Nanotechnology has gained popularity in recent years due to its wide-ranging applications within the scientific community. The three main methods for synthesizing nanoparticles are physical, chemical, and biological. However, the adverse effects associated with physical and chemical methods have led to a growing interest in biological methods. Interestingly, green synthesis using plants has gained prominence in developing new treatments for bacterial infections. Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) produced using environmentally friendly methods are more biocompatible and have potential applications as antibacterial agents in the biomedical field. As a result, this review discusses the green synthesis of ZnO NPs, factors influencing optimal synthesis, characterization techniques, and the antibacterial activity of some plant-mediated ZnO NPs. It also provides a comprehensive and analytical exploration of ZnO NP biosynthesis, the role of phytochemical compounds as reducing and stabilizing agents, the mechanism of action of their antibacterial properties and further highlights the challenges and prospects in this innovative research area.

Breast cancer, a widespread malignancy affecting women globally, often arises from mutations in estrogen/progesterone receptors. Conventional treatments like surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy face limitations such as low efficacy and adverse effects. However, nanotechnology offers promise with its unique attributes like targeted delivery and controlled drug release. Yet, challenges like poor size distribution and environmental concerns exist. Biogenic nanotechnology, using natural materials or living cells, is gaining traction for its safety and efficacy in cancer treatment. Biogenic nanoparticles synthesized from plant extracts offer a sustainable and eco-friendly approach, demonstrating significant toxicity against breast cancer cells while sparing healthy ones. They surpass traditional drugs, providing benefits like biocompatibility and targeted delivery. Thus, this current review summarizes the available knowledge on breast cancer (its types, stages, histopathology, symptoms, etiology and epidemiology) with the importance of using biogenic nanomaterials as a new and improved therapy. The novelty of this work lies in its comprehensive examination of the challenges and strategies for advancing the industrial utilization of biogenic metal and metal oxide NPs. Additionally; it underscores the potential of plant-mediated synthesis of biogenic NPs as effective therapies for breast cancer, detailing their mechanisms of action, advantages, and areas for further research., (© 2024. This study investigated the in vitro bioaccessibility of aluminum, copper, iron, manganese, lead, selenium, and zinc in three important species of farmed insects: the yellow mealworm (Tenebrio molitor), the house cricket (Acheta domesticus) and the migratory locust (Locusta migratoria). Results show that all three insect species constitute excellent sources of essential elements (Fe, Cu and Zn) for the human diet, contributing to the recommended dietary allowance, i.e., 10%, 50%, and 92%, respectively. A higher accumulation of Se (≥1.4 mg Se/kg) was observed with increasing exposure concentration in A. domesticus, showing the possibility of using insects as a supplements for this element. The presence of Al and Fe nanoparticles was confirmed in all three species using single particle-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry and transmission electron microscopy. The results also indicate that Fe bioaccessibility declines with increasing Fe-nanoparticle concentration. Cadmium (Cd) is an extremely toxic heavy metal that can originate from industrial activities and accumulate in agricultural soils. This study investigates the potential of biologically synthesized silicon oxide nanoparticles (Bio-SiNPs) in alleviating Cd toxicity in bayberry plants. Bio-SiNPs were synthesized using the bacterial strain Chryseobacterium sp. RTN3 and thoroughly characterized using advanced techniques. A pot experiment results demonstrated that Cd stress substantially reduced leaves biomass, photosynthesis efficiency, antioxidant enzyme activity, and induced oxidative damage in bayberry (Myrica rubra) plants. However, Bio-SiNPs application at 200 mg kg -1 significantly enhanced plant biomass, chlorophyll content (26.4 %), net photosynthetic rate (8.6 %), antioxidant enzyme levels, and mitigated reactive oxygen species production under Cd stress. Bio-SiNPs modulated key stress-related phytohormones by increasing salicylic acid (13.2 %) and abscisic acid (13.7 %) contents in plants. Bio-SiNPs augmented Si deposition on root surfaces, preserving normal ultrastructure in leaf cells. Additionally, 16S rRNA gene sequencing demonstrated that Bio-SiNPs treatment favorably reshaped structure and abundance of specific bacterial groups (Proteobacteria, Actinobacteriota, and Acidobacteriota) in the rhizosphere. Notably, Bio-SiNPs application significantly modulated the key metabolites (phenylacetaldehyde, glycitein, maslinic acid and methylmalonic acid) under both normal and Cd stress conditions. Background: Antimicrobial resistance has surged due to widespread antimicrobial drug use, prompting interest in biosynthesizing nanoparticles from marine-derived actinomycetes extracellular metabolites, valued for their diverse bioactive compounds. This approach holds promise for addressing the urgent need for novel antimicrobial agents. The current study aimed to characterize novel bioactive compounds from unexplored biodiversity hotspots, halophilic Streptomyces sp. isolated from mangrove sediment in the Pichavaram region, India., Methods and Results: Streptomyces rochei SSCM102 was conclusively identified through morphological and molecular characterization. Synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) from Streptomyces rochei SSCM102 was characterized using various techniques, including UV-Vis, XRD, SEM, EDX, and FT-IR. The UV-Vis spectrum of the reduced AgNPs exhibited a prominent peak at 380 nm, confirming the AgNPs. The UV-Vis spectrum confirmed the synthesis of AgNP, and SEM analysis revealed a cubic morphology with sizes ranging from 11 to 21 nm. The FTIR spectrum demonstrated a shift in frequency widths between 626 cm -1 and 3432 cm -1 . The EDX analysis substantiated the presence of metallic silver, evident from a strong band at 1.44 keV. The synthesized AgNPs exhibited antibacterial efficacy against human pathogens Escherichia coli (64 ± 0.32 µg/ml), Klebsiella pneumoniae (32 ± 0.16 µg/ml), and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (16 ± 0.08 µg/ml) by MIC and MBC values of 128 ± 0.64 (µg/ml), 64 ± 0.32 (µg/ml) and 32 ± 0.16 (µg/ml), respectively. Additionally, at a concentration of 400 µg/ml, the AgNPs displayed a 72% inhibition of DPPH radicals, indicating notable antioxidant capacity. The LC 50 value of 130 µg/mL indicates that the green-synthesized AgNPs have lower toxicity by Brine Shrimp Larvae assay., Conclusion: The study's novel approach to synthesizing eco-friendly silver nanoparticles using Halophilic Streptomyces rochei SSCM102 contributes significantly to the field of biomedical research and drug development. Resistance to antibiotics and antimicrobial compounds is a significant problem for human and animal health globally. The development and introduction of new antimicrobial compounds are urgently needed, and copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) have found widespread application across various sectors including biomedicine, pharmacy, catalysis, cosmetics, and many others. What makes them particularly attractive is the possibility of their synthesis through biogenic routes. In this study, we synthesized biogenic green tea (GT, Camellia sinensis )-derived CuO NPs (GT CuO NPs) and examined their biophysical properties, in vitro toxicity for mammalian cells in culture, and then tested them against Neisseria gonorrhoeae , an exemplar Gram-negative bacterium from the World Health Organization's Priority Pathogen List. We compared our synthesized GT CuOP NPs with commercial CuO NPs (Com CuO NPs). Com CuO NPs were significantly more cytotoxic to mammalian cells (IC50 of 7.32 μg/mL) than GT CuO NPs (IC50 of 106.1 μg/mL). GT CuO NPs showed no significant increase in bax, bcl2, il6 , and il1β mRNA expression from mammalian cells, whereas there were notable rises after treatment with Com CuO NPs. GT-CuO NPs required concentrations of 0.625 and 3.125 μg/mL to kill 50 and 100% of bacteria, respectively, whereas Com-CuO NPs needed concentrations of 15.625 and 30 μg/mL to kill 50 and 100% of bacteria, and the antibiotic ceftriaxone killed 50 and 100% with 3.125 and 30 μg/mL. Gonococci could be killed within 30 min of exposure to GT CuO NPs and the NPs could kill up to 10 7 within 1 h. In summary, this is the first report to our knowledge that describes the bioactivity of biogenic CuO NPs against N. gonorrhoeae . Our data suggest that biogenic nanoparticle synthesis has significant advantages over traditional chemical routes of synthesis and highlights the potential of GT-CuO NPs in addressing the challenges posed by multidrug-resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae infections.

