Attentional control theory (ACT) was proposed to account for trait anxiety's effects on cognitive performance. According to ACT, impaired processing efficiency in high anxiety is mediated through inefficient executive processes that are needed for effective attentional control. Here we review the central assumptions and predictions of ACT within the context of more recent empirical evidence from neuroimaging studies. We then attempt to provide an account of ACT within a framework of the relevant cognitive processes and their associated neural mechanisms and networks, particularly the fronto-parietal, cingular-opercula, and default mode networks. Future research directions, including whether a neuroscience-informed model of ACT can provide a platform for novel neurocognitive intervention for anxiety, are also discussed.

Aims The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of hop extracts with diverse β-acid concentrations on Streptococcus mutans biofilm formation. Methods and Results Ten different hop extracts, with α-acid concentrations similar to those found in commercial beer products and β-acid concentrations ranging from 2.6 to 8.1%, were added to distilled water to make standardized concentrations. S. mutans isolates were treated with hop extract dilutions varying from 1:2 to 1:256. The minimum inhibitory, minimum bactericidal and minimum biofilm inhibitory concentrations were determined and the optical density was evaluated. Live/dead staining confirmed the bactericidal effects. Biofilm formation of several strains of S. mutans was significantly inhibited by hop extract dilutions of 1:2, 1:4, 1:8, 1:16 and 1:32. Strong negative correlations were observed between α- and β-acid concentrations of the hop extracts and S. mutans total growth and biofilm formation. Conclusions The use of hop extracts prepared similarly to commercial beer decreased S. mutans biofilm formation. Significance and Impact of the Study The inclusion of hops in the commercial beer products may provide beneficial health effects. Further studies are warranted to determine an effect in vivo on the development of dental caries.

Etiological beliefs of depression have differing impacts on motivation, hope, and treatment expectations. However, it is unclear where people are exposed to these beliefs.

Uncovering mechanisms that can help explain the experience and impact of anxiety in women is important for improving etiological models and treatments to meet the needs of unique individuals. An enlarged error-related negativity (ERN) - an electrophysiological marker of cognitive control-related error monitoring- represents one indicator of neural processes more strongly related to anxiety in women than men. In this study, we further examined this association in women by testing the moderating effect of hormonal contraceptive (HC) use on the relationship between worry - i.e., a transdiagnostic cognitive dimension of anxiety - and the ERN. Results revealed that HCs moderated the worry-ERN association. Specifically, we found a significant and large relationship between worry and enlarged ERN in women using HCs, which was smaller and nonsignificant in naturally cycling women (i.e., those not using HCs). These findings suggest that the interplay among HC use, error-related cognitive control, and worry represents a novel mechanism for better characterizing the expression and impact of worry in women.

[...] The aim of this paper is to study the precision and theoretical biases in the age determinations of halo stars adopting both asteroseismic and classic observational constraints. [...] We adopt the well-tested SCEPtER pipeline, covering evolutionary phases up to the red giant branch (RGB). The fitting grids contain stars with mass in the range of [0.7; 1.0] $M_{\odot}$ and metallicity [Fe/H] from -2.5 to -0.5. We investigate several scenarios characterised by different adopted observational uncertainties. We also assess the impact of systematic discrepancies between the recovery grid models and target stars by computing several synthetic grids of stellar models with perturbed input physics. In our reference scenario, we recover ages for stars in the main sequence (MS) or subgiant branch (SGB) with a typical 10\%--20\% precision, while we recover those of RGB stars with a precision of about 60\%. However, adopting tighter constraints on asteroseismic parameters, the age precision in RGB improved to 20\%, while few modifications occur in the other analysed evolutionary phases. A systematic discrepancies between grid models and target stars shows that a mismatch in the mixing-length parameter value leads to significant bias in the age estimations for MS stars (about 10\%), but this bias is smaller for SGB and RGB stars. Neglecting the microscopic diffusion effect in the recovery grid leads to a typical 40\% bias in age estimates for stars on the MS. Finally, we applied the technique to stars in globular clusters. We find a precision in age estimates of around 20\% for MS stars and up to 40\% for RGB stars, greater than those obtained with classical methods. We demonstrate the method on stars of the cluster M4, obtaining a cluster age of $11.9 \pm 1.5$ Gyr and a mass at the turn-of off $0.86 \pm 0.04$ $M_{\odot}$, which are in good agreement with literature results., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. Breast cancer diagnosis and treatment can lead to longer term cognitive and emotional vulnerability, making the ability to efficiently adapt to setbacks critical. Whilst cancer-related cognitive impairments (CRCI) are often reported amongst breast cancer survivors, investigation into the capacity to efficiently process errors is limited. The present study investigated the neurocognitive correlates of cognitive-control related performance monitoring, an important function influencing behavioural adjustment to mistakes. 62 participants (30 Breast Cancer Survivors, 32 Non-Cancer) completed a modified flanker task designed to challenge response inhibition as we measured neurocognitive indices of performance monitoring (ERN, the error-related negativity; CRN, the correct-response negativity; Pe, the error positivity). Findings indicated a blunted CRN and larger ∆ERN in the breast cancer survivors compared to the non-cancer group, in the absence of performance effects. This was followed by a larger Pe in the breast cancer survivors' group, indicating an exaggerated performance monitoring response. For women affected by breast cancer, findings suggest an early disrupted neural response to monitoring cognitive performance, followed by the requirement for more effortful processing in the conscious response to errors, indicating deficits in neurocognitive efficiency. These findings have important implications for developing cognitive rehabilitation programmes for breast cancer survivors affected by cognitive dysfunction to assist in the monitoring and adjustment of performance required to meet established goals in the face of adversity.

While angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) is successfully used to map the bulk and surface bands, it remains a challenge to explicitly resolve and pinpoint these topological features. Here we combine state-of-the-art photoemission theory and experiments over a wide range of excitation energies for the Weyl semimetals TaAs and TaP. Our results show that simple surface-band-counting schemes, proposed previously to identify nonzero Chern numbers, are ambiguous due to pronounced momentum-dependent spectral weight variations and the pronounced surface-bulk hybridization. Instead, our findings indicate that dichroic ARPES provides an improved approach to identify Fermi arcs but requires an accurate description of the photoelectron final state., Published by APS, College Park, Md.

Background We sought to determine the frequency of asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infections, the BNT162b2 mRNA COVID 19 vaccine-related symptoms, and the correlates of immunity in post-vaccination breakthrough infections in a prospective cohort of healthcare workers. Methods We have been conducting a single-center, observational cohort study of healthcare workers. 271 participants were enrolled since August 25, 2020. Testing for SARS-CoV-2 spike (S)-specific IgG antibodies is conducted using a microsphere-based multiplex immunoassay interpolated against an internal standard curve for binding antibody (bAb) units (BAU) and has been performed on serum samples collected at monthly visits between September 2020 to August of 2021, and quarterly since then. Neutralizing antibody titers against wild-type (WT) virus are determined by microneutralization assays and against Delta and Omicron variants by lentiviral pseudovirus neutralization assays. For the first 6 months, participants completed a symptoms questionnaire every day they had any symptoms. Results 12 participants were diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2, with at least mild symptoms. Of 206 participants evaluated for adverse effects after 1st and 2nd vaccine doses, no relationship was observed between vaccine-associated symptom scores and antibody titers 1 month after the 2nd dose. Longitudinal studies demonstrate that anti-S IgG bAbs decrease from a geometric mean (GM) of 1929 BAU/mL at 1 month post-vaccination to a GM of 442 BAU/mL at 6 months post-vaccination (P< 0.001, n=187), and that boosting increases S-specific IgG BAU. While only 5 of 39 participants had detectable anti-Omicron neutralizing activity 1 month after 2 vaccinations, booster vaccination resulted in detectable neutralizing activity for all participants. Conclusion Asymptomatic infection is likely rare, that there is no relationship between vaccine-associated symptom severity and antibody titers 1 month after the 2nd vaccination, and that booster results in better protection against the Omicron variant. Ongoing studies are evaluating serological and cellular immune responses immediately prior to 38 breakthrough infections in an attempt to identify immune correlates of protection and will be reported at the conference. In February 2020, during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, 232 evacuees from Wuhan, China, were placed under federal 14-day quarantine upon arrival at a US military base in San Diego, California. We describe the monitoring of evacuees and responders for symptoms of COVID-19, case and contact investigations, infection control procedures, and lessons learned to inform future quarantine protocols for evacuated people from a hot spot resulting from a novel pathogen. Thirteen (5.6%) evacuees had COVID-19-compatible symptoms and 2 (0.9%) had laboratory-confirmed SARS-CoV-2. Two case investigations identified 43 contacts; 3 (7.0%) contacts had symptoms but tested negative for SARS-CoV-2 infection. Daily symptom and temperature screening of evacuees and enacted infection control procedures resulted in rapid case identification and isolation and no detected secondary transmission among evacuees or responders. Lessons learned highlight the challenges associated with public health response to a novel pathogen and the evolution of mitigation strategies as knowledge of the pathogen evolves.

Single bouts of exercise have been observed to exhibit therapeutic benefits for reducing affective responses associated with anxiety. However, anxiety has also been found to relate to less efficient cognitive processing as well as a greater reliance on action monitoring processes. Given the extant body of evidence demonstrating that single bouts of exercise result in cognitive enhancements; the present investigation sought to determine the extent to which exercise might be effective at reducing these anxiety-related impairments in cognition. Using a randomized within-subjects crossover design in a sample of high-anxious and low-anxious college-aged adults, measures of inhibition, attention, and action monitoring were assessed before and after 20-min of either aerobic exercise or a cognitively engaging control condition during two separate, counterbalanced sessions. Findings from this investigation revealed that both high anxious and low anxious individuals exhibited enhancements in behavioral indices of performance on an inhibitory control task with faster and more accurate responses following 20 min of moderate intensity aerobic exercise. Additionally, both high anxious and low anxious individuals demonstrated exercise induced enhancements in the allocation of attentional resources (as indexed by P3 amplitude) as well as action monitoring (as indexed by ERN amplitude). Accordingly, these findings provide evidence consistent with broad-base claims regarding the benefits of exercise, suggesting that both high and low anxious individuals appear to incur cognitive benefits.

