In this study, copper oxide (CuO) was prepared by the microwave-assisted hydrothermal technique subsequently, CuO was grown in situ onto different rare metal compounds to prepare Z-scheme heterojunctions to improve the degradation efficiency of tetracycline (TC) in water environments. Various characterization proved the successful synthesis of all composite materials, and the formation of tight heterojunction interfaces, among which, the core-shell structure ZnIn 2 S 4 @CuO exhibited excellent photocatalytic degradation capability. Research results indicated that the degradation efficiency of ZnIn 2 S 4 @CuO for TC (50 mg/L) in the water environment reached 95.8 %, and the degradation rate is 2.41 times and 12.93 times that of CuO and ZnIn 2 S 4 alone, respectively, the reason is because of the introduction of ZnIn 2 S 4 , Z-scheme heterojunction structures and internal electric field (IEF) is constructed and formed to extend the visible light response range of photocatalysts to improve electron-hole separation efficiency, and enhance charge transfer. In addition, ZnIn 2 S 4 @CuO-2 exhibited good stability and reproducibility, with no significant loss of activity after five cycles. Finally, the precise locations of free radical attack on TC were investigated by the combined use of high-resolution mass spectrometry (HR-MC) and frontier electron densities (FEDs), and a reasonable degradation pathway was provided. Soil dissolved organic matter (DOM) is crucial to atmospheric, terrestrial and aquatic environments as well as human life. Here, by characterizing DOM from 89 grassland soils throughout China, we reveal the spatial association between DOM geochemistry in the dry season vs annual ecosystem exchange and cancer cases. The humic-like and high molecular weight (3.4-25 kDa) fractions with lower biodegradability, decline from the northern to the southern regions of China, and are correlated with lower soil respiration and net ecosystem productivity at the continental scale. The <1.2 kDa and proteinaceous fractions could serve as a geographical indicator of nasopharyngeal cancer incidence and mortality, while the 3.4-25 kDa and humified fractions are potentially associated with pancreatic cancer cases (P < 0.05). Our findings highlight that exploiting the environmental functions of soil DOM and mitigating the negative impacts are necessary, and require actions tailored to local soil DOM conditions., (© 2024. Neuroinflammation has been proven to drive cognitive impairment associated with neurodegenerative diseases. It has been demonstrated that mitochondrial dysfunction is associated with cognitive impairment caused by neuroinflammation. We hypothesized that the transfer of exogenous mitochondria may be beneficial to the therapy of cognitive impairment induced by neuroinflammation. In the study, the effect of exogenous mitochondria on cognitive impairment induced by neuroinflammation was investigated. The results showed that mitochondrial treatment ameliorated the cognitive performance of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-treated mice. Additionally, mitochondrial therapy attenuated neuronal injury and down-regulated the expression of proinflammatory cytokines, including TNF-α and pro- and cleaved IL-1β, and the expression of Iba-1 and GFAP in the hippocampus and cortex of LPS-treated mice. Additionally, mitochondrial treatment increased mitochondrial ΔΨm, ATP level, and SOD activity and attenuated MDA level and ROS production in the brains of LPS-treated mice. The study reports the beneficial effect of mitochondrial treatment against cognitive impairment of LPS-treated mice, thereby providing a potential strategy for the treatment of cognitive impairment caused by neuroinflammation., (© 2024. Tumorous bone defects present significant challenges for surgical bio-reconstruction due to the dual pathological conditions of residual tumor presence and extensive bone loss following excision surgery. To address this challenge, a "thermal switch" smart bone scaffold based on the silicene nanosheet-modified decalcified bone matrix (SNS@DBM) is developed by leveraging the natural affinity between collagen and silicene, which is elucidated by molecular dynamics simulations. Benefitting from its exceptional photothermal ability, biodegradability, and bioactivity, the SNS@DBM "thermal switch" provides an integrated postoperative sequential thermotherapy for tumorous bone loss by exerting three levels of photothermal stimulation (i.e., strong, moderate, and nonstimulation). During the different phases of postoperative bioconstruction, the SNS@DBM scaffold realizes simultaneous residual tumor ablation, tumor recurrence prevention, and bone tissue regeneration. These biological effects are verified in the tumor-bearing nude mice of patient-derived tissue xenografts and critical cranium defect rats. Mechanism research prompts moderate heat stimulus generated by and coordinating with SNSs can upregulate osteogenic genes, promote macrophages M2 polarization, and intensify angiogenesis of H-type vessels. Tissue engineering for penile corpora cavernosa defects requires microvascular system reconstruction.GelMA hydrogels show promise for tissue regeneration. However, using stem cells faces challenges such as immune rejection, limited proliferation and differentiation, and biosafety concerns. Therefore, acellular tissue regeneration may avoid these issues. Exosomes are used from muscle-derived stem cells (MDSCs) to modify 3D-printed hydrogel scaffolds for acellular tissue regeneration. Hypoxia-preconditioned MDSC-derived exosomes are obtained to enhance the therapeutic effect. In contrast to normoxic exosomes (N-Exos), hypoxic exosomes (H-Exos) are found to markedly enhance the proliferation, migration, and capillary-like tube formation of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). High-throughput sequencing analysis of miRNAs isolated from both N-Exos and H-Exos revealed a significant upregulation of miR-21-5p in H-Exos following hypoxic preconditioning. Further validation demonstrated that the miR-21-5p/PDCD4 pathway promoted the proliferation of HUVECs. Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is introduced to improve the mechanical properties and biocompatibility of GelMA hydrogels. EGCG-GelMA scaffolds loaded with different types of Exos are transplanted to repair rabbit penile corpora cavernosa defects, observed the blood flow and repair status of the defect site through color Doppler ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging, and ultimately restored the rabbit penile erection function and successfully bred offspring. Significant progress has been made previously in the research and development of graphene oxide (GO) membranes for water purification, but their biofouling behavior remains poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the biofilm formation and biofouling of GO membranes with different surface microstructures in the context of filtering natural surface water and for an extended operation period (110 days). The results showed that the relatively hydrophilic and smooth Fe(OH) 3 /GO membrane shaped a thin and spatially heterogeneous biofilm with high stable flux. However, the ability to simultaneously mitigate biofilm formation and reduce biofouling was not observed in the weakly hydrophilic and wrinkled Fe/GO and H-Fe(OH) 3 /GO membranes. Microbial analyses revealed that the hydrophilicity and roughness distinguished the bacterial communities and metabolic functions. The organic matter-degrading and predatory bacteria were more adapted to hydrophilic and smooth GO surfaces. These functional taxa were involved in the degradation of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), and improved biofilm heterogeneity. In contrast, the weakly hydrophilic and wrinkled GO surfaces had reduced biodiversity, while unexpectedly boosting the proliferation of EPS-secreting bacteria, resulting in increased biofilm formation and aggravated biofouling. Moreover, all GO membranes achieved sustainable water purification during the entire operating period.

Mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase 1 (MAPK kinase 1, MEK1) is a key kinase in the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathway. MEK1 mutations have been reported to lead to abnormal activation that is closely related to the malignant growth and spread of various tumors, making it an important target for cancer treatment. Targeting MEK1, four small-molecular drugs have been approved by the FDA, including Trametinib, Cobimetinib, Binimetinib, and Selumetinib. Recently, a study showed that modification with dehydroalanine (Dha) can also lead to abnormal activation of MEK1, which has the potential to promote tumor development. In this study, we used molecular dynamics simulations and metadynamics to explore the mechanism of abnormal activation of MEK1 caused by the Dha modification and predicted the inhibitory effects of four FDA-approved MEK1 inhibitors on the Dha-modified MEK1. The results showed that the mechanism of abnormal activation of MEK1 caused by the Dha modification is due to the movement of the active segment, which opens the active pocket and exposes the catalytic site, leading to sustained abnormal activation of MEK1. Among four FDA-approved inhibitors, only Selumetinib clearly blocks the active site by changing the secondary structure of the active segment from α-helix to disordered loop. Our study will help to explain the mechanism of abnormal activation of MEK1 caused by the Dha modification and provide clues for the development of corresponding inhibitors.

Background: The precise association between lncRNA H19 and ferroptosis in the context of atherosclerosis remains uncertain., Objective: This study is to clarify the underlying process and propose novel approaches for the advancement of therapeutic interventions targeting atherosclerosis., Methods: Assessment of ferroptosis, which entails the evaluation of cell viability using CCK-8 and the quantification of intracellular MDA, GSH, and ferrous ions. Simultaneously, the protein expression levels of assessed by western blot analysis, while the expression level of lncRNA H19 was also determined. Furthermore, HAECs that were cultured with ox-LDL were subjected to Fer-1 interference. HAECs were exposed to ox-LDL and then transfected with H19 shRNA and H19 overexpression vector pcDNA3.1. The level of ferroptosis in the cells was then measured. Then, HAECs were subjected to incubation with ox-LDL, followed by transfection with H19 shRNA and treated with Erastin to assess the levels of ferroptosis, cell viability, and inflammatory factor production. and the ability for blood vessel development., Results: The survival rate of HAECs in the ox-LDL group was much lower. Ox-LDL resulted in an upregulation of ACSL4 expression in HAECs, while the expression of SLC7A11 and GPX4 decreased., Conclusions: lncRNA H19 enhances ferroptosis and exacerbates arterial endothelial cell damage induced by LDL.

The development of high-temperature nondestructive testing (NDT) requires ultrasonic transducers with good temperature resistance and high sensitivity for improved detection efficiency. Piezoelectric composite can improve the performance of transducers because of its high electromechanical coupling coefficient and adjustable acoustic impedance. In this study, 1-3-2 composites and 1-3-2 high-temperature composite ultrasonic transducers (HTCUTs) based on 0.36BiScO3-0.64PbTiO3 (BSPT), which is preferred piezoelectric materials at 200 ° C- 300 ° C, and high-temperature epoxy with a center frequency of 6 MHz were designed and fabricated. From 25 ° C to 250 ° C, 1-3-2 composites show a higher electromechanical coupling coefficient k t especially at high temperatures (~0.53 at 25 ° C and ~0.64 at 250 ° C) than monolithic BSPT (~0.5). The signal of the pulse-echo response of 1-3-2 HTCUTs is distinguishable up to 250 ° C and remains stable ( [Formula: see text] mV) below 150 ° C, exhibiting higher sensitivity (improved by 7 dB) than that of monolithic BSPT high-temperature ultrasonic transducers (HTUTs). Bandwidth has been greatly enhanced especially at high temperatures (~103% at 250 ° C) compared with that of monolithic BSPT HTUTs (~30% at 250 ° C). To verify the excellent performance, B-mode scanning imaging measurement of a stepped steel block and defect location detection of a steel block was performed, showing the potential for high-temperature NDT applications.

Background: Traditional Chinese Medicinal Plants (CMPs) hold a significant and core status for the healthcare system and cultural heritage in China. It has been practiced and refined with a history of exceeding thousands of years for health-protective affection and clinical treatment in China. It plays an indispensable role in the traditional health landscape and modern medical care. It is important to accurately identify CMPs for avoiding the affected clinical safety and medication efficacy by the different processed conditions and cultivation environment confusion., Results: In this study, we utilize a self-developed device to obtain high-resolution data. Furthermore, we constructed a visual multi-varieties CMPs image dataset. Firstly, a random local data enhancement preprocessing method is proposed to enrich the feature representation for imbalanced data by random cropping and random shadowing. Then, a novel hybrid supervised pre-training network is proposed to expand the integration of global features within Masked Autoencoders (MAE) by incorporating a parallel classification branch. It can effectively enhance the feature capture capabilities by integrating global features and local details. Besides, the newly designed losses are proposed to strengthen the training efficiency and improve the learning capacity, based on reconstruction loss and classification loss., Conclusions: Extensive experiments are performed on our dataset as well as the public dataset. Experimental results demonstrate that our method achieves the best performance among the state-of-the-art methods, highlighting the advantages of efficient implementation of plant technology and having good prospects for real-world applications., (© 2024. Topological Dirac nodal-line semimetals host topologically nontrivial electronic structure with nodal-line crossings around the Fermi level, which could affect the photocarrier dynamics and lead to novel relaxation mechanisms. Herein, by using time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we reveal the previously inaccessible linear dispersions of the bulk conduction bands above the Fermi level in a Dirac nodal-line semimetal PtSn 4 , as well as the momentum and temporal evolution of the gapless nodal lines. A surprisingly ultrafast relaxation dynamics within a few hundred femtoseconds is revealed for photoexcited carriers in the nodal line. Theoretical calculations suggest that such ultrafast carrier relaxation is attributed to the multichannel scatterings among the complex metallic bands of PtSn 4 via electron-phonon coupling. In addition, a unique dynamic relaxation mechanism contributed by the highly anisotropic Dirac nodal-line electronic structure is also identified. Our work provides a comprehensive understanding of the ultrafast carrier dynamics in a Dirac nodal-line semimetal.

