This study examines the stylistic linguistic features of a collection of suicide notes retrieved from the online platform Reddit from the period (2012–2020). It aims to conduct a detailed corpus-based stylistic analysis. Furthermore, it aims at checking specific selected stylistic categories. The quantitative analysis was performed using WordSmith 8.0 software which helps to identify keywords in context. Keywords are indicators of the style of the language of the selected corpus. The analysis result indicated that the redditors in the online suicide corpus usually included simple words with fairly short sentences. Their writings tend to be less lexically diverse, concentrating on one or two themes with a lower TTR (type-token ratio), which indicated that their words were relatively repetitive. Online suicide notes show high frequency in using first-person singular pronouns, and concerning the distribution of content words, the verbs were the most frequently used part of speech, followed by nouns, adjectives, and adverbs. Furthermore, the keywords list helps to reveal stylistic and linguistic elements.

Resumo: O presente trabalho consiste na descrição e comparação de dois softwares de análise lexical, o WordSmith Tools (WST) e o Sketch Engine (SE). O corpus de estudo selecionado para a realização da análise comparativa entre os programas denomina-se LexTest, é composto por artigos, dissertações, resenhas e teses da área da Lexicologia, escritos em língua portuguesa, e apresenta 552.903 tokens. Os aspectos analisados no WST e no SE são: interface, configuração de línguas, upload de corpus, número de tokens e types, etiquetagem do corpus, lista de palavras, lista de palavras-chave; acesso às linhas de concordância, entre outros. A partir das análises comparativas, foi possível concluir que o WST e o SE são eficazes no que se propõem, uma vez que, por exemplo, processam palavras-chave, permitem configurar a língua conforme o corpus de estudo e calculam o número de tokens de um corpus. Entretanto, dependendo do objetivo da pesquisa, um desses softwares pode ser mais apropriado que o outro. A escolha pela utilização de um deles é de responsabilidade do pesquisador, que poderá consultar o quadro comparativo entre o WST e o SE apresentado no final deste artigo para fundamentar a sua preferência. Abstract: The present work consists of the description and comparison of two lexical analysis software, WordSmith Tools (WST) and Sketch Engine (SE). The study corpus selected for the comparative analysis between the programs is called LexTest which is composed of articles, dissertations, reviews and theses about Lexicology. These texts are written in Portuguese, and the corpus has 552,903 tokens. The aspects analyzed in the WST and in the SE are: interface, language settings, corpus upload, number of tokens and types, corpus tagging, word list, keyword list, access to concordance lines, and so on. Based on the comparative analyzes, it was possible to conclude that the WST and the SE are effective in their purpose, because, for example, they process the keywords and allow configuring the language according to the study corpus and calculate the number of tokens; however, depending on the purpose of the research, one of these programs may be more appropriate than the other. The choice of one of them will be responsibility of the researcher, who may consult the comparative table between the WST and the SE, presented at the end of this paper to substantiate his or her preference. El uso de Internet y de sus posibilidades de persuasión e interacción ha convertido a los ciudadanos en actores políticos. Internet y las nuevas tecnologías no son un medio más, sino el reflejo organizativo de la nueva cultura política del ciberactivismo. Esta investigación ofrece datos sobre las características que tiene esa interacción dentro de un proceso de movilización política. Se ha empleado la herramienta de organización subreddit Plaza Podemos para descubrir si su uso expansivo se muestra eficaz para los foros virtuales del debate político comunitario. Se han obtenido datos de 100 hilos discursivos publicados en Plaza Podemos entre el 23 de abril y el 30 de septiembre de 2015. Se concluye que los usuarios de esta plataforma la usan en esencia para censurar las opiniones discrepantes que contradicen el criterio ideológico de un grupo de usuarios de la comunidad.

Este artigo tem o objetivo da avaliar a aplicação de dois métodos automáticos eficientes na extração de palavras-chave, usados pelas comunidades da Linguística de Corpus e do Processamento da Língua Natural para gerar palavras-chave de textos literários: o WordSmith Tools e o Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA). As duas ferramentas escolhidas para este trabalho têm suas especificidades e técnicas diferentes de extração, o que nos levou a uma análise orientada para a sua performance. Objetivamos entender, então, como cada método funciona e avaliar sua aplicação em textos literários. Para esse fim, usamos análise humana, com conhecimento do campo dos textos usados. O método LDA foi usado para extrair palavras-chave por meio de sua integração com o Portal Min@s: Corpora de Fala e Escrita, um sistema geral de processamento de corpora, concebido para diferentes pesquisas de Linguística de Corpus. Os resultados do experimento confirmam a eficácia do WordSmith Tools e do LDA na extração de palavras-chave de um corpus literário, além de apontar que é necessária a análise humana das listas em um estágio anterior aos experimentos para complementar a lista gerada automaticamente, cruzando os resultados do WordSmith Tools e do LDA. Também indicam que a intuição linguística do analista humano sobre as listas geradas separadamente pelos dois métodos usados neste estudo foi mais favorável ao uso da lista de palavras-chave do WordSmith Tools.

