Este artigo realiza um levantamento sobre a pesquisa em comunicação que articula a temática jornalismo independente e alternativo, a fim de observar conceitos, tipos de estudo e técnicas de pesquisa mais utilizados. Para alcançarmos os objetivos, mapeou-se as pesquisas apresentadas nos Encontros anuais da Associação Nacional dos Programas de Pós-Graduação em Comunicação (Compós) e na base de dados da Associação Brasileira de Pesquisadores em Jornalismo (SBPJor). O recorte temporal para coleta dos dados compreende os anos de 2016 a 2021. Ademais, utilizou-se da pesquisa bibliográfica como técnica no intuito de conhecer o estado da arte. Com este estudo foi possível mensurar como autores têm dificuldades em conceituar e diferenciar o jornalismo independente e alternativo. Por fim, é possível afirmar que a maioria dos artigos coletados é baseada em estudos empíricos e nem sempre se detém em conceituar o jornalismo independente e alternativo, mas sim utilizam iniciativas assim denominadas como objetos de estudos.

Asian dust comprises a large portion of the northern hemisphere atmospheric dust load, thereby exerting substantial influence on the Earth's climate, global biogeochemistry and hydrological cycle through accelerated snow and ice melt. Dust deposited on alpine glaciers encodes information on broad scale atmospheric-environmental processes. The (234U/238U) values of dust fine particulates can reflect the comminuting time and intermediate processes; thus, it provides a new method for the provenance of aeolian dust in the glacial snowpack/cryoconite. Here we present results from a comprehensive survey of uranium isotopic concentrations in dust collected from cryoconites on the glaciers of the northern Tibetan Plateau (TP). These results indicate significant spatial heterogeneity in the (234U/238U) values associated with snowpack/cryoconite dust over a broad range of glaciers in the northern TP. The values of the (234U/238U) ratio in the glaciers of western Qilian Mountains (Qiyi Glacier, Shiyi Glacier, Laohugou Glacier No.12) were the highest, followed by the Tanggula (Dunkemadi Glacier) and Kunlun Mountains (Yuzhufeng Glacier), whereas these values were the lowest in the eastern Qilian Mountains (Jingyangling Snowpack, Dabanshan Snowpack, Lenglongling Glacier). By including the analysis of Sr-Nd isotopic compositions, we find the spatial isotopic distribution reflects a combination of local dust, which is associated with short comminuting times, and dust transported over long ranges. Meteorological data indicate that the dust production in the west and north TP, Alxa arid lands and Gobi Deserts, may have a significant impact on the TP glaciers. Moreover, U-Sr-Nd isotopic composition and end-member mixing models (EMMA) were used in our study to find out the relative contribution of distinct Asian dust sources to the dust budget in the TP glaciers. The results reveal that snowpack/cryoconite dust is derived from both local sources (low comminution signatures) as well as other dust sources in the Asian region. Our study demonstrates the potential of U isotope composition as a dust tracing method. In particular, by investigating this composition on dust collected from glacier snowpack and cryoconite holes, we arrive at a map of the distribution characteristics of (234U/238U) values in different regions of the TP. Our study is the first to deploy uranium comminution age for Tibetan dust source tracing, and the results are important to elucidate the multiple origins and dynamics of dust in the Tibetan Plateau.

Este artigo busca discutir o infotenimento no contexto do telejornalismo maranhense e tem como a intenção compreender como funciona o processo. A metodologia utilizada foi a entrevista semiestruturada. O corpus se constitui por seis profissionais entrevistados, todos jornalistas. Três da tv Difusora, afiliada do Sistema Brasileiro de Televisão e três da tv Mirante, afiliada da Rede Globo de Televisão, ambas no estado do Maranhão. As entrevistas foram realizadas de forma presencial, no ano de 2022. Concluímos, que os telejornais analisados fazem uso do infotenimento de maneira coerente com as linhas editoriais da emissora e cumprem os requisitos de informar. Percebemos, também, que fatores como a função social do jornalismo, os procedimentos de marketing, as linhas editoriais como as empresas estão inseridas, ou o estilo do programa analisado, e a autonomia da equipe que produziu os telejornais devem ser levados em conta quando tratar da temática. Acreditamos que há reflexões necessárias a se fazer sobre quais caminhos o telejornalismo trilhará nos próximos anos.

[por] O artigo visa analisar os trabalhos vencedores do Prêmio Adelmo Genro Filho na categoria Iniciação Científica e levantar o perfil das/dos ganhadoras/es. Considerando que a premiação reconhece pesquisas que contribuem para o campo do Jornalismo e valoriza a atuação das/os pesquisadoras/es, nos interessa identificar aspectos que representam a iniciação científica e graduação. Utilizamos a Análise de Conteúdo para categorizar os 23 trabalhos que receberam prêmio principal e menção honrosa na categoria em questão, entre 2010 e 2020. Para delimitar o perfil de quem venceu, aplicamos um questionário. Os resultados indicam que a abordagem qualitativa e a análise de conteúdo predominam na metodologia, com destaque para os jornais tradicionais como objeto de estudo. Entre as/os ganhadoras/es, quem participava de grupo de pesquisa e/ou foi bolsista de iniciação científica tende a ingressar mais na pós-graduação. [en] The article aims to analyze the winning works of the Adelmo Genro Filho Award in the Scientific Initiation categor y and raise the profile of the winners. Considering that the award recognizes research that contributes to the Journalism field and values the work of researchers, we are interested in identifying aspects that represent scientific initiation and graduation. We used Content Analysis to categorize the 23 works that received the main award and honorable mention in the categor y in question, between 2010 and 2020. To define the profile of who won, we applied a questionnaire. The results indicate that the qualitative approach and content analysis predominate in the methodology, with emphasis on traditional newspapers as the object of study. Among the winners, those who participated in a research group and/or received a scientific initiation scholarship tend to enter more into graduate studies.

Este trabalho analisou as publicações na seção Fato ou Fake, localizada na página do G1. Para isso, foram criadas 9 categorias de análises: profilaxia e cura do coronavírus, vacina, xenofobia, vídeos verdadeiros no contexto falso, teoria de que o vírus foi previsto no passado, político, pânico, isolamento social e outros. A partir das análises, concluiu-se que 86 notícias foram encontradas em um período de 60 dias. Além disso, percebe-se que embora os recursos tecnológicos e a internet facilitam sobremaneira o acesso a todos os tipos de informação, a checagem desta é cada vez mais necessária. Essa situação reforça ainda mais a importância do jornalista e o papel do Gatekeeper.

