We have applied 57 Fe nuclear resonance vibrational spectroscopy (NRVS) for the first time to study the dynamics of Fe centers in Fe-S protein crystals, including oxidized wild type rubredoxin crystals from Pyrococcus furiosus , and the MoFe protein of nitrogenase from Azotobacter vinelandii . Thanks to the NRVS selection rule, selectively probed vibrational modes have been observed in both oriented rubredoxin and MoFe protein crystals. The NRVS work was complemented by extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (EXAFS) measurements on oxidized wild type rubredoxin crystals from Pyrococcus furiosus . The EXAFS spectra revealed the Fe-S bond length difference in oxidized Pf Rd protein, which is qualitatively consistent with the X-ray crystal structure.

The thiolato complex [platinum(II) (bipyridine)(N,S-aminoethanethiolate)](+)Ch(-) (1) undergoes sequential reactions with singlet oxygen to initially form the corresponding sulfenato complex [platinum(II) (bipyridine)(N,S(═O)-aminoethansulfenate)](+) (2) followed by a much slower reaction to the corresponding sulfinato complex. In contrast with many platinum dithiolato complexes, 1 does not produce any singlet oxygen, but its rate constant for singlet oxygen removal (k(T)) is quite large (3.2 × 10(7) M(-1) s(-1)) and chemical reaction accounts for ca. 25% of the value of k(T). The behavior of 1 is strikingly different from that of the complex platinum(II) (bipyridine)(1,2-benzenditholate) (4). The latter complex reacts with (1)O(2) (either from an external sensitizer or via a self-sensitized pathway) to form a sulfinato complex. These two very different reactivity pathways imply different mechanistic pathways: The reaction of 1 with (1)O(2) must involve O-O bond cleavage and intermolecular oxygen atom transfer, while the reactive intermediate in complex 4 collapses intramolecularly to the sulfinato moiety.

The unusual uranium reaction system in which uranium(4+) and uranium(3+) hydrides interconvert by formal bimetallic reductive elimination and oxidative addition reactions, [(C(5)Me(5))(2)UH(2)](2) (1) ⇌ [(C(5)Me(5))(2)UH](2) (2) + H(2), was studied by employing multiconfigurational quantum chemical and density functional theory methods. 1 can act as a formal four-electron reductant, releasing H(2) gas as the byproduct of four H(2)/H(-) redox couples. The calculated structures for both reactants and products are in good agreement with the X-ray diffraction data on 2 and 1 and the neutron diffraction data on 1 obtained under H(2) pressure as part of this study. The interconversion of the uranium(4+) and uranium(3+) hydride species was calculated to be near thermoneutral (~-2 kcal/mol). Comparison with the unknown thorium analogue, [(C(5)Me(5))(2)ThH](2), shows that the thorium(4+) to thorium(3+) hydride interconversion reaction is endothermic by 26 kcal/mol., (© 2012 American Chemical Society)

Heteromultimetallic hydride clusters containing both rare-earth and d-transition metals are of interest in terms of both their structure and reactivity. However, such heterometallic complexes have not yet been investigated to a great extent because of difficulties in their synthesis and structural characterization. Here, we report the synthesis, X-ray and neutron diffraction studies, and hydrogen addition and release properties of a family of rare-earth/d-transition-metal heteromultimetallic polyhydride complexes of the core structure type 'Ln(4)MH(n)' (Ln = Y, Dy, Ho; M = Mo, W; n = 9, 11, 13). Monitoring of hydrogen addition to a hydride cluster such as [{(C(5)Me(4)SiMe(3))Y}(4)(μ-H)(9)Mo(C(5)Me(5))] in a single-crystal to single-crystal process by X-ray diffraction has been achieved for the first time. Density functional theory studies reveal that the hydrogen addition process is cooperatively assisted by the Y/Mo heteromultimetallic sites, thus offering unprecedented insight into the hydrogen addition and release process of a metal hydride cluster.

Arylphosphines and dialkylbiarylphosphines react with singlet oxygen to form phosphine oxides and phosphinate esters. For mixed arylphosphines, the most electron-rich aryl group migrates to form the phosphinate, while for dialkylbiarylphosphines migration of the alkyl group occurs. Dialkylbiarylphosphines also yield arene epoxides, especially in electron-rich systems. Phosphinate ester formation is increased at high temperature, while protic solvents increase the yield of epoxide. The product distribution provides evidence for Buchwald's recent conformational model for the aerobic oxidation of dialkylbiarylphosphines.

An intensely phosphorescent Pt complex in cyclohexane is efficiently quenched by exciplex formation with extremely weak Lewis bases such as toluene and other aromatic compounds.

Two chiral tetraphenylenes, 2,15-dideuteriotetraphenylene (7) and 2,7-dimethyltetraphenylene (15) were synthesized and resolved to address the tetraphenylene inversion barrier problem. Neutron diffraction investigation of enantiopure 7 showed that the molecule retained its chirality integrity during its synthesis from enantiopure precursors and therefore rules out the possibility of the tetraphenylene framework possessing a low-energy barrier to inversion. Thermal study on 15 and tetraphenylene 1 further revealed that their inversion barriers were not overcome up to 600 degrees C, at which temperature these compounds underwent skeletal contraction into triphenylene with activation energies of 62.8 and 58.2 kcal/mol, respectively. This result is supported by computational studies which yielded an inversion barrier of 135 kcal/mol for tetraphenylene as a consequence of the peri-hydrogen repulsions at its planar conformation.

