Flow-like landslides, which occur mainly in shallow granular deposits resting on steep bedrock, represent a major natural hazard worldwide. The pore water pressure distribution and the soil water content directly affect the soil shear strength, thus controlling the triggering of these landslides. Criticalgeomorphological and topographical settings, together with peculiar stratigraphic and hydrogeological features, are commonly recognized as predisposing factors for flow-like landslides occurrence. Hence, investigating the spatial and temporal variability of hydraulic slope conditions is a fundamental activity that consists of identifying local geological factors and seasonal monitoring of the subsurface water regime. The present work proposes an integrated geological, geophysical and geotechnical approach to identify the spatial variability of the local stratigraphic setting and hydrogeological conditions in a partially saturated slope, in order to set up a procedure able to provide a prediction of the flow-like landslides occurrence atslope scale. The multidisciplinary study has been applied to a test site on Mt. Faito, in the Lattari Mts. (Southern Italy), where extensive geophysical, geological and geotechnical soil characterization and in situmonitoring data collected over two years are available.

Some questionnaires assessed sleep quality, psychological well-being, general psychopathology, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorders symptoms, and anxiety. The path analysis was adopted.Results: The study confirms a direct effect of some aspects ascribable to the pandemic, with a mediator role of the psychological variables. Lower sleep quality was directly related to the days spent at home in confinement and the knowledge of people affected by the COVID-19. All the other aspects related to the COVID-19 pandemic influenced sleep quality through the mediator effect of psychological variables.Conclusion: This study highlighted that the psychological condition of the population has been influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic and the government actions taken to contain it, but it has also played an important role in mediating the quality of sleep, creating a vicious circle on people’s health. The results suggest that a health emergency must be accompanied by adequate social support programs to mitigate the fear of infection and promote adequate resilience to accept confinement and social distancing. Studies on mindfulness in MCI subjects are sparse and frequently lack control intervention groups.Objective: To determine the feasibility and the effect of mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) practice on depression, cognition and immunity in MCI compared to cognitive training.Methods: Twenty-eight MCI subjects were randomly assigned to two groups. MBSR group underwent 8-week MBSR program. Control group underwent 8-week cognitive training. Their cognitive and immunological profiles and level of depressive symptoms were examined at baseline, after each 8-week intervention (visit 2, V2) and six months after each intervention (visit 3, V3). MBSR participants completed feasibility questionnaire at V2.Results: Twenty MCI patients completed the study (MBSR group n=12, control group n=8). MBSR group showed significant reduction in depressive symptoms at both V2 (p=0.03) and V3 (p=0.0461) compared to the baseline. There was a minimal effect on cognition – a group comparison analysis showed better psychomotor speed in the MBSR group compared to the control group at V2 (p=0.0493) but not at V3. There was a detectable change in immunological profiles in both groups, more pronounced in the MBSR group. Participants checked only positive/neutral answers concerning the attractivity/length of MBSR intervention. More severe cognitive decline (PVLT≤ 36) was associated with the lower adherence to home practice.Conclusion: MBSR is well-accepted potentially promising intervention with positive effect on cognition, depressive symptoms and immunological profile.Keywords: cognition, depression, anxiety, MCI, neurodegeneration, monocyte activation

The Anisian amber from the "Voltzia beds" of the Recoaro area, produced by Voltzia recubariensis, represents the most ancient Triassic amber known so far. The discovery of amber in the Anisian localities of Kühwiesenkopf/Monte Prà della Vacca and Piz da Peres, in the Dolomites area, fills a gap in the amber fossil record and contributes to the knowledge of Triassic amber. The finding of amber droplets, both dispersed in the sediment and anatomically connected to shoot fragments of V. recubariensis, demonstrates that during the Anisian this species was a resin-producer and that the favorable conditions for the preservation of resin and plant remains were present at regional scale. The contribution of Voltziales to Middle Triassic resin production in Northern Italy is also testified by the Ladinian amber from the "Wengener Schichten" of Wengen Formation, produced by Voltzia ladinica, whereas the Upper Triassic amber from Heiligkreuz Formation was mainly produced by cheirolepidiaceous conifers. The finding of an unidentified inclusion in the amber of Kühwiesenkopf/Monte Prà dalla Vacca is noteworthy, although difficult to interpret, and shows once again its capability to entrap and preserve witnesses of past life. Moreover, the correspondence between the Triassic amber occurrences and regional/global scale humid shifts, suggests a cause-and effect relationship, in which the rise of amber production/preservation potential is related to climate/environmental changes, particularly in marginal marine/coastal environments.

