Due to the complexity of 2D magnetic anomaly maps north of 18°S and the sparsity of seismic data, the tectonic evolution of the northern Lau Basin has not yet been unraveled. We use a multi‐method approach to reconstruct the formation of the basin at ∼16°S by compiling seismic, magnetic, gravimetric and geochemical data along a 185 km‐long crustal transect. We identified a crustal zonation which preserves the level of subduction input at the time of the crust's formation. Paired with the seafloor magnetization, the crustal zonation enabled us to qualitatively approximate the dynamic spreading history of the region. Further assessment of the recent tectonic activity and the degree of tectonic overprinting visible in the crust both suggest a complex tectonic history including a dynamically moving spreading center and the reorganizing of the local magma supply. Comparing the compiled data sets has revealed substantial differences in the opening mechanisms of the two arms of the Overlapping Spreading Center (OSC) that is made up by the northernmost tip of the Fonualei Rift and Spreading Center in the east and the southernmost segment of the Mangatolu Triple Junction in the west. The observed transition from a predominantly tectonic opening mechanism at the eastern OSC arm to a magmatic opening mechanism at the western OSC arm coincides with an equally sharp transition from and strongly subduction influenced crust to a crust with virtually no subduction input. The degree of subduction input alters the geochemical composition, as well as the lithospheric stress response., Plain Language Summary: The opening of back‐arc basins is often described as analogy to mid‐ocean ridge spreading, where the only difference is the force driving the extension. However, the northern Lau Basin is a prime example for the shortcomings of this analogy since its crust preserves an image of its complex tectonic history. The complexity results from the short‐lived nature of zones of active rifting and spreading in the northern Lau Basin, which is very different from the temporally and spatially steady nature of spreading centers at mid‐ocean ridges. The analysis of different methods (wide angle seismic data using ocean bottom seismometers, multi‐channel seismic, magnetic, gravity, and geochemical data) has led us to conclude that the Lau Basin's crust at 15°30–17°20′S was formed by a dynamically changing, both in regard of magma composition and position, extensional system that consists of the Fonualei Rift and Spreading Center and the Mangatolu Triple Junction. Nevertheless, the crustal zonation, formed by the varying subduction influence during its formation, is still preserved and affects the stress response of the crust and thus the present‐day tectonic behavior., Key Points: Oceanic crust in the north‐eastern Lau Basin formed at the now reorganized FRSC‐MTJ system. The data publication contains the compilation of global heat-flow data by the International Heat Flow Commission (IHFC; www.ihfc-iugg.org) of the International Association of Seismology and Physics of the Earth's Interior (IASPEI). The presented data update 2023 contains data generated between 1939 and 2022 and constitutes the first intermediate update benefiting from the global collaborative assessment and quality control of the Global Heat Flow Database running since May 2021 (http://assessment.ihfc-iugg.org).

The northeastern Lau Basin is one of the fastest opening and magmatically most active back‐arc regions on Earth. Although the current pattern of plate boundaries and motions in this complex mosaic of microplates is reasonably understood, the internal structure and evolution of the back‐arc crust are not. We present new geophysical data from a 290 km long east‐west oriented transect crossing the Niuafo'ou Microplate (back‐arc), the Fonualei Rift and Spreading Center (FRSC) and the Tofua Volcanic Arc at 17°20′S. Our P wave tomography model and density modeling suggest that past crustal accretion inside the southern FRSC was accommodated by a combination of arc crustal extension and magmatic activity. The absence of magnetic reversals inside the FRSC supports this and suggests that focused seafloor spreading has until now not contributed to crustal accretion. The back‐arc crust constituting the southern Niuafo'ou Microplate reveals a heterogeneous structure comprising several crustal blocks. Some regions of the back‐arc show a crustal structure similar to typical oceanic crust, suggesting they originate from seafloor spreading. Other crustal blocks resemble a structure that is similar to volcanic arc crust or a “hydrous” type of oceanic crust that has been created at a spreading center influenced by slab‐derived water at distances, Key Points: First insights into the crustal structure of the northeastern Lau Basin, along a 290 km transect at 17°20′S. Despite the significance of the figure of ‘the Jew’ as Other in the Western imagination and the persistence of prejudice against Jews, there have been few studies of contemporary Jews as subjects of prejudice in liberal secular law and legal discourse. This article draws attention to continuing Jewish vulnerability and argues that a focus on colonial encounters and phenotype in understanding processes of legal exclusion based on religion and race cannot fully account for the persistence of anti-Jewish prejudice and its resonance in law and legal discourse. Through an analysis of contemporary case law from three different countries, I show how narratives of Christian superiority, veiled behind commitments to secular neutrality, and racializing discourse resonate in legal encounters with Jewishness. I highlight parallels with other minority groups, in particular Muslims, and consider the usefulness of antisemitism as an analytical lens to capture the ambivalent dynamics of Jewish inclusion and exclusion.