Disintegrins are a family of small (4-14 kDa) proteins that bind to another class of proteins, integrins. Therefore, as integrin inhibitors, they can be exploited as anticancer and antiplatelet agents. Acostatin, an alphabeta heterodimeric disintegrin, has been isolated from the venom of Southern copperhead (Agkistrodon contortrix contortrix). The three-dimensional structure of acostatin has been determined by macromolecular crystallography using the molecular-replacement method. The asymmetric unit of the acostatin crystals consists of two heterodimers. The structure has been refined to an R(work) and R(free) of 18.6% and 21.5%, respectively, using all data in the 20-1.7 A resolution range. The structure of all subunits is similar and is well ordered into N-terminal and C-terminal clusters with four intramolecular disulfide bonds. The overall fold consists of short beta-sheets, each of which is formed by a pair of antiparallel beta-strands connected by beta-turns and flexible loops of different lengths. Conformational flexibility is found in the RGD loops and in the C-terminal segment. The interaction of two N-terminal clusters via two intermolecular disulfide bridges anchors the alphabeta chains of the acostatin dimers. The C-terminal clusters of the heterodimer project in opposite directions and form a larger angle between them in comparison with other dimeric disintegrins. Extensive interactions are observed between two heterodimers, revealing an alphabetabetaalpha acostatin tetramer. Further experiments are required to identify whether the alphabetabetaalpha acostatin complex plays a functional role in vivo.

A four-coordinate hydrogen atom has been unambiguously located, by single-crystal neutron diffraction for the first time, in the center of the tetrahedral metal complex Y4H8(Cp')4(THF) [Cp'=C5Me4(SiMe3)]. The core of the molecule consists of a tetranuclear cluster with one interstitial, one face-bridging, and six edge-bridging hydride ligands. The compound was prepared via the reaction of YCp'(CH2SiMe3)2(THF) with gaseous H2. Neutron data were collected on a 4 mm3 crystal at the Quasi-Laue diffractometer VIVALDI at ILL (Grenoble)1a and on an 8 mm3 crystal at the SXD diffractometer at ISIS (Didcot). The final agreement factor is R = 8.9% for 4171 reflections. The existence of 4-coordinate hydrogen now completes the series of high-connectivity hydride ligands located in the interstitial cavities of molecular cluster complexes. We had previously reported the existence of 6-coordinate hydrogen in the octahedral cavity of [HCo6(CO)15]- in 1979, and 5-coordinate hydrogen in the square pyramidal cavities of [H2Rh13(CO)24]3- in 1997, also via single-crystal neutron analyses.

Neutron diffraction provides an experimental method of directly locating H atoms in proteins, a technique complementary to ultra-high-resolution X-ray diffraction. Three different types of neutron diffractometers for biological macromolecules have been constructed in Japan, France and the USA, and they have been used to determine the crystal structures of proteins up to resolution limits of 1.5-2.5 A. Results relating to H-atom positions and hydration patterns in proteins have been obtained from these studies. Examples include the geometrical details of hydrogen bonds, the role of H atoms in enzymatic activity, CH3 configuration, H/D exchange in proteins and oligonucleotides, and the dynamical behavior of hydration structures, all of which have been extracted from these structural results and reviewed. Other techniques, such as the growth of large single crystals and a database of hydrogen and hydration in proteins, are described.

The electronic properties of the cyclometalated (CwedgeN) complexes of iridium and platinum metals with a catechol ligand have been studied experimentally and computationally. The synthesis and characterization of (p-tolylpyridine)Ir(3,5-di-tert-butylcatechol) (abbreviated Ir-sq) and (2,4-diflorophenylpyridine)Pt(3,5-di-tert-butylcatechol) (abbreviated Pt-sq) are reported along with their structural, spectral, and electrochemical properties. Reaction of the 3,5-di-tert-butylcatechol (DTBCat) ligand with the prepared cyclometalated metal complex was carried out in air in the presence of a base. The resulting complexes are air stable and are paramagnetic with the unpaired electron residing mainly on the catechol ligand. The bond lengths obtained from X-ray structure analysis and the theoretical results suggest the semiquinone form of the catechol ligand. Low-energy, intense (approximately 10(3) M-1 cm-1) transitions are observed in the visible to near-infrared region (600-700 nm) of the absorption spectra of the metal complexes. Electrochemically, the complexes exhibit a reversible reduction of the semiquinone form to the catechol form of the ligand and an irreversible oxidation to the unstable quinone form of the ligand. The noninnocent catechol ligand plays a significant role in the electronic properties of the metal complexes. Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations on the two open-shell molecules provide the ground-state and excited-state energies of the molecular orbitals involved in the observed low-energy transitions. The spin density in the two complexes resides mainly on the catechol ligand. The intense transition arises from excitation of the beta electron from a HOMO-n (n = 1 or 2 here) to the LUMO, rather than from the excitation of the unpaired alpha electron.

This paper deals with the preparation and structural investigation of asymmetric bis(silyl) niobocene hydrides, Cp2Nb(SiHMe2)(H)(SiXMe2) (2; X = F (a), Cl (b), Br (c), I (d)) and Cp2Nb(SiXMe2)(H)(SiYMe2) (X,Y= F-I; X not equal Y). Complexes 2a-d were prepared by selective electrophilic activation of the Si-H bond in Cp2Nb(SiHMe2)2(H). The Cp2Nb(SiXMe2)(H)(SiYMe2) complexes were prepared by electrophilic activation of the Si-H bond in 2a-d and, in some cases, by electrophilic exchange of the X halides in Cp2Nb(SiXMe2)2(H) (1) for other halides, Y. The structures of complexes 2b and 2c have been studied by X-ray and neutron diffraction (ND). The ND results unequivocally established that the hydride ligand in 2c is shifted toward the SiBrMe2 ligand and that in 2b is positioned symmetrically between two nonequivalent silyl groups, with the H...SiClMe2 distance being shorter because of the shorter Nb-SiClMe2 bond length. Analysis of the X-ray structures of complexes 2a-d and complexes Cp2Nb(SiXMe2)(H)(SiYMe2) shows that the largest structural distortions are observed for the silyl groups substituted by heavy halogen atoms. These trends are rationalized in terms of stronger interligand hypervalent interactions (IHI) Nb-H...Si-X for heavy atoms X from Group 7.