Abstract. Vitamin D is a secosteroid hormone that plays a pivotal role in several metabolic and reproductive pathways in humans. Increasing evidence supports the role of vitamin D deficiency in metabolic disturbances and infertility in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Indeed, supplementation with vitamin D seems to have a beneficial role on insulin resistance (IR) and endometrial receptivity. On the other hand, exceedingly high levels of vitamin D appear to play a detrimental role on oocytes development and embryo quality. In the current review, we summarize the available evidence about the topic, aiming to suggest the best supplementation strategy in women with PCOS or, more generally, in those with metabolic disturbances and infertility. Based on the retrieved data, vitamin D seems to have a beneficial role on IR, insulin sensitivity and endometrial receptivity, but high levels and incorrect timing of administration seem to have a detrimental role on oocytes development and embryo quality. Therefore, we encourage a low dose supplementation (400–800 IU/day) particularly in vitamin D deficient women that present metabolic disturbances like PCOS. As far as the reproductive health, we advise vitamin D supplementation in selected populations, only during specific moments of the ovarian cycle, to support the luteal phase. However, ambiguities about dosage and timing of the supplementation still emerge from the clinical studies published to date and further studies are required.

Lung cancer accounts for a quarter of all mortality cases worldwide. To date, numerous efforts have been done to identify the best therapeutic approach, especially in the advanced stage of the disease, and to extend the overall survival of patients. Careful surveillance of patients during therapy is essential in order to identify undesirable effects and to evaluate possible adverse reactions in case of coadministration. This study aims to compare two types of anticancer therapy, immunotherapy and chemotherapy, administered to NSCLC patients in the Medical Oncology Unit of the ARNAS “Di Cristina Benfratelli” Civic Hospital in Palermo (Italy), and to highlight the key role of clinical pharmacist in the management of anticancer therapies, by analysing the side effects in the short-term postadministration and the adverse drug reactions, in particular drug-drug interactions, in case of comorbidities.

We provide an analysis of the market data of the major cryptocurrencies by summing a multivariate hidden Markov process also known as the latent Markov process. We model jointly the daily log-returns of BTC, ETH, XRP, LTC, and BCH. The observed log-returns are assumed to be correlated according to a variance-covariance matrix conditionally on a latent Markov process of first-order having a discrete number of latent states. In order to compare states according to their volatility, we estimate the specific variance-covariance matrix of each state. Maximum likelihood estimation of the model parameters is carried out by the Expectation-Maximization algorithm. The latent states can be ordered according to expected average values of the log-returns and their estimated volatility. We consider different model specifications in terms of number of latent states, which are identified in terms of expected log-returns and level of volatility. Under each considered scenario we also predict the latent state by the maximum a posteriori rule.

The COVID-19 pandemic presents a serious public health challenge in all countries. However, repercussions of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infections on future global health are still being investigated, including the pandemic’s potential effect on the emergence and spread of global antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Critically ill COVID-19 patients may develop severe complications, which may predispose patients to infection with nosocomial bacterial and/or fungal pathogens, requiring the extensive use of antibiotics. However, antibiotics may also be inappropriately used in milder cases of COVID-19 infection. Further, concerns such as increased biocide use, antimicrobial stewardship/infection control, AMR awareness, the need for diagnostics (including rapid and point-of-care diagnostics) and the usefulness of vaccination could all be components shaping the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic. In this publication, the authors present a brief overview of the COVID-19 pandemic and associated issues that could influence the pandemic’s effect on global AMR.

D-chiro-Inositol has been widely used in clinical practice to induce ovulation in women with polycystic ovary syndrome. Only recent evidence established that this molecule acts through two different mechanisms, with potentially different outcomes. On the one hand, under a metabolic perspective, D-chiro-Inositol improves insulin signaling, thus restoring physiological insulin levels in resistant subjects. On the other hand, at a cellular level, it downregulates the expression of steroidogenic enzyme aromatase, which is responsible for the conversion of androgens to estrogens.We reviewed current literature in different databases, searching for D-chiro-Inositol in relation with one of the following keywords: myo-inositol, PCOS, infertility, insulin resistance, aromatase, androgen and inositol, testosterone, estrogen and inositol, estradiol, hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, fat tissue, estrogens and cancer, anovulation, uterine myoma, endometriosis, endometrial hyperplasia.D-Chiro-Inositol treatment may be helpful in restoring physiological hormonal levels in various clinical disorders. However, D-Chiro-Inositol intervention should be carefully designed to avoid possible undesired side effects stemming from its multiple mechanisms of action.We evaluated the optimal D Chiro-Inositol administration for different pathologies, defining dosages and timing. Even though further studies are required to validate our preliminary results, this paper is primarily intended to guide researchers through some of the pathways of D-Chiro-Inositol.

