Background: A motor unit (MU) is formed by a single alpha motor neuron (MN) and the muscle fibers it innervates. The MU is essential for all voluntary movements. Functional deficits in the MU result in neuromuscular disorders (NMDs). The pathological mechanisms underlying most NMDs remain poorly understood, in part due to the lack of in vitro models that can comprehensively recapitulate multistage intercellular interactions and physiological function of the MU. Results: We have designed a novel three-dimensional (3D) bilayer hydrogel tri-culture system where architecturally organized MUs can form in vitro. A sequential co-culture procedure using the three cell types of a MU, MN, myoblast, and Schwann cell was designed to construct a co-differentiating tri-culture on a bilayer hydrogel matrix. We utilized a µ-molded hydrogel with an additional Matrigel layer to form the bilayer hydrogel device. The µ-molded hydrogel layer provides the topological cues for myoblast differentiation. The Matrigel layer, with embedded Schwann cells, not only separates the MNs from myoblasts but also provides a proper micro-environment for MU development. The completed model shows key MU features including an organized MU structure, myelinated nerves, aligned myotubes innervated on clustered neuromuscular junctions (NMJs), MN-driven myotube contractions, and increases in cytosolic Ca2+ upon stimulation. Conclusions: This organized and functional in vitro MU model provides an opportunity to study pathological events involved in NMDs and peripheral neuropathies, and can serve as a platform for physiological and pharmacological studies such as modeling and drug screening. Nearly all biosensing platforms can be described using two fundamental steps—collection and detection. Target analytes must be delivered to a sensing element, which can then relay the transduced signal. For point-of-care technologies, where operation is to be kept simple, typically the collection step is passive diffusion driven—which can be slow or limiting under low concentrations. This work demonstrates an integration of both active collection and detection by using resonant wireless power transfer coupled to a nanogap capacitor. Nanoparticles suspended in deionized water are actively trapped using wireless dielectrophoresis and positioned within the most sensitive fringe field regions for wireless impedance-based detection. Trapping of 40 nm particles and larger is demonstrated using a 3.5 VRMS, 1 MHz radiofrequency signal delivered over a distance greater than 8 cm from the nanogap capacitor. Wireless trapping and release of 1 µm polystyrene beads is simultaneously detected in real-time over a distance of 2.5 cm from the nanogap capacitor. Herein, geometric scaling strategies coupled with optimal circuit design is presented to motivate combined collection and detection biosensing platforms amenable to wireless and/or smartphone operation.The authors use resonant wireless power transfer to remotely trap and release nanoparticles in solution and detect their presence as a shift in impedance in real-time. Diagnostic tools for the detection of protein-misfolding diseases (i.e., proteopathies) are limited. Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) facilitate sensitive diagnostic techniques via visual color change for the identification of a variety of targets. In parallel, recently developed quaking-induced conversion (QuIC) assays leverage protein-amplification and fluorescent signaling for the accurate detection of misfolded proteins. Here, we combine AuNP and QuIC technologies for the visual detection of amplified misfolded prion proteins from tissues of wild white-tailed deer infected with chronic wasting disease (CWD), a prion disease of cervids. Our newly developed assay, MN-QuIC, enables both naked-eye and light-absorbance measurements for detection of misfolded prions. MN-QuIC leverages basic laboratory equipment that is cost-effective and portable, thus facilitating real-time prion diagnostics across a variety of settings. In addition to laboratory-based tests, we deployed to a rural field-station in southeastern Minnesota and tested for CWD on site. We successfully demonstrated that MN-QuIC is functional in a non-traditional laboratory setting by performing a blinded analysis in the field and correctly identifying all CWD positive and CWD not-detected deer at the field site in 24 h, thus documenting the portability of the assay. White-tailed deer tissues used to validate MN-QuIC included medial retropharyngeal lymph nodes, parotid lymph nodes, and palatine tonsils. Importantly, all of the white-tailed deer (n = 63) were independently tested using ELISA, IHC, and/or RT-QuIC technologies and results secured with MN-QuIC were 95.7% and 100% consistent with these tests for positive and non-detected animals, respectively. We hypothesize that electrostatic forces help govern the AuNP/prion interactions and conclude that MN-QuIC has great potential for sensitive, field-deployable diagnostics for CWD, with future potential diagnostic applications for a variety of proteopathies. Open-channel microfluidics enables precise positioning and confinement