Translational research applies laboratory-generated scientific discoveries to real-world practice with the goal of potentiating more rapid solutions to health challenges. In 2023, the authors of this editorial (Hildebrandt and Goldschmidt) aimed to develop a special issue for the International Journal of Eating Disorders (IJED) focusing on translational eating disorder research. The goal for this issue was to begin closing the gap between basic and applied research by soliciting articles that improve our understanding of mechanisms that cause or maintain eating disorders, which could result in more robust research advances and dissemination of information to the public. Further goals for the issue included exposing IJED's readership to a wide range of translational research and inspiring new collaborative efforts. While strong submissions were received, challenges were encountered in soliciting enough articles, potentially reflecting long-standing communication barriers between basic and clinical scientists within the eating disorders field. In this editorial, we highlight work included in the special section, identify potential barriers in translational eating disorder research, and offer a multipronged approach to support more rapid progress across the translational spectrum. With the emphasis placed by society on environmental resources, current petroleum-based packaging in the food industry can no longer meet people's needs. However, new active packaging technologies have emerged, such as proteins, polysaccharides, and lipids, in which proteins are widely used for their outstanding gel film-forming properties. Most of the current literature focuses on research applications of single protein-based films. In this paper, we review the novel protein-based packaging technologies that have been used in recent years to categorize different proteins, including plant proteins (soybean protein isolate, zein, gluten protein) and animal proteins (whey protein isolate, casein, collagen, gelatin). The advances that have recently been made in protein-based active packaging technology can be understood by describing protein sources, gel properties, molding principles, and applied research. This paper presents the current problems and prospects of active packaging technology, provides new ideas for the development of new types of packaging and the expansion of gel applications in the future, and promotes the development and innovation of environmentally friendly food packaging.

Lycium ruthenicum Murray possesses significant applications in both food and medicine, including antioxidative, anti-tumor, anti-fatigue, anti-inflammatory, and various other effects. Consequently, there has been a surge in research endeavors dedicated to exploring its potential benefits, necessitating the organization and synthesis of these findings. This article systematically reviews the extraction and content determination methods of active substances such as polysaccharides, anthocyanins, flavonoids, and polyphenols in LRM in the past five years, as well as some active ingredient composition determination methods, biological activities, and product development. This review is divided into three main parts: extraction and determination methods, their bioactivity, and product development. Building upon prior research, we also delve into the economic and medicinal value of Lycium ruthenicum Murray, thereby contributing significantly to its further exploration and development. It is anticipated that this comprehensive review will serve as a valuable resource for advancing research on Lycium ruthenicum Murray.

US health systems are required to conduct community health needs assessments (CHNAs). These assessments often rely solely on publicly reported disease prevalence data. The objective of this study was to identify a feasible qualitative method that can be implemented into CHNAs to confirm existing information and enhance them with new data and community narrative. Freelisting interviews were conducted in 2017 throughout a county in Pennsylvania. Individuals listed (1) things that improve health, (2) health problems, and (3) health barriers. Responses were grouped into like terms, Smith's salience index was calculated for each, subgroup variation was assessed. Community-reported health priorities were identified by salient terms juxtaposed with publicly reported disease prevalence data. 98 respondents throughout the county participated in freelisting interviews. Demographics resembled the population: median age 55, 46% female, 88% Caucasian, 9% uninsured. Salient terms that improve health included: "physical activity", "healthy eating", and "health services". Salient terms describing health problems included: "cardiovascular disease" and "spine and joint disease". Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)-reported chronic disease prevalence in the county included heart disease mortality (22% of deaths) and arthritis (26% of adults). Salient barriers to health included: "weight, physical activity, and dietary concerns", as well as "occupational concerns". This is in line with 2017 County Health Rankings related to obesity (reported 29%), however, while 10% were uninsured in the community, this was not a salient term. Freelisting can augment and inform CHNAs. We join others in envisioning a future for affective science that addresses society's most pressing needs. To move toward this vision, we consider a research paradigm that emerged in other disciplines: use-inspired basic research. This paradigm transcends the traditional basic-applied dichotomy, which pits the basic goal of fundamental scientific understanding against the applied goal of use in solving social problems. In reality, these goals are complementary, and use-inspired basic research advances them simultaneously. Here, we build a case for use-inspired basic research-how it differs from traditional basic science and why affective scientists should engage in it. We first examine how use-inspired basic research challenges problematic assumptions of a strict basic-applied dichotomy. We then discuss how it is consistent with advances in affective science that recognize context specificity as the norm and consider ethical issues of use being a complementary goal. Following this theoretical discussion, we differentiate the implementation of use-inspired basic research from that of traditional basic science. We draw on examples from recent research to illustrate differences: social problems as a starting point, stakeholder and community engagement, and integration of research and service. The five commentaries on the target article "Generalizations: The Grail and the Gremlins" (Bauer, 2023) provide food for thought on the issue of generalizations in psychological science. Generally speaking, there seems to be agreement in the field that unrecognized limits on the generalizability of the findings of psychological science research are a matter of serious concern. This reply to the commentaries features elaboration of this basic point of agreement as well as discussion of other points of convergence with the arguments in the target article. The reply also addresses areas of divergence between the target article and the commentaries, and among the commentaries themselves. The reply develops suggestions for ways forward inspired by the commentaries. Echoing the target article, the reply calls for greater authenticity in psychological science research, movement toward which would strengthen efforts along the full range of inquiry, from basic to applied.

