We extend the theoretical model of Antoniades (2015, Heterogeneous Firms, quality, and trade. Journal of International Economics, 95(2), 263–273) to analyze the impact of export demand shocks on the quality of multi‐product firms. Using Chinese micro‐data, we find that positive export demand shocks significantly promote the export quality of multi‐product firms, but the impact decreases as firm productivity increases. In addition to the scale effect and the competition effect, the intensified competition caused by the expansion of export demand will induce firms to skew their export sales towards the best performing products. The encouraging growth in volume and exports of palm-based finished products (PBFP) was directly related to an increase in their demand. It is thus important to investigate the factors influencing such demand. Our study attempts to elucidate this for the Malaysian PBFP in 10 major foreign markets, namely, Turkey, China, Iraq, Iran, Singapore, Romania, Australia, Pakistan, Russia, and Saudi Arabia. This study constitutes a panel data analysis for the 10 countries using data from 2007 to 2021 using the fully modified ordinary least squares (FMOLS) method. Pedroni and Westerlund cointegration test indicates the presence of a long-term relationship between the variables under study. The empirical results show that gross domestic product (GDP) has a long-term positive influence on the demand for PBFP, with every 1% increase in GDP will increase the demand for palm oil by 0.9%. In addition, population size (POP) also shows a positive sign and is statistically significant at the 1% level, indicating that a 1% increase in POP will lead to a 0.3% increase in PBFP demand. Substitute oil price also has a long-run positive influence where for every 1% increase in the price of both commodities will increase the demand for PBFP by 0.1%. Meanwhile the price of PBFP has a long-term positive influence on its demand. Thus, information regarding the factors influencing the demand for PBFP from our findings may help industry player and policymakers in formulating strategies to improve the markets, and academicians may also benefit from sharing the knowledge gained from the study. Do firms adjust wages in response to changes in their own demand level or to changes in competitive pressure from rival employers? We study how exporters adjust wages in response to unexpected product demand shocks during the 2008–9 Great Recession. Using rich data on Portuguese firms' pre-recession export shipments, we measure firm-level shocks to export demand during the Recession. We show that shocks constructed at the firm level are not necessarily firm-specific and can be decomposed into a common component affecting all producers in a product market and an idiosyncratic component affecting individual firms within markets based on the locations of their pre-recession customers. We demonstrate that while both components impact firms' output and their workers' wages, the common component spills over from firms to their labour market rivals, whereas the idiosyncratic component does not. We find that 10–15% of firms' idiosyncratic demand passes through to their employees' wage growth with no effect on retention rates, implying significant dependence of wages on noncompetitive quasi-rents. Moreover, we find that wages respond primarily to shifts in internal labour demand when labour markets are thin, but they respond more to competition from other employers when labour markets are fluid. These results indicate that employers' ability to set wages hinges on the underlying competitiveness of the labour market. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper a new model of short-term price levelling behaviour is introduced, for the case of variability arising from demand-side factors rather than supply-side factors. The key components are the direction of the information flow in the market, and the ability of value chain participants to adjust their demand for and supply of market services. The model is illustrated using data from the Papua New Guinea coffee industry. Almost all PNG coffee is exported to a wide range of countries. The industry has a competitive marketing structure with many active producers and buyers of various sizes. There is keen competition for the limited supply of coffee, but inefficiency in the pricing mechanism has long been a concern to many producers in the industry, in particular the smallholder coffee producers. They argue that increases in world coffee prices have not been fully passed on to growers, with exporters and processors able to hold their buying prices stable in the face of rising world market prices. In this study marketing margin analysis is used to investigate and test hypotheses related to price levelling, and in addition, the influence of marketing costs and throughput, on the aggregate industry margin, and the exporting margin and processing margin components. Average monthly price data over the period January 1999 to December 2010 are used. Using simple regression models, at the whole chain level short -run price levelling is confirmed and both aggregate costs and total volume of exports are significant determinants of the size of the margin. Short-run price levelling is also confirmed at both the exporting