of liquid volume to interface with tightly integrated optics, sensors, and circuit elements. Active actuation via electric fields can offer a reduced footprint compared to passive microfluidic ensembles and removes the burden of intricate mechanical assembly of enclosed systems. Typical systems actuate via manipulating surface wettability (i.e., electrowetting), which can render low-voltage but forfeits open-microchannel confinement. The dielectric polarization force is an alternative which can generate open liquid microchannels (sub-100 µm) but requires large operating voltages (50–200 VRMS) and low conductivity solutions. Here we show actuation of microchannels as narrow as 1 µm using voltages as low as 0.5 VRMS for both deionized water and physiological buffer. This was achieved using resonant, nanoscale focusing of radio frequency power and an electrode geometry designed to abate surface tension. We demonstrate practical fluidic applications including open mixing, lateral-flow protein labeling, filtration, and viral transport for infrared biosensing—known to suffer strong absorption losses from enclosed channel material and water. This tube-free system is coupled with resonant wireless power transfer to remove all obstructing hardware — ideal for high-numerical-aperture microscopy. Wireless, smartphone-driven fluidics is presented to fully showcase the practical application of this technology. An acoustic plasmon mode in a graphene-dielectric-metal structure has recently been spotlighted as a superior platform for strong light-matter interaction. It originates from the coupling of graphene plasmon with its mirror image and exhibits the largest field confinement in the limit of a sub-nm-thick dielectric. Although recently detected in the far-field regime, optical near-fields of this mode are yet to be observed and characterized. Here, we demonstrate a direct optical probing of the plasmonic fields reflected by the edges of graphene via near-field scattering microscope, revealing a relatively small propagation loss of the mid-infrared acoustic plasmons in our devices that allows for their real-space mapping at ambient conditions even with unprotected, large-area graphene grown by chemical vapor deposition. We show an acoustic plasmon mode that is twice as confined and has 1.4 times higher figure of merit in terms of the normalized propagation length compared to the graphene surface plasmon under similar conditions. We also investigate the behavior of the acoustic graphene plasmons in a periodic array of gold nanoribbons. Our results highlight the promise of acoustic plasmons for graphene-based optoelectronics and sensing applications. Acoustic graphene plasmons are superior to the graphene surface plasmons in field confinement and normalized propagation length, thus promising for applications. Vibrational ultrastrong coupling, where the light–matter coupling strength is comparable to the vibrational frequency of molecules, presents new opportunities to probe the interactions between molecules and zero-point fluctuations, harness cavity-modified chemical reactions and develop novel devices in the mid-infrared spectral range. Here we use epsilon-near-zero nanocavities filled with a model polar medium (SiO2) to demonstrate ultrastrong coupling between phonons and gap plasmons. We present classical and quantum-mechanical models to quantitatively describe the observed plasmon–phonon ultrastrong coupling phenomena and demonstrate a modal splitting of up to 50% of the resonant frequency (normalized coupling strength η > 0.25). Our wafer-scale nanocavity platform will enable a broad range of vibrational transitions to be harnessed for ultrastrong coupling applications. An epsilon-near-zero medium is used to demonstrate ultrastrong coupling between phonons and gap plasmons. The approach may pave the path to exploitation of vibrational transitions. We derive the formulas for the resonance frequencies and their sensitivity when the nano-slit structures are used in the detection of thin layers. For a thin layer with a thickness of |$H$| deposited over the nanostructure, we show quantitatively that for both single and periodic slit structures with slit aperture size |$\delta $|⁠ , the sensitivity of resonance frequency reduces as |$H$| increases. Specifically, the sensitivity is of order |$O(\delta /H)$| if |$H>\delta $| and of order |$O(1+\ln H/\delta)$| otherwise. The evanescent wave modes are present along the interface between the thin dielectric film and ambient medium above. From the mathematical derivations, it is observed that the sensitivity of the resonance frequency highly depends on the effect of evanescent wave modes on the tiny slit apertures. Polaritons in two-dimensional materials provide extreme light confinement that is difficult to achieve with metal plasmonics. However, such tight confinement inevitably increases optical losses through various damping channels. Here we demonstrate that hyperbolic phonon polaritons in hexagonal boron nitride can overcome this fundamental trade-off. Among two observed polariton modes, featuring a symmetric and antisymmetric charge distribution, the latter exhibits