Native grasslands have the ability to adapt to different levels of shade, an important feature that needs to be investigated since silvopastoral systems provide many ecosystem services and productive benefits. To analyze the effect of artificial shade on a natural grassland in the northeastern area of Uruguay, the accumulated herbage mass production, its seasonal distribution and botanical composition (i.e., functional groups) were evaluated. An experiment with a randomised complete block design with four replications was conducted for three years (from March 2019 to April 2022). The treatments were: native grassland (CN) in full sun, CN with 35% solar radiation interception (IRS), CN with 50% IRS, CN with 65% IRS, and CN with 80% IRS. The botanical composition in summer and autumn were similar throughout the years, and a summer perennial grasses domination was found which was independent of the level of solar radiation interception. In winter and spring, the botanical composition evolved towards a greater presence of winter perennial grasses, winter annual grasses, and Cyperaceae+Juncaceae+Liliaceae at the highest shade levels. Higher levels of solar radiation interception increased the production of the native grassland. Con el objetivo de analizar el efecto de la sombra artificial sobre la producción, distribución estacional de forraje de pastizales y composición botánica a través de grupos funcionales se condujo un experimento durante tres años (desde marzo del 2019 hasta abril del 2022) en un pastizal natural de la zona noreste del Uruguay. Se utilizó un diseño experimental de bloques completos con cuatro repeticiones. Los tratamientos fueron: campo natural (CN) a pleno sol, CN con 35% de intercepción de la radiación solar (IRS), CN con 50% IRS, CN con 65% IRS y CN con 80% IRS. Se evaluó los tipos funcionales de plantas a través de años y estaciones, la producción de biomasa estacional y total acumulada. La composición en verano y otoño tendió a homogeneizarse con los años asociándose a gramíneas perennes estivales, independiente del nivel de intercepción de la radiación solar. En invierno y primavera la cobertura evolucionó hacia una mayor asociación con gramíneas perennes invernales, gramíneas anuales invernales y Cyperáceas+Juncáceas+Liliáceas en los niveles de mayor sombramiento. El incremento de los niveles de intercepción de la radiación solar aumentó la producción del campo natural. El efecto de la sombra a través del tiempo determinó respuestasestacionales diferentes en la producción de biomasa y composición de tipos funcionales de plantas.

The characteristics of forest plantations condition the dynamics of photosynthetically active radiation under the tree canopy and its area of influence, determining the development of understory communities. The purpose of this work was to study the relationships between the lighting environment and vegetation cover (%), the existing species and their photosynthetic metabolism. The study was performed in commercial forest plantations, along nine transects in a North-to-South direction that were located between rows, in alleys and natural grasslands, by placing 15 frames of 0.25 square meters every two meters in each one of them. The photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) value for each environment was recorded between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. P. taeda and E. grandis displayed similar light interception while E. globulus provided a greater passage of PAR transmission into the forest floor, with favourable consequences to the development of the herbaceous structure community of the underbrush. C4 species increased their coverage when faced with elevated PAR levels. On the contrary, C3 species achieved greater coverage during intermediate levels of light interception. Higher levels of light interception indicate a lower coverage of the underbrush community, and the species with C4 metabolic pathways were the most affected, Las características de las plantaciones forestales condicionan la dinámica de la radiación fotosintéticamente activa bajo el dosel arbóreo y su área de influencia, determinando el desarrollo de comunidades de sotobosque. El objetivo del trabajo fue estudiar las relaciones entre el ambiente lumínico y la cobertura vegetal (%), las especies presentes y sus metabolismos fotosintéticos. El estudio se realizó en plantaciones forestales comerciales, en nueve transectos con dirección N – S ubicados en la entre fila, callejones y campo natural, localizando 15 marcos de 0,25 m2 a cada dos metros en cada una. Se determinó la radiación fotosintéticamente activa (RFA) en cada uno de los ambientes en el horario de 11:00 a 13:00 hrs. P. taeda y E. grandis mostraron un régimen de interceptación luminosa similar, en cambio E. globulus determina un mayor pasaje de RFA trasmitida (RFAt) hacia el piso forestal, con la consecuencia favorable sobre el desarrollo de la comunidad herbácea de sotobosque. Especies C4 aumentan su cobertura frente a incrementos en los niveles de RFA, en tanto, especies C3 logran la mayor cobertura en niveles intermedios de intercepción luminosa. Altos niveles de interceptación luminosa determinan una baja cobertura de la comunidad de sotobosque, y las especies con vía metabólica C4 fueron las más afectadas.

