The emergence of practice-based research networks (PBRN) has facilitated the execution of multifaceted community-based studies. As study complexity increases, so does the number of methodological barriers encountered. This paper's goal was to delineate methodological barriers and to evaluate the effectiveness of selected strategies and approaches developed and implemented in allowing a prospective, national PBRN cohort study to succeed in enrolling geographically dispersed mother/healthy term infant dyads ( n = 4300) on the day of post-partum discharge. Specific methodological barriers included: (1) obtaining multiple Institutional Review Board (IRB) approvals; (2) gathering longitudinal data from multiple individuals; (3) soliciting multiple perspectives on discharge decision making; and (4) bolstering minority enrolment. The most effective strategies and approaches we employed to address these methodological challenges were: (1) preparing and distributing the ‘IRB Packet’; (2) recruiting multiple practices covered by the same IRB; and (3) obtaining supplemental funding for increasing minority enrolment. We expect that other PBRN investigators can benefit from our experience and solutions in the successful conduct of this multifaceted community-based study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper reflects on conferences of the first five years of the International Academy of African Business and Development (IAABD: 2000-2004) focusing specifically on the conference proceedings. The papers presented at the five conferences and published in their proceedings were reviewed and analysed in terms of functional areas covered, the research methodologies employed, as well as the geographical spread and country focus of the authors. Background: We studied the type and frequency of differences between data presented in conference abstracts and subsequent published papers in the fields of infectious diseases and microbiology. Methods: We reviewed all abstracts from the first session of 7 of 15 major research categories presented in the 1999 and 2000 Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy. For each selected pair of abstract and related published paper, two independent investigators performed a detailed data comparison. Results: From 190 abstracts reviewed, 68 (36%) were subsequently published as full papers by March 2004. Fifty-two pairs referred to the same study population and period. Differences were found in 30 of 51 pairs, which were further analyzed (point estimate=59%, 95% C.I.: 45-73%). The identified differences were related to both the aims and conclusions of the study (3/30), the study conclusions only (2/30), numbers and/or rates of the studied patients (10/30), numbers or rates of microbiological isolates (9/30), MIC values or Ki values (5/30), other pharmacological properties of antibiotics (2/30), odds ratio (1/30), and duration of observation (1/30). Some differences were considered major. In bivariable associations, time to publication (from presentation in the conference to publication of the full paper) was associated with identifiable differences between the conference abstract and the full paper (OR=1.76, 95% CI 0.95-3.24/year of delay, P=0.07). Conclusions: It is reassuring that although we identified several reportable differences, only a very small proportion of studies exhibited differences in their aims and/or conclusions. The article presents the author's opinion on five selected technical reports which were discussed at the Photovoltaic Technical Conference held in Provence, France in 2011. These papers reportedly tackles low cost photovoltaic solutions to address the grid parity objectives crucial for competitive electricity produced by renewable energy sources. She comments that the solutions presented are key factors in the success of future photovoltaic technologies for consumer production of electricity.

The author offers information regarding the 60th anniversary of the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society. She also presents a brief discussion of the various topics discusses in the columns over the course of the year. There is a social responsiveness to the professional needs of members and communications in 1968 between the Society and the Chapters. From 1973 to 1986, membership declined and there is an examination of the benefits of memberships. The number and quality level of papers in 1983 was presented at the annual Symposium.

Information about the paper discussed at the educational forum on information management is presented. It states that papers are useful materials in handling important information and teachers must learn how to preserve those printed information. It encourages teachers to conserve information that arouse their interest for future utility.

The article presents a list of special events to be held in the year 1996-97. The "Judassohn Centenary Congress," organised by the European Society of Contact Dermatitis in conjunction with the American Contact Dermatitis Society, will be held from October 9-12, 1996, at the Kensington Town Hall Conference Center, London, England. The International Contact Dermatitis Research Group (ICDRG) wishes to encourage research by endowing a Niels Hjorth Prize. An original, unpublished paper is invited and the committee will select the winner.

This article focuses on all the papers submitted at the Third International Fructan Symposium held at the Utah State University Campus in Logan, USA, from July 21 to July 24, 1996. As for the previous symposium, all aspects of the physiology, biochemistry, chemistry and molecular biology of fructans in plants and micro-organisms were covered in a series of reviews and research presentations. On this occasion, however, only research papers were considered for publication by "The New Phytologist," resulting in a volume, which gives a comprehensive and detailed account of current research in this area.