Background: Within pediatric health care services, Patient-reported Outcomes (PROs) regarding the patient's health status are mainly used for research purposes in a chronic care setting. However, PROs are also applied in clinical settings in the routine care of children and adolescents with chronic health conditions. PROs have the potential to involve patients because they 'place the patient at the center' of his or her treatment. The investigation of how PROs are used in the treatment of children and adolescents and how this use can influence the involvement of these patients is still limited. The aim of this study was to investigate how children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes (T1D) experience the use of PROs in their treatment with a focus on the experience of involvement., Results: Employing Interpretive Description, 20 semi-structured interviews were conducted with children and adolescents with T1D. The analysis revealed four themes related to the use of PROs: Making room for conversation, Applying PROs under the right circumstances, Questionnaire structure and content, and Becoming partners in health care., Conclusions: The results clarify that, to some extent, PROs fulfill the potential they promise, including patient-centered communication, detection of unrecognized problems, a strengthened patient-clinician (and parent-clinician) partnership, and increased patient self-reflection. The practice of rural construction has been exploring and trying to adapt to the needs of rural development in various periods. In recent years, under the attention and promotion of the central policy, various social forces have joined the ranks of rural construction, and art intervention in rural construction has begun as a new method. Entering the public eye, it deeply intervenes in the construction and development of the countryside in a more gentle way, from the key point of interaction between the social and cultural orientation and the material needs of the countryside. However, most of the art interventions in rural construction practice only unilaterally use artistic techniques to beautify local areas or display works, without realizing the hidden artistic and cultural value of the village and ignoring the participation and role of the villagers in the whole process. After the construction is completed, once the foreign construction forces are withdrawn, the development of the village will stagnate. Therefore, mobilizing the main body of rural construction (original villagers) to participate in the joint construction of the village is an important link to solve the current problems of art intervening in the construction of rural settlements.

Preregistration is the practice of publicly publishing plans on central components of the research process before access to, or collection, of data. Within the context of the replication crisis, open science practices like preregistration have been pivotal in facilitating greater transparency in research. However, such practices have been applied nearly exclusively to basic academic research, with rare consideration of the relevance to applied and consultancy-based research. This is particularly problematic as such research is typically reported with very low levels of transparency and accountability despite being disseminated as influential gray literature to inform practice. Evidence-based practice is best served by an appreciation of multiple sources of quality evidence, thus the current review considers the potential of preregistration to improve both the accessibility and credibility of applied research toward more rigorous evidence-based practice. The current three-part review outlines, first, the opportunities of preregistration for applied research, and second, three barriers - practical challenges, stakeholder roles, and the suitability of preregistration. Last, this review makes four recommendations to overcome these barriers and maximize the opportunities of preregistration for academics, industry, and the structures they are held within - changes to preregistration templates, new types of templates, education and training, and recognition and structural changes.