The breast cancer (BC) disease is characterized by a wide heterogeneity at both clinical and molecular level, showing distinct subtypes with different clinical outcomes. Thus, the choice of the therapeutic plan, such as the type of radiotherapy (RT) need to take into account this complexity. Indeed, the proton therapy (PT) shows a medical benefit compared to conventional X-ray RT, as regards the localized delivery of the radiation dose sparing health tissues, but few data regarding proton-induced molecular changes are currently available. The aim of this study was therefore to investigate the production of immunological molecules and gene expression profiles induced by proton irradiation on BC cell lines. Clonogenic survival assay, luminex assay and cDNA microarray gene expression analyses were performed both in the non-tumorigenic MCF10A cell line and in two tumorigenic MCF7 and MDA-MB-231 cell lines, following irradiation with 0.5, 2 and 9 Gy of clinical proton beams. We found that proton irradiation induced gene expression changes useful to define a cell line and dose-dependent gene signatures. The lack of molecular data in the literature can be filled by data here presented that could represent a useful tool to better understand the molecular mechanisms elicited by protons predicting the treatment outcome.

Material‐induced ossification is suggested as a suitable approach to heal large bone defects. Fiber‐reinforced composite–bioactive glasses (FRC‐BGs) display properties that could enhance the ossification of calvarial defects. Here, we analyzed the healing processes of a FRC‐BG implant in vivo from the perspective of material‐induced ossification. Histological analysis of the implant, which was removed 5 months after insertion, showed the formation of viable, noninflammatory mesenchymal tissue with newly‐formed mineralized woven bone, as well as nonmineralized connective tissue with capillaries and larger blood vessels. The presence of osteocytes was detected within the newly generated bone matrix. To expand our understanding on the osteogenic properties of FRC‐BG, we cultured human adipose tissue‐derived mesenchymal stromal cells (AD‐MSCs) in the presence of two different BGs (45S5 and S53P4) and Al2O3 control. AD‐MSCs grew and proliferated on all the scaffolds tested, as well as secreted abundant extracellular matrix, when osteogenic differentiation was appropriately stimulated. 45S5 and S53P4 induced enhanced expression of COL2A1, COL10A1, COL5A1 collagen subunits, and pro‐osteogenic genes BMP2 and BMP4. The concomitant downregulation of BMP3 was also detected. Our findings show that FRC‐BG can support the vascularization of the implant and the formation of abundant connective tissue in vivo. Specifically, BG 45S5 and BG S53P4 are suited to evoke the osteogenic potential of host mesenchymal stromal cells. In conclusion, FRC‐BG implant demonstrated material‐induced ossification both in vitro and in vivo.

A transition from widespread humid to more drought tolerant floras characterized tropical terrestrial ecosystems during the Permian (Cisuralian). Tregiovo (Southern Alps, N-Italy) is one of the very few well dated Kungurian (late Cisuralian) plant localities in Euramerica. It was located in eastern palaeoequatorial Pangea. Two units bearing fossil plant assemblages occur in finely laminated sediments deposited in a playa-lake environment. In this paper, the sedimentology of the Tregiovo Basin is reviewed, and new palaeobotanical, palynological and stable isotopic data are presented, in order to reconstruct the palaeoclimatic and palaeoenvironmental conditions of the Kungurian in the Southern Alps. Both fossil plant assemblages are dominated by conifers (Hermitia, Feysia, Quadrocladus, Dolomitia), together with sphenophytes (Annularia), ginkgophytes (Sphenobaiera), pteridosperms (Peltaspermum), taeniopterids and sphenopterids. These taxa, which occur with different abundances in the two plant assemblages, both indicate semi-arid conditions. Associated palynofiora, dominated by bisaccate pollen, and extremely rare spore occurrences, is consistent with the xerophytic character of the macroflora, and suggests that the fossil plant record was not affected by collection or preservation bias. Stable isotopic analyses of two stratigraphic sections reveal an upward trend of increasingly negative delta C-13(org) (VPDB), which may correlate with roughly coeval records from marine and continental successions such as in North China and South Africa. This isotopic shift may be attributed to a global perturbation of atmospheric delta C-13, although the influence of local environmental factors cannot be excluded.

