Purpose: Water retention capacity (WRC) is crucial for assessing the hydro-physical behavior of unsaturated soils. Dispersive soil, erodible and found mainly in arid regions, lacks sufficient WRC knowledge, hindering its stability evaluation in unsaturated state. This study aimed to explore the WRC of dispersive soil by measuring its matric suction (ψ) under coupling effects of dry density (ρd) and soluble salt content (η). Materials and method: Compacted specimens with different ρd and η were prepared. For each ρd-η case, six levels of soil mass water content were considered and the ψ was measured via filter paper method. Soil water characteristic curves (SWCCs) were fitted by van Genuchten model. Results and discussion: The WRC of dispersive soil enhances as ρd increases. Increasing η first weakens then strengthens the WRC, showing suction dependence. The air-entry value and residual state suction range within 0.95–17.8 kPa and 15.7–98.4 MPa, respectively. As for the air-entry value, increasing η from 0.3% to 2.0% decreases it from 36.0% to 58.7% when ρd increases, and its average growth rate changes from 174.5% to 265.3% when ρd exceeds 1.53 g/cm3. Increasing ρd reduces the average water loss rate of SWCC transition stage, while the impact of η is nonmonotonic, with an inflection point at 1.0%. Conclusions: The ρd and η influenced the WRC of dispersive soil individually and interactively. The effect of ρd links to the water release sequence from pores of different sizes, whereas that of η, rather complex and non-monotonic, relates to clay electrochemistry and salt phase. Aiming at the problem of long soil–water characteristic curve (SWCC) testing times and the difficulty of prediction accuracy in complex environments, this paper establishes a SWCC prediction model based on a neural network machine learning algorithm which can take into account the influence of multiple factors such as temperature, deformation, and salinity. The input layer of the model can reflect the physical properties of the soil and the influence of the external environment, while the suction is taken as an input variable, which in turn can directly obtain the water content under the corresponding conditions. The predictive ability of the model is verified by comparing and analyzing the predicted results of the SWCC under different temperature, void ratio, and salinity conditions with the experimental results. The research in this paper provides a new method for predicting the SWCC considering multiple factors, and the prediction accuracy of the model is related to the amount of experimental data. Currently, China's river water quality evaluation adopts the "Environmental Quality Standards for Surface Water", while the seawater quality evaluation uses the "Seawater Quality Standard". However, estuarine areas, where rivers meet the sea, do not have evaluation standards, and most often, the "Seawater Quality Standard" is applied. At present, the water quality in the estuary area sometimes exceeds the corresponding seawater quality standards, even though the quality of the surface water does not exceed surface water environmental quality standards and the quality of the seawater before mixing also meets the seawater quality standards. This paper proposes a dynamic evaluation standard based on the salinity of estuarine water and uses this standard to evaluate the water quality in estuaries, thus solving the abovementioned issue. The implementation of this method is simple and effective. Taking the Pearl River Estuary as an example, this paper introduces the dynamic standard evaluation method for water quality in the Pearl River Estuary. Compared to the existing seawater quality standards implemented in estuaries, this dynamic evaluation standard can assess the water quality in estuaries more accurately and provide a reference for water quality evaluation methods in estuaries. The thickness of the thin wetting film depends on disjoining pressure forces, and it evolves with pH evolution due to brine acidification at the physical and chemical conditions of geological carbon dioxide storage becoming thinner in response to dewetting. In the literature, molecular dynamic simulation (MDS) studies have been employed to understand the effect of pressure/capillary pressure on the thin wetting film evolution. In this paper, a theoretical approach based on the Frumkin–Derjaguin Equation (FDE), models of electric double layer repulsion, and van der Waals forces have been used for the calculation of the wetting film thickness. The approach excluded hydration forces contribution to disjoining pressure forces due partly to its poorly understood nature, and partly to the high salinity conditions encountered in geological carbon storage. Due to its promising global storage capacity compared to other lithologies, the carbon dioxide–brine–silica systems was chosen to simulate sandstone saline aquifers. The validation of the model benefited much from literature resources on data and a universal model of carbon dioxide–brine interfacial tension. Calculated results confirm pH-induced dewetting and they follow trends controlled by pH and pressure as found in the literature. The novelty of the paper can be seen from the fact that it has demonstrated a theoretical supplement to MDS studies in addition to justifying the fundamental utility and versatility of the FDE. Moreover, the paper links for the first time, a transcendental equation to the thin wetting film theory encountered in the carbon dioxide–solid–brine system found in geological carbon storage. Paper and pulp mills use a huge quantity of water in the manufacturing process and release a substantial quantity of salts in the effluent. The use of industrial effluents for irrigating crops due to the nutrient content in arid zones is under practice. The long-term use of paper and pulp mill effluent as a source of irrigation accumulates salts in the soil surface and rhizospheric zone. In this study, halophytes, namely Sesuvium portulacastrum, Salicornia brachiata, and Suaeda maritima were evaluated for their phytodesalination potential in paper and pulp mill effluent irrigated soil. Among these Sesuvium portulacastrum recorded the highest dry matter production (8.21 g pot-1), and the sodium accumulation was 6.7% greater than S. brachiata on 120th day. Furthermore, the soil EC was also 7.7 % lower in pots cultivated with S. portulacastrum than pots cultivated with S. brachiata. Hence, Sesuvium portulacastrum could effectively be used to phytodesalinate saline soils and ensure the sustainable cultivation of crops using paper and pulp mill effluent. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Saltwater intrusion is an essential problem in estuaries that can threaten the ecological environment, especially in high-salinity situations. Therefore in this paper, traditional multiple linear regression (MLR) and artificial neural network (ANN) modeling are applied to forecast overall and high salinity in the Lower Scheldt Estuary, Belgium. Mutual information (MI) and conditional mutual information (CMI) are used to select optimal driving forces (DFs), with the daily discharge (Q), daily water temperature (WT), and daily sea level (SL) selected as the main DFs. Next, we analyze whether applying a discrete wavelet transform (DWT) to remove the noise from the original time series improves the results. Here, the DWT is applied in Signal-hybrid (SH) and Within-hybrid (WH) frameworks. Both the MLR and ANN models demonstrate satisfactory performance in daily overall salinity simulation over the Scheldt Estuary. The relatively complex ANN models outperform MLR because of their capabilities of capturing complex interactions. Because the nonlinear relationship between salinity and DFs is variable at different locations, the performance of the MLR models in the midstream region is far inferior to that in the downstream region during spring and winter. The results reveal that the application of DWT enhances simulation of both overall and high salinity in this region, especially for the ANN model with the WH framework. With the effect of Q decline or SL rise, the salinity in the middle Scheldt Estuary increases more significantly, and the ANN models are more sensitive to these perturbations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Genetic and agronomic advances consistently lead to an annual increase in global barley yield. Since abiotic stresses (physical environmental factors that negatively affect plant