[es] Este artículo analiza la hibridación del periodismo televisivo con el ciberperiodismo, estudiando la participación de la audiencia mediante el uso de aplicaciones. Para esto, investiga a los afiliados de Rede Globo de Televisão y realiza entrevistas con periodistas de televisión. El material tiene como método la revisión y mapeo de la literatura y se basa en el concepto de Campo, Bourdieu (1983, 1989). Se concluye que el campo de las noticias de televisión para atraer más al público permitió la hibridación y la “entrada” del público de una manera más expresiva pero enmascarada. El tamiz aún es del periodista. Él es quien califica y es él quien decide quién participará en la televisión deseada. [en] This paper analyzes the hybridization of television journalism with cyberjournalism, studying audience participation through the use of applications. For this, it investigates the affiliates of Rede Globo de Televisão and conducts inter view with television journalists. The material has as method literature review and mapping and is based on the concept of Campo, Bourdieu (1983, 1989). It is concluded that the television news field to at tract the audience more allowed the hybridization and the “entrance” of the audience in a more expressive way but in a masked way. The sieve is still from the journalist. He is the one who qualifies and it is he who decides who will or will not participate in the desired television.

Este trabalho analisa como o Jornal Nacional utiliza o Twitter para promover seu conteúdo televisivo. Verificou-se o perfil no Twitter do programa durante 51 dias de 2019, totalizando 685 tweets. O conteúdo analisado se refere às publicações interativas direcionadas para os internautas nas redes sociais e aos conteúdos transportados da televisão. A pesquisa é baseada na metodologia da Análise de Conteúdo (AC). Os resultados apontam que a presença do Jornal Nacional no Twitter é um efeito da migração de audiência e que a participação do telejornal nas redes sociais fortalece a sua presença em telas diversas.

Este artigo quer entender, a partir da perspectiva do telejornalista, qual o papel do público que envia vídeos para a redação na rotina do veículo. O objeto de análise foi o Jornal Nacional, da Rede Globo de Televisão. Metodologicamente foi mapeada toda a produção do telejornal no ano de 2016 e encontrados 5901 materiais informativos. Destes, 239 continham vídeos amadores. As regiões mais participativas do país, por meio do envio de vídeo amador, foram: Centro-Oeste, Sudeste, Nordeste, Norte e Sul. Esse diagnóstico levou a escolha dos entrevistados. Ao todo foram entrevistados oito telejornalistas. Concluiu-se que embora o profissional entenda a importância da participação do público — ele reconhece a produção amadora como uma fonte diferenciada— esta não chega a ser vista como parte da produção, ou seja, o amador não chega a ser entendido como um colaborador da rotina propriamente dito. Nas falas dos entrevistados é possível ver que o telejornalista utiliza da ideologia profissional para reafirmar a importância da profissão no contexto de jornalismo participativo.

O presente material analisa os comentários das matérias que participam do “Ciclo do Jornalismo Integrado”, presentes no espaço denominado as “Mais Lidas” do site de notícias G1,em períodos dos anos de 2011, 2012 e 2013. Laboratório de Telejornalismo é uma disciplina que exige do acadêmico o exercício da reportagem telejornalista, da pauta à edição de texto. Ensinar essa dinâmica, longe do dia a dia de uma televisão comercial, é um desafio. Este material mostra a experiência em sala de aula da referida disciplina ministrada na Universidade Federal do Maranhão – UFMA e relata a importância do acadêmico em ter o pré-conhecimento relacionado à edição de imagens. Sugere-se, após a realização de análise empírica, que entender a linguagem videográfica anteriormente à pauta para televisão agrega valor ao futuro jornalista, facilita o entendimento deste e também o encaminhamento do material. Abstract Laboratory of TV Journalism is a discipline that requires the exercise of academic television journalist reporting, the agenda for text editing. Teach this Dinamica, away from the day to day commercial television, is a challenge. This material shows the experience in the classroom of the discipline taught at the Federal University of Maranhão - UFMA and the importance of academic reports on having pre-knowledge related to image editing. It is suggested, after conducting empirical analysis, to understand the video language prior to the agenda for adding value to the future television journalist, facilitates the understanding of this and also the referral of material. Objetivo: Este estudo se propõe a entender as predileções e comportamentos do leitor do jornal Correio Popular, de Imperatriz (MA), a partir da análise descritiva dos modos de navegação e interações ordenadas pelos internautas que integram os curtidores da fanpage do veículo no Facebook. Método: A pesquisa está estruturada em três pilares metodológicos: estudo descritivo, categorização a partir de estudo qualitativo, e entrevista. O estudo descritivo foi viabilizado por meio da análise dos dados do painel administrativo de acesso restrito aos administradores e gerenciadores da página, que foi liberado para essa pesquisa. O levantamento ocorreu entre os dias 12 de junho a 23 de junho de 2013. A etapa qualitativa prevê análise e categorização dos comentários inseridos na matéria mais comentada no período, a postagem somou 82 posts de leitores. Por último alguns dados são fruto de duas entrevistas, feitas com duas jornalistas que trabalham no jornal e monitoram a página. Resultados: O resultado aponta algumas orientações para uso de fanpages para futuros jornais em formato semelhante. Conclusões: O estudo possibilitou o entendimento de qual o papel das fanpages para os veículos, pelo menos em cidaes pequenas.

A proposta deste artigo é destacar a importância da extensão universitária como ferramenta complementar da educação universitária. O recorte tem como foco a descrição da experiência com o projeto "Histórias para Contar", uma proposta implantada pelo Curso de Comunicação Social da Faculdade Estácio de Sá de Campo Grande (MS) na qual alunos e professores partilhavam momentos de leitura e descontração com idosos do asilo São João Bosco, o mais antigo da cidade. As atividades foram proposta como uma tentativa de ampliar a formação humanística do discente.

