We analyze the compatibility of the hypothesis of third-family quark-lepton unification at the TeV scale with electroweak precision data, lepton flavor universality tests, and high-$p_T$ constraints. We work within the framework of the UV complete flavor non-universal 4321 gauge model, which is matched at one loop to the Standard Model Effective Field Theory. For consistency, all electroweak precision observables are also computed at one loop within the effective field theory. At tree level, the most sizeable corrections are to $W\rightarrow \tau\nu_\tau$ and $Z \to \nu_\tau \nu_\tau$ due to integrating out a pseudo-Dirac singlet fermion required by the model for neutrino mass generation. At loop level, the new colored states of the model generate large flavor-universal contributions to the electroweak precision observables via leading- and next-to-leading log running effects, yielding a significant improvement in the electroweak fit (including an increase in the $W$-boson mass). These effects cannot be decoupled if the model addresses the charged-current $B$-meson anomalies. European wildlife has been subjected to intensifying levels of anthropogenic impact throughout the Holocene, yet the main genetic partitioning of many species is thought to still reflect the late-Pleistocene glacial refugia. We analyzed 26,342 nuclear SNPs of 464 wild boar (Sus scrofa) across the European continent to infer demographic history and reassess the genetic consequences of natural and anthropogenic forces. We found that population fragmentation, inbreeding and recent hybridization with domestic pigs have caused the spatial genetic structure to be heterogeneous at the local scale. Underlying local anthropogenic signatures, we found a deep genetic structure in the form of an arch-shaped cline extending from the Dinaric Alps, via Southeastern Europe and the Baltic states, to Western Europe and, finally, to the genetically diverged Iberian peninsula. These findings indicate that, despite considerable anthropogenic influence, the deeper, natural continental structure is still intact. Regarding the glacial refugia, our findings show a weaker signal than generally assumed, but are nevertheless suggestive of two main recolonization routes, with important roles for Southern France and the Balkans. Our results highlight the importance of applying genomic resources and framing genetic results within a species’ demographic history and geographic distribution for a better understanding of the complex mixture of underlying processes. We address again the old problem of calculating the radion effective potential in Randall-Sundrum scenarios, with the Goldberger-Wise stabilization mechanism. Various prescriptions have been used in the literature, most of them based on heuristic derivations and then applied in some approximations. We define rigorously a light radion 4D effective action by using the interpolating field method. For a given choice of the interpolating field, defined as a functional of 5D fields, the radion effective action is uniquely defined by the procedure of integrating out the other fields, with the constrained 5D equations of motion always satisfied with help of the Lagrange multipliers. Thus, for a given choice of the interpolating fields we obtain a precise prescription for calculating the effective potential. Different choices of the interpolating fields give different prescriptions but in most cases very similar effective potentials. We confirm the correctness of one prescription used so far on a more heuristic basis and also find several new, much more economical, ways of calculating the radion effective potential. Our general considerations are illustrated by several numerical examples. It is shown that in some cases the old methods, especially in models with strong back-reaction, give results which are off even by orders of magnitude. Fifteen exotic aquatic and semi aquatic Non-native Invasive Species (NIS) plus another thirteen exotic species (herbs and trees) were detected in a meandering stretch of 8.5 km and in an agricultural waterway and pools complex in Castejon (Ebro River floodplain, Navarra, NE Spain). The zebra mussel was the most ubiquitous NIS in all types of aquatic natural habitats and human infrastructures, followed by the Asian clam and red swamp crayfish in the river, both with established and abundant populations. The presence of false map terrapins is recorded for the first time in the Ebro River, and the presence of the benthic diatom throughout this stretch is confirmed, although no massive crusty filaments were found. The artificial riverside harbours with hybrid poplars could be a shelter for a small population of the beaver that was re-introduced by unapproved means in the 2000’s.

