In this paper, techniques to improve the collector’s dissipated power density threshold are discussed first. Then, theories of electron collection are presented, aiming at improving the effective electron-collecting area and collecting uniformity. Specifically, the layered electron beam collection in linear-taper collector, respectively, with constant and gradually varying magnetic field is modeled and discussed. Results indicate that a quasi-rectangular shape collection can be realized as the tangential collection dominates. The global bandgaps of photonic crystal are theoretically analyzed in this paper. The electromagnetic-wave propagation characteristics of photonic bandgap (PBG) structures, which is used in the the millimeter-wave, submillimeter-wave, and terahertz regime vacuum electronic devices and accelerators, were numerically simulated using the finite-element method software high-frequency structural simulator. The dispersion curves of the lattices in different rod radius to-rod spacing ratios and the global bandgaps for the general 2-D PBG structures formed by triangular and square arrays of metal rods were simulated. A mode map that shows the relationship between the structures and the contained modes was plotted and a 220-GHz metallic PBG resonator operating in TE \mathrm {\mathbf {04}} mode was designed for a gyrotron device to verify the theoretical and numerical simulations, and a comparison of mode density and quality factor between the PBG resonator and the equivalent cylindrical resonator has been carried out. A 40 A double-anode magnetron injection gun for a 1 MW, 110 GHz gyrotron has been designed. The preliminary design has been obtained by using some trade-off equations. The electron beam analysis has been performed by using the commercially available code EGUN and the in-house developed code MIGANS. The operating mode of the gyrotron is TE22,6 and it is operated in the fundamental harmonic. The electron beam with a low transverse velocity spread ( $$ \delta {\beta_{ \bot \max }} = 2.26\% $$) and the transverse-to-axial velocity ratio of the electron beam (α) = 1.37 is obtained. The simulated results of the MIG obtained with the EGUN code have been validated with another trajectory code TRAK. The results on the design output parameters obtained by both the codes are in good agreement. The sensitivity analysis has been carried out by changing the different gun parameters to decide the fabrication tolerance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents a study which designed a triode-type magnetron injection gun of a 42-gigahert, 200-kilowatt gyrotron for an Indian TOKAMAK system by applying the code EGUN. The gyrotron is an instrument that can produce high powers at very high frequencies. The estimations are carried out to calculate the parameters connected to the cathode, the magnetic field, and the modulating anode voltage. The study is accomplished with the validation of the design by utilizing another code TRAK.

In this paper, a synthesized design of the magnetron injection gun (MIG) for a 200 kW, 42 GHz gyrotron is presented. The synthesis steps involve the selection of the type of the MIG, the development of the design criteria, the selection of initial design parameters and the development of a program for the estimation of the synthesized parameters for the MIG design. The presented approach estimates the cathode, the beam and the anode parameters, enabling one to build a synthesis model of a complete MIG system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Resonators with gradual and step-like transitions are generally used in the gyro-oscillators and amplifiers. On the basis of the mode-matching technique, we have written the high-frequency structure analyzing program for the cold cavity of gyro-devices. The program provided an easy method for computing the resonant frequency and Q value in a complex cavity. The possible applications of high-power millimeter (mm) and sub-mm waves from free-electron masers (FEMs) and gyro-devices span a wide range of technologies. The plasma physics community has already taken advantage of recent advances in applying high-power mm waves generated by long pulse or continuous wave (CW) gyrotron oscillators and short pulse very high-power FEMs in the areas of RF-plasma production, heating, non-inductive current drive, plasma stabilization and active plasma diagnostics for magnetic confinement thermonuclear fusion research, such as electron cyclotron resonance heating (28–170 GHz), electron cyclotron current drive , collective Thomson scattering , microwave transmission and heat-wave propagation experiments. Continuously frequency tunable FEMs could widen these fields of applications. Another important application of CW gyrotrons is industrial materials processing, e.g. sintering of high-performance functional and structural nanostructured ceramics. Sub-mm wave sources are employed in high-frequency broadband electron paramagnetic resonance and other types of spectroscopy. Future applications which await the development of novel high-power FEM amplifiers and gyro-amplifiers include high-resolution radar ranging and imaging in atmospheric and planetary science as well as deep-space and specialized satellite communications and RF drivers for next-generation high-gradient linear accelerators (supercolliders). The present paper reviews the state-of-the-art and future prospects of these recent applications of gyro-devices and FEMs and compares their specific advantages. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