Ground-level ozone (O 3 ) is the most phytotoxic secondary air pollutant in the atmosphere, severely affecting crop yields worldwide. The role of nanoparticles (NP) in the alleviation of ozone-induced yield losses in crops is not known. Therefore, in the present study, we investigated the effects of biogenicB-AgNPs on the mitigation of ozone-induced phytotoxicity in mung bean and compared its results with ethylenediurea (EDU) for the first time. Two mung bean cultivars (Vigna radiata L., Cv. SML-668 and PDM-139) were foliar sprayed with weekly applications of B-AgNPs (0 = control, 10 and 25 ppm) and EDU (0 = control, 200 and 300 ppm) until maturation phase. Morphological, physiological, enzymatic, and non-enzymatic antioxidant data were collected 30 and 60 days after germination (DAG). The mean O 3 and AOT40 values (8 h day -1 ) during the cultivation period were approximately 52 ppb and 4.4 ppm.h, respectively. More biomass was accumulated at the vegetative phase due to the impact of B-AgNPs and EDU, and more photosynthates were transported to the reproductive phase, increasing yield. We observed that the 10 ppm B-AgNPs treatment had a more noticeable impact on yield parameters and lower Ag accumulation in seeds for both cultivars. Specifically, SML-668 cultivar treated with 10 ppm B-AgNPs (SN 1 ) showed greater increases in seed weight plant -1 (124.97%), hundred seed weight (33.45%), and harvest index (37.53%) in comparison to control. Our findings suggest that B-AgNPs can enhance growth, biomass, yield, and seed quality, and can improve mung bean ozone tolerance. One of the most widespread metabolic diseases, Type-2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is defined by high blood sugar levels brought on by decreased insulin secretion, reduced insulin action, or both. Due to its cost-effectiveness and eco-friendliness, plant-mediated green synthesis of nanomaterials has become more and more popular. The aim of the study is to synthesize AgNPs, their characterizations and further in-vitro and in-vivo studies. Several methods were used to morphologically characterise the AgNPs. The AgNPs were crystalline, spherical, and clustered, with sizes ranging from 20 to 50 nm. AgNPs were found to contain various functional groups using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. This study focuses on the green-synthesis of AgNPs from Fagonia cretica ( F. cretica ) leaves extract to evaluate their synthesized AgNPs for in-vitro and in-vivo anti-diabetic function. For the in-vivo tests, 20 male Balb/C albino-mice were split up into four different groups. Anti-diabetic in-vivo studies showed significant weight gain and a decrease in all biochemical markers (pancreas panel, liver function panel, renal function panel, and lipid profile) in Streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic mice. In vitro anti-diabetic investigations were also conducted on AgNPs, comprising α-amylase, α-glucosidase inhibitions, and antioxidant assays. AgNPs showed antioxidant activity in both the DPPH and ABTS assays. Heavy metals in a polluted environment are toxic to life. However, some microorganisms can remove or immobilize heavy metals through biomineralization. These bacteria also form minerals with compositions similar to those of semiconductors. Here, this bioprocess was used to fabricate semiconductors with low energy consumption and cost. Bacteria that form lead sulfide (PbS) nanoparticles were screened, and the crystallinity and semiconductor properties of the resulting nanoparticles were characterized. Bacterial consortia that formed PbS nanoparticles were obtained. Extracellular particle size ranged from 3.9 to 5.5 nm, and lattice fringes were observed. The lattice fringes and electron diffraction spectra corresponded to crystalline PbS. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns of bacterial PbS exhibited clear diffraction peaks. The experimental and theoretical data of the diffraction angles on each crystal plane of polycrystalline PbS were in good agreement. Synchrotron XRD measurements showed no crystalline impurity-derived peaks. Thus, bacterial biomineralization can form ultrafine crystalline PbS nanoparticles. Optical absorption and current-voltage measurements of PbS were obtained to characterize the semiconductor properties; the results showed semiconductor quantum dot behavior. Moreover, the current increased under light irradiation when PbS nanoparticles were used. These results suggest that biogenic PbS has band gaps and exhibits the general fundamental characteristics of a semiconductor.

