While forest management strongly influences biodiversity, it remains unclear how the structural and compositional changes caused by management affect different community dimensions (e.g. richness, specialisation, abundance or completeness) and how this differs between taxa. We assessed the effects of nine forest features (representing stand structure, heterogeneity, and tree composition) on thirteen above‐ and belowground trophic groups of plants, animals, fungi, and bacteria in 150 temperate forest plots differing in their management type. Canopy cover decreased light resources, which increased community specialisation but reduced overall diversity and abundance. Features increasing resource types and diversifying microhabitats (admixing of oaks and conifers) were important and mostly affected richness. Belowground groups responded differently to those aboveground and had weaker responses to most forest features. Our results show that we need to consider forest features rather than broad management types and highlight the importance of considering several groups and community dimensions to better inform conservation.

Fatty acids (FAs) are useful biomarkers in food web ecology because they are typically assimilated as a complete molecule and transferred into consumer tissue with minor or no modification, allowing the dietary routing between different trophic levels. However, the FA trophic marker approach is still hampered by the limited knowledge in lipid metabolism of the soil fauna. This study used entirely labelled palmitic acid ((13)C16:0, 99 atom%) as a tracer in fatty acid metabolism pathways of two widespread soil Collembola, Protaphorura fimata and Heteromurus nitidus. In order to investigate the fate and metabolic modifications of this precursor, a method of isotopologue profiling is presented, performed by mass spectrometry using single ion monitoring. Moreover, the upstream laboratory feeding experiment is described, as well as the extraction and methylation of dominant lipid fractions (neutral lipids, phospholipids) and the related formula and calculations. Isotopologue profiling does not only yield the overall (13)C enrichment in fatty acids derived from the (13)C labeled precursor but also produces the pattern of isotopologues exceeding the mass of the parent ion (i.e., the FA molecular ion M(+)) of each labeled FA by one or more mass units (M(+1), M(+2), M(+3), etc.). This knowledge allows conclusions on the ratio of dietary routing of an entirely consumed FA in comparison to de novo biosynthesis. The isotopologue profiling is suggested as a useful tool for evaluation of fatty acid metabolism in soil animals to disentangle trophic interactions.

Introduction Food-web models, which depict the trophic relationships between organisms within a community, form a powerful and versatile approach to study the relationships between community structure and ecosystem functioning. Although food-web models have recently been applied to a wide range of ecological studies (Memmott, 2009; Sanders et al., 2014), such approaches can be greatly improved by introducing high-resolution trophic information from empirical studies and experiments that realistically describe topological structure and energy flows (de Ruiter et al., 2005). Over the last decades major technological advances have been made in empirically characterizing trophic networks by describing, in detail, the connectedness and flows in food webs. Existing empirical techniques, such as stable isotope probing (SIP) (Layman et al., 2012), have been refined and new approaches have been created by combining methods, e.g., combining Raman spectroscopy or fatty acid analysis with SIP (Ruess et al., 2005a; Li et al., 2013). These empirical methods can provide insight into different aspects of food webs and together form an extensive toolbox to investigate trophic interactions. It is crucial to recognize the potential and limitations of a range of empirical approaches in order to choose the right method in the design of empirically based food-web studies. Empirically based food webs are generally classified according to the type of input information that is required. In the following lines we will provide an overview of four types of food-web model: connectedness webs, semi-quantitative webs, energy-flow webs, and functional webs. Paine (1980) introduced three of those webs, which are widely accepted and applied in food-web studies across ecosystems. We propose to add a fourth type of empirically based food web, the semi-quantitative web. All of these food webs have the same basic structure, but the conceptual webs differ in the type of trophic information they describe and represent (Figure 16.1). Connectedness webs (Figure 16.1a) define the basic structure of a food web by describing the food-web connections per se.