Phase-contrast imaging is one of the standard X-ray imaging methods at synchrotron beamlines and has already proven to be beneficial for soft-tissue visualization. However, most implementations use single-distance inline phase-contrast techniques, and are thus not able to provide quantitative information. To access these, grating-based imaging (GBI) setups or, rather recently, speckle-based imaging (SBI) methods can be used. We built a new grating-based setup at the beamline P05 operated by HZG at the storage ring PETRA III / DESY. This new setup overcomes the previously reported limitations in spatial resolution compared to inline phase-contrast imaging. Furthermore, it allows for accurate quantitative phase contrast micro computed tomography of biological soft tissue. We replaced the typically used sandpaper by a 2D phase-grating as a wavefront marker, which increased the visibility and allowed for using fewer phase steps. Combined with an existing SBI phase-retrieval algorithm, the so-called Unified Modulated Pattern Analysis (UMPA) and an optimized scan protocol, we reached a resolution below 4 microns in scan times less than two hours. We investigated stained and unstained tissue samples, to quantify the staining process of different tissue types and were able to observe an increase in electron density, dependent on the stain and tissue type. By this, we could show the successful operation of our setup to quantitatively investigate samples on a micro meter scale at the beamline P05.

Widespread gas venting along the Cascadia margin is investigated from acoustic water column data and reveals a nonuniform regional distribution of over 1100 mapped acoustic flares. The highest number of flares occurs on the shelf, and the highest flare density is seen around the nutrition-rich outflow of the Juan de Fuca Strait. We determine ∼430 flow-rates at ∼340 individual flare locations along the margin with instantaneous in situ values ranging from ∼6 mL min−1 to ∼18 L min−1. Applying a tidal-modulation model, a depth-dependent methane density, and extrapolating these results across the margin using two normalization techniques yields a combined average in situ flow-rate of ∼88 × 106 kg y−1. The average methane flux-rate for the Cascadia margin is thus estimated to ∼0.9 g y−1m−2. Combined uncertainties result in a range of these values between 4.5 and 1800% of the estimated mean values., Methane venting is a widespread phenomenon at the Cascadia margin, however a comprehensive database of methane vents at this margin is lacking. Here the authors show that the margin-wide average methane flow-rate ranges from ~4 × 106 to ~1590 × 106 kg y−1 and is on average around 88 ± 6 × 106 kg y−1.

The Svalbard margin represents one of the northernmost gas hydrate provinces worldwide. Vestnesa Ridge (VR) and Svyatogor Ridge (SR) west of Svalbard are two prominent sediment drifts showing abundant pockmarks and sites of seismic chimney structures. Some of these sites at VR are associated with active gas venting and were the focus of drilling and coring with the seafloor‐deployed MARUM‐MeBo70 rig. Understanding the nature of fluid migration and gas hydrate distribution requires (among other parameters) knowledge of the thermal regime and in situ gas and pore fluid composition. In situ temperature data were obtained downhole at a reference site at VR defining a geothermal gradient of ~78 mK m−1 (heat flow ~95 mW m−2). Additional heat probe data were obtained to describe the thermal regime of the pockmarks. The highest heat flow values were systematically seen within pockmark depressions and were uncorrelated to gas venting occurrences. Heat flow within pockmarks is typically ~20 mW m−2 higher than outside pockmarks. Using the downhole temperature data and gas compositions from drilling we model the regional base of the gas hydrate stability zone (BGHSZ). Thermal modeling including topographic effects suggest a BGHSZ up to 40 m deeper than estimated from seismic data. Uncertainties in sediment properties (velocity and thermal conductivity) are only partially explaining the mismatch. Capillary effects due to small sediment grain sizes may shift the free gas occurrence above the equilibrium BGHSZ. The electrochemical behavior of two different types of planar 10-layer solid oxide cell (SOC) stacks with having either fuel electrode supported cells or electrolyte supported cells, are examined under steam, co- and CO2 electrolysis at elevated pressures of up to 8 bar. Experiments with steady-state and dynamically recorded U(i)-characteristics are performed in order to evaluate the performances over a wide temperature range and for different operating conditions. Furthermore, the influence of the operating pressure is quantified via the temperature and pressure dependency of the related ASR values of each stack. Impedance analysis is conducted in order to investigate the major differences and the pressure effect on the specific process resistances during steam and CO2 electrolysis.In case of the stack with fuel electrode supported cells, the ASR is found to decrease significantly at elevated pressure leading to an overall performance gain, whereas the stack with electrolyte supported cells shows a minor pressure effect. An impedance study shows that the diffusion and activation resistances are significantly affected when conducting CO2 instead of H2O electrolysis for both stack concepts. Furthermore, the pressure sensitivity is found to be more dominant during CO2 electrolysis than during pure steam electrolysis operation.

