Molecular weight (MW) of organics was one of the important factors influencing membrane fouling propensity. This study identified critical foulants of reverse osmosis (RO) membranes in reclaimed water by MW fractionation. MW > 10 kDa component was identified as the critical fouling contributor (CFC) in secondary effluent (SE), which accounted for only 13 ± 5% of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) but contributed to 86 ± 11% of flux decline. Throughout 12-month monitoring, SE and MW > 10 kDa component showed a similar fouling variation tendency: apparently higher fouling potential in winter and lower in summer, while MW < 10 kDa component presented minor fouling changes. Morphology of membrane fouled by CFC characterized a smooth and thick foulant layer on membrane surface. CFC was mainly composed of proteins and polysaccharides, and a protein-polysaccharide-protein "sandwich" fouling layer structure was preferentially formed on membrane surface. extended Derjaguin–Landau-Verwey–Overbeek (xDLVO) analysis demonstrated that strong attractive interactions between CFC and membrane surface dominated the fouling process. Furthermore, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation revealed strong filtration resistance of CFC, confirming its significant fouling potential. Dual effects including attractive interactions and advantageous ridge-and-valley surface appearance accounted for the significant fouling propensity of MW > 10 kDa component and glean valuable insights into RO fouling mechanisms of reclaimed water in practical application. With an increasingly profound understanding of battery materials, strategies designed for interface protection have become more sophisticated. However, it is inherent that different materials used in electrodes and electrolytes tend to react with each other. To address this issue, this study proposes an "Electrode‐Electrolyte‐In‐One" (EEIO) concept, where a single energy storage material can serve as both electrode and solid‐state electrolyte (SSE) during its different ion storage stages. The EEIO materials of chloride ion batteries and fluorine ion batteries are preliminarily studied, establishing reasonable screening procedures and predicting their operational mechanisms. The analysis of Cl− and F− affinity indicates that the EEIO system in the anion storage batteries comprises the anode and SSE. Through comprehensive evaluation of ion binding capacity, phase transformation mechanism, electrical conductivity, and ion diffusion kinetic properties, several potential EEIO materials are identified. In the EEIO system, the material interface and the conductive‐insulation interface are separated, which solves the material compatibility problem between the anode and SSE. Furthermore, the EEIO system has an inherent correlation between the anode electrochemical reaction and the SSE decomposition reaction, ensuring that the electrochemical voltage of EEIO batteries never exceeds the decomposition voltage of SSE. Nested skyrmion bags, as magnetic solitons with arbitrary integer topological charges (Q), hold potential for applications in data encoding. A crucial issue is the local manipulation of skyrmions within nested skyrmion bags to control the total Q. In this study, we explore different possible ground states and resonant excitation spectra of nested skyrmion bags through micromagnetic simulations. More importantly, we demonstrate that the manipulation of the Q of nested skyrmion bags can be achieved by using microwave magnetic fields, i.e., the inner, middle, and outer skyrmions within the nested skyrmion bags are selectively excited by using the diverse out-of-plane excitation modes. By calculating the energy of skyrmions, we further analyze the relationship between the annihilation of skyrmions at different positions and the out-of-plane microwave magnetic fields. The current study investigated the relationship between COVID-19 prevention burnout and emotional symptoms (depression and anxiety) among 1,837 Chinese college students and the underlying mechanisms. Results from moderated mediation analysis revealed that the association between COVID-19 prevention burnout and emotional symptoms was mediated by psychological inflexibility (β = 0.20, 95%CI = [0.10, 0.19]). Also, COVID-19 prevention burnout's direct and indirect effects on emotional symptoms were more substantial for students with high susceptibility to emotional contagion than those with low susceptibility. These findings contribute to understanding how COVID-19 prevention burnout relates to emotional symptoms and provide a new perspective for interventions promoting students' psychological flexibility, particularly those with higher susceptibility to emotional contagion. Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) is a highly contagious and pathogenic infectious disease caused by the porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV). It manifests as reproductive disorders in sows and respiratory disorders in piglets. PRRSV infects swine herds with symptoms such as abortions, stillbirths, and mummified fetuses in gestating sows. Piglets mainly experience abdominal respiration and respiratory symptoms. To date, the prevention of PRRS relies primarily on vaccination and the implementation of various preventive and control measures. Swine deaths caused by PRRS have resulted in significant economic losses to the pig industry worldwide. Non-structural protein 10 (NSP10) has helicase and adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase) activities that unwind DNA and RNA and play important roles in viral replication and transcription. Hence, it can be potentially used to develop novel reagents for the detection of PPRSV. This article reviews genetic variations, interaction with viral and host proteins, effects on PRRSV replication, immunomodulation, apoptosis, and viral virulence of NSP10, with the aim of providing a theoretical basis for the prevention and control of PRRS and drug development in the future. Degraded images often suffer from low contrast, color deviations, and blurring details, which significantly affect the performance of detectors. Many previous works have attempted to obtain high-quality images based on human perception using image enhancement algorithms. However, these enhancement algorithms usually suppress the performance of degraded object detection. In this paper, we propose a task-oriented image enhancement network (TIENet) to directly improve degraded object detection's performance by enhancing the degraded images. Unlike common human perception-based image-to-image methods, TIENet is a zero-reference enhancement network, which obtains a detection-favorable structure image that is added to the original degraded image. In addition, this paper presents a fast Fourier transform-based structure loss for the enhancement task. With the new loss, our TIENet enables the structure image obtained to enhance more useful detection-favorable structural information and suppress irrelevant information. Extensive experiments and comprehensive evaluations on underwater (URPC2020) and foggy (RTTS) datasets show that our proposed framework can achieve 0.5–1.6% AP absolute improvements on classic detectors, including Faster R-CNN, RetinaNet, FCOS, ATSS, PAA, and TOOD. Besides, our method also generalizes well to the PASCAL VOC dataset, which can achieve 0.2–0.7% gains. We expect this study can draw more attention to high-level task-oriented degraded image enhancement. Simple Summary: Bovine IgG1 Fc receptor (boFcγRIII) is a homologue to human FcγRIII (CD16) that has two extracellular Ig-like domains and can bind bovine IgG1 with medium–low affinity. We identified the Fc-binding site as well as its key residues for IgG1 binding using synthetic peptides, which is located in the second extracellular domain of boFcγRIII. It provides new insights for the IgG–Fcγ interaction and FcγR-targeting drugs development. The bovine IgG1 Fc receptor (boFcγRIII) is a homologue to human FcγRIII (CD16) that binds bovine IgGI with medium–low affinity. In order to identify the Fc-binding site on the bovine IgG1 Fc receptor (boFcγRIII), peptides derived from the second extracellular domain (EC2) of boFcγRIII were synthesized and conjugated with the carrier protein. With a Dot-blot assay, the ability of the peptides to bind bovine IgG1 was determined, and the IgG1-binding peptide was also identified via truncation and mutation. The minimal peptide AQRVVN corresponding to the sequence 98–103 of boFcγRIII bound bovine IgG1 in Dot-blot, suggesting that it represents a linear ligand-binding site located in the putative A–B loop of the boFcγRIII EC2 domain. Mutation analysis of the peptide showed that the residues of Ala98, Gln99, Val101, Val102 and Asn103 within the Fc-binding site are critical for IgG1 binding on boFcγRIII. Motivated by the recently discovered superconductivity in Sr-doped nickelate oxides NdNiO2 reduced from NdNiO3 in experiments, we predict a Mott multiferroic BiNiO2 that may be obtained from BiNiO3. There is a ferroelectric structural transition for BiNiO2 from the nonpolar phase to the polar phase with the P4mm space group, which is driven by the lone pair on Bi. The lowest energy ground-state for polar BiNiO2 is a Hubbard Mott insulator with the G-type antiferromagnetic spin configurations. Monolayer 2D lateral heterostructures with high interface qualities and well‐defined structures are particularly promising in novel electronic and optoelectronic applications. However, the photoelectric responses are still very low, and the working and modulating mechanisms urgently need exploration. Here, a lateral monolayer heterojunction of WS2‐WSe2 is successfully prepared with an atomically sharp interface and a band alignment of type‐II structure. Intriguingly, this heterojunction photodetector (PD) achieves outstanding characteristics of photocurrent generation in both photovoltaic and photoconductive modes with responsivities (Rs) of 60.2/3.0 A W−1, detectivities (D*s) of 1.81/0.98 × 1012 Jones, and response times of 32.2/28.5 and 39.5/32.1 ms, respectively. Moreover, all‐inorganic CsPbBr3 quantum dots are introduced to substantially promote the photoelectric responses. Because of the favorable band alignment and large absorption of the CsPbBr3, and efficient carrier transfer, the Rs and D*s are substantially improved to 1307/141.3 A W−1 and 1.16/2.94 × 1013 Jones, respectively, with fantastic external quantum efficiencies of 3.59/0.388 × 105% and also shortened response times of 12.5/13.2 and 17.4/15.8 ms. In addition, the ambient stability is remarkably enhanced. This study demonstrates that the combination of 2D lateral heterojunction with all‐inorganic perovskite may bring up promising opportunities for developing high‐performance PDs. We view the development of industries with various market competition levels as a dynamic process and investigate the game between a new entrant and the original market with variable market competition degrees under the premise of considering the entry and exit of companies in the industry. Based on this, we