In this interview, the author emphasizes that there is a conduction of politics through YouTube but not within it. The researcher warns about comments posted in videos that don’t respect dissent and differences, thereby sometimes creating a hostile place on the web.

Abstract Background Hereditary Angioedema (HAE) due to C1-inhibitor deficiency (C1INH) is a rare condition, clinically characterised by recurrent swelling. The unpredictability of attacks affects the patients’ quality of life (QoL). HAE patients and their families have vast unmet physical, psychological, and social needs. A human-centred design (HCD) approach to describing the needs of different user types is to utilise personas, a data-driven narrative tool for communicating user archetypes that capture the individuals’ attitudes, goals, and behaviours. The aim of this study was to create and analyse personas based on HAE patients’ and their caregivers’ interviews. Semi-structured interviews were conducted through anthropological conversations with patients, patient-caregivers (double role of patient and caregiver), and non-affected caregivers. Qualitative and quantitative insights from analyses formed the basis to create personas. Results We enrolled 17 subjects: 15 patients (6 of them were patient-caregivers) and 2 non-affected caregivers. The mean age of participants was 50.3 ± 14.4 years. Eight patients were on treatment with prophylactic therapy. The mean percentage score of Angioedema Quality of Life (AE-QoL) for HAE patients was 19.8 ± 12.0. Six personas were identified describing the participants’ personal history, disease management, and needs: four personas referred to patients, one to patient-caregivers, and one non-affected caregiver personas were identified. Across patient personas, the most expressed needs were psychological support and better awareness amongst healthcare professionals. Caregivers, on their side, desired better information about the disease, including the latest therapies, and higher awareness within the community. Conclusion A Human Centred Innovative Approach Based on Persona extends beyond the physical symptoms to encompass the psychological and social aspects of the individual's well-being also including the family in the evaluation.

Abstract Raman spectroscopy enables the non-destructive characterization of chemical composition, crystallinity, defects, or strain in countless materials. However, the Raman response of surfaces or thin films is often weak and obscured by dominant bulk signals. Here we overcome this limitation by placing a transferable porous gold membrane, (PAuM) on the surface of interest. Slot-shaped nanopores in the membrane act as plasmonic antennas and enhance the Raman response of the surface or thin film underneath. Simultaneously, the PAuM suppresses the penetration of the excitation laser into the bulk, efficiently blocking its Raman signal. Using graphene as a model surface, we show that this method increases the surface-to-bulk Raman signal ratio by three orders of magnitude. We find that 90% of the Raman enhancement occurs within the top 2.5 nm of the material, demonstrating truly surface-sensitive Raman scattering. To validate our approach, we quantify the strain in a 12.5 nm thin Silicon film and analyze the surface of a LaNiO3 thin film. We observe a Raman mode splitting for the LaNiO3 surface-layer, which is spectroscopic evidence that the surface structure differs from the bulk. These results validate that PAuM gives direct access to Raman signatures of thin films and surfaces.

Resumo: Este trabalho analisa como o portal de notícias G1.com fez uso das redes sociais virtuais Facebook e Twitter, na cobertura jornalística do incêdio da Boate Kiss, ocorrido em janeiro de 2013, em Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul. Recorremos a técnicas da Análise de Conteúdo para a análise de um corpus constituído por 788 peças jornalísticas, publicadas entre 27 de janeiro (madrugada do acontecimento) e 26 de fevereiro de 2013, totalizando o intervalo temporal de um mês. A discussão dos dados é feita a partir de sete variáveis, que, no seu conjunto, nos permitem averiguar as principais características da cobertura. Entre os resultados, observou-se um conjunto de práticas jornalísticas que, em nosso entender, são oriundas da relação entre o jornalismo e as redes sociais no ambiente virtual.

Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) and Total Suspended Matter (TSM) are key health indicators of the coastal ocean and seas. The former is linked to primary productivity, while the latter is associated with water quality; both are influenced by change in climate. Recent studies have highlighted a declining trend in Chl-a levels along the Mediterranean coastal region. River discharge plays an important role in regulating the coastal Chl-a concentration levels. The present research primarily focuses on understanding the significance of Tiber River −driven spatial dynamics of Chl-a and TSM along the central Tyrrhenian Sea coasts. The research also focuses on evaluating the applicability of Sentinel-2 and identifying a suitable method for estimating Chl-a and TSM from Sentinel-2. Neural networks and dark spectrum fitting techniques were applied using multiple algorithms to estimate the dynamic distribution of Chl-a and TSM driven by the Tiber River in the study area. Multiple statistical analyses were performed, and statistically significant relationships were observed. The Case-2 Regional Coast Colour Neural Network (C2RCC-Net) outperformed all other algorithms, with an R2 value of 0.903 for Chl-a and an R2 value of 0.966 for TSM. Furthermore, the present research also identified a positive pixel to pixel spatial correlation between Chl-a and TSM in all four seasons, highlighting the positive impact of Tiber River on maintaining Chl-a levels along the coasts of Tyrrhenian Sea. This stands in contrast with the negative trend seen in the Mediterranean scale.

IntroductionIn patients with Hereditary Angioedema (HAE) related to primary C1 inhibitor deficiency (C1INH), the defective clearance of immune complexes and apoptotic materials along with impairment of normal humoral response potentially leads to autoimmunity. Few studies report evidence on autoimmune diseases in C1INH-HAE, but no large population studies focus on rare connective tissue diseases (RCTDs). We aim at evaluating for the first time prevalence and distribution of RCTDs - Systemic Lupus Erytematosus (SLE), primary Sjogren Syndrome (SjS), primary antiphospholipid syndrome (APS), Systemic Sclerosis (SSc), and mixed connective tissue diseases (MCTD) in a large Italian cohort of C1INH-HAE patients.MethodsA multicenter observational study includes C1INH-HAE patients from ITACA Centers throughout Italy (time frame Sept 2023-March 2024). Inclusion criteria are i. a defined diagnosis of type I or type II C1INH-HAE; ii. age ≥15 years (puberty already occurred); iii. enrollment in the ITACA Registry. The diagnosis of SLE, primary SjS, primary APS, SSc, and MCTD are made in accordance with international classification criteria.ResultsData are collected from a total of 855 C1INH-HAE patients referring to 15 ITACA Centers. Patients with concomitant RCTDs were 18/855 (2.1%) with F:M ratio 3.5 and a prevalent type I C1INH-HAE diagnosis (87.2%). A diagnosis of SLE results in 44.5% of cases (n=8) while the remaining diagnoses are primary SjS (22.2%, n=4), primary APS (16.6%, n=3), SSc (11.2%, n=2), and a single case of MCTD (5.5%). Abstract Spike (S) glycoprotein is the largest structural protein of SARS‐CoV‐2 virus and the main one involved in anchoring of the host receptor ACE2 through the receptor binding domain (RBD). S protein secondary structure is of great interest for shedding light on various aspects, from functionality to pathogenesis, finally to spectral fingerprint for the design of optical biosensors. In this paper, the secondary structure of SARS‐CoV‐2 S protein and its constituting components, namely RBD, S1 and S2 regions, are investigated at serological pH by measuring their amide I infrared absorption bands through Attenuated Total Reflection Infrared (ATR‐IR) spectroscopy. Experimental data in combination with MultiFOLD predictions, Define Secondary Structure of Proteins (DSSP) web server and Gravy value calculations, provide a comprehensive understanding of RBD, S1, S2, and S proteins in terms of their secondary structure content, conformational order, and interaction with the solvent.