Singlet oxygen reacts with binaphthyl phosphine derivatives such as 1,1'-binaphthyl di-tert-butyl phosphine to form the corresponding binaphthyl-2-oxide phosphine oxides. This new intramolecular arene epoxidation reaction proceeds with complete retention of stereochemistry. The binaphthyl-2-oxide di-tert-butyl phosphine oxide undergoes a slow "NIH-rearrangement" to form the corresponding hydroxylated product. A transient phosphadioxirane intermediate has been directly observed by low-temperature NMR. Kinetic analyses show that all of the phosphadioxirane intermediate is converted to product. The crystal structure of NF4BF4 has been reexamined. The low-temperature X-ray structure and solid-state 19F MAS NMR spectra are in agreement with the conclusions reached from the vibrational spectra, that solid NF4+ salts contain only tetrahedral NF4+ cations. The alleged observation of two kind of nontetrahedral NF4+ cations in several previous crystal structures is attributed to incorrectly solved structures and, possibly, problems caused by disorder or twinning. It is further evidence for the dangers of over-reliance on crystal structures. Flawed crystal structures can give rise to either bad or unwarranted theory.

A series of cationic Ir(III) complexes with the general formula (C/N)2Ir(N/N)(+)PF6- featuring bis-cyclometalated 1-phenylpyrazolyl-N,C2' (C/N) and neutral diimine (N/N, e.g., 2,2'-bipyridyl) ligands were synthesized and their electrochemical, photophysical, and electroluminescent properties studied. Density functional theory calculations indicate that the highest occupied molecular orbital of the compounds is comprised of a mixture of Ir d and phenylpyrazolyl-based orbitals, while the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital has predominantly diimine character. The oxidation and reduction potentials of the complexes can be independently varied by systematic modification of either the C/N or N/N ligands with donor or acceptor substituents. The electrochemical redox gaps (E(ox)-E(red)) were adjusted to span a range between 2.39 and 3.08 V. All of the compounds have intense absorption bands in the UV region assigned to 1(pi-pi*) transitions and weaker charge-transfer (CT) transitions that extend to the visible region. The complexes display intense luminescence both in fluid solution and as neat solids at 298 K that is assigned to emission from a triplet metal-ligand-to-ligand CT (3MLLCT) excited state. The energy of the 3MLLCT state varies in nearly direct proportion to the size of the electrochemical redox gap, which leads to emission colors that vary from red to blue. Three of the (C/N)2Ir(N/N)(+)PF6- complexes were used as active materials in single-layer light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs). Single-layer electroluminescent devices were fabricated by spin-coating the Ir complexes onto an ITO-PEDOT/PSS substrate followed by deposition of aluminum contacts onto the organic film. Devices were prepared that give blue, green, and red electroluminescence spectra (lambda(max) = 492, 542, and 635 nm, respectively), which are nearly identical with the photoluminescence spectra of thin films of the same materials. The single-layer LECs give peak external quantum efficiencies of 4.7, 6.9, and 7.4% for the blue, green, and red emissive devices, respectively.

Two approaches are reported to achieve efficient blue to near-UV emission from triscyclometalated iridium(III) materials related to the previously reported complex, fac-Ir(ppz)(3) (ppz = 1-phenylpyrazolyl-N,C(2)'). The first involves replacement of the phenyl group of the ppz ligand with a 9,9-dimethyl-2-fluorenyl group, i.e., fac-tris(1-[(9,9-dimethyl-2-fluorenyl)]pyrazolyl-N,C(2)')iridium(III), abbreviated as fac-Ir(flz)(3). Crystallographic analysis reveals that both fac-Ir(flz)(3) and fac-Ir(ppz)(3) have a similar coordination environment around the Ir center. The absorption and emission spectra of fac-Ir(flz)(3) are red shifted from those of fac-Ir(ppz)(3). The fac-Ir(flz)(3) complex gives blue photoluminescence (PL) with a high efficiency (lambda(max) = 480 nm, phi(PL) = 0.38) at room temperature. The lifetime and quantum efficiency were used to determine the radiative and nonradiative rates (1.0 x 10(4) and 2.0 x 10(4) s(-1), respectively). The second approach utilizes N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands to form triscyclometalated Ir complexes. Complexes with two different NHC ligands, i.e., iridium tris(1-phenyl-3-methylimidazolin-2-ylidene-C,C(2)'), abbreviated as Ir(pmi)(3), and iridium tris(1-phenyl-3-methylbenzimidazolin-2-ylidene-C,C(2)'), abbreviated as Ir(pmb)(3), were both isolated as facial and meridianal isomers. Comparison of the crystallographic structures of the fac- and mer-isomers of Ir(pmb)(3) with the corresponding Ir(ppz)(3) isomers indicates that the imidazolyl-carbene ligand has a stronger trans influence than pyrazolyl and, thus, imparts a greater ligand field strength. Both fac-Ir(pmi)(3) and fac-Ir(pmb)(3) complexes display strong metal-to-ligand-charge-transfer absorption transitions in the UV (lambda = 270-350 nm) and phosphoresce in the near-UV region (E(0)(-)(0) = 380 nm) at room temperature with phi(PL) values of 0.02 and 0.04, respectively. The radiative decay rates for fac-Ir(pmi)(3) and fac-Ir(pmb)(3) (5 x 10(4) s(-1) and 18 x 10(4) s(-1), respectively) are somewhat higher than that of fac-Ir(flz)(3), but the nonradiative rates are two orders of magnitude faster (i.e., (2-4) x 10(6) s(-1)).