Background: The Australian First Few X (FFX) Household Transmission Project for COVID-19 was the first prospective, multi-jurisdictional study of its kind in Australia. The project was undertaken as a partnership between federal and state health departments and the Australian Partnership for Preparedness Research on Infectious Disease Emergencies (APPRISE) and was active from April to October 2020., Methods: We aimed to identify and explore the challenges and strengths of the Australian FFX Project to inform future FFX study development and integration into pandemic preparedness plans. We asked key stakeholders and partners involved with implementation to identify and rank factors relating to the strengths and challenges of project implementation in two rounds of modified Delphi surveys. Key representatives from jurisdictional health departments were then interviewed to contextualise findings within public health processes and information needs to develop a final set of recommendations for FFX study development in Australia., Results: Four clear recommendations emerged from the evaluation. Future preparedness planning should aim to formalise and embed partnerships between health departments and researchers to help better integrate project data collection into core public health surveillance activities. The development of functional, adaptable protocols with pre-established ethics and governance approvals and investment in national data infrastructure were additional priority areas noted by evaluation participants., Conclusion: The evaluation provided a great opportunity to consolidate lessons learnt from the Australian FFX Household Transmission Project. Introduction: The transition process from the intensive care unit (ICU) to hospital ward may impact the illness trajectory and compromise the continuity of safe care for ICU survivors. ICU and ward nurses are involved with the transition and are responsible for the quality of the transitional care., Aim: The aim was to explore ICU and ward nurses' views on assignments in relation to patients' transition between ICU and hospital ward., Methods: We conducted a qualitative study with 20 semi-structured interviews with ICU nurses and ward nurses and analysed data by content analysis., Setting: A university hospital with 690 beds and an 11-bed mixed medical/surgical ICU., Findings: The overarching themes were (1) 'Ritual of hand over' with the categories: (a) 'Ready, able and willing', (b) 'Transfer of responsibility' and (c) 'Nice to know versus need to know' and (2) 'From lifesaving care to rehabilitative care' with the categories: (a) 'Complex care needs persist', (b) 'Fight or flight mode' and (c) '"Weaning" the family'. Nurses were highly focused on the ritual of the actual handover of the patient and discussed readiness as an indicator of quality and the feeling of passing on the responsibility. Nurses had different opinions on what useful knowledge was and thus necessary to communicate during handover. Although patients' complex care needs may not have been resolved when exiting the ICU, ward nurses had to receive patients in a setting where nurses were mostly comfortable within their own specialty - this was worrying for both type of nurses. Patients could enter the ward very exhausted and weak or in 'fight mode' and demand rehabilitation at a pace the ward was not capable of delivering. Research-practice partnerships (RPP) provide opportunities to connect researchers, practitioners, and/or community development professionals in meaningful ways, thereby improving the quality of research, evaluation, and practice in communities. Yet, there is still much to learn about how successful partnerships between researchers and practitioners develop. Historically, research on this topic has emphasized challenges that prevent RPP from developing to their highest potential, with limited information available on ways to promote RPP and how to ensure RPP are mutually beneficial for participants. However, research on partnerships more generally, such as multisector partnerships, can contribute meaningfully to the RPP field. We present an in-depth case study on a successful, long-term partnership. In this study, we pull from the broader partnership literature to explore contexts that are likely to promote partnerships, as well as the activities that can strengthen RPP. Findings focus on addressing ways to promote RPP and highlight the importance of preexisting factors, such as a culture that values both researcher and practitioner expertise, history, and chemistry between partners. Additionally, non-professional space and time, productive disagreements, clear but evolving roles, and shared power were found to strengthen collaboration within the partnership. Objective: Timely acquisition of comprehensive and accurate lymph node information from surgically resected specimens of gastric cancer is an important indicator for determining the accuracy of pathological staging and predicting the prognosis of patients., Methods: Use the sorting and analysis system to perform lymph node sorting, image data collection and storage, and intelligent software analysis for gastric cancer lymphoid tissue immediately during or after surgery., Results: The number of lymph nodes obtained by the system was significantly higher than that obtained by the traditional method, the sorting time was shortened, the omission rate of lymph nodes sorting was reduced, the sorting efficiency was improved., Conclusions: The clinical application of sorting and analysis system can effectively improve the coincidence rate of gastric cancer staging, plays a very important role in the prognosis evaluation of patients and the selection of the best treatment plan.

The capacity of self-assessment, to learn from experience, to make information-based decisions, and to adapt over time are essential drivers of success for any project aiming at healthcare system change. Yet, many of those projects are managed by healthcare providers' teams with little evaluation capacity. In this article, we describe the support mission delivered by an interdisciplinary scientific team to 12 integrated care pilot projects in Belgium, mobilizing a set of tools and methods: a dashboard gathering population health indicators, a significant event reporting method, an annual report, and the development of a sustainable "learning community." The article provides a reflexive return on the design and implementation of such interventions aimed at building organizational evaluation capacity. Some lessons were drawn from our experience, in comparison with the broader evaluation literature: The provided support should be adapted to the various needs and contexts of the beneficiary organizations, and it has to foster experience-based learning and requires all stakeholders to adopt a learning posture. Biomimetic research has increased over the last decades, and the development process has been systemized regarding its methods and tools. The aim of biomimetics is to solve practical problems of real-life scenarios. In this context, biomimetics can also address sustainability. To better understand how biomimetics research and development can achieve more sustainable solutions, five projects of applied research have been monitored and analyzed regarding biological models, abstracted biological principles, and the recognition of the applied efficiency strategies. In this manuscript, the way in which sustainability can be addressed is described, possibly serving as inspiration for other projects and topics. The results indicate that sustainability needs to be considered from the very beginning in biomimetic projects, and it can remain a focus during various phases of the development process.