OBJECTIVES We aimed to describe characteristics and operative outcomes from a multicenter cohort of infants who underwent repair of anomalous left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery. We also aimed to identify factors associated with major adverse cardiovascular events following anomalous left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery repair. DESIGN Retrospective chart review. SETTING Twenty-one tertiary-care referral centers. PATIENTS Infants less than 365 days old who underwent anomalous left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery repair. INTERVENTIONS None. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS Major adverse cardiovascular events were defined as the occurrence of postoperative extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, left ventricular assist device, heart transplantation, or operative mortality. Factors independently associated with major adverse cardiovascular events were identified using multivariable logistic regression analysis. We reviewed 177 infants (< 365 d old) who underwent anomalous left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery repair between January 2009 and March 2018. Major adverse cardiovascular events occurred in 36 patients (20%). Twenty-nine patients (16%) received extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, 14 (8%) received cardiopulmonary resuscitation, four (2%) underwent left ventricular assist device placement, two (1%) underwent heart transplantation, and six (3.4%) suffered operative mortality. In multivariable analysis, preoperative inotropic support (odds ratio, 3.5; 95% CI, 1.4-8.5), cardiopulmonary bypass duration greater than 150 minutes (odds ratio, 6.9 min; 95% CI, 2.9-16.7 min), and preoperative creatinine greater than 0.3 mg/dL (odds ratio, 2.4 mg/dL; 95% CI, 1.1-5.6 mg/dL) were independently associated with major adverse cardiovascular events. In patients with preoperative left ventricular end-diastolic diameter measurements available (n = 116), left ventricular end-diastolic diameter z score greater than 6 was also independently associated with major adverse cardiovascular events (odds ratio, 7.6; 95% CI, 2.0-28.6). CONCLUSIONS In this contemporary multicenter analysis, one in five children who underwent surgical repair of anomalous left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery experienced major adverse cardiovascular events. Preoperative characteristics such as inotropic support, creatinine, and left ventricular end-diastolic diameter z score should be considered when planning for potential postoperative complications.

Extant research indicates that worry is associated with reduced working memory. It remains unclear, however, what mechanisms contribute to impaired performance in worriers. Critically, dopamine in the prefrontal cortex heavily influences the stability of mental representations during working memory tasks, yet no research has probed its role in associations between worry and working memory. To address this gap, the current study was designed to examine the moderating role of dopamine on the association between worry and working memory, using the catechol-o-methyltransferase (COMT) gene as a proxy for basal levels of dopamine. Across four assessments, we examined within- and between-person variation in worry and its interactive effects with COMT to predict working memory performance. Within-person variation in worry interacted with COMT to predict accuracy, such that higher worry across time predicted less accuracy for homozygous Val carriers but not Met carriers. Our findings demonstrate that basal dopamine plays an important role in how increases in worry across time for an individual negatively impact working memory performance.

Anxiety has been studied using EEG/ERP approaches for many years, and substantive effects have been observed across the frequency spectrum. This chapter introduces the reader to the wide variety of work that has been done examining associations between anxiety and oscillatory measures. It focuses particularly on the nature of the relationship between anxiety and oscillatory metrics reflecting motivational/emotional and cognitive control dynamics involved in balancing bottom-up and top-down influences on behavior. The chapter discusses these findings in the context of cognitive, affective, and motivational models of anxiety. Furthermore, it covers the approaches to indexing the processes relevant to those models.

A putative biomarker of anxiety risk, the startle response is typically enhanced by negative compared to neutral emotion modulation in adults, but remains understudied in children. To determine the extent to which neutral, negative, and positively valenced emotional conditions modulate startle response in early life, a child-friendly film paradigm was used to vary emotion across these conditions during startle induction in sixty-four 4- to 7-year-old children. Association of emotion-modulated startle with parent-reported anxiety symptom severity and child behavioral inhibition, a risk factor for anxiety problems, were assessed. Analyses revealed no difference in startle magnitude during negative compared to neutral film clips. By contrast, startle during both negative and neutral conditions was greater than startle during the positive condition. Larger startle magnitude during the neutral condition associated with higher levels of child behavioral inhibition (BI). These results are consistent with possible immaturity of startle response in young children, and suggest that startle amplitude in more emotionally ambiguous, neutral conditions could serve as an early biomarker for anxiety risk.

