Abstract

International audience; Tractography in Diffusion-Weighted MRI provides a unique quantitative measurement of the brain's anatomical connectivity using information not available from other imaging techniques. Many tractography algorithms are based on local fiber orientation estimates, such as streamline methods, and are vulnerable to noise and partial volume effects; fiber crossing and kissing are also difficult to distinguish. This led to the development of probabilistic techniques [1] and global approaches relying on front propagation [2, 3] or simulation of the diffusion process [4]. In this work, we present a global approach based on the voting process provided by the Hough transform [5]. Our proposed tractography algorithm essentially tests all possible 3D curves in the volume, assigning a score to each of them, then selecting the curves with the highest scores, and returning them as the potential anatomical connections. We present experimental results on both artificial and real diffusion tensor images (DTI) and high-angular resolution diffusion images (HARDI).

Abstract

This paper presents a new method to extract a network of vessels centerlines from a medical image. The network is composed of local geodesics over a four-dimensional space that includes local orientation and scale. These shortest paths follow closely the center of vessels and can deal robustly with crossings over the image plane. The vessel network is grown by an iterative algorithm that distributes seed points according to a geodesic saliency field. Numerical experiments on a database of synthetic and medical images show the superiority of our approach with respect to several methods based on shortest paths extractions. % With a minimum of user interaction, it allows to compute a complex network of vessels over noisy medical images.

Abstract

The accurate solution of the forward electrostatic problem is an essential first step before solving the inverse problem of magneto- and electro-encephalography (MEG/EEG). The symmetric Galerkin boundary element method is accurate but is difficule to use for very large problems because of its computational complexity and memory requirements. We describe a fast multipole-based acceleration for the symmetric BEM with complexity. It creates a hierarchical structure of the elements and approximates far interactions using spherical harmonics expansions. The accelerated method is shown to be as accurate as the direct method, yet for large problems it is both faster and more economical in terms of memory consumption.

Abstract

We present a new variational method for multi-view stereovision and non-rigid three-dimensional motion estimation from multiple video sequences. Our method minimizes the prediction error of the estimated shape and motion. Both problems then translate into a generic image registration task. The latter is entrusted to a similarity measure chosen depending on imaging conditions and scene properties. In particular, our method can be made robust to appearance changes due to non-Lambertian materials and illumination changes. Our method results in a simpler, more flexible, and more efficient implementation than existing deformable surface approaches. The computation time on large datasets does not exceed thirty minutes. Moreover, our method is compliant with a hardware implementation with graphics processor units. Our stereovision algorithm yields very good results on a variety of datasets including specularities and translucency. We have successfully tested our scene flow algorithm on a very challenging multi-view video sequence of a non-rigid event.

Abstract

In this report, we overcome a major drawback of the level set framework: the lack of point correspondences. We maintain explicit backward correspondences from the evolving interface to the initial one by advecting the initial point coordinates with the same velocity as the level set function. Our method leads to a system of coupled Eulerian partial differential equations. We show in a variety of numerical experiments that it can handle both normal and tangential velocities, large deformations, shocks, rarefactions and topological changes. Applications are many since our method can upgrade virtually any level set evolution. We complement our work with the design of non zero tangential velocities that preserve the relative area of interface patches; this feature may be crucial in such applications as computational geometry, grid generation or unfolding of the organs' surfaces, e.g. brain, in medical imaging. This report also tackles a diffeomorphic approach to level set evolution, a family of volume-preserving smoothing flows, and some numerical aspects of the intrinsic heat flow on implicit surfaces.
