The photochemically induced ring-opening isomerization reaction of 1,3-cyclohexadiene (CHD) to 1,3,5-hexatriene (HT) is a textbook example of a pericyclic reaction, and has been amply investigated with advanced spectroscopic techniques. The generally accepted description of the isomerization pathway starts with a valence excitation to the lowest-lying bright state, followed by a passage through a conical intersection to a dark doubly excited state, and finally a branching between either the return to the ground state of the cyclic molecule or the actual ring-opening reaction leading to the open-chain isomer. It was traditionally assumed that the dark reactive state corresponds to the second excited state of CHD at the Franck-Condon geometry. Here in a joint experimental and computational effort we demonstrate that the evolution of the excitation-deexcitation process is much more complex than usually described. In particular, we show that an initially high-lying electronic state smoothly decreasing in energy along the reaction path plays a key role in the ring-opening reaction. The conceptual basis of our work is that the dynamics to consider here is determined by diabatic states, whose populations are the ones closely related to the observed photoelectron signal., Sumbitted to Nature Communications (under review)

Lithium fluoride (LiF) films and crystals are versatile X-ray imaging detectors based on the optical reading of visible photoluminescence from radiation-induced electronic defects. Distinctive features of these detectors are their high spatial resolution across a large field of view, wide dynamic range and insensitivity to ambient light. These peculiarities of LiF detectors appear to be promising for monitoring the spatial intensity distribution of ultra-short, ultra-high pulses of the EUV-X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL) and could be exploited for coherent diffraction imaging experiments.

FERMI is a seeded free-electron laser (FEL) facility located at the Elettra laboratory in Trieste, Italy, and is now in user operation with its first FEL line, FEL-1, covering the wavelength range between 100 and 20 nm. The second FEL line, FEL-2, a high-gain harmonic generation double-stage cascade covering the wavelength range 20–4 nm, has also completed commissioning and the first user call has been recently opened. An overview of the typical operating modes of the facility is presented.

- Abstract
Two color experiments are now available to users at the low-density matter beamline (LDM) operating at the Free Electron Laser (FEL) source FERMI@Elettra [1]. The seeded FEL method used at FERMI allows generation of high power, coherent pulses in the femtosecond regime, with a high level of shot-to-shot stability. Variable polarization is also available. LDM is dedicated to atomic, molecular and cluster physics. The LDM endstation,equipped with a velocity map imaging and a time-of-flight detector [2], is an ideal tool to characterize fast multiphoton processes. LDM was open to users in December 2012 and in February 2013 performed its firstpump and probe experiment on photoionization of atomic He and generation of spectral sidebands. The FERMI FEL-1 source, delivered EUV photons with several tens of microjoule per pulse (about 100 fs wide) in atunable wavelength range from 65 to 20 nm, while the 780 nm, optical pulses were from the same Ti:sapphire laser used to form the FEL seed pulse. This paper gives details about the pump and probe experimental setupand shows the straightforward use of the pump and probe data to measure the FEL pulse width.

22 pages; International audience; The optical properties of Sc/Si periodic multilayers are analyzed at three wavelengths in the x-ray range: 0.154, 0.712 and 12.7 nm. Fitting the reflectivity curves obtained at these three wavelengths enable us to constrain the parameters, thickness, density and roughness of the various layers, of the studied multilayers. Scattering curves were also measured at 12.7 nm on some samples to obtain an estimate of the correlation length of the roughness. Two sets of multilayers are used, with and without B4C diffusion barrier at the interfaces. To see the efficiency of the B4C layers the measures are performed after annealing up to 400°C. A dramatic change of the structure of the Sc/Si multilayer is observed between 100 and 200°C leading to a strong loss of reflectivity. For the Sc/B4C/Si/B4C multilayer the structure is stable up to 200°C after which a progressive evolution of the stack occurs.

NO molecules adsorbed on a Pt(111) surface from dipping in an acidic nitrite solution are studied by near edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (NEXAFS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), low energy electron diffraction (LEED) and scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) techniques. LEED patterns and STM images show that no long range ordered structures are formed after NO adsorption on a Pt(111) surface. Although the total NO coverage is very low, spectroscopic features in N K-edge and O K-edge absorption spectra have been singled out and related to the different species induced by this preparation method. From these measurements it is concluded that the NO molecule is adsorbed trough the N atom in an upright conformation. The maximum saturation coverage is about 0.3 monolayers, and although nitric oxide is the major component, nitrite and nitrogen species are slightly co-adsorbed on the surface. The results obtained from this study are compared with those previously reported in the literature for NO adsorbed on Pt(111) under UHV conditions.

