Natural thermal and mineral waters are widely distributed along the Hellenic region and are related to the geodynamic regime of the country. The diverse lithological and tectonic settings they are found in reflect the great variability in their chemical and isotopic composition. The current study presents 276 (published and unpublished) trace element water data and discusses the sources and processes affecting the water by taking into consideration the framework of their geographic distribution. The dataset is divided in groups using temperature- and pH-related criteria. Results yield a wide range of concentrations, often related to the solubility properties of the individual elements and the factors impacting them (i.e. temperature, acidity, redox conditions and salinity). Many elements (e.g. alkalis, Ti, Sr, As and Tl) present a good correlation with temperature, which is in cases impacted by water rock interactions, while others (e.g. Be, Al, Cu, Se, Cd) exhibit either no relation or an inverse correlation with T possibly because they become oversaturated at higher temperatures in solid phases. A moderately constant inverse correlation is noticed for the vast majority of trace elements and pH, whereas no relationship between trace element concentrations and Eh was found. Seawater contamination and water-rock interaction seem to be the main natural processes that influence both salinity and elemental content. All in all, Greek thermomineral waters exceed occasionally the accepted limits representing in such cases serious harm to the environment and probably indirectly (through the water cycle) to human health.

Growing global demand for learning a second language (L2), particularly English, has led to considerable interest in automatic spoken language assessment, whether for use in computerassisted language learning (CALL) tools or for grading candidates for formal qualifications. This thesis presents research conducted into the automatic assessment of spontaneous nonnative English speech, with a view to be able to provide meaningful feedback to learners. One of the challenges in automatic spoken language assessment is giving candidates feedback on particular aspects, or views, of their spoken language proficiency, in addition to the overall holistic score normally provided. Another is detecting pronunciation and other types of errors at the word or utterance level and feeding them back to the learner in a useful way. It is usually difficult to obtain accurate training data with separate scores for different views and, as examiners are often trained to give holistic grades, single-view scores can suffer issues of consistency. Conversely, holistic scores are available for various standard assessment tasks such as Linguaskill. An investigation is thus conducted into whether assessment scores linked to particular views of the speaker’s ability can be obtained from systems trained using only holistic scores. End-to-end neural systems are designed with structures and forms of input tuned to single views, specifically each of pronunciation, rhythm, intonation and text. By training each system on large quantities of candidate data, individual-view information should be possible to extract. The relationships between the predictions of each system are evaluated to examine whether they are, in fact, extracting different information about the speaker. Three methods of combining the systems to predict holistic score are investigated, namely averaging their predictions and concatenating and attending over their intermediate representations. The combined graders are compared to each other and to baseline approaches. The tasks of error detection and error tendency diagnosis become particularly challenging when the speech in question is spontaneous and particularly given the challenges posed by the inconsistency of human annotation of pronunciation errors. An approach to these tasks is presented by distinguishing between lexical errors, wherein the speaker does not know how a particular word is pronounced, and accent errors, wherein the candidate’s speech exhibits consistent patterns of phone substitution, deletion and insertion. Three annotated corpora x of non-native English speech by speakers of multiple L1s are analysed, the consistency of human annotation investigated and a method presented for detecting individual accent and lexical errors and diagnosing accent error tendencies at the speaker level.

Distributional shift, or the mismatch between training and deployment data, is a significant obstacle to the usage of machine learning in high-stakes industrial applications, such as autonomous driving and medicine. This creates a need to be able to assess how robustly ML models generalize as well as the quality of their uncertainty estimates. Standard ML baseline datasets do not allow these properties to be assessed, as the training, validation and test data are often identically distributed. Recently, a range of dedicated benchmarks have appeared, featuring both distributionally matched and shifted data. Among these benchmarks, the Shifts dataset stands out in terms of the diversity of tasks as well as the data modalities it features. While most of the benchmarks are heavily dominated by 2D image classification tasks, Shifts contains tabular weather forecasting, machine translation, and vehicle motion prediction tasks. This enables the robustness properties of models to be assessed on a diverse set of industrial-scale tasks and either universal or directly applicable task-specific conclusions to be reached. In this paper, we extend the Shifts Dataset with two datasets sourced from industrial, high-risk applications of high societal importance. Specifically, we consider the tasks of segmentation of white matter Multiple Sclerosis lesions in 3D magnetic resonance brain images and the estimation of power consumption in marine cargo vessels. Both tasks feature ubiquitous distributional shifts and a strict safety requirement due to the high cost of errors. These new datasets will allow researchers to further explore robust generalization and uncertainty estimation in new situations. In this work, we provide a description of the dataset and baseline results for both tasks.