growth) reduce barley yield, it is necessary to predict barley resistance. Artificial intelligence and machine learning (ML) models are new and powerful tools for predicting product resilience. Considering the research gap in the use of molecular markers in predicting abiotic stresses, this paper introduces a new approach called GenPhenML that combines molecular markers and phenotypic traits to predict the resistance of barley genotypes to drought and salinity stresses by ML models. GenPhenML uses feature selection algorithms to determine the most important molecular markers. It then identifies the best model that predicts atmospheric resistance with lower MAE, RMSE, and higher R2. The results showed that GenPhenML with a neural network model predicted the salinity stress resistance score with MAE, RMSE and R2 values of 0.1206, 0.0308 and 0.9995, respectively. Also, the NN model predicted drought stress scores with MAE, RMSE and R2 values of 0.0727, 0.0105 and 0.9999, respectively. The GenPhenML approach was also used to classify barley genotypes as resistant and stress-sensitive. Along with sea-level rise, one of the most detrimental effects of climate change, is salinity leakage, which significantly affects agricultural activities throughout most of the world. This occurrence is becoming increasingly dangerous. The purpose of this study was to use Geographical Information Systems (GIS) to assess the current situation of agricultural lands in the province of Al-Diwaniyah, by employing GIS to document the salt-affected sites and arrive at the most important criteria affecting those lands as well as build an application model for suitability to clarify the affected sites and come up with paper and digital maps. To accomplish this, the study relied on the available data by extrapolating and analyzing remote sensing images using salt equations to analyze the Landsat 8 satellite images, after which these data were subjected to spatial statistical treatment in ArcGIS software. Moreover, 20 samples were taken from ground sampling points and subjected to laboratory analysis to compare and document the results. The research resulted in the creation of an up-to-date database for the locations of salt ratio growth or decrease in the province of Al-Diwaniyah, which can be relied on, starting from and expanding in the future. Land maps, both paper and digital, have been created and can be used and inferred. The findings demonstrated the model's ability to steadily discriminate among all salinity groups while maintaining consistency with the ground truth data. Each of the four major salinity categories was highlighted. The best-performing indicators were used to build the MLR model, which was then used to anticipate soil salinity. The salt levels may be determined by the MLR combining NDVI and SI-5 with a high correlation value (R2 = 75.29%). Large‐scale seepage faces occur on tidal flats with gentle slope, which are widely distributed worldwide. Evaporation on these seepage faces, leading to salt retention and accumulation, may significantly impact the density‐dependent groundwater flow beneath the tidal flats. However, due to nonlinear complexities of the groundwater flow and solute transport on seepage faces, explicit boundary conditions and numerical models to quantify these processes are lacking. In this study, we present both mathematical and numerical models to quantify these processes. Compared to the results of our previous study, this paper shows that seepage‐face evaporation can (a) significantly increase the groundwater salinity in the upper intertidal zone, and form multiple groundwater circulation cells in the intertidal zone, (b) cause the disappearance of multiple seepage‐faces and reduce the spatial extent of seepage faces notably, (c) and intensify the groundwater and salt exchange as well as the seawater‐groundwater circulation through the intertidal zone. Plain Language Summary: Tidal flats with very gentle slopes are ubiquitously distributed around the world. Due to these minimal slopes, the intertidal zone can extend for several kilometers, leading to large‐scale seepage faces during ebb and low tides. Previous studies have shown that evaporation without seepage face causes salt retention and accumulation, which not only increases groundwater salinity significantly, but also alters the groundwater density and its subsurface pathways. However, explicit mathematical expression and associated numerical models to quantify the process of evaporation on seepage faces are lacking, due to the mathematically nonlinear complexities to deal with the density‐dependent groundwater flow and solute transport. Here, a new boundary condition considering evaporation on seepage faces as well as salt retention and accumulation was proposed. Compared with the seepage‐face boundary conditions of our previous study, we found that multiple seepage‐faces disappear and multiple groundwater circulation cells develop due to evaporation. Seepage‐face evaporation significantly increases the salinity in the upper intertidal zone, reduces the scale and existence of seepage faces, and promotes groundwater/salt exchange. This study systematically reveals the effects of seepage‐face with evaporation on the density‐dependent groundwater flows and salinity distributions in coastal aquifers, which have strong implications on biogeochemical processes within the intertidal zone. The current paper evaluated experimentally an innovative sun tracking concentrated solar still under Egyptian climatic conditions during the summer of 2022. The proposed system consists of a 120-cm-diameter parabolic reflector mirror that tracks the sun using a dual axis tracking system, a cylindrical solar still with a volume of 3.7 L positioned in its focal point, and a concentration ratio of 12.5. The performance of the concentrated solar still was investigated in the context of two critical parameters. First, three feed water salinity (17, 27, 37) ppt samples were evaluated, followed by four percentages of saline water filling ratio (26.5, 39.8, 53.1, 66.3)%. Increasing the salinity of the feed water had no effect on solar still productivity, but increasing the saline water filling ratio did. The daily cumulative productivity of the system was 6 kg/m2 with an optimal filling ratio of 53.1%, a daily efficiency of 42.88%, and an average cost of freshwater production of 0.0489 $/L. The proposed system also had the highest instantaneous efficiency of 61.77% and the highest distilled water productivity rate of 0.941 kg/h m2. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Salinity intrusion caused by a rise in the sea level has adversely affected water utilization along rivers. One solution adopted by government agencies is to assign an appropriate river flow rate by utilizing a floodgate operation. Current floodgate operations rely on historical water drainage and operator experience, which lacks flexibility to respond to a fluctuating water supply. This paper proposed a framework using real options analysis (ROA) to create strategic alternatives to support decision-makers (DMs) regarding floodgate operational scheduling. The sea level was used to estimate the salinity intrusion distance and as a decision criterion. Apart from raising or lowering the floodgate, the ROA strategy may recommend to the DMs that they "wait-&-see" for a substantial sea-level change in the future and apply the "operate-as-before" approach in certain instances. Subsurface drainage pipes covered with filters and geotextiles are the key to preventing clogging and ensuring efficient drainage. To improve the salt discharge efficiency of these subsurface drainage pipes, different layers of geotextiles were set outside the pipes with the aid of uniform gravel filters. This paper reports our findings from laboratory simulation of subsurface drainage pipes and experiments. The study examined the influence of different layers of geotextiles on the drainage efficiency, salt discharge effects of subsurface drainage pipes, and the effect of superimposed geotextiles on the salt drainage efficiency as well as the anti-clogging effect of subsurface drainage pipes. The results are as follows: (1) The geotextile and filter material wrapped around the subsurface pipe facilitated the movement of water towards the subsurface pipe, which could promote the salt discharge of the subsurface pipe. However, in the single leaching experiment, the reduction in soil pH was not significant for different