In this study, a web-learning environment was created on the basis of motivation-oriented teaching method using ARCS model and Gagne’s 9 events of instruction. Then, the web-learning environment was introduced into mechanical drawing class, and the effectiveness was investigated with the comparison of results from paper-based and web-based tests. After that, learning motivation was also assessed using ARCS evaluation sheet. From the results, there existed the advantage of using web-learning environment. In addition, it was remarkable that attention-related factors greatly contributed the enhancement of learning motivation.

L'objectiu d'aquest treball és dissenyar i construir un robot capaç de traspassar un dibuix tècnic realitzat amb ordinador, des d'un arxiu SVG per exemple, a un dibuix real sobre una superfície plana. En aquests estudi es vol aconseguir una primera aproximació a la solució, i s'ha estudiat el cas treballant amb un retolador que dibuixa sobre un paper per després poder-ho extrapolar a altres solucions. Un altre dels objectius del treball és estudiar la viabilitat de realitzar-ho com un sistema en llaç obert per mantenir la simplicitat i aconseguir un dispositiu de baix cost. En aquesta memòria es descriu tot el procés que ha seguit el projecte, des de la idea inicial fins a la seva creació. El primer pas ha estat escollir els components que podien dotar al conjunt d'una millor precisió, un fet bàsic si es vol realitzar un sistema enllaç obert. Després s'ha dissenyat l'estructura bàsica i tots els elements necessaris per la construcció del prototip i s'ha creat el software encarregat de controlar-lo i programar-lo. Els elements claus per garantir el bon funcionament són els motors pas a pas encarregats del moviment, el microcontrolador Arduino UNO que controla el funcionament del robot i els programes realitzats amb Python que realitzen la transformació del document original en comandes específiques per l'Arduino. S'ha establert un codi de comunicació entre el Python, des de l'ordinador, i l'Arduino del robot a través de Bluetooth. Els resultats són molt satisfactoris tot i que existeixen errors de precisió que es podrien estudiar en nous treballs. És per això que es considera que s'ha complert amb tots els objectius i s'ha aconseguit construir el robot desitjat.

This document contains detailed design information for assembly of a Dry Aerosol Deposition Device (DADD). This report is further to technical report AFRL-RX-TY-TP-2008-4617, ADA492108 and technical report AFRL-RX-TY-TR-2008-4592, ADA502105; work unit DODT0056. Growing threats of biological contamination of infrastructure and equipment led to the development of antimicrobial surfaces/coatings. Standard methods to test efficacy of such materials have applied microbial agents suspended in aqueous buffers. These surfaces, however, will likely be contaminated via aerosol exposure, so antimicrobial efficacy measurements using microbes deposited as aerosols will provide a more-representative test platform. A settling chamber is the most common method for depositing biological aerosols on surfaces, but it can impose limitations in respect to time and variability of sample loading. In prior work, a Dry Aerosol Deposition Device (DADD) was developed that uses impaction rather than settling to load surfaces with biological aerosols, providing a mechanism for rapid and highly reproducible loading of microorganisms onto surfaces. The DADD was tested with Bacillus atrophaeus spores and Staphylococcus aureus vegetative cells, deposited to glass coupons at concentrations exceeding 1 104 colony-forming units/cm2. The average coefficient of variation (CV) for sample-to-sample loading within experiments was 13.6% for spores and 6.1% for S. aureus cells. The DADD provides a mechanism to load coupons with a highly reproducible challenge of microorganisms. Preliminary validation was performed on glass coupons, but the device can also be used with aluminum, concrete or fabric samples. The DADD was demonstrated to be a relatively simple and inexpensive device that can easily be contained within a 4-foot biological safety cabinet.1

This document is the final technical report for the project, Electrical Power Generated from Tidal Currents and Delivered to USCG Station Eastport, ME Pier (Project) (BAA HSCG32-09-C-R00018). The US Coast Guard (USCG) Research and Development Center and Ocean Renewable Power Company LLC (ORPC) signed a contract effective August 26, 2009, under which ORPC delivered services for the Project, which constituted the U.S. government's first application of tidal energy. The Project sought to demonstrate that tidal currents could provide usable power to the USCG's station in Eastport, Maine (Station Eastport). To accomplish this, tidal power harnessed in Cobscook Bay by ORPC's beta pre-commercial TidGen (trademarked) power system (Beta TidGen System) was used to charge battery banks that were periodically delivered to the USCG pier to be discharged into the USCG's 41-foot Utility Boat (UTB), mainly to hear the UTB's engines.