This article offers a summary, synthesis, and highlights of processes, surveys, summits, and discussions among members of the Society for the Study of School Psychology exploring current and historical perspectives as to a potential definition of school psychology research. After multiple revisions, the final definition is as follows: School psychology research is the systematic investigation of phenomena concerning the educational, emotional, behavioral, and social outcomes, as well as the school, family, and societal systems in which these outcomes are imbedded. It is principally concerned with socially responsive implementation and translating research into equitable practices that can lead to improved functioning of students, families, schools, and community systems that support educational and psychological services. It includes basic and applied research and theory development that focuses on a wide array of topics including, for example, prevention, intervention, assessment, diagnosis, diversity, equity and inclusion, measurement, methodology, statistics, and professional issues. This wide range of topics is informed by diverse theories arising from a broad array of disciplines and investigated by researchers from a variety of educational and scientific backgrounds. Common to all of the areas of research inquiry is a focus on enhancing student, family, and community outcomes-particularly educational and social outcomes of all students-and in building the capacity of systems (schools, communities, and other systems) to support those outcomes with a commitment to incorporating social responsiveness in the research process. Working memory capacity is an important psychological construct, and many real-world phenomena are strongly associated with individual differences in working memory functioning. Although working memory and attention are intertwined, several studies have recently shown that individual differences in the general ability to control attention is more strongly predictive of human behavior than working memory capacity. In this review, we argue that researchers would therefore generally be better suited to studying the role of attention control rather than memory-based abilities in explaining real-world behavior and performance in humans. The review begins with a discussion of relevant literature on the nature and measurement of both working memory capacity and attention control, including recent developments in the study of individual differences of attention control. We then selectively review existing literature on the role of both working memory and attention in various applied settings and explain, in each case, why a switch in emphasis to attention control is warranted. Topics covered include psychological testing, cognitive training, education, sports, police decision-making, human factors, and disorders within clinical psychology. Applying rehabilitation research knowledge in practice is challenging due to a gap between scientific knowledge produced by researchers and the needs of practical rehabilitation. This study describes the current and future knowledge needs of rehabilitation research from the perspectives of professionals and service users. We conducted a qualitative study with inductive content analysis from nine focus group interviews with rehabilitation stakeholders. The results show that current knowledge needs are strongly related to the meaningful and inclusive life of service users, the promotion of multi- and interprofessionalism in rehabilitation, and transdisciplinary applied research on rehabilitation. The future knowledge needs were related to the changing needs of rehabilitation and remote rehabilitation based on rapid change in society and digitalisation and on different rehabilitation practices and contexts. In the process of China's rapid development, the society has higher and higher requirements for educational reform. Different from other basic disciplines, design emphasizes practicality, which requires that in the process of design education reform, more attention should be paid to the stimulation of students' subjective initiative and the improvement of students' ability to solve problems in the face of setbacks. This paper methodically expounds on a more scientific manner of curriculum reform fit for China's educational system, based on positive psychology and consideration of grit. It performs research and analysis on the design education curriculum reform on the basis of positive psychology through field research, logical analysis, and other research methodologies. Artificial intelligence (AI) applications can profoundly affect society. Recently, there has been extensive interest in studying how scientists design AI systems for general tasks. However, it remains an open question as to whether the AI systems developed in this way can work as expected in different regional contexts while simultaneously empowering local people. How can scientists co-create AI systems with local communities to address regional concerns? This article contributes new perspectives in this underexplored direction at the intersection of data science, AI, citizen science, and human-computer interaction. Through case studies, we discuss challenges in co-designing AI systems with local people, collecting and explaining community data using AI, and adapting AI systems to long-term social change. This article focuses on the research, design and implementation of a prediction tool for air quality to estimate pollutant concentrations, contributing to environmental engineering. It addresses prediction of fine particle air pollutants of diameter less than 2.5 µm (particulate matter 2.5), their concentration being substantially influenced by urban traffic. We collect worldwide multicity data from health-related public sources on which mining is performed using classical data mining/machine learning paradigms: association rules, clustering and classification. Challenges include adapting appropriate techniques based on data, and capturing subtle domain-specific aspects. The prediction tool is built using knowledge discovered by mining, leveraging health standards, catering to novice, intermediate and expert users. The prediction output is accurate, efficient, interpretable and useful as evident from our experiments. The tool is helpful for urban decision support. This work is beneficial in developing software systems such as intelligent tutors, mobile device apps and smart city tools. It contributes to smart environment, mobility and living, making a positive impact on smart cities and sustainability. In this work, we claim that classical computational paradigms in their fundamental form can be adapted to solve environmental engineering problems, with easy comprehension, as per the Occam's razor principle that advocates simplicity. This article constitutes applied research: using computational techniques to solve domain-specific problems. Future work includes exploring models in deep learning such as CNN and Bi-LSTM, and considering different types of pollutants as well as other sources besides multicity traffic data, to conduct further studies. In this study, we assess the association between academics' research agendas and their preferences for basic research, applied research, or experimental development. Using a sample of Mexican academics working in some of the country's most research-oriented universities, we identify three clusters. The largest is composed of applied research-oriented academics, the second largest is composed of basic research-oriented academics, and the smallest is composed of academics who engage in both basic and applied research, and experimental development. The strategic research agendas of the three clusters are distinguished from each other along four main dimensions: Divergence, Discovery, Mentor Influence, and Social Orientation. These findings show that strategic research agendas are associated with preferences for basic research, applied research, or experimental development, but only to some extent. We also extend the Multi-Dimensional Research Agendas Inventory - Revised, a widely used instrument for measuring strategic research agendas, by adding a new dimension, "Government," and validating the instrument in a new context. The present study explored the shift from understanding to intervention to population impact in the empirical research published in this journal at five points of time over 40 years since the release of DSM-III. Two-thirds of the more than 600 original studies identified involved basic research, a pattern that is consistent with previous analyses of research funding allocations and that did not change over time. One of every eight studies involved intervention research, which occurred in community-based programs only about one-quarter of the time. These gaps in intervention research and community impact did not improve over time. Purpose: To explore the significance of psychological interventions in the nursing care of rectal cancer patients undergoing ostomy surgery., Methods: We recruited 120 rectal cancer patients undergoing ostomy surgery in our hospital from March 2017 to March 2018 as the study cohort, and they were equally and randomly divided into a control group and an observation group. The control group was administered routine nursing, and the observation group was administered routine nursing combined with psychological nursing. The patients' conditions were evaluated using the self-rating anxiety scale (SAS), the self-rating depression scale (SDS), the MOS item short form health survey (SF-36), and their defecation. The two groups' satisfaction levels with the nursing were also compared., Results: The SAS, SDS, HAMA, and HAMD scores in the two groups after the treatment were lower than they were before the treatment, and the observation group was much lower. The SF-36 scores, the patients' defecation, the nursing satisfaction levels, and the sleep durations in the observation group were higher than they were in the control group, and there were fewer incidences of postoperative complications in the observation group than there were in the control group (P < 0.05)., Conclusion: The effects of psychological interventions in the nursing of rectal cancer patients undergoing ostomy surgery are significant. In the recent article, "Descriptive and Normative Ethical Behavior Appear to be Functionally Distinct," the case was presented for an analysis of ethical conduct based on the Western philosophical approach derived from descriptive and normative ethics (Cox, 2020). The author conducted two experiments with graduate students evaluating whether these two approaches were functionally related. Participants gave forced-choice as well as free responses that were later hand-coded. Cox concluded that descriptive and normative ethics are functionally distinct. A critique of this general approach is offered based on a concern that this approach may not be steering the field in a direction that is ultimately useful for practitioners or relevant in therapeutic settings. The research-to-practice gap is evident in many disciplines. This gap can be seen through practitioners failing to integrate the latest research findings into their work, and through the implementation of procedures that do not have empirical support. As the number of behavior-analytic practitioners grows, this gap is likely to become more salient. One solution to closing the gap is for practitioners to conduct applied research. This survey study aimed to identify specific barriers that practitioners face when conducting research, to identify how valuable conducting research is to practitioners, and to make recommendations to support research productivity in practice. This paper analyzes the negotiation process, which leads to basic research funding and price setting for new drugs in regulated health insurance markets. Its results bring answers to the following questions: Should basic research be privately funded, publicly funded, or produced by an independent lab? Under which conditions is public integration of basic research efficient? How do pharmaceutical prices respond to different organizations of basic research? We show that efficiency and prices are higher when basic research is integrated in the firm that commercializes the drug as compared with independent basic research. In both organizations, the higher the negotiation power of the research labs relative to the one of the public health authority is, the higher the prices and the efficiency are. We thereby confirm the traditional trade-off between price containment and dynamic efficiency. We identify one important exception to this trade-off. Objective: To introduce a composite tool called Design Diagnostic that allows a rapid but triangulated insight into key areas of a facility combining the methods of shadowing, behavior mapping, surveys, interviews, photo-essays, and parametric analysis to determine key challenges and opportunities for improvement, identify future design drivers, and recommend simple "do-now" changes., Background: Research-based practice relies on agile and nimble methods to investigate, evaluate, and apply research in project work. This requires the ability to scale methodologies, so they can provide actionable insights in often constrained time lines. Surveys, observations, space analytics, and lit reviews often need to be done in extremely short periods of time. In this article, we share how these processes can be condensed to meet time constraints of project time lines, with the critical reminder not to generalize contextually derived insights., Conclusion: Combining field research (shadowing and behavior mapping) with user engagement (interviews), user feedback (surveys), and analytics of the plan itself allows designers and owners to understand the relationship between design intent and operational outcome and be resource effective in capital planning projects. Scaling these methods to fit the time and resource availability, and ensuring that results are always reviewed and applied in context, is critical.