The conical diffraction mounting in which the direction of incident light belongs to a plane parallel to the direction of the grooves has the unique property of maintaining high diffraction efficiency, even in the extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) region. This property is useful for designing high-throughput time-delay-compensated monochromators for the spectral selection of ultrashort EUV pulses as the high-order harmonics generated by the interaction between an ultrashort laser pulse and a gas jet. The time compensation allows one to exploit the femtosecond scale duration of the harmonics both to have high intensity and to reach an unprecedented temporal resolution for pump and probe experiments. Because two gratings have to be used for time compensation, the high diffraction efficiency becomes an essential requirement, which can be fulfilled by the conical diffraction mounting. Measurements recently accomplished at the Bending Magnet for Emission Absorption and Reflectivity (BEAR) beam line (ELETTRA Synchrotron, Trieste, Italy) for three gratings in the 10-90 nm region are reported here that show a peak efficiency of as much as 0.7 in the first order. A model computing the electromagnetic propagation and the grating efficiency, implemented and tested with the experimental data, permits the study and design of rather complex systems operating in the conical mounting. Basic physical principles and mathematical aspects of the model are discussed here.

FEL - Abstract
FERMI, the seeded Free Electron Laser (FEL) located at the Elettra laboratory in Trieste, Italy, welcomed in December 2012 the first external users on the FEL-1 line. This line is based on a single stage of High Gain Harmonic Generation (HGHG), seeded by a UV laser, and covers wavelengths between 80 and 20 nm. The photon energy reached more than 300 J. The second FEL line, FEL-2, covering the lower wavelength range between 20 and 4 nm thanks to a double stage cascaded HGHG scheme, has generated its first coherent photons in October 2012. The latter is the first experimental demonstration of a seeded free electron laser configured as a two-stage cascade operating in the "fresh bunch injection” mode, where the second stage is seeded by the light produced by the first stage. This paper describes the status of the operation and user experiments with FEL-1 and reports about the progress in the commissioning of FEL-2.

After the commissioning phase, it received the first external users at the end of 2012. The design and characterization of the LDM photon transport system is described, detailing the optical components of the beamline.

We present here a method for the quantitative prediction of the spectroscopic specular reflectivity line-shape in anisotropic layered media. The method is based on a 4 ×, 4 matrix formalism and on the simulation from the first principles (through density functional theory&mdash, DFT) of the anisotropic absorption cross-section. The approach was used to simulate the reflectivity at the oxygen K-edge of a 3,4,9,10-perylene-tetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCDA) thin film on Au(111). The effect of film thickness, orientation of the molecules, and grazing incidence angle were considered. The simulation results were compared to the experiment, permitting us to derive information on the film geometry, thickness, and morphology, as well as the electronic structure.

X-ray free-electron lasers (FELs), which amplify light emitted by a relativistic electron beam, are extending nonlinear optical techniques to shorter wavelengths, adding element specificity by exciting and probing electronic transitions from core levels. These techniques would benefit tremendously from having a stable FEL source, generating spectrally pure and wavelength-tunable pulses. We show that such requirements can be met by operating the FEL in the so-called echo-enabled harmonic generation (EEHG) configuration. Here, two external conventional lasers are used to precisely tailor the longitudinal phase space of the electron beam before emission of X-rays. We demonstrate high-gain EEHG lasing producing stable, intense, nearly fully coherent pulses at wavelengths as short as 5.9 nm (~211 eV) at the FERMI FEL user facility. Low sensitivity to electron-beam imperfections and observation of stable, narrow-band, coherent emission down to 2.6 nm (~474 eV) make the technique a prime candidate for generating laser-like pulses in the X-ray spectral region, opening the door to multidimensional coherent spectroscopies at short wavelengths. Echo-enabled harmonic generation in a free-electron laser enables 45th harmonic pulses from a 264 nm wavelength seed, yielding 5.9 nm wavelength coherent output.