explore the prerequisites for the new firm to enter the initial market and construct a recursive formula for the optimal output of individual firms entering the market one at a time, as well as the conditions for the new firm to enter the market in the three scenarios of the original market being mixed strategy, low-carbon type, and traditional type, respectively, and the optimal decision-making behavior once entering the market. We create diversified carbon tax rates for various cost bands of low-carbon production patterns in order to modify the original traditional market and allow the new enterprise to enter the market using a low-carbon production strategy. Molecular ferroelectrics are a promising class of ferro-electrics, with environmental friendliness, flexibility and low cost. In this work, a set of characteristic molecular ferroelectrics are simulated by molecular dynamics (MD) with polarized crystal charge (PCC). From the simulated results, their ferroelectric switching mechanisms are elucidated, with their ferroelectric hysteresis loops. The PCC charge model, recently developed by our group, containing the quantum electric polarization effect, is suitable in nature for studying molecular ferroelectrics. The simulated systems include the typical molecular ionic ferroelectrics, di-isopropyl-ammonium halide (DIPAX, X=C (Cl), B (Br), and I), as well as a pair of newly validated organic molecular ferroelectrics, salicylideneaniline and (-)-camphanic acid. In total, there are five systems under investigation. Results demonstrate that the PCC MD method is efficient and reliable. It not only elucidates the ferroelectric switching mechanism of the studied molecular ferroelectrics, but also extends the application range of the PCC MD. In conclusion, PCC MD provides an efficient protocol for extensive computer simulations of molecular ferroelectrics, with reliable ferroelectric properties and associated mechanisms, and would promote further exploration of novel molecular ferroelectrics. Retinoid-related orphan receptor γt (RORγt), a vital transcription factor for the differentiation of the pro-inflammatory Th17 cells, is essential to the inflammatory response and pathological process mediated by Th17 cells. Pharmacological inhibition of the nuclear receptor RORγt provides novel immunomodulators for treating Th17-driven autoimmune diseases and organ transplant rejection. Here, we identified 2,2′,4′-trihydroxychalcone (TDC), a natural chalcone derivant, binds directly to the ligand binding domain (LBD) of RORγt and inhibited its transcriptional activation activity. Using three mice models of Th17-related diseases, it was found that the administration of TDC effectively alleviated the disease development of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), experimental colitis, and skin allograft rejection. Collectively, these results demonstrated TDC targeting RORγt to suppress Th17 cell polarization, as well as its activity, thus, indicating the potential of this compound in treating of Th17-related autoimmune disorders and organ transplant rejection disorders. People increasingly need air filters with ultra-high efficiency due to air pollution. In this work, BNNSs (boron nitride nanosheets) were prepared by chemical method using potassium permanganate and sulphuric acid. This functionalization induced the exfoliation of the layered structure of h-BN into monolayer or few-layer sheets. Infrared spectrum analysis shows that the oxidation functional group was introduced into hexagonal boron nitride. Further investigation of the crystallization property was accomplished by XRD analysis in conclusion that the crystal structure was not changed for the introduction of oxidation functional group. The polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and BNNSs/PAN nanofiber films were constructed by electrospinning. It is found that the electrospun nanofiber films had good filtration effect and could capture the most particles in the air because of electrostatic adsorption. The removal rate of particle by the filters reached 99.8% for BNNSs/PAN nanofiber films. Addition of BNNSs increaed the mechanical property of the nanofiber films. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report the resonance excitations and the spin-wave modes of a single bimeron in a confined nanodot by using micromagnetic simulations. Magnetic bimerons can be considered as in-plane topological spin textures of magnetic skyrmions, which means that the spin-wave modes of bimerons also rotate in-plane compared to skyrmions, for example, through the application of out-of-plane microwave magnetic fields, the spin-wave mode of bimerons is no longer a breathing mode but contains a counterclockwise mode at low frequencies and a clockwise mode at high frequencies. When in-plane microwave magnetic fields rotated at different angles are applied, the spin-wave mode of bimerons has an anisotropic property, i.e., the spin-wave mode presents as a breathing mode for the microwave magnetic field applied along the x -direction, and a couple of azimuthal modes for the microwave magnetic field applied along the y -direction. Moreover, we demonstrate that the breathing mode, the counterclockwise rotation mode, and the clockwise rotation mode can simultaneously appear together when the microwave magnetic field is applied at a specific angle in the plane. In addition to the three typical spin-wave modes, two high-phase counterclockwise rotation modes lead to the periodic deformation of bimerons due to the broken rotational symmetry of the spin texture. Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) is a highly contagious and virulent infectious disease caused by the porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV), which has substantial economic losses in the pig industry worldwide, and PRRSV attenuated vaccines and inactivated vaccines do have limitations in immune protection. The discovery of new antiviral targets has become a new research field. The proteomic studies have shown that the PRRSV NSP2 protein interacts with tripartite motif protein 4 (TRIM4), but it was still unknown whether TRIM4 regulates PRRSV infections. In this study, the TRIM4 gene from Marc-145 cells was cloned, and it was proved that TRIM4 overexpression inhibits PRRSV replication, whereas TRIM4 small-interfering-RNA knockdown resulted in increased virus titers. Mechanism investigation indicated that TRIM4 inhibits PRRSV replication through ubiquitination and degradation of the NSP2 protein. Protease inhibitor MG132 (carbobenzoxy-Leu-Leu-leucinal) attenuated the TRIM4-driven degradation of NSP2. Taken together, TRIM4 impairs PRRSV proliferation via ubiquitination and degradation of NSP2. Background: This study examined the role of anxiety and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) burnout in the relationship between coronavirus stress and overeating among Chinese college students during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: Chinese college students (N = 2926; Mage = 19.90, SD = 1.47, range = 18–25 years old; 54.34% female) completed self-reported online questionnaires regarding coronavirus stress, anxiety, COVID-19 burnout, and overeating. Results: Anxiety showed partially indirect effect on the association between coronavirus stress and overeating. COVID-19 burnout exacerbated the indirect pathway between coronavirus stress and overeating via anxiety. Discussion and conclusion: This is the first study, to our knowledge, that examines the underlying mechanisms of the coronavirus stress and overeating behavior association among Chinese college students. The results support several existing theories on stress and problematic eating behaviors and provide practical implications for prevention and intervention programs of overeating during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, they are limited by the cross-sectional nature of the study, meaning we cannot imply causality. Magnetic skyrmions, whose shapes are ellipse due to the presence of anisotropic Dzyaloshinskiiâ€"Moriya interaction (DMI), have already been discovered in experiments recently. By using micromagnetic simulations, we discuss the ground state and the spin-wave modes of a single elliptical skyrmion in a confined nanodot. It is found that the shapes of skyrmion are stretched into a horizontal ellipse, vertical ellipse, or stripe shape under different strengths of anisotropic DMI. When elliptical skyrmions are excited by in-plane ac magnetic fields, the spin-wave mode contains a counterclockwise rotation mode at high frequencies and a clockwise (CW) rotation mode at low frequencies, and the CW mode depends on the strength of anisotropic DMI. When elliptical skyrmions are excited by out-of-plane ac magnetic fields, the spin-wave mode is split from a simple breathing mode into two complex breathing modes, including a mixed mode of CW rotation and breathing, and another anisotropic breathing mode. Background: This study examined the mediating effect of sense of control and the moderating effect of coronavirus stress on the relationship between life history strategy and overeating among Chinese college students during the COVID-19 period. Methods: 3310 Chinese students (Mage = 19.74, SD = 1.50; 47% males) completed self-reported questionnaires regarding life history strategy, sense of control, overeating, and coronavirus stress. The data were analyzed using Pearson's r correlations and moderated mediation analysis. Results: The results revealed that control sense mediated the link between life history strategy and college students' overeating. College students' coronavirus stress moderated the associations between life history strategy and college students' sense of control and between control sense and overeating. The association between life history strategy and sense of control was stronger for those with lower coronavirus stress, and the association between sense of control and overeating was stronger for those with lower coronavirus stress. Conclusions: This study identified that the critical factors were associated with overeating. On the one hand, the research deepens the application and interpretation of life history theory in the field of eating; on the other hand, it provides evidence for the prevention of overeating, and provides theoretical basis for psychological assistance among Chinese college students. Transition metal oxychlorides (TMOCl) have attracted great attention as promising cathode materials for chloride ion batteries (CIBs). However, current research on TMOCl has been mainly focused on FeOCl and VOCl. On the other hand, the theoretical study of anionic rechargeable batteries faces the difficulty of predicting the discharge voltage of the electrode materials based on the half-cell system. Herein, a reliable theoretical voltage formula for CIBs is proposed based on a full-cell system with Li/LiCl as the reference anode. A high throughput screening method for TMOCl is applied among 16 transition metals. After the screening according to energetic and dynamic stability, Co is identified, which can form a new cathode material of CoOCl. Compared to FeOCl and VOCl, CoOCl has a higher discharge voltage, which is beneficial for achieving a larger energy density. The small crystal field splitting energy and exchange splitting energy of Co3+ result in higher electronic conductivity. In addition, the uniform Cl− binding environment leads to a low Cl− diffusion barrier of 0.37 eV, which is much smaller than that of VOCl (0.65 eV) and FeOCl (0.58 eV). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Discovering efficient and low CO selectivity non-noble heterogeneous catalysts toward formic acid (FA) dehydrogenation is vital for H2 energy systems. As a heating temperature is required to activate this reaction, the strategy of coupling a FA dehydrogenation reactor with a photothermal system possesses great potential for industrial applications. Herein, a sophisticated catalyst, a Mo1.98C1.02 porous film supported on carbon fiber paper, is demonstrated, with the advantages of a porous nanostructure, small nanoparticles and a carbon-supported structure simultaneously. The composite exhibits prominent thermal catalytic FA dehydrogenation, with a CO-free H2 generation rate of 0.79 L g−1 h−1 at 100 °C. Density functional theory calculations show that the formate route (*OCHOH → *OCOH + 1/2H2 → *OCO + 1/2H2 → CO2) is the minimum energy path for H2 and CO2 formation. Besides, a photothermal device was designed based on Bi2Te3/Cu, which can absorb and convert 1 kW m−2 irradiation into a high temperature of 240 °C, due to the high sunlight absorption, low heat conduction and low heat irradiation. Thus, a sunlight-driven thermal catalytic system was designed based on this device, with a H2 generation rate of 1.07 L g−1 h−1 under 0.25 kW m−2. This value is about two orders of magnitude faster than that of photocatalytic FA decomposition over reported non-precious photocatalysts. These results demonstrate that FA dehydrogenation can be realized under weak solar irradiation with the assistance of photothermal systems, facilitating industrial applications. Titanium sesquioxide (Ti2O3) nanopowders have been successfully synthesized using TiCl4 assisted hydrogen reduction method from P25 (TiO2) powders at 970 °C. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reveal its high purity. The temperature dependent XRD, resistance, and infrared absorption investigations exhibit Z-shaped curves (cell parameter a, resistance, and infrared transmittance) indicating the semiconductor-metal transition (SMT) in the range of 135-220 °C. With prolonging the annealing time, the starting temperature of SMT is found to move toward the low-temperature side, and this was also discussed. The c/a ratio alteration is considered to result in the modulation of property. Besides, the results are verified comparing with the theoretical calculation of band structure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Based on a Driving Forces-Pressure-State-Impact-Response (DPSIR) model, this paper takes a macroenvironmental, socioeconomic perspective to build an evaluation model to address sustainable Chinese wind power developments and to quantize the development results. From a combination of entropy weight and the Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) method, the sustainable wind power development level in China is examined, the development trends analyzed, and the trends and underlying laws identified, all of which provides new information for Chinese wind power sustainability. It was found that Chinese sustainable socioeconomic wind power development has been growing year on year. An interferon-mediated antiviral protein, 2′-5′ oligoadenylate synthetase 2, plays an important role in the antiviral response of interferons. In this study, 2′-5′ oligoadenylate synthetase 2 genes were cloned from Chinese domestic pigs. Bioinformatics analysis revealed that the 2024-bp long open reading fame encodes 707 amino acids. There are two conserved regions in this protein: the nucleotidyltransferase domain, and the 2′-5′ oligoadenylate synthetase domain (OAS). Genetic evolution analysis showed that the 2′-5′ oligoadenylate synthetase 2 gene in domestic pigs is closely related to that of cattle. There are multiple antigenic sites, no signal peptide, and no transmembrane region in the gene, which is predicted to be a hydrophilic protein. Secondary structures were found to be mainly alpha helix-based; its tertiary structure is close to that of humans and cattle, but not that of mice. Tissue distribution results indicated that this protein is distributed in multiple organs, with high distribution in the liver; it is mainly localized in the cytoplasm. PRRSV infection, interferon-beta, and Poly(I: C) treatment all promoted 2′-5′ oligoadenylate synthetase 2 gene expression. Overexpression and RNA silencing of porcine OAS2 inhibited and promoted PRRSV replication in cells, respectively. The inhibitory effect of porcine OAS2 was mainly dependent on RNase L, similar to what was predicted. NLRC3, a member of the NLR family, has been reported as a negative regulator of inflammatory signaling pathways in innate immune cells. However, the direct role of NLRC3 in modulation of CD4+ T-cell responses in infectious diseases has not been studied. In the present study, we showed that NLRC3 plays an intrinsic role by suppressing the CD4+ T cell phenotype in lung and spleen, including differentiation, activation, and proliferation. NLRC3 deficiency in CD4+ T cells enhanced the protective immune response against Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection. Finally, we