Εισαγωγή: H πυομήτρα μπορεί να οδηγήσει σε σήψη και στο λεγόμενο Σύνδρομο Πολυοργανικής Δυσλειτουργίας (Multiple Organ Dysfunction Syndrome, MODS). Οι ανάλογοι των Toll υποδοχείς ή Toll-like υποδοχείς (Toll-Like Receptors, TLRs) μπορούν να αναγνωρίσουν συγκεκριμένες δομές ορισμένων παθογόνων που προκαλούν πυομήτρα. Σκοπός της παρούσας διδακτορικής διατριβής είναι να διερευνήσει τον ρόλο των TLR7 και TLR9 υποδοχέων στην μήτρα και τους πνεύμονες σε σηπτικά μοντέλα πυομήτρας μυών, μέσω του NF-kB και του MYD88-εξαρτώμενου σηματοδοτικού μονοπατιού στις ομάδες ελέγχου και στις ομάδες αφαίρεσης της μήτρας μετά την πρόκληση πυομήτρας. Μεθοδολογία: Στην κύρια φάση της παρούσας πειραματικής μελέτης χρησιμοποιήθηκαν 200 θήλεις μύες γενετικού υποστρώματος C57BL/6J, που τυχαιοποιήθηκαν σε ομάδες ανάλογα με την μέρα της ευθανασίας μετά την πρόκληση πυομήτρας (N=10/υποομάδα; SH1, SH2, SH3, SH7; P1, P2, P3, P7; 1RP1,1RP2, 1RP3, 1RP7; 2RP1, 2RP2, 2RP3, 2RP7; 3RP1, 3RP2, 3RP3, 3RP7). Η ανάπτυξη του σηπτικού μοντέλου πυομήτρας πραγματοποιήθηκε μέσω της χορήγησης παθογόνων μικροοργανισμών στις ομάδες πυομήτρας (P) και στις ομάδες αφαίρεσης μήτρας μετά την πρόκληση πυομήτρας (RP) των ζωικών προτύπων. Αποτελέσματα: Κατά την διάρκεια της μελέτης παρατηρήθηκαν αρκετές στατιστικά σημαντικές διαφορές στους αιματολογικούς βιοδείκτες, στην ιστολογική ανάλυση στην μήτρα και τους πνεύμονες των ζωικών προτύπων σύσταση και διαφορές στην έκφραση του mRNA στις ομάδες πυομήτρας (P) και στις ομάδες αφαίρεσης της μήτρας μετά την πρόκληση πυομήτρας (RP). Επιπλέον, παρατηρήθηκαν σημαντικές συσχετίσεις μεταξύ των MyD88, NF-κB και TLR9 στους πνεύμονες των ομάδων πυομήτρας (P) και των ομάδων αφαίρεσης μήτρας μετά την πρόκληση πυομήτρας (RP) των ζωικών προτύπων, καθώς και στην μήτρα των ομάδων αφαίρεσης μήτρας μετά την πρόκληση πυομήτρας (RP), γεγονός που δείχνει ότι η ανοσολογική απόκριση επιτυγχάνεται μέσω του μονοπατιού TLR9-MyD88. Συμπέρασμα: Η παρούσα έρευνα αποτελεί την πρώτη πειραματική μελέτη της έκφρασης mRNA των TLR7, TLR9, MyD88 και NF-κΒ σε μύες που πάσχουν από πυομήτρα και κατέδειξε ότι η έκφραση των συγκεκριμένων μορίων στην μήτρα μοντέλων πυομήτρας μυών πορεί να οδηγήσει σε βλάβη των πνευμόνων των ζωικών προτύπων. Background: Pyometra leads to sepsis and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS). Toll like receptors (TLRs) recognize pathogens which can cause pyometra. The aim of this study was to investigate TLR-7 and -9 via the MYD88 pathway and the NFκB response in the uterus of a pyometra mice model before and after ovariohysterectomy as well as potential lung injury. Materials and Methods: 200 female C57BL / 6J mice were randomly divided in groups (N=10/subgroup; SH1, SH2, SH3, SH7; P1, P2, P3, P7; 1RP1,1RP2, 1RP3, 1RP7; 2RP1, 2RP2, 2RP3, 2RP7; 3RP1, 3RP2, 3RP3, 3RP7) according to the day of euthanasia. Pathogens were administrated in the groups P and RP in order to induce pyometra. Results: Alterations in blood, histopathology and qRT-PCT analysis before (P) and after ovariohysterectomy (RP) were observed. Significant correlations were also found between MYD88, NFκB and TLR-9 in P and RP groups in the lungs and in RP groups in the uterus, suggesting that the immune system responded via the TLR-9-MYD88 pathway. Conclusions: This is the first report of immunohistochemical TLR-7 and -9 localization, and of TLR-7, -9, MYD88, and NFκB mRNA expression in the uterus causing lung injury in a pyometra mice model.

