Police officers typically are the first responders to a mental health crisis call. Often, they do not have the required training or tools to deal with these types of calls. This problem is exacerbated in small police departments, which often have fewer resources than large police departments. Alternative programs are needed in smaller police agencies to assist with these issues that officers are facing. This study uses a mixed methods approach to evaluate a recently developed mental health liaison internship program implemented in a small police department in Pennsylvania, exploring whether the program affected police morale and calls for service. Qualitative data from officer interviews indicated officers had a positive perception of the mental health liaison. Compared to the year before the internship program started, emergency calls for service for emotionally disturbed persons increased by 47% during the year the internship program was implemented, although this could be due to citizens trying to connect with the mental health liaison. Additionally, these calls were concentrated in four main addresses, comprising 30% of the emergency calls for service for emotionally disturbed persons in 2021 and 2022. These findings are discussed in light of the extant literature. Background: Dental trauma is one of the most serious and frequent oral problems in active children as well as adolescents worldwide. Anyone can be a victim. Hence, the level of competence in the management cannot be undermined. Aim: This study aims to evaluate the experience and confidence in the management of dental trauma among dental students and fresh graduate dentists in Benin City, Nigeria. Methodology: This questionnaire-based, analytical, and cross-sectional study utilized a self-administered questionnaire containing 15 closed- and open-ended questions to garner data from respondents. Data from 95 respondents were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Studies software version 26.0 (IBM Corporation, Chicago, Illinois, USA.), and both univariate and bivariate analyses were used in this study. Results: A substantial proportion of respondents 73 (76.8%) had never managed any case of dental trauma. A relatively higher proportion of respondents were more confident in managing cases of enamel fracture 18 (18.9%), enamel infraction 17 (17.9%), and enamel-dentine fracture 12 (12.6%) as compared to other more complicated fractures. Conclusion: The experience and level of confidence in the management of dental trauma among dental students and fresh graduate dentists were found to be poor, and they were more confident in managing less complicated cases of dental trauma. Background: Duty hours for internships and residents have received globally criticism in recent years. Working hours highly affect the trainees' well-being, patient care, and education programs. There is no consensus about the benefit of reducing working hours. The present study aimed to assess how reducing the working hours can influence interns on some aspects of training, well-being, and patient care. Method: This study was conducted in Internal Medicine Department of Imam Reza Hospital in Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, Iran. The present researchers reduced the working hours from 20 to 10 hours in a shift for 6 weeks in their department for interns, as well as a self-administered and validated questionnaire, which has previously been evaluated for the validity and reliability, was given to internal medicine residents and interns. At the end of the study, data were analyzed by SPSS. Results: A total of 11 residents and 23 interns completed the survey. Limited working hours had significant beneficial effects according to participants' opinions in many domains with duty hour restrictions (P<0.05). These included subdomains such as, increasing training and participating in their classes, well-being, improving the quality of file completion, more responsibility, better history taking, and less medical mistakes. Conclusions: As indicated, 83% of residents and 73% of interns reached a consensus on reducing the working-hours of the clinical rounds in many subdomains with duty hour reform. Objective: Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the number one cause of death globally. Emergency cases related to CVDs have an important place among all emergency applications. This study was conducted to determine the competencies of intern physicians studying at the Faculty of Medicine in the Republic of Türkiye regarding their perspective on cardiology education and expertise, their ability to diagnose and treat cardiovascular emergencies and their ability to manage these emergency cases. Materials and Methods: The study included 286 intern physicians, 149 of whom were women (52.1%) and 137 of whom were men (47.9%), who completed the survey sent to social messaging programs. Physicians were asked about the adequacy of the education at the medical schools they attended and case questions regarding cardiovascular emergencies, including basic biochemical and radiological imaging methods, and their answers were recorded. Results: The average age of the intern physicians participating in the study was found to be 24.1±1.3 years. In questions regarding medical and specialty education, only 57% of intern physicians stated that they received adequate medical education, and 76.6% stated that the Covid-19 pandemic affected their medical education. The part that physicians are most hesitant about making the correct diagnosis and applying treatment in cardiovascular emergencies is medication administration. Students are required to complete supervised practice hours prior to becoming Registered Dietitians and Physician Assistants. Research suggests that environmental and social factors affect dietetic interns' diets during their internship, although these factors have not been studied among physician assistant interns. This cross-sectional study utilized an online survey to compare dietetic interns' (n = 81) and physician assistant interns' (n = 79) fruit and vegetable intake, food security, barriers to healthy eating, and empowerment for making healthy dietary choices during an internship. Differences were assessed via independent t-tests and chi-square distributions. The significance was set at p < 0.05. Dietetic interns had a higher vegetable intake (p = 0.002) while physician assistant interns had higher rates of food insecurity (p = 0.040). Dietetic interns reported a greater impact on their dietary choices due to mental fatigue (p = 0.006), while physician assistant interns' dietary choices were more heavily impacted by peer influence, interactions with patients, and interactions with preceptors (p < 0.05). There was not a group difference in overall empowerment (p = 0.157), although both groups rated empowerment for asking for help with food and nutrition challenges the lowest of the empowerment sub-items. The present study aims to investigate the attitudes of Shumen University students participating in the Student Internships – Phase 2 project (2020 – 2023). Background: Nurse leaders have a crucial impact in healthcare settings. Hospitals require qualified nurses with leadership skills to provide healthy work environments and enhance the outcomes related to staff nurses and patients. This study aimed to investigate the effect of nursing experience on leadership skills among staff nurses and intern nursing students. Methods: A