Log-likelihood and Chi-square tests are probably the most popular statistical tests used in corpus linguistics, especially when the research is aiming to describe the lexical variations between corpora. However, because this specific use of the Chi-square test is not valid, it produces far too many significant results. This paper explains the source of the problem (i.e., the non-independence of the observations), the reasons for which the usual solutions are not acceptable and which kinds of statistical test should be used instead. A corpus analysis conducted on the lexical differences between American and British English is then reported, in order to demonstrate the problem and to confirm the adequacy of the proposed solution. The last section presents the commands that can be used with WordSmith Tools, a very popular software for corpus processing, to obtain the necessary data for the adequate tests, as well as a very easy-to-use procedure in R, a free and easy to install statistical software, that performs these tests.

Um dos grandes fenômenos linguísticos da vida política brasileira recente é o que a mídia vem chamando de 'metáforas do presidente Lula'. O ponto de partida deste trabalho é o fato de que deve haver muitas metáforas que passam despercebidas no discurso do presidente e que podem ser descobertas por meio de pesquisa com corpora eletrônicos. Investigamos a presença de metáforas conceptuais relacionadas a 'desenvolvimento' em um corpus composto por pronunciamentos emitidos ao longo de três anos pelo presidente Luís Inácio Lula da Silva. Os resultados indicam que há uso sistemático de três conceitos metafóricos que definem a noção de desenvolvimento do chefe de Estado: VIAGEM, CONSTRUÇÃO e ORGANISMO. Esses três conceitos, em geral, equacionam desenvolvimento com um processo longo, construído, planejado e gerado pelo governo.One of the main linguistic phenomena in recent Brazilian politics is what the media has called 'President Lula's metaphors'. The starting point for the present investigation is that there must be lots of metaphors that go unnoticed in the president's discourse and that these may be uncovered by corpus-based research. We looked at the presence of conceptual metaphors related to 'development' in a corpus of three years of official presidential speeches. The results indicated the systematic use of three metaphorical concepts that together define the notion of development for the head of State: JOURNEY, BUILDING and ORGANISM. These three concepts together equate development with a long process that is generated, planned and carried out by the government.

Um dos procedimentos mais delicados envolvidos numa análise de corpus via palavras-chave com WordSmith Tools KeyWords é a seleção de um sub-conjunto de palavras para serem investigadas em detalhe. A seleção se faz necessária, via de regra, porque o tamanho do léxico chave de um corpus de estudo é em geral muito grande, em geral em torno de 1500 palavras ou até mais. Uma maneira de fazer esse recorte consiste na extração de palavras-chave exclusivas. O léxico chave exclusivo é composto das palavras-chave que ocorrem somente no corpus de estudo em questão em comparação com palavras-chave de outros corpora de estudo. Contudo, comparar a lista de palavras-chave com várias outras é um procedimento custoso e complicado, que não pode ser exigido da maioria dos usuários de WordSmith Tools KeyWords. Uma alternativa para este cenário seria a aplicação de um ponto de corte generalizado baseado em tendências de retorno de palavras-chave observadas através da aplicação do banco de palavras-chave existente. Tal ponto de corte indicaria a região da lista de palavras-chave na qual há maior probabilidade de ocorrência do léxico chave exclusivo. Os resultados obtidos aqui indicam um ponto de corte entre 31% a 53% das palavras da lista, a partir da primeira de uma lista ordenada por chavicidade.One of the most sensitive issues surrounding a keywords analysis with WordSmith Tools is the selection of a subset of words in a corpus that deserve being looked at in greater detail. This selection is normally needed because the size of the key word list can reach several hundred, up to 1,500 or more. One way to extract a selection consists of the pulling out 'exclusive key words'. This key lexis is made up of keywords that only in a single corpus only, in comparison with a bank of keyword lists. Nevertheless, comparing several keyword lists together is a demanding task, which most users of WordSmith Tools are not expected to cope with. An alternative would be the application of a general cut-off point, established through previous uses of the keyword bank. Such a cut-off point would indicate the section of a keyword list where it would be more likely to find exclusive keywords, with a certain degree of likelihood. The results obtained here suggest that the area corresponding to the top 31% to 53% of a keyword list are more likely to contain exclusive keywords.