Introduction Axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) is a chronic inflammatory disease characterised by inflammatory low back pain. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are recommended as a first treatment in axSpA. In case of inadequate response to NSAIDs, biological disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (bDMARDs) should be introduced according to the recommendations of the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) and the American College of Rheumatology. Until 2015, only bDMARD was recommended for axSpA in case of failure to anti-tumour necrosis factor (TNF). The 2022 Assessment of SpondyloArthritis International Society (ASAS)-EULAR recommendation proposed to start an alternative bDMARD but without advocating a switch in mode of action as proposed in rheumatoid arthritis. Since 2015, the inhibition of interleukin (IL)-17 has demonstrated efficacy in axSpA. Then, we designed a randomised multicentre clinical trial to identify the more effective treatment after a first anti-TNF failure in axSpA, comparing an anti-IL-17 to a second anti-TNF.Methods and analysis The ROC-SpA (Rotation Or Change of biotherapy after first anti-TNF treatment failure in axSpA patients) study is a prospective, randomised, multicentre, superiority open-label phase IV trial comparing an anti-IL-17 strategy (secukinumab or ixekizumab) to a second TNF blocker in a 1:1 ratio. Patients with an active axSpA (Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index >4 or ankylosing spondylitis disease activity score (ASDAS) >3.5) with inadequate 3 months response to a first anti-TNF and with a stable dose of conventional synthetic DMARDs, oral corticosteroids and/or NSAIDs for at least 1 month are included in 31 hospital centres in France and Monaco. The primary outcome is the ASAS40 response at week 24. The secondary outcomes are ASAS40 at weeks 12 and 52, other clinical scores (ASAS20, partial remission rate, ASDAS major improvement rate) at weeks 12, 24 and 52 with the drugs and anti-drugs concentrations at baseline, weeks 12, 24 and 52. The primary analysis is performed at the end of the study according to the intent-to-treat principle.Ethics and dissemination Ethics approval was obtained from the committee for the protection of persons (Comité de protection des personnes Ouest IV #12/18_1, 6 February 2018) and registered in ClinicalTrials.gov and in EudraCT. Results of this study, whether positive or negative, will be presented at national and international congresses, to national axSpA patient associations and published in a peer-reviewed journal. Le questioni metodologiche relative all’uso delle fonti visive nella storia sociale dell’educazione invitano a una rivalutazione dell’affermazione di Ariès riguardo al sentimento dell’infanzia nel tardo Medioevo e nella prima età moderna. L’analisi delle illustrazioni tedesche e francesi della fine del XV secolo rivela che i neonati erano accuditi con affetto, prestando attenzione sia ai loro bisogni sanitari che morali. Questo studio si interroga sull’estensione di tale sentimento: si limitava al contesto familiare o coinvolgeva l’intera società? Dopo aver riformulato la tesi di Ariès attraverso le fonti visive tratte da illustrazioni francesi e tedesche della prima età moderna, l’articolo risponde a questa domanda esaminando le pratiche di cura organizzata per gli infanti abbandonati nella Toscana del XV secolo, una regione caratterizzata da pionierismo nell’istituzionalizzazione dei bambini lasciati dalle loro famiglie. La dimensione collettiva di questa cura è esplorata attraverso i cambiamenti linguistici, la transizione dall’allattamento esternalizzato a quello residenziale e la continua lotta contro le scarse condizioni igienico-sanitarie. Infine, l’analisi visiva degli affreschi dell’ospedale di Santa Maria della Scala a Siena rivela importanti intuizioni: (i) la cura dei bambini abbandonati integrava preoccupazioni morali, spirituali e logistiche; (ii) erano presenti pratiche educative avanzate, inclusa l’alfabetizzazione; e (iii) divisioni di lavoro di genere e personale specializzato svolgevano un ruolo cruciale. Questi risultati suggeriscono che la cura istituzionalizzata dei bambini operava come un dispositivo foucaultiano, plasmato dall’urbanizzazione e dalla necessità di tenere registri, sfidando l’affermazione di alcuni interpreti di Ariès secondo cui la società medievale fosse indifferente all’infanzia.

Editorial for Formazione & insegnamento, 22(2). The editorial “Shaping Education: Innovation, Identity, and Inclusion” reflects on how education, inspired by the principles of Paulo Freire, can become a tool for social transformation. The issue explores three fundamental dimensions of contemporary education: innovation, identity, and inclusion. Innovation is seen not only as technological progress but also as a rethinking of educational practices. Identity emerges as the recognition and valorisation of cultural diversity within educational contexts. Inclusion is proposed as a guiding principle aimed at ensuring equal and universal access to learning. This issue of the journal offers insights and reflections on how these dimensions intertwine, building a more just, equitable, and inclusive educational system.