The complex Zr(9-BBN)4 [9-BBN = (mu-H)2BC8H14] has been synthesized via the reaction of K(9-BBN) with ZrCl4 in diethyl ether. The structure of the title compound has been determined by X-ray and neutron single-crystal diffraction techniques. Each 9-BBN ligand is coordinated to the Zr atom via two B-H-Zr bridges, and these metal-ligand bonding interactions are further augmented by three prominent C-H...Zr agostic interactions. Average molecular parameters derived from the neutron analysis: Zr-H = 2.051(8) A, B-H = 1.286(7) A, Zr...B = 2.409(6) A, Zr-H-B = 87.7(4) degrees , H-Zr-H = 58.9(3) degrees . The Zr...H distances corresponding to the three C-H...Zr agostic interactions are 2.424(7), 2.663(8), and 2.551(7) A. The fourth potential C-H...Zr interaction has a Zr...H distance [3.146(7) A] that is too long to be considered in the agostic range. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction data were collected on an Enraf-Nonius Kappa CCD diffraction system, and neutron diffraction data were collected on the quasi-Laue diffractometer VIVALDI at the Institut Laue-Langevin; the final agreement factor for the neutron analysis is 6.52% for 2557 reflections with I > 2sigma(I).

The synthesis and photophysical characterization of a series of (N,C(2')-(2-para-tolylpyridyl))2 Ir(LL') [(tpy)2 Ir(LL')] (LL' = 2,4-pentanedionato (acac), bis(pyrazolyl)borate ligands and their analogues, diphosphine chelates and tert-butylisocyanide (CN-t-Bu)) are reported. A smaller series of [(dfppy)2 Ir(LL')] (dfppy = N,C(2')-2-(4',6'-difluorophenyl)pyridyl) complexes were also examined along with two previously reported compounds, (ppy)2 Ir(CN)2- and (ppy)2 Ir(NCS)2- (ppy = N,C(2')-2-phenylpyridyl). The (tpy)2 Ir(PPh2CH2)2 BPh2 and [(tpy)2 Ir(CN-t-Bu)2](CF3SO3) complexes have been structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. The Ir-C(aryl) bond lengths in (tpy)2 Ir(CN-t-Bu)2+ (2.047(5) and 2.072(5) A) and (tpy)2 Ir(PPh2CH2)2 BPh2 (2.047(9) and 2.057(9) A) are longer than their counterparts in (tpy)2 Ir(acac) (1.982(6) and 1.985(7) A). Density functional theory calculations carried out on (ppy)2 Ir(CN-Me)2+ show that the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) consists of a mixture of phenyl-pi and Ir-d orbitals, while the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital is localized primarily on the pyridyl-pi orbitals. Electrochemical analysis of the (tpy)2 Ir(LL') complexes shows that the reduction potentials are largely unaffected by variation in the ancillary ligand, whereas the oxidation potentials vary over a much wider range (as much as 400 mV between two different LL' ligands). Spectroscopic analysis of the cyclometalated Ir complexes reveals that the lowest energy excited state (T1) is a triplet ligand-centered state (3LC) on the cyclometalating ligand admixed with 1MLCT (MLCT = metal-to-ligand charge-transfer) character. The different ancillary ligands alter the 1MLCT state energy mainly by changing the HOMO energy. Destabilization of the 1MLCT state results in less 1MLCT character mixed into the T1 state, which in turn leads to an increase in the emission energy. The increase in emission energy leads to a linear decrease in ln(k(nr)) (k(nr) = nonradiative decay rate). Decreased 1MLCT character in the T1 state also increases the Huang-Rhys factors in the emission spectra, decreases the extinction coefficient of the T1 transition, and consequently decreases the radiative decay rates (k(r)). Overall, the luminescence quantum yields decline with increasing emission energies. A linear dependence of the radiative decay rate (k(r)) or extinction coefficient (epsilon) on (1/deltaE)2 has been demonstrated, where deltaE is the energy difference between the 1MLCT and 3LC transitions. A value of 200 cm(-1) for the spin-orbital coupling matrix element 3LC absolute value(H(SO)) 1MLCT of the (tpy)2 Ir(LL') complexes can be deduced from this linear relationship. The (fppy)2 Ir(LL') complexes with corresponding ancillary ligands display similar trends in excited-state properties.

A new series of luminescent mu-pyrazolate-bridged cyclometalated platinum binuclear complexes having the formula CwedgeNPt(mu-pz')2PtCwedgeN (CwedgeN = 2-(2,4-difluorophenyl)pyridyl, pz' = pyrazolate for 1, 3,5-dimethylpyrazolate for 2, 3-methyl-5-tert-butylpyrazolate for 3, and 3,5-bis(tert-butyl)pyrazolate for 4) have been synthesized and characterized. The two Pt(CwedgeN) moieties are bridged by two mu-pyrazolate ligands in an exo-bidentate fashion. A mononuclear complex with an isolated Pt center, CwedgeNPt(pz)2BEt2, 5, is also described. The X-ray crystal structures of 1-4 show the following Pt-Pt spacings: 1 = 3.3763(7) A, 2 = 3.1914(9) A, 3 = 3.0457(7) A, and 4 = 2.8343(6) A. At 77 K, the emission energy of the complexes varies from blue (for 1, 2, and 5) to green (for 3) to red (for 4). The changes in the photophysical properties of the binuclear complexes can be correlated with the decreasing Pt-Pt distance; the emissive state changes from a mixed ligand center triplet/metal-to-ligand charge transfer excited state (for 1 and 2) to a lower-energy, Pt-Pt metal-metal-to-ligand charge transfer state (for 3 and 4).