scenarios. (2) The salt removal rate of the geotextile-wrapped subsurface pipes was more than 95%. The salt removal rate of the double-layer geotextile scenario was the highest (96.7%), and the total salt content of soil profiles was 8.3% and 31.3% lower than those of the single-layer and triple-layer geotextile scenarios, respectively. The drainage efficiency of the double-layer geotextile scenario was the highest, and the salt distribution in the 0–60 cm profile was relatively uniform, ranging from 2.3 to 3.0 g∙kg−1. (3) The clogging in the triple-layer geotextile scenario was caused by the geotextile, i.e., a dense filter cake layer formed on the surface of the geotextile. The clogging in the single-layer and double-layer geotextile scenarios was the clogging of the geotextile itself, i.e., soil particles retained in the fiber structure of geotextiles. (4) In the case of the single-layer and double-layer geotextile scenarios, the soil particles failed to completely clog the selected geotextiles, and there were still a large number of pores retained. The double-layer geotextiles integrate filtration, clogging prevention, and drainage promotion to provide the best salt drainage with the subsurface pipe. This study reveals the influence of the filter on soil water salt and salt discharge and provides a theoretical explanation and technical justification for the application of the subsurface pipes salt discharge technology in saline soil ameliorate. Sea level rise due to glacier melting caused by climate warming is a major global challenge, but the mechanism of the effect of salinity on soil carbon (C) mineralization in different land types is not clear. The pathways by which salinity indirectly affects soil carbon mineralization rates need to be investigated. Whether or not the response mode is consistent among different land-use types, as well as the intrinsic links and interactions between soil microbial resource limitation, environmental stress, microbial extracellular enzyme activity, and soil carbon mineralization, remain to be demonstrated. In this paper, three typical land-use types (wetland, forest, and agroforestry) were selected, and different salinity levels (0‰, 3‰, 6‰, and 32‰) were designed to conduct a 125-day laboratory incubation experiment to determine the soil CO2 release rate, soil physicochemical properties, and soil enzyme activities, and to correlate C mineralization with biotic and abiotic factors. A correlation analysis of soil physical and chemical properties, extracellular enzyme activities, and carbon mineralization rates was conducted to investigate their intrinsic linkages, and a multiple linear regression of C mineralization at different sites was performed to explore the variability of mineralization among different site types. Structural equation models were established in the pre- and post-incubation stages to study the pathways of soil C mineralization at different incubation times, and the mechanism of mineralization was further verified by enzyme stoichiometry. The results showed that, at the end of 125 days of incubation, the 32‰ salinity addition reduced the cumulative mineralization of forest and agroforestry types by 28.41% and 34.35%, respectively, compared to the 0‰ salinity addition. Soil C mineralization in the three different land-use types was highly correlated with the active C fractions of readily oxidizable C (ROC), dissolved organic C, and microbial biomass C (MBC) in the soil, with the standardized coefficients of multivariate linear regression reaching 0.67 for MBC in the wetland and −0.843 for ROC in the forest. Under long-term salinity additions, increased salinity would reduce the microbial respiratory quotient value by inhibiting β-glucosidase activity, thus indirectly affecting the rate of CO2 release. With added salinity, the mineralization of non-saline soil was more susceptible to the inhibitory effect of salinity, whereas the mineralization of salinized soil was more controlled by soil C pools. Hypersaline Hamelin Pool, with mean salinity >65, is located in Shark Bay, Western Australia. The high salinity has reduced its biodiversity, but it is home to a diverse assemblage of modern marine stromatolites. The limited exchange of water between Hamelin Pool and the rest of Shark Bay, due to the presence of the shallow Faure Sill together with high evaporation and low rainfall-runoff have resulted in a hypersaline environment. With climate-change-induced mean sea level rise (MSLR), hydrodynamic processes that maintain the hypersaline environment may be affected and are the focus of this paper. Oceanographic observations, together with hydrodynamic model results, were used to examine the hydrodynamic processes under present and future MSLR scenarios. A large attenuation in the tidal range, changes in the tidal characteristics, and current speeds together with a strong salinity gradient were observed across the Faure Sill under present-day conditions. Under an MSLR scenario of 1 m, the tidal amplitude decreased by up to 10% to the north, whilst to the south, the tidal range increased by up to 15%. Regions of strong vertical stratification were present on both sides of the Faure Sill. The simulations indicated that, under MSLR scenarios, these regions expanded in area and exhibited higher levels of vertical stratification. Rhizobacteria play a crucial role in plant growth and yield, stimulating primary production and improving stress resistance. Climate change has several consequences worldwide that affect arable land and agriculture. Studies on plant–soil–microorganism interactions to enhance plant productivity and/or resistance to abiotic stress may open new perspectives. This strategy aims to make agricultural‐relevant plant species able to complete their biological cycle in extreme soils with the help of inoculated or primed plant growth‐promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR).We provide an overview of the evolution of interest in PGPR research in the last 30 years through: (i) a quantitative search on the Scopus database; (ii) keyword frequencies and clustering analysis, and (iii) a keyword network and time‐gradient analysis.The review of scientific literature on PGPR highlighted an increase in publications in the last 15 years, and a specific time gradient on subtopics, such as abiotic stresses. The rise in PGPR as a keyword co‐occurring with salinity and drought stresses aligns with the growing number of papers from countries directly or partly affected by climate change.The study of PGPR, its features, and related applications will be a key challenge in the next decades, considering climate change effects on agriculture. Carbon capture, utilization and sequestration (CCUS) technology is considered an effective technology for reducing anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere. Saline aquifers are the most promising places for CO2 storage. However, field practice has demonstrated that salt precipitation near wellbores could lower reservoir permeability and result in a loss of CO2 injectivity. This paper reviews the research progress on salt precipitation during CO2 injection into saline aquifers. First, the mechanism of salt precipitation is studied in terms of the CO2 injection stage division and salt precipitation occurrence characteristics. Second, the current technical approaches for salt precipitation research are examined, encompassing numerical simulations, core tests and analytical solutions, and the accomplishments and advancements of these three methods are analyzed. The factors that govern salt precipitation, such as reservoir heterogeneity, salinity, injection rate, temperature, and wettability, are also analyzed. Eventually, the current state of CO2 storage in saline sandstone is presented, and a number of problems in salt precipitation research are identified. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To uncover the regulatory metabolism of poly-glutamic acid (PGA) in protecting wheat crops against salt stress (SS) at the physiological level, we utilised hydroponic experiments to explore the roles of PGA in regulating the photosynthetic performance, water physiology, antioxidant metabolism and ion homeostasis of wheat seedlings exposed to SS for 10 days. The findings demonstrated that SS inhibited the photosynthetic performance of wheat seedlings. In contrast, different doses of PGA all improved the photosynthetic performance, especially for 0.3% PGA. Compared with SS, 0.3% PGA plus SS decreased nonphotochemical quenching (qN) by 26.3% and respectively increased photosynthetic rate (Pn), soil and plant analyser development (SPAD) value, maximum photochemical efficiency of photosystem II (PSII) (Fv/Fm), photochemical quenching (qP) and actual photochemical efficiency of PSII (Y(II)) by 54.0, 27.8, 34.6, 42.4 and 25.8%. For water metabolism, SS destroyed the water balance of wheat seedlings. In contrast, different doses of PGA enhanced water balance, especially for 0.3% PGA. Compared with SS, 0.3% PGA plus SS decreased leaf water saturation deficit (LWSD) by 35.5% and respectively increased leaf relative water content (LRWC), transpiration rate (Tr), stomatal conductance (gs) and the contents of soluble sugars (SSS) and proline (Pro) by 15.9, 94.7, 37.5, 44.6 and 62.3%. For antioxidant metabolism, SS induced the peroxide damage to wheat seedlings. In contrast, different doses of PGA all mitigated the SS-induced peroxide damage, especially for 0.3% PGA. Compared with SS, 0.3% PGA plus SS respectively decreased superoxide anion (O2-), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and malondialdehyde (MDA) contents and electrolyte leakage (EL) by 39.1, 29.6, 46.2 and 36.3%, and respectively increased superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), glutathione reductase (GR), dehydroascorbate reductases (DHAR) and monodehydroascorbate reductase (MDHAR) activities, and antioxidants ascorbic acid (AsA) and glutathione (GSH) contents by 69.2, 49.2, 77.8, 80.6, 109.5, 121.7, 104.5, 63.8 and 39.6%. Besides, SS destroyed the ion homeostasis of wheat seedlings. In contrast, different doses of PGA all maintained ion homeostasis, especially for 0.3% PGA. Compared with SS, 0.3% PGA plus SS reduced Na+ content by 40.7% and respectively increased K+, Ca2+ and Mg2+ contents by 64.4, 82.6 and 105.6%, thereby respectively increasing K+/Na+, Ca2+/Na+ and Mg2+/Na+ ratios by 177.6, 209.4 and 244.8%. In the above ways, SS inhibited wheat height and biomass. In contrast, different doses of PGA all improved wheat height and biomass under SS, especially for 0.3% PGA. Compared with SS, 0.3% PGA plus SS, respectively, increased wheat height and biomass by 27.4% and 41.7%. In the above ways, PGA mitigated salt toxicity in wheat seedlings. Seed conditioning with ultraviolet light (UV-C) might (1) improve crop yield and quality, (2) reduce the use of agrochemicals during cultivation, and (3) increase plant survival in high salinity environments. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of UV-C conditioning of white oat seeds at two doses (0.85 and 3.42 kJ m−2) under salinity stress (100 mM NaCl). Seeds were sown on germination paper and kept in a germination chamber at 20°C. Germination and seedling growth parameters were evaluated after 5 and 10 days. Data demonstrated that excess salt reduced germination and initial growth of white oat seedlings. In all the variables analyzed, exposure of seeds to UV-C under salt stress exerted a positive effect compared to non-irradiated control. The attenuating influence of UV-C in germination was greater at 0.85 than at 3.42 kJ m−2. Thus, data indicate that conditioning white oat seeds in UV-C light produced greater tolerance to salt stress. These findings suggest that UV-C conditioning of white oat seeds may be considered as a simple and economical strategy to alleviate salt-induced stress. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The main purpose of the present research is to propose a comprehensive attitude of the salinity in groundwater resources of Iran using 116 papers in the assessment of groundwater quality in different areas of the country. The conducted study contains the measurement of the values of physicochemical parameters of which electrical conductivity (EC), as the fundamental parameter for salinity determination of groundwater, was considered mostly, and by comparing it with standards, as well as employing the Wilcox diagram, the quality of water was assessed for drinking and agricultural purposes, respectively. Study of the previous papers revealed that in only the west and northwest of the country, the groundwater quality was suitable for drinking, and in the majority of provinces, EC values exceeded the recommended limits. The highest EC level was seen in central provinces which led to the aggravation of groundwater and the largest proportion of salinity, putting the quality of water in an unsuitable class for drinking. Additionally, the assessment of groundwater quality for irrigation uses using the Wilcox diagram showed high and very high salinity rates in most areas of the study area. Northwestern provinces relatively had the lowest level putting in C3–S1 class, while central areas reached the highest with C4–S4 classification. Deficiency of rainfall, high rate of groundwater exploitation, and the intrusion of saltwater from Salt Lake were the principal reasons for groundwater deterioration in central parts of the study area. This study was conducted during 2019-2020 on the vegetative shoots of date palm Phoenix dactylifera L. cultivar 'Barhee', which were grown on MS salt media containing sodium chloride (0-25-50-100-150-200 mM) supplemented with 5% sucrose. Genetic variances were assessed using molecular markers RAPD using 8 random primers. The RAPD analysis did not result a polymorphism between the amplified bundles and the absence of genetic differences. The primer (OPE-19 and OPD-10) scored the lowest similarity rate 97%, while the genetic matching was 100% in the other primers. The morphological indicators recorded a significant and gradual decrease in the growth indicators (buds number, bud length and stem length) and a significant increase in (bud diameter and branches number) in the propagation and elongation stages. Also, the chemical growth indicators recorded an increase in the chemical content (abscisic acid and proline), the effect of Sodium chloride was negative on photosynthesis, as the chlorophyll content gradually decreased with increasing sodium chloride concentration. The increase in soil salinity has a negative effect on the growth and yield of plants. Mitigating the negative effects of soil salinity is therefore a difficult task and different methods are being used to overcome the negative effects of salt stress on crop plants. One of the often-used approaches is seed priming that can increase plants' vigor and resilience. In this paper, we tested the effects of hydropriming, proline priming, and salicylic acid priming on the mitigation of the negative effects of salt stress on two bell pepper varieties (Capsicum annuum L.): Herkules and Kurtovska kapija. Sweet bell pepper seeds were primed following desiccation to achieve the original water content, and subsequently cultivated in salt-supplemented medium. The positive effects on vigor (in the form of increased germination and seedling establishment) as well as on level of tolerance for salt stress were recorded for both cultivars. The positive effects varied between the priming treatments and pepper cultivar used. The results of germination, seedling performance, photosynthetic pigments, and osmolytes were measured for seedlings grown from unprimed and primed seeds with under 0, 25, and 50 mM of NaCl. Both cultivars demonstrated greater germination when primed with proline and salicylic acid, while the Herkules cultivar demonstrated a higher tolerance to salt when proline was used as the priming agent. Priming with salicylic acid and proline in the seed improved germination and seedling performance, which could be related to the increase in proline content in the seedlings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Salinity is one of the most common abiotic stress factors affecting different biochemical and physiological processes in plants, inhibiting plant growth, and greatly reducing productivity. During the last decade, silicon (Si) supplementation was intensively studied and now is proposed as one of the most convincing methods to improve plant tolerance to salt stress. In this review, we discuss recent papers investigating the role of Si in modulating molecular, biochemical, and physiological processes that are negatively affected by high salinity. Although multiple reports have demonstrated the beneficial effects of Si application in mitigating salt stress, the exact molecular mechanism underlying these effects is not yet well understood. In this review, we focus on the localisation of Si transporters and the mechanism