Emerging evidence shows that FAT atypical cadherin 1 (FAT1) mutations occur in lymphoma and are associated with poorer overall survival. Considering that diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is the category of lymphoma with the highest incidence rate, this study aims to explore the role of FAT1 in DLBCL. The findings demonstrate that FAT1 inhibits the proliferation of DLBCL cell lines by downregulating the expression of YAP1 rather than by altering its cellular localization. Mechanistic analysis via meRIP-qPCR/luciferase reporter assays showed that FAT1 increases the m 6 A modification of YAP1 mRNA 3'UTR and the subsequent binding of heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein D (HNRNPD) to the m 6 A modified YAP1 mRNA, thus decreasing the stability of YAP1 mRNA. Furthermore, FAT1 increases YAP1 mRNA 3'UTR m 6 A modification by decreasing the activity of the TGFβ-Smad2/3 pathway and the subsequent expression of ALKBH5, which is regulated at the transcriptional level by Smad2/3. Collectively, these results reveal that FAT1 inhibits the proliferation of DLBCL cells by increasing the m 6 A modification of the YAP1 mRNA 3'UTR via the TGFβ-Smad2/3-ALKBH5 pathway. Defect-engineered metal-organic frameworks (DEMOFs) are emerging advanced materials. The construction of DEMOFs is of great significance; however, DEMOF-based catalysis remains unexplored. (E)-vinylboronates, an important building block for asymmetric synthesis, can be synthesized via the hydroboration of alkynes. However, the lack of high-performance catalysts considerably hinders their synthesis. Herein, a series of DEHKUST-1 (HKUST = Hong Kong University of Science and Technology) (Da-f) catalysts with missing occupation of linkers at Cu nodes were designed by partially replacing benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate (H 3 BTC) with defective connectors of pyridine-3,5-dicarboxylate (PYDC) to efficiently promote the hydroboration of alkynes. Results showed that the Dd containing 0.8 doping ratio of PYDC exhibited remarkable catalytic activity than the defect-free HKUST-1. This originated from the improved accessibility for reactants towards the Lewis acid active Cu sites of DEHKUST-1 due to the presence of plenty of rooms next to the Cu sites and enhanced coordination ability in such 'defective' HKUST-1. Dd had high selectivity (>99 %) and yield (>96 %) for (E)-vinylboronates and extensive functional group compatibility for terminal alkynes. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to elucidate the mechanism of hydroboration. Aging-related hypogonadism involves complex mechanisms in humans, predominantly relating to the decline of multiple hormones and senile gonads. Late-onset hypogonadism (LOH) and erectile dysfunction (ED) are the main manifestations in men, while premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) and menopause are the main forms in women. Anti-aging measures include lifestyle modification and resistance training, hormonal supplementation, stem cell therapy, metformin, and rapamycin. In this expert consensus, the mechanisms, efficacy, and side effects of stem cell therapy on aging gonadal function are reviewed. Furthermore, various methods of stem cell therapy, administered intravenously, intracavernously, and intra-ovarially, are exemplified in detail. More clinical trials on aging-related gonadal dysfunction are required to solidify the foundation of this topic.

The discovery of room-temperature ferromagnetism in van der Waals (vdW) materials opens new avenues for exploring low-dimensional magnetism and its applications in spintronics. Recently, the observation of the room-temperature topological Hall effect in the vdW ferromagnet Fe 3 GaTe 2 suggests the possible existence of room-temperature skyrmions, yet skyrmions have not been directly observed. In this study, real-space imaging was employed to investigate the domain evolution of the labyrinth and skyrmion structure. First, Néel-type skyrmions can be created at room temperature. In addition, the influence of flake thickness and external magnetic field (during field cooling) on both labyrinth domains and the skyrmion lattice is unveiled. Due to the competition between magnetic anisotropy and dipole interactions, the specimen thickness significantly influences the density of skyrmions. These findings demonstrate that Fe 3 GaTe 2 can host room-temperature skyrmions of various sizes, opening up avenues for further study of magnetic topological textures at room temperature.

Tuning the interfacial Schottky barrier with van der Waals (vdW) contacts is an important solution for two-dimensional (2D) electronics. Here we report that the interlayer dipoles of 2D vdW superlattices (vdWSLs) can be used to engineer vdW contacts to 2D semiconductors. A bipolar WSe 2 with Ba 6 Ta 11 S 28 (BTS) vdW contact was employed to exhibit this strategy. Strong interlayer dipoles can be formed due to charge transfer between the Ba 3 TaS 5 and TaS 2 layers. Mechanical exfoliation breaks the superlattice and produces two distinguished surfaces with TaS 2 and Ba 3 TaS 5 terminations. The surfaces thus have opposite surface dipoles and consequently different work functions. Therefore, all the devices fall into two categories in accordance with the rectifying direction, which were verified by electrical measurements and scanning photocurrent microscopy. The growing vdWSL family along with the addition surface dipoles enables prospective vdW contact designs and have practical application in nanoelectronics and nano optoelectronics.

Gravity-driven membrane (GDM) systems have been well developed previously; however, impacts of driving (i.e., transmembrane) pressure on their performance received little attention, which may influence GDM performance. In this study, we evaluated 4 GDM systems via altering the transmembrane pressure from 50 mbar to 150 mbar with 2 groups, treating surface water in Beijing, China. Results showed that less driving pressure was more favorable. Specifically, compared to groups (150 mbar), groups under a pressure of 50 mbar were found to have greater normalized permeability and lower total resistance. During the whole operation period, the quality of effluents was gradually improved. For example, the removal efficiency of UV 254 was significantly improved; particularly, under low driving pressure, the removal efficiency of UV 254 in PES GDM system increased by 11.91%, as compared to the corresponding system under high driving pressure. This observation was consistent with the reduction on disinfection by-products (DBPs) formation potential; groups under 50 mbar achieved better DBPs potential control, indicating the advantages of lower driving pressure. Biofilms were analyzed and responsible for these differences, and distinct distributions of bacteria communities of two GDM systems under 50 and 150 mbar may be responsible for various humic-like substances removal efficiency. Background: Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion is the most commonly used surgical approach for treating cervical spine conditions, but it can often lead to postoperative swallowing difficulties. To retrospectively assess the effects of topical triamcinolone acetonide in the anterior cervical surgery on swallowing function., Methods: In this study, a retrospective design was used to select patients aged 18 years and older who were diagnosed with cervical spondylosis and required anterior cervical discectomy and fusion. Among them, the patients in the experimental group used triamcinolone acetonide topically in front of the plate during surgery, and the control group was the patients who did not use triamcinolone acetonide. The sex, age, operation time, operation segment, and preoperative soft tissue area were compared between the two groups., Results: There were no significant differences in gender, age, operation time, and segment between the two groups. For the preoperative soft tissue area, triamcinolone acetonide was significantly lower than in the control group ( P < 0.05)., Conclusion: The retrospective results of this study support that topical triamcinolone acetonide as a treatment in anterior cervical surgery can significantly reduce soft tissue swelling, and no effect was found on the operation time, postoperative blood loss, and segment. These findings provide an important basis for clinical care teams to make treatment decisions and confirm the effectiveness of triamcinolone acetonide in improving swallowing function. However, there was a possibility of information collection and selection bias due to the limitations of retrospective studies. Terrestrial dissolved organic matter (DOM) is critical to global carbon and nutrient cycling, climate change, and human health. However, how the spatial and compositional differences of soil DOM affect its dynamics and fate in water during the carbon cycle is largely unclear. Herein, the biodegradation of DOM from 14 spatially distributed grassland soils in China with diverse organic composition was investigated by 165 days of incubation experiments. The results showed that although the high humified fraction (high-HS) regions were featured by high humic-like fractions of 4-25 kDa molecular weight, especially the abundant condensed aromatics and tannins, they unexpectedly displayed greater DOM degradation during 45-165 days. In contrast, the unique proteinaceous and 25-100 kDa fractions enriched in the low humified fraction (low-HS) regions were drastically depleted and improved the decay of bulk DOM but only during 0-45 days. Together, DOM from the high-HS regions would cause lower CO 2 outgassing to the atmosphere but higher organic loads for drinking water production in the short term than that from the low-HS regions. However, this would be reversed for the two regions during the long-term transformation processes. These findings highlight the importance of spatial and temporal variability of DOM biogeochemistry to mitigate the negative impacts of grassland soil DOM on climate, waters, and humans.