Nanotechnology is a continually growing field with a wide range of applications from food science to biotechnology and nanobiotechnology. As the current world is grappling with non-biodegradable waste, considered more challenging and expensive to dispose of than biodegradable waste, new technologies are needed today more than ever. Modern technologies, especially nanotechnology, can transform biodegradable waste into products for human use. Researchers are exploring sustainable pathways for nanotechnology by utilizing biodegradable waste as a source for preparing nanomaterials. Over the past ten years, the biogenic production of metallic nanoparticles (NPs) has become a promising alternative technique to traditional NPs synthesis due to its simplicity, eco-friendliness, and biocompatibility in nature. Fruit and vegetable waste (after industrial processing) contain various bioactives (such as flavonoids, phenols, tannins, steroids, triterpenoids, glycosides, anthocyanins, carotenoids, ellagitannins, vitamin C, and essential oils) serving as reducing and capping agents for NP synthesis and they possess antibacterial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties. This review addresses various sources of biogenic NPs including their synthesis using fruit/vegetable waste, types of biogenic NPs, extraction processes and extracted biomaterials, the pharmacological functionality of NPs, industrial aspects, and future perspectives. Introduction: Plant pathogenic microorganisms adversely affect the growth and yield of crops, which consequently leads to losses in food production. Metal-based nanoparticles (MNPs) can be a remedy to solve this problem. Methods: Novel silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) were biosynthesized from Fusarium solani IOR 825 and characterized using Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and measurement of Zeta potential. Antibacterial activity of NPs was evaluated against four plant pathogenic strains by determination of the minimum inhibitory (MIC) and biocidal concentrations (MBC). Micro-broth dilution method and poisoned food technique were used to assess antifungal activity of NPs against a set of plant pathogens. Effect of nanopriming with both types of MNPs on maize seed germination and seedlings growth was evaluated at a concentration range of 1-256 μg mL -1 . Results: Mycosynthesis of MNPs provided small (8.27 nm), spherical and stable (zeta potential of -17.08 mV) AgNPs with good crystallinity. Similarly, ZnONPs synthesized by using two different methods (ZnONPs(1) and ZnONPs(2)) were larger in size (117.79 and 175.12 nm, respectively) with Zeta potential at -9.39 and -21.81 mV, respectively. The FTIR spectra showed the functional groups (hydroxyl, amino, and carboxyl) of the capping molecules on the surface of MNPs. The values of MIC and MBC of AgNPs against bacteria ranged from 8 to 256 μg mL -1 and from 512 to 1024 μg mL -1 , respectively. Both types of ZnONPs displayed antibacterial activity at 256-1024 μg mL -1 (MIC) and 512-2048 μg mL -1 (MBC), but in the concentration range tested, they revealed no activity against Pectobacterium carotovorum . Moreover, AgNPs and ZnONPs inhibited the mycelial growth of Alternaria alternata, Fusarium culmorum, Fusarium oxysporum, Phoma lingam, and Sclerotinia sclerotiorum . MIC and MFC values of AgNPs ranged from 16-128 and 16-2048 μg mL -1 , respectively. ZnONPs showed antifungal activity with MIC and MFC values of 128-2048 μg mL -1 and 256-2048 μg mL -1 , respectively. The AgNPs at a concentration of ≥32 μg mL -1 revealed sterilization effect on maize seeds while ZnONPs demonstrated stimulatory effect on seedlings growth at concentrations of ≥16 μg mL -1 by improving the fresh and dry biomass production by 24% and 18%-19%, respectively. Discussion: AgNPs and ZnONPs mycosynthesized from F. solani IOR 825 could be applied in agriculture to prevent the spread of pathogens. However, further toxicity assays should be performed before field evaluation. Therapeutic moieties derived from medicinal plants as well as plants-based ecofriendly processes for producing selenium nanoparticles have shown great promise in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The current study was aimed to assess the anti-diabetic potentials of Fagonia cretica mediated biogenic selenium nanoparticles (FcSeNPs) using in-vitro and in-vivo approaches. The bio-synthesized FcSeNPs were characterized using various techniques including UV-VIS spectrophotometry and FTIR analysis. The in-vitro efficacy of FcSeNPs were assessed against α-glucosidase, α-amylase enzymes as well as the anti-radical studies were performed using DPPH and ABTS free radicals scavenging assays. For in-vivo studies, 20 Male Balb/C albino-mice were randomly divided into 4 groups (n = 5) including normal group, disease group (Diabetic group with no treatment), control group and treatment group (Diabetic group treated with FcSeNPs). Further, biochemistry markers including pancreas, liver, kidney and lipid profile were assessed for all treatment groups. The FcSeNPs exhibited a dose-dependent inhibition against α-amylase and α-glucosidase at 62-1000 µg mL -1 concentration with IC 50 values of 92 and 100 µg mL -1 respectively. In antioxidant experiments, the FcSeNPs demonstrated significant radicals scavenging effect against DPPH and ABTS radicals. In STZ-induced diabetic mice, a considerable decline in blood glucose level was observed after treatment with FcSeNPs. Anti-hyperglycemic effect of FcSeNPs treated animals were high (105 ± 3.22**) as compared to standard drug (128.6 ± 2.73** mg dL -1 ). Biochemical investigations revealed that all biochemical parameters for pancreas, liver function, renal function panel and lipid profile were significantly lowered in FcSeNPs treated animals. Schistosomiasis is one of the most important neglected tropical diseases in Africa, caused by blood fluke, Schistosoma sp. The use of nanotechnology in the treatment of this type of disease is urgently important to avoid the unwanted side effects of chemotherapy. The present study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of green silver nanoparticles (G-AgNPs), fabricated by (Calotropis procera), comparing with both chemically prepared silver ones (C-AgNPs) and Praziquantel (PZQ) treatments. The study included in vitro and in vivo evaluations. In in vitro study, 4 groups of schistosome worms were exposed to treatments as follows: the first one with a dose of PZQ (0.2 µg/ml), the 2nd and 3rd groups with different concentrations of G-AgNPs and C-AgNPs, respectively and the last one act as a negative control group. In in vivo study, six groups of mice were infected and then treated as follows: the first one with a dose of PZQ, the second with G-AgNPs, the third with C-AgNPs, the fourth with G-AgNPs plus a half dose of PZQ, the fifth with C-AgNPs accompanied by a half dose of PZQ, and the last group acted as a positive control group. The parasitological (worm burden, egg count & oogram) and histopathological parameters (hepatic granuloma profile) were used to evaluate antischistosomal activities in experimental groups. Additionally, the subsequent ultrastructural alterations were observed in adult worms using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Transmission electron microscopy analysis showed that G-AgNPs and C-AgNPs have 8-25 and 8-11 nm in diameter, respectively, besides, fourier transform infrared analysis (FTIR) revealed the presence of organic compounds (aromatic ring groups) which act as capping agents around the surfaces of biogenic silver nanoparticles. In in vitro experiment, adult worms incubated either with G-AgNPs or C-AgNPs at concentrations higher than 100 µg/ml or 80 µg/ml, respectively, showed full mortality of parasites after 24 h. In the infected treated groups (with G-AgNPs plus PZQ & C-AgNPs plus PZQ) showed the most significant reduction in the total worm burdens (92.17% & 90.52%, respectively). Combined treatment with C-AgNPs and PZQ showed the highest value of dead eggs (93,6%), followed by G-AgNPs plus PZQ-treated one (91%). This study showed that mice treated with G-AgNPs plus PZQ significantly has the highest percentage of reduction in granuloma size and count (64.59%, 70.14%, respectively). Both G-AgNPs plus PZQ-treated & C-AgNPs plus PZQ treated groups showed the highest similar values of reduction percentage of total ova count in tissues (98.90% & 98.62%, respectively). Metal/metal oxide nano systems (M-NSs) of tunable and manipulative properties are emerging suitable for cancer management via immunity development, early-stage diagnosis, nanotherapeutics, and targeted drug delivery systems. However, noticeable toxicity, off-targeted actions, lacking biocompatibility, and being expensive limit their acceptability. Moreover, involving high energy (top-down routes) and hazardous chemicals (bottom-up chemical routes) is altering human cycle. To manage such challenges, biomass (plants, microbes, animals) and green chemistry-based M-NSs due to scalability, affordability, are cellular, tissue, and organ acceptability are emerging as desired biogenic M-NSs for cancer management with enhanced features. The state-of-art and perspective of green metal/metal oxide nano systems (GM-NSs) as an efficient anti-cancer agent including, imaging, immunity building elements, site-specific drug delivery, and therapeutics developments are highlighted in this review critically. Nanotechnology has become one of the most rapid, innovative, and adaptable sciences in modern science and cancer therapy. Traditional chemotherapy has limits owing to its non-specific nature and adverse side effects on healthy cells, and it remains a serious worldwide health issue. Because of their capacity to specifically target cancer cells and deliver therapeutic chemicals directly to them, nanoparticles have emerged as a viable strategy for cancer therapies. Nanomaterials disclose novel properties based on size, distribution, and shape. Biosynthesized or biogenic nanoparticles are a novel technique with anti-cancer capabilities, such as triggering apoptosis in cancer cells and slowing tumour growth. They may be configured to deliver medications or other therapies to specific cancer cells or tumour markers. Despite their potential, biosynthesized nanoparticles confront development obstacles such as a lack of standardisation in their synthesis and characterization, the possibility of toxicity, and their efficiency against various forms of cancer. The effectiveness and safety of biosynthesized nanoparticles must be further investigated, as well as the types of cancer they are most successful against. The use of cadmium sulfide nanoparticles (CdS-NPs) synthesized by fungi presents highly stable chemical and optical characteristics; this makes them a promising alternative for development of colorimetric methods for metal detection. Moreover, application of CdS-NPs is challenging due to the biological material used to carry out synthesis and coating is highly diverse; therefore, it is necessary to evaluate if such components are present in the biological material. Thus, the objective of this work was to detect metallic ions in synthetic water samples using CdS-NPs synthesized by the extract of Aspergillus niger. The conditions to produce fungal extracts were determined through a factorial design 2 3 ; additionally, biomolecules involved in metallic ions detection, synthesis, and coating of CdS-NPs were quantified; the studied biomolecules are NADH, sulfhydryl groups, proteins, and ferric reducing antioxidants (FRAP). CdS-NPs synthesized in this study were characterized by spectrophotometry, zeta potential, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). Finally, detection capacity of metallic ions in synthetic water samples was evaluated. It was proved that the methanolic extract of Aspergillus niger obtained under established conditions has the necessary components for both synthesis and coating of CdS-NPs, as well as detection of metallic ions because it was possible to synthesize CdS-NPs with a hexagonal crystalline structure with a length of 2.56 ± 0.50 nm which were able to detect Pb 2+ , Cr 6+ , and Fe 3+ at pH 4 and Co 2+ at pH 8., (© 2023. The present study examined the biosynthesis and characterization of selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) using two contrasting endophytic selenobacteria, one Gram-positive ( Bacillus sp. E5 identified as Bacillus paranthracis ) and one Gram-negative ( Enterobacter sp. EC5.2 identified as Enterobacter ludwigi ), for further use as biofortifying agents and/or for other biotechnological purposes. We demonstrated that, upon regulating culture conditions and selenite exposure time, both strains were suitable "cell factories" for producing SeNPs (B-SeNPs from B. paranthracis and E-SeNPs from E. ludwigii ) with different properties. Briefly, dynamic light scattering (DLS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM) studies revealed that intracellular E-SeNPs (56.23 ± 4.85 nm) were smaller in diameter than B-SeNPs (83.44 ± 2.90 nm) and that both formulations were located in the surrounding medium or bound to the cell wall. AFM images indicated the absence of relevant variations in bacterial volume and shape and revealed the existence of layers of peptidoglycan surrounding the bacterial cell wall under the conditions of biosynthesis, particularly in the case of B. paranthracis . Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) showed that SeNPs were surrounded by the proteins, lipids, and polysaccharides of bacterial cells and that the numbers of the functional groups present in B-SeNPs were higher than in E-SeNPs. Thus, considering that these findings support the suitability of these two endophytic stains as potential biocatalysts to produce high-quality Se-based nanoparticles, our future efforts must be focused on the evaluation of their bioactivity, as well as on the determination of how the different features of each SeNP modulate their biological action and their stability.