Several prototype zoom (variable magnification) lens systems were developed for use with short-wave infrared cameras as part of the DARPA BOSS program at NRL. These zoom systems relied on novel GRIN (GRadient INdex) lenses, which were used in two ways. The first approach deformed the lenses to alter system magnification, while the second approach moved the lenses relative to one another. This report describes the mechanical designs of both a prototype utlizing the first approach and a prototype utilizing the second approach. Also discussed are the performance of these mechanical systems after fabrication and testing; and possible improvement to be made in future prototypes. Included in the report are detailed mechanical drawings of the last prototype built for this program, which was also the best performing., The original document contains color images.

This research produced a new class of skin friction gages that measures wall shear even in shock environments. One test specimen separately measured wall shear and variable-pressure induced moment. Through the investigation of available computational modeling methods, techniques for accurately predicting gage physical responses were developed. The culmination of these model combinations was a design optimization procedure. This procedure was applied to three disparate test conditions: 1) short duration, high-enthalpy testing, 2) blow-down testing, and 3) flight testing. The resulting optimized gage designs were virtually tested against each set of nominal load conditions. The finalized designs each successfully met their respective test condition constraints while maximizing strain output due to wall shear. These gages limit sources of apparent strain: inertia, temperature gradient, and uniform pressure. A unique use of bellows provided a protective shroud for surface strain gages. Oil fill provided thermal and dynamic damping while eliminating uniform pressure as a source of output voltage. Two Wheatstone bridge configurations were developed to minimize temperature effects first from temperature gradient and then from spatially varying heat flux induced gradient. An inertia limiting technique was developed that parametrically investigated mass and center of gravity impact on strain output. Multiple disciplinary computational simulations of thermal, dynamic, shear, moment, inertia, and instrumentation interaction were developed. Examinations of instrumentation error, settling time, filtering, multiple input dynamic response, and strain gage placement to avoid thermal gradient were conducted. Detailed mechanical drawings for several gages were produced for fabrication and future testing.

The efficiency of the mechanical design process can be improved by the use of evolutionary algorithms. Evolutionary algorithms provide a convenient and robust method to search for appropriate design solutions. Difficult non-linear problems are often encountered during the mechanical engineering design process. Solutions to these problems often involve computationally-intensive simulations. Evolutionary algorithms tuned to work with a small number of solution iterations can be used to automate the search for optimal solutions to these problems. An evolutionary algorithm was designed to give reliable results after a few thousand iterations; additionally the scalability and the ease of application to varied problems were considered. Convergence velocity of the algorithm was improved considerably by altering the mutation-based parameters in the algorithm. Much of this performance gain can be attributed to making the magnitude of the mutation and the minimum mutation rates self-adaptive. Three motorsport based design problems were simulated and the evolutionary algorithm was applied to search for appropriate solutions. The first two, a racing-line generator and a suspension kinematics simulation, were investigated to highlight properties of the evolutionary algorithm: reliability; solution representation; determining variable/performance relationships; and multiple objectives were discussed. The last of these problems was the lap-time simulation of a Formula SAE vehicle. This problem was solved with 32 variables, including a number of major conceptual differences. The solution to this optimisation was found to be significantly better than the 2004 UWA Motorsport vehicle, which finished 2nd in the 2005 US competition. A simulated comparison showed the optimised vehicle would score 62 more points (out of 675) in the dynamic events of the Formula SAE competition. This report documents the mechanical structure, kinematic models and control implementation of two micro-robots, called Flipper and Crawler, that can traverse both on walls and floors. They are battery powered and use specially designed feet using suction cups. The design of these feet is described in Section 2. The mechanical design was arrived at through extensive analysis. It has a biped structure with revolute and prismatic hip joints. The underactuated mechanical structure was chosen to reduce weight and power consumption by decreasing the number of actuators. Micro-controllers from Motorola, Inc. and Texas Instruments, Inc. were used as embedded controllers with the ability to implement motion planning and trajectory generation algorithms to control these robots. The details are given in Sections 3 and 4. The report concludes with the summary and suggested improvements.