Since its inception in the 1980s, the growing body of Therapeutic Jurisprudence scholarship has continued to challenge and optimise not only our understanding of what the law "is", but also how we can leverage its agency to improve the ways in which we apply, observe and evaluate the law. By focusing on the emotional, human and psychological consequences of legal processes, Therapeutic Jurisprudence empowers practitioners to design emotionally intelligent and remedial strategies to either minimise harmful consequences or enhance restorative legal goals and outcomes. As the influence of Therapeutic Jurisprudence scholarship and its practical applications has continued to gain traction in rapid and organic growth, collaborations brokered with a wide range of social science disciplines have called for a more robust focus on validated measurement scales. To that end, there is a clear and growing need for a suite of Therapeutic Jurisprudence specific tools for empirical evaluation. As there has been no formal attempt within the Therapeutic Jurisprudence research community to begin this process, this paper breaks new ground by providing a validated tool for empirical measurement of the therapeutic quality of judicial officers' behavioural and interactional styles in problem-solving court jurisdictions. Using original empirical data recently collected at a problem-solving court in England, the paper takes the reader through the journey of statistically validating the levied scaling systems by performing Principal Component Analysis and Cronbach's Alpha. Feather pecking is a prominent issue in the commercial egg industry, associated with economic losses and welfare problems. A non-systematic literature search suggests that studies on feather pecking are predominantly concerned with applied research goals. That is to say, they aim to solve or diminish the effects of this problematic behavior by orienting towards practical approaches. The strong emphasis on this research approach has skewed our knowledge of the causes of feather pecking in relation to welfare. While the need for such research is high, there is an equivalent need for basic research that has not received corresponding effort. Also, current research predominantly focuses on the negative effects on the birds being pecked, whereas too little attention is given to the possible welfare problems of the peckers. We argue that more basic research is needed for obtaining comprehensive science-based knowledge of behavioral needs and abilities of hens, in particular with respect to behavioral problems that threaten their welfare., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflicts of interest.