Oxide and chalcogenide nanoparticles have great potential for use in biomedicine, engineering, agriculture, environmental protection, and other research fields. The myco-synthesis of nanoparticles with fungal cultures, their metabolites, culture liquids, and mycelial and fruit body extracts is simple, cheap and environmentally friendly. The characteristics of nanoparticles, including their size, shape, homogeneity, stability, physical properties and biological activity, can be tuned by changing the myco-synthesis conditions. This review summarizes the data on the diversity of oxide and chalcogenide nanoparticles produced by various fungal species under different experimental conditions.

In this study, we synthesized, characterized, and explored the anti-microbial and anti-cancer effects of albumin-chlorogenic acid nanoparticles (NPs). Characterization studies with a UV-vis spectrophotometer, FTIR, PL spectrum, TEM, FESEM, XRD, and DLA analysis showed patterns confirming the physio-chemical nature of biogenic nanocomposites. Further, anti-microbial studies using bacterial strains Staphylococcus aureus , Streptococcus pneumonia , Bacillus subtilis , Escherichia coli , Pseudomonas aeruginosa , Vibrio cholera , and fungal strain Candida albicans showed significant ( p < 0.05) anti-bacterial and anti-fungal activities. Next, we used MDA-MB-435s, a human cell line, to evaluate the anti-cancer effects of albumin-chlorogenic acid NPs. Cytotoxic studies revealed its IC50 concentration at 24 μg/mL after a 24 h treatment of MDA-MB-435s cells. We chose this IC50 dose to analyze albumin-chlorogenic acid NPs anti-cancer effects in vitro. MDA-MB-435s cells exposed to our NPs were studied via AO/EtBr staining, cell cycle analyses via PI staining, the status of whole genomic damage via comet assay, levels of apoptotic cells via annexin V/PI staining, ROS generation via DCFH-DA staining, an assay of antioxidant enzymes catalase, superoxide dismutase, and antioxidant GSH, via ELISA analyses of apoptotic markers caspase-3, 8, 9, Bax, Bcl-2, CytC, and p53, PI3/AKT/mTOR pathway. Our results collectively showed albumin-chlorogenic acid NPs induced apoptosis via p53-dependent and PI3/AKT/mTOR inhibition in MDA-MB-435s cells. Our results denote albumin-chlorogenic acid NPs can be used as an effective candidate for anti-microbial and anti-cancer applications; however, further in vivo confirmatory studies are warranted.

The biosynthesis of nanoparticles using green technology is emerging as a cost-efficient, eco-friendly and risk-free strategy in nanotechnology. Recently, tellurium nanoparticles (TeNPs) have attracted growing attention due to their unique properties in biomedicine, electronics, and other industrial applications. The current investigation addresses the green synthesis of TeNPs using a newly isolated mangrove-associated bacterium, Gayadomonas sp. TNPM15, and their impact on the phytopathogenic fungi Fusarium oxysporum and Alternaria alternata . The biogenic TeNPs were characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR). The results of TEM revealed the intracellular biosynthesis of rod-shaped nanostructures with a diameter range from 15 to 23 nm and different lengths reaching up to 243 nm. Furthermore, the successful formation of tellurium nanorods was verified by SEM-EDX, and the XRD pattern revealed their crystallinity. In addition, the FTIR spectrum provided evidence for the presence of proteinaceous capping agents. The bioinspired TeNPs exhibited obvious inhibitory effect on the spores of both investigated phytopathogens accomplished with prominent ultrastructure alternations, as evidenced by TEM observations. The biogenic TeNPs impeded spore germination of F. oxysporum and A. alternata completely at 48.1 and 27.6 µg/mL, respectively. Furthermore, an increase in DNA and protein leakage was observed upon exposure of fungal spores to the biogenic TeNPs, indicating the disruption of membrane permeability and integrity. Besides their potent influence on fungal spores, the biogenic TeNPs demonstrated remarkable inhibitory effects on the production of various plant cell wall-degrading enzymes. Moreover, the cytotoxicity investigations revealed the biocompatibility of the as-prepared biogenic TeNPs and their low toxicity against the human skin fibroblast (HSF) cell line. The biogenic TeNPs showed no significant cytotoxic effect towards HSF cells at concentrations up to 80 μg/mL, with a half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC 50 ) value of 125 μg/mL. The present work spotlights the antifungal potential of the biogenic TeNPs produced by marine bacterium against phytopathogenic fungi as a promising candidate to combat fungal infections.

The use of nanofabricated materials is being explored for the potential in crop disease management. Chemically synthesized micronutrient nanoparticles (NPs) have been shown to reduce crop diseases; however, the potential of biogenic manganese NPs (bio-MnNPs) in disease control is unknown. Here, the potential and mechanism of bio-MnNPs in suppression of watermelon Fusarium wilt, caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. niveum (Fon) are reported. Bio-MnNPs are synthesized by cell-free cultural filtrate of a waterrmelon rhizosphere bacterial strain Bacillus megaterium NOM14, and are found spherical in shape with a size range of 27.0-65.7 nm. Application of bio-MnNPs at 100 µg mL -1 increases Mn content in watermelon roots/shoots and improves growth performance through enhancing multiple physiological processes, including antioxidative capacity. Bio-MnNPs at 100 µg mL -1 suppress Fusarium wilt through inhibiting colonization and invasive growth of Fon in watermelon roots/stems, and inhibit Fon vegetative growth, conidiation, conidial morphology, and cellular integrity. Bio-MnNPs potentiate watermelon systemic acquired resistance by triggering the salicylic acid signaling upon Fon infection, and reshape the soil microbial community by improving fungal diversity. Fungi are very promising biological objects for the green synthesis of nanoparticles. Biogenic synthesis of nanoparticles using different mycological cultures and substances obtained from them is a promising, easy and environmentally friendly method. By varying the synthesis conditions, the same culture can be used to produce nanoparticles with different sizes, shapes, stability in colloids and, therefore, different biological activity. Fungi are capable of producing a wide range of biologically active compounds and have a powerful enzymatic system that allows them to form nanoparticles of various chemical elements. This review attempts to summarize and provide a comparative analysis of the currently accumulated data, including, among others, our research group's works, on the variety of the characteristics of the nanoparticles produced by various fungal species, their mycelium, fruiting bodies, extracts and purified fungal metabolites.

In this study, the potential of biogenic zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) in the removal of alizarin yellow R (AY) from aqueous solutions by photocatalytic degradation, as well as adsorption, was investigated. The synthesized ZnO NPs were prepared by the simple wet-combustion method using the plant extract of Serratula coronata L. as a reducing and stabilizing agent and characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Photocatalytic degradation of AY was monitored by UV-visible spectroscopy and the effects of parameters, such as light source type (UV-, visible- and sunlight), incubation time, pH, catalyst dosage and temperature on degradation were investigated. It was demonstrated that the source of light plays an important role in the efficiency of the reaction and the UV-assisted degradation of AY was the most effective, compared to the others. The degradation reaction of AY was found to follow the Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism and a pseudo-first-order kinetic model. The degradation kinetics of AY accelerated with increasing temperature, and the lowest activation energy ( E a ) was calculated as 3.4 kJ/mol for the UV-light irradiation system, while the E a values were 4.18 and 7.37 kJ/mol for visible light and sunlight, respectively. The dye removal by the adsorption process was also affected by several parameters, such as pH, sorbent amount and contact time. The data obtained in the kinetics study fit the pseudo-second-order equation best model and the rate constant was calculated as 0.001 g/mg·min. The isotherm analysis indicated that the equilibrium data fit well with the Freundlich isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacity of AY on biogenic ZnO NPs was 5.34 mg/g.