OBJECTIVES: To examine pain and spirituality, demographic/clinical factors associated with pain and spirituality, the contribution of spirituality to experiences pain over time, and how pain and spirituality relate to engagement with a caregiver-delivered intervention. SAMPLE & SETTING: Women with advanced breast cancer (n=256) enrolled in a home-based randomized controlled trial of foot reflexology. METHODS & VARIABLES: Secondary analyses were conducted with baseline and post-intervention data (including reflexology and control groups). Stepwise model building, linear mixed effects modeling and negative binomial regression were employed. Research indicates that a subtle shift in language—silently referring to oneself using one’s own name and non–first-person-singular pronouns (i.e., distanced self-talk)—promotes emotion regulation. Yet it remains unclear whether the efficacy of distanced self-talk depends on the intensity of the negative experience reflected on and whether the benefits extend to emotionally vulnerable individuals. Two high-powered experiments addressed these issues. Distanced as opposed to immersed self-talk reduced emotional reactivity when people reflected on negative experiences that varied in their emotional intensity. These findings held when participants focused on future and past autobiographical events and when they scored high on individual difference measures of emotional vulnerability. The results also generalized across various types of negative events. These findings illuminate the functionality of language for allowing people to regulate their emotions when reflecting on negative experiences across the spectrum of emotional intensity and highlight the need for future research to examine the clinical implications of this technique.

the present study aims to understand how nursing professionals develop their care activities in face of the victim of recurrent acute myocardial infarction in the discharge process from the specialized intensive care unit. It is a research with a qualitative approach anchored in the methodological precepts of Convergent Care Research (PCA), articulating intervention and assistance, divided into two complementary phases, with five professionals working in the coronary intensive care unit of a hospital in the south of Mato Grosso . The data were collected through interviews with the use of a semi-structured script prepared by the authors. From the transcription of the interviews, categories of analysis emerged: “The development of technical knowledge and the execution of routine” and “Praxis and the need for advances in scientific nursing knowledge”. In addition to the assistance aspect, it was possible to understand, through the statements made explicit throughout the study, the absence of the professional nurse in the care process, since they were mentioned in a correlated way with the institutional routines and not as the main agents that propagate health care. care and guidance, especially at discharge from the unit. Thus, it is suggested the planning of the discharge process of the unit, with proper structuring capable of showing the interprofessionality between the care teams working in the unit, and in the context of nursing, its technical-scientific role.

Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) has improved patient outcomes; however, postoperative pain remains potentially severe. The objective of this study was to compare adjunct analgesic modalities for VATS, including paravertebral nerve blockade (PVB) and thoracic epidural anesthesia (TEA).Prospective, randomized trial.Large academic hospital, single institution.Adult patients undergoing VATS.Ultrasound-guided PVB catheter, ultrasound-guided single-injection PVB, or TEA.Postoperative visual analog scale pain scores (at rest and with knee flexion) and opioid usage were recorded. Pain scores (with movement) for the TEA group were lower than those for either PVB group at 24 hours (p ≤ 0.008) and for the PVB catheter group at 48 hours (p = 0.002). Opioid use in TEA group was lower than that for either PVB group at 24 and 48 hours (p0.001) and 72 hours (p0.05). Single-injection PVB was faster compared with PVB catheter placement (6 min v 12 min; p0.001) but similar to TEA (5 min). Patient satisfaction, nausea, sedation, and 6-month postsurgical pain did not differ between groups.TEA led to lower pain scores and opioid requirement for VATS procedures compared with PVB techniques. Single-injection PVB was faster and equally as effective as PVB catheter, and it led to similar patient satisfaction as TEA; therefore, it should be considered in patients who are not ideal candidates for TEA.

This study aimed to analyze the scientific data related to the nursing team care in cases of attempted suicide in emergency rooms of Brazilian hospitals, from February 2009 to February 2019. This is an integrative review on which the research was done in October 2019, at the LILACS, BDENF and SciELO databases through a combination of key words. A total of 574 articles were found (342 in LILACS, 113 in BDENF and 119 in SciELO), and 10 articles remained after the selection criteria. It was noted that the nursing staff feels unprepared to assist people who are in risk or who committed suicide. It is essential that the nursing staff have skills, knowledge and attitude towards these situations and are in constant professional training on the subject, thus contributing to a qualified assistance to patients with suicidal ideation.

Several recent studies suggest that placebos administered without deception (i.e., non-deceptive placebos) can help people manage a variety of highly distressing clinical disorders and nonclinical impairments. However, whether non-deceptive placebos represent genuine psychobiological effects is unknown. Here we address this issue by demonstrating across two experiments that during a highly arousing negative picture viewing task, non-deceptive placebos reduce both a self-report and neural measure of emotional distress, the late positive potential. These results show that non-deceptive placebo effects are not merely a product of response bias. Additionally, they provide insight into the neural time course of non-deceptive placebo effects on emotional distress and the psychological mechanisms that explain how they function., There is controversy about whether placebos without deception cause real psychobiological benefits. Here, the authors show that the positive effects of placebos without deception are more than response bias by providing evidence they can reduce self-report and neural measures of emotional distress.