Περίληψη: Το αντικείμενο της παρούσας διπλωματικής εργασίας, είναι η μοντελοποίηση της πειραματικής διαδικασίας σεισμικής ανάκλασης στο προγραμματιστικό περιβάλλον της Matlab σε περιοχή που εξελίχθηκε η κατολίσθηση του Vajont. Στα πρώτα κεφάλαια περιγράφεται η περιοχή μελέτης και καλύπτεται το απαραίτητο θεωρητικό υπόβαθρο. Στη συνέχεια ακολουθείται η περιγραφή της μοντελοποίησης με τη βοήθεια του προγράμματος Autocad. Από εργασίες ερευνητών της περιοχής συλλέχθηκαν οι συντεταγμένες και τα υπόλοιπα απαραίτητα στοιχεία για την διαδικασία αυτή. Αφότου δημιουργήθηκε το μοντέλο της περιοχής μελέτης εισάχθηκε στο προγραμματιστικό περιβάλλον της Matlab και εκτελέστηκε το πείραμα της σεισμικής ανάκλασης. Συλλέχθηκαν τα απαραίτητα δεδομένα από τη Matlab. Δηλαδή οι χρόνοι των ανακλώμενων κυμάτων μέσω των συνθετικών δεδομένων για τις εκάστοτε σεισμικές γραμμές μελέτης. Εν ακολουθία τα δεδομένα επεξεργάστηκαν. Έγινε εκτίμηση των μέσων τετραγωνικών ταχυτήτων VRMS με τις οποίες δημιουργήθηκε δρομοχρονικό διάγραμμα. Με τη βοήθεια του διαγράμματος αναγνωρίστηκαν τα απευθείας κύματα του πρώτου στρώματος τα οποία αποκόπηκαν για τη μείωση θορύβου στα δεδομένα. Το επόμενο στάδιο ηταν η δημιουργία μοντέλου μέσης τετραγωνικής ταχύτητας (VRMS) ώστε να εκτελεστεί χωροθέτηση κατά Kirchhoff δεδομένων κοινής πηγής. Έτσι εξασφαλίζεται η ανακατασκευή των ανακλαστήρων και η σωστή τοποθέτησή τους. Στο πρώτο μέρος της διεργασίας εκτελούνταν χωροθέτηση των δεδομένων κοινής πηγής σε κάθε μία πηγή ξεχωριστά και στην συνέχεια υπερθέτονταν τα δεδομένα από όλες τις πηγές, με αποτέλεσμα την διαμόρφωση της χωροθετημένης σεισμικής τομής. Για την εκτέλεση της παραπάνω διαδικασίας αναπτύχθηκε αλγόριθμος στο περιβάλλον της Matlab. Ακολούθησαν αρκετές δοκιμές αλλάζοντας το εύρος των καταγραφών και επηρεάζοντας τον παράγοντα της ταχύτητας, ετσι αποκτήθηκε πλήθος σεισμικών καταγραφών. Οι καταγραφές υπερτέθηκαν με το μοντέλο ταχυτήτων ως προς τον χρόνο που δημιουργήθηκε ετσι ώστε να αξιολογηθούν τα αποτελέσματα.

