Underwater pulsed spark discharge has been widely used in industrial fields as a source of shock waves or acoustic waves, and numerical modeling of the discharge and pressure wave characteristics is necessary to improve the application performance. In this paper, a numerical model is proposed that couples the circuit equation, the mass and energy conservation equations, and a momentum conservation equation based on the Rankine–Hugoniot conditions. A tabulated wide range equation of state and conductivity data of water are used, and various physical processes during the plasma channel expansion are considered, including the energy flow and mass exchange between the channel and the surrounding water due to thermal radiation, evaporation, and condensation. The model self-consistently solves the circuit current and voltage, the plasma channel parameters including composition, temperature, conductivity, pressure, etc., and the pressure profile at a certain distance from the discharge channel. The calculated results show good consistency with the experimental measurements, and three sets of experimental results from other literature are tested to further verify the applicability and effectiveness of the model. In this study, we introduce a theoretical model designed to explore both the photochemical and photothermal behavior of arc plasma radiation-induced ablation in gassing materials. We employ time-dependent density functional theory to analyze the photochemical behavior, while reactive force field molecular dynamics are used to explore the photothermal behavior. The phenomena, behavior and consequences of valence shell electronic excitation are analyzed in terms of ultraviolet (UV) absorption, electron-hole distribution, and Mayer bond order. Based on the photochemical findings, we apply a periodic electric field that corresponds to the vibration frequency of the permanent dipole moment to simulate infrared radiation, and convert UV photon energy into atomic kinetic energy to analyze UV radiation. This atomic-scale insight into photothermal behavior enables us to identify the final composition of ablation gases, including H2, CO, H2O, NH3, as well as specific cyanides, amines, and hydrocarbons. The results of the theoretical model and physical properties indicate that the concentration of hydrogen-containing gases in the ablation gas significantly affects the arc extinguishing capabilities of different polymers. Finally, we propose modification schemes suitable for polymers in power circuit breakers, considering UV absorption and smoke black production. The x-ray spectrum of a flash radiography source based on wire-shorted rod-pinch diode (RPD) is measured by an absorption spectrometer and calculated by the Geant4 Monte-Carlo code. The RPD is driven by a two-stage linear transformer driver (charging voltage ±45 kV per stage), which delivers ∼300 kA current within ∼200 ns on a short-circuit inductive load (∼30 nH). The spectrometer consists of LiF thermoluminescence dosimeters and metal filters of different materials and thicknesses, and the spectrum is reconstructed based on the Geant4 simulated dosimeter responses to various photon energies through different filters. The measured spectrum reaches an endpoint photon energy of ∼130 keV. The radiation characteristics of the RPD in the experiment are also modeled in Geant4 using measured voltage and current waveforms, and the results show an overestimation in photon number and endpoint energy (∼147 keV) compared to the measured spectrum, which indicates that during the bremsstrahlung process, the effective electron current is ∼27% of the total current, and the effective voltage is ∼12% lower than the directly reconstructed resistive voltage. A rough agreement is found between the spectra results and the non-relativistic Bethe–Heitler model with Sommerfeld correction; therefore, the analytic result can serve as an initial guess for spectrum reconstruction methods such as the perturbation method. We investigate the effects of specular reflection on the laser-induced breakdown (LIB) of copper, iron, and tungsten using fast photography and optical emission spectroscopy. The laser parameters include spot diameter ranging from 30.89 to 1589.33 μm, irradiance from 467.10 to 0.17 GW/cm2, with a single pulse of 6 ns duration and 21 mJ energy. As the laser spot defocuses, the plasma morphology changes from a single plasma near the target surface to a separated, independently evolving two-component plasma, and then to a single plasma suspended above. The defocusing distance for this transition is significantly influenced by specular reflectance. The separate plasma, comprising of a metallic component and an air component, occurs only under high specular reflectance conditions: ≥66.7% for copper, ≥51.4% for iron, and ≥44.9% for tungsten. The spectral emission of the metallic component initially increases and then decreases with reducing specular reflectance, due to a trade-off between enhanced surface absorption and reduced irradiance caused by surface roughening. LIB threshold irradiance increases with specular reflectance, rising from 0.31 to 1.22 GW/cm2 for copper, 0.24 to 0.70 GW/cm2 for iron, and 0.38 to 0.87 GW/cm2 for tungsten. These findings show the impact of sample pretreatment on LIB ignition and subsequent plasma evolution, offering insights into potential sources of inaccuracy in LIB applications. A rod pinch diode (RPD) is a feasible load configuration to generate a high-brightness, small-size hard x-ray radiation source. In this paper, the radiography performance of a wire-shorted low-impedance RPD on a compactly designed table-top driver (WRPD-1) is demonstrated for the first time. The driver consists of four high-power discharge branches connected in parallel, with each branch consisting of two metal-film capacitors and one multigap field-distortion switch in series. The four branches are triggered synchronously to generate a fast-rising current pulse: the inductance of the load section at the short circuit is ∼10 nH, and the short-circuit current amplitude is ∼325 kA at ±90 kV charging voltage, with a 10%–90% rise time of 110 ns. With a low-impedance RPD shorted by an 18-µm-diameter aluminum wire, a quasi-spherical x-ray focal spot with diameter <0.6 mm (width of the half-maximum grayscale) and a pulse duration of ∼25 ns (half-width of the radiation pulse) is obtained at ±70 kV charging voltage, and the imaging resolution excels 10 lp/mm under 1.56× magnification. According to the transmission–absorption x-ray spectrum estimation, the average emitted photon energy is ∼30 keV with a distinct peak in the 10–15 keV range that corresponds to the L-lines of tungsten, and the total energy of photons >10 keV reaches ∼1.16 J. Measurement of plasma parameters during the ablation phase in the Z-pinch is crucial for investigating the dynamic behaviors. In this study, optical Thomson scattering was employed to measure the temperature and velocity of the ablation plasma in a double-wire Z-pinch. The scattering spectra profiles were fitted using a model that considered the velocity distribution. The experimental results revealed the energy evolution of ablation plasma, the establishment of the global magnetic field and the development of axial non-uniformities. The precursor plasma was found to play a key role in strengthening the global magnetic field. A resistive layer near the wire core with a size of 1.5 mm was observed in the ablation plasma after the precursor plasma column formed. The plasma underwent rapid heating in this layer, the