We have pre-registered three primary studies investigating therapist characteristics as predictors of treatment outcome.

Studies investigating associations between therapist training and professional characteristics with treatment outcomes have yielded mixed findings. This study will examine characteristics that have been previously or are theoretically linked to treatment outcome.

The Facilitative Interpersonal Skills (FIS) task has been found to predict therapists’ outcomes. This study will examine the FIS and measures drawn from the nomological network of FIS items as predictors of therapists’ outcomes.

A growing body of evidence highlights the importance of therapists’ multicultural orientation in supporting patient outcomes, particularly for individuals from minoritized groups. This study will examine a multicultural performance task – the Multicultural Orientation Task (Owen et al.) – and other measures theoretically related to therapists’ multicultural orientation as predictors of therapists’ outcomes.

Attachment security is one therapist characteristic that has been previously linked with patient outcomes. The precise mechanism that may underlie this relationship is unclear. This study will examine therapist interpersonal skill as assessed via the Facilitative Interpersonal Skills task as a mediator of the link between therapist attachment security as assessed via the Experiences in Close Relationships – Short Form and patient outcomes.