Breast cancer (BC) recovery has increased in recent years thanks to efforts of Omics-based research in this field. However, despite the important results obtained, BC remains a complex multifactorial pathology that is difficult to treat appropriately. Caveolin-1 (CAV1), the basic constituent protein of specialized plasma membrane invaginations called caveolae, is emerging as a potential therapeutic biomarker in BC. This factor may modulate BC response to chemotherapy and radiation therapy. In addition, recent reports describe the key role of CAV1 during cell response to oxidative stress. The aim of the present review was to describe the biological roles of CAV1 in BC considering its contrasting dual functions as an oncogene and as a tumor suppressor. In addition, we report on how CAV1 may contribute to tumor cell response to ionizing radiation treatment. Finally, new roles of CAV1 in BC both on epithelium and stroma may be useful as prognostic indicators for patient treatment and help clinicians in the selection of the best personalized therapy.

A vinyl-terminated polycaprolactone has been developed for tissue engineering applications using a one-step synthesis and functionalization method based on ring opening polymerization (ROP) of ?-Caprolactone, with hydroxyl ethyl vinyl ether (HEVE) acting both as the initiator of ROP and as photo-curable functional group. The proposed method employs a catalyst based on aluminium, instead of the most popular Tin(II) 2-ethylhexanoate, to reduce the cytotoxicity. Following the synthesis of the vinyl-terminated polycaprolactone, its reaction with fumaryl chloride (FuCl) results in a divinyl-fumarate polycaprolactone (VPCLF). The polymers obtained were thoroughly characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and gel permeation chromatography (GPC) techniques. The polymer has been successfully employed, in combination with N-vinyl pyrrolidone (NVP), to fabricate films and computer-designed porous scaffolds by micro-stereolithography (?-SL) with gyroid and diamond architectures. Characterization of the networks indicated the influence of NVP content on the network properties. Human mesenchymal stem cells adhered and spread onto VPCLF/NVP networks showing good biological properties and no cytotoxic effect. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

The central Italy earthquakes occurred on 26 and 30 October 2016. The Italy-US GEER team effort combines traditional reconnaissance activities of on-ground recording and mapping of field conditions, with advanced imaging and damage detection routines enabled by state-of-the-art geomatics technology. We describe preliminary findings useful for the broad technical community, emergency responders, and general public. These findings concern attributes of the causative fault system, surface fault rupture, recorded ground motions, landslides and rockfalls, damage to building structures and their spatial patterns, and damage to other types of structures, including bridges.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is a process co-opted by cancer cells to invade and form metastases. In the present study we analyzed gene expression profiles of primary breast cancer cells in culture in order to highlight genes related to EMT. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Microarray expression analysis of primary cells isolated from a specimen of a patient with an infiltrating ductal carcinoma of the breast was performed. Real-Time Quantitative Reverse Transcription PCR (qRT-PCR) analyses validated microarray gene expression trends. RESULTS: Thirty-six candidate genes were selected and used to generate a molecular network displaying the tight relationship among them. The most significant Gene Ontology biological processes characterizing this network were involved in cell migration and motility. CONCLUSION: Our data revealed the involvement of new genes which displayed tight relationships among them, suggesting a molecular network in which they could contribute to control of EMT in breast cancer. This study may offer a basis for understanding complex mechanisms which regulate breast cancer progression and for designing individualized anticancer therapies. is a process co-opted by cancer cells to invade and form metastases. Purpose: Previous studies have shown that inhibition of the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway with rapamycin prevents epileptogenesis after pharmacologically induced status epilepticus (SE) in rat models of temporal lobe epilepsy. Because rapamycin is also known for its immunosuppressant properties we hypothesized that one of the mechanisms by which it exerts this effect could be via suppression of brain inflammation, a process that has been suggested to play a major role in the development and progression of epilepsy. Methods: Rats were treated with rapamycin or vehicle once daily for 7 days (6 mg/kg/day, i.p.) starting 4 h after the induction of SE, which was evoked by electrical stimulation of the angular bundle. Hereafter rapamycin was administered every other day until rats were sacrificed, 6 weeks after SE. Video-electroencephalography was used to monitor the occurrence of seizures. Neuronal death, synaptic reorganization, and microglia and astrocyte activation were assessed by immunohistologic staining. Fluorescein was administered to quantify blood-brain barrier leakage. Key Findings: Rapamycin treatment did not alter SE severity and duration compared to vehicle treatment rats. Rapamycin-treated rats developed hardly (n = 9) or no (n = 3) seizures during the 6-week treatment, whereas vehicle-treated rats showed a progressive increase of seizures starting 1 week after SE (mean 8 +/- 2 seizures per day during the sixth week). Cell loss and sprouting that normally occur after SE were prominent but on average significantly less in rapamycin-treated rats versus vehicle-treated rats. Nevertheless, various inflammation markers (CD11b/c and CD68) were dramatically upregulated and not significantly different between post-SE groups. Of interest, blood-brain barrier leakage was barely detected in the rapamycin-treated group, whereas it was prominent in the vehicle-treated group. Significance: mTOR inhibition led to strong reduction of seizure development despite the presence of microglia activation, suggesting that effects of rapamycin on seizure development are not due to a control of inflammation. Whether the effects on blood-brain barrier leakage in rapamycin-treated rats are a consequence of seizure suppressing properties of the drug, or contribute to a real antiepileptogenic effect still needs to be determined.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the surgical treatment of acute pancreatitis in Italy and to assess compliance with international guidelines. METHODS: A series of 1173 patients in 56 hospitals were prospectively enrolled and their data analysed. RESULTS: Twenty-nine patients with severe pancreatitis underwent surgical intervention. Necrosectomy was performed in 26 patients, associated with postoperative lavage in 70% of cases. A feeding jejunostomy was added in 37% of cases. Mortality was 21%. Of the patients with mild pancreatitis, 714 patients with a biliary aetiology were evaluated. Prophylactic treatment of relapses was carried out in 212 patients (36%) by cholecystectomy and in 161 using a laparoscopic approach. Preoperative endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography was associated with cholecystectomy in 83 patients (39%). Forty-seven patients (22%) were treated at a second admission, with a median delay of 31 days from the onset of pancreatitis. Eighteen patients with severe pancreatitis underwent cholecystectomy 37.9 days after the first admission. There were no deaths. DISCUSSION: The results indicate poor compliance with published guidelines. In severe pancreatitis, early surgical intervention is frequently performed and enteral feeding is seldom used. Only a small number of patients with mild biliary pancreatitis undergo definitive treatment (i.e. cholecystectomy) within 4 weeks of the onset of pancreatitis.