Background: There are few studies on cryptorchidism in adults, and its treatment is still controversial., Methods: To summarize the surgical strategy and clinical efficacy of laparoscopic orchidopexy for the treatment of cryptorchidism in adults, 37 adult cryptorchidism patients were retrospectively analyzed between September 2017 and February 2022. All 37 patients underwent laparoscopic orchidopexy, of whom 33 underwent inguinal hernia repair without tension. The intraoperative procedures and surgical techniques were recorded in detail. Preoperative examination and regular postoperative review of color Doppler ultrasound, and reproductive hormone, alpha-fetoprotein, human chorionic gonadotropin, and lactate dehydrogenase levels were performed., Results: All testes descended successfully into the scrotum, including 25 through the inguinal route and 12 through Hesselbach's triangle route. No intraoperative or postoperative complications were observed. The follow-up time was 38.6 (± 19.4) months, and no evidence of testicular malignancy was found during the follow-up period. After analyzing the reproductive hormone levels at 1 year postoperatively in 28 patients with more than 1 year of follow-up, it was found that the patients had a significant increase in testosterone levels and a decrease in follicle-stimulating hormone levels after surgery. None of the patients showed any significant improvement in semen quality after surgery., Conclusion: Our study suggests that laparoscopic orchidopexy is a safe and feasible surgical procedure for the treatment of cryptorchidism in adults, especially high cryptorchidism, which is difficult to treat. Objective: In this study, we aimed to explore the demographic and clinical factors that could determine short- and long-term complete pain relief (CPR) in adult patients with primary trigeminal neuralgia (PTN) after microvascular decompression (MVD) to guide clinical practice., Methods: This single-center retrospective study included adult patients with PTN who underwent MVD as their initial neurosurgical procedure in the Department of Neurosurgery at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University from January 2017 to December 2019 and completed a 3-year post-surgery follow-up. Demographic and clinical information was obtained from medical records. Pain relief of adult patients with PTN at various time points after sufficient decompression of trigeminal nerve (TN) during MVD was determined and classified by the patient's subjective response and medications use. Pain relief of local patients was evaluated by outpatient follow-up at various time points, whereas that of local cases who could not return to outpatient or non-local cases was assessed through telephone or WeChat., Results: In univariate analysis, compression degree of TN and type of conflicting vessels constantly showed significant differences between the two groups at 3 months, 6 months, 1 year, 2 years, and 3 years after MVD. Compression degree of TN and type of conflicting vessels at various time points after MVD were always the related factors to CPR in logistic regression analysis, with the former having the greatest impact. The areas under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve of CPR at various time points after MVD were 0.937, 0.874, 0.879, 0.864, and 0.869, respectively., Conclusion: In summary, compression degree of TN and type of conflicting vessels can determine short- and long-term CPR in adult patients with PTN after MVD., Competing Interests: The authors report no conflicts of interest in this work., (© 2023 Zhao et al.)

Image fusion technology had been widely applied in image guided radiotherapy (IGRT) for prostate cancer (PCa) based on the gold fiducial mark (GFM). Image fusion technology included the fusion of CT image, magnetic resonance image, and ultrasound image internally or externally. The application of image fusion technology had improved the identification accuracy of GFM and was helpful for the plan design of PCa radiotherapy. This article provided a systematic review of the application of fusion of various medical images in PCa IGRT in recent years. Among them, the application and result of image fusion technology in GFM identification and the impact on the plan design for PCa radiotherapy were emphasized. It hoped that this review could provide some theoretical reference for the deeper integration of image fusion technology with PCa IGRT.

Gene therapy is a promising strategy for HCC treatment, but it commonly faces the problem of low specificity in gene transfection. In this study, we designed and synthesized a series of peptide-based gene delivery vectors (H-01 to H-18) containing varied HCC cell-targeting fragments for specifically binding different receptors highly expressed on HCC cell membranes. The physicochemical properties of peptide vectors or peptide/DNA complexes were characterized, and the gene delivery abilities of peptide vectors were evaluated in HepG2 cell lines. The results showed that peptide vectors H-02 and H-09, which contained targeted fragments for ACE2 and c-Met receptors, respectively, could specifically transfect HCC cells in a highly -efficient manner in vitro . Furthermore, the liver-targeting function in vivo of Cy5.5 labeled H-02 (H-17) and H-09 (H-18) was investigated by fluorescence imaging.