Greece is a region characterised by intense geodynamic activity that favours the circulation of hydrothermal fluids in the crust transporting volatiles from either the deep crust or the mantle to the surface. Elevated heat flow values are detectable at Sperchios Basin and North Euboea (central Greece), two areas defined by a system of deeply rooted extensional faults and Quaternary volcanic activity. This setting contributed to the formation of numerous hydrothermal systems, which are mostly expressed as CO2-rich thermal springs with intense bubbling. The CO2 output from six bubbling pools has been determined by flux measurements with the use of the floating chamber method. The highest bubbling CO2 output has been found at Thermopyles and Psoroneria (0.6 and 0.84 t/d, respectively), where the outgoing channels have an elevated flow (>250 l/s) of gas-charged water (>15 mmol/l of CO2). Although no bubbling is noticed along the stream, the CO2 content decreases by an order of magnitude after few hundreds of metres, indicating an intense degassing from the water. Taking into account the water flow and the amount of CO2 lost to the atmosphere, the CO2 output of the outgoing channels is quantified in 12.5 t/d for Thermopyles and 9.23 t/d for Psoroneria. Output estimation has also been made for the other springs of the area. The diffuse CO2 release from the outgoing channels has always been higher respect to that of the visible bubbling, suggesting that most of the degassing is “hidden”. Furthermore, the loss of CO2 from the water has determined a shift in dissolved carbonate species as demonstrated by the pH increase along the channel that led eventually to an oversaturation in carbonate minerals and therefore travertine deposition. The total CO2 output to the atmosphere of the study area is estimated at ~27 t/d, with the major contribution deriving from the degassing along the outflow channels of the thermal springs. Such output is comparable to that of the single active volcanic systems along the South Aegean Active Volcanic Arc and highlights the importance of “hidden” degassing along CO2-oversaturated streams.

This chapter describes the development of algorithms for automatic detection of anomalies from multi-dimensional, undersampled and incomplete datasets. The challenge in this work is to identify and classify behaviours as normal or abnormal, safe or threatening, from an irregular and often heterogeneous sensor network. Many defence and civilian applications can be modelled as complex networks of interconnected nodes with unknown or uncertain spatio-temporal relations. The behavior of such heterogeneous networks can exhibit dynamic properties, reflecting evolution in both network structure (new nodes appearing and existing nodes disappearing), as well as inter-node relations. The UDRC work has addressed not only the detection of anomalies, but also the identification of their nature and their statistical characteristics. Normal patterns and changes in behavior have been incorporated to provide an acceptable balance between true positive rate, false positive rate, performance and computational cost. Data quality measures have been used to ensure the models of normality are not corrupted by unreliable and ambiguous data. The context for the activity of each node in complex networks offers an even more efficient anomaly detection mechanism. This has allowed the development of efficient approaches which not only detect anomalies but which also go on to classify their behaviour.

