1. COVID-19 impact on the decision process of the Italian Medicine Agency: a quantitative assessment

Abstract: Background: Since the COVID-19 pandemic has placed more attention on drugs’ approval process and the importance of rapid decision-making in the healthcare sector, it is crucial to assess how time to market (TTM) of drugs varied. Objective: To estimate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on TTM of drugs in Italy. Methods: An IQVIA database was used to retrieve information on drugs that obtained positive opinion from the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use between January 2015 and December 2021. The available observations were divided into three groups (Pre COVID, Partially COVID, and Fully COVID) according to the timing of their negotiation process. Differences in average TTM among the three groups were analyzed in three steps: (1) descriptive statistics; (2) univariate analysis; (3) multivariate analysis, using a matching estimator. Results: A total of 363 unique combinations of molecule and indication met the inclusion criteria: 174 in the Pre COVID group, 69 in the Partially COVID group, and 123 in the Fully COVID group. Descriptive statistics and univariate analysis found a statistically significant difference in TTM among the three periods, with average TTM increasing during the pandemic (+136 days, p = 0.00) and then decreasing afterward (−23 days, p = 0.09). In the matching analysis, results for the Partially COVID period were confirmed (+108 days, p = 0.00) while results for the Fully COVID period lost significance but maintained a negative sign. Conclusions: The results suggest that after an adjustment phase in the Partially COVID period, a return to the status quo was reached.

Abstract: Fraud is a social phenomenon, and fraudsters often collaborate with other fraudsters, taking on different roles. The challenge for insurance companies is to implement claim assessment and improve fraud detection accuracy. We developed an investigative system based on bipartite networks, highlighting the relationships between subjects and accidents or vehicles and accidents. We formalize filtering rules through probability models and test specific methods to assess the existence of communities in extensive networks and propose new alert metrics for suspicious structures. We apply the methodology to a real database-the Italian Antifraud Integrated Archive-and compare the results to out-of-sample fraud scams under investigation by the judicial authorities.

Abstract: Next generation telescopes, like Euclid, Rubin/LSST, and Roman, will open new windows on the Universe, allowing us to infer physical properties for tens of millions of galaxies. Machine learning methods are increasingly becoming the most efficient tools to handle this enormous amount of data, because they are often faster and more accurate than traditional methods. We investigate how well redshifts, stellar masses, and star-formation rates (SFR) can be measured with deep learning algorithms for observed galaxies within data mimicking the Euclid and Rubin/LSST surveys. We find that Deep Learning Neural Networks and Convolutional Neutral Networks (CNN), which are dependent on the parameter space of the training sample, perform well in measuring the properties of these galaxies and have a better accuracy than methods based on spectral energy distribution fitting. CNNs allow the processing of multi-band magnitudes together with $H_{\scriptscriptstyle\rm E}$-band images. We find that the estimates of stellar masses improve with the use of an image, but those of redshift and SFR do not. Our best results are deriving i) the redshift within a normalised error of less than 0.15 for 99.9$\%$ of the galaxies with S/N>3 in the $H_{\scriptscriptstyle\rm E}$-band; ii) the stellar mass within a factor of two ($\sim0.3 \rm dex$) for 99.5$\%$ of the considered galaxies; iii) the SFR within a factor of two ($\sim0.3 \rm dex$) for $\sim$70$\%$ of the sample. We discuss the implications of our work for application to surveys as well as how measurements of these galaxy parameters can be improved with deep learning., accepted for publication in MNRAS, 21 pages, 22 figures, 6 tables