lower optical losses and tighter polariton confinement. Far-field excitation and detection of this high-momenta mode become possible with our resonator design that can boost the coupling efficiency via virtual polariton modes with image charges that we dub 'image polaritons'. Using these image polaritons, we experimentally observe a record-high effective index of up to 132 and quality factors as high as 501. Further, our phenomenological theory suggests an important role of hyperbolic surface scattering in the damping process of hyperbolic phonon polaritons. The tight confinement of polaritons in 2D materials leads to increased optical losses. The thermal stress effects of the inter-level dielectric (ILD) layer on the ferroelectric performance of integrated Pt/SrBi[sub 2]Ta[sub 2]O[sub 9](SBT)/Pt capacitors were investigated. Two different thin film materials, pure SiO[sub 2] grown at 650 °C and B- and P-doped SiO[sub 2] grown at 400 °C by chemical vapor deposition techniques, were tested as an ILD layer. The ILD layer encapsulated the SBT capacitor array. During high temperature thermal cycling (up to 800 °C) after ILD deposition, which is used for both densifying the ILD and curing of the various damage imposed on the SBT capacitors, a large thermal stress occurred in the bottom Pt layer due to the thermal expansion mismatch between the various layers. In particular, the pure SiO[sub 2] ILD layer between the capacitors did not allow thermal expansion of the Pt layers, which led to a large accumulation of compressive stress in the layer. This resulted in hillock formation in the bottom Pt layer and eventual capacitor failure. However, the B- and P-doped SiO[sub 2] ILD layer contracted during thermal cycling by removing residual impurities, which allowed greater expansion of the Pt layer. Therefore, compressive stress accumulation did not occur and excellent ferroelectric properties were thus obtained from the integrated capacitor array. © 2001 American Institute of Physics. Precise measurements of the mobility anisotropy along high-symmetry crystal axes in black phosphorus (BP) MOSFETs are reported. Locally back-gated BP MOSFETs with 13-nm HfO2 dielectric and channel length ranging from 0.3 to 0.7 $\mu \text{m}$ are fabricated. A single BP flake of a uniform thickness is exfoliated and etched along armchair (AC) and zigzag (ZZ) crystal axes, and the orientations are confirmed using optical and transmission electron microscopy analyses. The hole and electron mobilities along each direction are extracted using the transfer length method. The AC-to-ZZ hole mobility ratio is found to increase from 1.4 (1.5) to 2.0 (2.9) as the sheet concentration increased from $5.1\times 10^{\textsf {11}}$ to $1.9\times 10^{\textsf {12}}$ cm−2 at room temperature (77 K). The room-temperature electron mobility anisotropy is found to be similar to that for holes with an AC-to-ZZ mobility ratio increasing from 1.4 to 2.1 from $5.1\times 10^{\textsf {11}}$ to $1.9\times 10^{\textsf {12}}$ cm−2 though electrons showed only a very weak temperature dependence. A Boltzmann transport model is used to explain the concentration- and temperature-dependent mobility anisotropies which can be well described using a charge center scattering model. The present study was conducted to evaluate the total cooling effectiveness in combined full-coverage film cooling and impingement jet using an infrared thermographic technique. The effect of film cooling hole angle, blowing ratio, and height to diameter ratio between the film cooling and impingement jet plates was discussed. The total cooling effectiveness increased as impingement jet cooling was added. The angled film cooling holes had approximately 4.6% higher total cooling effectiveness than the normal film cooling holes. We report high performance, orientation-controlled, and locally back-gated black phosphorus (BP) n-MOSFETs and p-MOSFETs with titanium and permalloy contacts, respectively. Devices with channel length ranging from 0.3 to 0.7~\mu \textm are analyzed. Armchair-oriented BP p-MOSFETs (n-MOSFETs) display 3.5 times (1.5 times) higher maximum current compared with zigzag devices. Saturated transconductance values up to 4.8 times (1.6 times) higher for BP p-MOSFETs (n-MOSFETs) oriented along the armchair direction compared with the zigzag direction are observed. Using this orientation control and contact engineering, n-MOSFETs with transconductance of 110~\mu \textS/\mu \textm and p-MOSFETs with contact resistance as low as 0.31 \textk\Omega \cdot \mu \textm are demonstrated. Nanopipettes are an attractive single-molecule tool for identification and characterisation of nucleic acids and proteins in solutions. They enable label-free analysis and reveal individual molecular properties, which are generally masked by ensemble averaging. Having control over the pore dimensions is vital to ensure that the dimensions of the molecules being probed match those of the pore for optimization of the signal to noise. Although nanopipettes are simple and easy to fabricate, challenges exist, especially when compared to more conventional solid-state analogues. For example, a sub-20 nm pore