Annual winter pastures are strategic components in crop-livestock systems in Uruguay. The aim of this study was to evaluate the N legume fixation into an annual ryegrass pasture contrasted to the N fertilizer addition. The experimental design was a randomized complete block design with 2x2 factorial arrangement of the treatments, two pasture types: a) annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum L.) pasture, and b) of annual ryegrass with two annual legume species (Trifolium resupinatum L. and Trifolium vesiculosum L.); and two levels of N fertilizer: a) no N fertilizer, and b) 64 kg N ha-1. They were grazed with Holstein steers. Setaria italica crop was planted in summer to evaluate the carry over effects of the treatments on its herbage mass production. Pasture accumulated herbage mass was significantly increased with N fertilizer (P ≤ 0.01), increment of 1277 ± 322.5 kg DM ha-1. The legume species’ addition plus N fertilization led to a higher nitrogen nutrition index in the mixed pastures. Ryegrass herbage mass was positively influenced by N addition, but with that there was a 47% of weed herbage mass increase in the pure annual ryegrass pastures. The average daily gain of steers was positively influenced by legumes, with an average of 1.01 kg PV day-1 in mixtures. N fertilizer addition allowed a higher stocking rate and higher animal production in winter. A carryover effect of the treatments was not found on S. italica accumulated herbage mass. Legumes’ addition to annual ryegrass allowed a greater animal performance but did not provide any additional benefit to the following summer crop. Las pasturas anuales de invierno son componentes estratégicos de los sistemas agropecuarios en Uruguay. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar el efecto de la fijación biológica de N de leguminosas en una mezcla con raigrás anual en contraste con la adición de fertilizante nitrogenado. El diseño experimental fue un diseño de bloques completos al azar con arreglo factorial 2 x 2 de los tratamientos, con dos tipos de pasturas: a) pastura de raigrás anual (Lolium multiflorum L.), y b) pastura mezcla de raigrás anual con dos especies de leguminosas anuales (Trifolium resupinatum L. y Trifolium vesiculosum L.); y dos niveles de fertilización con N: a) sin fertilizante, y b) 64 kg N ha-1. Las pasturas fueron pastoreadas con novillos Holstein. En verano se realizó un cultivo de Setaria italica para evaluar los efectos de los tratamientos en la producción de biomasa de este. La biomasa acumulada de las pasturas de invierno incrementó significativamente con fertilización de N (P ≤ 0.01), con un incremento de 1277 ± 322.5 kg MS ha-1. La pastura mezcla fertilizada con N produjo un mayor índice de nutrición nitrogenada que la pastura de raigrás anual. La biomasa aérea de raigrás presentó un incremento con el agregado de N; sin embargo, en las pasturas monofíticas de raigrás hubo un aumento del 47% de malezas. La ganancia media diaria de los novillos incrementó con la incorporación de leguminosas, con un promedio en las pasturas mezclas de 1,01 kg PV día-1. La adición de fertilizante nitrogenado permitió una mayor carga animal y una mayor producción animal en invierno. No se encontró un efecto de los tratamientos en la biomasa acumulada de S. italica. La incorporación de leguminosas al raigrás anual permitió una mayor ganancia diaria de peso vivo por animal, pero no produjo un efecto adicional sobre el cultivo sucesor de verano. Supplementing calves on deferred native grasslands during their first winter, helps overcoming the nutritive deficits which occur during this season. However, the demand of both qualification and availability of labour may restrain its adoption. The objective of this work was to evaluate calves’ average daily live weight gain (ADG) and supplemental feed efficiency (SFE) as a response to self-feeding methods. Two experiments (Exp) were carried out: i) Exp A, on sandy soils with Braford calves and, ii) Exp B on basaltic soils with Hereford calves. In each experiment 40 castrated male calves were used and randomly allotted to one of two replicates of these treatments: non-supplemented control (C); everyday restricted supplementation (E); restricted self-fed supplementation delivered two times a week (RSF); ad libitum self-fed (ASF). Exp A registered lowest ADG for C (0.155 kg an-1 day-1), similar ADG between E and RSF (0.623 kg an-1 day-1 on average) and highest for ASF (1.135 kg an-1 day-1) (p 0.05) between treatments for Exp A, even though ASF presented a 50% higher SFE (9.4) than RSF (6.2) and E (6.1). With the aim of evaluating the incidence of biological and edaphic factors on the establishment of forage mixtures, a trial was set consisting in 180 sites in the states of Florida, Durazno and Lavalleja, Uruguay. The percentage of establishment was measured 90 days after seeding through the percentage of emergency, in three types of mixtures: a) perennial grass and legumes; b) perennial grass and legumes, and annual ryegrass; c) perennial grass and legumes, and wheat. Biological (predecessor crop, predecessor crop stubble, date of seeding, species sown) and edaphic (organic matter, pH, phosphorus) factors were quantified to determine their effects on the establishment period of the sowed seeds. This period was 29.2% for all the sites and species. Type of predecessor crop and species sowed (Festuca arundinacea Schreb., Dactylis glomerata L., Trifolium repens L., Trifolium pratense L., Lotus corniculatus L., Medicago sativa L., Lolium multiflorum Lam., Triticum aestivum L.) in the mixtures were determinant in the establishment percentage of the mixtures (perennial grass and legumes). Annual grasses reached the highest establishment percentage (50%) but supressed perennial grasses. Setaria italica (L.) P. Beauv., was the best predecessor crop allowing an establishment of 40% in a mixture of perennial grass and legumes. On the other hand, Lotus corniculatus achieved the lowest establishment (14%). A negative correlation was found between legume establishment and a pH lower than 5.9., Con el objetivo de evaluar la incidencia de factores biológicos y edáficos en el establecimiento de mezclas forrajeras, se efectuó un experimento que abarcó 180 sitios en los departamentos de Florida, Durazno y Lavalleja, Uruguay. El porcentaje establecimiento fue medido a los 90 días de la siembra en tres tipos de mezclas: a) gramíneas y leguminosas perennes; b) gramíneas y leguminosas perennes, y raigrás anual; c) gramíneas y leguminosas perennes, y trigo. Fueron cuantificados distintos factores biológicos (tipo de rastrojo, fecha de siembra, especies sembradas) y edáficos (materia orgánica, pH y fósforo), para determinar las causas que afectaron el establecimiento de las semillas sembradas. El establecimiento promedio para todos los sitios y especies fue de 29,2%. El cultivo antecesor y el tipo especie sembrada en la mezcla (Festuca arundinacea Schreb., Dactylis glomerata L., Trifolium repens L., Trifolium pratense L,, Lotus corniculatus L., Medicago sativa L., Lolium multiflorum Lam., Triticum aestivum L.) fueron determinantes en el porcentaje de establecimiento de las mezclas. Las gramíneas anuales fueron las de mayor establecimiento (50%) pero deprimieron a las especies perennes. Setaria italica (L.) P. Beauv., fue el antecesor más apto (40%) para el establecimiento de las gramíneas perennes y leguminosas. Por el contrario, Lotus corniculatus alcanzó el menor establecimiento (14%). Asimismo, se encontró una correlación negativa entre el establecimiento de leguminosas y nivel de pH menores a 5,9.