electron temperature rises from 17 eV to 22 eV. Upon leaving this layer, electron the temperature is stable at around 22 eV. The radial distribution of the ablation rate increases and decreases, indicating the axial motion of the ablation plasma, which could be caused by the tilt motion of the stream and the secondary modulation of the natural wavelength. The synergy enhancement of magnetic-spatial confinement using a bar magnet pair was applied to fiber-optic laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (FO-LIBS). By studying the plasma morphology and emission spectroscopy, the plasma temporal behaviors under free expansion, spatial confinement, and magnetic-spatial confinement have been carefully compared. Temperature distribution and pixel-to-pixel relative standard deviation (RSD) of plasma morphology under the combined effect of magnetic field and the reflected shock wave on fiber-optic laser-induced plasma were studied for the first time. The magnetic field was found to deform the plume mainly at the left and right sides, and the two high-intensity areas in FO-LIBS plasma rose from 8.7% to 13.8% and resisted being compressed together after the shock wave reflected. The magnetic-spatial confinements also demonstrated better enhancements in emission spectra than only spatial confinement, and the magnetic field tended to give around 20% and 50% additional enhancement on line intensity at the early and later stages of evolution, respectively. Besides, the self-reversed effect was significantly reduced in magnetic-spatial confinement, which can be explained by more evenly distributed temperatures calculated by spatially resolved spectra. Pixel-to-pixel RSD distribution of plasma morphology was studied, and it was found that the area of more fluctuated parts was reduced by 40% and concentrated on the left and right sides of the plasma in the magnetic field at the early stage. After the shock wave passed through, the two high-intensity areas were observed to fluctuate less due to the compression of the shock wave. Furthermore, shot-to-shot spectra fluctuation was also reduced by up to 50% under the magnetic-spatial confinement, which is consistent with the results of plasma morphology fluctuation. The gas mixture CO2–O2 has been considered as an insulation and arc-quenching medium in gas-insulated switchgears. In this paper, the dielectric breakdown properties of CO2–O2 mixtures at different O2 concentrations and gas pressures were studied theoretically by considering ion kinetics in a spatial–temporal growth avalanche model. A kinetic scheme that includes all the main reactions likely to occur in CO2–O2 mixtures is presented. An improved method to calculate the dielectric strength of the gas mixture is developed, based on an avalanche model that considers both spatial growth and temporal processes. Next, the reaction rates of ionization, attachment, detachment and ion conversion, the effective ionization Townsend coefficient αeff/N, and reduced critical electric field strength (E/N)cr in CO2–O2 mixtures at different mixing ratios and gas pressures are analyzed in detail. Finally, a pulsed Townsend experiment is performed to verify the validity and accuracy of the calculation method. Based on this, one detachment reaction rate is modified to yield more accurate results. The proliferation of urbanization and the integration of new energy sources have stimulated the development of gas-insulated transmission lines and switchgear (GIL/GIS). In particular, the compact DC GIS in offshore converter platforms will significantly reduce footprints for DC switchyards, exhibit exceptional climatic resistance, and facilitate the cost-effective connection of remote offshore wind farms and submarine links. Nevertheless, insulators used in GIS/GIL always suffer from surface charge accumulation under DC stress, which could distort and enhance the local electric field and thus trigger a flashover at the gas–solid interface if it exceeds certain magnitude levels. This susceptibility becomes a major concern affecting the reliability of DC gas-insulated systems. Beyond these engineering-related challenges lie fundamental physics problems involving mechanisms of charge accumulation and charge-induced flashover which still require exploration. To this end, this paper presents an overview of recent advancements on this topic whilst highlighting relevant issues to be addressed. Specifically, the surface charge accumulation phenomena under DC fields are reviewed, and the charging mechanisms are summarized from macroscopic to microscopic perspectives. Further, the correlation between surface charge and surface flashover is discussed. Moreover, recent developments in tailoring methods for surface charging are also presented. Background: With social transformation, rapid economic development and deepening awareness of psychological health in China, people's demand for psychological health services is becoming increasingly urgent. A key challenge for Chinese medical organizations is to train enough qualified psychological care nurses. A greater understanding of psychological care competences (PCC) can help in clinical nurse selection, training, and assessment. Objective: To develop a PCC framework for Chinese nurses and obtain a consensus on the framework among experts. Methods: A descriptive mixed methods study was designed consisting of a literature review and semi-structured interviews followed by three Delphi rounds. The experts (n = 16) involved were nurses, nursing managers and educators from nine Chinese provinces with a specific interest in psychological care. Descriptive statistics assisted in data analysis. Results: Using the Iceberg Model as a theoretical foundation, five main dimensions and associated subdomains were integrated from 39 chosen articles. The semi-structured interviews with 24 nursing managers and nurses confirmed all of the themes from the literature review while generating new themes, both of which were incorporated into the initial PCC framework. After three Delphi rounds, the experts reached consensus on the PCC framework, including five domains (knowledge, skills, professional ethics, personal traits, internal motivations) and 22 subdomains with connotations. The response rate (RR) values for the three rounds of consultation were 80.00%, 87.50% and 92.86%, the composite reliability (Cr) values were 0.89–0.90, and the Kendall coordination coefficients were 0.155-0.200 (P < 0.05). Conclusions: On the basis of the Iceberg Model, literature review and qualitative research methods along with Delphi technique were used to develop a scientific and systematic PCC framework. The research methods were feasible and the results were reliable, thereby providing a basis for adopting this framework into nursing education. Underwater electrical wire explosion is usually used as a source of underwater shock waves, and the generated shock wave intensity can be regulated by adopting a wire array. In this paper, the dynamics of the electrical explosion of two wires with different diameters connected in parallel were studied. The current flowing through each wire was measured to study the current distribution, and the self-emission image and laser backlight shadow image was obtained to observe the evolution of the wires. A numerical model was built to make explanations and predictions. The results showed that due to the presence of wire inductance and contact resistance between the wire and electrode, the wires are with different current densities and undergo asynchronous heating from