diameter can be difficult to fabricate and the batch-to-batch reproducibility is often poor. To improve on this limitation, atomic layer deposition (ALD) is used to deposit ultrathin layers of alumina (Al2O3) on the surface of the quartz nanopipettes enabling sub-nm tuning of the pore dimensions. Here, Al2O3 with a thickness of 8, 14 and 17 nm was deposited onto pipettes with a starting pore diameter of 75 ± 5 nm whilst a second batch had 5 and 8 nm Al2O3 deposited with a starting pore diameter of 25 ± 3 nm respectively. This highly conformal process coats both the inner and outer surfaces of pipettes and resulted in the fabrication of pore diameters as low as 7.5 nm. We show that Al2O3 modified pores do not interfere with the sensing ability of the nanopipettes and can be used for high signal-to-noise DNA detection. ALD provides a quick and efficient (batch processing) for fine-tuning nanopipettes for a broad range of applications including the detection of small biomolecules like RNA, aptamers and DNA–protein interactions at the single molecule level. We examined groundwater and stream water interaction in the Inbuk stream, Korea, using various approaches including hydrologic, thermal, hydrochemical, and isotopic methods. For this purpose, we installed four piezometers (IYHW1-4) in the streambed at 10 m interval across the stream and at depths of 0.90 to 1.54 m. We monitored water levels and water temperatures every hour using automatic transducers at the piezometers and in the stream (IYSW1) from September 2013 to April 2014. We also analyzed chemical and isotopic compositions for the hyporheic waters, stream water, and nearby groundwater in early September and late November in 2013. The water levels and hydraulic gradients revealed that three (IYHW1, 2, and 4) of the piezometers were in upwelling conditions for most of the monitoring period, except for the earliest short period (considered to be the wet season), whereas one piezometer (IYHW3) showed a reverse behavior, indicating that the gaining was dominant in the dry period. The mean calculated influx to the stream was 3.04 × 10 cm/sec. Observed temperatures of stream water, hyporheic waters, and groundwater also revealed that stream water was downwelling in the early monitoring period (wet season), whereas the groundwater was generally upwelling in most of the resting period, which is consistent with the water level interpretation. Chemical composition analysis indicated that most of the waters were Ca-HCO type for both seasons. However, no distinctive difference between chemical compositions of water without substantial seasonal variation negated any inference on the flow conditions. The mixing ratios computed from oxygen and hydrogen isotopic compositions indicated that losing conditions were dominant in the wet season, whereas gaining conditions prevailed in the dry season. The interpretations of stream water and groundwater interactions based on these different methods are relatively consistent for this study area, indicating that such combined methods will be very useful in enhancing understanding of groundwater and stream water interaction. We have investigated the extraordinary optical transmission of terahertz waves through an array of nanogaps with varying dimensions and periodicities, and used this platform to demonstrate terahertz sensing of a thin film of single-walled carbon nanotubes. We have used atomic layer lithography to fabricate periodic arrays of nanogap loops that have a gap size of 2 nm and a loop length of 100 μm (aspect ratio of 50 000). These sub-mm-scale loops of nanogaps can sustain terahertz electromagnetic resonances along the contour. We have characterized the transmission of terahertz waves through the nanogap arrays and investigated the influence of inter-gap electromagnetic coupling as the array periodicity shrinks from 100 μm to 4 μm. While the gaps occupy only 0.1% of the surface area, we have measured an amplitude (☋E☋) transmittance of over 50% due to the strong and broadband field enhancement inside the nanogaps. The absolute transmission through the 2 nm gaps along the rectangular loops can be boosted up to 25%, while it is only 1% for annular gaps with the same perimeter. Furthermore, the extremely tight field confinement and strong field enhancement near the 2 nm gap lead to 43% extinction of THz waves in a 10 nm-thick film of single-walled carbon nanotubes over the gaps. On the other hand, THz extinction by the same nanotube film on a bare glass substrate is only 2%. High carrier mobility and tunability in graphene enable fundamental studies for plasmonics and various applications. Despite its versatility, however, single‐layer graphene (SLG) suffers from poor coupling efficiency to electromagnetic waves, presenting a major challenge for photonic applications. Compared with visible or infrared radiation, terahertz (THz) waves exhibit higher absorption in SLG due to Drude‐like intraband transitions, but the wavelength‐to‐SLG size mismatch becomes even more dramatic. Here, we experimentally demonstrate 99% extinction of THz wave transmission when SLG covers the openings of 2‐nm‐wide (≈λ/1 000 000) slits through