demonstrated that NLRC3 deficiency promoted the activation, proliferation, and cytokine production of CD4+ T cells via negatively regulating the NF-κB and MEK-ERK signaling pathways. This study reveals a critical role of NLRC3 as a direct regulator of the adaptive immune response and its protective effects on immunity during M. tuberculosis infection. In Mycobacterium tuberculosis-infected macrophages, cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) expression considerably increases to defend the body against mycobacteria by regulating adaptive immunity and restoring the mitochondrial inner membrane. Moreover, in cancer cells, COX-2 enhances the autophagy machinery, an important bactericidal mechanism. However, the association between M. tuberculosis-induced COX-2 and autophagy-mediated antimycobacterial response has not been explored. Here, COX-2 expression silencing reduced the autophagy and bactericidal activity against intracellular M. tuberculosis, while COX-2 overexpression reversed the above effects. In addition, enhancement of bactericidal activity was suppressed by inhibiting autophagy in COX-2-overexpressing cells, indicating that COX-2 accelerated mycobacterial elimination by promoting autophagy. Furthermore, the regulatory effects of COX-2 on autophagy were mediated by its catalytic products, which functioned through inhibiting the protein kinase B/mammalian target of rapamycin pathway. Thus, COX-2 contributes to host defense against mycobacterial infection by promoting autophagy, establishing the basis for development of novel therapeutic agents against tuberculosis by targeting COX-2. Abstract: A route to realize strain engineering in weakly bonded heterostructures is presented. Such heterostructures, consisting of layered materials with a pronounced bond hierarchy of strong and weak bonds within and across their building blocks respectively, are anticipated to grow decoupled from each other. Hence, they are expected to be unsuitable for strain engineering as utilized for conventional materials which are strongly bonded isotropically. Here, it is shown for the first time that superlattices of layered chalcogenides (Sb2Te3/GeTe) behave neither as fully decoupled two‐dimensional (2D) materials nor as covalently bonded three‐dimensional (3D) materials. Instead, they form a novel class of 3D solids with an unparalleled atomic arrangement, featuring a distribution of lattice constants, which is tunable. A map to identify further material combinations with similar characteristic is given. It opens the way for the design of a novel class of artificial solids with unexplored properties. Absence of effective therapeutic methods for avascular necrosis of femoral head (ANFH) is still perplexing the world's medical community. Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) adoptive cell therapy combined with core decompression is a promising modality, which is highly dependent on the cellular activities of BMSCs. Hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) is a survival factor for BMSCs, yet the underlying mechanism is not fully elucidated. In this study, the effects of multiplicity of infections (MOIs) of recombinant adenovirus carrying HGF gene (rAd-HGF) on human BMSC proliferation and osteogenic differentiation were systemically examined. Infection of rAd-HGF produced secretory HGF and promoted hBMSC proliferation in a MOI-dependent manner, while the osteogenesis was also strengthened as indicated by enhanced calcium nodule formation with the strongest effects achieved at MOI = 250. Blocking the activities of c-MET or its downstream signaling pathways, WNT, ERK1/2, and PI3K/AKT led to differential consequents. Specifically, blockage of the WNT pathway significantly promoted osteogenic differentiation, which also showed additive effects when combined application with rAd-HGF. Our data demonstrated the pro-osteogenic effects of optimized MOIs of rAd-HGF, while inhibition of WNT pathway or activation of PI3K/AKT pathway may act as candidate adjuvant modalities for promoting osteogenic differentiation in rAd-HGF-modified hBMSC treatment on ANFH. Chalcogenide thin films are exciting candidates for electronic applications such as spintronic devices, non-volatile memories and thermoelectric materials. To achieve such applications the understanding of their thin film growth is of paramount importance. In this work the epitaxy of exemplary chalcogenides Sb2Te3 and GeTe on different surfaces of Si(111) with atomically sharp interfaces is presented and compared using plan-view transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction. It is shown that depending on the monolayer surface termination the resulting films present drastic differences in terms of film morphology and crystallinity. In particular, a profound difference is found between the films grown on H-passivated and Sb-passivated surfaces. In both cases, the out-of-plane texture is strongly c-axis oriented, but the case of Si(111)–H shows the frequent occurrence of random in-plane twist for both films, while for Si(111)–Sb this is strongly suppressed. The role of the substrate-film interface for the epitaxy is discussed and the consequences for the properties of the films are highlighted. In general, the insights of these results shed light on chalcogenide thin film growth for topological insulator, ferroelectric, thermoelectric and phase-change materials research. GeTe is a rather unconventional and complex compound from a fundamental point of view considering its very