Subsurface microorganisms are essential constituents of the soil purification processes associated with groundwater quality. In particular, soil enzyme activity determines the biodegradation of organic compounds passing through the soil profile. Transects from surface soil to a depth of 3.5 m were investigated for microbial and chemical soil characteristics at two groundwater recharge sites and one control site. The functional diversity of the microbial community was analyzed via the activity of eight enzymes. Acid phosphomonoesterase was dominant across sites and depths, followed by l-leucine aminopeptidase and β-glucosidase. Structural [e.g. phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) pattern] and functional microbial diversities were linked to each other at the nonwatered site, whereas amendment with nutrients (DOC, NO3−) by flooding uncoupled this relationship. Microbial biomass did not differ between sites, whereas microbial respiration was the highest at the watered sites. Hence, excess nutrients available due to artificial groundwater recharge could not compensate for the limitation by others (e.g. phosphorus as assigned by acid phosphomonoesterase activity). Instead, at a similar microbial biomass, waste respiration via overflow metabolism occurred. In summary, ample supply of carbon by flooding led to a separation of decomposition and microbial growth, which may play an important role in regulating purification processes during groundwater recharge

Subsurface microorganisms are crucial for contaminant degradation and maintenance of groundwater quality. This study investigates the microbial biomass and community composition [by phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs)], as well as physical and chemical soil characteristics at woodland flooding sites of an artificial groundwater recharge system used for drinking water production. Vertical soil profiles to c. 4 m at two watered and one nonwatered site were analyzed. The microbial biomass was equal in watered and nonwatered sites, and considerable fractions (25-42%) were located in 40-340 cm depth. The microbial community structure differed significantly between watered and nonwatered sites, predominantly below 100 cm depth. Proportions of the bacterial PLFAs 16:1ω5, 16:1ω7, cy17:0 and 18:1ω9t, and the long-chained PLFAs 22:1ω9 and 24:1ω9 were more prominent at the watered sites, whereas branched, saturated PLFAs (iso/anteiso) dominated at the nonwatered site. PLFA community indices indicated stress response (trans/cis ratio), higher nutrient availability (unsaturation index) and changes in membrane fluidity (iso/anteiso ratio) due to flooding. In conclusion, water recharge processes led to nutrient input and altered environmental conditions, which resulted in a highly active and adapted microbial community residing in the vadose zone that effectively degraded organic compounds

Umweltveränderungen durch natürliche und/oder menschliche Einflüsse (insbesondere der Verlust und die Fragmentierung von Lebensraum) sind wichtige Faktoren, die zum weltweiten Artenschwund beitragen. Einer der entscheidendsten Beiträge zum weltweiten Rückgang der biologischen Vielfalt, ist der kommerzielle Holzeinschlag. Insbesondere in tropischen Regenwäldern, etwa in Westafrika, ist dies besonders besorgniserregend, da wenig untersuchte, diverse Wirbeltiergemeinschaften von einem starken kommerziellen Holzeinschlag betroffen sind. Frühere Studien haben bereits die negativen Auswirkungen großflächiger Abholzung auf die taxonomische und funktionale Vielfalt von Amphibiengemeinschaften, aber auch auf die Gesundheit von Individuen identifiziert. Umweltveränderungen können sich also auch nachteilig auf eine Wirts- Parasit-Beziehung auswirken, was nicht zuletzt zu einer verringerten Überlebensfähigkeit der Wirtsarten führen kann. Die Untersuchung der Auswirkungen von Störungen Abholzung und Umweltveränderungen auf Amphibien, sowie auf bestehende Wirts-Parasiten-Beziehungen sind daher von größter Bedeutung um nachhaltige Waldwirtschaft und zukünftige Naturschutzmaßnahmen planen zu können. In dieser Arbeit möchte ich mittels eines Regenerationsgradienten nach einer Störung (Abholzung) untersuchen, wie sich die Dynamik einer Amphibiengemeinschaft verschiebt und wie diese Störung die Wirts-Parasit-Beziehung beeinflusst. Ich verwende einen kombinierten Datensatz (Amphibie [Wirt], Milbe [Parasit] und Umweltbedingungen [Habitat]) der über zwei Zeiträumen im Abstand von 15 Jahren (1999-2000 und 2016-2017) an identischen Standorten (vor 45 Jahren abgeholzter Wald und Primärwald) im Taï-Nationalpark (TNP) in der Elfenbeinküste gesammelt wurde, um die Anpassungsfähigkeit von Fröschen und ihren Parasiten an sich ändernde Umgebungen zu untersuchen. In einem ersten Artikel unterstreiche ich die Bedeutung auch kleiner Waldgebiete als potenzielle Quellen für unbeschriebene Biodiversität. In einem kleinen, nie zuvor untersuchten Sumpfwald in der südöstlichen Elfenbeinküste fand ich eine neue Blattstreufroschart der Gattung Phrynobatrachus. Anhand charakteristischer morphologischer Merkmale, einer beträchtlichen, molekulargenetischen Distanz zu anderen westafrikanischen Phrynobatrachus-Arten, sowie eines individuellen, männlichen Anzeigerufes beschreibe ich Phrynobatrachus tanoeensis sp. nov. als eine für die Wissenschaft neue Art. Im zweiten Artikel untersuche ich die Widerstandsfähigkeit westafrikanischer Frösche in Wäldern, die vor über 45 Jahren selektiv abgeholzt wurden. Ich vergleiche die Diversität, Abundanz, Zusammensetzung und den Lebensraum von Amphibiengemeinschaften in abgeholzten und Primärwäldern innerhalt zweier Zeiträume (2000 und 2016- 2017). Ich konnte herausarbeiten, dass sich die Struktur des zuvor abgeholzten Waldes im Laufe von 45 Jahren langsam der des Primärwaldes annäherte, wobei die sichtbarsten Veränderungen in den letzten 15 Jahren auftraten. Während ich 30 Jahre nach dem Holzeinschlag zwar keine Unterscheide mehr in der Diversität und Abundanz der Amphibiengemeinschaft zum Primärwald feststellen konnte, beobachtete ich jedoch eine fortschreitende Konvergenz der Zusammensetzung der Amphibiengesellschaften in beiden Waldtypen. In den zuvor abgeholzten Wäldern erholten sich mehrere waldspezialisierte Arten (FS), während die Zahl mehrerer Generalisten (FG) über den 15-jährigen Probenahmezeitraum stetig abnahm. Diese Ergebnisse deuten darauf hin, dass 45 Jahre nach der Abholzung der gestörte Lebensraum allmählich die Heterogenität des ungestörten Lebensraums annimmt, der in der in der Lage ist die originale Amphibiengemeinschaft aus Waldspezialisten (FS) zu erhalten. Im dritten Artikel untersuche ich die Faktoren, die zu einem erhöhten Milbenbefall in den Amphibiengesellschaften des TNP führen. Ich fand heraus, dass die Wirts-Parasit-Beziehung