of Si uptake, accumulation, and deposition to understand the role of Si in various relevant physiological processes. Further, we discuss the role of Si supplementation in antioxidant response, maintenance of photosynthesis efficiency, and production of osmoprotectants. Additionally, we highlight crosstalk of Si with other ions, lignin, and phytohormones. Studying soil composition is vital for agricultural and edaphology disciplines. Presently, colorimetry serves as a prevalent method for the on-site visual examination of soil characteristics. However, this technique necessitates the laboratory-based analysis of extracted soil fragments by skilled personnel, leading to substantial time and resource consumption. Contrastingly, sensor techniques effectively gather environmental data, though they mostly lack in situ studies. Despite this, sensors offer substantial on-site data generation potential in a non-invasive manner and can be included in wireless sensor networks. Therefore, the aim of the paper is to develop a low-cost red, green, and blue (RGB)-based sensor system capable of detecting changes in the composition of the soil. The proposed sensor system was found to be effective when the sample materials, including salt, sand, and nitro phosphate, were determined under eight different RGB lights. Statistical analyses showed that each material could be classified with significant differences based on specific light variations. The results from a discriminant analysis documented the 100% prediction accuracy of the system. In order to use the minimum number of colors, all the possible color combinations were evaluated. Consequently, a combination of six colors for salt and nitro phosphate successfully classified the materials, whereas all the eight colors were found to be effective for classifying sand samples. Temperature and salinity in marine data has been studied widely to enhance the marine environmental trend analysis. This work reports a new methodology for deriving high resolution monthly averages of temperature and salinity fields for the Berkeley Canyon based on the use of a support vector regression model. The data used in this paper is from WOA13, BOA Argo and ONC observations. The experimental results show that RBF Kernel function is satisfied with huge, complex marine data. The model is of great robust and adaptability. High resolution climatological means are critical for discerning oceanic features that are of great importance not just to climate systems but also to nutrient cycling and biological habitat. Plants experience diverse abiotic stresses, encompassing low or high temperature, drought, water logging and salinity. The challenge of maintaining worldwide crop cultivation and food sustenance becomes particularly serious due to drought and salinity stress. Sustainable agriculture has significant promise with the use of nano-biotechnology. Nanoparticles (NPs) have evolved into remarkable assets to improve agricultural productivity under the robust climate alteration and increasing drought and salinity stress severity. Drought and salinity stress adversely impact plant development, and physiological and metabolic pathways, leading to disturbances in cell membranes, antioxidant activities, photosynthetic system, and nutrient uptake. NPs protect the membrane and photosynthetic apparatus, enhance photosynthetic efficiency, optimize hormone and phenolic levels, boost nutrient intake and antioxidant activities, and regulate gene expression, thereby strengthening plant's resilience to drought and salinity stress. In this paper, we explored the classification of NPs and their biological effects, nanoparticle absorption, plant toxicity, the relationship between NPs and genetic engineering, their molecular pathways, impact of NPs in salinity and drought stress tolerance because the effects of NPs vary with size, shape, structure, and concentration. We emphasized several areas of research that need to be addressed in future investigations. This comprehensive review will be a valuable resource for upcoming researchers who wish to embrace nanotechnology as an environmentally friendly approach for enhancing drought and salinity tolerance. Background: Trees have developed a broad spectrum of molecular mechanisms to counteract oxidative stress. Secondary metabolites via phenolic compounds emblematized the hidden bridge among plant kingdom, human health, and oxidative stress. Although studies have demonstrated that abiotic stresses can increase the production of medicinal compounds in plants, research comparing the efficiency of these stresses still needs to be explored. Thus, the present research paper provided an exhaustive comparative metabolomic study in Dalbergia odorifera under salinity (ST) and waterlogging (WL). Results: High ST reduced D. odorifera's fresh biomass compared to WL. While WL only slightly affected leaf and vein size, ST had a significant negative impact. ST also caused more significant damage to water status and leaflet anatomy than WL. As a result, WL-treated seedlings exhibited better photosynthesis and an up-regulation of nonenzymatic pathways involved in scavenging reactive oxygen species. The metabolomic and physiological responses of D. odorifera under WL and salinity ST stress revealed an accumulation of secondary metabolites by the less aggressive stress (WL) to counterbalance the oxidative stress. Under WL, more metabolites were more regulated compared to ST. ST significantly altered the metabolite profile in D. odorifera leaflets, indicating its sensitivity to salinity. WL synthesized more metabolites involved in phenylpropanoid, flavone, flavonol, flavonoid, and isoflavonoid pathways than ST. Moreover, the down-regulation of L-phenylalanine correlated with increased p-coumarate, caffeate, and ferulate associated with better cell homeostasis and leaf anatomical indexes under WL. Conclusions: From a pharmacological and medicinal perspective, WL improved larger phenolics with therapeutic values compared to ST. Therefore, the data showed evidence of the crucial role of medical tree species' adaptability on ROS detoxification under environmental stresses that led to a significant accumulation of secondary metabolites with therapeutic value. Plants get exposed to multiple stresses throughout their phenological growth stages. At most, these stresses are attributed to single or combined stresses like salinity, water deficits, wounding, mineral deficiencies, potting bag size, soil/root media density and type, soil pH, and the type of production system employed. Multistress factors have been widely reported to reduce the plant growth and development, strength, yield, and quality of horticultural crops globally. In the literature, reports extensively recommended the use of silicon-based biostimulants to improve the growth and development of commercial horticultural plants; however, little has been reported in South Africa on the recovery response mechanisms of beetroot (Beta vulgaris L.), lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.), tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.), and kale (Brassica oleracea L.) grown under multi-stress conditions treated with silicon-based biostimulants, and using the cheaper eco-friendly production systems. In South Africa, most silicon-based biostimulant production companies reserve their novel concoctions as their company secrets; thus, many of the products are never tested in public to ascertain and monitor compliance with the Fertilizers, Farm Feeds, Agricultural Remedies, and Stock Remedies Act 36 of 1947 in South Africa. On the other hand, emerging farmers and smallholder growers are failing to afford existing agricultural insurance options, thereby affecting their yields against the commercially developed farmers. Although the government aids farmers, the assistance does not cover all costs associated with the multistress losses. Some farmers and growers adopted advanced production systems; however, at most, these systems are costly and rely primarily on electricity as a source of power, which is a challenge in South Africa. This paper explains various production systems used by commercial and emerging farmers, and the smallholder growers in South Africa to reduce costs related to multistress losses. Moreover, an alternative eco-organic production system that applies silicon-based biostimulant as a novel idea for commercial vegetables grown under extreme multi-stress conditions is recommended for emerging farmers