to 2017 are collected for the empirical study. Gini coefficient is used to quantify the inequalities of renewable technology innovation, while Shapley decomposition method is applied to evaluate the contribution of each significant factors. The results show that the overall Gini coefficients of photovoltaic and wind technology innovation in China are 0.65 and 0.62, respectively, indicating medium-level regional technology innovation inequality in both sectors. Knowledge stock (46.44%), R&D expenditure (36.56%), green fixed industrial investment (13.53%), electricity consumption (1.33%), and the energy-related experience of local officials (0.05%) are significant contributors to regional inequality of photovoltaic innovation. Knowledge stock (45.20%), R&D expenditure (37.90%), electricity consumption (8.63%), feed-in tariffs (1.02%), and the tenure of local officials (0.18%) are significant contributors to regional inequality of wind innovation. Using mixed method design, this paper explores whether and how expectation discrepancy affects food consumers' quality perception and purchase intentions under food safety risk situation. In the first phase, a qualitative study based on in-depth semi structured interviews (N = 15) was conducted. The interview results revealed that consumers in general responded negatively towards the existence of expectation discrepancies as it led to poor perceived food quality. It was further revealed that the discrepancy in expectation dimensions had a stronger effect on consumers' perceptions as compared to the discrepancy in expectation extent. In the second phase extensive online survey (N = 2172), it was confirmed that expectation discrepancy had significantly affected quality perceptions and purchase intentions. Moreover, perceived quality played a mediating role between expectation discrepancy and purchase intentions. In addition, expectation proportion (measured with the importance of specific food feature) was shown to strengthen (moderate) the impact of expectation discrepancy. Furthermore, the effects of expectation discrepancy were stronger for high-risk food (versus low risk food). This study aimed to investigate the dynamic expression of glial fibrillary acidic protein ( GFAP), a common neural factor, in cornea and stromal cells during herpes simplex virus-1 ( HSV-1) infection. For each anesthetized BALB/c mouse, the cornea in one eye was inoculated with 1 × 105 plaque forming unit (PFU) of HSV-1, while the contralateral cornea was mock-infected as the control. At different timepoints post-infection, corneal lesion examination by slit-lamp biomicroscopy, corneal histology and HSV-1 DNA detection by real-time PCR were performed to estimate the different stage of HSV-1 infection. The expression of GFAP was examined using real-time PCR, western blotting and immunofluorescence staining. After infected with HSV-1 for 15 days, the mouse corneas began to become clear, the corneal pathology recovered to normal, and HSV-1 DNA almost could not be detected, indicating that HSV-1 was entering a relative quiescent state from the acute infection. The expression of GFAP in HSV-1-infected corneas was comparatively low on day 3, increased slightly on day 7, and further increased thereafter, higher than that in mock-infected corneas on day 15. GFAP detection on the cellular level also indicated that the expression was downregulated in acute HSV-1 infection. GFAP was found to be downregulated in HSV-1 acute infection in cornea and upregulated in late stage, suggesting that GFAP might play some role during HSV-1 infection in cornea. Objective: To conduct a meta-analysis assessing the prevalence and trends of the abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) epidemic in general population. Method: Studies that reported prevalence rates of AAA from the general population were identified through MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science, and reference lists for the period between 1988 and 2013. Studies were included if they reported prevalence rates of AAA in general population from the community. In stratified analyses possible sources of bias, including areas difference, age, gender and diameter of aneurysms were examined. Publication bias was assessed with Egger's test method. Results: 56 studies were identified. The overall pooled prevalence of AAA was 4.8% (4.3%, 5.3%). Stratified analyses showed the following results, areas difference: America 2.2% (2.2%, 2.2%), Europe 2.5% (2.4%, 2.5%), Australia 6.7% (6.5%, 7.0%), Asia 0.5% (0.3%, 0.7%); gender difference: male 6.0% (5.3%, 6.7%), female 1.6% (1.2%, 1.9%); age difference: 55–64years 1.3% (1.2%, 1.5%), 65–74 years 2.8% (2.7%, 2.9%), 75–84 years1.2%(1.1%, 1.3%), ≥85years0.6% (0.4%, 0.7%); aortic diameters difference: 30–39 mm, 3.3% (2.8%, 3.9%), 40–49 mm,0.7% (0.4%,1.0%), ≥50 mm, 0.4% (0.3%, 0.5%). The prevalence of AAA has decreased in Europe from 1988 to 2013. Hypertension, smoking, coronary artery disease, dyslipidemia, respiratory disease, cerebrovascular disease, claudication and renal insufficiency were risk factors for AAA in Europe. Conclusion: AAA is common in general population. The prevalence of AAA is higher in Australia than America and Europe. The pooled prevalence in western countries is higher than the Asia. Abstract: A simple and sensitive method for simultaneous determination of 11 monohydroxylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (OH-PAHs) in human urines has been developed based on stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) and liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC–MS/MS). Factors that may influence the extraction efficiency, such as pH value of matrix, extraction time, desorption solvents and desorption time were optimized. Validation results showed that the method has high sensitivity (quantification limits of 1–3pg/mL), good reproducibility (RSD between 3.1 and 13.0%) and spiked recoveries (71.9–133.2%). The proposed method was also applied to analysis urines of smokers and nonsmokers, ten trace OH-PAHs were determined and compared between two groups. For the ease operation and satisfactory validiation results, SBSE coupled to HPLC–MS/MS may be an excellent alternative method for trace analysis of OH-PAHs in human urines. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Background: It was previously reported that propofol, an intravenously administered hypnotic and anesthetic agent, protects organs from ischemia–reperfusion (I/R) injury. However, the underlying mechanisms are largely unknown. Glycogen synthase kinase 3β (GSK-3β) is known to play an important role in the oxidative stress–induced apoptosis. In this study, we investigated the role of GSK-3β and mitochondrial permeability transition pore (MPTP) in the protective effects of propofol against hepatic I/R injury. Materials and methods: The left and median hepatic artery and the portal vein branches were blocked by no-damage artery clips to create the model of partial ischemia (70%), and liver lobes were subjected to warm ischemia for 30, 60, 90 min, respectively. Reperfusion of 120 min was then initiated by the removal of clamp. The MPTP opening was assessed by measuring mitochondrial large amplitude swelling and mitochondrial membrane potential. Results: Pretreatment with propofol in conditions of hepatic I/R inhibits the apoptosis of hepatocytes as evidenced by decreased terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling–positive cells. Importantly, propofol suppressed the mitochondrial GSK-3β by promoting or preserving its phosphorylation at Ser9, thus restraining the opening of MPTP and preventing the mitochondrial swell and mitochondrial membrane potential collapse. Conclusions: Propofol protects liver from I/R injury by sustaining the mitochondrial function, which is possibly involved with the modulation of MPTP and GSK-3β. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Three novel bio-based epoxy resins were synthesized based on natural flavonoids (daidzain, naringenin and luteolin). Maleic anhydride was used as curing agent. The effect of crosslink structure on mechanical properties, thermal stability and flame retardancy of bio-based epoxy resins was investigated. The results showed that the mechanical properties of bio-based epoxy resins were significantly better than that of di-glycidyl ether of bisphenol A, but the flame retardancy of bio-based epoxy resins was not significantly improved compared with di-glycidyl ether of bisphenol A. The cycloaddition reaction of benzopyrone ring is conducive to the formation of high crosslink density. The mechanical properties and thermal stability of bio-based epoxy resins increased with increasing crosslink density. The impact strength and initial thermal degradation temperature of cured daidzein epoxy resin which with the highest crosslink density were 0.86 kJ/m2 and 22 °C higher than that of di-glycidyl ether of bisphenol A, respectively. Abstract: Background: Remifentanil protects against ischemia/reperfusion (I/R)-induced organ injury, although its underlying mechanism remains elusive. This study was designed to examine the protective effect of remifentanil preconditioning, if any, against hepatic I/R injury in rats and the underlying mechanism involved. Materials and methods: Adult Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into sham operation (S group), ischemia/reperfusion (I/R group), and remifentanil preconditioning (R group) groups. Rats in the I/R group were subjected to a partial (70%) hepatic ischemia for 45 min, followed by 1 h, 3 h, and 6 h of reperfusion. Rats in the R group received venous injection of remifentanil (2 μg/kg/min) from 30 min prior to hepatic ischemia to the end of ischemia. Hepatic morphology and apoptosis were examined. Markers of liver damage, oxidative stress, and inflammation were evaluated. Mitochondrial function was assessed using mitochondrial membrane potential and appearance of mitochondrial swelling. Results: Compared with the S group, rats in the I/R group displayed a massive degenerative death in liver tissues and significantly enhanced cell apoptosis. Remifentanil preconditioning significantly reduced I/R-induced hepatocyte apoptosis. In addition, remifentanil protected against I/R-induced mitochondrial swelling and loss of membrane potential. Remifentanil preconditioning inhibited I/R-induced increases in tumor necrosis factor α, intercellular adhesion molecule 1, and nuclear factor κB p65 levels in liver tissues. Remifentanil preconditioning also inhibited the loss in superoxide dismutase and rise in malondialdehyde levels in liver tissues going through I/R injury. Conclusions: Our data revealed that remifentanil preconditioning may turn on multiple cellular pathways in hepatocytes to protect the liver from I/R injury by alleviating hepatic apoptosis. Abstract: Optimal seam finding is a popular panorama construction strategy. It has the advantage of constructing panorama rapidly as well as being memory efficient. However, it is intrinsically sensitive to radiometric distortions, which is why artifacts are often visible in the composed panorama. Besides, it requires users to specify weight parameters, making such algorithms difficult to configure. In this paper, by fully exploiting the camera model and utilizing the knowledge of tensor analysis, we propose a novel optimal seam finding method. It not only enables the creation of artifact-free panorama from distorted input images but also requires no user-specified weights. We verify the effectiveness of our method by testing it on variegated sets of images with different types of optical distortions. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Purpose: To evaluate the therapeutic effect of deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK) in patients with herpetic stromal keratitis (HSK). Methods: Forty-three eyes belonging to 42 patients with HSK, including 22 eyes in the active phase and 21 eyes in the quiescent phase, underwent DALK at the Shandong Eye Institute from January 2006 to December 2009. All patients with active disease had received intravenous acyclovir and amniotic membrane implants prior to DALK. Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) antigens from excised corneal buttons were detected by immunohistochemistry. Results: The follow-up ranged from 1 to 4 years (mean, 29.1 months). Graft rejection occurred in one eye (2.3%) and was reversed. Among the other 42 survived grafts (97.7%), 37 remained clear at the last visit. The best spectacle-corrected visual acuity was 20/200 or better in 95.2% of eyes and 20/40 or better in 38.1% of eyes. Six eyes (14.0%) developed recurrent HSK, one of which received a second keratoplasty due to ineffective antiviral medication. There were no significant differences in endothelial cell density between 6 months and 12 months after the surgery. By immunohistochemistry, HSV-1 antigens were observed in the stroma of 18 of 32 corneal buttons. Conclusions: DALK can not only remove the corneal lesions of HSK but also reduce latent or persistent viral loads in the cornea. In eyes with active or quiescent HSK but otherwise healthy endothelia, DALK seems to be safe and promising for its favorable visual outcome, graft survival rate, and low endothelial cell loss. Studies investigating the association between endothelial nitric oxide synthase ( eNOS) gene polymorphisms and preeclampsia reported contradictory or nonconclusive results. We performed a meta-analysis of 18 genetic association studies that examined the relationship between preeclampsia and the G894T, 4a/b and T-786C polymorphisms of the eNOS gene. Subgroup analysis by ethnicity and potential sources of heterogeneity and bias were explored. The MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Google Scholar databases were searched to access the relevant genetic association studies up to June 2011. For the allelic analysis of the G894T variant, all studies showed no significant association. For the genotypic analysis, the combined studies of the G allele showed negative significance (odds ratio [OR]=0.56; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.33-0.97), all the studies showed positively significance when the T allele was combined (OR=1.17; 95% CI: 1.01-1.36), and results were also positively significant in non-Asian populations (OR=1.20; 95% CI: 1.02-1.43). For the allelic analysis of the 4b/a variant, all studies showed no significant association, but results were negatively significant in non-Asian populations (OR=0.67; 95% CI: 0.46-0.98). For the genotype analysis, combined studies of the b allele showed negative significance (OR=0.55; 95% CI: 0.36-0.84). Moreover, non-Asian studies showed negatively significant results (OR=0.45; 95% CI: 0.28-0.72). For the analysis of the T-786C variant, none of the studies showed significant results. The synthesis of available evidence supports the fact that intron 4a allele, homozygosity for the 894T and intron 4a of eNOS are positively associated with preeclampsia. Large, multiethnic confirmatory, and well-designed studies are needed to determine the relation between preeclampsia and polymorphisms of the eNOS gene. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bacterial biofilm has been shown to play a role in delaying wound healing of chronic wounds, a major medical problem that results in significant health care burden. A reproducible animal model could be very valuable for studying the mechanism and management of chronic wounds. Our previous work showed that Pseudomonas aeruginosa ( PAO1) biofilm challenge on wounds in diabetic (db/db) mice significantly delayed wound healing. In this wound time course study, we further characterize the bacterial burden, delayed wound healing, and certain aspects of the host inflammatory response in the PAO1 biofilm-challenged db/db mouse model. PAO1 biofilms were transferred onto 2-day-old wounds created on the dorsal surface of db/db mice. Control wounds without biofilm challenge healed by 4 weeks, consistent with previous studies; none of the biofilm-challenged wounds healed by 4 weeks. Of the biofilm-challenged wounds, 64% healed by 6 weeks, and all of the biofilm-challenged wounds healed by 8 weeks. During the wound-healing process, P. aeruginosa was gradually cleared from the wounds while the presence of Staphylococcus aureus (part of the normal mouse skin flora) increased. Scabs from all unhealed wounds contained 107 P. aeruginosa, which was 100-fold higher than the counts isolated from wound beds (i.e., 99% of the P. aeruginosa was in the scab). Histology and genetic analysis showed proliferative epidermis, deficient vascularization, and increased inflammatory cytokines. Hypoxia inducible factor expression increased threefold in 4-week wounds. In summary, our study shows that biofilm-challenged wounds typically heal in approximately 6 weeks, at least 2 weeks longer than nonbiofilm-challenged normal wounds. These data suggest that this delayed wound healing model enables the in vivo study of bacterial biofilm responses to host defenses and the effects of biofilms on host wound healing pathways.