For several years, scientific literature in the field of education and training has highlighted the opportunity to include disciplinary elements within school projects. That is, in addition to knowledge transfer and the training of technical skills. That entails a holistic approach to the individual and to their human and relational development. Hence, the need arises to provide new educational stimuli and instruments, especially for fragile youths, which experience high dropout rates. This paper illustrates the “points-based licence” mechanism, which is an assessment tool devised by CIOFS FP FVG of Trieste—a VET provider. The “licence” system arises from the need to convey students a sense of responsibility for their own actions by monitoring whether they abide by the rules or not, yet without acting exclusively as an impersonal punishment tool. That is, it is effective inasmuch as it works in parallel with well-designed student careers and the push towards self-realization.

Abstract Enterochromaffin (EC) cells located within the intestinal mucosal epithelium release serotonin (5-HT) to regulate motility tones, barrier function and the immune system. Electroanalytical methodologies have been able to monitor steady state basal extracellular 5-HT levels but are unable to provide insight into how these levels are influenced by key regulatory processes such as release and uptake. We established a new measurement approach, amperometry approach curve profiling, which monitors the extracellular 5-HT level at different electrode–tissue (E–T) distances. Analysis of the current profile can provide information on contributions of regulatory components on the observed extracellular 5-HT level. Measurements were conducted from ex vivo murine ileum and colon using a boron-doped diamond (BDD) microelectrode. Amperometry approach curve profiling coupled with classical pharmacology demonstrated that extracellular 5-HT levels were significantly lower in the colon when compared to the ileum. This difference was due to a greater degree of activity of the 5-HT transporter (SERT) and a reduced amount of 5-HT released from colonic EC cells. The presence of an inhibitory 5-HT4 autoreceptor was observed in the colon, where a 40% increase in extracellular 5-HT was the half maximal inhibitory concentration for activation of the autoreceptor. This novel electroanalytical approach allows estimates of release and re-uptake and their contribution to 5-HT extracellular concentration from intestinal tissue be obtained from a single series of measurements.

Objective: Cochlear receptors are sensitive to vibratory stimuli. Based on this sensibility, bone-anchored hearing aids have been introduced to correct unilateral or bilateral conductive or mixed hearing loss and unilateral deafness. The vestibular system is also sensitive to the vibratory stimulus and this type of response is used in clinics to test its functionality. Being aware of this double separated sensibility, we wondered whether bone vibration, which activates the acoustic receptors of patients with bone conduction aids, can also influence the functionality of the vestibular system. Methods: To this end, we recruited 12 patients with a bone-anchored hearing aid and evaluated their vestibular function with and without an activated vibratory acoustic device. Results: Our results show that the vibratory stimulus delivered by the bone conduction aid also reaches and stimulates the vestibular receptors; this stimulation is evidenced by the appearance or modification of some nystagmus findings during bedside vestibular testing. Despite this, none of these patients complained of dizziness or vertigo during prosthesis use. Nystagmus that appeared or changed during acoustic vibratory stimulation through the prosthesis was almost all predominantly horizontal, unidirectional with respect to gaze or body position, inhibited by fixation, and most often consistent with vestibular function tests indicating peripheral vestibular damage. Conclusions: The findings of sound-evoked nystagmus seem to indicate peripheral rather than central vestibular activation. The occurrence of some predominantly horizontal and high-frequency induced nystagmus seems to attribute the response mainly to the utricle and lateral semicircular canal.

Although the implementation of area-wide inoculum reduction and Asian citrus psyllid control are decisive in controlling Huanglongbing (HLB) epidemics, growers continue looking for enhanced nutritional and/or resistance inducer (ENRI) treatments to mitigate yield damage in HLB-affected trees. Therefore, an experiment was set up in an 8-year-old sweet orange orchard to evaluate the effects of the foliar application of nutrients, phosphite, and salicylate sprayed four to five times per year during flushing periods. The trial had eight treatments in four randomized blocks. HLB incidence and yield were assessed from December 2010 to January 2017. HLB-symptomatic trees with less than 5% HLB severity were selected from each plot in the first (Group 1), second (Group 2), and third years (Group 3) after the beginning of treatments to assess the frequency of trees with different HLB symptoms and micronutrient deficiencies, HLB severity, and fruit yield until January 2017. Twenty asymptomatic trees from each plot were also harvested for comparison each year. ENRI treatments did not reduce the progress of HLB incidence in the plots or the HLB severity progress or frequency of HLB symptoms in the selected trees. ENRI treatments did not improve the yield of symptomatic trees compared with asymptomatic trees. Hence, in a scenario without HLB-symptomatic tree removal in mature orchards, disease severity progress and yield reduction in HLB-affected trees remained regardless of ENRI treatment. Abstract Among marine ecosystems globally, those in the Mediterranean Sea, are facing many threats. New technologies are crucial for enhancing our understanding of marine habitats and ecosystems, which can be complex and resource-intensive to analyse using traditional techniques. We tested, for the first time, an integrated multi-platform approach for mapping the coastal benthic habitat in the Civitavecchia (northern Latium, Italy) coastal area. This approach includes the use of an Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV), a Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV), and in situ measurements of ecosystem functionality. The echosounder data allowed us to reconstruct the distribution of bottom types, as well as the canopy height and coverage of the seagrass Posidonia oceanica. Our study further involved assessing the respiration (Rd) and net primary production (NCP) rates of P. oceanica and its associated community through in situ benthic chamber incubation. By combining these findings with the results of USV surveys, we were able to develop a preliminary spatial distribution model for P. oceanica primary production (PP-SDM). The P. oceanica PP-SDM was applied between the depths of 8 and 10 m in the studied area and the obtained results showed similarities with other sites in the Mediterranean Sea. Though in the early stages, our results highlight the significance of multi-platform observation data for a thorough exploration of marine ecosystems, emphasizing their utility in forecasting biogeochemical processes in the marine environment.

Abstract JEM-EUSO is an international program for the development of space-based Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Ray observatories. The program consists of a series of missions which are either under development or in the data analysis phase. All instruments are based on a wide-field-of-view telescope, which operates in the near-UV range, designed to detect the fluorescence light emitted by extensive air showers in the atmosphere. We describe the simulation software ESAF in the framework of the JEM-EUSO program and explain the physical assumptions used. We present here the implementation of the JEM-EUSO, POEMMA, K-EUSO, TUS, Mini-EUSO, EUSO-SPB1 and EUSO-TA configurations in ESAF. For the first time ESAF simulation outputs are compared with experimental data.