and smallholder growers in South Africa. Future studies should be based on eco-friendly production systems in vegetable production in line with Sustainable Development Goals, to combat poverty and improve the livelihood of the African countries. Salinity is one of the greatest challenges of successful agricultural production worldwide. However, seed priming might be efficient practice for enhancing seed germination and initial plant growth and development. This experiment was undertaken with the aim of assessing the impact of different priming methods on seed quality parameters and early growth of garden pea (Pisum sativum L.) cultivars under salinity stress. Pea seeds of three different cultivars were primed with water (hydropriming), KNO3 solution (0.5%), and PEG 6000 solution (-0.5 MPa) for 24h in the dark. Unprimed and primed seeds were germinated between filter papers saturated with 120 mM NaCl using the germination test. The results clearly showed that the examined parameters of primed pea seeds were substantially greater than the parameters of unprimed seeds under saline stress. The upcoming Salinity Satellite, scheduled for launch in 2024, will feature the world's first phased array radar scatterometer. To validate its capability in measuring ocean surface backscatter coefficients, this paper conducts an in-depth analysis of the onboard verification flight test for the Salinity Satellite scatterometer. This paper provides a detailed introduction to the system design of the Salinity Satellite scatterometer, which utilizes phased array radar technology and digital beamforming techniques to achieve accurate measurements of sea surface scattering characteristics. The paper elaborates on the derivation of backscatter coefficients, system calibration, and phase amplitude correction for the phased array scatterometer. Furthermore, it describes the process of the onboard calibration flight test. By analyzing internal noise signals, onboard calibration signals, and external noise signals, the stability and reliability of the scatterometer system are validated. The experiment covers both land and ocean observations, with a particular focus on complex sea surface conditions in nearshore areas. Through the precise analysis of backscatter coefficients, the paper successfully distinguishes the different backscatter coefficient characteristics between ocean and land. The research results effectively demonstrate the feasibility of the Salinity Satellite scatterometer for measuring backscatter coefficients in a phased array configuration, as well as its outstanding performance in complex marine environments. Background: The experiment was conducted at the Faculty of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine, An-Najah National University, Palestine under growth chamber and greenhouse conditions. Methods: To study the effect of NaCl on germination, fifty seeds in each treatment for each cultivar were germinated on a filter paper in petri dishes moistened with the different NaCl concentration levels (0.0, 50 and 100 mM ). To study the effect of NaCl on plant growth and productivity, 2 seeds per variety were grown in 10 liter pots filled with peat moss-sand. Pots were irrigated with the different NaCl levels. Result: The tested chickpea cultivars showed different tolerance levels in response to NaCl stress levels. NaCl reduced final germination percentage (FGP) and germination index (GI). The highest plant height was obtained by Einalbeda (38.63 cm) in the control group, while the lowest one was found in Arij (28.25 cm) under 100 mM NaCl. NaCl did not affect root/shoot ratio in all genotypes. Reduction in fresh weight ranged between 25.6 and 74.2% under 50 and 100 mM NaCl. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present study first describes the variations in concentrations of 12 chemical elements in groundwater relative to salinity levels in Southern Quebec (Canada) groundwater systems, and then uses this data to develop an empirical predictive model for evaluating groundwater chemical composition relative to salinity levels. Data is drawn from a large groundwater chemistry database containing 2608 samples. Eight salinity classes were established from lowest to highest chloride (Cl) concentrations. Graphical analyses were applied to describe variations in major, minor, and trace element concentrations relative to salinity levels. Results show that the major elements were found to be dominant in the lower salinity classes, whereas Cl becomes dominant at the highest salinity classes. For each of the major elements, a transitional state was identified between domination of the major elements and domination of Cl. This transition occurred at a different level of salinity for each of the major elements. Except for Si, the minor elements Ba, B, and Sr generally increase relative to the increase of Cl. The highest Mn concentrations were found to be associated with only the highest levels of Cl, whereas F was observed to be more abundant than Mn. Based on this analysis of the data, a correlation table was established between salinity level and concentrations of the chemical constituents. We thus propose a predictive empirical model, identifying a profile of the chemical composition of groundwater relative to salinity levels, to help homeowners and groundwater managers evaluate groundwater quality before resorting to laborious and costly laboratory analyses. In their recent paper, Williams et al. (2022) evaluated salinity management in the Murray-Darling Basin (MDB) as 'unsustainable', and a risk to water availability and quality in the Basin. However, this evaluation was weakened first by a failure to analyse the Basin salinity strategies of the last thirty-five years, noting that these have led to Basin salinity target being met since 2010; and second to not providing Basin-specific data to support their evaluation. Contrary to Williams et al. comments, existing evidence indicates that infrastructure intended to improve water use efficiency (e.g. salt leaching, salt disposal basins) will generally reduce stream salinity. The requirement for a leaching efficiency means that there is a lower limit to water use efficiency improvements, but this is unlikely itself to be a major risk. We agree that the changes that have occurred over the last twenty years would warrant a review of salt storage options in the MDB that better matches future needs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Soil salinization is one of the most widespread soil degradation processes, especially in arid and semi-arid regions. In such climatic conditions, soluble salts accumulate in the soil, leading to deterioration in soil properties and ultimately reduced crop yield. The purpose of this study was to analyse the relationship between the level of soil salinity and the main spectral indicators obtained from Landsat satellite data. The studied area was the Maisky district, which is located in the southeastern part of the Pavlodar region of Kazakhstan. The variants of the research were agricultural lands using sprinkler irrigation and flood irrigation, as well as sites without irrigation. To analyse the relationships, we used the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), salinity indices (SI) and soil indices such as SI 1, SI 2, SI 3, SI 4, normalized difference salinity index (NDSI), soil adjusted vegetation index (SAVI), and brightness index (BI). The normalized difference salinity index (R-NIR)/(R + NIR), using a quadratic statistical relationship, showed the best correlation with the laboratory data. The vegetation index NDVI showed the weakest correlation due to dryness or poor crop growth. As a result of the lack of clear control over irrigation and agrotechnical measures, the indicators of cation exchange capacity in irrigated plots using the flooding method were higher than in other irrigation methods. During irrigation, it is necessary to ensure clear rules, according to which the supplied water and fertilizers will have a positive effect on the soil and the entire agroecosystem. Previous studies suggested that tropical sea surface salinity (SSS) can influence tropical Pacific sea surface temperature (SST) through mixing and entrainment and thus it may be a signal for El Niño‐Southern Oscillation (ENSO) prediction. This paper explores the influence of SSS on ENSO spring predictability barrier (SPB) using an empirical dynamic model ‐ Linear Inverse Model (LIM). By coupling and decoupling SSS