Abstract: Cosmological constraints from key probes of the Euclid imaging survey rely critically on the accurate determination of the true redshift distributions, $n(z)$, of tomographic redshift bins. We determine whether the mean redshift, $$, of ten Euclid tomographic redshift bins can be calibrated to the Euclid target uncertainties of $\sigma()$ is measured in each tomographic redshift bin to an accuracy of order 0.01 or better. By measuring the clustering redshifts on subsets of the full Flagship area, we construct scaling relations that allow us to extrapolate the method performance to larger sky areas than are currently available in the mock. For the full expected Euclid, BOSS, and DESI overlap region of approximately 6000 deg$^{2}$, the uncertainties attainable by clustering redshifts exceeds the Euclid requirement by at least a factor of three for both $n(z)$ models considered, although systematic biases limit the accuracy. Clustering redshifts are an extremely effective method for redshift calibration for Euclid if the sources of systematic biases can be determined and removed, or calibrated-out with sufficiently realistic simulations. Abstract: Chronic migraine is a burdensome disease presenting with episodic pain and several symptoms that may persist even among headache attacks. Multisensory integration is modified in migraine, as assessed by the level of the perception of sound-induced flash illusions, a simple paradigm reflecting changes in cortical excitability which reveals to be altered in migraineurs. OnabotulinumtoxinA is an effective preventive therapy for chronic migraineurs, reducing peripheral and central sensitization, and may influence cortical excitability. Patients affected by chronic migraine who started onabotulinumtoxinA preventive therapy were included. Clinical effects (headache diaries and migraine related questionnaires) were assessed at the beginning of the therapy and after 12 weeks. Contextually, patients underwent the evaluation of multisensory perception by means of the sound-induced flash illusions. OnabotulinumtoxinA showed effectiveness both in migraine prevention and in reducing headache burden. Even one session of therapy was able to restore, at least partially, multisensory processing, as shown by patients’ susceptibility to the sound-induced flash illusion. OnabotulinumtoxinA could influence migraineurs cortical excitability concurrently to the beneficial effects in headache prevention.

Luego de haber procesado en el software SPSS.25 los datos recabados para contrastar la hipótesis general de este estudio, se tuvo una rho de correlación de Spearman positiva alta de 0.869 y un p-valor de 0.000 estableciéndonos el rechazo de la misma, es decir que, existe una relación directa y significativa entre hábitos de higiene personal con el rendimiento académico de los estudiantes de Educación Primaria del 3er Grado “A” en el área de Personal Social en la IE. Abstract: Background: The COVID-19 pandemic spread across the globe, including across the Mediterranean basin. This region presents diversity in economy, culture, and societal affairs. We attempted to evaluate the impact of COVID-19 on the population and on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), our aim being to aid in the development of COVID-19 national plans. Methods: Epidemiological data was obtained from ‘Our World in Data’ databases (January 2020 – July 2021). Case, mortality, and vaccination incidence comparisons were made across neighbouring countries. The SDG index, universal health coverage (UHC) and health workforce targets were collected for each country. Correlations between SDG targets and COVID-19 outcomes were analysed. Results: Similarities in morbidity and mortality outcomes were present across neighbouring countries, with a bidirectional relationship between cumulative fully vaccinated population and infectivity fatality rates. Positive relationships were present between SDG indexes, UHC and health workforces and COVID-19 cases, deaths, and vaccinations. Conclusion: At prima face, high-income countries seem to have sustained worse morbidity and mortality outcomes, despite having had better UHC and a greater health workforce in the pre-COVID-19 era however, one must also consider that factors such as health-seeking behaviour and underdiagnosis may have influenced this. Cross-border infectivity was, however, evident. Pan-Mediterranean action must therefore be taken to ensure COVID-19 transmissibility and mortality are reduced across borders, while ensuring an equitable health outcome across populations. Abstract: Patent foramen ovale (PFO) is associated with perioperative stroke in noncardiac surgery. The magnitude of this association was assessed in a systematic review and meta-analysis.Electronic databases were searched up to June 2022 for studies assessing the association between patent foramen ovale and perioperative stroke in adult patients undergoing noncardiac surgery. The primary analysis was limited to studies reporting effect estimates adjusted for significant clinical confounders. We calculated the adjusted odds ratio (aOR) and 95% confidence interval (CI).We included nine retrospective and two prospective observational studies, including 21 257 082 patients. The presence of a patent foramen ovale was independently associated with stroke at 30 days after surgery (aOR=6.68 [95% CI: 3.51-12.73]; P0.001) and at longest follow-up available (aOR=7.36 [95% CI: 3.56-15.21]; P0.001). The odds of stroke at 30 days varied according to surgical specialty: neurosurgery (aOR=4.52 [95% CI: 3.17-6.43]), vascular surgery (aOR=7.15 [95% CI: 2.52-20.22]), thoracic surgery (aOR=10.64 [95% CI: 5.97-18.98]), orthopaedic surgery (aOR=11.85 [95% CI: 5.38-26.08]), general surgery (aOR=14.40 [95% CI: 10.88-19.06]), and genitourinary surgery (aOR=17.28 [95% CI: 10.36-28.84]).The presence of a patent foramen ovale is associated with a large and consistent increase in odds of stroke across all explored surgical settings. Prospective trials should further explore this association by systematically assessing patent foramen ovale and stroke prevalence and identifying a specific population at risk. This is crucial for the elaboration of prevention plans and may improve perioperative outcomes.