and processing stages, but in the preferred models, while throughput is an important determinant of exporter and processing margins, costs have a significant but negative effect on margins. We estimate export and import demand elasticities of Greece between 1995 and 2018 by establishing cointegrating relationships between exports or imports, income and the real effective exchange rate. When accounting for structural breaks in the series, we observe that the long‐run income elasticities of exports and imports are elastic and decline throughout the sample period. The structural component of the Greek trade growth decreases across time. The cyclical counterpart rises and exhibits high variation. Changes in the real effective exchange rate have the opposite than predicted effects on trade in the postcrisis period for exports and throughout the sample for imports. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The U.S. is the top producer, exporter, and consumer of tree nuts in the world. Tree nuts are a significant part of U.S. agricultural exports to the world. In 2019, the U.S. exported about USD 9.1 billion worth of tree nuts, just behind soybean exports at USD 18.7 billion. Tree nuts, such as almonds and pistachios, are mostly produced in the state of California. California produces 100% of U.S. commercial almonds. Globally, almonds are the leading U.S. tree nut export in both value and volume. Almonds are shipped to over 90 countries annually. This study aimed to investigate factors affecting the export demand function for U.S. almonds in major destination countries and evaluate the impact of the retaliatory trade tariffs policy by some of the importing countries on the U.S. almond exports. The currently available literature does not fully address these issues. We identified the top five almond export destinations, which were in Europe and Asia, namely, China/Hong Kong, Germany, India, Japan, and Spain, which account for more than 50% of U.S. almond imports. We used a double-log export demand equation that is well referenced in the literature and economic theory to identify the significant explanatory variables affecting the U.S. almonds export demand function. We also tried to estimate the impact of retaliatory tariffs on almond exports imposed by the major importing countries. Our results showed that U.S. almond and pistachio prices, real exchange rates, and gross domestic products of importing countries were significant factors that affected U.S. almond exports. The results showed that the imposed retaliatory tariffs had no negative effect on U.S. almond exports. This could have been because the study ended in 2019 and did not involve enough data to fully evaluate the impact of the retaliatory trade tariffs policy. U.S. almond exports have market concentration and strong market power in international markets. The efforts toward more sustainable production of almonds to solidify an already established market share in the world almond markets and against substitutes, such as pistachios, seem to be a sound strategy and focus of the U.S. almond agribusinesses and exporters. Purpose: This paper aims to investigate the determinants of bilateral exports of India to the USA by taking the non-linearity issue in export demand equations which is neglected so far in the empirical work. The study tries to know the reaction of change in exports to exchange rate changes in a non-liner fashion. For this purpose, non-linear autoregressive distributed lag (NARDL) bounds testing approach of Shin et al. (2011) has been used. This approach allows testing for non-linearities both in the short and long run, which might give indications of strategic pricing and non-linearities in exchange rate. The empirical analysis is carried out for bilateral export demand relationships of India with the USA for the period from January 1993 until December 2013. The overall results show that exports are determined in the long run by foreign demand, exchange rates and relative prices. The assumed linearity in export demand functions might be too restrictive. Thereby, the one threshold model that distinguishes exchange rate effects between appreciations and depreciations delivers plausible results. If exchange rate non-linearities are detected, it would seem that exports respond stronger to appreciations than to depreciations. A reason for this might be that firms perform strategic pricing in international trade to gain or maintain market shares. Design/methodology/approach: The paper uses the newly developed non-linear ARDL framework of Shin et al. (2011) to investigate whether there are non-linearities with respect to the exchange rate for India's exports to the USA. One of the important features of this framework is that it is free from unit root pre-testing and can be applied regardless of whether variables are I(0) or I(1). In addition, ARDL and NARDL technique efficiently determines the cointegrating relation in small sample. The short-run and long-run parameters with appropriate asymptotic inferences can be obtained by applying OLS to NARDL with an appropriate lag length. Following is the NARDL representation of equation 4(a) and 4(b). For brevity, this is illustrated for 4(a) only, where is the first difference operator, P is the drift component and it is the white noise residual, the coefficients ?