A molecular beam of europium-cyclooctatetraene sandwich nanowires Eu(sub n)(COT)(sub m) was produced by a laser vaporization synthesis method. The results confirmed that the growth processes extending the length of Eu-COT nanowires involved a series of elementary reactions in which efficient charge transfer occurred at the terminal reaction sites.

The gas-phase synthesis of the multiple-decker sandwich complexes of lanthanide-1,3,5,7-cyclooctatetraene Ln(n)(C8H8)(n+1) for five Ln metals of Ce, Nd, Eu, Ho and Yb was described. The organometallic lanthanide compounds were prepared by a combination of molecular beam and laser vaporization techniques. Experimental results showed that the complexes, which were produced as magic numbers in the mass spectra, form multiple-decker sandwich structures in which C8H8 molecules and lanthanide atoms are stacked up one after the other.

The formation and structural properties of transition metal-C60 binary clusters were investigated. The clusters were generated in the gas phase by a two-laser vaporization technique. Clusters with the composition of (n, m) = (1, 1)(super +), (1, 2)(super +), (2, 3)(super +), (3, 4)(super +), (4, 4)(super +) and (5, 5)(super +) were predominantly generated. The geometrical and electronic structures of the binary clusters were analyzed based on ionization energy calculations for neutral Mn(C60)m and a chemical probe technique using CO, O2 and C2H4 as reactants.

A study was conducted relating to research on modifying the third form of carbon (fullerene) by coordinating atoms inside and outside the cage structures of these carbon allotropes. The experiment focused on the properties of Co-C60 by using laser vaporization, chemical probe and photoionization techniques. Another superstructure of Con(C60)m was found that could be explained by the formation of a tricapped Co(C60)3 unit. Experimental methods, results and implications are presented.

Niobium-carbon Met-Car cluster ion ([([Nb.sub.n][C.sub.m]).sup.+]) is prepared with every combination of n and m in the gas phase by the laser vaporization technique. A dehydrogenation-controlled formation mechanism of niobium-carbon Met-Car cluster ions is described based on the [H.sub.2] affinity of [([Nb.sub.n][C.sub.m]).sup.+].

The magnetic deflections results for the newly prepared multilayer lanthanide-cyclooctatetraene organometallic clusters, [Ln.sub.n][([C.sub.8][H.sub.8]).sub.m] (where Ln = Eu, Tb, Ho, Tm; n = 1-7, and m = n-1, n, n+1) is presented. The result show [Eu.sub.n][([C.sub.8][H.sub.8]).sub.n+1] cluster to have promising potential as a candidate for a high-spin, one-dimensional building block in organometallic magnetic materials.

The various Stern-Gerlach experiments of the one-dimensional metal-benzene organometallic sandwich clusters [M.sub.n][([C.sub.6][H.sub.6]).sub.m] (M=Al, Sc, Ti, and V) are presented. These species are found to form a new class of one-dimensional molecular magnets having zerovalent transition-metal atoms.

The photoionization spectroscopy of the neutrals and photoelectron spectroscopy of the anions are carried out to investigate the electronic properties of silicon and germanium atom doped indium clusters, [In.sub.n][Si.sub.m] and [In.sub.n][Ge.sub.m]. Result shows that symmetry lowering with the dopant like Si or Ge results in the undegeneration of the Id shell caused by monovalent indium (In) atoms.

Mass spectroscopy, anion photoelectron spectroscopy, photoionization spectroscopy, and theoretical calculations were employed to investigate the geometric and electronic structures of aluminum binary clusters, [Al.sub.n]X (X = Si and P). Experimental and theoretical results reveal that Al12Si possesses a high ionization energy and low electron affinity and Al12P possesses a low ionization energy, both with the icosahedral structure having a central Si or P atom, revealing that Al12Si and Al12P exhibit rare-gas-like and alkali superatoms, respectively.

A molecular beam deflection results for a novel class of high-spin molecular magnets such as 1D, multidecker organometallic sandwich clusters formed from vanadium and benzene, is reported. The magnetic moments are found to increase with the number of vanadium atoms in the cluster showing that the unpaired electrons on the metal atoms couple ferromagnetically.