mixed methods design was applied (quantitative survey design for quantitative part and open-ended questions for qualitative part). Convenience sampling of staff nurses and intern nursing students in Saudi Arabia was applied. There were148 participants who completed the survey of the quantitative part, and 50 of them completed the qualitative part. Participants completed the Leadership Practice Inventory Questionnaire. SPSS v26 was used to analyze quantitative part, and thematic analysis was used to analyze qualitative part. Results: This study found a significance difference among participating groups regarding to the years of experience (F = 5.05, p = 0.00). Three themes were found for the qualitative part which were strategies to enhance leadership skills, factors affecting leadership skills, and obstacles facing participants related to leadership skills. The qualitative data also revealed that participants found that clinical supervision and education ways to enhance the leadership skills, while work pressure, work environment and communication were obstacles of developing their leadership skills. Conclusion: Leadership skills are considered as a significant component of the function of qualified nurses and should be viewed as central to intern nursing students' learning development. Moreover, leadership skills are essential for the patient and organization outcomes. Nursing colleges and educators play an important role in enhancing to leadership skills as well as experience. Background: The purpose of this study was to determine intern physicians' attitudes and beliefs toward obesity and individuals with obesity and the frequency at which they encounter discriminatory language in their work environments. Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed with intern physicians at the Ondokuz Mayıs University Medical Faculty in Samsun, Türkiye. A questionnaire was employed for data collection (Appendix). Two hundred eighteen (82.2%) interns took part in the study. The questionnaire consisted of 53 questions in five sections, and included the attitudes toward obese persons (ATOP) and beliefs about obese persons (BAOP) scales. Results: The interns most frequently cited genetic factors (98.1%) and endocrine disorder-metabolic disorders (98.1%) as non-behavioral causes of obesity, and overeating (96.2%) and physical immobility (96.2%) as behavioral causes. Lifestyle changes and exercise were most frequently recommended for treatment. The interns' attitudes toward individuals with obesity were very slightly negative, but close to neutral. Analysis showed that 46.8% of the interns reported hearing members of academic staff, intern physicians, or health workers make negative or derogatory comments or jokes about obese patients during their education, while 22.0% reported witnessing an obese patient being subjected to discriminatory treatment in the hospital environment. Conclusion: Medical faculties must develop curricula aimed at comprehensively addressing obesity-related bias. Such a curriculum should allow students to reflect on their biases, be aimed at reducing the effect of those biases on patient communication, and involve strategies directed toward eliminating those effects from physicians' treatment decisions. Optimal health depends on the intricate interplay of genetics, environment, and nutrition, encompassing aspects of physical, mental, and social well-being. This study rigorously assesses the dietary habits of final-year medical students during their internship, with a specific focus on understanding the implications of the COVID-19 pandemic. The overarching goal is to advocate for and contribute to the fostering of healthier lifestyles among medical students. Materials/Methods: This descriptive research aimed to survey the entire cohort comprising 200 final-year medical students enrolled in the Faculty of Medicine at a public university. Among them, 125 participants actively participated in the online dietary survey conducted from September to October 2020. Results: During their internship, most participants had two (35.2%) or three (48.8%) daily meals, often skipping breakfast (40.0%) due to lack of appetite or opportunities. Approximately 77% maintained underweight or normal weight. The majority (95.2%) lacked a specific dietary pattern. Protein and carbohydrates were favored (75.3% for females, 96.2% for males), with more females choosing fruits and vegetables. Conclusions: This study underscores the imperative for an all-encompassing nutrition education framework within medical student curricula. It unveils discernible variations in dietary practices, encompassing the consumption of nuts, sugary foods, energy drinks, and tea/coffee, stratified by gender and body mass index. Purpose of Review: The purpose of this review is to highlight literature regarding resident boot camps published across surgical specialties with a focus on urology. Herein, we discuss different boot camp iterations, their results, and the integration of simulation into their curriculum. We review program elements such as curriculum, course length, and efficacy as well as areas for continued investigation. Recent Findings: The field of urology has grown in both the breadth of knowledge and the complexity of procedures. With urology now being an integrated surgical subspecialty, interns often start on the urology service despite limited experience navigating this unique specialty. The boot camp model is one method by which interns and junior residents participate in consolidated training programs to best prepare them for a patient-facing role and the day-to-day demands of residency. Urology programs, both in the USA and abroad, have begun integrating boot camps into their training programs with positive results. Summary: Urology boot camps can be a valuable part of training programs for interns to quickly establish medical knowledge, skills, and efficiency. Almost half of NHS doctors are junior doctors, while high proportions are women and/or Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) individuals. Discrimination against this population is associated with poorer career-related outcomes and unequal representation. We aimed to qualitatively explore junior doctors' experience of workplace racial and gender-based discrimination, and its impact on their psychological distress (PD). In this study, we carried out a secondary analysis of data from a UK-based parent study about junior doctors' working cultures and conditions. Interview data was examined using thematic analysis. Transcripts (n = 14) documenting experiences of race and/or gender-based discrimination were sampled and analysed from 21 in-depth interviews conducted with UK junior doctors. Four themes were generated about the experiences and perpetrators of discrimination, the psychological impact of discrimination, and organisational interventions that tackle discrimination. Discrimination in various forms was reported, from racially charged threats to subtle microaggressions. Participants experienced profoundly elevated levels of PD, feeling fearful, undermined, and under-confident. Discrimination is associated with elevated levels of PD, whilst negatively impacting workforce sustainability and retention. This reduces the opportunity for more diversity in NHS medical leadership. We encourage NHS hospitals to review their policies about discrimination and develop in-person workshops that focus on recognising, challenging, and reporting