Nanotechnology-driven solutions have almost touched every aspect of life, such as therapeutics, cosmetics, agriculture, and the environment. Physical and chemical methods for the synthesis of nanoparticles involve hazardous reaction conditions and toxic reducing as well as stabilizing agents. Hence, environmentally benign green routes are preferred to synthesize nanoparticles with tunable size and shape. Bacteria, fungi, algae, and medicinal plants are employed to synthesize gold, silver, copper, zinc, and other nanoparticles. However, very little literature is available on exploring probiotic bacteria for the synthesis of nanoparticles. In view of the background, this review gives the most comprehensive report on the nanobiotechnological potential of probiotic bacteria like Bacillus licheniformis, Bifidobacterium animalis, Brevibacterium linens, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus casei, and others for the synthesis of gold (AuNPs), selenium (SeNPs), silver (AgNPs), platinum (PtNPs), tellurium nanoparticles (TeNPs), zinc oxide (ZnONPs), copper oxide (CuONPs), iron oxide (Fe 3 O 4 NPs), and titanium oxide nanoparticles (TiO 2 NPs). Both intracellular and extracellular synthesis are involved as potential routes for biofabrication of polydispersed nanoparticles that are spherical, rod, or hexagonal in shape. Capsular exopolysaccharide associated carbohydrates such as galactose, glucose, mannose, and rhamnose, cell membrane-associated diglycosyldiacylglycerol (DGDG), 1,2-di-O-acyl-3-O-[O-α-D-galactopyranosyl-(1 → 2)-α-d-glucopyranosyl]glycerol, triglycosyl diacylglycerol (TGDG), NADH-dependent enzymes, amino acids such as cysteine, tyrosine, and tryptophan, S-layer proteins (SLP), lacto-N-triose, and lactic acid play a significant role in synthesis and stabilization of the nanoparticles. The biogenic nanoparticles can be recovered by rational treatment with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and/or sodium hydroxide (NaOH). Eventually, diverse applications like antibacterial, antifungal, anticancer, antioxidant, and other associated activities of the bacteriogenic nanoparticles are also elaborated. In the present study, a facile, eco-friendly, and controlled synthesis of gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) using Prunus nepalensis fruit extract is reported. The biogenically synthesized Au NPs possess ultra-active intrinsic peroxidase-like activity for the oxidation of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) in the presence of H 2 O 2 . Chemical analysis of the fruit extract demonstrated the presence of various bioactive molecules such as amino acids (l-alanine and aspartic acids), organic acids (benzoic acid and citric acid), sugars (arabinose and glucose), phenolic acid, and bioflavonoids (niacin and myo-inositol), which likely attributed to the formation of stable biogenic Au NPs with excellent peroxidase-mimicking activity. In comparison with the natural horseradish peroxidase (HRP) enzyme, the biogenic Au NPs displayed a 9.64 times higher activity with regard to the reaction velocity at 6% (v/v) H 2 O 2 , presenting a higher affinity toward the TMB substrate. The Michaelis-Menten constant ( K M ) values for the biogenic Au NPs and HRP were found to be 6.9 × 10 -2 and 7.9 × 10 -2 mM, respectively, at the same concentration of 100 pM. To investigate its applicability for biosensing, a monoclonal antibody specific for Mycobacterium bovis (QUBMA-Bov) was directly conjugated to the surface of the biogenic Au NPs. The obtained results indicate that the biogenic Au NPs-QUBMA-Bov conjugates are capable of detecting M. bovis based on a colorimetric immunosensing method within a lower range of 10 0 to 10 2 cfu mL -1 with limits of detection of ∼53 and ∼71 cfu mL -1 in an artificial buffer solution and in a soft cheese spiked sample, respectively. This strategy demonstrates decent specificity in comparison with those of other bacterial and mycobacterial species. Considering these findings together, this study indicates the potential for the development of a cost-effective biosensing platform with high sensitivity and specificity for the detection of M. bovis using antibody-conjugated Au nanozymes.

Interest in nanomaterials and especially nanoparticles has exploded in the past decades primarily due to their novel or enhanced physical and chemical properties compared to bulk material. These extraordinary properties have created a multitude of innovative applications in the fields of medicine and pharma, electronics, agriculture, chemical catalysis, food industry, and many others. More recently, nanoparticles are also being synthesized 'biologically' through the use of plant- or microorganism-mediated processes, as an environmentally friendly alternative to the expensive, energy-intensive, and potentially toxic physical and chemical synthesis methods. This transdisciplinary approach to nanoparticle synthesis requires that biologists and biotechnologists understand and learn to use the complex methodology needed to properly characterize these processes. This review targets a bio-oriented audience and summarizes the physico-chemical properties of nanoparticles, and methods used for their characterization. It highlights why nanomaterials are different compared to micro- or bulk materials. We try to provide a comprehensive overview of the different classes of nanoparticles and their novel or enhanced physicochemical properties including mechanical, thermal, magnetic, electronic, optical, and catalytic properties. A comprehensive list of the common methods and techniques used for the characterization and analysis of these properties is presented together with a large list of examples for biogenic nanoparticles that have been previously synthesized and characterized, including their application in the fields of medicine, electronics, agriculture, and food production. Biosynthesis of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) for antimicrobial and chemotherapeutic applications is a well-established process in microbial hosts such as bacterial, fungi, and plants. However, reports on AuNPs biosynthesis in mammalian cells are scarce. In this study, bovine aortic endothelial cells (BAECs) and bovine aortic smooth muscle cells (BASMCs) were examined for their ability to synthesize AuNPs in vitro . Cell culture conditions such as buffer selection, serum concentration, and HAuCl 4 concentration were optimized before the biosynthesized AuNPs were characterized through visible spectrometry, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. BAECs and BASMC produced small, spherical AuNPs that are semi-crystalline with a similar diameter (23 ± 2 nm and 23 ± 4 nm). Hydrogen peroxide pretreatment increased AuNPs synthesis, suggesting that antioxidant enzymes may reduce Au 3+ ions as seen in microbial cells. However, buthionine sulfoximine inhibition of glutathione synthesis, a key regulator of oxidative stress, failed to affect AuNPs generation. The ability of various bacteria to make use of solid substrates through extracellular electron transfer (EET) or extracellular electron uptake (EEU) has enabled the development of valuable biotechnologies such as microbial fuel cells (MFCs) and microbial electrosynthesis (MES). It is common practice to use metallic and semiconductive nanoparticles (NPs) for microbial current enhancement. However, the effect of NPs is highly variable between systems, and there is no clear guideline for effectively increasing the current generation. In the present review, the proposed mechanisms for enhancing current production in MFCs and MES are summarized, and the critical factors for NPs to enhance microbial current generation are discussed. Implications for microbially induced iron corrosion, where iron sulfide NPs are proposed to enhance the rate of EEU, photochemically driven MES, and several future research directions to further enhance microbial current generation, are also discussed., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Ltd. The present work mechanistically addressed the problem of arsenic (As) contamination in agricultural soils by using locally isolated Bacillus sp. strain ZH16 and biogenic molybdenum nanoparticles (MoNPs) simultaneously for the first time. The interactions of MoNPs with strain ZH16 and ZH16-inoculated wheat plants were examined under As non-spiked and spiked conditions. The biogenic MoNPs showed efficient biocompatibility with strain ZH16 by promoting indole-3-acetic acid synthesis, phosphate solubilization and ACC deaminase activity without and with As stress. The results from greenhouse experiment revealed that co-application of biogenic MoNPs and bacterial strain ZH16 significantly promoted the morphological parameters, nutrients content and ionic balance of wheat plants under normal and As spiked conditions. Furthermore, combining the bacterial strain ZH16 with biogenic MoNPs dramatically reduced As translocation in plants (30.3%) as compared to ZH16-inoculated wheat plants. Conclusively, our results elucidate the importance of synergistic application of plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) and biogenic MoNPs to counteract global food safety issues in a sustainable manner. The biogenic NPs could serve as stabilizing agent for PGPR by facilitating their colonization in plant holobiont regardless of environmental conditions. In Africa, medicinal plants have been traditionally used as a source of medicine for centuries. To date, African medicinal plants continue to play a significant role in the treatment of wounds. Chronic wounds are associated with severe healthcare and socio-economic burdens despite the use of conventional therapies. Emergence of novel wound healing strategies using medicinal plants in conjunction with nanotechnology has the potential to develop efficacious wound healing therapeutics with enhanced wound repair mechanisms. This review identified African medicinal plants and biogenic nanoparticles used to promote wound healing through various mechanisms including improved wound contraction and epithelialization as well as antibacterial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. To achieve this, electronic databases such as PubMed, Scifinder ® and Google Scholar were used to search for medicinal plants used by the African populace that were scientifically evaluated for their wound healing activities in both in vitro and in vivo models from 2004 to 2021. Additionally, data on the wound healing mechanisms of biogenic nanoparticles synthesized using African medicinal plants is included herein. The continued scientific evaluation of wound healing African medicinal plants and the development of novel nanomaterials using these plants is imperative in a bid to alleviate the detrimental effects of chronic wounds.

