Heme iron absorption during pregnancy and the role of hepcidin in regulating dietary heme iron absorption remains largely unexplored. The objective of this research was to examine relative differences in heme (animal based) and nonheme (ferrous sulfate) iron utilization. This study was undertaken in 18 pregnant (ages 16-32 y; wk 32-35 of gestation) and 11 nonpregnant women (ages 18-27 y). Women were randomly assigned to receive both an animal-based heme meal (intrinsically labeled [sup.58]Fe pork) and labeled ferrous sulfate ([sup.57]Fe) fed on alternate days. Blood samples obtained 2 wk postdosing were used to assess iron status indicators and serum hepcidin and iron utilization based on RBC incorporation of iron isotopes. Heme iron utilization was significantly greater than nonheme iron utilization in the pregnant (47.7 [+ or -] 14.4 vs. 40.4 [+ or -] 13.2%) and nonpregnant women (50.1 [+ or -] 14.8 vs. 15.3 [+ or -] 9.7%). Among pregnant women, utilization of nonheme iron was associated with iron status, as assessed by the serum transferrin receptor concentration (P = 0.003; [r.sup.2] = 0.43). In contrast, heme iron utilization was not influenced by maternal iron status. In the group as a whole, women with undetectable serum hepcidin had greater nonheme iron utilization compared with women with detectable serum hepcidin (P = 0.02; n = 29); however, there were no significant differences in heme iron utilization. Our study suggests that iron utilization from an animal-based food provides a highly bioavailable source of dietary iron for pregnant and nonpregnant women that is not as sensitive to hepcidin concentrations or iron stores compared with ferrous sulfate. Despite its long history in clinical use, reported efficacy rates of griseofulvin remain highly variable. A meta-analysis of clinical trials of griseofulvin use in tinea capitis was performed to determine mean griseofulvin efficacy. A review of the literature identified 7 studies. When all 7 studies were pooled, the overall mean effective cure (negative KOH and culture) of griseofulvin at 4 to 6 weeks posttreatment was 73.4%[+ or -]7% (7 studies, n=438 patients). Higher efficacy rates appeared to be reported with the use of higher dosages of griseofulvin (>18 mg/kg/d). When broken down by species, the mean efficacy for Trichophyton and Microsporum were 67.6%[+ or -]9% (5 studies, n=396) and 88.1%[+ or -]5% (2 studies, n=42 patients), respectively. Based on these studies, griseofulvin efficacy has remained consistently high over the past decade. Both genera showed good efficacy with griseofulvin therapy given from 6 to 8 weeks. The modern dancer Helen Tamiris played an important part in the Works Progress Administration's Federal Dance Theatre. Tamaris helped develop and produce dance pieces for the public that addressed problems common to everyone. Tamiris left her own dance company and school to devote herself to this effort. Congress, perceiving the organization as filled with Communists, ended the program after four years. Tamiris's association with the program affected her professional reputation.

The authors explore determinants of academic recognition, reasoning that social scientists' advancement and career success may rest on the recognition recieved for scholarly work. Articles in the Journal of Applied Psychology are classifed by the number and type of their research plots. Research plots, like plots in English literature, represent the basic skeleton of an article, the barebones scientific contribution an article claims to make (e.g., new independent variable explaining variance in an existing dependent variable). The type of research plot an article explores is related in this study to the subsequent recognition an article receives. In contrast, neither number of research plots nor popularity of the subject matter covered in an article independently affected the level of subsequent recognition. Changes in union, organizational, and dual commitment were investigated by surveying 267 faculty members at a northeastern university. Some 146 faculty members were surveyed at the beginning of contract negotiations, and an additional 121 were surveyed six-and-a-half months later, after settlement of the contract. The results indicated that both organizational commitment and dual commitment increased, pay equity was associated with organizational commitment, and the achievement of desirable pay outcomes enhanced organizational commitment. The correlational method and the classification method of measuring dual commitment were able to demonstrate relationships between union and organizational commitment. The H.L. Angle and J.L. Perry method of measuring dual commitment was not a reliable technique.

The concept of differential equity allows individuals to have different perceptions of equity depending on the pay referent used. Different pay referents should result in different tactics to reduce inequities. To test this hypothesis, equity perceptions with respect to seven different referents were compared as to their relationship to pay satisfaction, intent to remain with a company, and frequency of extra-role behavior. Findings suggest that the various types of inequity relate differentially to each of the three outcome variables. (Reprinted by permission of the publisher.)