The religious tradition of male circumcision has come increasingly under attack across a number of European states. While critics of the practice argue that the problem is about children’s rights and the proper relationship between secular and religious traditions, Jews tend to see these attacks within the longer history of attempts to assimilate and remake them according to the norms of the majority. Using the 2012 German legal controversy concerning the issue as my vantage point, I explore how contemporary criticism of male circumcision remains entangled with ambivalence toward Judaism and the Jews as the “other.” Through a close reading of the arguments, I show how opponents use the seemingly neutral language of universal human rights to (re)make Jewish difference according to the norms of the majority. I conclude by arguing that such an approach to this issue runs the risk of turning Jews once again into strangers at a time when cultural anxieties are troubling European societies.

Oncogenic fusion events have been identified in a broad range of tumors. Among them, RET rearrangements represent distinct and potentially druggable targets that are recurrently found in lung adenocarcinomas. Here, we provide further evidence that current anti-RET drugs may not be potent enough to induce durable responses in such tumors. We report that potent inhibitors such as AD80 or ponatinib that stably bind in the DFG-out conformation of RET may overcome these limitations and selectively kill RET-rearranged tumors. Using chemical genomics in conjunction with phosphoproteomic analyses in RET-rearranged cells we identify the CCDC6-RETI788N mutation and drug-induced MAPK pathway reactivation as possible mechanisms, by which tumors may escape the activity of RET inhibitors. Our data provide mechanistic insight into the druggability of RET kinase fusions that may be of help for the development of effective therapies targeting such tumors.

The combination of the biocatalytic features of enzymes with the unique physical properties of nanoparticles in a biohybrid system provides a promising approach for the development of advanced bioelectrocatalytic devices. This study describes the construction of photoelectrochemical signal chains based on CdSe/ZnS quantum dot (QD) modified gold electrodes as light switchable elements, and low molecular weight redox molecules for the combination with different biocatalysts. Photoelectrochemical and photoluminescence experiments verify that electron transfer can be achieved between the redox molecules hexacyanoferrate and ferrocene, and the QDs under illumination. Since for both redox mediators a concentration dependent photocurrent change has been found, light switchable enzymatic signal chains are built up with fructose dehydrogenase (FDH) and pyrroloquinoline quinone-dependent glucose dehydrogenase ((PQQ) GDH) for the detection of sugars. After immobilization of the enzymes at the QD electrode the biocatalytic oxidation of the substrates can be followed by conversion of the redox mediator in solution and subsequent detection at the QD electrode. Furthermore, (PQQ) GDH has been assembled together with ferrocenecarboxylic acid on top of the QD electrode for the construction of a funtional biohybrid architecture, showing that electron transfer can be realized from the enzyme over the redox mediator to the QDs and subsequently to the electrode in a completely immobilized fashion. The results obtained here do not only provide the basis for light-switchable biosensing and bioelectrocatalytic applications, but may also open the way for self-driven point-of-care systems by combination with solar cell approaches (power generation at the QD electrode by enzymatic substrate consumption).

