A series of (un-)charged NHC derivatives bearing two pentadecyl chains in the backbone was studied in detail to find cooperative effects between the membrane and the NHC derivative. The tendency to show lipid-like behavior is dependent on the properties of the NHC derivative headgroup, which can be modified on demand. The surface activity was investigated by film balance measurements, epifluorescence microscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry. Additionally the cytotoxicity was evaluated against different cell lines such as eukaryotic tumor cell lines. Herein, we report a new visible-light-promoted strategy to access radical trifluoromethylthiolation reactions by combining halide and photoredox catalysis. This approach allows for the synthesis of vinyl-SCF3 compounds of relevance in pharmaceutical chemistry directly from alkenes under mild conditions with irradiation from household light sources. Furthermore, alkyl-SCF3-containing cyclic ketone and oxindole derivatives can be accessed by radical-polar crossover semi-pinacol and cyclization processes. A general and efficient methodology for the direct transition metal free trifluoromethylthiolation of a broad range of biologically relevant N-heteroarenes is reported employing abundant sodium chloride as the catalyst. We describe the thermal phase characteristics of a series of 4,5-bis(n-alkyl)azolium salts that were studied using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized-light optical microscopy (POM), and synchrotron-based small- to wide-angle X-ray scattering (SWAXS) measurements. Key results were obtained for 1,3-dimethyl-4,5-bis(n-undecyl)imidazolium iodide (1-11), 1,3-dimethyl-4,5-bis(n-pentadecyl)imidazolium iodide (1-15), and 1,2,3-trimethyl-4,5-bis(n-pentadecyl)imidazolium iodide (2), which were found to adopt enantiotropic smectic A mesophases. Liquid-crystalline mesophases were not observed for 1,3-dimethyl-4,5-bis(n-heptyl)imidazolium iodide (1-7), 3-methyl-4,5-bis(n-pentadecyl)thiazolium iodide (3), and 2-amino-4,5-bis(n-pentadecyl)imidazolium chloride (4). Installing substituents in the 4- and 5-positions of the imidazolium salts appears to increase melting points while lowering clearing points when compared to data reported for 1,3-disubstituted analogues. Use the head of differently (un‐)charged NHC derivatives with long alkyl chains in the backbone to modify their lipid‐like behavior. The inside cover picture illustrates the incorporation of the NHC derivatives into a membrane, leading to different effects according to the headgroup size. Small headgroups enable an integration and membrane rigidification, whereas bigger headgroups disrupt the membrane.