zwischen Milben der Gattung Endotrombicula sehr spezifisch auf Frösche der Gattung Phrynobatrachus zugeschnitten ist, da offensichtlich nur die vier Arten P. phyllophilus, P. alleni, P. villiersi und P. plicatus befallen werden. Ebenso zeigte sich der Milbenbefall abhängig von der Art (höchste Prävalenz bei P. phyllophilus gefolgt von P. alleni), des Geschlechts (höhere Prävalenz bei Männchen als bei Weibchen, sowohl bei P. alleni und P. phyllophilus), des Alters (höhere Prävalenz bei Erwachsenen als bei Jungtieren in P. alleni) sowie der Jahreszeit (höhere Prävalenz während der Regenzeit im Vergleich zur Trockenzeit bei P. phyllophilus). Ich diskutiere diese Ergebnisse mit Bezug auf die Ökologie der Endotrombicula-Milben, die stark von feuchten Bedingungen abhängig sind, sowie die Überschneidung dieser Bedingungen mit denen der Wirtsfroscharten überschneiden. Des Weiteren beobachtete ich, dass die Prävalenz des Milbenbefalls in den letzten 15 Jahren (1999-2000 bis 2016-2017) abgenommen hat. Dieser steht möglicherweise im Zusammenhang mit den lokalen Auswirkungen des Klimawandels, was die in den letzten Jahren deutlich zurückgegangenen Niederschläge erklären würde. Meine Arbeiten zeigen, dass das Verständnis der Vielfalt westafrikanischer Amphibien noch lange nicht vollständig ist. Es zeigt sich, dass weiterhin Forschungsarbeit geleistet werden muss, um den tatsächlichen Amphibienreichtum besser abschätzen zu können. Darüber hinaus habe ich gezeigt, dass sich Amphibiengemeinschaften in abgeholzten Wälder zurück zum ursprünglicheren Zustand regenerieren können, was die Bedeutung unterstreicht, genutzten Wäldern ausreichend Zeit zu lassen, um sich zu regenerieren. Ob die Milbenprävalenz tatsächlich auf Grund des Klimawandels abnahm, sollte in Zukunft genauer untersucht werden. Environmental changes due to both natural phenomena and/or human disturbance (i.e. habitat loss, disturbance and fragmentation) are important factors contributing to global species declines. Commercial logging is amongst the greatest contributor to this disturbance resulting in widespread biodiversity declines. In tropical rainforests, particularly those of West Africa, this is particularly troubling as diverse vertebrate assemblages are subject to heavy commercial logging. Previous studies have identified negative impacts of these logging practices on the taxonomic and functional diversity of amphibian communities and species. Furthermore, logging and other environmental changes may affect host-parasite interactions, resulting in exacerbated negative impacts of these pressures and reduced survivability of host species. As such, determining the effects of logging on amphibians, their subsequent recovery following selective logged forest, and the effects of environmental change on host-parasite relationships, will be paramount for informing future conservation action. In this thesis, I aim to determine how amphibian community dynamics shift over a regeneration gradient following disturbance (logging), and how this disturbance influences amphibian-parasite interactions. I use combined data sets (amphibian, parasite and habitat) from two time periods 15 years apart (1999-2000 and 2016-2017) collected in identical sites (logged forest since 45 years and old growth forest) within Taï National Park (TNP) Ivory Coast, in order to examine the adaptive capacities of frogs and their parasites to changing environments. In the first paper, I underline the importance of forest, even small, as potential source of undescribed biodiversity. In that small swamp forest, never survey before located in southeastern Ivory Coast, I found a new leaf-litter species of the Phrynobatrachus genus. Based on morphological characteristics, considerable molecular genetic distance to other West African Phrynobatrachus species, as well as advertisement calls, I describe Phrynobatrachus tanoeensis sp. nov. as a species new to science. In the second paper, I investigate the resilience of West African frogs in forests selectively logged over 45 years ago by comparing data (amphibian diversity, abundance, composition and habitat) from previously logged and old growth forest over two time periods (2000 and 2016-2017). I found that the structure of previously logged forest slowly recovered toward old growth forest states over the course of 45 years, with most visible changes occurring in the last 15 years. I also found no changes in amphibian diversity and abundance in the previously logged forest over time but observed a progressive convergence of amphibian composition in previously logged forests toward that of unlogged forest amphibian communities. In contrast, several forest specialist species (FS) recovered, whilst forest generalist (FG) species declined in the previously logged forest over the 15 years sampling period. These findings suggest that 45 years since logging activities the previously logged forest gradually provides habitat heterogeneity capable of maintaining FS amphibian species and more intact amphibian communities. In paper 3, I investigate the factors leading to increased mite infestation in the amphibian assemblages of TNP. I found that mites of the Endotrombicula genus seem to be specific to Phrynobatrachus frogs and infested only four leaf-litter species (P. phyllophilus, P. alleni, P. villiersi and P. plicatus). I also found that mite infestation was associated with species (highest prevalence in P. phyllophilus followed by P. alleni), sex (higher prevalence in males than females in P. alleni and P. phyllophilus), age (higher adult prevalence than juveniles in P alleni) as well as season (higher prevalence during the wet compared to the dry season in P. phyllophilus). I discuss these findings with reference to the ecology of Endotrombicula mites which rely heavily on humid conditions, conditions which overlap with the reproductive requirements of the host taxa. Additionally, I observed that the prevalence of mite infestation decreased over the last 15 years (1999-2000 to 2016-2017). This decreased mite infestation over time is potentially linked to local climate change, which exhibited distinctly lower rainfall in recent years. These studies show that West African amphibian diversity is far to be complete. Thus, more survey work needs to be done in order to have an idea of amphibian richness. Additionally, I showed that to environmental changes in the context of recovery following logging have a positive impact on amphibian. Forest amphibian community recovers in the previously logged forest, which highlight the importance to leave those forest to regenerate. However, although mite prevalence decreased over time, future research of post logging restoration and climate change impact on mite prevalence need be more investigate.