Trauma is considered the third cause of death, being understood as a disease with endemic character in modern society is not only affecting the field of public health, but also, the socio-political society. According to the Advanced Trauma Life Support - ATLS, in emergencies, the first hour, called the "Golden Hour" (Golden hour), this is the moment in which more deaths occur. However, this is also the time for more if you can avoid them. This study aimed to understand how the pre-hospital care and hospital conducted both by the Fire Department of the west of SC, and by nurses from the emergency department of a regional hospital in the west of Santa Catarina, whereas the reception and customer service in the first hour of trauma ("golden hour") the polytraumatized patients. It is a qualitative, with data collection in the first half of October 2016, through semi structured interviews held with nine Militarized Firemen and four nurses to an emergency room, using as analytical method to Content Analysis of Bardin. In this study, it was observed that within 60 minutes that comprise the golden hour, first medical care which is since the so-called redemption until the reached the hospital, is done quickly and properly in most of the times, ignoring the factors that may delay the answer, as transit, incarceration and away from the occurrence, being the victim transported in a timely manner. This delay in care is often caused by delay of complementary examinations, delay of care by the medical team, deficiency of structure and overcrowding, these factors generate a cascade of delay, which consequently worsen the situation of the patient, increasing morbidity and mortality. You will notice that the golden hour is valuable in that it concerns the maintenance of life and consequences for patients. A quick and effective way can increase the chances of survival of same. It is known that the development of services of APH, whether public or private, culminate with the need for trained and qualified professionals that meet the specific needs of the nursing care during the pre-hospital care, with a view to prevention, protection and recovery to healthIt is of great importance to discuss more about the topic and conduct further studies to develop mechanisms that reduce this time-response thus lowering the risk of sequelae and mortality due to trauma.

A series of novel 2-thio-substituted-3H-phenothiazin-3-ones (6h-l) was effectively synthesized in one pot after optimization of the four-step synthesis. Treatment of a 2-alkylthio-1,4-benzoquinone (3a-l) made in situ and condensed with 1,2-aminothiophenol (5) followed by oxidation with NaIO4 produced the desired final targets. A four-step reaction sequence in which 1,4-benzoquinone (1) is first reacted with an alkylthiol (2a-l) in the presence of sodium periodate (NaIO4) and then treated with 2-aminothiophenol (5) followed by a second oxidation with sodium periodate was demonstrated to be effective in synthesizing 2-thio-substituted-3H-phenothiazin-3-ones (6a-g). The one-pot synthesis is an improvement of the stepwise synthesis of these 2-thio-substituted-3H-phenothiazin-3-one heterocycles since four steps are run in sequence and treated as one.

Beliefs about how much people can change their attributes – implicit theories – influence affective and cognitive responses to performance and subsequent motivation. Those who believe their attributes are fixed view setbacks as threatening and avoid challenging situations. In contrast, those who believe these attributes are malleable embrace challenges as opportunities to grow. Although implicit theories would seem to have important mental health implications, the research linking them with clinical applications is limited. To address this gap, we assessed how implicit theories of anxiety, emotion, intelligence, and personality related to various symptoms of anxiety and depression, emotion-regulation strategies, and hypothetical treatment choices (e.g., medication versus therapy) in two undergraduate samples. Across both samples, individuals who believed their attributes could change reported fewer mental health symptoms, greater use of cognitive reappraisal, and were more likely to choose individual therapy over medication. These findings suggest that implicit theories may play an important role in the nature and treatment of mental health problems.

Underdeveloped cognitive control (CC)-the capacity to flexibly adjust to changing environments-may predispose some children to early onset anxiety disorders and represents a promising intervention target. The current study established and pilot-tested "Camp Kidpower"-a novel group-based, interactive CC training intervention-and assessed its impacts on behavioral and neurophysiological indices of CC among preschool children with elevated anxiety symptoms.Forty-four anxious children (4-6 years) were enrolled in Camp Kidpower, delivered in four sessions over 10 days. Before and after camp, children's capacity for CC was measured using well-validated, non-trained behavioral tasks and error-related negativity (ERN). Child anxiety symptoms were measured by parent report on the Spence Preschool Anxiety Scale.Thirty-two children completed the study, as defined by completion of pre- and follow-up assessments and at least three camp sessions. From baseline to after camp, performance on behavioral tests of CC improved, ERN amplitude increased, and anxiety symptoms decreased.Results provide initial evidence that play-based cognitive training targeted to behavioral and brain markers of CC reduces anxiety in preschoolers.