Abstract: In 2020 and 2021, the eleventh and twelfth seasons of excavations at the Late Bronze Age city of Hala Sultan Tekke were carried out in the cemetery of Area A. Based on indications provided by a large-scale magnetometer survey, two tombs exposed by intensive farming were located, Tombs RR and SS. The excavation of Tomb RR, which had started in 2018, was concluded. The total minimum number (MNI) of skeletons in this tomb, of which most were incomplete and disarticulated, is estimated at 137. In addition to clay figurines, seals and scarabs, objects of ivory, as well as jewellery of gold, silver, bronze, faience and carnelian, the inhumations are associated with more than 100 intact or complete ceramic vessels, many of them imported from the Mycenaean, Minoan, Hittite and Levantine spheres of culture. The pottery indicates a LC II(A/)B–C1 date of the inhumations, i.e., covering the 14th and the beginning of the 13th centuries BC. The excavations of the adjacent Tomb SS began in 2020 and has been concluded in May 2022. It contained a minimum of eleven inhumations, most of them (almost) complete and articulated, and large deposits of Cypriot and imported pottery, in total over 300 vessels mainly from the LC (I–)IIB, i.e., from the 16th/15th to mainly the 14th centuries BC. These contexts not only offer an insight into the complex Late Cypriot mortuary practices and funerary rituals but also reflect the urban élites with far-reaching inter-cultural connections.

Abstract: Mucous membrane pemphigoid (MMP) with anti-laminin 332 autoantibodies may be associated with malignancies, however, current serological assays have considerable limitations. At present, no commercial test for anti-laminin 332 antibodies is available, restricting the diagnosis to specialized laboratories worldwide. Biochip immunofluorescence microscopy has shown promising results in selected cohorts of laminin 332-MMP patients. Objectives: To detect anti-laminin 332 antibodies by biochip immunofluorescence microscopy in a real-life cohort of MMP patients and compare the results with those from traditional immunoblotting. Sera were obtained from 31 patients with MMP, 28 with bullous pemphigoid, five with pemphigus vulgaris, five with paraneoplastic pemphigus, five with linear IgA bullous dermatosis, and 10 controls, and analysed by biochip immunofluorescence using human cells expressing laminin 332. Immunoblotting was performed using purified laminin 332. MMP involved the oral mucosa in 65%, ocular mucosa in 9%, oral and ocular mucosae extensively in 13% as well as other mucosae in 13% of patients. Concomitant cutaneous involvement was reported in 35% of patients. Three MMP patients had an underlying malignancy. Anti-laminin 332 antibodies were detected in 2/31 (6%) cases by both methods. Based on immunoblotting, both laminin 332-positive sera reacted with α3 chain (in one case also with β3 chain). Both patients with anti-laminin 332 antibodies had extensive mucosal involvement and only one had cancer. Anti-laminin 332 antibodies were not detected in control groups. Biochip immunofluorescence is an appropriate technique to detect anti-laminin 332 antibodies which should be tested in patients with MMP.