Introduction: This study aimed to identify the characteristics of unipolar and bipolar electrogram (UniEGM and BiEGM) in guiding successful ablation of premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) originating from the free wall of the ventricular aspect of the tricuspid annulus (TA). We hypothesized that the negative concordance pattern (NCP) on the onset of UniEGM and BiEGM, together with the least value of the difference between the earliest BiEGM and UniEGM dV/dTmax, might improve the accuracy of conventional mapping., Methods and Results: Thirty consecutive patients who underwent successful catheter ablation from February 2018 to July 2021 were retrospectively analyzed. The BiEGM and UniEGM for successful ablation sites were compared with those for non-successful ablation sites. Among the 30 patients, 30 successful and 26 nonsuccessful ablation sites were compared. The earliest activation time of the BiEGM (BiEGMoneset-QRS) was 25 ± 6 ms for the successful ablation sites and 21 ± 6 ms for the nonsuccessful ablation sites (p = .47). The value of the difference in the earliest BiEGM and UniEGM dV/dTmax differed between successful and nonsuccessful ablation sites (6.4 ± 3.6 ms vs. 10.4 ± 6.8 ms). NCP was observed at 90.0% and 42.3% of the successful and nonsuccessful ablation sites, respectively. Alignment of NCP and BiEGMonset-UniEGM ≤6 ms was applied as the mapping criterion for successful PVC suppression (73.1% sensitivity and 87.7% specificity). The area under the receiver-operating characteristic curve for this cutoff was 0.85., Conclusion: Mapping based on an NCP at the onset of the BiEGM and UniEGM and the least difference value of the earliest BiEGM and UniEGM dV/dTmax had an excellent predictive value for successful ablation. Zero-shot image recognition aims to classify data from unseen classes, by exploring the association between visual features and the semantic representations of each class. Most existing approaches focus on learning a shared single-scale embedding space (often at the output layer of the network) for both visual and semantic features, ignoring a fact that different-scale visual features exhibit different semantics. In this article, we propose a multi-scale visual-attribute co-attention (mVACA) model, considering both visual-semantic alignment and visual discrimination at multiple scales. At each scale, a hybrid visual attention is realized by attribute-related attention and visual self-attention. The attribute-related attention is guided by a pseudo attribute vector inferred via a mutual information regularization (MIR). The visual self-attentive features further influence the attribute attention to emphasize visual-associated attributes. Leveraging multiscale visual discrimination, mVACA unifies standard zero-shot learning (ZSL) and generalized ZSL tasks in one framework, achieving state-of-the-art or competitive performance on several commonly used benchmarks of both setups. To better understand the interaction between images and attributes in mVACA, we also provide visualized analysis.

Reversed nonlinear dynamics is predicted to be capable of enhancing the quantum sensing in unprecedented ways. Here, we report the experimental demonstration of a loss-tolerant (external loss) and quantum-enhanced interferometer. Two cascaded optical parametric amplifiers are used to judiciously construct an interferometry with two orthogonal squeezing operation. As a consequence, a weak displacement introduced by a test cavity can be amplified for measurement, and the measured signal-to-noise ratio is better than that of both conventional photon shot-noise limited and squeezed-light assisted interferometers. We further confirm its superior loss-tolerant performance by varying the external losses and comparing with both conventional photon shot-noise limited and squeezed-light assisted configurations, illustrating the potential application in gravitational wave detection.

Promoting the catalyst performance for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in energy conversion devices through controlled manipulation of the structure of catalytic active sites has been a major challenge. In this work, we prepared Fe-N-C single-atom catalysts (SACs) with Fe-N 5 active sites and found that the catalytic activity of the catalyst with shrinkable Fe-N 5 -C 11 sites for ORR was significantly improved compared with the catalyst bearing normal Fe-N 5 -C 12 sites. The catalyst C@PVI-(TPC)Fe-800, prepared by pyrolyzing an axial-imidazole-coordinated iron corrole precursor, exhibited positive shifted half-wave potential ( E 1/2 = 0.89 V vs RHE) and higher peak power density ( P max = 129 mW/cm 2 ) than the iron porphyrin-derived counterpart C@PVI-(TPP)Fe-800 ( E 1/2 = 0.81 V, P max = 110 mW/cm 2 ) in 0.1 M KOH electrolyte and Zn-air batteries, respectively. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) analysis of C@PVI-(TPC)Fe-800 revealed a contracted Fe-N 5 -C 11 structure with iron in a higher oxidation state than the porphyrin-derived Fe-N 5 -C 12 counterpart. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrated that C@PVI-(TPC)Fe-800 possesses a higher HOMO energy level than C@PVI-(TPP)Fe-800, which can increase its electron-donating ability and thus help achieve enhanced O 2 adsorption as well as O-O bond activation. This work provides a new approach to tune the active site structure of SACs with unique contracted Fe-N 5 -C 11 sites that remarkably promote the catalyst performance, suggesting significant implications for catalyst design in energy conversion devices.

Lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)) is a largely genetically determined biomarker for cardiovascular disease (CVD), while its potential interplay with family history (FHx) of CVD, a measure of both genetic and environmental exposures, remains unclear. We examined the associations of Lp(a) in terms of circulating concentration or polygenetic risk score (PRS), and FHx of CVD with risk of incident heart failure (HF). Included were 299,158 adults from the UK Biobank without known HF and CVD at baseline. Hazards ratios (HRs) and 95% Cls were estimated by Cox regression models adjusted for traditional risk factors defined by the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities study HF risk score. During the 11.8-year follow-up, 5,502 incidents of HF occurred. Higher levels of circulating Lp(a), Lp(a) PRS, and positive FHx of CVD were associated with higher risks of HF. Compared with individuals who had lower circulating Lp(a) and no FHx, HRs (95% CIs) of HF were 1.36 (1.25, 1.49), 1.31 (1.19, 1.43), and 1.42 (1.22, 1.67) for those with higher Lp(a) and a positive history of CVD for all family members, parents, and siblings, respectively; similar results were observed by using Lp(a) PRS. The risk estimates for HF associated with elevated Lp(a) and positive FHx were attenuated after excluding those with incident myocardial infarction (MI) during follow-up. Lp(a) and FHx of CVD were independent risk factors for incident HF, and the highest risk of HF was observed among individuals with both risk factors. On April 13, 2023, the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) released the third edition of the 2023 NCCN Oncology Clinical Practice Guidelines: Non-small Cell Lung Cancer, which reflects the latest advances in international lung cancer research. This article will interpret the main updated contents of the new edition of the guidelines, and compare it with the third edition of the NCCN guidelines in 2022, so as to provide references about the diagnosis and treatment of NSCLC for clinical medical personnel in China.

Quantum entanglement is an important pillar of quantum information processing. In addition to the entanglement degree, the bandwidth of entangled states becomes another focus of quantum communication. Here, by virtue of a broadband frequency-dependent beam splitter, we experimentally demonstrate six pairs of independent entangled sideband modes with maximum entanglement degree of 8.1 dB. Utilizing a time delay compensation scheme, the bandwidth of independent entangled sideband modes is expanded to dozens of megahertz. This work provides a valuable resource to implement efficient quantum information processing.