The need for conservation scientists to produce research of greater relevance to practitioners is now increasingly recognized. This study provides an example of scientists working alongside practitioners and policy makers to address a question of immediate relevance to elephant conservation in Malaysia and using the results to inform wildlife management policy and practice including the National Elephant Conservation Action Plan for Peninsular Malaysia. Since ensuring effective conservation of elephants in the Endau Rompin Landscape (ERL) in Peninsular Malaysia is difficult without data on population parameters we (1) conducted a survey to assess the size of the elephant population, (2) used that information to assess the viability of the population under different management scenarios including translocation of elephants out of the ERL (a technique long used in Malaysia to mitigate human-elephant conflict (HEC)), and (3) assessed a number of options for managing the elephant population and HEC in the future. Our dung-count based survey in the ERL produced an estimate of 135 (95% CI [80-225]) elephants in the 2,500 km 2 area. The population is thus of national significance, containing possibly the second largest elephant population in Peninsular Malaysia, and with effective management elephant numbers could probably double. We used the data from our survey plus other sources to conduct a population viability analysis to assess relative extinction risk under different management scenarios. Our results demonstrate that the population cannot sustain even very low levels of removal for translocation or anything other than occasional poaching. We describe, therefore, an alternative approach, informed by this analysis, which focuses on in situ management and non-translocation-based methods for preventing or mitigating HEC. Background: Current policies regulating the use of animals for scientific purposes are based on balancing between potential gain of knowledge and suffering of animals used in experimentation. The balancing process is complicated, on the one hand by plurality of views on our duties towards animals, and on the other hand by more recent discussions on uncertainty in the probability of reaching the final aim of the research and problems of translational failure., Methods: The study combines ethical analysis based on a literature review with neuropsychiatry-related preclinical research as a case study., Results: Based on the analysis and the case study we show that neuropsychiatry-related preclinical research is an especially interesting case from an ethical perspective. The 3R principles (Replacement, Reduction and Refinement) are used to minimize the negative consequences for the animals used in research. However, neuropsychiatric research is characterized by specific challenges in assessing the probability of success of reaching the final aim, due to our limited mechanistic knowledge of human neuropsychiatric illness. Consequently, the translational value of the currently used animal models may be difficult to prove, which undermines the validity of these models and complicated the ethical assessment., Conclusions: We conclude that a combined approach that deals with both science and the ethical dimensions is necessary to address the problems of validity and translation in neuropsychiatry-related preclinical research. We suggest this approach to comprise first, improved experimental methods, e.g. by using systematic reviews, second, a more patients-based approach that leads to models that reflect interindividual variation better, and third, more interdisciplinary cooperation.

Acute poisoning is a component of emergency medicine and a key public health problem in clinical toxicology. In recent years, the research and development of industrial chemicals and drugs have developed rapidly, and the incidence of acute drug poisoning has been increasing. It is very important to strengthen the application research of clinical toxicology in acute poisoning, to identify rare and new toxic drugs, and to create conditions for rapid detection of toxic substances. Therefore, this article reviews the types of acute poisoning, the epidemiological characteristics, the detection technology and significance of clinical toxicology, the role of clinical toxicology in the treatment of acute poisoning and its application.

Background: The patient-doctor relationship is crucial to provide person-centred care, allowing the alleviation of symptom burden caused by disease or treatment. Implementing Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) is suggested to inform the decision-making process and lead to initiation of care. Yet there are knowledge gaps regarding how meaningful it is to incorporate PROMs in clinical settings. The aim of this study was to investigate haematologists' experiences when PROMs were implemented in an outpatient setting., Methods: Fourteen participant observations, 13 individual interviews and three in-depth interviews were conducted with haematologists, guided by the qualitative methodology Interpretive Description. Analysis was inspired by Habermas' critical theoretical framework., Results: The haematologists included were characterised by dichotomous experiences with PROMs, either resistant to or supporting their implementation. None were observed to elaborate on PROMs during consultations: instead, primary attention was spent discussing the hematological agenda dictated by the system., Conclusion: The use of PROMs for individualized care was linked with extensive uncertainties and PROMs were not requested by the haematologists. To improve individualized care, other approaches may be more suitable. If PROMs are to be incorporated into future clinical practice, they should be tested tothe specific patient group and involve relevant users.