simple stoichiometry. Within this review, we first discuss the crystal structure of GeTe, focusing our attention on the bonding mechanism and on the distortion of the unit cell. This distortion is responsible for the ferroelectric properties of GeTe that are also considered here. Furthermore, we describe the amorphous phase and review the phase change material properties resorting to examples from several GeTe based alloys. Mycobacterium tuberculosis(M.tb), which causes tuberculosis, is a host-adapted intracellular pathogen that can live within macrophages owning to its ability to arrest phagolysosome biogenesis. The guanine nucleotide exchange factor H1 (GEF-H1) may contribute to the phagocytosis of bacteria by macrophages through mediating the crosstalk between microtubules and the actin cytoskeleton. Its role inShigellainfection has been determined but little is known about the role of GEF-H1 in mycobacterial infection. In the present study, we demonstrated that GEF-H1 functioned as a key regulator of the macrophage-mediated anti-mycobacterial response. We found that both mRNA and protein expression levels of GEF-H1 were significantly upregulated in macrophage during mycobacterial infection. Moreover, silencing of GEF-H1 with specific siRNAs reduced the phosphorylation of p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase and TANK binding kinase 1 as well as the expression of interleukin-1β (IL-1β), IL-6, and interferon-β (IFN-β), without affecting nitric oxide production or autophagy. Importantly, GEF-H1 depletion attenuated macrophages-mediated mycobacterial phagocytosis and elimination. Taken together, our data supported that GEF-H1 was a novel regulator of inflammatory cytokine production and mycobacterial elimination, and may serve as a novel potential target for clinical treatment of tuberculosis. Hierarchically structured nitrogen-doped carbon nanotube (NCNT) composites, with copper (Cu) nanoparticles embedded uniformly within the nanotube walls and cobalt oxide (Co xO y) nanoparticles decorated on the nanotube surfaces, are fabricated via a combinational process. This process involves the growth of Cu embedded CNTs by low- and high-temperature chemical vapor deposition, post-treatment with ammonia for nitrogen doping of these CNTs, precipitation-assisted separation of NCNTs from cobalt nitrate aqueous solution, and finally thermal annealing for Co xO y decoration. Theoretical calculations show that interaction of Cu nanoparticles with CNT walls can effectively decrease the work function of CNT surfaces and improve adsorption of hydroxyl ions onto the CNT surfaces. Thus, the activities of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are significantly enhanced. Because of this benefit, further nitrogen doping, and synergistic coupling between Co xO y and NCNTs, Cu@NCNT/Co xO y composites exhibit ORR activity comparable to that of commercial Pt/C catalysts and high OER activity (outperforming that of IrO2 catalysts). More importantly, the composites display superior long-term stability for both ORR and OER. This simple but general synthesis protocol can be extended to design and synthesis of other metal/metal oxide systems for fabrication of high-performance carbon-based electrocatalysts with multifunctional catalytic activities. GeTe–Sb2Te3 superlattices have attracted major interest in the field of phase-change memories due to their improved properties compared with their mixed counterparts. However, their crystal structure and resistance-switching mechanism are currently not clearly understood. In this work epitaxial GeTe–Sb2Te3 superlattices have been grown with different techniques and were thoroughly investigated to unravel the structure of their crystalline state with particular focus on atomic stacking and van-der-Waals bonding. It is found that, due to the bonding anisotropy of GeTe and Sb2Te3, the materials intermix to form van-der-Waals heterostructures of Sb2Te3 and stable GeSbTe. Moreover, it is found through annealing experiments that intermixing is stronger for higher temperatures. The resulting ground state structure contradicts the dominant ab-initio results in the literature, requiring revisions of the proposed switching mechanisms. Overall, these findings shed light on the bonding nature of GeTe–Sb2Te3 superlattices and open a way to the understanding of their functionality. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

A novel α-Fe2O3/graphene composite is prepared by a simple in situ wet chemistry approach. The α-Fe2O3 particles with diameter around 130 nm are homogeneously anchored on graphene nanosheets to form a 3D quasi-laminated architecture. Such a well-organized flexible structure can offer sufficient void space to facilitate the electrolyte penetration, alleviate the effect of the volume change of α-Fe2O3 particles and avoid particle–particle aggregation during lithium insertion/desertion. In addition, graphene not only improves the electric conductivity of the composite electrode but also maintains the structural integrity of the composite electrode during long-term cycling. As anode material for Li-ion batteries, the α-Fe2O3/graphene composite electrode exhibits a stable capacity of 742 mAh g−1 up to 50 cycles. The synthesis technique is suitable for practical large-scale production of graphene-based metal oxide composites as advanced electrode materials for rechargeable Li-ion batteries. Simple Summary: When cells undergo epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT) they gain characteristics of stem cells. We investigated