The structure of a partially deuterated rubredoxin from the hyperthermophilic archaeon Pyrococcus furiosus, an organism that grows optimally at 100 degrees C, was determined by using the neutron single-crystal diffractometer dedicated for biological macromolecules (BIX-3) at the JRR-3M reactor of the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute. Data were collected at room temperature up to a resolution of 1.5 A, and the completeness factor of the data set was 81.9%. The model contains 306 H and 50 D atoms. A total of 37 hydration water molecules were identified, with 15 having all three atoms fully located and the remaining D2O molecules partially defined. The model has been refined to final agreement factors of R = 18.6% and Rfree = 21.7%. Several orientations of the O-D bonds of side chains, whose assignments from x-ray data were previously ambiguous, were clearly visible in the neutron structure. Although most backbone N-H bonds had undergone some degree of H/D exchange throughout the rubredoxin molecule, 5 H atom positions still had distinctly negative (H) peaks. The neutron Fourier maps clearly showed the details of an extensive set of H bonds involving the ND3+ terminus that may contribute to the unusual thermostability of this molecule.

A neutron diffraction study has been carried out at 1.6 A resolution on a mutant rubredoxin from Pyrococcus furiosus using the BIX-3 single-crystal diffractometer at the JRR-3 reactor of the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute. In order to study the unusual thermostability of rubredoxin from P. furiosus (an organism that grows optimally at 373 K), the hydrogen-bonding patterns were compared between the wild-type protein and a 'triple-mutant' variant. In this mutant protein, three residues were changed (Trp3-->Tyr3, Ile23-->Val23, Leu32-->Ile32) so that they are identical to those in a mesophilic rubredoxin from Clostridium pasteurianum. In the present study, some minor changes were found between the wild-type and mutant proteins in the hydrogen-bonding patterns of the Trp3/Tyr3 region. In this investigation, the H/D-exchange ratios in the protein were also studied. Because the target protein was soaked in D2O during the crystallization procedure, most of the N-H and O-H bonds have become deuterated, while essentially all of the C-H bonds have not. In particular, the H/D-exchange pattern of the N-H amide bonds of the protein backbone is of interest because it may contain some indirect information about the mechanism of unfolding of this small protein. The results are in broad agreement with those from solution NMR studies, which suggest that the backbone amide bonds near the four Cys residues of the FeS4 redox center are most resistant to H/D exchange. Finally, the detailed geometries of the water molecules of hydration around the rubredoxin molecule are also reported. The 1.6 A resolution of the present neutron structure determination has revealed a more detailed picture than previously available of some portions of the water structure, including ordered and disordered O-D bonds. Crystallographic details: space group P2(1)2(1)2(1) (orthorhombic), unit-cell parameters a = 34.48, b = 35.70, c = 43.16 A; final agreement factors R = 0.196 and Rfree = 0.230 for 19,384 observed and 6548 unique neutron reflections collected at room temperature; crystal size 4 mm3; a total of 423 non-H atoms, 290 H atoms and 88 D atoms were located in this study.

The use of metal complexes fac-tris(1-phenylpyrazolato-N,C(2)('))cobalt(III) [fac-Co(ppz)(3)], fac-tris(2-phenylpyridinato-N,C(2)(') cobalt(III) [fac-Co(ppy)(3)], and [tris[2-((pyrrole-2-ylmethylidene)amino)ethyl]amine]gallium(III) [Ga(pma)] as materials for hole-transporting layers (HTL) in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) is reported. Co(ppz)(3) and Co(ppy)(3) were prepared by following literature procedures and isolated as mixtures of facial (fac) and meridional (mer) isomers. The more stable fac isomers were separated from the unstable mer forms via column chromatography and thermal gradient sublimation. Crystals of fac-Co(ppz)(3) are monoclinic, space group P2(1)/c, with a = 13.6121(12) A, b = 15.5600(12) A, c = 22.9603(17) A, beta = 100.5 degrees, V = 4781.3(7) A(3), and Z = 8. [Tris[2-((pyrrol-2-ylmethylidene)amino)ethyl]amine]gallium [Ga(pma)] was prepared by the reaction of gallium(III) nitrate with the pmaH(3) ligand precursor in methanol. Ga(pma) crystallizes in the cubic space group I3d with cell parameters a = 20.2377(4) A, b = 20.2377(4) A, c = 20.2377(4) A, beta = 90.0 degrees, V = 8288.6(3) A(3), and Z = 16. These cobalt and gallium complexes are pale colored to colorless solids, with optical energy gaps ranging 2.6-3.36 eV. A two-layer HTL/ETL (ETL = electron-transporting layer) device structure using fac-Co(ppz)(3) and fac-Co(ppy)(3) as the HTL does not give efficient electroluminescence. However, the introduction of a thin layer of a hole-transporting material (N,N'-bis(1-naphthyl)-N,N'-diphenylbenzidine, NPD) as an energy "stair-step" and electron/exciton-blocker dramatically improves the device performance. Both fac-Co(ppz)(3) and fac-Co(ppy)(3) devices give external quantum efficiencies higher than 1.0%, with brightness 5000 and 7000 Cd/m(2) at 10 V, respectively. Ga(pma) also functions as an efficient interface layer, giving device performances very similar to those of analogous devices using NPD as the interface layer. Stability tests have been carried out for Co(ppz)(3)/NPD/Alq(3) and Co(ppy)(3)/NPD/Alq(3) devices. While fac-Co(ppy)(3) gave stable OLEDs, the fac-Co(ppz)(3)-based devices had very short lifetimes. On the basis of the experimental results of chemical oxidation of fac-Co(ppz)(3), the major cause for the fast decay of the fac-Co(ppz)(3) device is proposed to be the decomposition of fac-Co(ppz)(3)(+) in the HTL layer during the device operation.