Abstract: The Complete Calibration of the Color-Redshift Relation survey (C3R2) is a spectroscopic programme designed to empirically calibrate the galaxy color-redshift relation to the Euclid depth (I_E=24.5), a key ingredient for the success of Stage IV dark energy projects based on weak lensing cosmology. A spectroscopic calibration sample as representative as possible of the galaxies in the Euclid weak lensing sample is being collected, selecting galaxies from a self-organizing map (SOM) representation of the galaxy color space. Here, we present the results of a near-infrared H- and K-bands spectroscopic campaign carried out using the LUCI instruments at the LBT. 27. The local elections of 2021. Voting in the large cities

Abstract: The 2021 round of Italian local elections involved a total of 1,339 municipalities. However, the attention of political leaders and the media was almost entirely focused on the competitions in the five largest cities (Rome, Milan, Naples, Turin and Bologna) which were seen as a national political test. The media placed the greatest emphasis on suggestions that the results were a surprising victory for the centre left, marking an important shift in the electoral balance of power between the parties. This article documents the extent of this ‘victory’, examines what was responsible for it and considers its possible effects on politics at the national level. The analysis is based on a new dataset created by the Cattaneo Institute which allows a spatial analysis of voting within each city for all elections over a period of more than twenty years. This allows us to examine not only voting trends over time, but also how votes have been distributed in the different areas of each city with their different levels of socio-economic well-being. In doing so, the article contributes to the literature on the spatial divergence of voting behaviour by showing that the increasing divergence between larger/urban and smaller/rural centres, and that between central and peripheral (more disadvantaged) areas within large cities, cannot be linked to the same explanatory factors, as their timing is different.

Abstract: Slope movements represent a class of phenomena, which can display a great variety of styles, sizes and displacement rates. Some are extremely rapid, short-lived and highly destructive; others are extremely slow and apparently endless. This paper describes an extremely slow soil slope deformation process that is probably active since thousands of years and will certainly go on for many years to come. The results of in-depth investigations carried out after the 1980 Irpinia-Basilicata earthquake integrated by satellite images covering the time interval 1992–2013 have provided a global and consistent framework that allows to draw a reliable scenario about the effects of the geological processes that are active in the area on slope deformation mechanisms.

Abstract: The cluster headache is a primary headache characterized by attacks of unilateral pain associated with ipsilateral cranial autonomic features. These attacks recur in clusters during the years alternating with periods of complete remission, and their onset is often during the night. This annual and nocturnal periodicity hides a strong and mysterious link among CH, sleep, chronobiology and circadian rhythm. Behind this relationship, there may be the influence of genetic components or of anatomical structures such as the hypothalamus, which are both involved in regulating the biological clock and contributing even to the periodicity of cluster headaches. The bidirectional relationship manifests itself also with the presence of sleep disturbances in patients affected by cluster headaches. What if the key to studying the physiopathology of such disease could rely on the mechanisms of chronobiology? The purpose of this review is to analyze this link in order to interpret the pathophysiology of cluster headaches and the possible therapeutic implications.

Abstract: O presente trabalho apresenta de forma clara e concisa o modelamento e simulação de campos de deformação obtidos em treliças planas através de medidas de centralidade em refinamento de malha por nós influentes. É utilizado o método dos elementos finitos com algoritmo desenvolvido e programado em FORTRAN com representação gráfica para visualização dos resultados feita através do GNUPLOT. Comprara os resultados dos campos de deformações com os de deslocamentos nodais tradicionalmente calculados para elementos finitos de barras planas constituídos de dois nós de extremidades. Constata-se que através dos campos de deformação é possível determinar com maior acurácia os valores internos às treliças planas, possibilitando assim uma análise mais criteriosa quando ocorrem variações de materiais no mesmo componente estrutural, como é o caso do modelo de vigas de concreto armado cujo comportamento idealizado é o de uma treliça plana.

Abstract: Triage is key to effective management of major incidents, yet there is scarce evidence surrounding the optimal method of paediatric major incident triage (MIT). This study aimed to derive consensus on key components of paediatric MIT among healthcare professionals responsible for triage during paediatric major incidents.Two-round online Delphi consensus study delivered July 2021-October 2021, including participants from pre-hospital and hospital specialities responsible for triage during paediatric major incidents. A 5-point Likert scale was used to determine consensus, set a priori at 70%.111 clinicians completed both rounds; 13 of 17 statements reached consensus. Positive consensus was reached on rescue breaths in mechanisms associated with hypoxia or asphyxiation, mobility assessment as a crude discriminator and use of adult physiology for older children. Whilst positive consensus was reached on the benefits of a single MIT tool across all adult and paediatric age ranges, there was negative consensus in relation to clinical implementation.This Delphi study has established consensus among a large group of clinicians involved in the management of major incidents on several key elements of paediatric major incident triage. Further work is required to develop a triage tool that can be implemented based on emerging and ongoing research and which is acceptable to clinicians.