in the LIM, we find that tropical Pacific SSS plays a significant role in weakening both Central‐Pacific and Eastern‐Pacific ENSO SPB. The evolution of optimal initial structure also shows the importance of SSS dynamics in ENSO. We found an SSS mode that plays the dominant role in SSS impacting ENSO prediction. By the analysis of lead‐lag correlation, we find that this mode can induce easterlies during the spring, which finally leads to a La Niña‐like SST pattern in the winter through zonal advective and thermocline feedbacks. Plain Language Summary: The spring predictability barrier (SPB) is a phenomenon of forecast skill reduction of the El Niño‐Southern Oscillation (ENSO) when it comes to the boreal spring, regardless of the initial month. Sea surface salinity (SSS) can influence sea surface temperature by altering sea surface density and thus it may be a signal for ENSO prediction. Using a linear dynamical model, we find that SSS plays an important role in improving the forecast skill of ENSO and weakening SPB. We further find that SSS can induce the easterlies during the spring, which finally leads to a La Niña‐like SST pattern. Our study suggests that SSS can be used to predict ENSO about 1 year later. Summer visits to coastal sea destinations are the most represented in world tourism, accounting for 55% of global tourist travel. A seaside vacation is a form of relaxation and recreation with numerous benefits for a person's psychological, physical, and mental health. Sea water and air rich in marine minerals have a profound effect on the human psyche and provide a pleasant holiday in relation to oceanographic motifs as the main tourist attractions during the summer season. This paper explores the key tourism attributes of seawater from the perspectives of sea recreational tourism and humans' health and comfort. Chemical composition, temperature, salinity, dynamics, and water purity have been identified as major attractiveness factors (elements) for planning healthy sea activities and the swimming tourist season at coastal destinations. It was found that tropical and subtropical coastal regions are mostly touristically significant, while coastal desert regions are gaining significant popularity. The study's findings are educational and applicable to the tourist valorisation and tourism planning of the seas, as well as for understanding the new trends in global sea tourism. Both natural and anthropogenic processes can lead to the increasing salinity of surface waters. The knowledge about the ecological consequences of salinization on the biota is limited especially in case of microbiota, like diatoms. We collected the existing knowledge about the relationship between salinity and diatoms in fresh and saline waters. Based on the available papers, conductivity and ion composition are the most important variables shaping diatom communities. Secondary salinization can mask regional differences in diatom assemblages. Trait-based analyses highlight the competitive advantages of motile guild and the extreme trait categories in these environments. The increasing conductivity along a wide conductivity scale decreases the alpha-diversity. Salinization induces the spread and invasion of marine and brackish species into inland freshwaters as well as that of freshwater species tolerating elevated conductivity and/or need specific ions. Concerning food webs, salinity can directly change diatom communities and the subsequent upper trophic levels but most likely this effect manifests as a top-down regulation. Applicable diatom indices are available to assess the level of salinization. Furthermore, diatom-inferred salinity reconstructions are widely applied to assess the past changes of salinity. This paper described an experimental study for treating salt containing wastewater with a bench-scale SBBR (sequencing batch biofilm reactor). By gradually increasing salinity of the wastewater, the activated sludge of high salt-tolerance was acclimatized, and the treatment test of simulated salt wastewater was carried out with wastewater samples of five sorts of salinity: 0 g/L, 8 g/L, 16 g/L, 24 g/L and 32 g/L. The experimental results showed that with the increase of salinity gradient, the efficiencies of removing NH4+-N, COD and TP decreased notably: in case where salinity was 32 g/L, and compared with salinity of 0 g/L, NH4+-N declined from 98% to 84%; COD from 98% to 73%; and TP from 97% to 47%. Additionally, the microbial activity, which was characterized by SOUR (specific consumption rate) and DHA (dehydrogenase activity) of biofilm, increased on condition of salinity being below 8 g/L, while decreased when salinity was up to greater than 8 g/L. Salinity made it possible to increase the content of extracellular polymer (EPS) in biofilms from 26.15 mg/g SS to 216.27 mg/g SS, among which polysaccharide (PS) content of TB-EPS grew most, and the increase of EPS could improve the resistance of microorganisms to salinity and the cells' protective effectiveness. It was found that under different salinity conditions there were growing three largest dominant phyla: actinomycetes, proteomycetes and patella bacteria in the biofilms, and the average relative abundance remained between 72% and 83%, among which the relative abundance of actinomycetes increased significantly with the increase of salinity, and the relative abundance of variant phylum decreased with the increase of salinity; the relative abundance of Kineosphaera, Micropruina and TM7a increased rapidly with the increase of salinity, and on the condition of salinity being up to 32 g/L, they became the three biggest dominant genera. To sum up, from the perspective of microbial community characteristics, the effects of increasing salinity on the structure and diversity of microbial communities were explored, the results could provide a theoretical basis for the further study on COD, NH4+-N and TP removal mechanisms of SBBR systems under high salinity stress. Common purslane (Portulaca oleracea) is a halophyte, consumed not only as an edible vegetable but also as a traditional medicine. This plant can adapt to extreme salinity and drought conditions and their effects on plant growth, yield and quality were elucidated, but the effects on seed germination was still unclear. Seed germination is an important stage for establishing P. oleracea seedlings that contribute to plant yield and productivity. Thus, the objective of the present study was to examine the individual effects of salinity and drought stress at different levels on the characteristics of seed germination, which the seeds suffered from −0.22, −0.45, −0.89, and −1.78 MPa osmotic stresses induced by polyethylene glycol (PEG), or from 50, 100, 200, and 400 mM NaCl stresses with equivalent osmotic pressures. The seeds sown in petri dishes containing filter paper layers that were flooded with NaCl or PEG-6000 solutions for the treatments and germination parameters were determined daily for 15 days. Data showed that germination percentage (GP), germination rate (GR), germination energy (GE), and mean germination time (MGT) were significantly decreased with increasing levels of salt and osmotic stresses, suggesting that the salinity and drought stress reduced the germination capability of seeds. Moreover, the seeds maintained germination with PEG osmotic pressure above −0.22 MPa, but not with NaCl concentration greater than 50 mM that induced a similar osmotic pressure, suggesting that the ion toxicity effect on the seed germination might be higher than the osmotic effects. Simple Summary: This paper provides a novel approach to integrating available environmental information into fishery data using gradient-dependent optimal interpolation. Comparative verifications of observations show that the constructed subsurface temperature and salinity profiles were very consistent with the in situ observations. The data assimilation method, named gradient-dependent optimal interpolation, gave refined matching results applied to represent the relationship between squid and environmental information. Our new method represents a useful tool in the deep research of fishery oceanography. A key issue in fishery forecasting is the collection of high-precision subsurface environmental data. A data assimilation method, named gradient-dependent optimal interpolation, was used to construct the near-real-time vertical temperature and salinity structure of a squid fishery ground based on Argo observations. The results were verified