A single-crystal neutron diffraction analysis of the cluster complex [H(4)Co(4)(C(5)Me(4)Et)(4)] was carried out on the new quasi-Laue diffractometer VIVALDI at the Institut Laue-Langevin. The structure consists of four face-bridging hydrides attached to a tetrahedral cobalt metal core. Average distances and angles in the core of the molecule are as follows: Co-Co = 2.571(8), Co-C = 2.158(6), Co-H = 1.749(7), H.H = 2.366(9) A; Co-H-Co = 94.6(3), H-Co-H = 85.1(3) degrees. The hydride ligands are located off the Co-Co-Co planes by an average distance of 0.923(8) A. It is suggested that the dimensions of the HCo(3) fragments found in this molecule provide reasonable estimates for analogous distances and angles associated with chemisorbed H atoms situated on the 3-fold hollows of a cobalt surface. Crystallographic details: space group P2(1)/a (monoclinic); a = 21.979(2), b = 10.924(1), c = 34.406(2) A; beta = 90.81(1) degrees; Z = 8. Final agreement factor: R(F) = 0.099 for 3779 reflections [I > 2sigma(I)] collected at 20 K.

Rubredoxin from the hyperthermophilic archaeon Pyrococcus furiosus maintains its native structure at high temperatures (373 K). In order to investigate the role of hydrogen bonding, hydration and chain dynamics in this thermostability, wavelength-resolved Laue neutron diffraction data have been collected from the W3Y single mutant (Trp3-->Tyr3) on the spallation neutron protein crystallography station (PCS) at Los Alamos Neutron Science Center. Data were measured at room temperature from nine crystal settings, each of approximately 12 h duration. The total data-measurement period was less than 5 d from a single crystal that had undergone H(2)O/D(2)O exchange. The nominal resolution of the data is 2.1 A.

Single-crystal neutron diffraction data up to a resolution of 1.5 A have been collected at room temperature on two forms of rubredoxin using the BIX-3 diffractometer at the JRR-3 reactor of the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI). Rubredoxin is a small iron-sulfur redox protein with 53 amino acid residues, and the source of this particular protein is the hyperthermophile Pyrococcus furiosus, a microorganism that normally lives at temperatures near that of boiling water. Data were collected on crystals of the wild-type protein and on a mutant in which three of the residues have been replaced. In this paper we will be describing several sets of results arising from these high-resolution neutron structure determinations: (a) the H/D exchange pattern of the N-H bonds of the main backbone, which give information about which regions of the molecule are more exposed to solvent; (b) the orientations of some of the O-D bonds in the protein, information which is often not obtainable from X-ray results; (c) the structure and appearance of water molecules in the protein crystals; and (d) some structural features which may help rationalize the remarkable thermal stability of the wild-type protein from this intriguing microorganism

The synthesis of a water-soluble anionic silver 2-mercaptonicotinate complex having effective antibacterial and antifungal properties is described. Its structure has been confirmed to be a hexameric cluster by an X-ray diffraction analysis of a mixed Na(+)/Tris(+) salt (Tris(+) = tris(hydroxymethyl)methylammonium cation). The [Ag(mna)](6)(6-) cluster has a Ag(6)S(6) core and an overall shape of twisted hexagonal cylinder with six sulfur atoms and six silver atoms alternating on a puckered drum-like surface. Each Ag atom is trigonally coordinated by one N and two S ligands. The overall [Ag(mna)](6)(6-).4Na(+).2[(HOCH(2))(3)CNH(3)](+).10H(2)O complex has a layered appearance in the crystal packing diagram, with a [Ag(mna)](6)(-) cluster layer alternating with a solvent layer consisting of sodium atoms, Tris buffer cations, and water molecules. The structure is almost identical to that of a neutral [Ag(Hmna)](6) complex reported earlier. The neutral and charged complexes are both known to possess antimicrobial activities, and some biological properties of these and related compounds are briefly discussed in this paper.