workplace discrimination. The question of whether trainees/interns should be classified as employees, and therefore must be paid, has been adjudicated throughout the court system for over three-quarters of a century. The most recent United States Department of Labor Wage and Hour Division Fact Sheet #71 cites judicial rulings spanning from 1947 through 2017, including: Walling v. Portland Terminal (U.S. 1947), Solis v. Laurelbrook Sanitarium & Sch. (6th Cir. 2011), Schumann v. Collier Anesthesia (11th Cir. 2015), Glatt v. Fox Searchlight Pictures (2nd Cir. 2015), and Benjamin v. B&H Education (9th Cir. 2017). These cases provide useful rationale for analyzing the proper classification of the relationship between trainees/interns and employers. This paper summarizes several of the federal cases that have played an integral role in answering the employment classification question including those noted on the most recently updated Department of Labor Wage and Hour Division Fact Sheet #71. This paper also discusses the evolution of the factors considered in evaluating employment relationships and provides insight into judicial influences on the Department of Labor's guidance on determining proper employment classifications, including the incorporation of text from legal cases within the publications of the Wage and Hour Division Fact Sheet #71. Purpose: This research aims to analyze the impact of work engagement, organization culture and leader-member exchange (LMX) on an intern's intention to join the organization during the e-internship. The COVID-19 pandemic influenced interns and organizations to undertake the way internships. Internships from home affected the interaction and communication between the organization and interns. This study also investigates the moderating role of work engagement and LMX on the intern's intention to join the organization. Design/methodology/approach: Data was collected from 190 interns through an online questionnaire. Standardized questionnaires were used in the study to measure all the variables. Findings: The research shows that perceived Organizational Culture and Work Engagement are essential in impacting an intern's intention to join the organization. Also, it was found that the Work Engagement and LMX do not moderate the relationship between Organizational Culture and the intention of an intern to join the organization. Research limitations/implications: They include factors which are not being considered for the research or are beyond the control of the researcher. This paper had a couple of limitations as well. The sample size taken for the research was less. More respondents would have given better results. Other factors that may influence the intention of an intern to join his/her respective organizations were not considered. This study only considered the three variables of Work Engagement, LMX and Organizational Culture. Intervening effects of other variables if any were assumed to be absent. Other intricacies may be there in the research variables that were beyond the scope of this study. Practical implications: The results of the present study are of use to organizations which are interested in converting their interns to full-time employees. These results clearly indicate the importance of organization culture in impacting an intern's intention to join the organization, therefore organizations can make their policies, procedures and practices which confirm with the requirements to e-internship. Organizations need to empower the interns so that they feel confident to take decisions during e-internships and organizations also need to communicate and instill the core values among their interns, this alignment with core values is critical for ensuring a good person–organization fit. Also, managers should ensure that the culture of the organization is conducive to the development and mental well-being of the interns, by taking steps such as fostering team spirit, ensuring a customer-centric culture, open and amicable communication, navigating change admirably, and staying true to the core values of the organization. A holistic and wholesome organization culture will ensure that the organization is able to attract and retain the right talent. Background: Patient safety is associated with patient outcomes. However, there is insufficient evidence of patient safety in the dental field. This study aimed to compare incidents reported by dentists and physicians, compare the type of errors made by them, and identify how dentists prevent dental errors. Methods: A mixed-methods study was conducted using open data from the Japan Council for Quality Health Care database. A total of 6071 incident reports submitted for the period 2016–2020 were analyzed; the number of dentists' incident reports was 144, and the number of physicians' incident reports was 5927. Results: The percentage of dental intern reporters was higher than that of medical intern reporters (dentists: n = 12, 8.3%; physicians: n = 180, 3.0%; p = 0.002). The percentage of reports by dentists was greater than that by physicians: wrong part of body treated (dentists: n = 26, 18.1%; physicians: n = 120, 2.0%; p < 0.001), leaving foreign matter in the body (dentists: n = 15, 10.4%; physicians: n = 182, 3.1%; p < 0.001), and accidental ingestion (dentists: n = 8, 5.6%; physicians: n = 8, 0.1%; p < 0.001), and aspiration of foreign body (dentists: n = 5, 3.4%; physicians: n = 33, 0.6%; p = 0.002). The percentage of each type of prevention method utilized was as follows: software 27.8% (n = 292), hardware (e.g., developing a new system) 2.1% (n = 22), environment (e.g., coordinating the activities of staff) 4.2% (n = 44), liveware (e.g., reviewing procedure, double checking, evaluating judgement calls made) 51.6% (n = 542), and liveware-liveware (e.g., developing adequate treatment plans, conducting appropriate postoperative evaluations, selecting appropriate equipment and adequately trained medical staff) 14.3% (n = 150). Conclusion: Hardware and software and environment components accounted for a small percentage of the errors made, while the components of liveware and liveware-liveware errors were larger. Foundation years or internships are an important period for junior doctors to apply their knowledge and gain clinical competency. Experiences gained during the foundation years or internships are likely to inform newly qualified doctors' opinions about how they want to continue their career. We aimed to understand how medical doctors' internship experiences influence their career intention/decision. We conducted qualitative evidence synthesis using meta-ethnography. We searched six electronic bibliographic databases for papers published between 2000–2020 and included papers exploring how foundation years or internship experiences shape doctors' career intention/decisions, including in relation to migration, public/private/dual practice preference, rural/urban preference, and specialty choice. We used the GRADE-CERQual framework to rate confidence in review findings. We examined 23 papers out of 6085 citations screened. We abstracted three high-level inter-related themes across 14 conceptual categories: (1) Deciding the personal best fit both clinically and in general (which option is 'more me'?) through hands-on and real-life experiences (2) Exploring, experiencing and witnessing workplace norms; and (3) Worrying about the future in terms of job market policies, future training and professional