Berry shrivel is becoming an increasing concern for winegrowers all over the world. Until today, no single factor causing this physiological disorder has been determined. Studies concerning berry shrivel conducted in Austria have shown that an unbalanced ratio of K and Mg in the soil is a likely factor contributing to the disorder. The aims of the present study were to establish a better understanding of the causes and consequences of berry shrivel and observe the effects of K and Mg fertilization via the soil on the incidence of berry shrivel, the mineral composition of affected berries and the resulting wine quality. A two-year fertilization trial was conducted on two sites located within southern Germany with the varieties 'Zweigelt' and 'Pinot Blanc'. Different amounts of K and Mg were applied each year at both locations in order to generate different ratios of K and Mg in the soil. Before harvest, the incidences of berry shrivel of the different treatments were determined. In addition, macronutrients including K, Mg and Ca that were translocated in healthy berries and berries affected by berry shrivel were determined at harvest. To compare the quality of wine influenced by berry shrivel, different wines were produced consisting of shrivelled berries, berries affected by bunch stem necrosis and healthy berries. In the soil fertilization trials, no significant differences in the incidences of berry shrivel were observed in relation to the soil fertilization. Major differences were found in the wine qualities of the different wines. Wines produced from healthy berries were always rated as the best wines, whereas wines produced from shrivelled berries were always rated as the lowest quality. The low quality parameters found in the must did not improve in the wine making process. Wines produced from berries affected by bunch stem necrosis were rated better than berry-shrivel-wines, however, rated less than the wine produced from healthy berries. The determinations of macronutrients’ level in the berries showed significant differences regarding the concentration of Ca. In the variety 'Zweigelt' in 2009, an average of 36 mg∙L-1 of Ca were found in healthy berries and 107 mg∙L-1 in berries affected by berry shrivel. In 'Pinot Blanc' in 2010, the average of Ca in healthy berries was 46 mg∙L-1 and 70 mg∙L-1 in berries affected by berry shrivel. Hydrodynamic journal bearings are commonly used in many technical applications because they provide low friction and minimal wear. In general, flow simulation during the engineering design process is carried out by means of the Reynolds equation. The Reynolds equation is a non-linear two-dimensional differential equation, which is based on the pressure and the gap between shaft and bushing in relation to bearing clearance, eccentricity, bushing deformation and load. However, due its two-dimensional nature it is inaccurate where the lubricant flow inside the bearing becomes three-dimensional e.g., in the vicinity of feed holes or grooves. The work on hand presents the numerical approach and the cavitation model based on the Rayleigh-Plesset equation. Moreover, a bearing flow experiment was designed and constructed with the goal to validate numerical results. Finally, the validated 3D simulation model is applied on a real bearing, which was subject to an experimental investigation targeting cavitation. The numerical results include images of complex three-dimensional flow structures, vortices and vapor distributions. In comparison of 2D and 3D simulation, the two-dimensional approach gives wrong information in 2 out of 6 critical regions pertaining cavitation failing in both, over- and under-prediction of cavitation. In summary, a new numerical model expands the scope for the numerical simulation of the lubricant flow in hydrodynamic journal bearings and improves the prediction of cavitation.

To evaluate the predictive validity of early response in first-episode schizophrenia within a 1-year follow-up trial and to compare the resulting cutoff to the currently proposed early response definition (20% improvement by week 2).Receiver operator characteristic (ROC) analyses were used to identify the predictive validity of the psychopathological improvement of treatment from week 1 to week 8, regarding the maintenance of response until week 52 as well as to define the most reasonable cutoff in 132 first-episode patients. The Youden Index (maximum of sensitivity and specificity) was used to compare the newly developed and the commonly used early response definition.Starting with week 6, a reasonable validity to predict the maintenance of response was found (area under the curve = 0.721) with the best fitting cutoff being a 51.6% PANSS total score improvement. Using this cutoff 74 patients (56%) were correctly identified to become responder and maintain response during follow-up (sensitivity: 0.747). The Youden Index was higher applying the newly developed early response cutoff featuring higher specificity compared to the commonly used early response definition.Regarding long-term treatment, it seems more appropriate to base predictions of the patient's maintenance of response not before 6 weeks of treatment.

The family Ichneumonidae represents a very species-rich family of parasitoid Hymenoptera. In Norway, 1583 different Ichneumonid species have been reported so far. The present survey gives distributional records for 98 additional species of the family Ichneumonidae (Hymenoptera) previously not known from Norway. 21 of them have hitherto not been reported from Scandinavia, including the first Palaearctic record of Syrphophilus tricinctus (Ashmead, 1902). On October 1, 2011 the EUDAT project was launched to target a pan-European solution to the challenge of data prolif- eration in Europe's scientific and research communities. Aiming to contribute to the production of a Collaborative Data Infrastructure driven by researchers' needs, the project is coordinated by CSC - IT Center for Science, Finland, and co-funded by the European Commission's Framework Programme 7. EUDAT aims at providing Europe's scientific and research communities with a sustainable pan-European infrastructure for improved access to scientific data. Burgeoning volumes of valuable and complex data - newly available from powerful new scientific instruments, simulations and digitization of library resources - represents a fantastic opportunity for science, but has created new challenges related to data manage- ment, access and preservation. The EUDAT consortium comprises 25 European partners, including data centers, technology providers, research communities and funding agencies from 13 countries, who will work together to deliver a Collaborative Data Infrastruc- ture that can sustainably meet future researchers' needs.

