Straipsnio objektas – iki šiol netyrinėti Trakų vėlyvųjų viduramžių juvelyriniai dirbiniai. Įvertinus tyrime turimus medžiaginius šaltinius ir rašytinių liudijimų stoką, pasirenkama formalioji juvelyrikos analizė, kuri pildoma interpretacija apie dirbinių kultūrinį kontekstą. Taip siekiama juvelyriką interpretuoti kaip istorinį Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės (toliau – LDK) vėlyvųjų viduramžių amatų ir kasdienės kultūros šaltinį. The object of this paper is medieval jewellery from the Trakai parish church, which still remains the least studied in the scholarly field. By analysing the material aspect and the cultural context of the object, the paper tries to examine its historical value for the studies of the crafts and customary culture of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania during the Late Medieval Period. First of all, rings are analysed, concentrating on their form, production technique and, especially, function. It is worth mentioning a ring with a crystal eye, whose size and construction, as well as its rich decoration and luxurious materials enable us to hypothesize about its function as a ring-reliquary. The flat decorated surface of another ring would supposedly point to its usage as a signet ring. The group of earrings is interesting by their luxurious materials, high craftsmanship and forms reminiscent of the Balkan traditions of the craft. Meanwhile, the analysis of the cultural context of the jewellery reveals its “multicultural” aspect, when the traditions of the craft from different cultures forgather. Moreover, a cross, found in the presbytery of the church with Victorious Cross iconography and Catholic and Orthodox symbols enables us to think about a complex bi-confessional reality and manifestation of the Church Union politics in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania during the Middle Ages.

1502 m. didysis Lietuvos kunigaikštis Aleksandras (1492-1506) savo sekretoriui, rusėnų didikui Jonui Sapiegai (m. 1517) dovanojo Kauno ir Vilkijos valsčiuose prie Dievogalos upelio esančią žemę. Ant kalno, netoli upelio, Sapiega statėsi dvarą, o Nemuno slėnyje kūrė miestelį, kuriame vėliau sumūryta gotikinė Šv. Jono Krikštytojo bažnyčia. Straipsnyje keliama šventovės istorijos socialinę problematiką: stačiatikis didikas funduoja parapinę bažnyčią miestelėnams katalikams, o bažnyčios pastatas sumūrijamas didžiųjų LDK miestų architektūrai būdingu vėlyvosios gotikos stiliumi. Pradžioje ypatingas dėmesys skiriamas gotikinės architektūros atsiradimui mažame miestelyje. Zapyškio ir kitų LDK gotikinių bažnyčių lyginamoji analizė atskleidė Zapyškio ir Kauno gotikinės architektūros, ypač XVI a. pradžioje statytų bažnyčių, ryšius. Taigi bažnyčios statybų pradžią sieti su Zapyškio dvarą ir miestelį įkūrusiu didiku Jonu Sapiega, valdžiusiu žemes 1502-1517 m. Keliama hipotezė, kad Zapyškio gotikinė architektūra buvo perimta iš Kauno dėl artimos kaimynystės ir stiprių prekybinių ryšių tarp abiejų gyvenviečių. Svarbūs ištekliai – plytos ar meistrai – galėjo atvykti iš Kauno į Zapyškį Nemunu. Taip pat tyrimo metu bandyta išnagrinėti, kodėl stačiatikis didikas fundavo katalikų bažnyčią. Teigiama, kad šis įdomus faktas gali būti aiškinamas Jono Sapiegos unitiškomis pažiūromis – steigdamas katalikų bažnyčią rusėnas didikas rodė savo unitišką palankumą katalikybei. Be to, Jono Sapiegos šventovių fundacijos Ikaznėje bei Kodenyje XVI a. pradžioje leidžia svarstyti ir unitų bažnyčios Zapyškyje fundacijos galimybes. In 1502 the Grand Duke of Lithuania Alexander (r. 1492–1506) donated the land near Kaunas, known as Zapyškis, to his clerk Jonas Sapiega (Ivan Sapieha, d. 1517). Here, on a hill by the river Dievogala, Sapiega established a manor and founded a town on the left bank of the Nemunas River, where