development opportunities. Confidence in findings varied but was rated high in 8 conceptual categories. Our meta-ethnographic review revealed a range of ways in which internship experience shapes medical doctors' career intentions/decisions allowing us to produce a broad conceptual model of this phenomenon. The results highlight the importance of ensuring sufficient, positive and inspiring clinical exposure, improving workplace environment, relationship and culture, refraining from undermining specific specialities and communicating contractual and job market policies early on to young doctors, in order to attract doctors to less popular specialties or work locations where they are most needed. Background: In a health-care setup, interpersonal communication plays a pivotal role in the attainment of professional outcomes. Dressing is an indirect mode of communication. Since ancient times, it is assumed that doctor's clothing have a positive effect on the minds of patients. This survey evaluates the perception of interns from dental sciences regarding the impact of dressing on professional performance at workplace. Materials and Methods: A self-designed questionnaire was distributed among a batch of interns who were willing to participate in the survey. Seventy-six interns returned the responses which were complete without any duplication. All the survey forms were scrutinized and the data were collated. Qualitative analysis of the assembled data was performed to evaluate intern's perception about the association between dressing and professional performance at workplace. Results: Results of the survey demonstrated that 81.6% of the participants dress up to work as per their temperament. About 65.8% of the participants believed that dental professionals should choose formal wear for workplace settings. Majority of the participants, i.e., 67.1%, believed that dressing affects perception on personality traits such as dignity and character of a professional. A wide number of interns perceived that dressing alters the behavior of self, patients, and colleagues (55.3%, 71.1%, and 68.4%, respectively). The result of this survey also showed a positive correlation between dressing and professional traits such as confidence, responsibility, and efficiency (75.0%, 63.2%, and 63.2%, respectively). Notably, 55.3% opined against enforcing a dress code for dental institutions/dental offices. Conclusion: The result of the study represents the positive influence of dressing on professional performance at workplace in dentistry as perceived by interns from the faculty of dental sciences. Introduction: By conducting a proper evaluation, it is possible to identify the strengths and weaknesses of clinical education, and by strengthening the positive points and eliminating the shortcomings, steps can be taken in the direction of reforming the educational system. This study was conducted with the aim of investigating the three-circle model of Dundee University in determining the essential duties of clinical students of Jahrom University of Medical Sciences. Materials and Methods: This research was carried out using a cross-sectional descriptive method. The subjects of studied were interns of Jahrom University of Medical Sciences (Intern) who were working in internal, surgery, pediatrics, women and events departments. Sampling was done in an easy and accessible way (from different sections by age and sex). Data collection was done using a researcher-made questionnaire. The questionnaire was distributed among 50 interns in Jahrom Faculty of Medical Sciences in Peymaniyeh and Motahari hospitals who were present in different departments. Data analysis was done using spss software version 21 as well as descriptive statistical tests (mean, percentage and standard deviation) and inferential tests (regression and Spearman). Results: The highest level of satisfaction with the quality of clinical experiences gained in clinical internship was in the surgery department (63.2%) and the lowest in the family medicine department (63.2%). The highest satisfaction score of students in social medicine, internal medicine, psychiatry and surgery department was from observing at least one professor during physical examination, and the highest satisfaction score of students in pediatric department was a good opportunity to follow the progress of patients' treatment. The majority of the students considered the training in patient interviewing skills (65.8%), taking care of hospitalized patients (65.8%) and doctor-patient communication skills (65.8%) as sufficient (suitable and good). Also, the majority of the students considered the educational training in the field of doctor-patient communication skills using an interpreter if needed (63.2%) and caring for elderly patients (65.8%) insufficient. The majority of the students found the educational training in the field of medical data recording (65.8%) and confidentiality and privacy of the patient (81.6%) to be sufficient (suitable and good). Also, the majority of students considered education in the field of medical economics (35.1%) and population-based medicine (31.6%) to be insufficient. This scenario highlights the challenge of graduate unemployment in South Africa which raises concerns about the functionality of the higher education system and the employability of the graduates it produces. The purpose of this study is to present insight into graduates' self-reported learning outcomes after completion of the Graduate Internship program which has been developed into a framework for implementing effective internship programmes to ensure the successful transition of graduates from the academic environment to the workplace. A qualitative research method was used to investigate the problem of graduate employability and an interview guide was used to collect data from 'graduates' on how the internship program enabled their employment. Introduction: The transition from medical student to houseman is well recognised as a stressful period for newly qualified doctors. This stress is likely to be heightened when the transition occurs during a pandemic. We aimed to evaluate the perceived stress levels of housemen as they begin housemanship and explore their sentiments and preparedness in starting work amidst the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Methods: Housemen starting work at a tertiary institution in Singapore in May 2020 completed the following: (1) Perceived Stress Scale, (2) open-ended questions on perceived challenges and concerns and (3) questionnaire on preparedness and confidence in starting work. Descriptive statistics were used to analyse quantitative data and modified thematic analysis performed for qualitative data. Results: Sixty-one housemen participated. Thirty-five (57.4%) reported high perceived stress. The themes for perceived challenges in this transition included coping with constant change, lack of reliable information from authorities, dealing with disappointment, physical fatigue, and loss of autonomy. The themes for concerns in beginning housemanship elicited relate to clinical competence, transitioning into new responsibilities, risk of infection with COVID-19, senior expectations, physical fatigue and training-related concerns. Despite these challenges and concerns, housemen were prepared to begin work during this pandemic. Conclusion: Housemen transitioning during this pandemic experienced additional stressors and unique challenges pertaining