Das Aussterberisiko einer Art ist nicht zufällig, sondern wird von mehreren Faktoren bestimmt, die geografische, ökologische und morphologische Merkmale umfassen. Einige dieser Merkmale sind Teil der Kriterien zur Einschätzung der Gefährdung einer Art, wie zum Beispiel in der Roten Liste der IUCN. Diese Beurteilungen sind ein wichtiges Werkzeug für den Artenschutz, da sie eine Verteilung der Maßnahmen auf die am stärksten gefährdeten Arten ermöglichen. Dies ist besonders wichtig für Amphibien, die Wirbeltiergruppe mit dem derzeit höchsten Anteil an bedrohten Arten. Bei einem großen Teil der Arten fehlt jedoch eine Einschätzung des Aussterberisikos. Weiter mangelt es auch an einer endgültigen Verifizierung des Einflusses der genutzten Merkmale auf das Aussterberisiko, da Aussterbeereignisse auf neontologischen Zeitskalen schwer zu erkennen sind. Der Fossilbericht stellt ein enormes Archiv an bereits geschehenen Aussterbeereignissen dar und bietet die Möglichkeit den Einfluss bestimmter Merkmale auf die Gefährdung zu testen. In der vorliegenden Arbeit untersuche ich Merkmale von Amphibienarten, die zum Aussterberisiko dieser zunehmend gefährdeten Gruppe beitragen und bestätige die Bedeutung der geographischen Reichweite für das Aussterberisiko. Die in dem sich aktuell entwickelnden Gebiet Conservation Paleobiology angesiedelte Arbeit konzentriert sich auf die Verbindung von paläontologischen und neontologischen Daten, und wie diese Kombination dazu beitragen kann das Wissen über Aussterberisiko-beeinflussende Faktoren zu erweitern. Dies wird durch die Analyse verschiedener im Fossilbericht überlieferter Artmerkmale und der Kombination der Erkenntnisse mit Ergebnissen der Roten Liste und Klimadaten erreicht. In meiner Arbeit zeige ich mögliche Anwendungen des Fossilberichts auf aktuellen Themen des Artenschutzes und wie eine Kombination beider Bereiche zum tieferen Verständnis von Gefährdungsfaktoren beitragen kann. The extinction risk of a species is not random, but rather shaped by several factors comprising geographical, environmental and morphological traits. Some of these traits have been incorporated in assessment procedures for the classification of extant species' extinction risk, such as the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. These assessments are an important tool for conservation purposes, as they direct the available resources to species that are most reliant on support. This is especially important for amphibians, which are the the most endangered terrestrial vertebrate taxon today. However, a large number of species lack an assessment for extinction risk. Also, additional verification of the general influence of incorporated traits on extinction risk is needed, as real extinction events are difficult to detect on neontological time scales. The fossil record offers the opportunity to test the influence of certain traits on extinction risk as it provides an enormous archive of extinction events that already happened. In this thesis, I examine traits in amphibian species that contribute to the extinction risk of this increasingly endangered group and provide support for the importance of geographic range size on the extinction risk of species. Placed in the developing field of Conservation Paleobiology, the study concentrates on the connection between paleontological and neontological data and how this unique combination can add to the knowledge about traits that shaped the extinction risk of amphibian species. This is achieved by investigating species traits, conserved in the amphibian fossil record, and combining these findings with results from the IUCN Red List and climate data. The present dissertation shows possible applications of the fossil record to current questions in conservation biology and shows how a combination of both fields contributes to the understanding of factors that influence the extinction risk of species.