Background: Nutcracker syndrome (NCS) is a rare cause of varicocele and its treatment is still controversial., Objective: To summarize the surgical strategy and outcomes of microvascular Doppler (MVD)-assisted microsurgical left spermatic-inferior epigastric vein anastomosis (MLSIEVA) with microsurgical varicocelectomy (MV) at the same incision for treating NCS-associated varicocele., Design Setting and Participants: A retrospective analysis of 13 cases of NCS-associated varicocele between July 2018 and January 2022 was performed., Surgical Procedure: A small incision in the body projection corresponding to the deep inguinal ring was chosen as the surgical incision. All patients underwent MLSIEVA and MV with the assistance of MVD., Measurements: Patients received real-time Doppler ultrasound (DUS) before and after surgery; urine red blood cells and protein were tested, with a follow-up time of 12-53 mo., Results and Limitations: All patients had no intraoperative complications, and all postoperative symptoms of hematuria or proteinuria, scrotal swelling, and low back pain disappeared. Comparing pre- and postoperative DUS, two patients did not show any improvement in their postoperative measurements. However, in the remaining patients, the internal diameter of the renal vein at the hilum portion and at the aortomesenteric angle portion, as well as their ratio, improved significantly compared with preoperative measurements. No complications or recurrence of varicocele was observed during postoperative follow-up., Conclusions: Our study suggests that MVD-assisted MLSIEVA with MV is feasible with no major short-term complication and effective regarding the treatment of varicocele and NCS., Patient Summary: We investigated microsurgery mediated by microultrasound for the treatment of varicocele associated with nutcracker syndrome. For many years, metamaterial absorbers have received much attention in a wide range of application fields. There is an increasing need to search for new design approaches that fulfill more and more complex tasks. According to the specific application requirements, design strategy can vary from structure configurations to material selections. A new combination of a dielectric cavity array, dielectric spacer, and gold reflector as a metamaterial absorber is proposed and theoretically studied in this work. The complexity of the dielectric cavities leads to a more flexible optical response than traditional metamaterial absorbers. It gives a new dimension of freedom for a real three-dimensional metamaterial absorber design.

RNA modifications implicate pathological and prognosis significance in cancer development and progression, of which, m6A and m5C are representative regulators. These RNA modifications could produce effects on the function of other RNA by regulating gene expression. Thus, in this study, we aimed to explore the correlation between m6A/m5C regulators and early-stage lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD). Only the early-stage LUAD samples were included in this investigation, and the RNA-seq dataset of The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) cohort was utilized to evaluate the expression of 37 m6A/m5C regulated genes. Based on the expression level of these 37 genes, early-stage LUAD patients were divided into 2 clusters, which were performed by consensus clustering, and the m6A/m5C subtypes had significantly different prognostic outcomes ( p < 0.001). Cluster1, which has a better prognosis, was characterized by the C3 (inflammatory) immune subtype, low immune infiltration, chemokine expression, major histocompatibility complex (MHC) expression, and immune checkpoint molecule expression. Furthermore, compared with cluster1, cluster2 showed a T cell exhaustion state, characterized by a high expression of immune checkpoint genes, and immune cells, such as T cells, CD8+ T cells, cytotoxic lymphocytes, NK cells, and so on. In addition, patients in cluster2 were with high tumor mutational burden (TMB) and numerous significant mutated oncogene and tumor suppressor genes, such as WNT10B, ERBB4, SMARCA4, TP53, and CDKN2A ( p < 0.001). A total of 19 genes were mostly related to the prognosis of LUAD and were upregulated in cluster2 ( p < 0.05), showing a positive correlation with the mRNA expression of 37 m6A/m5C regulated genes. The predictive risk model was constructed using Cox and LASSO (least absolute shrinkage and selection operator) regression analysis. Finally, a seven-gene m6A/m5C risk model, comprising of METTL3, NPLOC4, RBM15, YTHDF1, IGF2BP1, NSUN3, and NSUN7, was constructed to stratify the prognosis of early-stage LUAD ( p = 0.0049, AUC = 0.791). The high-risk score was associated with a poorer prognosis. This model was also validated using two additional GEO datasets: GSE72094 ( p = 0.011, AUC = 0.736) and GSE50081 ( p = 0.012, AUC = 0.628). In summary, it was established that the m6A/m5C-regulated genes performed a crosstalk function in the mRNA expression of early-stage LUAD. By interacting with other mRNA genes, m6A/m5C modification disturbs DNA replication and the tumor immune microenvironment (TIME). The seven-gene risk model may be a critical tool for the prognostic assessment of early-stage LUAD.

Biological particles, e.g., viruses, lipid particles, and extracellular vesicles, are attracting significant research interest due to their role in biological processes and potential in practical applications, such as vaccines, diagnostics, and therapies. Their surface and interior contain many different molecules including lipids, nucleic acids, proteins, and carbohydrates. In this Letter, we show how distance-controlled surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a promising method to extract essential information from the spatial origin of the signal. This is a highly important parameter in the analysis of these biological particles. The principle of the method is demonstrated by using polystyrene (PS) beads as a biological particle model conjugated with gold nanospheres (AuNSs) functioning as distance-controlled SERS probes via biotin-streptavidin binding. By tuning the size of AuNSs, the Raman signal from the PS beads can be weakened while the signal from the biotin-streptavidin complex is enhanced.

The feature of low-density and thermal insulation properties of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) foam is one of the important challenges of the silicone industry seeking to make these products more competitive compared to traditional polymer foams. Herein, we report a green, simple, and low-cost strategy for synthesizing ultra-low-density porous silicone composite materials via Si-H cross-linking and foaming chemistry, and the sialylation-modified hollow glass microspheres (m-HM) were used to promote the HM/PDMS compatibility. Typically, the presence of 7.5 wt% m-HM decreases the density of pure foam from 135 mg/cm -3 to 104 mg/cm -3 without affecting the foaming reaction between Si-H and Si-OH and produces a stable porous structure. The optimized m-HM-modified PDMS foam composites showed excellent mechanical flexibility (unchanged maximum stress values at a strain of 70% after 100 compressive cycles) and good thermal insulation (from 150.0 °C to 52.1 °C for the sample with ~20 mm thickness). Our results suggest that the use of hollow microparticles is an effective strategy for fabricating lightweight, mechanically flexible, and thermal insulation PDMS foam composite materials for many potential applications.