The primary use of pantography is to program an articulator so the articulator movements will more closely harmonize with the patient's mandibular movements. The objective of this four-part investigation was to assess and compare the accuracy, repeatability, and procedure time of the optoelectronic computerized pantograph, the electronic stylus computerized pantograph, the mechanical pantograph, and the kinematic face-bow. This study was performed in vitro on three identical semi- adjustable articulators (Denar Mark II, Teledyne Water Pik). A kinematic face-bow (Denar Axis Locator, Teledyne Water Pik) and optoelectronic pantograph (Condylocomp, Dentron) performed the transverse horizontal axis investigations. A mechanical (Denar, Teledyne Water Pik), electronic-stylus (Pantronic, Teledyne Water Pik), and optoelectronic (Condylocomp, Dentron) pantograph performed protrusive condylar path, progressive mandibular lateral translation, and immediate mandibular lateral translation determinations. The experimental design restricted the patient variables associated with these methods. An initial evaluation was performed to identify the measured mid-point of the articulator condyles. Next, the Stuart axis locator (Stuart Gnathologic Instruments) was used to determine the transverse horizontal axis of each articulator. The kinematically located transverse horizontal axis and the measured center of the condylar ball were identical.

Design of single-point subsurface moorings is done manually at present with the help of some computer programs. These programs are used for analyzing the mooring, but setting up of the initial mooring configuration and the subsequent modifications on the basis of the results of the analysis are done by the design engineer. An expert system for mooring design is developed to eliminate the human expert from the design process and thus to enable a novice to design a mooring by himself. Using the expert system, an optimum least-weight in air design can be developed in less time than usually required in conventional procedures. A significant advantage is that the system can serve as a vehicle for effective transfer of present day expertise for future applications. The system is developed and implemented on an IBM PC/AT. It has a user-friendly, interactive, menu-driven input procedure and a sophisticated output facility. The design process is totally automated and the requirement to consult a human expert is eliminated. The system has tremendous flexibility and a knowledge engineer can easily adapt it to the specific requirements of a particular user. The concept of machine learning is introduced by recording the failure data and using this information in the later decision making processes. A CAD package, AUTOCAD, is used to generate the drawings and an interface is developed between the CAD package and the expert system so that the former is transparent to the user. This report covers the design, development, and thermal modeling and testing of a new module family, the Improved Standard Electronic Modules (ISEM), which is compatible with the existing SEM Program modules. Naval Ocean Systems Center (NOSC) directed Naval Avionics Center (NAC), in conjunction with Naval Weapons Support Center (NWSC), to develop, test, and fabricate the Improved SEM.

This report describes a proposed 3-draw process utilizing the standard U.S. cup on a modified Small Caliber Ammunition Modernization Program (SCAMP) Case Submodule to manufacture 7.62mm cartridge cases that would satisfy the U.S. NATO grain configuration requirements.

The Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), at the request of the U.S. Army Engineer Power Group (USAENPG), has performed a failure analysis on two MH-1A reactor core hold-down bolts that broke in service. Adherence to fabrication specifications, post-service properties and possible causes of bolt failure were investigated. The bolt material was verified as 17-4PH precipitation hardening stainless steel. Measured bolt dimensions also were in accordance with fabrication drawing specifications. Bolt failure occurred in the region of a locking pin hole which reduced the bolt net section by 47 percent. The failure analysis indicates that the probable cause of failure was net section overloading resulting from a lateral bending force on the bolt. The analysis indicates that net section overloading could also have resulted from combined tensile stresses (bolt preloading plus differential thermal expansion). Recommendations are made for improved bolting.

The laser radar simulator optical design is described. The profile of the mirror surfaces is described in detail. Two test arrangements for analyzing the optical system were set up. These were termed the parent and system tests. These tests and the resulting test results are discussed in the text. The parent test was simply a test of the optical system before the aspheric sections of the secondary and tertiary mirrors were cored out. The system test was a test of the finished optical components in their mounts. The results of these two tests indicated that no appreciable change occurred in the optics due to the coring and both the parent and system tests show that the optical system is performing within the required tolerances. Finally, a detailed step-by-step alignment procedure for the optics is given.