a Gothic parish church was subsequently constructed. The paper aims to examine the social issues of the foundation of the Gothic parish church in Zapyškis, as it was unusual for an Orthodox nobleman to establish a Catholic church for his Catholic townspeople, and the church was built in the Late Gothic style, characteristic to the cities of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. First, special attention is paid to the introduction of Gothic architecture into a small town. A comparison of the architecture of the Zapyškis church and other Gothic churches in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania reveals a collection of common features connecting the Zapyškis parish church with the Gothic churches of the neighboring city of Kaunas, especially with those built in the early 16th century. Thus, it is possible to relate the construction of the Zapyškis church with the period of 1502–1517 when Jonas Sapiega owned the town. The hypothesis is put forward that the Gothic architecture was "imported" to Zapyškis from Kaunas due to the neighbourhood and strong trade connections between both settlements. Such important resources as bricks or craftsmen could reach Zapyškis from the city of Kaunas via the main trade route of the river Nemunas. The research also tries to solve the puzzle of the foundation of a Catholic church in the land of an Orthodox nobleman. It is suggested that the curious fact could be explained by the pro-Uniate orientation of Jonas Sapiega – it was in this way that the Orthodox nobleman both took care of his Catholic servants and showed his leaning towards Catholicism. Moreover, the foundation of Uniate churches in Ikazn and Koden by Jonas Sapiega in the early 16th century, enables one to consider the possibillity of a Uniate church in Zapyškis as well.

1578 m. Povilo Sapiegos aprūpinimo Zapyškio parapijai aktas, kurio originalas neišlikęs, tačiau žinoma Lomžos vyskupijos archyve saugoma liudijimo kopija, laikytinas ankstyviausiu šiandien turimu tiesioginiu rašytiniu šaltiniu apie parapiją bei jai priklausiusias Zapyškio ir Gelgaudiškio bažnyčias. Iki šiol nepublikuotas, o ankstesniuose tyrimuose interpretuotas dar gana fragmentiškai ir nevienareikšmiškai3, dokumentas neabejotinai svarbus Zapyškio parapijos ir bažnyčios istorijai. Be to, aktas aktualus kaip šaltiniotyros objektas, leidžiantis kelti šaltinio funkcionavimo ir konteksto klausimus. Šiuo straipsniu siekiu ne tik paskelbti 1578 m. aprūpinimo akto Zapyškio parapijai kopijos nuorašą, bet ir jį pildyti šaltinio vertimu į lietuvių kalbą bei faktografiniu ir kritiniu komentaru. Publikacijoje stengiuosi šaltinį perteikti kuo autentiškiau, dėl to laikausi originalo rašybos ir skyrybos. Dokumentą verčiu pažodžiui, tačiau, siekdama teksto sklandumo, taikau ir lietuvių kalbos gramatikos normas – prireikus keičiu sakinio struktūrą, įterpiu praleistą žodį, suvienodinu skyrybą. The paper aims to examine Povilas Sapiega’s donation for Zapyškis parish in the year 1578 as it is the oldest known historical written source of the parish and its churches of Zapyškis and Gelgaudiškis. First, the text of the donation copy and its translation into Lithuanian language are given. Then, the publication is supplemented by a comment. Special attention is paid to the issues of the origin of the document. It is suggested that the donation copy was done in the year 1796 in the context of foundation of a new diocese of Vygriai. The paper also tries to comment the content of the document, which reveals historical circumstances of the development of Zapyškis parish and church. It is offered that in the year 1578 Povilas Sapiega supplied for the first time the parish and church, which had been founded by his father Jonas Sapiega. Moreover, the details of supply are disputed.