the beginning of the discharge. Furthermore, the variation of current distribution among the wires was divided into six stages according to the moment the wire melted and exploded, and analyzed stage by stage. The unbalanced energy deposition results in obvious differences in thermal dynamic parameters, which explains the gradual "extinguishment" of the thinner wire in the self-emission image. Recently, C4F7N mixtures have attracted attention as a promising SF6 alternative due to their low global warming potential and excellent electrical performance. In this study, we introduce a newly built experimental setup for pulsed Townsend measurements as well as the physical model for the acquisition of electron swarm parameters. The effective ionization rate coefficients, electron drift velocity, and density-normalized longitudinal diffusion coefficients in C4F7N and its mixtures with CO2 and N2 were obtained. The reduced critical electric field for pure C4F7N at 100 Pa is determined to be 1002 Td, while it decreases with increasing pressure because of the effect of ion kinetics during the discharge process. C4F7N shows good synergism with CO2 and N2. To have a dielectric strength equivalent to that of SF6, the mixing ratio of C4F7N in its mixtures with CO2 and N2 should be 18% and 12%, respectively. In this paper, Fe10Co25Ni34Cu23Al8 high-entropy-alloy nanoparticles have been synthesized by the in situ instantaneous electrical wire explosion method. Based on the thermodynamic parameters of the face-centered cubic phase of high-entropy-alloy, the parameters of the five kinds of wires were calculated and controlled, and the stable face-centered cubic structure with good crystallinity was synthesized in one step. The influence of the energy deposition during the electrical explosion on the nanoparticles and their electromagnetic absorption performance was explored. The results show that the face-centered cubic structure high-entropy-alloy with high crystallinity has better electromagnetic wave absorption performance when the energy deposition of the wires is increased. The minimum reflection loss can reach −39.37 dB at 15.34 GHz when the thickness is 1.9 mm and the effective absorption bandwidth is 6.63 GHz. It can provide a strategy for the microstructure and morphology design of high-entropy-alloy nanoparticles in electromagnetic wave absorption and magnetism in the electronics industry. HFO-1336mzz(E) is proposed as a novel alternative to SF6 due to its low greenhouse effect and high insulation strength. Typically, it is mixed with CO2 or Air to lower its boiling point to meet the minimum operating temperature. To better understand the thermophysical properties of the gases' arcing plasma, the composition, thermodynamic properties, transport properties, and net emission coefficient of 30% molar fraction of HFO-1336mzz(E) mixed with CO2 or Air at temperatures from 300 K to 30 000 K at 0.12 MPa are calculated. It is found that HFO-1336mzz(E) mixtures have similar turbulent energy dissipation and thermal interruption capability to the pure SF6. Analysis of radiation characteristics demonstrates that the HFO-1336mzz(E) mixtures at 0.12 MPa exhibit stronger radiation emission compared to SF6 at 0.1 MPa, which indicates good arc radiation dissipation capabilities within such mixtures. This study reports the properties of thermal plasma of HFO-1336mzz(E) mixtures for the first time. These findings not only provide fundamental data for further magneto-hydro-dynamic calculations for arcing process but also put forward the potential application of these mixtures as arc interruption medium in medium voltage switchgears. During the arc breaking process of high-voltage circuit breakers, the eco-friendly SF6-alternative gases will inevitably decompose and generate various decomposition products. In some cases, this will contain solid by-products such as solid carbon, which will have a deterioration effect on the electrical insulation performance of the equipment. It has been found that adding a proper amount of O2 can effectively inhibit the formation of solid carbon. In this paper, based on the improved Gibbs free energy minimization method, a calculation model considering the solid decomposition products was established, and the arc plasma composition of CO2/O2 mixtures with the new eco-friendly gases, such as C4F7N, C5F10O, HFO-1234ze(E) and HFO-1336mzz(E), in local thermodynamic equilibrium state was calculated. The change of decomposition products with the initial O2 ratio is studied, and the criterion expression of inhibiting solid carbon formation is obtained. We also applied the method to the calculation of other SF6-alternative gases containing sulfur atoms such as NSF3 and CF3SO2F. Finally, we showed that solid carbon can be inhibited when a proper molecule formula is satisfied. This work may provide new ideas for further exploring the potential of SF6-alternative gases. Recently, fluoronitrile C4F7N is regarded as a promising alternative gas for SF6, and its global warming potential (GWP) is extremely high. C4F7N has good insulation properties and a relatively low GWP, so it can be used as an insulation medium for gas-insulated switchgears. Some studies have been conducted on the decomposition pathway of C4F7N gas that may produce possible neutral molecules and free radicals, which helps understand the thermal decomposition of C4F7N. However, anions and cations will be produced under discharge conditions. In these cases, the decomposition pathway of C4F7N will be different. In this paper, the ionization decomposition pathway and the attachment decomposition pathway of C4F7N were first calculated, while the recombination processes of the cations and anions were also considered. The results can reveal the decomposition mechanism of C4F7N and the recombination mechanism of the stable products under discharge conditions. The energy changes of all the reactions were calculated, which reveals the difficulty of chemical reactions. To better investigate the formation mechanism of stable products, the partial discharge experiment was also carried out, and the decomposition products of C4F7N mixed gas were detected. Finally, the ionization energy and electron affinity energy of the stable products were also calculated, which can determine the difference in the total electronic energy between the neutral molecule and the ion. The perfluoronitrile C4F7N is considered a promising SF6-alternative in high-voltage gas-insulated apparatus, thanks to its high dielectric strength and low global warming potential. However, a complete and consistent set of electron-neutral collision cross-sections of C4F7N is still lacking, which hinders relevant plasma modeling. In this contribution, the available electron-neutral collision cross-sections of C4F7N are first compiled and assessed. The initial cross-sections are adjusted iteratively by the electron swarm method to determine a complete and self-consistent cross-section set of C4F7N for the first time. The set is validated by a systematic comparison of electron swarm parameters between Boltzmann equation analysis and experimental measurements in pure C4F7N as well as C4F7N/N2 and C4F7N/Ar mixtures. The proposed cross-section set of C4F7N will be made available to the community in the LXCat database. C4F7N and C5F10O are the most promising SF6 alternatives as eco-friendly insulating gaseous mediums in electrical engineering. It is necessary to clarify their electrical stability and decomposition mechanisms. In this work, we first introduced our experimental