Listrodromus javae HEINRICH 1975, new M a t e r i a l: Laos, Bolikhansai province, Ban Nape environment, 350 m, 18°20´N 105°08´E, 1 7- 16.v.2004, leg. Jendek & Sausa; Laos, Phongsaly province, 21°41´N 102°6`E, Phongsaly environment, ca. 1500 m, 1 6-17.v.2004, leg. Vit Kuban (Linz). D e s c r i p t i o n: Body length 7.5 mm. Flagellum short, filiform, somewhat thickened beyond middle, with 20 flagellomeres, first flagellomere (without anellus) about 3.2-3.5 times as long as wide, preapical flagellomeres square. Frons, vertex and gena almost smooth and strongly shining, face and clypeus with small scattered puncture, clypeus almost smooth apically. Malar space almost 2 times as long as the width of mandibular base. Mesosoma shining. Pronotum punctured in front and smooth behind the distinct epomia, upper margin thickened, with scattered puncture. Notauli distinct on the anterior border, mesoscutum with puncture in the anterior third, otherwise smooth and shining, Mesopleura and metapleura with dense puncture or puncture-striation, speculum very large, smooth. Prepectal and coxal carinae strong, with transverse ribs, sternauli impressed in the anterior third of mesopleura. Scutellum moderately elevated, transverse, with lateral carinae in the basal 0.8, with scattered puncture. Propodeum with complete carination, spiracles oval (index about 1.5). Area superomedia and areae superoexternae smooth, propodeum with strong puncture elsewhere. Coxae with dense puncture, hind coxa without scopa. Hind femur club-shaped, about 3.1 times as long as high. All claws with 4-5 strong teeth. Areolet slightly narrowed in front, minimal distance of intercubiti about 4-5 times their width, 2m-cu reaching the areolet before its middle. Nervulus of front wing interstitial. Metasoma amblypygous. Postpetiole moderately widened to the apex, without distinct dorsal carinae and with scattered puncture. Second tergite elongate, about 1.2-1.3 times as long as wide, third tergite almost square, gastrocoeli square, thyridia small, transverse, each about 0.6-0.7 times as wide as their interval (fig. 3), second tergite with coarse puncture in the basal half and very fine and scattered puncture in the apical one. Third and fourth tergites with scattered puncture basally, otherwise like the following tergites smooth and shining. Colour black. Yellowish are face (except a black longitudinal stripe in the middle), frontal orbits, large spot on the upper outer orbit, scape beneath, upper margin of pronotum, subalar ridge, base of wings, scutellum, often postscutellum, dorsolateral spots on postpetiolus and tergite 2, apical band of third tergite, apical spots on tergites 4-7, front and middle coxae and trochanters, dorsal and ventral spots on hind coxa. Legs and tergites 1 and 2 red. Taxonomical remark: The taxon has been described from Java by HEINRICH (1934: 243) as the male of Listrodromus simplex, but was renamed as L. javae in a subsequent publication (HEINRICH 1975: 459). Flagellum with 33-34 flagellomeres, without tyloids. Hind femora about 4.1 times as long as high, areolet rhomboid, narrowly stalked or pointed anteriorly. Second tergite about 1.05 times as long as wide, with very dense puncture and concentric rugosity in the basal third. Thyridia almost transverse, each of them about 0,8 times as wide as their interval. The male from Malaysia is different from the redescription given by HEINRICH (1974: 127-128) and also from the typical specimen from Laos by ivory stripes or rings on flagellomeres 9-15 and completely black middle coxa. Palpi, scapus, apophyses and areae posteroexternae reddish (ivory in the Vietnamese specimen). Ivory are clypeus, collare, lower and hind edge of pronotum, subalar ridge, usually scutellum centrally, tergites 6 and 7. Legs including coxae and trochanters reddish, hind femora and tibiae darkened apically, hind tarsi black. Pterostigma brown. Flagellum with 42 (specimen from Nepal) or 45 (specimen from Vietnam) flagellomeres, completely black, without whitish ring, first flagellomere about 3.5 to 3.9 times longer than wide, the 14th or 16th flagellomere square. Area superomedia about 1.3 times as long as wide. Ivory are the orbits beneath the flagellar scrobes, longitudinal stripe at malar space, apical spot of femora I and tibia I anterior. Otherwise as described for Lamprojoppa caerula CAMERON (TERESHKIN 2009: 1512-1513). D i s t r i b u t i o n: Known from India and Myanmar, new records for Nepal and Vietnam. Taxonomical remark: The available specimens differ from Lamprojoppa caerula CAMERON by their black flagellum and slenderer first flagellomere. The black flagellum had also been noted for Lamprojoppa fuscinerva CAMERON by HEINRICH (1974: 10). However, the ivory pattern on the orbits is more extensive than in the type specimen (HEINRICH 1974: 10, the type could not been studied by me). According to HEINRICH (1974: 113) this group of large, blue-metallic coloured Platylabini contains several closely related species that have not been studied in detail yet.