INTRODUCTION: Benign metastasizing leiomyomas represent benign lesions consisted by leiomatosous tissue and could be observed in positions away from their usual localization, the human uterus. They commonly affect women that have undergone total hysterectomy. Approximately 100 similar cases have been reported in the literature, so the case we present is rare and reviewing the literature and needs to be reported. PRESENTATION OF CASE: We report a case of a 55 year old Greek woman, gravida five and para three, who attended our unit 3 years ago complaining of occasionally lower abdominal pain and irritation the last months. Fourteen years ago she underwent abdominal hysterectomy and left salpingo-oophorectomy due to a 13 cm uterine leiomyoma. In the meantime she underwent two surgical procedures for recurrent benign leiomyomas. DISCUSSION: When patient was admitted at this time, clinical examination revealed a palpable mass of 5 cm. The transvaginal ultrasonography revealed 3 masses in the lower pelvis of unknown origin. The patient underwent a new laparotomy revealing three masses of benign leiomyomas with low mitotic activity. CONCLUSION: Our case supports the recurrent appearance of leiomyomas in pelvis after total abdominal hysterectomy and is one of few reports in literature where the tumors appear in the same patient both in estrogen rich and estrogen poor environment. Additionally, we show the importance of transvaginal ultrasonography and 3 dimensional power Doppler in the differential diagnosis of pelvic masses. Thus, transvaginal ultrasonography seems to be a pivotal tool for the diagnosis and follow up of these challenging lesions. (C) 2018 The Authors. Περίληψη: Η επανάσταση των μεγάλων δεδομένων τα τελευταία χρόνια διαρκώς θέτει προκλήσεις στην επιστήμη των δεδομένων. Ειδικότερα, οι πολλαπλές πηγές πληροφοριών σε συνδυασμό με τη διαρκή ανάπτυξη και γρήγορη μετάδοση των δεδομένων, έχουν δημιουργήσει την ανάγκη για ανάλυση των δεδομένων σε πραγματικό χρόνο. Προκειμένου να καλυφθεί αυτή η ανάγκη, ήρθε στο προσκήνιο η πολύπλοκη επεξεργασία δεδομένων. Η πολύπλοκη επεξεργασία δεδομένων είναι μία τεχνική που χρησιμοποιείται για την ανάλυση πολλαπλών ροών δεδομένων βασιζόμενη σε ανίχνευση μοτίβων. H αντίληψη πίσω από την πολύπλοκη επεξεργασία δεδομένων, είναι η εφαρμογή συσχετισμών μεταξύ γεγονότων πληροφοριών και η σύνδεση των γεγονότων για συγκεριμένα μοτίβα. Τα γεγονότα πληροφοριών ενδεχομένως να προέρχονται από πολλαπλές πηγές πληροφορίας, οπότε η πολύπλοκη επεξεργασία δεδομένων εξυπηρετεί την κατανεμημένη ανίχνευση γεγονότων. Στην παρούσα διπλωματική, έχει υλοποιηθεί ένα κατανεμημένο σύστημα πολύπλοκης επεξεργασίας δεδομένων βασιζόμενο στη μηχανή Esper. H συγκεκριμένη μηχανή είναι ένα λογισμικό ανοικτού κώδικα, κατάλληλο για πολύπλοκη επεξεργασία δεδομένων και ανάλυση σε πραγματικό χρόνο. Η μηχανή Esper έχει εγκατασταθεί πάνω στην υποδομή του Ferari που λειτουργεί ως ένα σύστημα κατανεμημένης επεξεργασίας ροών δεδομένων και το oποίο με τη σειρά του αξιοποιεί τις δυνατότητες διαφόρων συστημάτων, όπως το Apache Storm. Σκοπός αυτής της δουλειάς είναι η ενσωμάτωση της μηχανής Esper στο σύστημα Ferari και η διεξαγωγή πειραμάτων, αξιοποιώντας τις υπηρεσίες και τις δυνατότητες των μηχανισμών του Ferari. Τα πειράματα αυτά αναδεικνύουν τις δυνατότητες της μηχανής Esper και την αποδοτικότητα της ως μια μηχανή πολύπλοκης επεξεργασίας δεδομένων Summarization: The evolution of Big Data in the recent years has been posing continuous challenges to the Data Science field. More specifically, the multiple sources of information along with the continuous growth and fast transmission of data have raised the need for real-time data analysis. In order to fill this need complex event processing has emerged. Complex event processing is a technique used for analyzing multiple streams of data in a pattern-based manner. The concept behind complex event processing is the establishment of relationships between events of information and the correlation of the events for specific patterns. Events may derive from multiple streams so CEP fulfills the need for distributed event detection. In this thesis, a distributed complex event processing (CEP) system based on the Esper engine is implemented. Esper is an open-source software suitable for complex event processing and real time data analysis. The Esper engine lies on top of the Ferari project which serves as a framework for distributed streaming processing and utilizes the functionalities of various platforms such as the Apache Storm. The goal of this work is to integrate the Esper engine into the Ferari project and conduct experiments while taking advantage of Ferari's services and components. These experiments demonstrate Esper's capabilities and its efficiency as a CEP engine