to working in a pandemic. Encouragingly, they remain prepared to start work. Academic Reader - Individuals with disabilities are employed at a rate approximately 40% lower than their counterparts without disabilities (Erickson et al., 2022). Research shows that there are significant benefits, for the individual and the business, to the hiring of individuals with disabilities (Lindsay et al., 2018). Despite the documented benefits, individuals with disabilities continue to be underemployed. Using a case study design, the authors interviewed a young man who participated in the Project SEARCH employment training program for individuals with disabilities to get his perspective on the journey to competitive, integrated employment. The exploratory, qualitative case study was designed as a series of virtual interviews targeting the transition from a Project SEARCH intern to a full-time skills trainer working with new Project SEARCH interns (Yin, 2017). The authors identified four themes through the data analysis process which are described in detail as they relate to this young man's journey and the employability of people with disabilities. General Public - People with disabilities are employed at a rate much lower than people without disabilities (Erickson et al., 2022). People with disabilities can be excellent employees who bring a wide range of skills and abilities to their work. Businesses may experience increased productivity and positive publicity as benefits to hiring people with disabilities (Lindsay et al., 2018). Background: The COVID-19 pandemic necessitated an enforced 8-week induction period (18 May to 12 July 2020) for all new interns in Ireland. These unprecedented circumstances presented a unique opportunity to assess this induction period. Aim: To assess the impact of a prolonged induction period on the technical abilities of interns embarking on their clinical careers. Method: We distributed a 12-item questionnaire to new interns at our institution during the COVID-19 pandemic. Section 1 of the questionnaire was designed to assess the rate of self-reported improvement in the successful and independent execution of practical 'intern' tasks. Section 2 of the questionnaire captured the subjective experience of interns during this time in relation to the effectiveness of an 8-week induction period with senior intern support available. Statistical analysis of categorical predictor and ordinal outcome variables was performed using the two-sample Wilcoxon rank-sum (Mann-Whitney) test. Results: Our results demonstrated a statistically significant improvement in the proficiency at first attempt phlebotomy in week 8 compared with week 1 (p < 0.0001). There was a significant improvement in placing first-attempt peripheral IV lines in week 8 compared with week 1 (p < 0.001). Regarding the need for senior assistance, we demonstrated a statistically significant reduction in week 8 compared with week 1 (p = 0.046). There were 95.56% (n = 43) of interns that said they would recommend the induction period for future incoming interns. Conclusion: The COVID-19 pandemic has inadvertently identified a model of internship induction that benefits interns, their colleagues and their patients through the production of more technically capable interns. Purpose: Universities have traditionally focused on imparting theoretical knowledge, which graduates then transfer to the workplace. However, the unpredictable modern workplace makes this transfer less certain. Whilst the gap between theory and practice has often been considered from an employer and academic standpoint, less is known about the graduate perspective. The purpose of this study is to determine the ways in which theoretical knowledge and practical experience interact for graduating students. Design/methodology/approach: The views of 86 undergraduate business approaching graduation were gathered on how they applied theory to practice during their recent internship. Findings: Graduating students apply theory that they have learnt at university through the direct application of fundamental knowledge and through workplace experience, which built on and deepened the knowledge accumulated at university. The findings indicate that there is, indeed, a gap between theory and practice but that employability skills may assist in the transfer process. Research limitations/implications: The research broadens the understanding of how theoretical knowledge is applied in practice and helps to determine if graduating students are prepared to meet the demands of an ever-changing workplace. Practical implications: The results give us insight into how theory and practice interact for graduating students and give support to universities further exploring experiential learning opportunities for students and continuing to the development of employability skills. Originality/value: The findings encourage a more nuanced debate regarding the role of universities and that both the provision of core theoretical concept and employability skills are necessary for graduates to effectively use their academic education in the modern workplace. Aim: The aim of this study was to assess compliance with standard precautions by Saudi nursing interns who were undergoing their internship training in four governmental tertiary teaching hospitals in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and to determine factors predictive of this. Background: Cross‐transmission and infection prevention when delivering care must be strictly followed by nursing interns by complying with standard precautions during internship training. Design The study employed a descriptive‐correlational and cross‐sectional design. Methods: A total of 224 nursing interns participated in the study by completing the Compliance with Standard Precautions Scale Arabic version between March 2017 and June 2017. Results/Findings A high overall compliance rate (84.8%) was observed. Nursing interns reported the highest compliance score in changing gloves between each patient contact and the lowest score in disposing of sharps boxes only when full. Nursing interns in hospital D showed the highest compliance rate over those in other hospitals. Age, sex, marital status, months in internship training and attendance of nursing interns in infection control seminars/trainings influenced their standard precautions compliance. Conclusion: The study revealed good compliance by nursing interns with standard precautions. However, regular educational and clinical interventions are still needed to improve some areas and to ensure the continuity of high levels of compliance in other areas of standard precautions among nursing interns. Introduction: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has brought about additional challenges beyond the usual transitional stresses faced by a newly qualified doctor. We aimed to evaluate the impact of COVID-19 on interns' stress, burnout, emotions, and implications on their training, while exploring their coping mechanisms and resilience levels. Methods: Newly graduated doctors interning in a Paediatric department in Singapore, who experienced escalation of the pandemic from January to April 2020, were invited to participate. Participants completed the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), Maslach's Burnout Inventory (MBI), and Connor Davidson Resilience Scale 25-item (CD-RISC 25) pre-pandemic and 4 months into COVID-19. Group interviews were conducted to supplement