results for decomposition products of C4F7N/CO2 and C5F10O/synthetic air mixtures under partial discharge and spark discharge conditions. Then, we performed ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations on the typical decomposition products. The simulations were performed under standard electron impact mass spectrometry (EI-MS); thus, the statistical results of the mass spectra were compared with those of the experimentally obtained standard mass spectra from the NIST database. The AIMD simulation method in simulating the electron-induced ionization process was verified and found to be reliable. Finally, the calculations were also performed for C4F7N and C5F10O with incident electron energies of 20 eV and 70 eV, respectively. The dominant pathway for both gases is the formation of CF3+ with the fracture of the C–C bond. The AIMD simulation is able to predict the decomposition channels after electron-impact ionization without any preconceived knowledge of fragmentation pathways, which provides a novel insight into understanding the decomposition mechanisms of C4F7N and C5F10O under different discharge conditions with different energies. Iso-C4 perfluoronitrile (C4F7N) is one of the most promising alternatives to SF6 for use in power equipment, such as high-voltage circuit breakers, due to its excellent electrical properties and environmentally friendly characteristics. The use of SF6 is being reduced because of its high global warming potential. To describe the physical and chemical processes occurring in the arc plasma in circuit breakers, both local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) and nonlocal chemical equilibrium (LCE) conditions have to be considered. The plasma composition of the arc core region can be calculated under the assumption of LTE by the method of minimization of the Gibbs free energy. The plasma composition of the arc boundary region or during the arc ignition period is not in LTE or LCE, so the use of a chemical kinetic model that considers the effects of the energy barrier in chemical reactions is required. Calculations for both conditions are presented for C4F7N. To develop the chemical kinetic model, the complete decomposition pathway and transition states were first reexamined and further developed. Based on the decomposition pathway, the rate constants of reactions were obtained according to the variational transition state theory method. The results obtained for the two cases provide a reference for the systematic understanding of the decomposition characteristics of C4F7N gas and for related engineering applications. Underwater electrical wire explosion (UEWE) is an efficient source of underwater shock waves (SWs). In order to efficiently simulate the interaction between the UEWE SW and structures, a coupled model that includes the electric circuit, the exploding wire and the surrounding water is established based on user-subroutines provided by the commercial explicit dynamics software ANSYS AUTODYN. The modeling starts from room temperature by using the tabular wide-range metal equation of state (EOS) and conductivity data. Experimental validation is performed with copper wires exploded by a μ s-timescale pulsed discharge. The numerical results show satisfactory consistency with experiments in terms of the current and voltage waveforms, the wire expansion trajectory, the evolution of SW front, the interaction between SW and electrodes and the SW pressure profiles. The main discrepancy lies in the SW amplitude that is ∼20% higher in the calculation and the possible reasons are discussed in detail. Based on this approach and with proper modifications to the metal EOS and conductivity data, the interaction between UEWE SWs and structures can be efficiently modeled in 2D and 3D for practical applications. Wide bandgap (WBG) semiconductor devices are developing rapidly due to their superior performance compared to traditional silicon-based devices. However, the packaging technology of traditional devices has limited the application of WBG semiconductor devices because of the challenges in electrical insulation. The complex environment of high blocking voltage, high frequency, and high temperature is the major reason for insulation failure of encapsulation structure. Therefore, in this article, an epoxy resin composite with nonlinear conductivity is proposed to be used as a coating to improve the electric field distribution of high-voltage high-power IGBT modules. First, an electrical field simulation model was built considering the thermal stress. It was found that the electric field in high temperature was improved compared with that in room temperature due to the temperature-dependent conductivity of silicone gel. Nevertheless, the risk of insulation failure still exists. After the application of nonlinear conductivity materials (NCMs) coating, the maximum electric field at the triple junctions and the ratio of electric field distortion in high field areas were significantly decreased. Further analysis showed that the optimization ratio of electric field increased with the increase of the blocking voltages or power losses in the IGBT chip. The results have demonstrated that the NCMs can reduce the maximum electric field in the IGBT encapsulation structure by 73% under the operating conditions of 120 W 10 kV. Partial discharge (PD) tests show that the partial discharge initial voltage (PDIV) of the substrates with NCM coating is increased by 33% compared with the normal encapsulation structure and the coating significantly inhibits the growth of electric trees. The behavior of the transient heat flux produced by a three-electrode capillary discharge generator working at a repetitive mode is presented in this paper. The radial distribution profiles of plasma temperature, electron density, and thermal load are obtained by the optical emission spectrometry and correction algorithm. Experiments with different capillary diameters and charging voltages are carried out, and the relation between the discharge characteristics and the geometry parameters of the capillary is measured. A maximum transient thermal load of 1.42 GW·m−2 is obtained with 10 Hz, which can meet the thermal load amplitude requirement of Type-I edge localized mode heat flux in the ITER-like Tokamak. The underwater electrical wire explosion (UEWE) is an appealing source of underwater shock waves (SWs) with a high conversion efficiency from electrical energy to mechanical energy, good repeatability and controllability. Industrial applications are already seen in oil-well unblocking and stratum stimulation, and research is currently underway to apply UEWEs in electro-hydraulic forming, exploitation of unconventional gas and oil resources, etc. The emerging new applications call for a review on UEWE research from the perspective of an efficient SW source. This review paper considers the physical processes and numerical simulation methods, electrical and SW characteristics, and current and potential applications, and provides suggestions for future research directions. The code (XJ_UEWE01) developed by the authors to solve a coupling model of UEWE is included. The paper will provide students and researchers new to this field with an explanation of basic concepts of UEWE and a detailed overview of previous studies, and will aid research on UEWE applications, especially device development and parameter optimization. Measurement of the magnetic field distribution in Z-pinch experiments remains an ongoing challenge. We present a method of measuring the radial distribution