Ο έλεγχος πολύπλοκων συστημάτων μεγάλης κλίμακας με τη χρήση ενός κεντρικού ελεγκτή προϋποθέτει υψηλές υπολογιστικές και επικοινωνιακές απαιτήσεις, γεγονός που καθιστά απαγορευτική την υλοποίηση τους στην πράξη. Ως εκ τούτου, η επιστημονική κοινότητα στρέφεται προς την ανάπτυξη μεθόδων κατανεμημένου ελέγχου, όπου το σύστημα μεγάλης κλίμακας διαιρείται σε μικρότερα διασυνδεδεμένα υποσυστήματα, και το κάθε υποσύστημα ελέγχεται ξεχωριστά από τοπικό ελεγκτή. Το χαρακτηριστικό γνώρισμα των διασυνδεδεμένων συστημάτων είναι πως η συμπεριφορά του κάθε υποσυστήματος εξαρτάται από τη δυναμική συμπεριφορά των άλλων υποσυστημάτων. Επιπλέον, η ευστάθεια, η επίδοση και η αξιοπιστία του συστήματος είναι άρρητα συνδεδεμένη με την ποσότητα της πληροφορίας που ανταλλάσσεται μεταξύ των υποσυστημάτων. Η παρούσα διατριβή επικεντρώνεται στην ανάπτυξη μεθόδων αξιόπιστου ελέγχου για διασυνδεδεμένα συστήματα. Θεωρούμε μη-γραμμικά υποσυστήματα με άγνωστες μη-γραμμικές αλληλεπιδράσεις μεταξύ των υποσυστημάτων, και επιπλέον θεωρούμε την περίπτωση κατά την οποία πολλαπλές βλάβες μπορούν να συμβούν σε κάθε υποσύστημα και διασύνδεση. Η ανάπτυξη της μεθόδου κατανεμημένου ελέγχου βασίζεται στη χρήση προσαρμοστικών μοντέλων προσέγγισης για την εκτίμηση των αγνώστων διασυνδέσεων και των αγνώστων αλλαγών στη δυναμική συμπεριφορά των υποσυστημάτων λόγω της εμφάνισης βλαβών. Σε πρώτο στάδιο αναπτύσσεται μέθοδος αποκεντρωμένου ελέγχου διασυνδεδεμένων υποσυστημάτων που εξασφαλίζει την ευστάθεια του συστήματος, χωρίς την ανάγκη ανταλλαγής πληροφοριών μεταξύ των υποσυστημάτων. Προς τη βελτίωση της ευρωστίας του συστήματος στην παρουσία σφαλμάτων προσέγγισης, αναπτύσσεται μέθοδος βασισμένη σε τροποποίηση νεκρής-ζώνης, σε συνδυασμό με προσαρμοστική μέθοδο για την εκτίμηση των άνω ορίων των αγνώστων σφαλμάτων προσέγγισης. Εκτός της περιοχής κάλυψης των μοντέλων προσέγγισης, η παρουσία μεγάλων σφαλμάτων προσέγγισης μπορεί να προκαλέσει προβλήματα αστάθειας στο σύστημα. Το πρόβλημα αυτό αντιμετωπίζεται με την ανάπτυξη αποκεντρωμένου συστημάτος ελέγχου ασφαλείας για την καθοδήγηση της τροχιάς του κάθε υποσυστήματος εντός της περιοχής κάλυψης. Σε επόμενο στάδιο, αναπτύσσεται μέθοδος για την κατανεμημένη ανίχνευση και αντιμετώπιση βλαβών, όπου η επικοινωνία μεταξύ των υποσυστημάτων βασίζεται στη χρήση του τοπικού σφάλματος παρακολούθησης. Το κατανεμημένο σύστημα ανίχνευσης βλαβών βασίζεται σε ένα σύνολο μη-γραμμικών εκτιμητών, ένα για κάθε υποσύστημα, και εξασφαλίζεται πως δεν συμβαίνουν άκυροι συναγερμοί ανίχνευσης βλάβης. Επιπλεόν, αποδεικνύεται πως με την προσέγγιση ενός άνω ορίου της συνάρτησης βλάβης, αντί της ίδιας της συνάρτησης βλάβης, εξασφαλίζεται η ευρωστία του συστήματος στην παρουσία σφαλμάτων προσέγγισης. Προς τη βελτιστοποίηση της ανταλλαγής πληροφοριών μεταξύ των υποσυστημάτων, αναπτύσσεται αλγόριθμος επικοινωνίας που βασίζεται στο συντονισμό μεταξύ των συστημάτων. O προτεινόμενος αλγόριθμος επικοινωνίας μειώνει σημαντικά το κόστος επικοινωνίας, με ελάχιστες επιπτώσεις στην απόδοση του συστήματος. Περαιτέρω, διαμορφώνεται το πρόβλημα βελτιστοποίησης της επικοινωνίας για διασυνδεδεμένα συστήματα με τη χρήση συναρτήσεων βήματος για τη προσέγγιση των αγνώστων διασυνδέσεων. Καθορίζεται η συνάρτηση βήματος που οδήγει στη βέλτιστη προσέγγιση άγνωστης συνάρτησης και με βάση αυτό το αποτέλεσμα, αναπτύσσεται ένας πιο αποδοτικός αλγόριθμος βασισμένος σε προσαρμοστικά μοντέλα προσέγγισης. Ο προτεινόμενος αλγόριθμος επικοινωνίας ελαχιστοποιεί την αβεβαιότητα για την επίδραση των διασυνδέσεων στη συμπεριφορά