the quantitative responses to achieve study aims. Results: Response rate was 100% (n=10) for post-exposure questionnaires and group interviews. Despite working through the pandemic, interns' stress levels were not increased, burnout remained low, while resilience remained high. Four themes emerged from the group interviews - the impacts of the pandemic on their psychology, duties, training, as well as protective mechanisms. Their responses, particularly the institutional mechanisms and individual coping strategies, enabled us to understand their unexpected low burnout and high resilience despite the pandemic. Conclusion: This study demonstrated that it is possible to mitigate stress, burnout and preserve resilience of vulnerable healthcare workers such as interns amidst a pandemic. The study also validated a multifaceted approach that targets institutional, faculty as well as individual levels, can ensure the continued wellbeing of healthcare workers even in challenging times. Background: Appropriate and well-resourced medical internship training is important to ensure psychological health and well-being of doctors in training and also to recruit and retain these doctors. However, most reviews focused on clinical competency of medical interns instead of the non-clinical aspects of training. In this scoping review, we aim to review what tools exist to measure medical internship experience and summarize the major domains assessed.Method: The authors searched MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, ERIC, and the Cochrane Library for peer-reviewed studies that provided quantitative data on medical intern's (house officer, foundation year doctor, etc.) internship experience and published between 2000 and 2019. Three reviewers screened studies for eligibility with inclusion criteria. Data including tools used, key themes examined, and psychometric properties within the study population were charted, collated, and summarized. Tools that were used in multiple studies, and tools with internal validity or reliability assessed directed in their intern population were reported.Results: The authors identified 92 studies that were included in the analysis. The majority of studies were conducted in the US (n = 30, 32.6%) and the UK (n = 20, 21.7%), and only 14 studies (15.2%) were conducted in low- and middle-income countries. Major themes examined for internship experience included well-being, educational environment, and work condition and environment. For measuring well-being, standardized tools like the Maslach Burnout Inventory (for measuring burnout), Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (depression), General Health Questionnaire-12 or 30 (psychological distress) and Perceived Stress Scale (stress) were used multiple times. For educational environment and work condition and environment, there is a lack of widely used tools for interns that have undergone psychometric testing in this population other than the Postgraduate Hospital Educational Environment Measure, which has been used in four different countries.Conclusions: There are a large number of tools designed for measuring medical internship experience. International comparability of results from future studies would benefit if tools that have been more widely used are employed in studies on medical interns with further testing of their psychometric properties in different contexts. Background: Career identity is defined as the ability to substantialise career goals and results from the social learning process achieved through interactions with others. This study aimed to understand how the internship experience in Korea affects career identity, which provides a foundation for developing professional values while promoting personal goals and aspirations. Methods: We conducted eleven semi-structured interviews with interns at a university hospital in Korea who had completed internships and chosen a speciality. The interview transcripts underwent inductive thematic analysis using consensual qualitative research approaches. Themes identified were categorised from three domains for the year-long internship experience: personal cognitive, social interaction, and system domains. Results: Researchers derived seven categories and 20 subcategories from the transcripts: (1) self-reflection throughout internship training, (2) practical awareness of the internship programme's operation, (3) perception of individual competence, (4) recognition of mentor importance, (5) situational awareness in the clinical department, (6) relationship experience, and (7) experience of institutional limitations. The internship experience, during which the individual is in charge and core values drive career decisions, is important for the formation of career identity and career orientation. The internship programme provides information about the clinical department to applicants seeking residency and serves a mediating role, providing information about applicants to the clinical departments. Background: Psychiatric disorders have been rising in last few years and emerging as leading cause of disease burden. Psychiatry as a discipline of medicine carry a lot of stigma due to which there is a lack of young medical students or professionals in choosing psychiatry as a career. Aims and Objectives: To study the impact of psychiatry posting on attitude towards psychiatry and estimation of likelihood of Psychiatry as a career choice in female interns. Materials and Methods: A cross sectional observational study of 112 female interns who met the Inclusion criteria. A written informed consent was obtained from the interns. A self-assessable ATP-30 scale was used to assess the attitude of the interns, this questionnaire was filled by the interns on the first day and after the two weeks of their posting in psychiatry department. The data collected was analysed with the help of SPSS version (21.0) info. Results: Ninety-eight interns were considered for further analysis because 14 female interns fulfilled the exclusion criteria. More than 95% interns reported to have positive attitude towards psychiatry throughout the posting. Results showed a statistically significant (<0.01) positive attitude towards major areas in psychiatry except only psychiatric hospitals and treatment. Only 33 female interns chose psychiatry as a career choice after the posting of two weeks which is not statistically significant, while around 40% interns denied for it. Conclusion: Interns showed highly positive attitude towards psychiatry. The positive attitude of interns towards psychiatry would go a long way towards reducing the stigma attached to people with mental illness and mental health professionals. Background: There is some anecdotal evidence that anxiety about the responsibility of an intern influences rural future intentions. Additionally, research has shown that urban interns have reported that they are worried about being 'forced' to work in non-metropolitan hospitals in their first year after graduation. This study sought to explore rural medical students' perceptions and expectations of a rural internship and how local health services and/or their medical school can prepare them best for a rural intern position. Methods: Four focus groups were conducted with 62 final-year medical students upon completion of a 12-month rural clinical school placement. Focus groups were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim for thematic analysis to identify key