_1 to ?_4 represent the long-run relationship, whereas remaining expressions with summation sign represent the short-term dynamics of the model. This equation nests the linear ARDL model presented in Pesarean et al. (2001) for the case of d_k^+=d_k^-and ?_2=?_3for all k. Thus, equation is less restrictive than a linear model. For this test, as its distribution is non-standard, Pesarean et al. (2001) tabulate the critical values. The bound test is used to examine the existence of the long-run relationship among the variables in the system. This test is based on Wald/F-statistic and follows a non-standard distribution. To check whether a cointegrating relationship exists, one has to test the null hypothesis ?_1=?_2=?_3=?_4 = 0 in the equation. Pesarean et al. (2001) provide two sets of critical values in which lower critical bound assumes that all the variables in the ARDL are I(0) and upper critical bound assumes I(1). The null hypothesis of cointegration is rejected if the calculated F-statistics is greater than the upper bound critical values. If the F-statistics is below than the lower critical bound, then null hypothesis cannot be rejected; this indicates no cointegration among the variables. If it lies within the lower and upper bounds, the result is inconclusive. After examining the cointegration, long-run coefficients are calculated by estimating the model with the appropriate lag orders based on the Schwarz Information Criteria (SIC). Further, the short-run dynamics of the model is also analyzed by using unrestricted error correction model based on the assumption made by Pesarean et al. (2001). Thus, the error correction version of the NARDL model pertaining to the central export equation can be expressed as: 10; 10, where ? is the speed of adjustment parameter, and EC is the residuals that are obtained from the estimated cointegration model of equation 4(a). The EC term is expressed as 10; 10, where are the OLS estimators obtained from the equation (5a). The coefficients of the lagged variables provide the short-run dynamics of the model covering the equilibrium path. The error correction coefficient () is expected to be less than zero, and its significant value implies the cointegration relation among the variables. Finally, various tests such as serial correlation, functional form, normality and heteroskedasticity have been conducted to check the performance of the model. Findings: Many empirical studies have estimated the elasticities of different final export demand components with respect to the exports because of their importance in trade policy formulation. But all the work has accounted only linearity in the exchange rate in export demand equation. Hence, in this paper, we tried to estimate non-linearities in export demand equation. The study fills the gap in the literature by improving on existing literature with the incorporation of the newly developed NARDL approach of Shin et al. (2011). This approach allows testing for non-linearities both in the short- and in the long run which might give indications of strategic pricing and non-linearities in exchange rate. The empirical analysis is carried out for bilateral export demand relationships of India with the USA for the period from January 1993 until December 2013. The bound test shows that there exists cointegration among the variables. Results show that exports are determined in the long run by foreign demand, exchange rates and relative prices. This paper analyses the significance and methods of foreign trade export forecasting. The index system of foreign trade export forecasting is determined based on the analysis of foreign trade export forecasting research results. The concepts and principles of artificial neural network and fuzzy system theory are expounded, and their respective advantages and disadvantages as well as their complementarities are analyzed. This paper introduces the types and training algorithms of evolutionary morphological neural network, combines the neural network with the fuzzy system theory, and establishes the prediction model. Finally, the evolutionary morphological neural network model is applied to the prediction of foreign trade export in view of the characteristics of export and considering the influence of various factors, the whole process of establishing evolutionary morphological neural network forecasting model is introduced in detail, and the change range of export is predicted, and the ideal forecasting results are obtained. The main purpose of the paper is to econometrically assess the impact of the Risky Energy Export Demand index on economic growth in Azerbaijan. The study calculates the dynamics of the demand for energy exports over the past 20 years as an indicator of energy security. The least squares method, the ADF test, and the cointegration test were used to determine the cause- and- effect relationship between the Risky Energy Export Demand and economic growth. The main conclusion of the study is that the impact of Azerbaijan's Risky Energy Export Demand index on economic growth is positive, but not strong. This article reviews several hypotheses that aim at explaining the development of German merchandise exports. Based on cointegration estimation techniques, we examine