The integration of dissimilar CAD/CAM hardware and software on local and geographically distributed networks is the major problem faced by large organizations today. The authors begin by examining the existing system for storage, retrieval, control, and distribution of design information at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and describe a new prototype Engineering Information System (EIS). They then discuss the Department of Energy neutral Data Exchange Format (DOE/DEF) for the sharing of mechanical drawings among DOE Installations. Finally, they describe the potential role of the Intelligent Gateway Processor (IGP) as a transaction controller for engineering resources among contractors of the Air Force Logistics Command. IGP capabilities include a unique interpreter driven user interface which permits the installation and modification of resources and the translation of dissimilar data formats, commands, and protocols, in aunified manner while running non-stop. A robotic gripper which picks up 155-mm projectiles and cylindrical propelling charges and holds them securely while they are moved through any orientation within a self-propelled howitzer is described. The exact tasks that the gripper must perform are studied and four preliminary concepts are shown. One concept is developed. The development effort includes a kinematic analysis, force analysis, stress analysis, and a complete drawing package.

The need for development of the tool evolved from the fact that current USAF firefighting equipment does not provide rapid access to aircraft fires occurring in airframe voids where access ports are either limited or not provided. This is the final report of a project to develop prototype miniature laboratory apparatus to be used in conducting a series of experiments and investigations relating to a Manufacturing Information System. The size and cost of manufacturing equipment has made it extremely difficult to perform a realistic modeling and simulation of the manufacturing process in university research laboratories. Likewise the size and cost factors, coupled with many uncontrolled variables of the production situation has even made it difficult to perform adequate manufacturing research in the industrial setting. The difficulty of developing Integrated Manufacturing Systems is well documented by the large amount of funding and effort being spent by industry and government. It was the purpose for research funded under this grant to continue the development of miniature prototype equipment for use in an integrated CAD/CAM Laboratory. The equipment developed under this grant and from previous work is capable of actually performing production operations (e.g. drilling, milling, turning, punching, etc.) on metallic and non-metallic workpieces. It is now expected that the prototype equipment developed or otherwise acquired under this grant will now provide the basis for extensive research on Manufacturing Information Systems, Common Database Development, CIM Application Program Development, Local Area Networking, and Knowledge-based CAD/CAM Training utilizing Interactive Videodisc Delivery Systems. The minimum-time path for a robot arm has been a long-standing and unsolved problem of considerable interest. We present a general solution to this problem that involves joint-space tesselation, a dynamic time-scaling algorithm, and graph search. The solution incorporates full dynamics of movement and actuator constraints, and can be easily extended for joint limits and workspace obstacles, but is subject to the particular tesselation scheme used. The results presented show that, in general, the optimal paths are not straight lines, but rather curves in joint-space that utilize the dynamics of the arm and gravity to help in moving the arm faster to its destination. This report summarizes progress on Research in VLSI Systems, from March 1981 to May 1982. The major areas under investigation are design description and synthesis, testing, and algorithms and architectures. In each area, our aim is to anticipate and to solve problems attendent to VLSI. We introduce the research in detail and discuss progress; we also discuss important practical developments. The bibliography list research papers describes the work in greater depth.

Although technical manuals often consist primarily of graphic material, there is a virtual absence of empirical data on how technical writers and artist might improve the comprehensibility of graphics. This study, sponsored by the Navy Technical Information Presentation Program, evaluated several alternate methods of presenting written material within a graphic. The number, location and sequence of 'callups' were systematically varied in a series of drawings and tried out experimentally on samples of Navy trainees. The major finding was that arranging callouts sequentially provides for good comprehension, even when the number of callouts is large. (Author)

Design of the FSD sled previously developed at NCSL to be used for fast surface delivery of pollution control equipment was modified to provide a means to use the sled as a non-submerged or dry boat for transportation of non-floatable loads or a dry work platform in addition to the original use for delivery of pollution control equipment. The FSD sled was designed to have the capability of manually loading and off-loading floating equipment at sea. At rest in water the empty sled lies with the aft end submerged. After the floating payload is aboard and the sled is under way, the water drains, the stern comes up, and the sled hydroplanes. At the deployment site, lines securing the equipment to the sled are released and the stern submerges, leaving the payload floating free. The improved version (wet-dry sled) is similar to the FSD sled, but has been modified by adding a hatch at the stern that can be closed to seal the hull to provide a dry boat. The feasibility of providing a fluidic back-up control for the Navy's Advanced flight control actuation system (AFCAS) was investigated and potential design concepts were evaluated. A prelim. spec. for an electro/hydraulic/fluidic direct drive servo valve was proposed. Technical data and supplier hardware was reviewed. A design concept for an electro/hydraulic/fluidic servo control valve was selected and a prelim. design drawing was prepared. The study confirms the feasibility of providing a fluidic back-up for the AFCAS direct drive servo valve. (Author)