themes. Results: Most students have high levels of anxiety around starting work but they acknowledge that this may be exaggerated. They believe that in rural areas they get higher quality supervisory support than in urban hospitals as people know you better, whereas in the city you are more anonymous. However, the level of responsibility placed on rural interns was considered to be a double-edged sword. While rural interns were allowed to do more than be a 'paper-pusher' this level of responsibility means they are more accountable. The majority felt that doing your first training years in a metropolitan hospital can be crucial to getting on a training program in your chosen speciality. Conclusions: There appears to be a relatively high level of anxiety about rural internships amongst final-year medical students. Students need more targeted information around specialisation, particularly around regional training hubs, if we want to achieve higher levels of interns choosing a rural career path. Objective:To observe and analyze the application effect of the combined mode of Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) micro-video during the COVID-19 epidemic period in the distance teaching practice of interns in the emergency department. Materials and Methods:The subjects of this study were 60 trainee nurses who conducted emergency nursing practice in Tongji Hospital Affiliated to Tongji Medical College of Huazhong University of Science and Technology from January 1 to February 29, 2020. At the time of the COVID-19 outbreak in Wuhan, they were divided into two groups: (1) the experimental group (combined mode of MOOC micro-video) and (2) the control group (traditional theory teaching combined with clinical practice teaching). The differences of theoretical and practical examination scores and teaching satisfaction between the two groups were compared. Results:There was no significant difference in theoretical, practical, and total examination scores between the two groups, but in terms of teaching satisfaction, the overall satisfaction, the degree of easy understanding, the evaluation of teachers and learning results in the experimental group were higher than those in the control group, with statistical difference (p < 0.05). Conclusion:Compared with the traditional teaching methods, the effect of combined mode of MOOC micro-video in emergency nursing practice is the same as that of traditional teaching methods, but the satisfaction is higher, so it is more suitable to be used in nursing practice during the COVID-19 epidemic period, so as to effectively reduce the cross-infection between doctors, nurses, and teaching staff. Background: Empathy is foundation of the positive physician and patient connection. Physician empathy and the patients' perceived of the physician's empathy can lead to a more positive clinical outcome. Empathy has identified as a main goal of instruct. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study employing a convenience sample of interns and their patients in hospitals in Kashan, Iran, 2018. The Jefferson Scale of Physician Empathy was completed by interns and their patients evaluated by completing the Jefferson Scale of Patient Perceptions of Physician Empathy. Results: The mean score of interns' empathy and the perception of patients' empathy was 72.65 ± 7.99, and 18 ± 3.07, that the mean score of interns' empathy is very low. The gender of interns had no significant effects on their empathy (P = 0.236), and there was no significant relationship between patient's perceived empathy with age (P = 0.3), sex (P = 0.651), and marital status. Statistically significant correlation was found between scores of interns' empathy and patients' perceived empathy (r = 0.49, P = 0.001). According to questionnaire (self-reported), the interns' empathy in surgical ward was significantly higher than the internal medicine wards (P = 0.01). However, according to self-assessment, the interns' empathy in wards was alike (0.08). There was no significant relationship between patients perceived empathy with different wards (0.92). Conclusion: Due to the low empathy score of interns, medical students should be trained on value-based curriculum. Also because the patients' empathy perception in the different wards was alike, the difference of interns' empathy is unimportant. Aim: This study aimed to determine the career preferences of intern physicians, the factors affecting these preferences, and their perspectives on family medicine residency. Method: In this descriptive study, final-year students at a medical school were asked to complete a questionnaire about their socio-demographic information, factors influencing their career choice, and their views on the discipline of family medicine. Results: The study involved 220 students with a mean age of 24.35±1.06 years (range: 23-29), of whom 63.2% (n=139) were female. The three most popular career choices were Dermatology (22.7%), Family Medicine (22.3%), and Psychiatry (17.3%). Among the interns, 87.3% (n=192) thought that family medicine was not sufficiently valued by society and 76.4% (n=168) by other specialists. The factors affecting the preference for family medicine specialty were determined as the ability to adjust working hours (p=0.005), less physical fatigue (p<0.001), less stress (p=0.012), establishing long-term relationships with patients (p=0.005), and providing work-life balance (p=0.038). Of the interns surveyed, 74.6% (n=164) believed that family physicians could provide most of the health services needed by patients but that they did too much simple and repetitive work (63.6%). Conclusions: It is seen that the specialty of family medicine ranked in the top three in career choices among the interns of this medical faculty. It is also important to note that the majority of the interns stated that family physicians were engaged in simple and repetitive tasks and had limited career opportunities when they could provide most of the health services. Résumé: Le dépistage et la prise en charge de la fragilité font partie des actions de prévention du médecin généraliste impliqué dans le parcours de soins des personnes âgées. Objectif : Décrire dans une série d'étudiants du DES de médecine générale les connaissances relatives à la fragilité en particulier dans les domaines de son dépistage et de sa prise en charge. Méthode : Étude prospective descriptive monocentrique. Questionnaire (réponses ouvertes et semi-ouvertes) adressé à l'ensemble des internes de DES de médecine générale de Rouen. Identification des connaissances générales sur le thème des connaissances individuelles du syndrome et des modalités de sa prise en charge. Résultats : 90 questionnaires exploitables émanant des internes de médecine générale toutes promotions confondues. Concernant les connaissances, 10 internes (soit 11 %) déclaraient pouvoir citer au moins un outil de dépistage ou énoncer les critères majeurs constitutifs de fragilité, 34 internes connaissaient au moins 4 critères pertinents (majeurs ou mineurs) et 46 avaient des connaissances très partielles. Le phénotype de Fried était le plus connu. 