a metal film. By resonantly coupling THz waves through annular nanogaps, the extremely localized fields lead to near‐perfect extinction and strong absorption in SLG. Atomic‐layer lithography is used to produce these nanometer‐wide, millimeter‐long gaps over an entire 4‐in. wafer. Furthermore, by integrating these devices with an ionic liquid, enhanced intraband absorption in the SLG leads to 80% modulation of THz waves with an operational voltage as low as 1.5 V. The immune system generates antibodies and antigen-specific T-cells as basic elements of the immune networks that differentiate self from non-self in a finely tuned manner. The antigen-specific nature of immune responses ensures that normal immune activation contains non-self when tolerating self. Here we review the B-1 subset of lymphocytes which produce self-reactive antibodies. By analyzing the IgM class of natural antibodies that recognize antigens from the nervous system, we emphasize that natural antibodies are biomarkers of how the immune system monitors the host. The immune response activated against self can be detrimental when triggered in an autoimmune genetic background. Characterization of binding kinetics and affinity between a potential drug and its receptor are key steps in the development of new drugs. Among the techniques available to determine binding affinities, surface plasmon resonance has emerged as the gold standard because it can measure binding and dissociation rates in real-time in a label-free fashion. Surface plasmon resonance is now finding applications in the characterization of molecules for treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, characterization of molecules associated with pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases and detection of neurodegenerative disease biomarkers. In addition it has been used in the characterization of a new class of natural autoantibodies that have therapeutic potential in a number of neurologic diseases. The ability to precisely control the topography, roughness, and chemical properties of metallic nanostructures is crucial for applications in plasmonics, nanofluidics, electronics, and biosensing. Here a simple method to produce embedded nanoplasmonic devices that can generate tunable plasmonic fields on ultraflat surfaces is demonstrated. Using a template-stripping technique, isolated metallic nanodisks and wires are embedded in optical epoxy, which is capped with a thin silica overlayer using atomic layer deposition. The top silica surface is topographically flat and laterally homogeneous, providing a uniform, high-quality biocompatible substrate, while the nanoplasmonic architecture hidden underneath creates a tunable plasmonic landscape for optical imaging and sensing. The localized surface plasmon resonance of gold nanodisks embedded underneath flat silica films is used for real-time kinetic sensing of the formation of a supported lipid bilayer and subsequent receptor-ligand binding. Gold nanodisks can also be embedded in elastomeric materials, which can be peeled off the substrate to create flexible plasmonic membranes that conform to non-planar surfaces. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Matrix molecules convey biochemical and physical guiding signals to neurons in the central nervous system (CNS) and shape the trajectory of neuronal fibers that constitute neural networks. We have developed recombinant human IgMs that bind to epitopes on neural cells, with the aim of treating neurological diseases. Here we test the hypothesis that recombinant human IgMs (rHIgM) can guide neurite outgrowth of CNS neurons. Microcontact printing was employed to pattern rHIgM12 and rHIgM22, antibodies that were bioengineered to have variable regions capable of binding to neurons or oligodendrocytes, respectively. rHIgM12 promoted neuronal attachment and guided outgrowth of neurites from hippocampal neurons. Processes from spinal neurons followed grid patterns of rHIgM12 and formed a physical network. Comparison between rHIgM12 and rHIgM22 suggested the biochemistry that facilitates anchoring the neuronal surfaces is a prerequisite for the function of IgM, and spatial properties cooperate in guiding the assembly of neuronal networks [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nanofabricated metallic tips are at the core of important research in single-molecule imaging, near-field scanning optical microscopy, tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, as well as potential commercial applications such as heat-assisted magnetic recording. While challenging to fabricate, much progress has been made towards the reliable production of extremely sharp (10 nm) metallic probes. In this review, the various factors that go into the design of metallic tips, their fabrication, packaging and system integration, characterization, passivation, and eventual use are discussed. Fabrication challenges, implementation issues, optical excitation schemes, and various current and emerging applications are also discussed. For the rapidly emerging fields of plasmonics and nanophotonics, the use of sharp metallic tips has generated significant scientific