The emergence of infectious diseases promises to be one of the leading mortality factors in the healthcare sector. Although several drugs are available on the market, newly found microorganisms carrying multidrug resistance (MDR) against which existing drugs cannot function effectively, giving rise to escalated antibiotic dosage therapies and the need to develop novel drugs, which require time, money, and manpower. Thus, the exploitation of antimicrobials has led to the production of MDR bacteria, and their prevalence and growth are a major concern. Novel approaches to prevent antimicrobial drug resistance are in practice. Nanotechnology-based innovation provides physicians and patients the opportunity to overcome the crisis of drug resistance. Nanoparticles have promising potential in the healthcare sector. Recently, nanoparticles have been designed to address pathogenic microorganisms. A multitude of processes that can vary with various traits, including size, morphology, electrical charge, and surface coatings, allow researchers to develop novel composite antimicrobial substances for use in different applications performing antimicrobial activities. The antimicrobial activity of inorganic and carbon-based nanoparticles can be applied to various research, medical, and industrial uses in the future and offer a solution to the crisis of antimicrobial resistance to traditional approaches. Metal-based nanoparticles have also been extensively studied for many biomedical applications. In addition to reduced size and selectivity for bacteria, metal-based nanoparticles have proven effective against pathogens listed as a priority, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Moreover, antimicrobial studies of nanoparticles were carried out not only in vitro but in vivo as well in order to investigate their efficacy. In addition, nanomaterials provide numerous opportunities for infection prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and biofilm control. This study emphasizes the antimicrobial effects of nanoparticles and contrasts nanoparticles' with antibiotics' role in the fight against pathogenic microorganisms. Future prospects revolve around developing new strategies and products to prevent, control, and treat microbial infections in humans and other animals, including viral infections seen in the current pandemic scenarios.

Colorectal cancer is a health problem with high mortality rates and prevalence. Thus, innovative treatment approaches need to be developed. Biogenic nanoparticles are nanomaterials that can be synthesised in biological systems and, compared to chemically synthesised nanoparticles, have better bioavailability while being more cost-effective, eco-friendlier, and less toxic. In our previous studies, the probiotic strain Lactobacillus casei ATCC 393 was used to synthesise selenium nanoparticles (SeNps), which were shown to inhibit colon cancer cell growth in vitro and in vivo. Herein, we have further investigated SeNps' pro-apoptotic activity and their ability to induce immunogenic cell death (ICD) in colon cancer cells. The SeNps' effect on Caco-2 cells growth was examined along with their potential to induce caspase activation. Moreover, the expression of typical pro-apoptotic and ICD markers were examined in SeNps-treated HT29 and CT26 cells by flow cytometry, Western blot, ELISA and fluorescence microscopy. Elevated caspase-3 activation and surface phosphatyldoserine, that subsided upon co-incubation with a pan-caspase inhibitor, were detected in SeNps-treated cells. Furthermore, nanoparticles induced modulation of the expression of various apoptosis-related proteins. We also report the detection of biomarkers involved in ICD, namely the translocation of calreticulin and ERp57, the release of HMGB1 and ATP, and the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines from SeNps-treated cells. Moreover, RAW246.7 macrophages exhibited a higher rate of phagocytosis against treated CT26 when compared to control cells. Taken together, our findings indicate that treatment with SeNps might be an efficient strategy to destroy tumour cells by inducing apoptotic cell death and triggering immune responses.

Selenium (Se) respiration in bacteria was revealed for the first time at the end of 1980s. Although thermodynamically-favorable, energy-dense and documented in phylogenetically-diverse bacteria, this metabolic process appears to be accompanied by a number of challenges and numerous unanswered questions. Selenium oxyanions, SeO 4 2- and SeO 3 2- , are reduced to elemental Se (Se 0 ) through anaerobic respiration, the end product being solid and displaying a considerable size (up to 500 nm) at the bacterial scale. Compared to other electron acceptors used in anaerobic respiration (e.g. N, S, Fe, Mn, and As), Se is one of the few elements whose end product is solid. Furthermore, unlike other known bacterial intracellular accumulations such as volutin (inorganic polyphosphate), S 0 , glycogen or magnetite, Se 0 has not been shown to play a nutritional or ecological role for its host. In the context of anaerobic respiration of Se oxyanions, biogenic Se 0 appears to be a by-product, a waste that needs proper handling, and this raises the question of the evolutionary implications of this process. Why would bacteria use a respiratory substrate that is useful, in the first place, and then highly detrimental? Interestingly, in certain artificial ecosystems (e.g. upflow bioreactors) Se 0 might help bacterial cells to increase their density and buoyancy and thus avoid biomass wash-out, ensuring survival. Biogenic nano-hydroxyapatite (bio-nHAP) has recently gained great interest in many domains, especially in the remediation of heavy metal-contaminated soil, due to its high reactivity, low cost, and eco-friendly nature. The co-transport and reaction of bio-nHAP with Pb(II) in saturated porous media, however, are not well understood. This work investigated the effects of ionic strength (IS), ionic composition (IC), dissolved organic matter (DOM), and flow velocity on transport-reaction dynamics of Pb(II) and bio-nHAP by combining column breakthrough experiments and model simulations. Results showed that the mobility of Pb(II) was significantly enhanced with increasing IS/IC but less affected by flow velocity during the transport-reaction process of bio-nHAP and Pb(II) in the saturated sand column; while the transport of bio-nHAP was restricted by increasing IS/IC but facilitated by increasing velocity. IC, IS, and velocity only slightly affected the reaction kinetics between Pb(II) and bio-nHAP, likely due to the fast reaction rate between Pb(II) and bio-nHAP and precipitation of pyromorphite. The transport dynamics of bio-nHAP and Pb(II) were significantly changed by DOM, and this effect depended strongly on the type of DOM with different molecular weights. Breakthrough curves of Pb(II) and bio-nHAP exhibited apparent "anomalous", sub-diffusive transport behaviors, which could be well quantified by a novel tempered fractional derivative bimolecular reaction equation (T-FBRE). It is globally recognized as overwhelmingly challenging in terms of clinical management. Cancer is taken into account because a prime lethal disease affects different organs of the body. Even with the rapid improvements in the medical sciences, there are no proper medicines to treat specific kinds of cancer. One of the fundamental issues within the malignant growth treatment is the side effect because of conventional treatment systems. Nanotechnology might be an extremely encouraging field for the therapeutic and drug areas; thus, it assumes a crucial part in improving humankind's satisfaction. In the infield of nanotechnology, a plant-mediated fusion of metal nanoparticles has been developed as a substitute to defeat the limitations of traditional synthesis approaches similar to physical and synthetic strategies. These tunable properties of nanomaterials make them progressed apparatuses in the biomedical platform particularly for the improvement of new diagnostics and focused on therapeutics for malignancy.This review incorporates the characterization of nanoparticles with size and shape and features critical uses of biosynthesized green nanomaterials in cancer theranostics.