The synthesis, structures, electrochemistry, and photophysics of a series of facial (fac) and meridional (mer) tris-cyclometalated Ir(III) complexes are reported. The complexes have the general formula Ir(C'N)(3) [where C'N is a monoanionic cyclometalating ligand; 2-phenylpyridyl (ppy), 2-(p-tolyl)pyridyl (tpy), 2-(4,6-difluorophenyl)pyridyl (46dfppy), 1-phenylpyrazolyl (ppz), 1-(4,6-difluorophenyl)pyrazolyl (46dfppz), or 1-(4-trifluoromethylphenyl)pyrazolyl (tfmppz)]. Reaction of the dichloro-bridged dimers [(C'N(2)Ir(mu-Cl)(2)Ir(C'N)(2)] with 2 equiv of HC( wedge )N at 140-150 degrees C forms the corresponding meridional isomer, while higher reaction temperatures give predominantly the facial isomer. Both facial and meridional isomers can be obtained in good yield (>70%). The meridional isomer of Ir(tpy)(3) and facial and meridional isomers of Ir(ppz)(3) and Ir(tfmppz)(3) have been structurally characterized using X-ray crystallography. The facial isomers have near identical bond lengths (av Ir-C = 2.018 A, av Ir-N = 2.123 A) and angles. The three meridional isomers have the expected bond length alternations for the differing trans influences of phenyl and pyridyl/pyrazolyl ligands. Bonds that are trans to phenyl groups are longer (Ir-C av = 2.071 A, Ir-N av = 2.031 A) than when they are trans to heterocyclic groups. The Ir-C and Ir-N bonds with trans N and C, respectively, have bond lengths very similar to those observed for the corresponding facial isomers. DFT calculations of both the singlet (ground) and the triplet states of the compounds suggest that the HOMO levels are a mixture of Ir and ligand orbitals, while the LUMO is predominantly ligand-based. All of the complexes show reversible oxidation between 0.3 and 0.8 V, versus Fc/Fc(+). The meridional isomers are easier to oxidize by ca. 50-100 mV. The phenylpyridyl-based complexes have reduction potentials between -2.5 and -2.8 V, whereas the phenylpyrazolyl-based complexes exhibit no reduction up to the solvent limit of -3.0 V. All of the compounds have intense absorption bands in the UV region assigned into (1)(pi --> pi) transitions and weaker MLCT (metal-to-ligand charge transfer) transitions that extend to the visible region. The MLCT transitions of the pyrazolyl-based complexes are hypsochromically shifted relative to those of the pyridyl-based compounds. The phenylpyridyl-based Ir(III) tris-cyclometalates exhibit intense emission both at room temperature and at 77 K, whereas the phenylpyrazolyl-based derivatives emit strongly only at 77 K. The emission energies and lifetimes of the phenylpyridyl-based complexes (450-550 nm, 2-6 micros) and phenylpyrazolyl-based compounds (390-440 nm, 14-33 micros) are characteristic for a mixed ligand-centered/MLCT excited state. The meridional isomers for both pyridyl and pyrazolyl-based cyclometalates show markedly different spectroscopic properties than do the facial forms. Isolated samples of mer-Ir(C( wedge )N)(3) complexes can be thermally and photochemically converted to facial forms, indicating that the meridional isomers are kinetically favored products. The lower thermodynamic stabilities of the meridional isomers are likely related to structural features of these complexes; that is, the meridional configuration places strongly trans influencing phenyl groups opposite each other, whereas all three phenyl groups are opposite pyridyl or pyrazolyl groups in the facial complexes. The strong trans influence of the phenyl groups in the meridional isomers leads to the observation that they are easier to oxidize, exhibit broad, red-shifted emission, and have lower quantum efficiencies than their facial counterparts.

CpMo(NO)(CH(2)CMe(3))(2) (1), a complex with alpha-agostic C-H.Mo interactions, evolves neopentane in neat hydrocarbon solutions at room temperature and forms the transient 16-electron alkylidene complex, CpMo(NO)(=CHCMe(3)), which subsequently activates solvent C-H bonds. Thus, it reacts with tetramethylsilane or mesitylene to form CpMo(NO)(CH(2)CMe(3))(CH(2)SiMe(3)) (2) or CpMo(NO)(CH(2)CMe(3))(eta(2)-CH(2)C(6)H(3)-3,5-Me(2)) (3), respectively, in nearly quantitative yields. Under identical conditions, 1 in p-xylene generates a mixture of sp(2) and sp(3) C-H bond activation products, namely CpMo(NO)(CH(2)CMe(3))(C(6)H(3)-2,5-Me(2)) (4, 73%) and CpMo(NO)(CH(2)CMe(3))(eta(2)-CH(2)C(6)H(4)-4-Me) (5, 27%). In benzene at room temperature, 1 transforms to a mixture of CpMo(NO)(CH(2)CMe(3))(C(6)H(5)) (6) and CpMo(NO)(C(6)H(5))(2) (7) in a sequential manner. Most interestingly, the thermal activation of 6 at ambient temperatures gives rise to two parallel modes of reactivity involving either the elimination of benzene and formation of CpMo(NO)(=CHCMe(3)) or the elimination of neopentane and formation of the benzyne complex, CpMo(NO)(eta(2)-C(6)H(4)). In pyridine, these intermediates are trapped as the isolable 18-electron adducts, CpMo(NO)(=CHCMe(3))(NC(5)H(5)) (8) and CpMo(NO)(eta(2)-C(6)H(4))(NC(5)H(5)) (9), and, in hydrocarbon solvents, they effect the intermolecular activation of aliphatic C-H bonds at room temperature to generate mixtures of neopentyl- and phenyl-containing derivatives. However, the distribution of products resulting from the hydrocarbon activations is dependent on the nature of the solvent, probably due to solvation effects and the presence of sigma- or pi-hydrocarbon complexes on the reaction coordinates of the alkylidene and the benzyne intermediates. The results of DFT calculations on these processes in the gas phase support the existence of such hydrocarbon complexes and indicate that better agreement with experimental observations is obtained when the actual neopentyl ligand rather than the simpler methyl ligand is used in the model complexes.

The recently proposed (SO2)2N3- anion was structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction of the [Cs][(SO2)2N3] salt (P2(1)/c, a = 8.945(2) A, b = 10.454(2) A, c = 8.152(2) A, beta = 109.166(3) degrees, Z = 4, and R1 = 0.0329 at 130 K). In the (SO2)2N3- anion, both SO2 ligands are coordinated to one terminal nitrogen atom of the N3- anion.

Disintegrins are cysteine-rich RGD-containing peptides that block tumor-cell implantation and angiogenesis. Contortrostatin, a homodimeric disintegrin (64 residues in each chain) from southern copperhead snake venom, has been purified to homogeneity and crystallized. Initial attempts at crystallization led to a form grown from polyethylene glycol (PEG), which crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group C222(1), with unit-cell parameters a = 57.39, b = 139.55, c = 78.98 A, and diffracts to a resolution limit of 3.2 A. Very recently, a new crystalline form of the title protein has been obtained grown from ammonium sulfate [(NH(4))(2)SO(4)] as a precipitant having a space group of P2(1)2(1)2(1), with unit-cell parameters a = 37.52, b = 59.93, c = 121.37 A. These improved crystals diffract to a resolution limit of 1.7 A.