the mechanism by which the EMT transcription factor SNAI1 induces stem cell features. In these studies, we observed that SNAI1 represses a microRNA that maintains differentiation, let-7. This microRNA is lost in cancer, and its loss correlates with poor prognosis. In breast, pancreatic, and ovarian cancer cell lines the cell stemness in increased by SNAI1 overexpression and reduced by SNAI1 knockdown. We extended the ovarian cancer results to patient-derived cells, and to a mouse xenograft model. In mice, we used nanoparticles to deliver small RNAs (RNAi) targeting SNAI1, resulting in restoration of let-7 levels, inhibition of stemness, and reduced tumor burden. Our studies validate nanoparticle-delivered RNAi targeting SNAI1 as a clinically relevant approach. We aimed to determine the mechanism of epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT)-induced stemness in cancer cells. Cancer relapse and metastasis are caused by rare stem-like cells within tumors. Studies of stem cell reprogramming have linked let-7 repression and acquisition of stemness with the EMT factor, SNAI1. The mechanisms for the loss of let-7 in cancer cells are incompletely understood. In four carcinoma cell lines from breast cancer, pancreatic cancer, and ovarian cancer and in ovarian cancer patient-derived cells, we analyzed stem cell phenotype and tumor growth via mRNA, miRNA, and protein expression, spheroid formation, and growth in patient-derived xenografts. We show that treatment with EMT-promoting growth factors or SNAI1 overexpression increased stemness and reduced let-7 expression, while SNAI1 knockdown reduced stemness and restored let-7 expression. Rescue experiments demonstrate that the pro-stemness effects of SNAI1 are mediated via let-7. In vivo, nanoparticle-delivered siRNA successfully knocked down SNAI1 in orthotopic patient-derived xenografts, accompanied by reduced stemness and increased let-7 expression, and reduced tumor burden. Chromatin immunoprecipitation demonstrated that SNAI1 binds the promoters of various let-7 family members, and luciferase assays revealed that SNAI1 represses let-7 transcription. In conclusion, the SNAI1/let-7 axis is an important component of stemness pathways in cancer cells, and this study provides a rationale for future work examining this axis as a potential target for cancer stem cell-specific therapies. Message framing plays an important role in advertising strategies and has been studied from various perspectives in different behavioral researches. In this study Event Rated Potentials technique helped to examine the neural mechanism of message framing effect on self-conscious emotions of pride and guilt regarding consumer purchase intention in the context of green marketing. Behavioral results showed that participants ranked higher on positive framing compared to negative framing. ERP results declared that N1 component was elicited by positive framed message with emotion of pride and guilt, reflecting use of attentional resources to acquire potential benefits at first stage of processing emotional information. At the second stage P2 was higher for negative framing containing pride and guilt slogan, showing more attention towards processing emotional information about potential loss. At the third stage LPP component portray that both positive and negative framing is supported by guilt emotion when processing emotional information in decision making. Electron transport through a single-molecule magnet [NEt4]3[Mn3Zn2(salox)3O(N3)6Cl2] is investigated by spin-polarized density functional theory combined with the Keldysh nonequilibrium Green's function technique. Our study demonstrates that spin-filtering effect and negative differential resistance exist in the ground state of this molecule. When the magnetic state of the molecule is changed from its ground state to the spin-flip state, substantial changes are induced not only in energy levels of the molecule, but also in the coupling of molecular states with eigenstates of Ag(100) nano-electrodes, which lead to the disappearance of spin-filtering effect and negative differential resistance. A multi‐step synthesis approach for hierarchically structured nitrogen doped carbon nanotubes (NCNTs) is reported by Jong‐Beom Baek and co‐workers in article number 1605717. The walls are embedded uniformly with copper (Cu) nanoparticles and the outer wall surfaces are decorated with cobalt oxide (CoxOy) nanoparticles. In this paper, LiFePO4/C microspheres consisting of closely packed nanosheets have been synthesized via a simple solvothermal method and a subsequent carbon coating procedure. In order to clarify the microstructure of the product, the as-prepared composite has been characterized by various techniques, such as powder x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectrum, Raman spectroscopy and high-resolution transmission microscopy. Results show that the LiFePO4/C microspheres are uniform with a particle size of 8–10 μm. The microspheres are composed of densely compacted nanosheets with a thickness of 20–30 nm. The gaps between the nanosheets are estimated to be 10–50 nm; a carbon layer with a thickness of ∼4 nm is coated on the surface of the LiFePO4 spheres. The tap density of the LiFePO4/C composite reaches up to 1.5 g cm−3. As cathode material for Li-ion batteries, the composite exhibits a high capacity: 155 mAh g−1, 144 mAh g−1, 129 mAh g−1, and 104 mAh g−1 at 0.1 C, 1 C, 5 C and 10 C, respectively. Furthermore, the material also shows good cycling stability at both low and high current rates.