Soil aggregate stability is an integral marker of soil fertility. Well aggregated soil contributes to high rootability, a proper water and aeration regime, resistance against compaction and erosion as well as storage capability of organic carbon. The aggregation of soil primary particles and microaggregates is promoted not only by a large variety of physico-chemical but also biological interactions, that are based on e.g. the excretion of bacterial extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) or fungal glomalin, concretion of biomineralization products or adsorption of hydrophobic cell debris on soil particle surfaces. Hence, microbial growth, exudation and grazing of bacterial-feeding organisms on sessile prokaryotes – most living within a viscouse EPS matrix (biofilms) – are assumed to play a regulating role in the occlusion of POM within soil aggregates. In consequence, microbial communities would have physical influence on organic matter cycling e.g. in agricultural soils. In the present doctoral thesis, a sandy agricultural soil was treated with EPS degrading enzymes, the bacterial feeding nematode Acrobeloides buetschlii or two different non-converging microbial communities. After these treatments, respective changes of POM occlusive strength were measured. Results show no or little influence of microbial communities living in pores above the lower mesopore scale (~10 μm) on the POM occlusive strength, whereas the applied methods were not suitable to affect organisms within smaller pores. If there is a markable stabilizing effect of microbial processes, it is located within the finer mesopores as indicated by current literature. The present work highlighted this indication from a new point of view. Future research should focus on the role of EPS as an aggregation agent within small mesopores. Gut aggregierter Boden unterstützt Durchwurzelbarkeit, Wasser- und Luftversorgung, die Widerstandsfähigkeit gegen Verdichtung und Erosion sowie seine Fähigkeit organischen Kohlenstoff zu speichern. Zur Aggregierung von Primärpartikeln und Mikroaggregaten trägt eine große Vielfalt nicht nur physico-chemischer sondern auch biologischer Wechselwirkungen bei, die z.B. auf die Ausscheidung bakterieller extrazellulärer polymerer Substanzen (EPS) oder pilzlichen Glomalins, auf Biomineralisationsprodukte oder die Adsorption hydrophober Zellfragmente an Bodenpartikel zurückgehen. Daher kann angenommen werden, dass mikrobielles Wachstum, Exsudation und die Beweidung sessiler Prokaryoten, von denen die meisten in einer viskosen EPS Matrix leben (Biofilm), einen regulierenden Einfluss auf die Stärke der POM Okklusion in Bodenaggregaten haben. Folgerichtig hätten mikrobielle Gemeinschaften einen physikalischen Einfluss auf den Kohlenstoffkreislauf z.B. in Ackerböden. In dieser Arbeit wurde sandiger Ackerboden mit EPS-verdauenden Enzymen, der auf bakteriellen Biofilmen weidenden Nematodenart Acrobeoloides buetschlii sowie verschiedenen nicht konvergierenden mikrobiellen Gemeinschaften behandelt. Nach der Inkubation wurde die jeweilige Veränderung der POM-Okklusionsstärke gemessen. Die Ergebnisse zeigen wenig bis keinen Einfluss der im oberen Mesoporenbereich (< 10 μm) lebenden microbiellen Gemeinschaften auf die POM-Okklusionsstärke, während die verwendeten Methoden nicht geeignet waren, Organismen in feineren Poren zu erreichen. Sofern ein bedeutender stabilisierender Effekt durch mikrobielle Prozesse existiert, ist dieser im unteren Mesoporenbereich verortet, wie in der aktuellen Literatur angedeutet wird. Diese Arbeit hebt jenen Effekt aus einem neuen Blickwinkel hervor. Zukünftige Arbeiten sollten ihren Fokus auf die Rolle von EPS als Aggregierungsmittel im unteren Mesoporenbereich legen.

In der vorliegenden Arbeit wurden die Einflüsse der landwirtschaftlichen Nutzung auf die Struktur und Biomasse von Nematoden entlang eines Tiefengradientens und innerhalb zweier Vegetationsperioden an einem Ackerstandort untersucht. Die Freilandanalyse der Nematodengemeinschaft wies auf ein mit Nährstoffen angereichertes und gestörtes Ökosystem, mit einer geringen Diversität, hin. Entlang des Tiefengradienten bildeten die Nematoden Metacommunities, welche Umweltgegebenheiten wie Nahrungsquellen und abiotischen Faktoren widerspiegeln. Signifikant höhere Biomassen wurden unter Weizen im Vergleich zu Mais als Ackerfrucht beobachtet. Die Streuapplikation induzierte einen „bottom-up“ Effekt mit größeren Biomassen in den niedrigen als in den höheren trophischen Stufen. Die Nematoden Biomassen sowie die faunistischen Indizes (Channel Index, Enrichment Index) zeigten, dass der Kohlenstofffluss im Bakterienkanal des Bodens dominierte. Allerdings deckte das 13C Pulse-Labelling Experiment im Feld auf, dass der Kohlenstofffluss durch die Pilzgemeinschaft sowie die pilzfressenden Nematoden wesentlich höhere Umsatzraten aufweist. In einem 14C-Laborexperiment wurde ein vollständiges Budget des Flusses von wurzelbürtigem Kohlenstoff in das Nahrungsnetz der Nematoden bestimmt. Hierbei wiesen die pflanzenparasitären Nematoden die höchsten 14C-Gehalte innerhalb weniger Tage auf, da sie direkt an den Wurzeln fressen und über die Herbivorenkette den Nährstoffzyklus im Boden eröffnen. The present research considered the effects of agricultural management practice on the nematode community structure and biomass in three different depths and two successive vegetation periods at an arable field site. The resource quality was manipulated by crop plant and organic amendment, to investigate the major soil carbon pathways based on roots, bacteria and fungi. The nematode community analysis pointed to a highly enriched and disturbed ecosystem with low biodiversity. Along the depth gradient the nematodes formed distinct metacommunities, reflecting resource availability and abiotic environmental factors. Wheat supported significantly greater nematode biomass than maize. The litter amendment induced bottom-up effects, with greater biomass allocation at lower than at higher trophic levels. The biomass of nematode families as well as faunal indices (Channel Index, Enrichment Index) revealed a predominance of the bacterial carbon channel in the arable soil. A 13C pulse-labelling experiment investigating the flux of root- derived C into the soil food web revealed high turnover rates in the fungal carbon pathway. This was evident for soil fungi as well as for fungal-feeding nematodes and contradicts general assumptions of a more active bacterial pathway in arable soils. A laboratory experiment with 14C isotope was used to compile a complete budget for the root-derived carbon in the nematode food web. Here plant-feeding nematodes, which feed on living plant roots, thereby opening the root C cycling into the food web, showed highest amounts of 14C allocation within a few days.