Background: Currently, no recognized evidence is known about the bacterial communities found within seminal vesicles (SV) of men presenting with refractory hematospermia., Methods and Results: Fifteen male patients with refractory hematospermia or anejaculation were enrolled, and 15 SV-Infection (SV-In) samples from SV with hemorrhage and/or stones, 11 SV-Control (SV-C) samples from SV with non-infection, and 14 Urine (Urine) samples from posterior urethra were obtained via transurethral seminal vesiculoscopy. Then the high-throughput 16 S rRNA gene sequencing method was performed to characterize the microbiota profile. Finally, a total of 1535 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) were found, 1295 OTUs were shared across three groups, 7 OTUs, 45 OTUs, and 48 OTUs were unique to SV-C group, SV-In group, and Urine group, respectively. The 5 top bacterial phyla (mean relative abundance) in all samples were Firmicutes (52.08%), Bacteroidetes (21.69%), Proteobacteria (12.72%), Actinobacteria (9.64%), and Fusobacteria (1.62%), the 5 top bacterial genera in all samples were Bacteroides (9.13%), Lactobacillus (5.38%), Bifidobacterium (5.35%), Faecalibacterium (5.10%), and Allobaculum (3.34%), of which Bifidobacterium had the highest level in SV-C samples and had a significant difference (P < 0.05) across all groups. Differential analysis showed genera Leuconostoc and LachnospiraceaeFCS020group were identified as biomarkers in the SV-In microbiota., Conclusion: Altered microbiota composition in seminal vesicles is related to refractory hematospermia in men, and the distribution of genus Leuconostoc or LachnospiraceaeFCS020group within seminal vesicles may interact with hematospermia. Fusarium concentricum Nirenberg & O' Donnell (Ascomycota: Hypocreales) is a fungal species known to infect plants, but never reported as entomopathogenic. Polychrosis cunninhamiacola Liu et Pei (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae: Olethreutinae) is a major and widespread insect pest causing economic losses to cultivated Chinese fir Cunninghamia lanceolata (Lamb.) Hook. It is routinely controlled by extensive use of chemical insecticides, which is perceived as environmentally unsustainable. During March and April of 2019-2020, muscardine cadavers of larvae and pupae of P. cunninhamiacola infected with growing fungus were collected in a fir forest in northern Guangdong Province, China. Conidia were isolated and cultured on PDA medium, from which the fungal strain was identified as F. concentricum FCPC-L01 by morphology and by sequence alignment match with Tef-1α gene. Pathogenicity bioassays at the conidial concentration 1 × 107 revealed P. cunninhamiacola adults and Danaus chrysippus (L.) (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae) larvae are sensitive to the fungal infection, but not the fire ant Solenopsis invicta Buren (Hymenoptera: Formicidae). We believe results indicate this fungal strain might be applicable against specific target insect pests. As this is the first record of a natural infection caused by F. concentricum in insects, we propose host specificity tests should be done to evaluate its potential as a biocontrol agent., (© The Author(s) 2023. Thanks to the increasing availability of technologies for thin film deposition, all-dielectric structures are becoming more and more attractive for integrated photonics. As light-matter interactions are involved, Bloch Surface Waves (BSWs) may represent a viable alternative to plasmonic platforms, allowing easy wavelength and polarization manipulation and reduced absorption losses. However, plasmon-based devices operating at an optical and near-infrared frequency have been demonstrated to reach extraordinary field confinement capabilities, with localized mode volumes of down to a few nanometers. Although such levels of energy localization are substantially unattainable with dielectrics, it is possible to operate subwavelength field confinement by employing high-refractive index materials with proper patterning such as, e.g., photonic crystals and metasurfaces. Here, we propose a computational study on the transverse localization of BSWs by means of quasi-flat Fabry-Perot microcavities, which have the advantage of being fully exposed toward the outer environment. These structures are constituted by defected periodic corrugations of a dielectric multilayer top surface. The dispersion and spatial distribution of BSWs' cavity mode are presented. In addition, the hybridization of BSWs with an A exciton in a 2D flake of tungsten disulfide (WS 2 ) is also addressed. We show evidence of strong coupling involving not only propagating BSWs but also localized BSWs, namely, band-edge and cavity modes.

The luminescent performances of near-infrared (NIR) lanthanide (Ln) complexes were restricted greatly by vibration quenching of X-H (X = C, N, O) oscillators, which are usually contained in ligands and solvents. Encapsulating Ln 3+ into a cavity of coordination atoms is a feasible method of alleviating this quenching effect. In this work, a novel ytterbium complex [Yb(DPPDA) 2 ](DIPEA) coordinated with 4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-dicarboxylic acid (DPPDA) was synthesized and characterized by FT-IR, ESI-MS and elemental analysis. Under the excitation of 335 nm light, [Yb(DPPDA) 2 ](DIPEA) showed two emission peaks at 975 and 1011 nm, respectively, which were assigned to the characteristic 2 F 5/2 → 2 F 7/2 transition of Yb 3+ . Meanwhile, this ytterbium complex exhibited a plausible absolute quantum yield of 0.46% and a luminescent lifetime of 105 μs in CD 3 OD solution. In particular, its intrinsic quantum yield was calculated to be 12.5%, and this considerably high value was attributed to the near-zero solvent molecules bound to Yb 3+ and the absence of X-H oscillators in the first coordination sphere. Based on experimental results, we further proposed that the sensitized luminescence of [Yb(DPPDA) 2 ](DIPEA) occurred via an internal redox mechanism instead of an energy transfer process.

Millimeter-wave (MMW) imaging techniques have been widely used in the public security industries for their under-controlled privacy concerns and no health hazards. However, since MMW images are low resolution and most objects are small, reflection-weak, diverse, suspicious object detection in the MMW images is a very challenging task. This paper develops a robust suspicious object detector for the MMW images based on the Siamese network integrated with the pose estimation and image segmentation, which estimates the coordinates of human joints and segments the complete human images into symmetrical body part images. Unlike most existing detectors, which detect and recognize suspicious objects in MMW images and require a complete training set with correct annotations, our proposed model aims to learn the similarity between two symmetrical human body part images segmented from the complete MMW images. Furthermore, to decrease the misdetection caused by the restricted field of view, we further fuse the multi-view MMW images observed from the same person by designing a decision-level fusion strategy and feature-level fusion strategy based on the attention mechanism. Experimental results on the measured MMW images show that our proposed models have favorable detection accuracy and speed in practical application and thus prove their effectiveness.

When using off-axis digital image correlation (DIC) for non-contact, remote, and multipoint deflection monitoring of engineering structures, accurate calibration of the scale factor (SF), which converts image displacement to physical displacement for each measurement point, is critical to realize high-quality displacement measurement. In this work, based on the distortion-free pinhole imaging model, a generalized SF calibration model is proposed for an off-axis DIC-based video deflectometer. Then, the transversal relationship between the proposed SF calibration method and three commonly used SF calibration methods was discussed. The accuracy of these SF calibration methods was also compared using indoor rigid body translation experiments. It is proved that the proposed method can be degraded to one of the existing calibration methods in most cases, but will provide more accurate results under the following four conditions: (1) the camera's pitch angle is more than 20°, (2) the focal length is more than 25 mm, (3) the pixel size of the camera sensor is more than 5 um, and (4) the image y-coordinate corresponding to the measurement point after deformation is far from the image center.