των υποσυστημάτων. Με τη χρήση προσομοιώσεων, παρουσιάζεται η αποτελεσματικότητα της προτεινόμενης μεθόδου για τον αξιόπιστο κατανεμημένο έλεγχο διασυνδεδεμένων συστημάτων, και των αλγορίθμων επικοινωνίας για τη βελτιστοποίηση της ανταλλαγής πληροφοριών μεταξύ των υποσυστημάτων. The control of complex and spatially distributed systems in a centralized architecture is computationally and communicationally intensive. Towards the development of viable solutions, research efforts are shifting towards a distributed control architecture, where the large-scale system is decomposed into smaller interconnected subsystems and controlled through a network of local decision-making modules. A key characteristic of interconnected systems is that the behavior of each subsystem is correlated not only with the local dynamics, but also with the dynamics of the other subsystems. In addition, the stability, reliability and performance properties of the overall system are often limited by the amount of information exchanged between the subsystems. A key objective is the development of energy-efficient distributed control and communication algorithms that guarantee the stability, performance and reliability of the system, in the presence of uncertain interconnections and faults. This thesis addresses the problem of distributed fault tolerant control for a class of interconnected systems. We consider feedback linearizable nonlinear subsystems, coupled by unknown nonlinear interconnections in which multiple faults may appear in any of the subsystems as well as in the interconnection effects. The distributed fault tolerant control scheme is based on the use of adaptive approximation models for estimating the unknown interconnection effects and changes in model dynamics due to failures. At first, we consider the case of no information exchange between the subsystems and develop a decentralized fault tolerant control scheme that guarantees uniform ultimate boundedness of the tracking errors to a small region around zero. The presence of residual approximation errors is addressed using a dead-zone modification in the adaptive laws combined with an adaptive bounding method. Outside the coverage region of the approximation models, the residual approximation error is typically significantly large, such that the states of the subsystems may become unbounded. This issue is addressed with the development of a decentralized safety control scheme for steering the trajectory back into the coverage region. Next, a distributed fault detection and accommodation scheme is presented, where the subsystems exchange information according to a self-triggering tracking-error based communication scheme. The distributed fault detection scheme is based on a set of distributed nonlinear estimators corresponding to each subsystem, and ensures that there are no false detection alarms. It is shown that by approximating the upper bound of the fault function, instead of the fault function itself, robustness to residual approximation errors is ensured. Towards optimizing the exchange of information between subsystems, a coordinated communication scheme is presented which substantially reduces the communication cost, with minimal impact on the system performance. Moreover, an optimized communication technique is developed based on the use of step functions for approximating the unknown interconnections and fault functions. Through rigorous mathematical analysis, the step function with the best approximation property is derived. Following this result, an efficient communication algorithm is presented which utilizes adaptive approximation models to minimize the uncertainty about the coupling dynamics. The effectiveness of the proposed distributed fault tolerant control and communication scheme is illustrated with simulations.