Diese Arbeit untersucht die Reaktion der Stieleiche auf pflanzenparasitären Nematoden mittels RNA-Sequenzierung und Analyse von stabilen Isotopen und Fettsäuren. Einblicke in Rhizosphäreninteraktionen wurden über mutualistische Partner (Ektomykorrhizapilze, Rhizosphärenhelferbakterien), fungivore Collembolen und multitrophische Gemeinschaften gewonnen. Die Struktur und Biomasse der Mikroorganismen sowie die Fitness der Eichen wurden erfasst. Die Effekte wurzelfressender Nematoden auf die Eiche wurden durch das endogene rhythmische Wachstum des Baumes reguliert. Die Nematoden lösten eine stärkere Reaktion während des Sprosswachstumsschubs aus, u.a. Aktivierung von Abwehrmechanismen und Hemmung der Photosynthese, wohingegen beim Wurzelwachstumsschub pathogen bezogene Signale unterdrückt waren. Die Anwesenheit des Pilzsymbionten schwächte die Pflanzenabwehr und verbesserte die Stresstoleranz, was indirekt das Wachstum der Mikroorganismen förderte. Die Helferbakterien begünstigten den Mykorrhizapilz, was wiederum das Pflanzenwachstum stimulierte und dem negativen Effekt der Nematoden entgegenwirkte. Parasitäre Nematoden und fungivore Collembolen beeinflussten die Verteilung des pflanzlichen Kohlenstoffes unabhängig voneinander; Nematoden verringerten und Collembolen verbesserten die Allokation von Photoassimilaten in Gram-postiven Bakterien. Zudem war steigende trophische Diversität der Bodenfauna in der Rhizosphäre entscheidend für die Balance innerhalb der mikrobiellen Gemeinschaft, welche das Pflanzenwachstum fördert. Diese Arbeit stellt die Bedeutung der endogenen Ressourcenzuteilung von Pflanzen für unterirdische biotische Wechselbeziehungen heraus. Diese Pflanzenstrategie als bedeutender Faktor für Rhizosphärenprozesse sollte in zukünftige Studien Berücksichtigung finden. Die Einbeziehung der Hauptakteure in der Rhizosphäre ermöglicht zudem ein realistischeres Bild von Nematoden-Pflanzen Interaktionen und damit ein effektiveres Management., This thesis investigated the response of Pedunculate oak to the plant-parasitic nematode Pratylenchus penetrans, using RNA-sequencing, stable isotope labelling and fatty acid analyses. Insight into rhizosphere interactions was gained by employing beneficial biotic partners (ectomycorrhizal fungi, rhizosphere helper bacteria), fungal grazers (Collembola) and multitrophic environments. Microbial biomass and community structure as well as oak fitness were assessed. The effects of root-feeding nematodes on oak were largely governed by the endogenous rhythmic growth of the tree. The nematodes triggered a stronger response during shoot flush, e.g. activation of multi-layered defence mechanisms and repression of photosynthesis, as compared to root flush where pathogen-related signalling was repressed. With the presence of the mycorrhizal symbiont plant defence was attenuated and stress tolerance enhanced, indirectly promoting the growth of rhizosphere microorganisms. The helper bacteria fostered the ectomycorrhizal fungus, which in turn stimulated plant growth, counteracting the negative effects of nematodes. Plant-parasitic nematodes and Collembola grazers had independent roles in plant carbon allocation patterns, with nematodes hampering whilst Collembola enhancing the flux of recent photoassimilates to Gram-positive bacteria. Lastly, increasing trophic diversity of the soil fauna in the rhizosphere of oaks was crucial for the maintenances of a microbial community equilibrium that promotes plant growth. In sum, this study highlights the importance of endogenous resource allocation pattern of plants in determining the outcome of belowground biotic interactions. Therefore such plant traits should be considered as important drivers for rhizosphere processes in future studies. Moreover, taking into account the rhizosphere main players in studies on parasitic nematode-plant interactions will result in a more realistic picture and thus more effective nematode management.