The need to increase crop productivity and resistance directs interest in nanotechnology. Indeed, biogenic metal oxide nanoparticles can promote beneficial effects in plants, while their synthesis avoids the environmental impacts of conventional synthetic procedures. In this context, this research aimed to synthesize biogenic zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) using, for the first time, an extract of a wild and spontaneous aquatic species, Lemna minor (duckweed). The effectiveness of this biogenic synthesis was evidenced for comparison with non-biogenic ZnO-NPs (obtained without using the plant extract), which have been synthesized in this research. XRD (X-ray diffraction), FE-SEM (field emission gun electron scanning microscopy), EDX (energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy), TEM (transmission electron microscope) and UV-vis (ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry) showed the biogenic approach effectiveness. The duckweed extract was subjected to UHPLC-ESI/QTOF-MS (ultra high-pressure liquid chromatography quadrupole time of flight mass spectrometry) phenolic profiling. This untargeted characterization highlighted a high and chemically diverse content in the duckweed extract of compounds potentially implicated in nanoparticulation. From an application standpoint, the effect of biogenic nanoparticles was investigated on some traits of maize subjected to seed priming with a wide range of biogenic ZnO-NPs concentrations. Inductive effects on the shoot and root biomass development were ascertained concerning the applied dosage. Furthermore, the biogenic ZnO-NPs stimulated the content of chlorophylls, carotenoids, and anthocyanin. Finally, the study of malondialdehyde content (MDA) as a marker of the oxidative status further highlighted the beneficial and positive action of the biogenic ZnO-NPs on maize.

Infectious diseases are one of the most important health problems worldwide, one of the main causes being the development of multi-resistant microorganisms. Likewise, the zoonotic potential of some pathogens and their ability to transfer resistance mechanisms, reduce the therapeutic options in both humans and animals. Salmonella enterica is an important pathogen that affects a wide range of animal species and humans, being Salmonella Typhimurium one of the most frequent serotypes affecting cattle, causing enteritis, diarrhea, and septicemia. The search for alternative therapeutic approaches has gained importance since the emergence of multidrug resistance to antibiotics and periodic outbreaks of salmonellosis. In this sense, the discovery of new drugs and the development of new strategies, such as the use of nanoparticles with antimicrobial activity, are very promising. The aim of this work was the extracellular production of biogenic silver nanoparticles using fungal extracts and the evaluation of their antimicrobial activity against resistant and multi-resistant Salmonella Typhimurium strains. We here demonstrated the potential of the biogenic nanoparticles as effective bacteriostatic and bactericidal agents for use in biomedical applications. Aureobasidium pullulans was grown in liquid culture media amended with selenite and tellurite and selenium (Se) and tellurium (Te) nanoparticles (NPs) were recovered after 30 d incubation. A separation method was applied to recover and characterise Se and Te NPs by asymmetric flow field flow fractionation (AF4) with online coupling to multi-angle light scattering (MALS), ultraviolet visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) detectors. Additional characterisation data was obtained from transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and dynamic light scattering (DLS). Solutions of 0.2% Novachem surfactant and 10 mM phosphate buffer were compared as mobile phases to investigate optimal AF4 separation and particle recovery using Se-NP as a model sample. 88% recovery was reported for 0.2% Novachem solution, compared with 50% recovery for phosphate buffer. Different crossflow (C flow ) rates were compared to further investigate optimum separation, with recoveries of 88% and 30% for Se-NPs, and 90% and 29% for Te-NPs for 3.5 mL min -1 and 2.5 mL min -1 respectively. Zeta-potential (ZP) data suggested higher stability for NP elution in Novachem solution, with increased stability attributed to minimised NP-membrane interaction due to PEGylation. Detection with MALS showed monodisperse Se-NPs (45-90 nm) and polydisperse Te-NPs (5-65 nm).Single particle ICP-MS showed mean particle diameters of 49.7 ± 2.7 nm, and 135 ± 4.3 nm, and limit of size detection (LOSD) of 20 nm and 45 nm for Se-NPs and Te-NPs respectively. TEM images of Se-NPs and Te-NPs displayed a spherical morphology, with the Te-NPs showing a clustered arrangement, which suggested electrostatic attraction amongst neighbouring particles. Particle hydrodynamic diameters (d H ) measured with dynamic light scattering (DLS) further suggested monodisperse Se-NPs and polydisperse Te-NPs distributions, showing good agreement with AF4-MALS for Se-NPs, but suggests that the R g obtained from AF4-MALS for Te-NP was unreliable. Nanoparticles (NPs) can be used in several ways in agriculture, including increasing production rates and improving nutritional values in plants. The present study aims to clarify how biogenic copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) applied by two routes of exposure (foliar spray and soil irrigation) affect the elemental uptake by lettuce. In vivo experiments using lettuce (n = 4) were performed with CuO NPs in comparison with copper salt (CuSO 4 ), considering a final mass added of 20 mg of CuO per plant. The elemental composition of roots was mostly affected by the soil irrigation exposure for both Cu forms (NPs and salt). Neither Cu form added by soil irrigation was translocated to leaves. Copper concentration in leaves was mainly affected by foliar spray exposure for both Cu forms (NPs and salt). All Cu forms through foliar spray were sequestered in the leaves and no translocation to roots was observed. Foliar spray of CuO NPs caused no visual damage in leaves, resulted in less disturbance of elemental composition, and improved dry weight, number of leaves, CO 2 assimilation, and the levels of K, Na, S, Ag, Cd, Cr, Cu, and Zn in leaves without causing significant changes in daily intake of most elements, except for Cu. Although Cu concentration increased in leaves by foliar spray of CuO NPs, it remained safe for consumption.

A Rhodococcus erythropolis bacterium that tolerates normally lethal concentrations of Fe(II), Cu(II), AsO32-, SeO32-, TeO32-, Cd(II) and Zn(II) was identified from an environmental isolate. In characterizing the molecular basis for metal tolerance, a mycothione reductase (Mtr) with remarkable selectivity for TeO32- reduction over SeO32- was identified. In equimolar concentrations of TeO32- and SeO32-, the enzymatic product contains a 7-fold excess of Te. This selectivity is remarkable because the standard reduction potential of SeO32- is 0.20 V more favorable for reduction than TeO32. Selectivity of the enzyme for TeO32- decreases with increasing assay pH. Homology modeling of the enzyme identifies four aromatic residues near the active site, including two histidine residues, that are not present in a related SeO32- preferring reductase. On the basis of more favorable π-interactions for Te than for Se and the pH dependence of the selectivity, the Te-selectivity is attributed in part to these aromatic residues. "Off-targeting" and receptor density expressed at the target sites always compromise the efficacy of the nanoparticle-based drug delivery systems. In this study, we isolated different cell membranes and constructed cell membrane-cloaked biogenic nanoparticles for co-delivery of antitumor paclitaxel (PTX) and multidrug resistance (MDR)-modulator disulfiram (DSF). Consequently, MDR cancer cell membrane (A549/T)-coated hybrid nanoparticles (A549/T CM-HNPs) selectively recognized the source cells and increased the uptake by ninefold via the homotypic binding mechanism. Moreover, the A549/T CM-HNPs sensitized MDR cells to PTX by suppressing P-glycoprotein (P-gp) activity by 3.2-fold and induced effective apoptosis (70%) in homologous A549/T cells. Cell-membrane coating based on the "homotypic binding" is promising in terms of promoting the accumulation of chemotherapeutics in MDR cells and killing them.

