Nguyen (a), Jerman Rose (b) Keywords: Trust; Institutional theory; Social exchange theory; Vietnam Abstract: In the context of underdeveloped market institutions, entrepreneurs in a transition economy are forced to rely on trust-based partnerships. In the absence of effective market institutions and sufficient elapsed time, these entrepreneurial firms find a great need to actively and intentionally develop trust with their partners. The current literature, however, has virtually overlooked the possibility of trust being intentionally developed in interfirm relationships. This study develops a model that links trust development strategies, trust, and interfirm collaboration, and reports an empirical test of that model in Vietnam. The results support the general thesis that trust can be intentionally developed to facilitate interfirm relationships. Abstract

Byline: Thang V. Nguyen, Lam T.T. Dao, Chi T.T. Pham The radical economic reforms sweeping through former socialist countries over the 1015 years have created the need to transform state-owned enterprises (SOEs) into market-oriented companies. In the specific case of Vietnam, this is a challenging process, as a number of managers and workers still unconsciously subscribe to a traditional management ideology. Based on interview data from seven SOEs' top managers, this paper argues that SOEs' traditional management ideology needs to be changed if economic reforms are to be effective. As the ideology tends to be unconsciously held, rational learning has little impact. Thus, company privatisation and management re-education the most common approaches in SOE reform cannot by themselves create entrepreneurial and innovative managers. Instead, there is a need to create opportunities for a new generation of managers to be in a position of corporate power and lead the change.

Review of the literatures on trust and knowledge sharing and establishment of dynamic conceptualizations of both concepts is undertaken. An attempt is made to develop and integrate trust development (TD) and knowledge sharing (KS) in a dynamic setting and the TD/KS model is presented, which describes how alliances are formed, developed and dissolved, based on level of trust and knowledge sharing between partners.