Ο έλεγχος πολύπλοκων συστημάτων μεγάλης κλίμακας με τη χρήση ενός κεντρικού ελεγκτή προϋποθέτει υψηλές υπολογιστικές και επικοινωνιακές απαιτήσεις, γεγονός που καθιστά απαγορευτική την υλοποίηση τους στην πράξη. Ως εκ τούτου, η επιστημονική κοινότητα στρέφεται προς την ανάπτυξη μεθόδων κατανεμημένου ελέγχου, όπου το σύστημα μεγάλης κλίμακας διαιρείται σε μικρότερα διασυνδεδεμένα υποσυστήματα, και το κάθε υποσύστημα ελέγχεται ξεχωριστά από τοπικό ελεγκτή. Η παρούσα διατριβή επικεντρώνεται στην ανάπτυξη μεθόδων αξιόπιστου ελέγχου για διασυνδεδεμένα συστήματα. Θεωρούμε μη-γραμμικά υποσυστήματα με άγνωστες μη-γραμμικές αλληλεπιδράσεις μεταξύ των υποσυστημάτων, και επιπλέον θεωρούμε την περίπτωση κατά την οποία πολλαπλές βλάβες μπορούν να συμβούν σε κάθε υποσύστημα και διασύνδεση. Η ανάπτυξη της μεθόδου κατανεμημένου ελέγχου βασίζεται στη χρήση προσαρμοστικών μοντέλων προσέγγισης για την εκτίμηση των αγνώστων διασυνδέσεων και των αγνώστων αλλαγών στη δυναμική συμπεριφορά των υποσυστημάτων λόγω της εμφάνισης βλαβών. Σε πρώτο στάδιο αναπτύσσεται μέθοδος αποκεντρωμένου ελέγχου διασυνδεδεμένων υποσυστημάτων που εξασφαλίζει την ευστάθεια του συστήματος, χωρίς την ανάγκη ανταλλαγής πληροφοριών μεταξύ των υποσυστημάτων. Προς τη βελτίωση της ευρωστίας του συστήματος στην παρουσία σφαλμάτων προσέγγισης, αναπτύσσεται μέθοδος βασισμένη σε τροποποίηση νεκρής-ζώνης, σε συνδυασμό με προσαρμοστική μέθοδο για την εκτίμηση των άνω ορίων των αγνώστων σφαλμάτων προσέγγισης. Εκτός της περιοχής κάλυψης των μοντέλων προσέγγισης, η παρουσία μεγάλων σφαλμάτων προσέγγισης μπορεί να προκαλέσει προβλήματα αστάθειας στο σύστημα. Το πρόβλημα αυτό αντιμετωπίζεται με την ανάπτυξη αποκεντρωμένου συστημάτος ελέγχου ασφαλείας για την καθοδήγηση της τροχιάς του κάθε υποσυστήματος εντός της περιοχής κάλυψης. Σε επόμενο στάδιο, αναπτύσσεται μέθοδος για την κατανεμημένη ανίχνευση και αντιμετώπιση βλαβών, όπου η επικοινωνία μεταξύ των υποσυστημάτων βασίζεται στη χρήση του τοπικού σφάλματος παρακολούθησης. Το κατανεμημένο σύστημα ανίχνευσης βλαβών βασίζεται σε ένα σύνολο μη-γραμμικών εκτιμητών, ένα για κάθε υποσύστημα, και εξασφαλίζεται πως δεν συμβαίνουν άκυροι συναγερμοί ανίχνευσης βλάβης. Επιπλεόν, αποδεικνύεται πως με την προσέγγιση ενός άνω ορίου της συνάρτησης βλάβης, αντί της ίδιας της συνάρτησης βλάβης, εξασφαλίζεται η ευρωστία του συστήματος στην παρουσία σφαλμάτων προσέγγισης. Στην παρούσα εργασία αναπτύχθηκε ένα θεωρητικό πλαίσιο, το οποίο αναλύει την ενεργειακή αποτελεσματικότητα, τους προσδιοριστικούς παράγοντες που ευθύνονται για το ενεργειακό παράδοξο και επικεντρώνεται ιδιαίτερα στον ρόλο της αβεβαιότητας και των προσδοκιών στην πραγματοποίηση επενδύσεων εξοικονόμησης ενέργειας. Επιπλέον αναπτύχθηκε ένα εμπειρικό μοντέλο που εκτιμήθηκε με τη μέθοδο OLS και το υπόδειγμα Tobit για να προσδιοριστούν οι παράγοντες που επιδρούν στις επενδύσεις εξοικονόμησης ενέργειας. Σα εμπειρικά αποτελέσματα αναδεικνύουν ότι οι επενδύσεις σε ΣΕΕ, στην περίπτωση της Ελληνικής Βιομηχανίας είναι στενά συνδεδεμένες με τον κλάδο που δραστηριοποιείται η επιχείρηση. Ο κλάδος δραστηριοποίησης επιδρά και στην επενδυτική συμπεριφορά της επιχείρησης καθορίζοντας τη στάση που κα ακολουθήσει. Ένα άλλο συμπέρασμα είναι ότι η ύπαρξη εναλλακτικού επενδυτικού σχεδίου είναι σημαντικό εμπόδιο στις επενδύσεις εξοικονόμησης ενέργειας. Από την άλλη πλευρά, η θετική στάση της επιχείρησης απέναντι στην σπουδαιότητα των επενδύσεων εξοικονόμησης ενέργειας επιδρά θετικά στην πραγματοποίηση τους. Ομοίως στην περίπτωση των ελληνικών βιομηχανιών, οι μεγάλες επιχειρήσεις και οι επιχειρήσεις που έχουν μεγάλο χρόνο ζωής προωθούν τις επενδύσεις εξοικονόμησης ενέργειας. Τέλος η αβεβαιότητα και οι προσδοκίες είναι κρίσιμοι παράγοντες για την απόφαση των επιχειρήσεων να επενδύσουν σε τεχνολογίες εξοικονόμησης ενέργειας. Για την εγχώρια βιομηχανία η προσδοκία για αύξηση του εργασιακού κόστους είναι αποτρεπτικός παράγοντας για τις επενδύσεις εξοικονόμησης ενέργειας, ενώ η αβεβαιότητα για τις επιπτώσεις στο περιβάλλον αποδεικνύεται ισχυρό κίνητρο για την πραγματοποίησή τους.