Microorganisms offer an alternative green and scalable technology for the synthesis of value added products. Fungi secrete high quantities of bioactive substances, which play dual-functional roles as both reducing and stabilizing agents in the synthesis of colloidal metal nanoparticles such as silver nanoparticles, which display potent antimicrobial properties that can be harnessed for a number of industrial applications. The aim of this work was the production of silver nanoparticles using the extracellular cell free extracts of Phanerochaete chrysosporium , and to evaluate their activity as antimicrobial and antibiofilm agents. The 45-nm diameter silver nanoparticles synthesized using this methodology possessed a high negative surface charge close to -30 mV and showed colloidal stability from pH 3-9 and under conditions of high ionic strength ( [NaCl] = 10-500 mM). A combination of environmental SEM, TEM, and confocal Raman microscopy was used to study the nanoparticle- E. coli interactions to gain a first insight into their antimicrobial mechanisms. Raman data demonstrate a significant decrease in the fatty acid content of E. coli cells, which suggests a loss of the cell membrane integrity after exposure to the PchNPs, which is also commensurate with ESEM and TEM images. Additionally, these biogenic PchNPs displayed biofilm disruption activity for the eradication of E. coli and C. albicans biofilms.

Metal nanoparticles synthesized by green methods with the use of microorganisms are currently one of the most closely studied types of nanomaterials. It has accurately been shown that the characteristics of metal nanoparticles generated in the presence of different bacteria vary. For the two isogenic strains of obligate methylotrophic bacteria of the wild type (M. quaylei MT T ) and its streptomycin-resistant mutant (M. quaylei SM R ), the pleiotropic character of streptomycin resistance mutation in the SM R cells has been revealed. It has been shown that both cultures can generate silver nanoparticles. There is a dramatic difference in the formation of palladium nanoparticles, which are formed only in the presence of cells of the streptomycin-resistant mutant M. quaylei SM R . This study shows that closely related isogenic strains of obligate methylotrophic bacteria can be distinguished by the spectra of biogenic nanoparticles of two noble metals. While palladium nanoparticles are only generated by the cells of the streptomycin-resistant mutant M. quaylei SM R , biogenic silver nanoparticles can be generated from both cultures. Thus, the assessment of the ability of microorganisms to form biogenic nanoparticles of different metals allows the revelation of subtle metabolic differences of even close cultures.

In general, neurodegenerative disorders have a great deal of correlation with the misfolded as well as aggregated forms of protein-based macromolecules. Among various species formed during the aggregation process, protein oligomers have been classified as most toxic entities against several types of living cells. A series of chemicals have been developed to inhibit protein aggregation as a measure to regulate neurodegenerative diseases. Recently, various classes of nanoparticles have also been reported to inhibit protein aggregation. In the present study, we synthesized fluorescent gold nanoparticles (B-AuNPs) employing Olax scandens leaf extract. Next, an in vitro study was performed to assess the effect of as-synthesized B-AuNPs on the aggregation behavior of the ovalbumin (OVA) and other related model proteins. We performed an extensive study to elucidate anti-amyloidogenic properties of nano-sized entities and established that small-sized B-AuNPs manifest chaperone potential against protein aggregation. The cellular machinery of metal metabolism is capable of making a wide range of inorganic nanoparticles and quantum dots. Individual enzymes from these metabolic pathways are being identified with metal reducing activity, and some have been isolated for in situ particle formation and labeling. We previously identified a glutathione reductase like metalloid reductase (GRLMR) from Pseudomonas Moravenis stanleyae with a high affinity for the bioavailable selenium thiolate selenodiglutatione, and exhibiting NADPH-dependent reduction of selenodiglutathione to Se(0); initiating the growth of pure selenium metal nanoparticles. In this study, we demonstrate that the GRLMR enzyme can further reduce selenium to a Se(2-) oxidative state, which is capable of nucleating with Cd(2+) to rapidly form CdSe quantum dots. We show that GRLMR can outcompete background sources of cellular selenium reduction (such as glutathione) and can control the kinetics of quantum dot formation in complex media. The resulting particles are smaller diameter, with a distinguishingly shifted emission spectra and superior FWHM. This study indicates that there is great potential for using GRLMR to study and design enzymes capable of controlled biosynthesis of nanoparticles and quantum dots; paving the way for cellularly assembled nanoparticle-biosensors and reporters.

Biogenic nanoparticles present a wide range of possibilities for use in industrial applications, their production is greener, they can be manufactured using impure feedstocks, and often have different catalytic abilities compared to their chemically made analogs. Nanoparticles of Ag, Pd, Pt, and the bi-elemental PdPt were produced by Morganella psychrotolerans and Desulfovibrio alaskensis and were shown to be able to reduce 4-nitrophenol, an industrial and toxic pollutant. Nanoparticles were recovered post-reaction and then reused, thus demonstrating continued activity. Biogenic PdNPs were shown to have enhanced specificity in a wide pH activity range in the oxidation of the three common substrates used 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS), 2,6-Dimethoxyphenol and (2,6-DMP) and 3,3',5,5'-Tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to determine oxidase-like activity. Overall Pd in a nanoparticle form exhibited higher oxidation activity than its ionic counterpart, highlighting the potential of biogenic nanoparticles over the use of ions or chemically made elemental forms.

Treatment of toxic and emerging pollutants (T&EPs) is increasing the threats to the survival of conventional wastewater treatment (WWTs) technologies. The high installation and operational costs of advanced treatment technologies have shifted the research interest to the development of economical and reliable technology for management of T&EPs. Thus, recently biogenic nanoparticles (BNPs) fabricated using microbes/microorganisms are getting tremendous research interest due to their unique properties (i.e. high specific surface area, desired morphology, catalytic reactivity) for the biodegradation and biosorption of T&EPs. In addition, BNPs can be manufactured using metal contaminated water which indicates a hidden potential for resource recovery and utilization. Therefore, the present study discusses the adsorptive and catalytic performance of BNPs in the removal of T&EPs from water (W) and wastewater (WW). In addition, inspired by the superior performance of BNPs in advance WWT, a model of BNPs based WWT resource recovery and utilization process is also proposed. Finally, main issues i.e. mass production, leaching, poisoning/toxicity, regeneration, reusability and fabrication costs and process optimization are discussed which are main hinders in the transfer of BNPs based WWT technologies from laboratory to commercial scale., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. This study was conducted to determine and compare the effect of chemically-synthesised and biogenic silver nanoparticles on the benthic bacterial community structure in mesocosms containing sediment from three rivers in geographical sites with different population densities (low, medium, high), and therefore likely to be associated with respective low, moderate and high degrees of anthropogenic input. The nanoparticles were applied at the upper limit expected to accumulate in impacted environments (4 μg kg sed -1 ). The biomass, concentrations of elements, including selection metals (P, K, Na, K, Ca, Mg, Zn, Cu, Al, Ag) were all significantly higher at the high density than at the low density sites. Bacterial community profiling (terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism and amplicon sequencing) showed that the bacterial community structure in the sediments from the high population density site were resilient to environmental perturbations [adjustment from in-situ to ex-situ (laboratory) conditions], as well as to exposure to silver nanoparticles, with the converse being true for the low population density site. Results obtained from amplicon sequencing were interrogated to the lowest taxonomic level with a relative abundance >5%. Proteobacteria was the most abundant phylum in all the sediments. Notable resistance (increased relative abundance) to one or both forms of silver nanoparticles was seen in the class Thermoleophilia, and the orders Myxococcales, Bacteriodales, Pirellules CCU21 and iii 1-15 (class Acidobacteria 6). Conversely, sensitivity was demonstrated in the family Koribacteraceae and the orders Rhizobiales, Ellin 329 and Gemmatales. It is recommended that pro-active environmental monitoring is performed in aquatic systems receiving point source pollution from wastewater treatment plants in order to assess the accumulation of silver nanoparticles.