by truth-finding comparisons and applied to analyze the relationship between neon flying squid and the subsurface environment in the Kuroshio–Oyashio Confluence Region. The temperature and salinity differences between the constructed results and survey data were less than ±0.5 °C and ±0.02, respectively. Most of the relative analysis errors were less than the observational errors. Statistical analysis revealed that the most suitable temperature for squid was 18–24 °C at the near-surface (<5 m), although the squid can endure a temperature range from 11 to 12 °C at a depth of 300 m. There was an obvious thermocline in the fishery ground, with a thermocline depth of 65 m and a mean strength of approximately 0.10 °C/m. The regressive relationship between vertical temperature (thermocline parameters) and squid catch per unit effort (CPUE) followed the exponential (Gaussian) function. Low salinity Waterflooding (LSWF) is a proven EOR technique which has emerged in the last few decades. In this, the salinity of the injected water is reduced. Studies have unveiled that the LSWF can improve about 5–38% of oil recovery. This work aims to study the effectiveness of LSWF by modeling Sea waterflooding (SWF) and LSWF using a commercial reservoir simulator and justifying the proposed mechanisms responsible for the incremental oil recovery due to LSWF. A critical parametric study has been undertaken, which led us to conclude that LSWF is a cost-effective, and environment-friendly method that results in additional oil recovery for sandstone reservoirs. Azadirachta indica or neem is recognized for its unique properties, both against insects and in improving human health. However, proteomics studies of this plant's response to abiotic stresses have yet to be reported. Application of this technique highly depends on efficient and optimized sample preparation, in deriving highly reproducible proteomics data. The present study highlights the comparison of protein extraction method which effectively recovers proteins from recalcitrant phenolic-rich tissues of neem callus. Four protocols based on TCA-acetone or/and phenol extraction methods were compared. The TCA-acetone complemented with PVPP method was the most effective approach and generated the greatest total protein yields, spot number, good resolution, and spot intensities. Subsequently, the differential proteomics performed revealed that proteins associated with oxidoreduction, energy, transcriptional, stress response, respiration, and cell division were differentially regulated in salinity stress treatment. Meanwhile, the expression of proteins classified in the group of energy, photosynthesis, protein synthesis, oxidoreduction, and post-transcriptional regulation was altered in the JA-stressed callus. The accumulation of AZA was also noticeably reduced in salinity- and JA-treated callus, suggesting these tested stress parameters were not effective in improving AZA production in the neem callus. Overall, this analysis provides valuable information on the application of plant tissue culture as an alternative for sustainable production of major bioactive constituents in A. indica. Mangroves have unique adaptations that help them survive in highly saline and hypoxic environments. The present study examines how two mangrove species, namely Kandelia candel (L.) Druce and Rhizophora mucronata Lam., well known for their ultrafiltration capability, responded to different salinity levels. We have conducted histochemical, biochemical and gene expression analyses of lignin and cell wall components from the two non-salt-secreting mangrove species treated with different salinity gradients. Root length decreased at higher salinity treatments for K. candel (11.7–13.8 cm in freshwater; 5.7–6.7 cm at 20 ppt), while R. mucronata (4.9–6.4 cm in freshwater; 5.5–9.4 cm at 35 ppt) showed no significant change. The rate of lignin deposition near the vascular bundles varied from freshwater to salt treatments and between the species. Overall lignin content in the K. candel roots increased at higher salinity (40.6–70.6 µg/mg at freshwater to 53.9–145.1 µg/mg at 20 ppt). At the same time, R. mucronata showed comparatively higher lignin content (101.4–149.6 µg/mg) than K. candel (40.6–145.1 µg/mg). Total pectin concentration increased after 60 days in K. candel at freshwater (55.7–199.82 µg/mg) and salt treatments (90.0–210.5 µg/mg at 20 ppt). But pectin content decreased after 60 days of treatment in R. mucronata. A similar trend was observed for total carbohydrates and cellulose. Overall, hemicellulose concentration was low in R. mucronata compared to K. candel. Total polyphenol content was higher in R. mucronata (308.1–731.1 µg GAE/mg DW) than in K. candel (43.1–400.4 µg GAE/mg DW). Higher gene expression of lignin biosynthesis genes viz CAD, HCT, C3H, COMT and peroxidase was observed in R. mucronata at 5 ppt salinity 60 days after treatment. Agricultural land, water, and fertilizer utilization significantly impact the nutrient and water balances and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This study explores the impacts of agricultural water, land, and fertilizer management on the trade-offs between economic benefit, GHG emissions, and water, salinity, nitrate, and phosphate balances by employing crop growth, flow, and solute simulation models, linked with an optimization algorithm. The coupled models can simulate flow, crop growth, and nutrient transport, and capture the water and solutes interaction between the farmland soil zone and saturated groundwater zone, while considering spatial heterogeneity of soil, crop, fertilizer, and irrigation. The optimization model was used to find the trade-offs between the conflicting objectives of maximizing the net economic benefit and minimizing GHG emissions. The optimal water and land allocation schemes, fertilizer application, and crop type were obtained under wet, normal, and dry hydrological years. Then a simple rule was introduced based on the optimum results of the wet, normal and dry years. The proposed methodology was applied to the Dashteabbas irrigation network in southwest Iran. The results showed that the mass loading of salt, nitrate and phosphate decreases to water bodies by 7%, 37%, and 37%, respectively, and less land (−19%), water (−16%), and fertilizer (−35%) are exploited. Also, despite the lower net benefit of the optimum solution (12% lower than the current situation), the GHG emissions (28% lower than the current situation) would decrease, indicating that the introduced rule can help decision-makers to promote coordinated economic and environmental development in the agricultural irrigation systems. The Bay of Marseille (BoM), located in the northwestern Mediterranean Sea, is affected by various hydrodynamic processes (e.g., Rhône River intrusion and upwelling events) that result in a highly complex local carbonate system. In any complex environment, the use of models is advantageous since it allows us to identify the different environmental forcings, thereby facilitating a better understanding. By combining approaches from two biogeochemical ocean models and improving the formulation of total alkalinity, we develop a more realistic representation of the carbonate system variables at high temporal resolution, which enables us to study air–sea CO 2 fluxes and seawater p CO 2 variations more reliably. We apply this new formulation to two particular scenarios that are typical for the BoM: (i) summer upwelling and (ii) Rhône River intrusion events. In both scenarios, our model was able to correctly reproduce the observed patterns of p CO 2 variability. Summer upwelling events are typically associated with a p CO 2 decrease that mainly results from decreasing near-surface temperatures. Furthermore, Rhône River intrusion events are typically associated with a p CO 2 decrease, although, in this case, the p CO 2 decrease results from a decrease in salinity and an overall increase in total alkalinity. While we were able to correctly represent the daily range of air–sea CO 2 fluxes, the present configuration of Eco3M_MIX-CarbOx does not allow us to correctly reproduce the annual cycle of air–sea CO 2 fluxes observed in the area. This pattern directly impacts our estimates of the overall yearly air–sea CO 2 flux as, even if the model clearly identifies the bay as a CO 2 sink, its magnitude was underestimated, which may be an indication of the limitations inherent in dimensionless models for representing air–sea CO 2 fluxes.