of the magnetic field around a copper rod using Zeeman splitting of sodium (Na) emission lines, in which an Na layer is formed by the laser ablation of NaCl crystals on a load surface. The load consists of a copper rod of 2 mm diameter and is pre-covered on its surface by the NaCl crystals. An 8 ns pulsed laser with an energy of 1 J and wavelength of 532 nm is focused on the crystals. The Na plasma is produced and expands from the surface of the copper rod into a vacuum. After applying a pulsed current with a peak value of 375 kA to the load, the Na 3s–3p doublet displays significant Zeeman splitting patterns. The self-luminosity of the Na plasma is recorded by a spectrometer coupled with an intensified charge-coupled device camera from an end-on view to eliminate the effects of different observing angles and Doppler shifts. We determine the magnetic field by fitting the measured spectra with the calculated results of the Voigt profile. The measurable range of radial position is 5–7 mm, and the corresponding magnetic field is 5–15 T. The averaged error of curve fitting is less than 12%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The formation of precursor plasma and ablation dynamics of Al thin liner explosion are investigated in this manuscript. The size of 12 mm in diameter, 10 μm in thickness Al liners are exploded on the Qin-1 facility (about 450 ns, 450 kA). An axial laser shadowgraphy and interferometry platform is set up to observe the plasma dynamics inside the liner. To solve the problem that the inside plasma density of the liner cannot be absolutely calibrated due to the lack of a zero plasma density area, we have established a CW laser interference system using a streak camera which can trace the interference lines over time. Low-density (10−7−10−6 g cm−3) precursor plasma is generated from the interior wall and flows towards the center with a velocity of about 150–200 km s−1, thus forming a column with high electron density by accumulation. Simultaneously, a high-density plasma layer flows toward the center at about 10 km s−1. The electron density of the central plasma column rises up rapidly after the precursor reaches the center and achieves 2.5 × 1018 cm−3 at 280 ns after the current starts. To fully understand the process, we have used the resistive magnetohydrodynamic code FLASH to realize a simulation to study interior precursor dynamics. We compared these simulation results with our experiments. Finally, we measured the voltage for the whole process and derived the inductance change and effective current radius. We compared the simulated current density distribution with the experimental result which proves that a considerable amount of current flows through the center plasma column, making the effective radius of current become smaller over time. This study focused on exploring various in vitro to in vivo extrapolation (IVIVE) approaches with the primary goal of improving human hepatic clearance (CL) prediction for OATP substrates. To that effect, the impact of albumin-mediated uptake in human hepatocytes was investigated. In vitro hepatic uptake assay using suspended human hepatocytes was performed with 16 selected OATP substrates to determine the uptake CL in the absence and presence of 4% BSA and unbound hepatocyte to media partition coefficient (Kpuu). Substantial enhancement of the unbound uptake CL (PSu,inf) was observed in the presence of 4% BSA, demonstrating "albumin-mediated" uptake. Prediction of human hepatic CL was performed using two non-traditional IVIVE approaches: initial uptake CL (PSu,inf) and intrinsic metabolic CL (CLint,met) corrected by Kpuu based on extended clearance concept. Compared to traditional IVIVE using CLint,met only, the two tested IVIVE approaches significantly improved the prediction of human hepatic CL. Particularly, direct extrapolation from PSu,inf (+BSA) showed the most robust correlation with in vivo human hepatic CL for all 16 compounds with bias of 1.9–2.0 for two lots of human hepatocytes, respectively. In addition, PSu,inf (+BSA) and Kpuu were also determined in suspended cynomolgus monkey hepatocytes. Prediction of monkey hepatic CL was improved by both approaches, although with more bias compared to human. These results suggested supplementing 4% BSA in human hepatocyte uptake assay provides a useful tool to characterize hepatic uptake CL for OATP substrates, enabling more accurate human CL prediction without any empirical scaling factor (ESF). This paper presents the design and test of a gas-insulated linear transformer driver (LTD) cavity aimed at the Z-pinch experimental device CZ-34. The LTD cavity has a diameter of 2290 mm and a height of 346 mm. It consists of 23 main bricks and 1 trigger brick. Each main brick is comprised of two 100 nF capacitors connected electrically in series with a field-distortion gas switch. The trigger brick is comprised of two 50 nF capacitors connected in series with a compact multi-gap gas switch. All bricks are placed in the cavity filled with compressed SF6 and are pluggable like drawers. The trigger pulse generated by the trigger brick passes through an azimuthal transmission line to the trigger ring and makes the main bricks discharge synchronously. The LTD cavity can deliver ∼1 MA current pulse with a rise time of 115 ns to 0.08 Ω liquid resistance load when the charging voltage is ±100 kV, which is in good agreement with the circuit simulation results. Experimental results demonstrate the successful application of using gas insulation and pluggable bricks. The technical feasibility of the charging configuration, triggering method, and isolation resistors is verified. There is little difference in output performance as return-current rods replaced the outside metal cylinder, which provides a new path for the design of LTD cavities in series. The evolution of plasma radiation, shock waves and the bubbles generated by laser ablation in liquids (LAL) has been investigated in spatial restriction conditions by the temporally resolved plasma radiation images and time-resolved laser shadowgraphy. No significant plasma enhancement effect is observed at the moments when two reflected waves converge in opposite directions. Two reasons may account for this phenomenon: one is that cavitation bubbles block the interaction between reflected waves and plasma, which prevents reflected waves from transmitting energy to the plasma; and the other is that the laser energy is significantly absorbed by the water medium and the emission of plasma decays rapidly in water. The results indicate that the plasma luminous intensity attenuates and lifetime decreases under restricted conditions, which is due to the existence of the moving breakdown model in the water. The Bjerknes effect of the wall on the bubbles leads to the asymmetry of the bubble evolution under restricted conditions. The dynamics of the first bubble generated by LAL is described in an analytic method with the Rayleigh–Plesset equation. The results further indicate Bjerknes force exerts little impact upon bubble evolution in the extension phase, but imposes huge effects at the shrinkage phase. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We investigate the evolution of the species from both the target and the air, and the plasma parameter distribution of the nanosecond laser-produced plasmas in atmospheric air. The technique used is spatially resolved optical emission spectroscopy. It is argued that the N II from the air, which is distributed over a wider region than the target species in the early stages of the discharge, is primarily formed by the shock wave. The ionized species have a larger expansion velocity than the excited atoms in the first ∼100 ns, providing direct evidence for space-charge effects. The electron density decreases with the distance from the target surface in the early stages of the discharge, and both the electron density and the excited temperature variation in the axial direction are found to become insignificant at later stages. The dielectric breakdown properties of SF6-CF4 mixtures were investigated at different ratios of SF6, 0.01-1.6 MPa, and gas temperatures up to 3000 K. Initially, the equilibrium compositions of SF6-CF4 mixtures were calculated by minimizing the Gibbs free energy under the assumptions of local thermodynamic and chemical equilibrium. Then the electron energy distribution function was obtained based on those data by solving the Boltzmann equation under the zero-dimensional two-term spherical harmonic approximation. Finally, the critical reduced electric field strength (E/N)cr of SF6-CF4 mixtures, which is defined as the value for which total ionization reaction is equal to total attachment reaction, were determined and analyzed. The results confirm the superior breakdown properties of pure SF6 at relatively low gas temperatures. However, for higher gas temperatures (i.e., T > 2200 K at 0.4 MPa), the (E/N)cr in SF6-CF4 mixtures are obviously higher than that in pure SF6 and the values of (E/N)cr increase with the reduction of the ratio of SF6. Laser produced copper plasmas of different spot sizes in air were investigated using fast photography and optical emission spectroscopy (OES). The laser energy was 33 mJ. There were dramatic changes in the plasma plume expansion into the ambient air when spot sizes changed from ∼0.1 mm to ∼0.6 mm. A stream-like structure and a hemispherical structure were, respectively, observed. It appeared that the same spot size resulted in similar expansion dynamics no matter whether the target was located in the front of or behind the focal point, although laser-induced air breakdown sometimes occurred in the latter case. Plasma plume front positions agree well with the classic blast wave model for the large spot-size cases, while an unexpected stagnation of ∼80 ns occurred after the laser pulse ends for the small spot size cases. This stagnation can be understood in terms of the evolution of enhanced plasma shielding effects near the plasma front. Axial distributions of plasma components by OES revealed a good confinement effect. The equilibrium compositions of different SF6-N2 mixtures at several gas pressures and temperatures up to 3000 K were first calculated by minimizing the Gibbs free energy under the assumptions of local thermodynamic and chemical equilibrium. The electron energy distribution function was then obtained using the composition data by Boltzmann equation analysis. It was found that adding N2 to SF6 gas can markedly reduce the kinetic energy of electrons at relatively high gas temperatures, which enhances the dielectric field strength. Finally, the critical reduced electric field (E/N)cr, defined as the value for which ionization is equal to attachment, of hot SF6-N2 mixtures was determined. The results indicate that in the gas temperature range around 2000-3000 K, increasing the concentration of N2 effectively enhances the (E/N)cr of SF6-N2 mixtures, and the (E/N)cr of SF6-N2 mixtures at a wide range of concentrations of N2 (5%, 50%, and 95%) are all higher than that of pure SF6 gas. Recently, perfluoroketone C5F10O has been seen as a promising alternative gas for sulphur hexafluoride (SF6), of which the global warming potential (GWP) is extremely high. C5F10O has a good insulation property and the GWP value is only 1, thus can be used as insulation medium in gas-insulated switchgears. In this study, the decomposition pathway of C5F10O and the recombination processes of free radicals are firstly explored. Secondly, the rate constants of the reactions are calculated based on the variational transition state theory, which then are fitted in the NIST form. The results not only provide the basic data for the chemical kinetics calculations, but also supplementary data for the NIST database. Finally, the chemical kinetic calculations are performed to study the decomposition characteristics at 400 °C and 700 °C. Only 4% C5F10O decomposes at 400 °C, while 96% decomposes at 700 °C. The stable products like CO, C2F4, C2F6, C3F6 are formed. The mole fraction of CF4 is above 10–10 at 400 °C. A certain amount of C2F2 is produced at 700 °C. Besides, precise chemical kinetic composition results at steady state during the thermal decomposition of C5F10O are obtained. By analyzing the energy change of reactions, the formation of products is explained theoretically. The role of inter-pulse delay on plasma dynamics and spectral emission in dual-pulse fiber-delivery plasma has been investigated using fast imaging, optical emission spectroscopy, and laser shadowgraphy. The detection on the return spectrum in dual-pulse fiber-optic laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy showed that the self-reversal and self-absorption were reduced as the inter-pulse delay increased from 50 to 1000 ns. Using scanning electron microscopy, the ablation depth showed a changing trend of increasing first and then decreasing, and a maximum of ∼2.8 μm was achieved at 250-ns inter-pulse delay. Experimental results confirmed that the improvement was due to the reduction of the plasma thickness from 1.161 mm to 0.964 mm, and the calculation of electronic excitation temperature along the photon collection path showed that the excited atom densities became more spread, which both contributed to the self-absorption reduction. At a long inter-pulse delay, the plasma trailing edge would gradually separate from the target surface with a little further expansion distance of the leading edge, resulting in the reduction of plasma thickness after a time delay of several hundred nanoseconds. The heating of the peripheral cold particles by the second-generation plasma in the later expansion led to the rapid reduction of the peak temperature. Also, the early expansion trajectory of the second-generation plasma was tracked by laser shadowgraphy, which started to appear at an inter-pulse delay of 100 ns, and the average expansion velocity reached its maximum of ∼3.8 km/s. In this paper, a calculation method is proposed to predict the dielectric strength (DS) of gases and the DS of some promising SF 6 alternative gases and their mixtures is further evaluated by DC breakdown tests. The calculation method is based on the density functional theory (DFT), so that the DS of the gases can be obtained by only calculating their molecular parameters, including the average static electronic polarizability and adiabatic ionization energy. The paper also presents the DC breakdown strength of the C 4 F 7 N, C 5 F 10 O, and HFO-type gases, and it is found that the experimental DS values are in good agreement with the calculated values. In addition, DC breakdown tests for gas mixtures are also conducted and their synergistic effect is discussed in detail. The results show that the DS of C 4 F 7 N mixed gases is equivalent to that of pure SF 6 gas even under high pressures, indicating their potential applications in HV electrical equipment. The DS of C 5 F 10 O mixed gas is slightly lower than that of C 4 F 7 N mixed gas. Compared with CO 2 , mixing with air brings stronger synergistic effect in C 5 F 10 O and C 4 F 7 N in our experiment. The DS of