Several well established spectroscopies for experiments in the energy domain have been successfully adapted to the time domain with sub-picosecond time resolution. Here we show the realization of high resolution resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) with a stable ultrashort X-ray source such as an externally seeded free electron laser (FEL). We have designed and constructed a RIXS experimental endstation that allowed us to successfully measure the d-d excitations in KCoF3 single crystals at the cobalt M$_{2,3}$-edge at FERMI FEL (Elettra-Sincrotrone Trieste, Italy). The FEL-RIXS spectra show an excellent agreement with the ones obtained from the same samples at the MERIXS endstation of the MERLIN beamline at the Advanced Light Source storage ring (Berkeley, USA). We established experimental protocols for performing time resolved RIXS experiments at a FEL source to avoid X ray-induced sample damage, while retaining comparable acquisition time to the synchrotron based measurements. Finally, we measured and modelled the influence of the FEL mixed electromagnetic modes, also present in externally seeded FELs, and the beam transport with ~120 meV experimental resolution achieved in the presented RIXS setup., Published by Nature Publishing Group, London

The evolution of the electronic properties of a thin film of copper phthalocyanine deposited on Al(100) and progressively intercalated with rubidium atoms was followed by photoemission and X-ray absorption spectroscopies. Electron donation from the Rb atoms to the C32H16N8Cu molecules results in the lifting of the degeneracy in the e(g) ligand-derived molecular orbital and the lowering of the molecular symmetry. For Rb similar to 2C32H16N8Cu, spectral evidence indicates that both donated electrons reside in the first split-off e(g)-derived level, thus creating an electronic inequivalence between the C atoms in the benzene rings. For higher Rb concentrations, a reduction of the Cu oxidation state is observed, together with a new Cu-derived state in valence-band photoemission spectra, testifying to the filling of the b(1g) orbital. Thus, even though b(1g) is the lowest unoccupied orbital of the neutral molecule, in the film, the Cu-derived b(1g)-derived states are occupied only after a partial filling of the e.-derived band has taken place. Despite the fact that the eg-derived spectral weight becomes larger as the rubidium content in the RbxC32H16N8Cu compound increases, no spectral density was observed at the Fermi level, showing that the film remains insulating for all of the investigated stoichiometries.

Ultrafast extreme ultraviolet and X-ray free-electron lasers are set to revolutionize many domains such as bio-photonics and materials science, in a manner similar to optical lasers over the past two decades. Although their number will grow steadily over the coming decade, their complete characterization remains an elusive goal. This represents a significant barrier to their wider adoption and hence to the full realization of their potential in modern photon sciences. Although a great deal of progress has been made on temporal characterization and wavefront measurements at ultrahigh extreme ultraviolet and X-ray intensities, only few, if any progress on accurately measuring other key parameters such as the state of polarization has emerged. Here we show that by combining ultra-short extreme ultraviolet free electron laser pulses from FERMI with near-infrared laser pulses, we can accurately measure the polarization state of a free electron laser beam in an elegant, non-invasive and straightforward manner using circular dichroism. © 2014 Macmillan Publishers Limited.

Exploring the dynamics of matter driven to extreme non-equilibrium states by an intense ultrashort X-ray pulse is becoming reality, thanks to the advent of free-electron laser technology that allows development of different schemes for probing the response at variable time delay with a second pulse. Here we report the generation of two-colour extreme ultraviolet pulses of controlled wavelengths, intensity and timing by seeding of high-gain harmonic generation free-electron laser with multiple independent laser pulses. The potential of this new scheme is demonstrated by the time evolution of a titanium-grating diffraction pattern, tuning the two coherent pulses to the titanium M-resonance and varying their intensities. This reveals that an intense pulse induces abrupt pattern changes on a time scale shorter than hydrodynamic expansion and ablation. This result exemplifies the essential capabilities of the jitter-free multiple-colour free-electron laser pulse sequences to study evolving states of matter with element sensitivity., Free-electron lasers are a powerful new tool for studying properties and transient states of matter. FERMI@Elettra is a free electron-laser (FEL)-based user facility that, after two years of commissioning, started preliminary users' dedicated runs in 2011. At variance with other FEL user facilities, FERMI@Elettra has been designed to deliver improved spectral stability and longitudinal coherence. The adopted scheme, which uses an external laser to initiate the FEL process, has been demonstrated to be capable of generating FEL pulses close to the Fourier transform limit. We report on the first instance of FEL wavelength tuning, both in a narrow and in a large spectral range (fine- and coarse-tuning). We also report on two different experiments that have been performed exploiting such FEL tuning. We used fine-tuning to scan across the 1s–4p resonance in He atoms, at ≈23.74 eV (52.2 nm), detecting both UV–visible fluorescence (4p–2s, 400 nm) and EUV fluorescence (4p–1s, 52.2 nm). We used coarse-tuning to scan the M4,5 absorption edge of Ge (∼29.5 eV) in the wavelength region 30–60 nm, measured in transmission geometry with a thermopile positioned on the rear side of a Ge thin foil.