Abstract: Nitrogen (N) fertilization in citrus orchards is prone to significant environmental losses. Managing nutrients for sustainable development and optimizing nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) are key tasks in modern agriculture. NUE depends on N uptake and assimilation. In addition to intrinsic fertilizer use efficiency, we evaluated plant growth, nitrate reductase (NRase) activity, and the nutritional status of citrus plants fertilized with different N sources [calcium nitrate (CN), ammonium nitrate (AN), and ammonium sulfate (AS)]. After 240 days, plants supplied with either CN or AN exhibited higher biomass production and N accumulation in the leaves than those fertilized with AS. The supply of ammonium-containing sources (AN and AS) reduced the substrate pH, in which those with AS exhibited lower N partitioning to the leaves, as well as reduced the absorption and accumulation of magnesium and phosphorus. NRase activity was higher in plants supplied with CN or AN compared to AS, and CN fertilization provided the greatest NUE. The data demonstrated that citrus plants fertilized with sources containing nitrate increased the NUE from 10 to 25% and consequently had greater growth compared to those fed with AS.

ABSTRACT Objective: To perform the cross-cultural adaptation of CALCULATE for Brazilian Portuguese. Method: A methodological study conducted from January to December 2021, divided into six stages: translation, synthesis, back-translation, expert committee with the application of the content validity index, pre-testing in 40 adult patients, and submission to the authors. The study took place in the intensive care units of a public tertiary teaching hospital in the interior of the state of São Paulo, Brazil. The original CALCULATE has eight risk assessment items and is stratified with a score of 0-3 (high risk) and 4-8 (very high risk). Results: After expert evaluation, the final content validity was 0.9. They suggested words and phrases that should undergo changes regarding textual equivalences, as well as definitions of acronyms and terminologies. In the pre-test, the items were assessed as suitable for understanding; only one item required additional explanation for adequacy. Conclusion: The cross-cultural adaptation of CALCULATE for Brazilian Portuguese was successfully performed, revealing a good content validity index, confirming the relevance and appropriateness of its items. CALCULATE is suitable for use in intensive care units and research and teaching centers.

Abstract Accurate assessment of population trends and factors that limit distributions of threatened species is key to conserving biodiversity. A reduction in impacts of human land use on species habitats may be one of the factors involved in the recolonization of former ranges by native species. The signature of this process could be detected as a temporal reduction of land use effects on species distributions, or as a spatial reduction, with effects persisting only in habitats more sensitive to anthropogenic stressors. We explored these hypotheses in a recolonizing semiaquatic carnivore. Our species of interest was the Eurasian river otter (Lutra lutra) in Italy, a nationally vulnerable species with a restricted but expanding range. Human land use is likely to strongly affect riparian and stream communities through habitat degradation. We used three independent survey datasets collected in 2003, 2009, and 2019 at the southern range periphery, and unpaired‐site occupancy models to account for imperfect detection in otter surveys. To assess how land use affects recolonization by otters, we tested three main model predictions: (1) occupancy increased over years, (2) effects of agricultural and urban land cover on occupancy decreased over years, (3) effects of agricultural and urban land cover were constant across years and changed with stream size and elevation. We found evidence that otter occupancy increased over years, with predicted mean occupancy of 0.27 in 2003 and 0.65 in 2019. An interaction effect of urban land cover with stream size was the strongest predictor of otter occupancy. Interestingly, a higher percentage of urban land cover around streams was predicted to reduce the probability of occupancy at smaller streams, but did not influence occupancy at larger streams. Despite a large increase in occupancy, otters at the southern periphery of the Italian range are still unable to colonize small rivers in urbanized areas. This pattern supports our hypothesis that human land use can affect recolonizing species at sensitive habitats, considering the intrinsic vulnerability of small stream ecosystems to anthropogenic stressors. Restoring small streams impacted by urban areas can be a valuable conservation action to increase habitat connectivity and favor recolonization of otters.

The increasing number of primary students with varying degrees of exposure to a family minority language requires a reflection on whether specific aspects of their daily language experience influence their learning. Indeed, Minority Language Children (MLC) often report difficulties in reading that must be better investigated to exclude neurodevelopmental conditions such as developmental dyslexia.To this aim, we developed a new instrument, the Daily Linguistic Practice Interview. It allows for collecting information about the linguistic practice and use in the family (Scale A) and extra-family context (Scale B), and about the child's linguistic preferences and habits (Scale C). The Interview further provides analogic quantitative measures of minority language active speaking with mother, father, and passive listening, in the form of clocks to paint.The relationship between these linguistic aspects and reading skills was investigated on 79 MLC aged 8 to 11 y.o.through a correlational approach and regression models. Our results show that family and extra-family language use influence accurate lexical recognition, moreover a “mother effect” broadly affects reading skills in the majority language.Our findings suggest that MLC deserve a more careful evaluation of learning disorders with ad hoc standardized tests, that incorporates information about the family language exposure.

Abstract Background The COVID-19 pandemic has ravaged many countries worldwide since December 2019. The high infection rates, and the need for health care assistance for individuals with comorbidities, strained the national health care systems around the world. Outbreak peaks increased the burden on hospitals that where perceived as high-risk places by people, who often decided to cancel or defer hospital visits. Thus, Italian Local Health Authorities had to develop new organizational models to meet the increased health care needs of the population. The aim of this study is to assess the impact of strengthened community health services on the hospital burden. Methods We analysed the number of Emergency Department access at the Hospital De Lellis covered by the Local Health Authority in Rieti, from March 2020 to November 2021. We then assessed the effects of community health services: the Special District Continuing Care Units (SDCUs) and the the COVID hub, on the COVID-19-related ED access, admission and mortality rates. A Chi-squared test for trend and three multivariable logistic regression models were used to investigate the trends and the possible predictors of COVID ED access, COVID hospital admissions, and deaths. Background: We propose a Suppression Head IMPulse (SHIMP) test method that provides for equipment only through the use of InfraRed Video-OculoScopy (IR-VOS) and allows horizontal and vertical semicircular canal function evaluation in bedside mode. We therefore named the test InfraRed clinical SHIMP (IR-cSHIMP). Methods: To check IR-cSHIMP diagnostic efficiency, we studied 22 normal subjects, 18 patients with unilateral, and 6 with bilateral deficient vestibulopathy. Each subject first underwent a vestibular examination and, only later, an IRc-SHIMP test. Results: When the IR-cSHIMP test was performed in the horizontal plane, all normal subjects showed anti-compensatory saccades. When the vertical semicircular canal function was evaluated, the same result was obtained in all normal subjects except three, which were considered false positives. In patients with vestibular deficits, the test performed in the horizontal and vertical planes were always pathological, with 100% agreement between clinical and instrumental tests. Conclusions: Our bedside method proved to be fast, simple, and effective in discriminating between healthy and pathological subjects. It required only the same skill as the better-known cHIT. For these reasons, we believe that the IR-cSHIMP should be part of daily clinical practice as a useful tool in the selection of patients to undergo more sophisticated investigations.