progress and will play an integral role well into the future. Although atomic layer deposition (ALD) has been used for many years as an industrial manufacturing method for microprocessors and displays, this versatile technique is finding increased use in the emerging fields of plasmonics and nanobiotechnology. In particular, ALD coatings can modify metallic surfaces to tune their optical and plasmonic properties, to protect them against unwanted oxidation and contamination, or to create biocompatible surfaces. Furthermore, ALD is unique among thin film deposition techniques in its ability to meet the processing demands for engineering nanoplasmonic devices, offering conformal deposition of dense and ultrathin films on high-aspect-ratio nanostructures at temperatures below 100 °C. Metallic nanostructures now play an important role in many applications. In particular, for the emerging fields of plasmonics and nanophotonics, the ability to engineer metals on nanometric scales allows the development of new devices and the study of exciting physics. We compare the dielectric functions of silver interfaces obtained via thermal evaporation with those obtained with template stripping. Ellipsometry measurements show that the smoother template-stripped surfaces exhibit effective dielectric functions with a more negative real component and a smaller imaginary component, implying higher conductivity and less energy loss, respectively. These results agree with the relation between dielectric function and surface roughness derived from combining the effective-medium model and the Drude-Lorentz model. The improvement in the effective dielectric properties shows that metallic films prepared via template stripping can be favorable for applications in electronics, nanophotonics, and plasmonics. This perspective gives an overview of recent developments in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) for biosensing. We focus this review on SERS papers published in the last 10 years and to specific applications of detecting biological analytes. Both intrinsic and extrinsic SERS biosensing schemes have been employed to detect and identify small molecules, nucleic acids, lipids, peptides, and proteins, as well as for in vivoand cellular sensing. Current SERS substrate technologies along with a series of advancements in surface chemistry, sample preparation, intrinsic/extrinsic signal transduction schemes, and tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy are discussed. The business-to-consumer aspect of electronic commerce (EC) is the most visible business use of the World Wide Web (WWW). A virtual store allows companies to provide product information and offer direct sales to their customers through an electronic channel. Success in this business is dependent on understanding the concerns of customers and identifying the factors that promote the intention to use a virtual store. Thus, this paper aims to examine the human motivations underlying individual behavioral intention to use a virtual store in Korea. This study employs TAM (technology acceptance model) as the base model and develops a more comprehensive version of TAM to better reflect a virtual store. The model employs playfulness, trust, information richness, and system quality, in addition to perceived usefulness and ease of use. The study investigates the causal relationships among the constructs used in this revised TAM and identifies the causal role of the constructs in developing the intention to use a virtual store. It finds that attitude toward a virtual store is the most significant factor in predicting the behavioral intention to use a virtual store. It also identifies perceived playfulness, perceived trust, perceived usefulness, and perceived ease of use as four major factors that directly affect virtual store users' attitudes. The results also indicate that information richness and system quality have significant albeit indirect impacts on consumer adoption of a virtual store. We have investigated the retention characteristics of ferroelectric random access memories (FeRAMs) using a bismuth layered perovskite, (Bi,La)4Ti3O12 (BLT). Due to the charge retention loss in ferroelectric storage capacitors, the sensing signal margin in FeRAM devices decreases from 920 mV at the retention time of 0.01 s to 770 mV at 100 s. From the logarithmic time dependence of the loss of obtained cell signals, the average margin of 520 mV is expected to remain after 10 y at 90°C. In addition, the slower retention loss rate in ferroelectric capacitors in long time retention region, suggests the high device reliability against retention degradation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We investigate thin Ag films incorporating plasmonic nanohole arrays as transparent conducting electrodes for organic photovoltaic cells. Plasmonic electrodes are fabricated using nanosphere lithography to create hexagonal nanohole arrays over centimeter-sized areas. Devices constructed using a nanopatterned Ag anode show power conversion efficiencies that exceed those of devices constructed on conventional indium-tin-oxide, independent of light polarization.