International audience; The performance of multilayer optics depends on the quality of the buried interfaces between materials, whose intermixing strongly affects their behavior. We present an experimental method to determine, in a non destructively way, the amount of material intermixing at interfaces of multilayer structures. The reflection mechanism is related to the build up in the multilayer of a standing wave field, whose peaks and the valleys move as a function both of wavelength and of incidence angle. Exploiting this fact it is possible to modulate the electric field inside the multilayer in order to have different parts of the multilayer structure excited at a different extent and in particular the buried interfaces regions. The excitation is directly proportional to the intensity of the electric field and to the concentration of a given element in the sample. The excitation can be detected with different techniques, f.i. electron core level photoemission, fluorescence, luminescence, total electron yield. The flexibility of the experimental apparatus of the BEAR beamline (Elettra Trieste, Italy) allowed us to study some important classes of layered structures in the soft X-ray energy range, using the above mentioned techniques together with the determination of the Bragg conditions through the measurement of the specular reflectivity. We demonstrate the possibility of obtaining quantitative information on the width of the intermixing region, strongly related to the interface roughness, through the comparison with a phenomenological model of the intermixing and a numerical simulation of the standing field inside the multilayer.

We have developed and elaborated a series of Mg/Co-based periodic multilayers to build efficient mirrors for the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) range. For s-polarized light and at 45° of grazing incidence, the reflectivity of as-deposited Mg/Co is 42.6% at 25.1 nm. X-ray emission spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance measurements do not indicate any noticeable interdiffusion at the interfaces between layers. Scanning transmission electronic microscopy images attest the high structural quality of the stack. X-ray reflectivity (XRR) curves in the hard x-ray and EUV domains confirm this description and estimate a weak interfacial roughness (~ 0.5 nm). Taking advantage of the magnetic character of Co, we have performed resonant magnetic reflectivity measurements by scanning the photon energy around the Co L absorption edge for opposite circular polarizations. The magnetization profile of the Co layers within Co/Mg determined with an expected depth resolution of one monolayer confirms the interface abruptness. Scanning electron microscopy images and XRR curves give evidence of the thermal stability of Mg/Co up to 300 °C. From that value, a strong change in the sample morphology due to the delamination of the multilayer from the substrate occurs. This should account for the drastic reflectivity drop observed above this temperature. Starting from Mg/Co, we have inserted a Zr layer at one or at the other interface or at both interfaces to estimate the effect of the introduction of a third material within the period. We have found that Mg/Co/Zr is more efficient (50% of reflectivity) than Mg/Zr/Co and Mg/Zr/Co/Zr (~ 40%). Through time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry depth profiling and NMR measurements, we have assigned this difference to an intermixing process when Co layers are deposited onto Zr layers.

The performance of manganite-based magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) has suffered from reduced magnetization present at the junction interfaces that is ultimately responsible for the spin polarization of injected currents; this behavior has been attributed to a magnetic "dead layer" that typically extends a few unit cells into the manganite. X-ray magnetic scattering in resonant conditions (XRMS) is one of the most innovative and effective techniques to extract surface or interfacial magnetization profiles with subnanometer resolution, and has only recently been applied to oxide heterostructures. Here we present our approach to characterizing the surface and interfacial magnetization of such heterostructures using the XRMS technique, conducted at the BEAR beamline (Elettra synchrotron, Trieste). Measurements were carried out in specular reflectivity geometry, switching the left/right elliptical polarization of light as well the magnetization direction in the scattering plane. Spectra were collected across the Mn L2,3 edge for at least four different grazing angles in order to better analyse the interference phenomena. The resulting reflectivity spectra have been carefully fit to obtain the magnetization profiles, minimizing the number of free parameters as much as possible. Optical constants of the samples (real and imaginary part of the refractive index) in the interested frequency range are obtained through absorption measurements in two magnetization states and subsequent Kramers-Kronig transformation, allowing quantitative fits of the magnetization profile at different temperatures. We apply this method to the study of air-exposed surfaces of epitaxial La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 (001) films grown on SrTiO3 (001) substrates., 11 pages + 3 figures; accepted to JMMM (2009)

The resonant magnetic reflectivity of Co/Mg multilayers around the Co L2,3 absorption edge is simulated then measured on a specifically designed sample. The dichroic signal is obtained when making the difference between the two reflectivities measured with the magnetic field applied in two opposite directions parallel to the sample surface. The simulations show that the existence of magnetic dead layers at the interfaces between the Co and Mg layers leads to an important increase of the dichroic signal measured in the vicinity of the third Bragg peak that otherwise should be negligible. The measurements are in agreement with the model introducing 0.25 nm thick dead layers. This is attributed to the Co atoms in contact with the Mg layers and thus we conclude that the Co-Mg interfaces are abrupt from the magnetic point of view., 8 pages