Abstract The basal ganglia (BG) is part of a basic feedback circuit regulating cortical function, such as voluntary movements control, via their influence on thalamocortical projections. BG disorders, namely Parkinson’s disease (PD), characterized by the loss of neurons in the substantia nigra, involve the progressive loss of motor functions. At the present, PD is incurable. Converging evidences suggest the onset of PD-specific pathology prior to the appearance of classical motor signs. This latent phase of neurodegeneration in PD is of particular relevance in developing more effective therapies by intervening at the earliest stages of the disease. Therefore, a key challenge in PD research is to identify and validate markers for the preclinical and prodromal stages of the illness. We propose a mechanistic neurocomputational model of the BG at a mesoscopic scale to investigate the behavior of the simulated neural system after several degrees of lesion of the substantia nigra, with the aim of possibly evaluating which is the smallest lesion compromising motor learning. In other words, we developed a working framework for the analysis of theoretical early-stage PD. While simulations in healthy conditions confirm the key role of dopamine in learning, in pathological conditions the network predicts that there may exist abnormalities of the motor learning process, for physiological alterations in the BG, that do not yet involve the presence of symptoms typical of the clinical diagnosis.

In this article, we present cutting-edge machine learning-based techniques for the detection and reconstruction of meteors and space debris in the Mini-EUSO experiment, a detector installed on board of the International Space Station, and pointing toward the Earth. We base our approach on a recent technique, the STACKing method plus Convolutional Neural Network (STACK-CNN), originally developed as an online trigger in an orbiting remediation system to detect space debris. Our proposed method, the refined-STACKing method plus convolutional neural network (R-Stack-CNN), makes the STACKing method plus convolutional neural network (STACK-CNN) more robust, thanks to a random forest that learns the temporal development of these events in the camera. We prove the flexibility of our method by showing that it is sensitive to any space object that moves linearly in the field of view. First, we search small space debris, never observed by Mini-EUSO. Due to the limiting statistics, also in this case, no debris were found. However, since meteors produce signals similar to space debris but they are much more frequent, the R-Stack-CNN is adapted to identify such events while avoiding the numerous false positives of the Stack-CNN. Results from real data show that the R-Stack-CNN is able to find more meteors than a classical thresholding method and a new method of two neural networks. We also show that the method is also able to accurately reconstruct speed and direction of meteors with simulated data.

SQM-ISS is a detector that will search from the International Space Station for massive particles possibly present among the cosmic rays. Among them, we mention strange quark matter, Q-Balls, lumps of fermionic exotic compact stars, Primordial Black Holes, mirror matter, Fermi balls, etc. These compact, dense objects would be much heavier than normal nuclei, have velocities of galaxy-bound systems, and would be deeply penetrating. The detector is based on a stack of scintillator and piezoelectric elements which can provide information on both the charge state and mass, with the additional timing information allowing to determine the speed of the particle, searching for particles with velocities of the order of galactic rotation speed (v ≲ 250 km/s). In this work, we describe the apparatus and its observational capabilities.

Abstract Background Improvement of psychosocial-spiritual well-being in patients with life-threatening or life-limiting illness is desirable. Resilience and mindfulness are considered to be helpful for enhancing psychosocial-spiritual well-being. Mindfulness-based interventions have been shown to promote resilience to stress and enhance well-being. However, in medical patients, evidence for the associations between mindfulness and resilience is lacking. We hypothesize patients with higher levels of psychosocial-spiritual well-being demonstrate greater resilience and mindfulness. Methods 200 patients (mean age = 50.2, SD = 15.5) with serious and or life-limiting illnesses were recruited from the NIH Clinical Center. Patients completed a demographic questionnaire, the NIH-HEALS measure of psychosocial-spiritual well-being, the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC-10), and the Mindful Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS). The demographic questionnaire also included a question on current stress level. Results The NIH-HEALS was positively correlated to CD-RISC-10 (rs=0.44, p

Downbeat nystagmus (DBN) is a neuro-otological finding frequently encountered by clinicians dealing with patients with vertigo. Since DBN is a finding that should be understood because of central vestibular dysfunction, it is necessary to know how to frame it promptly to suggest the correct diagnostic-therapeutic pathway to the patient. As knowledge of its pathophysiology has progressed, the importance of this clinical sign has been increasingly understood. At the same time, clinical diagnostic knowledge has increased, and it has been recognized that this sign may occur sporadically or in association with others within defined clinical syndromes. Thus, in many cases, different therapeutic solutions have become possible. In our work, we have attempted to systematize current knowledge about the origin of this finding, the clinical presentation and current treatment options, to provide an overview that can be used at different levels, from the general practitioner to the specialist neurologist or neurotologist.

Cervical Cancer (CC) is one of the most prevalent neoplasms among women, considered the leading cause of gynecological death worldwide, and the fourth most common type of cancer. Regional metastasis is closely related to the low effectiveness of treatment, and validating biomarkers can optimize accuracy in diagnosis and prognosis. Among the potential biomarkers associated with disease metastasis are circular RNAs (circRNAs), whose altered expression has been linked to CC progression. In this context, this systematic review aims to compile information on the clinical-pathological significance and describe the biological function of circRNAs. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were used to include relevant literature, followed by in silico analysis. Additionally, we employed the UALCAN tools to search for host genes of circRNAs and expression data, miRTargetLink 2.0 to predict interactions of microRNA target genes and the Cytoscape software to predict possible interactions of microRNA target genes. According to the research, most circRNAs were found to be overexpressed and described as regulators of processes such as invasion, cell proliferation, apoptosis and migration. They were also implicated in clinical significance, including metastasis, TNM staging and microRNA interactions. CircRNAs may participate in critical processes in tumorigenesis; therefore, understanding the underlying molecular mechanisms of gene regulation in CC can contribute to the accuracy of diagnosis, prognosis and therapy.