A noticeable rise in global mobility has led to an increase in people identifying with more than one culture. This has been described as 'effects of globalisation' on the microlevel by some authors (Arnette, 2003; Fitzsimmons et al., 2017). The reasons for this are manifold and include: increase in migration for both economic and political reasons, increase in binational relationships and marriages, easier access to education abroad with international recognition of degrees, increased travel for both leisure and work, and not least, the increase in digitalisation. These developments facilitate private and professional interactions and relations with people across the globe. Building on previous work on multiculturalism, this paper aims to make a theoretical contribution to understand how daily behaviour is impacted by antecedents of multiculturality, ranging from monocultural to multicultural individuals. Specifically, we hypothesise multiculturality as relevant for behavioural outcomes, only to the extent of antecedent a) situational cues of in- vs outgroup cultural identity, b) degrees of stereotype activation and moderated by c) the individual need for cognitive closure. We postulate a theoretical model that explains the impact of various degrees of individual multiculturality on behaviours. With this, the paper contributes to understanding the psychological antecedents and underlying processes of people within an increasingly multicultural environment.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of different levels of nicotine and tobacco extract exposure on Streptococcus mutans biofilm formation and the inhibitory effect of the polyphenol epigallocatechin-3 gallate (EGCG) found in green tea. This study addressed the results of biofilm assays with EGCG and varying relative concentrations of nicotine and tobacco extract consistent with primary, secondary and tertiary levels of smoking exposure. Primary smoking exposure to nicotine has been demonstrated to significantly increase biofilm formation, while EGCG has been demonstrated to reduce S. mutans biofilm formation.Methods:S. mutans was treated with varying levels of nicotine or cigarette smoke condensate (CSC) concentrations (0–32 mg/ml and 0–2 mg/ml, respectively) in Tryptic Soy broth supplemented with 1% sucrose for different lengths of time simulating primary, secondary and tertiary smoking exposure with and without 0.25 mg/ml EGCG. The amount of total growth and biofilm formed was determined using a spectrophotometric crystal violet dye staining assay.Results: For both nicotine and CSC, primary exposure displayed overall significantly less growth compared to secondary exposure. For nicotine, secondary exposure demonstrated significantly greater growth than tertiary exposure levels. Overall, significantly greater total bacterial growth and biofilm formation in the presence of nicotine and CSC was observed in the absence of EGCG than in the presence of EGCG. However, biofilm growth was not significantly different among different concentrations of CSC.Conclusion: The results of this study help illustrate that nicotine-induced S. mutans biofilm formation is reduced by the presence of EGCG. This provides further evidence of the potential beneficial properties of polyphenols.

Purpose Status is a central aspect of teamwork relationships and successful collaboration in teams, both online and offline. Status group membership and status perception shape behavioural expectations and norm perceptions of what is appropriate, but despite their importance have been neglected in previous research. Status effects are of special interest in online collaboration, e.g. via email, where no immediate feedback or non-verbal/paraverbal communication and direct observation is possible. The purpose of this study is to address this gap in research. Design/methodology/approach An experimental scenario study with two different professional status groups (lecturers and students) tested status effects on causal attributions, intergroup bias and emotional and collaborative responses to perceived norm violations in emails. Findings Results overall showed three key findings: a “black-sheep-effect” with harsher negative attributions for same status members, more aggression and less cooperation towards lower status senders and stronger (negative) emotional reactions towards high status senders. Originality/value The findings are important for managing professional online communication because negative personal attributions, strong emotions and aggressive behaviours can increase team conflict, lead to mistakes and generally undermine performance.

Prior research indicates that psychological distance facilitates emotion regulation. Here, we propose that the ability to transcend one’s immersed perspective may be hidden in plain sight, within the very structure of language. We review evidence regarding two linguistic mechanisms, distanced self-talk and generic “you,” that promote emotion regulation by allowing speakers to shift from an immersed to a more distanced perspective through the words they use to reflect on the self (e.g., shifting from “I” to their own name or other non-first-person-singular pronouns). We conclude by suggesting that these linguistic shifts occur relatively seamlessly and thus may provide a less effortful route to emotion regulation.

Particular phases of the menstrual cycle may exacerbate affective symptoms for females with a diagnosed mental health disorder. However, there are mixed findings regarding whether affective symptoms change across the menstrual cycle in females without a clinical diagnosis. The window of vulnerability model proposes that natural increases in ovarian hormones in the mid-luteal phase of the menstrual cycle lead to systematic changes in brain networks associated with affective processing. Consequently, the model posits that females may experience stress more intensely and remember negative events more readily in the mid-luteal phase, increasing their risk for higher affective symptoms. Using a 35-day longitudinal study design, we tested the window of vulnerability model in a non-clinical sample. We tracked naturally cycling females' daily stress and three types of affective symptoms: anxious apprehension, anxious arousal, and anhedonic depression. Using multilevel modeling, we simultaneously modeled within- and between-person associations among stress and menstrual phase for each affective symptom. We found increased anhedonic depression in the mid-luteal phase but not anxious apprehension or anxious arousal. Moreover, we detected a positive association between within- and between-person stress and anxious apprehension and anhedonic depression, but not anxious arousal. These associations were not stronger in the mid-luteal phase. Overall, we provide weak evidence for a window of vulnerability for affective symptoms in the mid-luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. Our findings suggest that stress is a better predictor of fluctuations in affective symptoms than the menstrual cycle. Moreover, our findings highlight the importance of measuring multiple negative affective symptoms because they may be differentially related to stress and the menstrual cycle.