Abstract: The ancient, ongoing coevolutionary battle between bacteria and their viruses, bacteriophages, has given rise to sophisticated immune systems including restriction-modification and CRISPR-Cas. Many additional anti-phage systems have been identified using computational approaches based on genomic co-location within defence islands, but these screens may not be exhaustive. Here we developed an experimental selection scheme agnostic to genomic context to identify defence systems in 71 diverse E. coli strains. Our results unveil 21 conserved defence systems, none of which were previously detected as enriched in defence islands. Additionally, our work indicates that intact prophages and mobile genetic elements are primary reservoirs and distributors of defence systems in E. coli, with defence systems typically carried in specific locations or hotspots. These hotspots encode dozens of additional uncharacterized defence system candidates. Our findings reveal an extended landscape of antiviral immunity in E. coli and provide an approach for mapping defence systems in other species.

Abstract: We present HVNEA tool (HV Noise and Earthquake Automatic analysis), a software package to automatically compute the horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratios (HV) on continuous months-to-years recordings, including both earthquake and ambient noise vibration. It is designed for processing large data sets of seismic signals, for example, from long-term permanent or temporary stations belonging to monitoring networks, using free software and packages that are commonly adopted in the engineering–seismology community. HVNEA is in the form of Linux-Unix shell scripts and packaged in a Docker image to run the code in any environment. It is designed to automatically download data from the main international repositories or from a local archive. The main achievement consists of the average HV as a function of time and saved in ASCII format, along with attractive and readable graphic plots to easily inspect the results. The analysis highlights the variation of the HV over a long span of time. HVNEA software package can be of great interest for big data analysts and seismic network operators, with regard to the site characterization analysis and for studies based on temporal variability of HV ratios over time.

Abstract: The scarcity of bilingual psychiatrists, as well as appropriate mental health services for populations with limited English proficiency, has led to inequitable health outcomes. A fellowship program was developed, which draws from a clinical model staffed by bilingual (Spanish-English) professionals from racial-ethnic minority groups, to address access to care and the structural determinants of health. This new Hispanic Psychiatry Fellowship focuses on health inequality and racism in policy and leadership, clinical care for Spanish-speaking patients, cultural psychiatry, recovery, forensics, substance use, and education. This column describes the program's development, first 2 years of implementation, and feasibility indicators for use in creating similar programs.

La búsqueda de información sanitaria on line es una práctica que realizó el 67% de los españoles entre 16 y 74 años en 2020, según datos de la Oficina de Estadística de la Unión Europea – Eurostat. Un porcentaje de búsqueda que se sitúa por encima de la media europea y que permanece en crecimiento desde el año 2017 en que se situaba en el 57% de los españoles.

Abstract: Systemic mastocytosis (SM) is a myeloid neoplasm characterized by abnormal growth and accumulation of neoplastic mast cells in at least one extracutaneous site. Clinical presentation and course are variable, most patients are developing an indolent disease and some, an aggressive/leukemic form. Because of its rarity, most physicians are unfamiliar with this disease and do not readily diagnose it. In the present retrospective study, the authors describe 12 patients diagnosed with mast cell neoplasm. Cases were selected from three institutions from Campinas and São Paulo City, Brazil. Morphological features and diagnostic pitfalls are emphasized. Patients' age ranged from 15 to 81 years (mean 51.6 years). Male and female were affected similarly (1:1). Ten patients were classified as aggressive SM, one patient as SM with an associated acute promyelocytic leukemia with t(15;17), and one patient with mast cell sarcoma. The most common clinical findings included anemia (9 patients), thrombocytopenia (3 patients), and skin lesions (3 patients). Bone marrow was involved in 11 patients at diagnosis, followed by skin (5 patients). Five morphological patterns were present: mast cell aggregates (5), plasmacytoid (4), monocytoid (2), spindle cell (2), and epithelioid/pleomorphic (1); two patients showed two histological patterns. In all cases, neoplastic cells were positive for CD117/C-KIT. C-KIT D816V mutation was present in four patients, C-KIT K509I in two, and del(7q22) in one; in five cases no mutational status was available. Despite limited resources, basically morphology and a restricted immunohistochemical panel, it is possible to diagnose mast cell neoplasm. Of note, the pathologist should recognize the different morphological variants of the disease and include adequate markers when requesting immunohistochemical studies.