different determinants for their ability to explain German exports during the period 1992–2016. The estimation results indicate that, in addition to the traditional determinants (world demand and price competitiveness), other determinants, such as energy prices and the increasing fragmentation of production processes, are also crucial in explaining German exports. This paper sets up a demand-supply model to analyse India's export performance (in terms of volumes rather than values) between 2000Q1–2014Q4. The main objective is to determine the impact of the financial meltdown of 2008 on India's export performance. During the meltdown period, decline in price by India's competitors in the international market resulted in (1) loss of competitiveness of India's export goods and (2) a complete breakdown of the price mechanism affecting India's export demand. Though export supply was not significantly affected by the meltdown episode we find evidence that exporting firms turned towards the domestic market to cope with the loss in export. The meltdown episode began to significantly affect India's export demand and supply equations from 2009Q3. The demand and supply equations after that period became so unstable that 'nothing worked' for India's exporters as they tried to counter the decline in export. Hence there was ample reason for them to panic and seek the government's help. Government policies aimed at boosting export demand did have a positive impact on India's export performance. Despite its importance in many decisions throughout agriculture, limited empirical work has quantified how changes in primary demand impact producers operating at different levels of vertically‐connected industries. A structural system of equations was estimated to quantify the impacts of U.S. retail and export beef demand on fed and feeder cattle demand and supply. Increases in retail and export demand positively impact both feeder and fed cattle producers. The estimated transmission elasticities suggest that shifts in retail and export demand, whether positive or negative, accrue proportionally more to feeder cattle producers than fed cattle producers. Using estimates from previous literature of the effect of generic advertising on beef demand, simulation results suggest feeder and fed cattle producers would benefit from increasing beef checkoff assessments from $1 to $2. Furthermore, an increase in export demand of more than 3.5% from observed values would cover aggregate costs of implementing source and age verification. While primary suppliers are often not directly involved in primary demand activities in vertically‐connected industries, this study highlights the key economic value for primary suppliers to support demand enhancing activities. This paper, using a rich dataset on Turkish firms for the 2005–2014 period, analyzes the relationship between firm-product sales in different markets to identify the channels that link exports and domestic sales. First, I use an instrumental variables strategy and establish that an exogenous 10% rise in exports increases a firm's domestic sales by 2.6% on average. Second, I do an analogous exercise at the firm-product level, and find coefficients that are almost twice as large, hinting to the importance of product-specific scale effects. Moreover, I propose a novel approach to isolate the production versus non-production factors that influence firm dynamics by focusing on non-produced (or carry-along trade, CAT) exports. I find that CAT exports also affect domestic sales positively, suggesting that spillovers at the firm level such as the easing of liquidity constraints play a role. In the process, I reveal that export demand shocks influence firms' expansion in terms of employment, wages, and investment. Finally, my quantification exercise indicates that export demand shocks explain about 1.4% of the annual variation in Turkish domestic sales on average. This figure, which shows heterogeneities at the sector level, rises to 4.6% during the Great Recession in 2009, when demand in Turkey's key export partners collapsed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study analyzes the persistency of total and disaggregated Turkish exports for different shock magnitudes using the quantile autoregression (QAR) method in line with Koenker and Xiao (J Am Stat Assoc 99:775-787, 2004). The results suggest that the persistence of shocks are not similar across different quantiles of Total Exports and disaggregated export sectors, indicating an asymmetry in the case of negative and positive shocks across different export sectors. The persistency behavior of Total Exports as well as Food and Beverages, Chemicals, Basic Metals, Raw Materials, Motor Vehicles and Radio & TV exports are asymmetric to negative versus positive shocks, which cannot be captured by traditional unit root tests. Thus, sound interpretation of QAR results is necessary for policy makers to identify shock characteristics and thereby pursue appropriate policies for overcoming adverse impacts on the economy. In this paper a non-linear model is applied, where suddenly strong spurts of exports occur when changes of the exchange rate go beyond a zone of inaction, which we call 'play' area-analogous to mechanical play. We implement an algorithm describing path-dependent