Electroencephalography (EEG) data collection can be challenging in preschoolers with anxiety who are often debilitated by fear of the unknown. Thus, we iteratively refined techniques for EEG collection in three cohorts of children with anxiety enrolled in our study of a novel intervention. Techniques involved directing child attention away from the EEG setup (Cohort 1, N = 18), open discussion of equipment and processes during setup (Cohort 2, N = 21), and a preparatory EEG-exposure session prior to data collection (Cohort 3, N = 6). Children (N = 45, 4-7 years) attempted a Time 1 EEG before intervention, and those who completed intervention (N = 28) were invited to a Time 2 EEG. The percentages who provided analyzable EEGs were assessed by cohort. Cohort 3 provided more Time 1 EEGs (83.3%) than Cohorts 1 or 2 (66.7% each), suggesting that the preparatory session supported first-time EEG collection. More children provided Time 2 EEG data across successive cohorts (Cohort 1: 66.7%, Cohort 2: 82%, Cohort 3: 100%), suggesting that more open communication facilitated repeat EEG collection. Ultimately, increased EEG exposure and child-friendly communication about procedures improved data acquisition in this sample of clinically anxious preschoolers. Detailed study procedures are shared to support future EEG research in young children with anxiety.

Significance Cooperation is key to well-functioning groups and societies. Rather than addressing high-cost cooperation involving giving money or time and effort, we examine social mindfulness—a form of interpersonal benevolence that requires basic perspective-taking and is aimed at leaving choice for others. Do societies differ in social mindfulness, and if so, does it matter? Here, we find not only considerable variation across 31 nations and regions but also an association between social mindfulness and countries’ performance on environmental protection. We conclude that something as small and concrete as interpersonal benevolence can be entwined with current and future issues of global importance., Humans are social animals, but not everyone will be mindful of others to the same extent. Individual differences have been found, but would social mindfulness also be shaped by one’s location in the world? Expecting cross-national differences to exist, we examined if and how social mindfulness differs across countries. At little to no material cost, social mindfulness typically entails small acts of attention or kindness. Even though fairly common, such low-cost cooperation has received little empirical attention. Measuring social mindfulness across 31 samples from industrialized countries and regions (n = 8,354), we found considerable variation. Among selected country-level variables, greater social mindfulness was most strongly associated with countries’ better general performance on environmental protection. Together, our findings contribute to the literature on prosociality by targeting the kind of everyday cooperation that is more focused on communicating benevolence than on providing material benefits.

Emotion regulation is critical for managing stress, but many regulatory strategies consume high levels of cognitive resources to implement, which are depleted under stress. This raises a conundrum: the tools we have to feel better may be ineffective when they are most needed. Recent event-related potential (ERP) research indicates that distanced self-talk (i.e., reflecting on one's experiences using non-first-person singular pronouns and one's name) reduces negative emotional reactivity without overtaxing cognitive resources. Here, we report the first direct replication of this work and extend it by examining how distanced self-talk compares to detached reappraisal, one of the most frequently studied regulatory techniques. Sixty-seven participants were randomly assigned to an emotion regulation picture task and instructed to reflect on the feelings they experienced in response to viewing negative emotional images using distanced self-talk or detached reappraisal while ERPs were measured. Directly replicating past findings, distanced self-talk led to a reduction in an affective arousal ERP, the late positive potential (LPP), without increasing stimulus preceding negativity (SPN), an ERP that reflects anticipatory and preparatory processing. These results further bolster support for distanced self-talk as a relatively effortless emotion regulation strategy. On the other hand, detached reappraisal was neither associated with the modulation of the LPP nor the SPN. Due to the failed replication of the reappraisal effect, a direct comparison between emotion regulation strategies was not conducted. Methodological limitations that may have contributed to the reappraisal failure and future directions for comparisons between emotion regulation strategies are discussed.