Abstract: An abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a degenerative pathology that affects the infrarenal segment of the aorta, leading to its progressive dilatation and eventually rupture. The infrarenal segment is involved in 80% of the aortic aneurisms, and represents alone 30% of all aneurysms. The natural history of the disease is characterized by the progressive increase of the aortic diameter associated with proportionally higher risk of rupture, particularly for cases with diameter greater than 5.5 cm. In case of rupture the mortality rate is very high, independently from the endovascular or surgical treatment. The most important risk factors are older age, smoking, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and family history of AAA. The most frequent form is “atherosclerotic”, but infectious, collagen disease-related, immune dysregulation-related, and post-traumatic AAA have also been described. Albeit multiple pathogenetic hypotheses have been proposed, the role of metallo-proteinases in the degeneration of the aortic wall seem to play a central role. Early detection of AAA is crucial for the identification and treatment before the onset of potentially life-threatening complications. Moreover, the individual risk stratification is fundamental for the clinical management and follow-up. The growing knowledge about the pathophysiology of AAA has the potential to lead to significant translational ad- vances. The challenge for the next years is to employ bioinformatic and genetic models, also based on artificial intel- ligence and machine learning approach, to develop novel screening methods and to stratify individuals at higher-risk or in the early stages of AAA.

Abstract: Enhancing Streptomyces cellulase production by supplying lignocellulose biomasses has been poorly investigated so far. In this research the biosynthesis of Streptomyces roseochromogenes ATCC13400 cellulases was increased for the first time by addition of a cellulose fraction (2.5 g·L−1) to the growth medium, isolated from the marine origin Posidonia oceanica sea balls, generally called egagropili.. In shake flasks the cellulase production increased of 4.3 folds, compared to the control, up to 268 U·L−1 in 72 h, with a productivity of 3.7 U·L−1·h−1, while in batch it was further enhanced up to 347 U·L−1 in 45 h with a doubled productivity of 7.7 U·L−1·h−1 A downstream protocol was set up by coupling two ultrafiltration steps on 10 and 3 kDa membranes to recover the enzymes from the supernatant. A pool of three cellulases, having molecular weights between 115 and 47 kDa, was recovered. The optimal conditions for their enzymatic activity were 60 °C and pH 5.0, and they showed CMCase, FPase and β-glucosidase action. In conclusion, S. roseochromogenes might be considered a new cell factory for cellulase biotechnological production that might be enhanced by using the cellulose from egagropili, a well-known marine origin plant waste, as the substrate.

Abstract: Cystoseira sensu lato marine forests, which are among the most productive and diverse systems in rocky intertidal and subtidal habitats of the Mediterranean Sea, are experiencing a widespread decline throughout the basin due to increasing human pressures. Yet it is still unclear whether Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) may represent effective tools for conservation of these important habitat formers and their associated assemblages. Here, we compared the biomass of intertidal stands of Ericaria amentacea (C. Agardh) Molinari and Guiry and their understory assemblages between the no-take zone and control sites in two Mediterranean MPAs. We did not find evidence supporting a significant effect of full protection in increasing the biomass of E. amentacea stands and associated assemblages, except for macroalgae of the understory in one of the investigated MPAs, raising concerns on the potential effectiveness of MPAs in mitigating human impacts on these marine forests. Such findings call for major efforts to implement long-term monitoring programs of protected Cystoseira s.l. forests in order to inform an adaptive management of conservation measures within MPAs and eventually to set active interventions of restoration.