Resumen: El objetivo del presente trabajo fue evaluar el efecto antiparasitario de Plantago lanceolata (Llantén) frente a Lolium multiflorum (Raigrás anual). Se utilizaron 40 corderos Merino Australiano de 7 meses, clínicamente sanos y castrados. Dos grupos tomados al azar de 20 animales fueron asignados, después de ser dosificados con un antihelmíntico de amplio espectro, a 1 hectárea de Plantago lanceolata cv. Tonic y a 1 hectárea de Lolium multiflorum cv. Pronto, las que se fraccionaron en tres parcelas de 0,33 hectárea cada una y se manejaron con 14 días de ocupación y 28 días de descanso. La disponibilidad inicial de forraje fue de 1380 kg/ha MS para Llantén y 1441 kg/ha MS para Raigrás. La evolución de la infección parasitaria y el peso vivo se realizó cada 14 días y se estudiaron mediante análisis de varianza y diferencias de medias. Los géneros parasitarios se evaluaron cada 28 días y el hematocrito se determinó en ocasión del quinto muestreo. Ambos grupos mantuvieron niveles parasitarios leves y culminaron con iguales cargas parasitarias. Los dos grupos de animales ganaron peso durante todo el experimento con excepción del segundo y noveno muestreo. No se observaron diferencias estadísticas en ninguno de los muestreos. Los géneros predominantes fueron Haemonchus spp. y Trichostrongylus spp., y en menor proporción Ostertagia spp., Cooperia spp. y Oesophagostomum spp. En todos los casos se determinaron valores normales de hematocrito y una correlación negativa con el HPG. Se concluye que corderos con niveles de parasitosis leves son capaces de realizar buenas ganancias de peso vivo en pasturas con altos niveles nutritivos y que Plantago lanceolata es capaz de generar adecuada productividad animal. No logró ser demostrado que los taninos condensados hayan actuado como controladores de la parasitosis. Summary: The objective of the present work was to evaluate the antiparasitic effect of Plantago lanceolata (llantén) against Lolium multiflorum (annual rye grass). Forty healthy and castrated 7 months old Merino lambs were used. Were assigned randomly, after being drenched with a broad spectrum antiparasitic drug, in two groups of 20 lambs each to one Hectarea (ha) of Plantago lanceolata cv. Tonic and one ha of Lolium multiflorum cv. Pronto, which were divided into 3 paddocks of 0,33 ha each, and were managed in periods of 14 days on 28 days off the paddocks. Initial forage availability was 1380 kg/ha DM for llantén and 1441 kg/ha DM for rye grass. Evolution of parasite load and animal live weight every 14 days were evaluated, and by variance analysis and mean differences studied. Parasitic genes were evaluated each 28 days and hematocrit determined at the fifth sampling. Both groups maintained low parasitic levels and finished the trial with similar loads. The animals gained weight along the experiment but the second and ninth sampling. No statistical differences were observed in all samplings. Haemonchus spp. and Trichostrongylus spp. prevailed, being Ostertagia spp., Cooperia spp. and Oesophagostomun spp. less important. Normal values for hematocrit and a negative correlation with eggs counts were found. It has been concluded that lambs with slight levels of parasite loads are capable of achieve good live weight gains on pastures with high nutritive levels, and that Plantago lanceolata is suitable for generating a good animal productivity. It could not be demonstrated that condensed tannins had acted on parasitic control.

INTRODUCTION We investigated whether apolipoprotein A1 (ApoA1) could better identify patients with severe vessel damage than HDL-cholesterol in a population with recent acute myocardial infarction (AMI). METHODS One hundred and forty-one male patients (mean age: 54.3 +/- 7.3 years) who had undergone coronary angiography within 3 weeks of an AMI were studied. Coronary angiography data were evaluated both anatomically (as single, double or multivessel disease) and by means of the Gensini score. The main lipid parameters were evaluated on admission to the Coronary Care Unit. RESULTS ApoA1 and the ApoA1/ApoB ratio (A1/B) mean values were significantly (P 18), there was a statistically significant difference for ApoA1 (P < 0.01), HDL-cholesterol and A1/B (P < 0.05): only this latter was able to discriminate between the two groups. The mean ApoA1 and A1/B (P < 0.01), Gensini score (P < 0.001) and total cholesterol/HDL-cholesterol (P < 0.05) values of patients in the single-vessel disease group differ from those both of double- and multivessel disease groups. A1/B is also able to discriminate between single- and double-vessel disease. DISCUSSION Our results confirm that ApoA1 and ApoA1/ApoB ratio are better than HDL-cholesterol in assessing the severity of coronary damage.