In this paper, a level II approach aimed at evaluating the impact of the triggering potential of seismic landslides on a regional roadway network is described. The case study is located within the Southern Apennines in Molise Region (Italy). A seismic vulnerability assessment through fragility curves was performed. Its capability to provide useful data in view of territory planning and/or emergency management was explored by means of the implementation in GIS environment.

The paper is on the culture of illegality, unfortunately a very widespread event in Southern Italy, where it represents one of the most considerable obstacles to the economic and social development of area. Who has been already running a business in Southern Italy has a hard life and, moreover, who could run a business there, gives up and turns elsewhere, he prefers countries or areas where public institutions are considered more reliable by businessmen. The analysis focus on Camorra, an organized criminal group especially active in Campania, and it shows how various types of illegality (mafia-style crime, weak legality, common crime and corruption) can become both entwined and stronger reciprocally. Some "production" has become possible and highly profitable because in a certain territorial and social context the violations of commercial, environmental, town-planning or black-market work related regulations have been substantially and systematically tolerated, and this has allowed the clan to thrive and to increase its dangerousness. Thus, the comparison between Cosa Nostra's and Camorra's activities shows as well the necessity of strongly diversifying the analysis of the economic effects of illegality, considering the types of mafia-style organizations, territories, types of production, types of markets, types of businesses. For instance, what is observable in Campania doesn't happen exactly similar in Sicily, or in Calabria, where other illegal organizations are more deep-rooted.

Recognition of the framework of complex aquifer systems is a key topic to analyse groundwater conditions and contaminant transport in heterogeneous and anisotropic aquifers. Groundwater models are useful tools for management and protection of water resources, but their predictive function is often constrained by a deficient characterization of hydrogeological parameters at a local scale. A wide variety of structural, volcanic and depositional processes produce a composite spatial distribution of hydraulic conductivity in alluvial aquifer systems. Groundwater flow and solute transport simulation in similar multilayer systems of several aquifers, aquitards and aquiclude needs a vast amount of observed data. Many tools for the knowledge of lithologic and stratigraphic features and of spatial heterogeneity at different scales are available, but it is essential to improve the hydrofacies models including in situ testing procedures that would better treat the rock strata connectivity and the geometry of aquifers. With regard to coastal alluvial aquifer system of the Sarno River plain (South Italy), this paper points out a multidisciplinary approach to delineate aquifer/aquitard unit and depict a realistic 3D modelling of the hydrogeological heterogeneity using geological, hydrogeological and geophysical techniques. Namely, due to its composite hydrodynamic conditions and to the high human impact, it has been chosen the sector of this plain located at the river mouth. Accordingly, this paper presents some interesting aspects to quantify the relationship between geophysical parameters and hydrostratigraphic properties of a highly heterogeneous alluvial aquifer system.