Il Kalevala, poema epico finlandese per eccellenza, ospita un repertorio singolare di episodi riferiti a una concezione ‘mitologica’ dell’infanzia. Ciò lo rende un proficuo ambito di applicazione per uno studio dell’educazione informale in connessione al patrimonio culturale. Dopo aver stabilito come quest’ultimo costituisca la chiave di volta per lo studio dei processi informali di apprendimento, il presente contributo adotta la prospettiva dell’Umanesimo Metropolita per l’Educazione [Greater Humanities for Education] allo scopo di condurre un’analisi tematica delle istanze del Kalevala riguardanti l’infanzia che tenga conto delle dimensioni empirica, storica, ermeneutica ed etico-morale del fenomeno letterario in questione. Lo studio di caso che ne deriva mostra un concetto poliedrico di infanzia, che alterna concezioni deficitarie a forme di eccezionalismo. Dalle articolazioni di tale concetto emerge una teoria folk della formazione che in questo contributo è ribattezzata fatalismo formativo. A conclusione dell’elaborato, si ricavano induttivamente i tre pilastri del fatalismo formativo del Kalevala: (i) il determinismo intergenerazionale (storia); (ii) il quasi-determinismo della tradizione; (iii) l’idiosincrasia formativa dei percorsi esistenziali individuali. Vista l’ampia patrimonializzazione del Kalevala e il suo ruolo nella formazione dell’identità collettiva finlandese, si conclude riflettendo su come tale fatalismo possa coniugarsi con gli aspetti più progressisti della società finlandese contemporanea.

Introduction:Bagassa guianensis Aubl, a tree widely distributed in Brazil, significantly contributes to the furniture industry. Notably, it harbors the bioactive compound 1-deoxynojirimycin (1-DNJ), which is retrievable from timber residues and retains activity even days after wood extraction. This makes Bagassa guianensis a promising biological resource for anticancer therapy and pharmacology studies. This study delves into the in vitro antineoplastic actions of 1-DNJ, focusing on adenocarcinoma gastric cell lines (ACP02) and glioblastoma (A172).Methods: The effect of 1-DNJ on cell viability was evaluated after 72 hours of treatment in the ACP02 and A172 cell lines. We also assessed the effect of 1-DNJ on the pattern of cell migration, cell death, changes in the cell cycle by flow cytometry, the production of reactive oxygen, and its antioxidant capacity in the scavenging of free radicals.Results: Assessing cell viability after 72 h (about 3 days) of treatment reveals a remarkable reduction, particularly in glioblastoma cells (A172), exhibiting a lower IC50 compared to ACP02 and MRC5 (fibroblast derived from normal lung tissue) cell lines. This decreased viability correlates with reduced reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in both cell lines after the treatment with 1-DNJ. Furthermore, 1-DNJ induces cell cycle arrest, impedes cell migration, and prompts cell death in ACP02 and A172.Discussion: These findings support 1-DNJ as a potent antineoplastic agent, particularly efficacious against glioblastoma and gastric adenocarcinoma. Thus, unveiling the therapeutic potential of Bagassa guianensis Aubl for cancer treatment and expanding the horizons of bioeconomy applications.

TEVAR (thoracic endovascular aortic repair) is the preferred approach for treating descending thoracic aortic aneurysm (DTAA). After the procedure, patients require lifelong CTA (computed tomography angiography) follow-up to monitor the aorta’s remodeling process and the possible development of associated complications. With CTA, the aorta is usually measured with maximum diameters taken at specific locations, and even in experienced centers, this type of evaluation is prone to inter-observer variability. We introduce a new volumetric analysis of aortic changes after TEVAR using three-dimensional (3D) anatomical models. We applied the volumetric analysis to 24 patients who underwent TEVAR for DTAA. For each patient, the descending thoracic aorta was evaluated using both the maximum diameter from CTA and the volume from 3D reconstructions, at discharge and 12 months after TEVAR. Both volume and diameter evaluations were then related to the development of TEVAR complications. The group with TEVAR-related complications showed a 10% volume increase in the descending aorta, while the group with no TEVAR-related complications only had a 1% increase. An increase of 40 mL in the descending aorta volume at 12 months seemed to be predictive of complications, with 94% specificity and 75% sensitivity. Volumetric analysis is a promising method for monitoring DTAA remodeling after TEVAR, and it may help in the early identification of high-risk patients who may benefit from a stricter follow-up, even if further evaluations on a larger sample size are required to confirm these preliminary results.

To investigate how contextual or environmental factors may influence the athletic performance of female soccer players during competitions, this study aimed to assess the impact of match-related variables (playing surface; opponent levels; opponent result trends; match status, and match outcomes) on the athletic performance of professional female soccer athletes. Seventeen athletes (25.5 ± 4.3 years of age) from the same team competing in the Italian second division were divided into two groups according to their roles and athletic characteristics: Group A (central defenders and forwards) and Group B (right/left full-backs and midfielders). Total distance (TD) and sprint distance (SD); high-speed running (HSR), acceleration (ACC), and deceleration numbers (DEC); average and maximal heart rate (HR_avg; HR_max); and match-related factors were collected during the 22 regular season matches. A T-test and ANOVA were used to calculate the differences between groups in GPS and HR variables and the effects of match-related factors, respectively. Results showed higher running performance in the B group compared to the A group during matches. Increased ACC number was seen in matches played on artificial turf; winning was associated with decreased HR_max and increased DEC number. Athletes covered higher TD reaching lower HR_max when playing against lower-ranking opponents while matches lost/drawn resulted in higher HSR. High HRs (max and avg) were found when playing against a team with a positive performance trend. In summary, match-related factors and opponents’ characteristics can affect athletic performance in female soccer athletes. These factors should be considered during in-seasonal training to personalize match preparation and optimize athlete performance.