Purpose: To arrive at a consensus of best practices currently employed by sports neuropsychologists regarding specific criteria for determining concussion recovery. Methods: A survey was sent to 120 sports neuropsychologists listed in a public membership directory of the Sports Neuropsychology Society. The survey included demographic, Likert-style, and multiple-choice questions regarding the importance of given criteria in determining concussion recovery for youth (up to age 18) or adult (18+ years). Results: A sample of 22 participants (95% White, 59% male, 68% working with youth and adults, 45% seeing ≥50 patients yearly, 86% ≥10 years of experience) was obtained. The two highest rated criteria for youth and adults were: 1) symptom-free with exercise, and 2) back to work/school without symptoms or accommodations. The two lowest rated criteria were: 1) physician exam without concerns, and 2) opinions from another healthcare professional. Of those who treat adults, 71% reported 1 week symptom free is sufficient. For youth, 63% rated ≥1 week, 31% rated 2–3 weeks, and 6% rated ≥1 month is preferred. Conclusions: Most respondents have worked with youth and adult athletes for at least 10 years. Responses were mostly consistent regarding importance of the various surveyed criteria. There may be a tendency to wait for longer symptom-free periods for youth. Interestingly, the opinions of another health care professional or physician were less important than all other criteria in the survey. The two most important criteria appear to be resolution of symptoms during physical exertion and return to functional activities without symptoms or accommodations.

Despite a growing literature supporting the salutary effects of mindfulness meditation on emotion regulation, the underlying mechanisms linking neural and subjective changes occurring during the actual practice of meditation with emotion regulatory effects observed after meditation remains virtually unexplored. The current study sought to address this gap in knowledge by testing the hypothesis that adoption of internally-directed focused attention, indexed by increased alpha and theta spectral power, during brief open monitoring (OM) mindfulness meditation predicts reduced emotional reactivity, as measured by the late positive potential (LPP). Results revealed that the OM meditation did not produce demonstrable differences in alpha and theta power but did increase self-reported sleepiness relative to controls. Follow-up analyses showed that sleepiness uniquely moderated the effect of meditation on the LPP, such that less sleepiness during meditation, but not the control audio, corresponded to smaller LPPs to negative images. Change in theta, but not alpha power, between meditation and rest was positively correlated with the LPP even after controlling for sleepiness. Although the primary hypothesis was unsupported, the findings demonstrate that phenomenological and neural changes occurring during OM meditation may modulate its subsequent “off-the-cushion” effects on emotional reactivity.

INTRODUCTION: Previous studies have suggested that elevated neutrophils, monocytes, and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) may be associated with poor outcomes in intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). We sought to determine if white blood cell (WBC) types were independently associated with poor outcome in ICH in a large cohort. METHODS: We performed a retrospective study of primary ICH at two academic centers. Cases were identified via ICD-9 code and verified via physician review. We included only those patients with WBC types obtained within 24 hours of ICH onset. RESULTS: We identified 593 patients with primary ICH and WBC differentials in the first 24 hours. Background Literature describing morbidity and mortality after truncus arteriosus repair is predominated by single-center reports. We created and analyzed a multicenter dataset to identify risk factors for late mortality and right ventricle-to-pulmonary artery (RV-PA) conduit reintervention for this patient population. Methods We retrospectively collected data on children who underwent repair of truncus arteriosus without concomitant arch obstruction at 15 centers between 2009 and 2016. Cox regression survival analysis was conducted to determine risk factors for late mortality, defined as death occurring after hospital discharge and greater than 30 days after operation. Probability of any RV-PA conduit reintervention was analyzed over time using Fine-Gray modeling. Results We reviewed 216 patients with median follow-up of 2.9 years (range, 0.1 to 8.8). Operative mortality occurred in 15 patients (7%). Of the 201 survivors there were 14 (7%) late deaths. DiGeorge syndrome (hazard ratio [HR], 5.4; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.6 to 17.8) and need for postoperative tracheostomy (HR, 5.9; 95% CI, 1.8 to 19.4) were identified as independent risk factors for late mortality. At least one RV-PA conduit catheterization or surgical reintervention was performed in 109 patients (median time to reintervention, 23 months; range, 0.3 to 93). Risk factors for reintervention included use of pulmonary or aortic homografts versus Contegra (Medtronic, Inc, Minneapolis, MN) bovine jugular vein conduits (HR, 1.9; 95% CI, 1.2 to 3.1) and smaller conduit size (HR per mm/m2, 1.05; 95% CI, 1.03 to 1.08). Conclusions In a multicenter dataset DiGeorge syndrome and need for tracheostomy postoperatively were found to be independent risk factors for late mortality after repair of truncus arteriosus, whereas risk of conduit reintervention was independently influenced by both initial conduit type and size.

Mindfulness is frequently associated with improved attention. However, the nature of the relationship between mindfulness and executive attention, a core function of the attentional system, is surprisingly unclear. Studies employing behavioral measures of executive attention have been equivocal. Although neuroscientific studies have yielded more consistent findings, reporting functional and structural changes in executive attention brain regions, the observed changes in brain activity have not been linked to behavioral performance. The current study aimed to fill these gaps in the literature by examining the extent to which trait mindfulness related to behavioral and neurophysiological (indexed by the stimulus-locked P3) measures of executive attention. Results revealed that higher trait mindfulness was related to less flanker interference on accuracy and reaction time, consistent with enhanced executive attention. Critically, mediational analyses showed that the P3 accounted for the relationship between trait mindfulness and executive attention performance, elucidating a neural mechanism through which mindfulness enhances executive attention.