play-hysteresis into a regression framework. The hysteretic impact of real exchange rates on Greek exports is estimated based on the period from 1995Q1 to 2014Q4. Looking at some of the main export partners of Greece, the euro area, Turkey and the US, and some of its most important tradeable sectors we identify significant hysteretic effects for a part of the Greek exports. We find that Greek export activity is characterized by 'bands of inaction' with respect to changes in the real exchange rate and calculate the further real depreciation needed to trigger a spurt in Greek exports. To check for robustness we (a) estimate Greek export equations for a limited sample excluding the recent financial crisis, (b) use export weight instead of deflated nominal exports as the dependent variable, (c) employ a political uncertainty variable as a determinant of the width of the area of weak reaction. Overall, we find that those specifications which take uncertainty into account display the best goodness of fit. This article uses a nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag (NADRL) model introduced by Shin, Yu, and Greenwood-Nimmo (2014) to assess the role that the exchange rate plays in shaping European agri-food exports after the introduction of the Euro. Although the 10 countries of this study share the same currency (and thus a single nominal exchange rate with the US), cross-country discrepancies of exports’ reactions to exchange rate changes are evident. Moreover, I find that exchange rate changes influence exports asymmetrically in the long run. Euro appreciations are harmful to a lesser extent than Euro depreciations are beneficial for European agri-food exports. The magnitude of this effect is country-specific and varies considerably between individual exporting countries. Exported quantities are less affected by exchange rate fluctuations than export values, which is in line with local currency price stabilization strategies of the exporters. This finding is interpreted as a sign of an incomplete exchange rate pass-through due to strategic (asymmetric) markup adjustments by firms with heterogeneous productivity. This investigation includes non-price factors such as patent applications and government and business characteristics into macroeconomic export demand functions because these determinants might also be relevant for international competitiveness. Results from panel cointegration as well as dynamic panel models for a sample of up to 27 countries from 1980-2011 show that conventional factors like the real effective exchange rate or foreign demand are important determinants of export demand. However, neglecting non-price factors such as patents which proxy innovativeness of a country or political stability which represents a solid business environment also affect export demand significantly positive. Thus, from a policy point of view, the focus on the exchange rate in order to remain competitive in international trade seems to be a too narrow perspective. Australia's resources boom is underpinned by increased demand from industrialising China and a rise in export prices. Current depletion rates will soon exhaust currently known reserves of iron ore and coal. This paper presents a dynamic optimisation model of a growing open economy where a social planner chooses the time path for depletion of a non-renewable resource during a demand-led resources boom. We find that for particular functional forms and in the absence of extraction and social costs, the optimal depletion rate equals the difference between the price elasticity of export demand times the world interest rate and growth in export demand. In contrast to the existing literature, we show that the optimal depletion rate is unaffected by a temporary increase in price, but reduced by growth in demand which is in turn sustained by offshore steel production and urbanisation. The main theoretical implication is that growth in export demand from China reduces the depletion rate. Australian iron ore exports, simulated using this theory, move together with actual volumes over the period 1995-2011, and the error between simulated and actual iron ore exports is lower for the model in this paper than it is for the model without growth in export demand. This paper focuses on export growth as an engine of growth and, by estimating India's export demand function, examines whether and to what extent India's export trend has been affected by external factors, particularly in the post-liberalization period. The empirical results indicate that all estimated coefficients are statistically significant with expected signs and that the absolute value of the coefficient is the largest for the world price, followed by world income and domestic income. Our results reveal that price competitiveness has improved India's export market. Moreover, the statistically significant world income elasticity suggests that the global economic boom may contribute to an increase in India's exports, whereas the global recession has likely had an adverse impact on the Indian economy through its trade channel. To ensure that export expansion becomes a stable contributor to economic growth, the Indian government should pursue ongoing diversification in exports in terms of both commodities and markets.