Rezente Korallenriffe sind einer ganzen Reihe von Bedrohungen ausgesetzt. Das Pleistozän bietet die Gelegenheit Veränderungen an Korallenriffgemeinschaften durch Klimaschwankungen hinweg zu studieren und mit heutigen Riffen zu vergleichen. Am besten sind pleistozäne Riffe in der Karibik untersucht, während aus dem Indo-Pazifik, der über eine deutlich höhere Biodiversität verfügt, bisher nur wenige quantitative Studien vorliegen. Frühere Studien zeigen eine erstaunliche Stabilität und Langlebigkeit der Korallengemeinschaften hinsichtlich Diversität und taxonomischer Zusammensetzung trotz extremer Meeresspiegelschwankungen und starker klimatischer Veränderungen im Quartär. Die vorliegende Arbeit behandelt zwei Regionen, aus der quantitative Daten auf Artniveau über die Zusammensetzung der fossilen Korallengemeinschaften bisher weitestgehend fehlten: das tropische Vanuatu (Südpazifik) und der subtropische Sinai, Ägypten (nördliches Rotes Meer). In Vanuatu sind mindestens 5 fossile Riffterrassen mit einem Alter von etwa 5000 - 400.000 Jahren überliefert, von denen 4 detailliert untersucht werden konnten. Veränderungen in der Diversität wurden sowohl lateral als auch vertikal nur mit unterschiedlichen Riffhabitaten in Verbindung gebracht. Die Riffe waren insgesamt über die Interglaziale bin ins mittlere Holozän hinweg stabil. Nur die Gattung Acropora scheint erst in den letzten 96.000 Jahren häufiger zu werden. In Ägypten wurden Daten aus der jüngsten interglazialen Terrasse (MIS 5e, ~125.000 Jahre) mit rezenten Daten aus dem Roten Meer verglichen und eine Migration von Arten nach Norden während des letzten Interglazials belegt. Diese Beobachtung unterstützt frühere Arbeiten, die eine Verschiebung der Riffdiversität in höhere Breiten verbunden mit einer Abnahme der Diversität in niederen Breiten aufzeigten, sowie Studien, die das nördliche Rote Meer als mögliches Refugium für Korallen im Zuge der weiteren Klimaerwärmung sehen. The Pleistocene provides the opportunity to study changes of coral reef communities through times of climate change, and to compare fossil to recent reefs. Whereas Pleistocene reefs from the Caribbean are well studied and understood, the much larger Indo-Pacific region with a greater coral diversity is represented by only a few quantitative studies on community ecology. Previous studies observed an astonishing persistence and stability in community composition and diversity throughout several interglacial episodes until today, which is contradictory to the claim that recent coral reefs are especially sensitive to climate change. The present study deals with two Indo-Pacific regions that so far lacked quantitative data of fossil reef communities: tropical Vanuatu (Coral Sea) and subtropical Sinai, Egypt (northern Red Sea). In Vanuatu at least seven fossil reef terraces with ages between 5,000 and 400,000 years are preserved, of which four could be studied in more detail. A great variability was observed among terraces and especially among sub-environments within terraces. Reefs remained stable in terms of diversity throughout the Pleistocene and Holocene but it seems that the dominance of the coral genus Acropora is a fairly recent phenomenon in Vanuatu, because this genus does not play a large role in terraces older than 96,000 years (MIS 5c). In Egypt quantitative and binary data from the last interglacial episode (MIS 5e) were compared with data from the recent Red Sea and adjacent regions. These show a northward migration of coral taxa during the last MIS5e. This observation confirms earlier studies that demonstrated a range expansion of tropical reef communities towards higher latitudes, and supports studies that suggest the northern Red Sea and especially the Gulf of Aqaba as future refuge for corals during climate warming. These results indicate that coral reefs were able to cope with dramatic environmental changes in the absence of anthropogenic impact.

Collembola feed on a wide range of soil fungi, but possible interactions with other resources like algae, Cyanobacteria or seeds are poorly understood. The results of this thesis show that algae differ in their attractiveness and quality for Collembola and even euedaphic species benefit from them. Sympatric species of Collembola show differences in their food choice behaviour as well as in the utilisation of ingested food. The lipid analysis of consumers and their recourses assigned two new trophic biomarkers for Collembola reared on algal diets. Furthermore, this study provided proof that living algal cells can be detected in the faeces of Collembola. This confirms the assumption that Collembola contribute to the dispersal of algae. Simultaneously, fatty acid pattern of faecal pellets suggested that faeces are enriched with gut-associated microorganisms which were also deposited. This mechanism could have important influence on soil microbial communities.