HFO mixture is substantially less than that of SF 6 because of the weak synergistic effect when mixed with CO 2 or N 2. This paper addresses the prediction of microparticle-initiated breakdown in mm-scaled air gaps which has a transition Pd value of about 200 Pa.m. Predictions by Townsend theory and streamer inception are compared with experimental measurements and the results indicate that the Townsend theory is in better agreement. Based on this method, the breakdown voltage of an air gap with a single microparticle is calculated and drops quasi-linearly with its radius at a decay factor about 35 V/μm. The relative reduction rates of U b caused by single r m =10 and 100 μm microparticle reaches 3.1 and 37.3%, respectively. However once r m =10 μm microparticles cluster, the reduction rate rises to 7.2 and 35.5%. This provides a prediction method to assess the effects of microparticles on gas breakdown, especially in mm-scaled gap with transition Pd value and contributes to development of insulation performance. Experiments are performed on the 'Qin-1' double pulse current generator at Xi'an Jiaotong University to study the effect of the prepulse current on the implosion dynamics of two-wire Z-pinches. An independent prepulse current with an adjustable time-delay (Tdelay) is introduced to preheat the wires before the start of the main pulse current. An estimation of the deposited energy and the areal density reconstructed from the interferogram suggest that the wires are partly vaporized with a gasification fraction of ∼67%. The prepulse preconditioning has a redistribution effect on the load mass, which determines the subsequent implosion process. The planar implosion of the two-wire load with a preset Tdelay ⩽ 450 ns can be divided into the two-layer phase and the merged implosion phase. The snowplow-like implosion is the main characteristic of the shot with a 1050 ns Tdelay. The ablation streams gradually disappear with the increasing Tdelay. The wall material and the electrode material together determine the composition of the capillary discharge plasma. In this paper, an improved ablation model considering polyethylene (PE) and copper ablation and deposition was developed. Generators with different geometric sizes were calculated and tested. The results show that the concentration distributions of copper and PE in the generator were the pair-wise opposite, and the aspect ratio (AR) had a threshold (AR = 8.67). The copper mass density distribution varied from uniform to inhomogeneous with the increase in AR, which was similar to that of its concentration distribution. The maximum copper mass density increased with the increase in AR, and the AR threshold was also 8.67. The relationship between the copper or PE ablated mass and capillary length or diameter approximately followed a power law, and the relationship between the copper or PE ablated mass and AR approximately followed a proportional law. The PE mass density distribution was not similar to that of its concentration for AR ≥ 8.67. The PE ablated mass increased with the increase in AR, and its variation was similar to that of the maximum PE mass density. When the AR(AR > 5.2) was large enough, the PE mass density distribution determined the total mass density distribution. Otherwise, the total mass density distribution was determined by the mass density distribution of PE and copper. Overall, the simulation results were in good agreement with the experiments. Using laser shadowgraphy and interferometry on a Qin-1 facility, the initial plasma formation and dynamics of an exploding stainless steel liner were investigated. To obtain the absolute electron density distribution inside the liner, we established continuous wave laser interferometry using a streak camera to measure the shift in the fringes over time. Plasma is generated at the interior wall and flows toward the center with a velocity of ∼100 km/s, thus forming a column with higher density by accumulation. Simultaneously, a high-density plasma layer is formed near the interior surface and this layer flows toward the center at approximately 10 km/s. In addition, magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) instabilities were observed at the exterior surface using side-on laser shadow images at a much later time (∼400 ns). The growth in the amplitude and the wavelength of the perturbations were then analyzed. An MHD simulation of this process was then established to demonstrate that the high-density plasma layer carries part of the current and that it flows within the 10 km/s range after comparison with the experimental results. Finally, we measured the voltage and derived the change in the inductance. In order to study the characteristic of the electrical explosion of copper and aluminum powders, a multilayer generator was designed, an experimental system was set up, and the parameters of metal powder electrical explosion were measured and analyzed. The results show that the duration of the electrical explosion process increases significantly due to the addition of metal powder. The duration of aluminum powder electrical explosion jet flow is ~86.36 ms due to its self-sustained combustion, which releases a large amount of energy, and a small fraction of aluminum powder particles is not burned. The duration of copper powder electrical explosion jet flow is ~15.84 ms, and most of the copper powder particles are in the solid state. The current pause process is absent; instead, the first discharge process is connected to the second discharge process. The effect of copper powder on the first discharge process is greater than that of aluminum powder. Furthermore, the ignition ability of copper powder electrical explosion to solid propellant is stronger than that of aluminum powder in a closed bomb experiment. Nutrient availability, in particular the availability of sugar [carbon (C)] and nitrogen (N), is important for the regulation of plant metabolism and development. In addition to independent utilization of C and N nutrients, plants sense and respond to the balance of C and N nutrients (C/N-nutrient) available to them. High C/low N-nutrient stress has been shown to arrest early post-germinative growth while promoting progression to senescence in Arabidopsis. Although several signaling components of the C/N-nutrient response have been identified, the inclusive molecular basis of plant C/N-nutrient response remains unclear. This proteome analysis evaluated phosphorylation dynamics in response to high C/low N-nutrient stress. Phosphoproteomics under conditions of C/N-nutrient stress showed a global change in the phosphorylation status of proteins, including plasma membrane H+-ATPase, carbon and nitrogen metabolic enzymes and signaling proteins such as protein kinases and transcription factors. Further analyses suggested that SNF1-related protein kinase 1 (SnRK1) is involved in primary C/N-nutrient signal mediation via the transcriptional regulation of C/N-regulatory kinases. We also identified a leucine-rich repeat receptor-like kinase with extracellular malectin-like domain, named as LMK1, which was shown to possess cell death induction activity in plant leaves. The C 4 F 7 N/CO 2 gas mixture has attracted much attention due to its excellent insulation property and eco-friendly character. In order to evaluate the feasibility of its application in DC GIL, this paper focuses on the surface charging characteristics of spacers under DC stress in the C 4 F 7 N/CO 2 mixture. First, the DC insulation strength was tested under uniform field. The results show