Abstract: Euclid's photometric galaxy cluster survey has the potential to be a very competitive cosmological probe. The main cosmological probe with observations of clusters is their number count, within which the halo mass function (HMF) is a key theoretical quantity. We present a new calibration of the analytic HMF, at the level of accuracy and precision required for the uncertainty in this quantity to be subdominant with respect to other sources of uncertainty in recovering cosmological parameters from Euclid cluster counts. Our model is calibrated against a suite of N-body simulations using a Bayesian approach taking into account systematic errors arising from numerical effects in the simulation. First, we test the convergence of HMF predictions from different N-body codes, by using initial conditions generated with different orders of Lagrangian Perturbation theory, and adopting different simulation box sizes and mass resolution. Then, we quantify the effect of using different halo-finder algorithms, and how the resulting differences propagate to the cosmological constraints. In order to trace the violation of universality in the HMF, we also analyse simulations based on initial conditions characterised by scale-free power spectra with different spectral indexes, assuming both Einstein--de Sitter and standard $Λ$CDM expansion histories. Based on these results, we construct a fitting function for the HMF that we demonstrate to be sub-percent accurate in reproducing results from 9 different variants of the $Λ$CDM model including massive neutrinos cosmologies. The calibration systematic uncertainty is largely sub-dominant with respect to the expected precision of future mass-observation relations; with the only notable exception of the effect due to the halo finder, that could lead to biased cosmological inference., 25 pages, 21 figures, 5 tables, 3 appendixes; v2 matches published version

Abstract: The urban plan of Palermo (Sicily, Italy) has evolved throughout Punic, Roman, Byzantine, Arab, and Norman ages until it stabilized within the borders that correspond to the current historic center. During the 2012 to 2013 excavation campaign, new remains of the Arab settlement, directly implanted above the structures of the Roman age, were found. The materials investigated in this study derived from the so-called Survey No 3, which consists of a rock cavity of subcylindrical shape covered with calcarenite blocks: it was probably used to dispose of garbage during the Arabic age and its content, derived from daily activities, included grape seeds, scales and bones of fish, small animal bones, and charcoals. Radiocarbon dating confirmed the medieval origin of this site. The composition of the bacterial community was characterized through a culture-dependent and a culture-independent approach. Culturable bacteria were isolated under aerobic and anaerobic conditions and the total bacterial community was characterized through metagenomic sequencing. Bacterial isolates were tested for the production of compounds with antibiotic activity: a Streptomyces strain, whose genome was sequenced, was of particular interest because of its inhibitory activity, which was due to the Type I polyketide aureothin. Moreover, all strains were tested for the production of secreted proteases, with those belonging to the genus Nocardioides having the most active enzymes. Finally, protocols commonly used for ancient DNA studies were applied to evaluate the antiquity of isolated bacterial strains. Altogether these results show how paleomicrobiology might represent an innovative and unexplored source of novel biodiversity and new biotechnological tools. IMPORTANCE One of the goals of paleomicrobiology is the characterization of the microbial community present in archaeological sites. These analyses can usually provide valuable information about past events, such as occurrence of human and animal infectious diseases, ancient human activities, and environmental changes. However, in this work, investigations about the composition of the bacterial community of an ancient soil sample (harvested in Palermo, Italy) were carried out aiming to screen ancient culturable strains with biotechnological potential, such as the ability to produce bioactive molecules and secreted hydrolytic enzymes. Besides showing the biotechnological relevance of paleomicrobiology, this work reports a case of germination of putatively ancient bacterial spores recovered from soil rather than extreme environments. Moreover, in the case of spore-forming species, these results raise questions about the accuracy of techniques usually applied to estimate antiquity of DNA, as they could lead to its underestimation.

Abstract: The recent invasion of Callinectes sapidus in the Lesina Lagoon has raised great concern about its potential impacts on the ecosystem and on local fisheries. The effects of the blue crab presence on the receiving ecosystem were evaluated from both a donor-side perspective, through the application of emergy analysis, and a user-side perspective, by means of interviews to the local fishermen. While emergy analysis showed that C. sapidus brings to an increase of both natural capital and ecosystem functions values, results from interviews highlighted that the major problem caused by the presence of the blue crab in the lagoon concerned the local economy. As the first quantitative assessment of the ecological and economic impact of C. sapidus in invaded habitats, the present investigation provided original and useful information for a comprehensive risk assessment of the species in European waters and in Mediterranean Sea.