The synthesis, electrochemistry, and photophysics of a series of square planar Pt(II) complexes are reported. The complexes have the general structure C(wedge)NPt(O(wedge)O),where C(wedge)N is a monoanionic cyclometalating ligand (e.g., 2-phenylpyridyl, 2-(2'-thienyl)pyridyl, 2-(4,6-difluorophenyl)pyridyl, etc.) and O(wedge)O is a beta-diketonato ligand. Reaction of K(2)PtCl(4) with a HC(wedge)N ligand precursor forms the chloride-bridged dimer, C(wedge)NPt(mu-Cl)(2)PtC(wedge)N, which is cleaved with beta-diketones such as acetyl acetone (acacH) and dipivaloylmethane (dpmH) to give the corresponding monomeric C(wedge)NPt(O(wedge)O) complex. The thpyPt(dpm) (thpy = 2-(2'-thienyl)pyridyl) complex has been characterized using X-ray crystallography. The bond lengths and angles for this complex are similar to those of related cyclometalated Pt complexes. There are two independent molecular dimers in the asymmetric unit, with intermolecular spacings of 3.45 and 3.56 A, consistent with moderate pi-pi interactions and no evident Pt-Pt interactions. Most of the C(wedge)NPt(O(wedge)O) complexes display a single reversible reduction wave between -1.9 and -2.6 V (vs Cp(2)Fe/Cp(2)Fe(+)), assigned to largely C(wedge)N ligand based reduction, and an irreversible oxidation, assigned to predominantly Pt based oxidation. DFT calculations were carried out on both the ground (singlet) and excited (triplet) states of these complexes. The HOMO levels are a mixture of Pt and ligand orbitals, while the LUMO is predominantly C(wedge)N ligand based. The emission characteristics of these complexes are governed by the nature of the organometallic cyclometalating ligand allowing the emission to be tuned throughout the visible spectrum. Twenty-three different C(wedge)N ligands have been examined, which gave emission lambda(max) values ranging from 456 to 600 nm. Well-resolved vibronic fine structure is observed in all of the emission spectra (room temperature and 77 K). Strong spin-orbit coupling of the platinum atom allows for the formally forbidden mixing of the (1)MLCT with the (3)MCLT and (3)pi-pi states. This mixing leads to high emission quantum efficiencies (0.02-0.25) and lifetimes on the order of microseconds for the platinum complexes.

Singlet oxygen reacts with Ir(I) and Rh(I) thiolato complexes to form the corresponding Ir(III) and Rh(III) peroxo thiolato complexes which do not undergo intramolecular oxidation of the thiolate moiety.

Ninhydrin ( 1 ) reacts with aromatic compounds in acid solution to give condensation products. In H 2 SO 4 , 1 reacts with arenes to give 2,2-diaryl-1,3-indanediones ( 2a - f ). In superacidic triflic acid (CF 3 SO 3 H, TfOH), 1 reacts with arenes to give 3-(diarylmethylene)isobenzofuranones ( 3a - e ). Products 3a - e are proposed to have formed by a condensation and rearrangement involving dicationic intermediates. Benzo[ f ]ninhydrin also reacts with C 6 H 6 in H 2 SO 4 to give a similar condensation product.

Weak agostic Nd⋅⋅⋅H interactions and Nd-C bonds are involved in the bonding of the bridging methyl groups in the title compound (see sketch on the right): Two of the three H atoms of the methyl group are directed at the Nd center. The C atoms have distorted trigonal-bipyramidal geometry with the Nd atom and one of the H atoms (H A ) as axial ligands, and the Al atom and the other two H atoms (H B and H C ) in equatorial positions. The binding sites of Zn(2+), Cd(2+), and Hg(2+) in complexes with 2-(alpha-hydroxybenzyl)thiamine monophosphate chloride, (LH)(+)Cl(-), have been investigated in the solid state [2-(alpha-hydroxybenzyl)thiamin monophosphate chloride monoprotonated at the phosphate group and protonated at N(1)' is denoted as (LH)(+)Cl(-); therefore, the ligand monoprotonated at the phosphate group and deprotonated at N(1)' is L]. Complexes of formulae MLCl(2), M(LH)Cl(3), and (MCl(4))(2)(-)(LH)(2)(+) (M = Zn(2+), Cd(2+), and Hg(2+)) were isolated in aqueous and methanolic solutions, depending on pH. The crystal structure of the complex of formula HgL(2)Cl(2) was solved, together with that of the free ligand (LH)(+)Cl(-), by X-ray crystallography. HgL(2)Cl(2) crystallizes in C2/c, with a = 32.968(6) Å, b = 7.477(2) Å, c = 21.471(4) Å, beta = 118.19(1) degrees, V = 4665(2) Å(3), and Z = 4. (LH)(+)Cl(-) crystallizes in Cc, with a = 10.951(3) Å, b = 17.579(4) Å, c = 13.373(3) Å, beta = 105.36(2) degrees, V = 2482.4(10) Å(3), and Z = 4. Mercury(II) binds to the N(1') of the pyrimidine ring. Both ligands are in the S conformation [Phi(T) = -98.1(9) degrees and Phi(P) = 176.1(10) degrees for HgL(2)Cl(2) and Phi(T) = 104.1(5) degrees and Phi(P) = 171.9(6) degrees for (LH)(+)Cl(-)]. (31)P and (13)C NMR spectra, together with vibrational spectra (IR/Raman), are used to deduce the binding sites of the metal and the protonation states of the ligand at various pH values. It is found that solid-state (31)P NMR spectroscopy is particularly useful in characterizing these complexes as the (31)P shielding tensors are sensitive to the state of the phosphate group. On the other hand, the (31)P NMR spectra indicate that direct bonding between Zn(2+) and Cd(2+) to the phosphate can occur under certain preparation conditions. Solid-state (13)C NMR and vibrational (IR/Raman) spectroscopic results are also in agreement with the other techniques.