Aims: Describe the implementation and uses of fuzzy cognitive mapping (FCM) as a constructive method for meeting the unique and rapidly evolving needs of nursing inquiry and practice., Design: Discussion paper., Data Sources: Drawing on published scholarship of cognitive mapping from the fields of ecological management, information technology, economics, organizational behaviour and health development, we consider how FCM can contribute to contemporary challenges and aspirations of nursing research., Implications for Nursing: Fuzzy cognitive mapping can generate theory, describe knowledge systems in comparable terms and inform questionnaire design and dialogue. It can help build participant-researcher partnerships, elevate marginalized voices and facilitate intercultural dialogue. As a relatively culturally safe and foundational approach in participatory research, we suggest that FCM should be used in settings of transcultural nursing, patient engagement, person- and family-centred care and research with marginalized populations. FCM is amenable to rigorous analysis and simultaneously allows for greater participation of stakeholders., Conclusion: In highly complex healthcare contexts, FCM can act as a common language for defining challenges and articulating solutions identified within the nursing discipline., Impact: There is a need to reconcile diverse sources of knowledge to meeting the needs of nursing inquiry. We examined self- and cross-citations in the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis (JABA) and the Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior (JEAB) from 2004 through 2018. Mean annual levels of self-citations for JABA and JEAB were 40.1% and 28.7%, respectively. Overall, 5.1% of JABA citations were JEAB articles, and 2.3% of JEAB citations were JABA articles. Although overall cross-citation levels were relatively low, 28.7% of the JABA articles reviewed had at least one JEAB citation, and 27.5% of the JEAB articles reviewed had at least one JABA citation. Authors in both journals cited articles addressing the topics of matching and motivating operations. The extent to which the basic and applied sectors of behavior analysis interact depends on how the interaction is measured. The 25th annual conference of the Health Care Systems Research Network (HCSRN) was held April 10-12 in Portland, Oregon, attracting 420 attendees. The HCSRN, a consortium of 18 community-based research organizations embedded in or affiliated with large health care delivery systems, has hosted annual research conferences since 1994. The primary objective of the conference is to convene researchers, project staff, funders, and other stakeholders to share latest scientific findings and cultivate new partnerships among research teams, patients, and clinicians. Collaboration is the cornerstone of the HCSRN's success; the conference serves as a catalyst for a variety of collaborative ventures as well as tactics and approaches to more effective and efficient research. This year's program included 70 distinct scientific presentations, plus nearly 100 posters, and spanned diverse content offerings that mirrored the diversity of the HCSRN and its collaborators. Public health is critical to a healthy, fair, and sustainable society. Realizing this vision requires imagining a public health community that can maintain its foundational core while adapting and responding to contemporary imperatives such as entrenched inequities and ecological degradation. In this commentary, we reflect on what tomorrow's public health might look like, from the point of view of our collective experiences as researchers in Canada who are part of an Applied Public Health Chairs program designed to support "innovative population health research that improves health equity for citizens in Canada and around the world." We view applied public health research as sitting at the intersection of core principles for population and public health: namely sustainability, equity, and effectiveness. We further identify three attributes of a robust applied public health research community that we argue are necessary to permit contribution to those principles: researcher autonomy, sustained intersectoral research capacity, and a critical perspective on the research-practice-policy interface. Our intention is to catalyze further discussion and debate about why and how public health matters today and tomorrow, and the role of applied public health research therein.

Naturalistic surveillance tasks provide a rich source of eye-tracking data. It can be challenging to make meaningful comparisons using standard eye-tracking analysis techniques such as saccade frequency or blink rate in surveillance studies due to the temporal irregularity of events of interest. Naturalistic research environments present unique challenges, such as requiring specialized or expert analysts, small sample size, and long data collection sessions. These constraints demand rich data and sophisticated analyses, particularly in prescriptive naturalistic environments where problems must be thoroughly understood to implement effective and practical solutions. Using a small sample of expert surveillance analysts and an equal-sized sample of novices, we computed scanpath similarity on a variety of surveillance data using the ScanMatch Matlab tool. ScanMatch implements an algorithm initially developed for DNA protein sequence comparisons and provides a similarity score for two scanpaths based on their morphology and, optionally, duration in an area of interest. Both experts and novices showed equal dwell time on targets regardless of identification accuracy and both samples showed higher scanpath consistency across participants as a function of target type rather than individual subjects showing a particular scanpath preference. Our results show that scanpath analysis can be leveraged as a highly effective computer-based methodology to characterize surveillance identification errors and guide the implementation of solutions. Similarity scores can also provide insight into processes guiding visual search.

As an Age-Friendly University (AFU), University of Akron is striving to support lifelong learning. A collaborative research effort developed between aging researchers at the university and a government-sponsored pilot program aimed to provide learning opportunities for older adults (OA) and engagement for individuals with developmental disabilities (IDD). The present study assessed the success of a pilot program to increase comfort with technology and community engagement. OA and IDD participants met twice a month for 9 months to discuss how to use technology (e.g., an IPad). We assessed satisfaction, perceived changes in comfort with technology, perceived changes in connection with others, and motivations for participating with questionnaires and a structured interview. On average, participants reported very high satisfaction with the group, and moderate increases in comfort with technology and how connected they feel to others as a result of participating in the group. The most common motivations for participation were related to values, strengthening social ties, seeking to learn, and bringing joy to others. These findings suggest that the pilot was successful at improving community engagement. The involvement of the university in the assessment of this pilot program situates the university as an age-friendly partner for community efforts to support lifelong learning.