83 % des internes déclaraient connaître le concept de fragilité. Dans les faits, 88 % des internes se situaient cependant à un niveau de connaissances insuffisant. Concernant la prise en charge de la fragilité, 34 % des internes interrogés déclaraient avoir des compétences permettant de dépister, traiter en 1re intention et réévaluer l'efficacité de leur prise en charge en cas de fragilité. Dans 59 cas (soit 65 %) l'identification d'une fragilité aurait fait hors urgence l'objet d'une consultation d'appui auprès d'un gériatre. Concernant les besoins de formation sur la fragilité : 79 sur 90 (87 %) des internes y étaient favorables. Conclusion : Chez les internes de médecine générale, les compétences permettant de prendre en charge une fragilité semblent acquises séparément, mais les connaissances et la synthèse des symptômes en un syndrome plus large demeurent insuffisantes. L'intégration de ce concept dans une prise en charge globale en milieu de soins communautaires justifie des actions de formation complémentaires. Screening and management of frail elderly patients is essential in general practice. Objective : This study aims to describe and evaluate the knowledge about frailty, its screening tests and management in a population of general practice interns. Method : A prospective, descriptive and mono-centric study using an online survey was conducted. The 2018's promotion of general practice interns in Rouen's University participated. Evaluation of the general knowledge (e.g diagnostic criteria) and specific knowledge (e.g ranking different conditions such as: undernourishment leading to asthenia) and management algorithm (e.g to address the patient for geriatric evaluation) Results : 90 questionnaires were analyzed. Ten interns (11%) stated to know at least one screening test or to know a set of 4 major frailty criteria. Thirty four interns knew at least 4 frailty criteria (major or minor) and 46 interns had partial knowledge. Fried's phenotype was the most known. Seventy-five interns (83%) stated to know the frailty syndrome. However, 88% of the interns had little knowledge about its pathophysiology. Concerning frailty management, 78% (70 interns) stated to know how to screen frailty and prescribe first line treatments. Thirty-one among them knew how to reassess initial treatment if failure. In 59 interns (65%), identifying frailty would have led to a geriatric consultation. Seventy-nine interns (87%) were favorable to go through further training on frailty. Conclusion : These general practice interns were able to identify frailty criterion but, in contrast, global understanding of the syndrome was missing. Background The prevalence of orthostatic hypotension increases with age(1). The aim of this audit was to assess healthcare provider's knowledge of identifying and measuring orthostatic hypotension (OH) in the acute setting. Early identification and management of OH is an important step to prevent adverse outcomes and improve patient's overall functional performance. Methods Fifty-one questionnaires were distributed to a random selection of non-consultant doctors and nurses in our hospital. The questionnaires included questions regarding basic knowledge of OH and its measurement. Questions were based on international guidelines on the appropriate measurement and assessment of OH(1). An education session was then offered to junior doctors and nurses, and subsequently carried out by a senior nurse. Staff were educated on OH and how to correctly assess it. Doctors and nurses were subsequently reassessed using the same questionnaire. Results Initial results showed that many of the respondents were interns (37%) and nurses (35%). 94% of respondents had never received formal training in the evaluation of OH. 51% knew that a patient should lie supine for 5 minutes prior to initial BP assessment. 61% knew to take the BP at 1-minute post standing, and 45% knew that the BP should again be taken at 3 minutes. 71% knew to take the pulse alongside the BP checks. The education sessions and repeat audit are ongoing. Conclusion Many of the hospital staff who assess for OH have not received specific training on how to evaluate and diagnose OH. Background: Fluid and electrolyte management for hospital inpatients has been identified by multiple reports to be suboptimal, with delegation of this task to the most junior members of a medical team, Foundation Year One (FY1) doctors, also known as interns or house officers, being identified as a contributing factor. Methods: An online survey was distributed nationally via social media to FY1 doctors between 21st August 2018 and 19th September 2018. Questions focused around cohort characteristics, team behaviours around fluid and electrolyte prescribing, as well as teaching and knowledge. Results: Two hundred eighty-six doctors participated. 67.13% knew the daily water requirement of a healthy adult. 58.39 and 79.72% knew the daily requirements of potassium and sodium, respectively. 41.26 and 33.57% knew the potassium and sodium composition of Hartmann's solution (1 L), respectively, with only 31.12% of candidates knowing the correct sodium content of 1 L of normal saline 0.9%. FY1 doctors were the principle prescribers of fluid therapy (97.55%); senior house officers, registrars, and consultants were only actively involved in the process 51.75, 20.98, and 5.59% of the time, respectively. 30.77 and 23.43% of FY1s received guidelines and/or teaching on the topic within their firms or as part of their foundation teaching, respectively. At undergraduate level, 52.44% of doctors reported the teaching to be "neither poor or good," "poor," or "very poor." Conclusion: The principle knowledge base underlying fluid and electrolyte management is still poorly understood by FY1 doctors, with poor teaching of the subject at both undergraduate and post-graduate level potentially contributing. Objectives: Current Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) requirements allow PGY-1 otolaryngology-head and neck surgery (ORL-HNS) residents to spend 6 months on service, prompting reconsideration of educational best practices for the first-year resident experience. The aim of this study was to determine feasibility and value of a 1-month PGY-1 otolaryngology clinical skills rotation integrated with anesthesiology to complement clinical ORL-HNS rotations. Methods: Our institution developed a 1-month rotation focusing on procedural simulation and airway management as a collaborative effort between ORL-HNS and anesthesiology. Logistics of curriculum design and implementation in the first 2 years are described. Learner outcome measures include pre- and postintervention Likert scale measures of knowledge and confidence. Statistical assessment of curriculum efficacy includes Wilcoxon sign rank test and effect size (Cohen's d). Results: The described rotation was successfully implemented for 8 entering PGY-1 residents in the 2016-2017 and 2017-1018 academic years. Learners reported significant improvement in knowledge and confidence (5-point Likert scale, all P <.0001) in each of the following grouped domains following the intervention: anesthesia skills (pre 2.79, post 4.02), anesthesia knowledge (pre 2.31, post 3.50), anesthesia overall preparedness (pre 2.75, post 4.04), otolaryngology skills (pre 2.90, post 4.19), otolaryngology scenarios (pre 2.80, post 4.00), and otolaryngology overall preparedness (pre 2.38, post 3.75). Very large effect sizes (Cohen's d, range = 1.6-2.9) were observed. Conclusion: Changing rotation structure in ORL-HNS training programs provides an opportunity to develop novel rotations with high educational impact. Early outcome data suggest that the described clinical skills rotation is practically feasible and was perceived to have measurable value as part of the PGY-1 curriculum.