We examine the precise connection between the exact renormalisation group with local couplings and the renormalisation of correlation functions of composite operators in scale-invariant theories. A geometric description of theory space allows us to select convenient non-linear parametrisations that serve different purposes. First, we identify normal parameters in which the renormalisation group flows take their simplest form; normal correlators are defined by functional differentiation with respect to these parameters. The renormalised correlation functions are given by the continuum limit of correlators associated to a cutoff-dependent parametrisation, which can be related to the renormalisation group flows. The necessary linear and non-linear counterterms in any arbitrary parametrisation arise in a natural way from a change of coordinates. We show that, in a class of minimal subtraction schemes, the renormalised correlators are exactly equal to normal correlators evaluated at a finite cutoff. We study the effects of disorder on strongly coupled compressible matter in 2+1 dimensions. Our system consists of a D3/D5 intersection at finite temperature and in the presence of a disordered chemical potential. We first study the impact of disorder on the charge density and the quark condensate. Next, we focus on the DC conductivity and derive analytic expressions for the corrections induced by weak disorder. It is found that disorder enhances the DC conductivity at low charge density, while for large charge density the conductivity is reduced. We present numerical simulations both for weak and strong disorder. Finally, we show how disorder gives rise to a sublinear behavior for the conductivity as a function of the charge density, a behavior qualitatively similar to predictions and observations for electric transport in graphene., Comment: 40 pages, 16 figures. From the Wilsonian point of view, renormalisable theories are understood as submanifolds in theory space emanating from a particular fixed point under renormalisation group evolution. We show how this picture precisely applies to their gravity duals. We investigate the Hamilton-Jacobi equation satisfied by the Wilson action and find the corresponding fixed points and their eigendeformations, which have a diagonal evolution close to the fixed points. The relevant eigendeformations are used to construct renormalised theories. We explore the relation of this formalism with holographic renormalisation. We also discuss different renormalisation schemes and show that the solutions to the gravity equations of motion can be used as renormalised couplings that parametrise the renormalised theories. This provides a transparent connection between holographic renormalisation group flows in the Wilsonian and non-Wilsonian approaches. During four years of project work (2006-2009), on the distribution and conservation of terrapins in the Castilla and Leon region (Spain), the majority of the rivers in this region were sampled. Datasets were obtained by compiling information after 2002, including citations by individuals and by field sampling, performed using visual linear transects (500-1000 m) and by livecapture using creels. The results reflect a significant increase in the number of records of non-native terrapins present. From more than 2000 points sampled a total of 67 positive results were obtained, distributed through nine provinces, in comparison with the six records and three provinces located in previous studies. These results allow us a more objective view of this problem and to determine with greater exactitude an action plan to manage it.

Several popular extensions of the Standard Model predict extra vector fields that transform as triplets under the gauge group SU(2)_L. These multiplets contain Z' and W' bosons, with masses and couplings related by gauge invariance. We review some model-independent results about these new vector bosons, with emphasis on di-lepton and lepton-plus-missing-energy signals at the LHC., LaTex 5 pages. Talk by M. We study in a model-independent way new neutral and charged vector bosons that could give observable signals with leptonic final states at the LHC. We show, in particular, that a charged vector W' decaying into lepton plus neutrino is accompanied by at least an extra neutral vector boson Z', nearly degenerate with the charged one. Conversely, a Z' boson with significant isospin violation cannot exist without a companion W'. To take advantage of these generic correlations, we perform a combined analysis of LHC data in the dilepton and lepton-plus-missing-energy channels, which allows us to improve the limits from independent analyses. We also develop some tools to easily deal with cases in which several heavy vector bosons with similar masses interfere. This paper is devoted to the study of some global dynamical properties of the so-called sunflower equation ϵx′′(t) + ax′(t) + b sin x(t − ϵ) = 0, ϵ > 0. It is shown that considering this equation as retarded differential equation on S1 ± R , it has a global attractor for any ϵ > 0, which is homeomorphic to S1 for any ϵ ∈ [0, a/b].

Se analizó la distribución espacial de los principales peces continentales de España y su relación con variables tales como: altitud, orden de los ríos, pendiente, precipitaciones, temperaturas medias mínima y máxima, de invierno y verano respectivamente. Se consideraron las cuencas hidrográficas del Norte, Duero, Tajo, Ebro, Guadiana, Guadalquivir, Júcar, Segura, Sur e Internas de Cataluña. Las variables se analizaron bajo un enfoque espacial, utilizando un Sistema de Información Geográfica (SIG). Las asociaciones de las variables antes mencionadas, tanto cuantitativas como cualitativas, se determinaron aplicando un Análisis de Correspondencias Múltiples. Spatial distribution of the mainly continental fishes of Spain and its relation by such variables as: altitude, rivers orders, slope, rainfalls, average minimal and maximum temperatures, on winter and summer respectively, was analyzed. The hydrographical basins of the: North, Duero, Tajo, Ebro, Guadiana, Guadalquivir, Júcar, Segura, South and Internal Catalonia were considered. The variables were analyzed under a spatial approach, using a Geographical Information System (GIS). The relationships of the variables mentioned before, both quantitative and qualitative, were determined applying a Multiple Correspondences Analysis.

Using gauge/gravity duality, we investigate charge localization near an interface in a strongly coupled system. For this purpose we consider a top-down holographic model and determine its conductivities. Our model corresponds to a holographic interface which localizes charge around a (1+1)-dimensional defect in a (2+1)-dimensional system. The setup consists of a D3/D5 intersection at finite temperature and charge density. We work in the probe limit, and consider massive embeddings of a D5-brane where the mass depends on one of the field theory spatial directions, with a profile interpolating between a negative and a positive value. We compute the conductivity in the direction parallel and perpendicular to the interface. For the latter case we are able to express the DC conductivity as a function of background horizon data. At the interface, the DC conductivity in the parallel direction is enhanced up to five times with respect to that in the orthogonal one.