The majority of biomedical and biological research relies on a few molecular biology techniques. Here we show that eight key molecular biology techniques would not exist without basic biological research. Suggested applications of the method in research and clinical practice are also provided., Background: Organizational learning has been linked to improved clinical performance and other positive outcomes in healthcare. Yet, the theoretical guidance available to researchers and clinical leaders who study and strive to foster organizational learning is sparse. Studying how organizational learning occurs in the healthcare context is a critical step toward addressing this knowledge gap. The learning history, a participatory research method, is specifically designed for studying the organizational learning process. Hospital care is the single, largest contributor to health spending, yet evidence to guide value transformation is lacking. The large, real-world studies required to fill this void are challenging to conduct in the complex and fast-paced acute care environment. To address these challenges, we created a framework that combines Lean manufacturing methodology and Applied Research principles. We deployed this framework to design, pilot, and iteratively improve a study protocol testing the effectiveness of an innovative care pathway for patients hospitalized with acute exacerbations of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. Over a three month period, the protocol was successfully piloted and refined at a single site, subsequently becoming the basis for a large system-wide randomized controlled trial. This framework combining Lean and Applied Research methods resulted in synergies that neither method could accomplish alone and may serve as a template for learning healthcare systems to efficiently generate real-world evidence in the acute care setting.

Research on fatigue often involves foundational research in service of addressing real-world problems. In the research discussed in this paper, we discuss this interplay between basic and applied science to highlight the contributions of basic science to informing policy and decision making to reduce risk and improve safety in this domain. We describe three areas of research-ground combat, flight operations, and fatigue countermeasures-where laboratory studies provide critical evidence regarding the causes and consequences of fatigue in applied settings, and discuss the role of that research in addressing real-world challenges. We close by offering some thoughts on the relationship between basic and applied research in this domain, and the synergistic potential between research on sleep loss and cognitive neuroscience., (© 2019 Elsevier B.V. A 70-year-old simmering debate has erupted into vigorous battles over the most effective ways to conduct research. Well-established beliefs are being forcefully challenged by advocates of new research models. While there can be no final resolution to this battle, this paper offers the Twin-Win Model to guide teams of researchers, academic leaders, business managers, and government funding policymakers. The Twin-Win Model favors a problem-oriented approach to research, which encourages formation of teams to pursue the dual goals of breakthrough theories in published papers and validated solutions that are ready for widespread dissemination. The raised expectations of simultaneously pursuing foundational discoveries and powerful innovations are a step beyond traditional approaches that advocate basic research first. The Teaching-Family Model was perhaps the first "evidence-based program" in human services. This article describes the development of the treatment model, the failure of the first attempts to replicate the treatment model, the discovery of larger units for replication, the modest success of first attempts to replicate larger units, and the eventual success of replications. The Teaching-Family Model is a testament to the sustainability (and continual improvement) of innovation and implementation methods and the value of the Teaching-Family Association for sustaining a community of practice and for managing the practitioner fidelity and organization fidelity data systems nationally. Applied research experiences can provide numerous benefits to undergraduate students, however few studies have assessed the perceptions of Exercise Science (EXS) students to an applied research experience. The purpose of this study was two-fold: 1) to describe the rationale and implementation of an applied research experience into an EXS curriculum and 2) to evaluate EXS undergraduate students' perceptions of an applied research experience. An EXS measurement course was chosen for implementation of an applied research experience. The applied research experience required groups of students to design, implement, and evaluate a student-led research project. Fourteen questions were constructed, tailored to EXS undergraduate students, to assess students' perceptions of the experience. Qualitative analysis was used for all applicable data, with repeated trends noted; quantitative data were collapsed to determine frequencies. There was an overall positive student perception of the experience and 85.7% of students agreed an applied research experience should be continued. 84.7% of students perceived the experience as educationally enriching, while 92.8% reported the experience was academically challenging. This experience allowed students to develop comprehensive solutions to problems that arose throughout the semester; while facilitating communication, collaboration, and problem solving. Students believed research experiences were beneficial, but could be time consuming when paired with other responsibilities. Results suggest an applied research experience has the potential to help further the development of EXS undergraduate students. Understanding student perceptions of an applied research experience may prove useful to faculty interested in engaging students in the research process.

In Europe, most of the cancer clinical research dedicated to therapeutic innovations aims primarily at regulatory approval. Once an anticancer drug enters the common market, each member state determines its real-world use based on its own criteria: pricing, reimbursement and clinical indications. Such an innovation-centred clinical research landscape might neglect patient-relevant issues in real-world setting, such as comparative effectiveness of distinct treatment options or long-term safety monitoring.