that the critical dielectric strength of pure C 4 F 7 N is more than twice that of SF 6 and the dielectric strength of 15%∼20% C 4 F 7 N/CO 2 mixture is equivalent to that of SF 6. Next, the surface charge measurement of spacers was performed in C 4 F 7 N/CO 2 mixtures, which reveals that the surface charge density decreases slightly with the increase of C 4 F 7 N content. However, the surface charging level in 25% C 4 F 7 N/CO 2 mixture is still much higher than that in SF 6. It is found that most of the surface charge stems from partial discharges (PDs) near the flange. The PD measurement shows that in SF 6 , there are more PDs with low magnitude, but much less PDs with high magnitude compared to that in the 15%∼25% C 4 F 7 N/CO 2 mixtures. It is the different PD behaviors between C 4 F 7 N/CO 2 mixtures and SF 6 that lead to their different surface charging characteristics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new approach has been presented herein to prepare nano titanium carbide based on the underwater electrical explosion approach. Scanning electron microscopy and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to investigate the morphology and composition of the electrical explosion products. A numerical model was established to investigate the nanoparticle formation process. The results show that the average diameter of the formed nanoparticles was ∼60 nm and approximately conformed to a lognormal distribution. Compared with the nanoparticles prepared by electrical explosion in gas, the nanoparticles prepared by the underwater electrical explosion had a smaller size distribution range and better sphericity. During the formation process of nanoparticles, the distribution of nanoparticles formed in a narrow temperature range near the specific temperature directly determined the characteristics of the final electrical explosion products. The specific temperature was ∼3400 K, which was also the specific temperature of the saturation ratio, the nucleation rate, the average diameter of the formed nuclei, the number of monomers, and the number of the formed nanoparticles. The diameters of nanoparticles obtained in the experiment were mainly concentrated between 50 and 70 nm, and the calculated diameters of the nanoparticles were mainly concentrated between 55 and 65 nm; therefore, the data obtained through the model were consistent with the experimental ones. These provide a way to synthesize the nano titanium carbide and a method to estimate their size and distribution, and it is hoped for understanding the evolution of the titanium wire underwater electrical explosion and the formation of nanoparticles. Recently, the C4F7N/CO2 mixture has been highly considered as a promising SF6 alternative due to its low greenhouse effect and excellent electrical performance. Apart from its dielectric strength and arc-quenching capability, the decomposition characteristics of C4F7N/CO2 also play an important role in its future applications in gas-insulated electrical equipment. Therefore, decomposition experiments of the C4F7N/CO2 mixture were carried out under multiple AC discharge breakdowns by using a needle-to-plate electrode configuration. The compositions of the gas mixture before and after breakdowns were detected by using a gas chromatography-mass spectrometer. The results show that a trace amount of C3HF7 exists in the C4F7N product; the decomposition of the C4F7N/CO2 mixture mainly produces CO, CF4, CO2, C2F4, C2F6, C3F8, CF3CN, C3F6, C4F6, C4F10, C2F5CN, C2N2, HCN, C2F3CN, and HF. As the number of breakdowns increases, the content of most decomposition products increases significantly, while the content of C3HF7 decreases. The possible formation pathways of the decomposition products were determined, and the corresponding reaction enthalpies were calculated by quantum chemistry calculation. Relevant results not only reveal the decomposition characteristics of C4F7N/CO2 under AC breakdowns but also help us to better understand the corresponding physicochemical mechanisms, which will provide a good reference for stable operation and safe maintenance in applications. The development of electrothermal chemical launch technology and the effective ignition of energetic thermoplastic elastomer (ETPE) propellants all call for a thorough understanding of the plasma propellant interaction mechanism. Therefore in this work, a numerical model is developed to study this process. In this model, special attention is paid to deal with the regression of propellant surface, which is caused by plasma ablation, and is assumed to have considerable influence on the interaction process. By this model, interaction features of four propellants, including two ETPE propellants are studied with the aid of experiments, which are carried out to obtain plasma parameters utilized in the model. Surface temperature, ablation rate, and surface regression rate are obtained for different propellants under plasma impingement. A two-dimensional magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) model of an ablation-dominated capillary discharge is developed. Special attention is paid to the interaction between the plasma and the capillary in two-dimensional geometry. The mass exchange process is taken into account by adopting a kinetic ablation model and a revised deposition model. The momentum and energy exchange processes associated with the ablated and deposited mass are also considered. By solving this model, key plasma parameters are calculated and presented in the paper. It is shown that distinct two-dimensional features exist in the distribution of these plasma parameters. The main factor that slows down the high-frequency response of a resistive voltage divider (RVD) is the distributed stray capacitance (Cg) between the high-voltage-arm (HVA) and the grounded conductors, due to the charging and discharging of Cg through the high resistance RH of the HVA with characteristic time RHCg. Based on a RVD consisted of ceramic tube resistors, a compensation method utilizing the distributed capacitance between a specially shaped inner conductor and the HVA was proposed in this paper, which is more compact than grading rings and can work well with grounded shielding. The method was verified by electromagnetic simulation, which indicated a bandwidth improvement from 3 MHz to more than 1 GHz for the prototype RVD with grounded shielding. Experimental results showed that the 10%–90% rise time for a step input was improved by the compensating electrode from ∼90 ns to 1.25 ns. Underwater electrical explosions of Cu wires were carried out on a microsecond time scale to produce underwater shock waves. Experimental results show that the radial density distribution of the water flow after restrike contains several oscillations, observed as ∼1 mm-spaced layers in the backlit streak images and laser shadowgraphs. The phenomenon is attributed to the partial reheating of the exploding product (EP) by an interior restrike arc, which stimulates a compression wave propagating back and forth radially in the EP. Simulations are used to support the interior breakdown scenario and to demonstrate that each reflection of the compression wave at the EP–water interface launches a weak shock into the water, forming a multilayer structure. As the surrounding metallic vapor is ionized due to radiation and thermal conduction from the arc, the highly conductive plasma channel continues to extend radially and launches the main compression wave, which drowns out the multilayers when the power injection is sufficiently high.