48. Ideological polarization, policy continuity: back to the majoritarian principle?

Abstract: This introduction to the Italian Politics 2023 special issue gives an overview of the main events characterizing Italian politics during a year of large-scale policy reforms, presidential and parliamentary elections, and the unexpected Russian invasion of Ukraine. The authors pose three questions concerning Italian politics during the year gone by. First, from an institutional viewpoint, they ask whether the revival of majoritarianism as a principle of government formation represents the prelude to a return to enduring party-system bipolarity. Second, from an electoral and public policy perspective, they ask whether the formation of a government led by what many perceive as a radical right party betokens the start of a correspondingly radical shift in Italian public policy. Third, from an international relations perspective, they ask about the extent to which the Meloni government’s attitude to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and more generally to Italy’s position on the world stage and in international affairs, is likely to differ from that adopted by Draghi. The chapter elaborates on the three questions by tracing how the events of 2022 generated much more continuity than expected.

Abstract: Laser interferometry enables to remotely measure microscopical length changes of deployed telecommunication cables originating from earthquakes. Long range and compatibility with data traffic make it unique to the exploration of remote regions, as well as highly-populated areas where optical networks are pervasive, and its large-scale implementation is attractive for both Earth scientists and telecom operators. However, validation and modeling of its response and sensitivity are still at an early stage and suffer from lack of statistically-significant event catalogs and limited availability of co-located seismometers. We implemented laser interferometry on a land-based telecommunication cable and analyzed 1.5 years of continuous acquisition, with successful detections of events in a broad range of magnitudes, including very weak ones. By comparing fiber and seismometer recordings we determined relations between a cable's detection probability and the magnitude and distance of events, and showed that spectral analysis of recorded data allows considerations on the earthquake dynamics. Our results reveal that quantitative analysis is possible for this sensing technique and support the interpretation of data from the growing amount of interferometric deployments. We anticipate the high integration and scalability of laser interferometry into existing telecommunication grids to be useful for the daily seismicity monitoring, in perspective exploitable for civilian protection use.

Abstract: The future Euclid space satellite mission will offer an invaluable opportunity to constrain modifications to general relativity at cosmic scales. We focus on modified gravity models characterised, at linear scales, by a scale-independent growth of perturbations while featuring different testable types of derivative screening mechanisms at smaller nonlinear scales. We consider 3 specific models, namely Jordan-Brans-Dicke (JBD), the normal branch of Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati (nDGP) gravity and $k$-mouflage (KM) gravity. We provide forecasts from spectroscopic and photometric primary probes by Euclid on the cosmological parameters and the extra parameters of the models, respectively, $\omega_{\rm BD}$, $\Omega_{\rm rc}$ and $\epsilon_{2,0}$, which quantify the deviations from general relativity. This analysis will improve our knowledge of the cosmology of these modified gravity models. The forecasts analysis employs the Fisher matrix method applied to weak lensing (WL); photometric galaxy clustering (GC$_{ph}$); spectroscopic galaxy clustering (GC$_{sp}$) and the cross-correlation (XC) between GC$_{ph}$ and WL. For the Euclid survey specifications we define three scenarios, characterised by different cuts in $\ell$ and $k$, to assess the constraining power of nonlinear scales. For each model we consider two fiducial values for the corresponding model parameter. In an optimistic setting at 68.3\% confidence interval, with Euclid alone we find the following percentage relative errors: for $\log_{10}{\omega_{\rm BD}}$, with a fiducial value of $\omega_{\rm BD}=800$, 35% using GC$_{sp}$ alone, 3.6% using GC$_{ph}$+WL+XC and 3.3% using GC$_{ph}$+WL+XC+GC$_{sp}$; for $\log_{10}{\Omega_{\rm rc}}$, with a fiducial value of $\Omega_{\rm rc}=0.25$, we find respectively 90%, 20% and 17%; finally, for $\epsilon_{2,0}=-0.04$ respectively 5%, 0.15% and 0.14%.