A KeyWords analysis (using WordSmith Tools) enables the discovery of lexical items which reveal the main lexical sets in a text or corpus. Such an analysis requires that a reference corpus be compared to the corpus the researcher intends to describe (the study corpus). This paper presents a mathematical method for finding out the influence of reference corpus size on the number of key words extracted by the program. The results reveal that a reference corpus that is at least five times as large as the study corpus allows for drawing an amount of key words that is statistically equivalent to larger reference corpora, thus suggesting five times (as larger as the study corpora) as the minimum order of magnitude for reference corpora.

Abstract: Worldwide, semi-automatically extracting terms from corpora is becoming the norm for the compilation of terminology lists, term banks or dictionaries for special purposes. If Africanlanguage terminologists are willing to take their rightful place in the new millennium, they must not only take cognisance of this trend but also be ready to implement the new technology. In this article it is advocated that the best way to do the latter two at this stage, is to opt for computationally straightforward alternatives (i.e. use 'raw corpora') and to make use of widely available software tools (e.g. WordSmith Tools). The main aim is therefore to discover whether or not the semiautomatic extraction of terminology from untagged and unmarked running text by means of basic corpus query software is feasible for the African languages. In order to answer this question a fullblown case study revolving around Northern Sotho linguistic texts is discussed in great detail. The computational results are compared throughout with the outcome of a manual excerption, and vice versa. Abstract: Corpus-based terminology is currently gaining ground on the international front. Itis therefore important that terminologists working on the South African Bantu languages not onlytake note of this development, but that they should also follow this trend, even if they do not havethe same measure of access to highly sophisticated software. The aim of this article is therefore toestablish whether it is possible to retrieve definitional information on key concepts from untagged,running text by making use of affordable and easily accessible software such as WordSmith Tools. Inorder to answer this question, a case study is done in Northern Sotho, using textual material onlinguistics as basis for a special field corpus. Syntactic and lexical patterns serving as textual markersof definitional information are identified and the success rate of the computational retrieval ofdefinitional information is analysed and evaluated. Attention is also paid to the retrieval of specificallyconceptual information, which turned out to be a fortunate by-product of semi-automaticretrieval of definitional information. Pretendemos mostrar, aqui, como a Linguística de Corpus pode contribuir para a avaliação da Tradução Literária. Trata-se de uma metodologia que pode explorar, inclusive pela via estatística, uma grande quantidade de textos, percebendo-lhes padrões de ocorrência (de palavras ou expressões), que poderiam passar despercebidas devido ao próprio tamanho dos textos analisados. Também temos a possibilidade de determinar rapidamente concordâncias, definir palavras-chave, baseando-se em frequências de ocorrência, além de outros procedimentos relevantes para a tarefa de tradução. Para tanto, utilizaremos o programa WordSmith Tools, de Mike Scott (1998, versão 3), aplicando a abordagem da Linguística de Corpus na avaliação do conto “A Mother”, um dos quinze contos de Dubliners, de James Joyce (1914), e de duas traduções, uma de Hamilton Trevisan (1964) e outra de José Roberto O’Shea (1992). Entendemos que a avaliação de um texto literário supõe dois momentos; no primeiro, acontece a análise do texto original, na busca de suas características especiais, tanto de forma como de conteúdo. No segundo, dá-se o estudo comparado do texto original e suas traduções. Procederemos dessa forma em nossa avaliação, observando escolhas e soluções dos tradutores, numa perspectiva mais descritiva do que prescritiva, mas também apontando inadequações, na tentativa de perceber suas causas e, se possível, sugerindo novas possibilidades.

KeyWords is a very useful program for computer text analysis found in WordSmith Tools. A problem with KeyWords, though, is the large number of keywords returned by the program, which can be at least 500. This paper proposes a procedure for making reductions in lists of keywords based on the concept of exclusive keywords. These are words that are key in the study corpus only, in comparison to lots of others. This procedure draws on the existence of a keyword bank, which is a collection of keywords from several corpora. When contrasted to a study corpus, the keyword bank brings up keywords that are found in the study corpus only, leaving out those that are key in other corpora. This enables the researcher to focus on words that are most typical of his/her own corpus. The analysis reported here, carried out with a large multi-register keyword bank, suggests that the keyword bank achieved its goal, by allowing for a 77% reduction in the total keywords, and by selecting keywords that are most representative of the study corpus in question.