Amphibienpopulationen sind weltweit bedroht. Für fundierte Entscheidungen im Naturschutz ist ein wissenschaftliches Hintergrundwissen notwendig. Eine wichtige Komponente ist die Verbreitung der Arten und die Gründe hierfür. Dies setzt auch Klarheit bezüglich des taxonomischen Status voraus. Vernachlässigte Regionen liegen meist in den Tropen. Um diese Lücke zu füllen, untersucht die vorliegende Arbeit die Makroökologie westafrikanischer Amphibien. Eine neue Art der Familie Phrynobatrachidae wird beschrieben. Anschließend werden die taxonomischen Unterschiede zweier Mitglieder der Familien der Hyperoliidae und der Arthroleptidae untersucht. Dies ebnet den Weg für die Makroökologie. Es wird analysiert, ob Westafrika eine einzigartige biogeographische Region ist. Die Untersuchung zeigen, dass Westafrika in der Tat einzigartig ist. Die Ähnlichkeiten innerhalb der Region sind größer als die innerhalb ähnlicher Habitate aus unterschiedlichen Regionen. Der Cross River ist die wichtigste Barriere. Mehrere geographische Zonierungen innerhalb Westafrikas werden entdeckt. Es wird untersucht, ob der Chytrid Pilz, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis, (Bd), ein wichtiger Faktor beim Rückgang der Amphibien Populationen, in West Afrika vorkommt. Bisher gibt es keinen positiven Nachweis westlich Nigerias. Dennoch sagen Modelle geeignete Habitate für Bd vorher. Die wahrscheinlichste Erklärung ist, dass die Dahomey Gap als natürliche Barriere die Ausbreitung von Bd verhindert. Als letztes werden die Nischen westafrikanischer Amphibien eruiert. Für die meisten Arten werden Nischenmodelle berechnet. Dies bestätigt bereits bekannte Gebiete hoher Alpha Diversität und zeigt bisher unbekannte Gebiete auf. Des Weiteren werden Erklärungen für unterschiedliche Verbreitungsgebietsgrößen gesucht. Generell wird die Nischenbreite hierfür verantwortlich gemacht. Die vorliegenden Daten lassen allerdings auch den Schluss zu, dass das Ausbreitungsvermögen das beobachtete Muster ebenfalls erklären kann. Amphibian populations are declining globally. For informed conservation decisions a sound scientific background is needed. One major component is species distribution and the underlying causes. This also requires clarity on the taxonomic status. Often neglected regions are located in the tropics. In order to fill this gap, the present thesis examines the macroecology of West African amphibians. A new species of the family Phrynobatrachidae is described. Afterwards, the taxonomic differences between morphologically similar members of the families Hyperoliidae and Arthroleptidae are discussed. Beside other studies, this sets the field for macroecology. It is tested whether West Africa is a unique biogeographic region. The similarity of amphibian assemblages from Sub-Saharan Africa is analysed and it is shown that West Africa contains unique assemblages. Similarities within the region are higher than similarities between habitats across different regions. The main barrier towards Central Africa is the Cross River. Several geographic divisions within West Africa are detected. It is examined whether the chytrid fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), one important factor for amphibian population declines in many other regions, occurs in West Africa. So far there is no positive record west of Nigeria. However, models predict that environmental suitability for Bd is high. The most plausible explanation for the absence is that the Dahomey Gap acted as a natural barrier against the spread of the Bd. Finally, the niches of West African amphibians are investigated. For most species environmental niche models are calculated. This confirms previously known areas of high alpha diversity and so far unknown species rich areas are detected. In a further study, explanations for differing range sizes are searched for. Niche breadth is commonly assumed to be the general cause. However, the analysed data also suggests that dispersal ability can also explain the observed pattern.

Durch die Zunahme der Biogasproduktion in den letzten Jahren hat sich auch die Menge von Gärprodukten, die verbleibenden Rückstände, entsprechend erhöht. In Deutschland fallen jährlich mehr als 50 Millionen Tonnen Gärprodukte an, die als Dünger verwendet werden. Damit werden Nährstoffe in den Kreislauf landwirtschaftlicher Ökosysteme zurück-geführt. Allerdings sind die agroökologischen Wirkungen noch nicht hinreichend erforscht. Aus diesem Grund wurden die folgenden Parameter untersucht: Einfluss von trockenen und flüssigen Gärprodukten auf dem Ertrag von drei ausgewählten Fruchtarten im Vergleich zu oder in Kombination mit Mineraldünger in On-Farm Versuchen; Wachstum, Entwicklung und Ertrag von zwei ausgewählten Fruchtarten im Vergleich zu Mineraldünger, Gülle und Stallmist in einer vollständig randomisierten Blockanlage; Einfluss auf ausgewählte Bodenlebewesen im Vergleich zu Mineraldünger, Gülle und Stallmist in einer vollständig randomisierten Blockanlage. Zusätzlich wurde die Mineralisierung von flüssigen und festen Gärprodukten im Vergleich zu Gülle und Stallmist untersucht, um Effekte der verschiedenen Düngestoffe auf die Humusbildung unter kontrollierten Bedingungen zu bestimmen. With the increase of biogas production in recent years, the amount of digestates or the remaining residues increased accordingly. Every year in Germany more than 50 million tons of digestates are produced, which are used as fertilizer. Thus nutrients return into the circulation of agricultural ecosystems. However, the agro-ecological effects have not been deeply researched until now. For this reason, the following parameters were quantified: the influence of dry and liquid fermentation products on the yield of three selected crops in comparison to or in combination with mineral-N-fertilizers in on-farm experiments; the growth, development and yield of two selected crops in comparison to mineral-N-fertilizer, liquid manure and farmyard manure in a randomized complete block design; selected soil organisms as compared to mineral-N-fertilizer, liquid manure and farmyard manure in a randomized complete block design. In addition, the mineralization of dry and wet digestates in comparison with liquid manure and farmyard manure was investigated in order to evaluate the effects of different fertilizers on the humus formation under controlled conditions.