Effort is continuing on the MM and T program to establish the fabrication techniques and requirements to meet hardware production levels as specified in the subject contract. Hermetic cell samples are presently being fabricated and tested under the required thermal discharge profiles to demonstrate the feasibility of each cell design. Prototype hermetic battery models are being constructed to verify conformance to all dimensional and weight specifications. Such models will aid in the finalization of complete drawing packages for each of the battery types. These drawings will define all required cell/battery components, sub-assemblies and process specifications and will be accompanied by a detailed bill of material to insure proper configuration control.

When calculating the whipping motions of a surface ship caused by an underwater explosion, it is necessary to have a structural model of the ship in finite element form. Among the input data required for this model are the moment of inertia and shear area of the girder at specified cross-sections along the ship. If these data are unavailable, it may be necessary to compute them from the ship's plans. The general theory involved in computing them is described as is a simple computer program written to expedite the calculation. (Author)

This report describes the effort conducted on Phase I of the two-phase Air Force Contract 'New Concepts in Composite Material Landing Gear for Military Aircraft.' This Phase I section was structured to determine the maximum practical use of composite material for landing gear hardware under three specific sets of constraints., See also Volume 1, AD-A058 529.

In cooperation with the Aerospace Guidance and Metrology Center (AGMC), Newark AFS, Ohio, the Air Force Packaging Evaluation Agency (AFPEA), Wright-Patterson AFB OH, designed, developed and tested a prototype reusable shipping container and cushion insert for the C-5 Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU). This program resulted in AGMC awarding a contract for fabrication of 60 of the new pack designs to replace the currently used wood container pack. As specified in the contract, the contractor provided AFPEA with a completed pack for verification testing prior to the fabrication and delivery of the 60 units. (Author)

Effort has continued on the Manufacturing Methods and Technology Program to establish and evaluate the fabrication techniques and automation processes required to attain hardware production levels as specified in the subject contract. Fabrication and testing of hermetic cell prototypes under thr required thermal discharge profiles has continued to demonstrate the feasibility of each cell design and to define cell performance and safety characteristics. Complete drawing packages, specifications and detailed bill of material are presently being developed to define the dimensional characteristics of each cell/battery and insure proper configuration control. Hermetic sealing of the cell preiphery has been successfully implemented on all required cell sizes (.550 inch to 1.500 inch diameter) using an arc welding process with no thermal damage to adjacent components. Incorporation of an additional arc welding station will permit attainment of the required production rate goal of 5000 units per day.

This report presents the findings of a study performed to provide a basis for the selection of a computerized representation of three-dimensional structures for the Computer-Aided Engineering and Architectural Design System (CAEADS). The project was divided into four interlinked phases: (a) Establishment of CAEADS requirements for a building and site description system; (b) Identification of criteria against which potential candidate base systems can be evaluated; (c) Survey of systems and techniques; and (d) Evaluation of candidate systems. It was found that development of a three-dimensional geometric data base system to support CAEADS will be a complex task, but it is feasible. No existing software which exactly matches the requirements could be identified, but a range of feasible implementation strategies which make use of existing available software exists. Strategies based upon the OXSYS system (Applied Research of Cambridge Ltd.), the Evans and Sutherland Design System (Evans and Sutherland Computer Corporation), and GLIDE (Carnegie-Melon University) are most highly recommended. The objective of this manufacturing technology program was to demonstrate feasibility to produce T55 compressor blades by isothermal roll forging within 0.010 inch of drawing tolerances. This objective was accomplished through process definition and application to blades in Ti6Al4V for proofing and in AM- 350 steel for the T55 engine. Satisfactory structure and mechanical properties were achieved in AM-350 steel after isothermal rolling. Cost analyses showed good potential for progressive cost reduction with continued work over present methods of production., Prepared in cooperation with the Avco Lycoming Div.