Zinc (Zn)-regulated and iron (Fe)-regulated transporter-like proteins (ZIP) are key players involved in the accumulation of cadmium (Cd) and Zn in plants. Sedum plumbizincicola X.H. Guo et S.B. Zhou ex L.H. Wu ( S. plumbizincicola ) is a Crassulaceae Cd/Zn hyperaccumulator found in China, but the role of ZIPs in S. plumbizincicola remains largely unexplored. Here, we identified 12 members of ZIP family genes by transcriptome analysis in S. plumbizincicola and cloned the SpZIP2 gene with functional analysis. The expression of SpZIP2 in roots was higher than that in the shoots, and Cd stress significantly decreased its expression in the roots but increased its expression in leaves. Protein sequence characteristics and structural analysis showed that the content of alanine and leucine residues in the SpZIP2 sequence was higher than other residues, and several serine, threonine and tyrosine sites can be phosphorylated. Transmembrane domain analysis showed that SpZIP2 has the classic eight transmembrane regions. The evolutionary analysis found that SpZIP2 is closely related to OsZIP2, followed by AtZIP11, OsZIP1 and AtZIP2. Sequence alignment showed that most of the conserved sequences among these members were located in the transmembrane regions. A further metal sensitivity assay using yeast mutant Δ yap1 showed that the expression of SpZIP2 increased the sensitivity of the transformants to Cd but failed to change the resistance to Zn. The subsequent ion content determination showed that the expression of SpZIP2 increased the accumulation of Cd in yeast. Subcellular localization showed that SpZIP2 was localized to membrane systems, including the plasma membrane and endoplasmic reticulum. The above results indicate that ZIP member SpZIP2 participates in the uptake and accumulation of Cd into cells and might contribute to Cd hyperaccumulation in S. plumbizincicola .

Phthalates have been shown to have adverse effects on neurodevelopment, which may be gender-specific. However, the association between prenatal mixed exposure to phthalates and children's neurodevelopment remains inconsistent. We measured 15 prenatal serum phthalate levels and evaluated children's neurodevelopmental indicators using Gesell Developmental Schedule (GDS) (n = 750). Generalized linear regression was fitted to examine the association. Among boys, mono-2-ethyl-5-hydroxyhexyl phthalate (MEHHP) had adverse effects on gross motor [odds ratio (OR): 7.38, 95% confidence interval (CI):1.42, 38.46]. For gross motor in boys, joint effect was discovered between mono-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (MEHP) and MEHHP. Moreover, synergistic effects were found for MEHP with vanadium and cadmium, and antagonistic effects for MEHP with magnesium, calcium, titanium, iron, copper, selenium, rubidium, and strontium. We did not find statistically significant relationships in girls. In the 1st trimester, adverse effects were identified between mono-2-ethyl-5-oxoyhexyl phthalate (MEOHP) and adaptation (P = 0.024), and monomethyl phthalate (MMP) with social area (P = 0.017). In the 2nd trimester, MEHHP had adverse effects on social area (P = 0.035). In summary, we found boys may be more vulnerable to the neurotoxicity than girls in gross motor, and we also discovered the detrimental effects of phthalates on children's neurodevelopment in the 1st and 2nd trimesters. Therefore, the supplementation of appropriate elements in the 1st and 2nd trimesters may help reduce the adverse effects of phthalates on children's neurodevelopment, especially among boys., (© 2022. To evaluate the changes in testicular stiffness and microcirculation caused by spermatic vein ligation in patients with varicocele, we conducted a case-controlled study. A total of 27 grade III left varicocele cases were enrolled. Testicular stiffness and perfusion were evaluated by shear wave elastography and contrast-enhanced ultrasound during subinguinal microscopic varicocelectomy. The external and the internal parenchyma of bilateral testes were selected to compare the shear wave velocity of bilateral testes during the spermatic vein ligation. We mapped and compared the intensity-time curves following bolus contrast injection three times in the same region of interest. Initially, the shear wave velocity of the left internal parenchyma was higher than the right side (1.10 ± 0.06 m/s vs. 1.00 ± 0.03 m/s). It decreased (1.09 ± 0.06 m/s) (p < 0.05) after ligation. Meanwhile, the left epididymis had the higher agent peak intensity (0.90 × 10E-5 AU), the largest area under the curve (80.20 × 10E-5 AU s), and the longest washout area (54.35 × 10E-5 AU s). In addition, the left internal parenchyma presented a sharper slope (0.18 × 10E-5 AU/s) (p < 0.05). In conclusion, the spermatic vein ligation improved the perfusion of the internal testicular parenchyma, but it could temporally deteriorate the stasis of the epididymis. Successful gene therapy for brain tumors are often limited by two important factors, the existence of blood brain barrier (BBB) and inefficient transfection of brain tumor cells. In this study, we designed a series of peptide-based gene delivery vectors decorated with T7 segment for binding the transferrin (Tf) receptors which were highly expressed on brain tumor cells, and evaluated their ability of gene delivery. The physicochemical properties of peptide vectors or peptide/DNA complexes were studied as well. The in vitro transfection efficiency was investigated in normal and glioma cell lines. Among these complexes, PT-02/DNA complexes showed the highest transfection efficiency in glioma cells and low cytotoxicity in normal cell lines, and it could transport DNA across the BBB model in vitro . Furthermore, PT-02/DNA could deliver pIRES2-EGFP into the brain site of zebrafish in vivo . The designed peptide vectors offered a promising way for glioma gene therapy.

Endoscopes are ubiquitous in minimally invasive or keyhole surgeries globally. However, frequent removal of endoscopes from the patient's body due to the lens contaminations results in undesirable consequences. Therefore, a cost-effective process chain to fabricate thermoplastic-based endoscope lenses with superior antifouling and optical properties is proposed in this research. Such multifunctional surface response was achieved by lubricant impregnation of nanostructures. Two types of topographies were produced by femtosecond laser processing of metallic molds, especially to produce single-tier laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) and two-tier multiscale structures (MS). Then, these two LIPSS and MS masters were used to replicate them onto two thermoplastic substrates, namely polycarbonate and cyclic olefin copolymer, by using hot embossing. Finally, the LIPSS and MS surfaces of the replicas were infiltrated by silicone oils to prepare lubricant-impregnated surfaces (LIS). Droplet sliding tests revealed that the durability of the as-prepared LIS improved with the increase of the lubricant viscosity. Moreover, the single-tier LIPSS replicas exhibited longer-lasting lubricant conservation properties than the MS ones. Also, LIPSS-LIS replicas demonstrated an excellent optical transparency, better than the MS-LIS ones, and almost match the performance of the reference polished ones. Furthermore, the LIPSS-LIS treatment led to superior antifouling characteristics, i.e., regarding fogging, blood adhesion, protein adsorption, and microalgae attachment, and thus demonstrated its high suitability for treating endoscopic lenses. Finally, a proof-of-concept LIPSS-LIS treatment of endoscope lenses was conducted that confirmed their superior multifunctional response.
