DEHUMANIZATION AND DEPOLITICIZATION The paper takes up the issue of “depoliticization” through dehumanization. The starting point is the belief that phenomena of “politicization” and “political” are relatively well recognized in scientific literature, however the problem of depoliticization have not yet been adequately explored. The concept of depoliticization refers to the conditions, criteria, and mechanisms that are key to reducing or depriving a given phenomenon of its political status. Depoliticization does not mean (or at least does not have to mean) an effective removal of the phenomenon from the political sphere, but rather circumstances or actions whose political impact is not obvious. The article focuses on the issue of depoliticization through dehumanization, and more specifically, on how denial of full humanness of groups allows to reduce their status as a political subject, and thus to recognize their claims or interests as not proper or not adequate to political debate. Procesy integracji, dezintegracji i reintegracji stanowią centralny problem dla procesualnego myślenia o polityce. Mają one wiele okoliczności i determinantów, wśród których miejsce szczególne zajmują kwestie związane z humanizowaniem lub dehumanizowaniem przeciwników. Artykuł podejmuje kwestie relacji między dehumanizacją i rehumanizacją a dezintegracją i reintegracją w kontekście dzikich wojen i z uwzględnieniem ich konsekwencji dla zjawisk polityzacji i depolityzacji. The processes of integration, disintegration and reintegration are central to thinking about politics in processual terms. Among many circumstances and determinants, a special place is occupied by issues related to the humanization or dehumanization of opponents. The article deals with the relationship between dehumanization-rehumanization and disintegration-reintegration in the context of savage wars and taking into account their consequences for the phenomena of politicization and depoliticization. more...

Physical Space and Mental Barriers in Russian Emigrants’ Experience ("The Mushroom Picker" by Zinovyi Zynyck) Taking into account the novel "The Mushroom Picker" there are a lot of kinds of the word “frontier”. Their meaning depends on a question: what we would like to express using them. Not only does the Russian author write about space borders between countries but he considers mental barriers as well. In his opinion, the latter ones are drastically more dangerous because they often lead to arguments and even wars between nations which have no knowledge and understanding of different cultures. The main character of the novel shows the reader both Soviet and English reality. The capital cities of these countries – Moscow and London – are presented critically. The citizens of both countries do not trust each other, and do not even try to know anything about different conditions in which they live. The protagonists are proud only of their own culture and history, and do not respect other nations. There are not any spiritual values, friendship and agreement among people. In this way "The Mushroom Picker" turned to be very pessimistic. more...

Osią rozważań uczyniono kategorie dehumanizacji, waloryzacji roli społecznej i self-adwokatury, które w odniesieniu do obrazu osób z niepełnosprawnościami przedstawianego w filmach, w znacznej części nagrodzonych Oscarami, opisują ewolucję tego obrazu. more...

Przedmiotem artykułu jest prawna ocena wypowiedzi dehumanizujących ludzi w prenatalnej fazie rozwoju formułowanych w kontekście postulatów legalizacji aborcji w Polce. Kolejność przedstawionych zagadnień jest następująca: 1) charakterystyka fenomenu dehumanizacji na podstawie dorobku nauk społecznych; 2) przywołanie przykładów wypowiedzi środowisk proaborcyjnych, które mogą być brane pod uwagę jako wypowiedzi dehumanizujące człowieka w prenatalnej fazie rozwoju; 3) dokonanie oceny prawnej przytoczonych wypowiedzi, w szczególności z perspektywy Konstytucji Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej. This article focuses on the legal assessment of statements dehumanizing people in the pre-natal phase of development in the context of the postulates of legalizing abortion in Poland. The order of the presented issues is as follows: 1) characteristics of the phenomenon of dehumanization, based on the achievements of social sciences; 2) recalling examples of statements of pro-abortion groups that can be considered dehumanizing in the pre-natal phase; 3) legal assessment of these statements, in particular from the perspective of the Constitution of the Republic of Poland. The aim of the article is to investigate some of the possible sources of inspiration for Orwell’s concept of the artificial language called Newspeak, which, in his novel Nineteen Eighty-Four, is shown as an effective tool of enslavement and thought control in the hands of a totalitarian state. The author discusses, in this context, the putative links between Newspeak and really existing artificial languages, first of all Esperanto, and also between Orwell’s notion of “doublethink”, which is an important feature of the totalitarian mentality, and Czesław Miłosz’s notion of “ketman”, developed in his book The Captive Mind. But the main emphasis is on the connection between Orwell’s book and the slightly earlier novel by C.S. Lewis, That Hideous Strength. It is well known that Orwell knew Lewis’s book and expressed his mixed feelings about it. There are many specific, though far from obvious, similarities between the two books, but what seems to have been particularly inspiring for Orwell was Lewis’s vision of a thoroughly degenerate language that is used for political manipulation rather than for communication. Celem artykułu jest zbadanie wybranych źródeł inspiracji, które mogły posłużyć G. Orwellowi do stworzenia koncepcji sztucznego języka zwanego Nowomową, który w powieści Rok 1984 ukazany jest jako skuteczne narzędzie zniewolenia i kontrolowania myśli w ręku totalitarnej władzy. Autor omawia w tym kontekście możliwe związki między Nowomową a rzeczywiście istniejącymi sztucznymi językami, takimi jak Esperanto. Wskazane są również podobieństwa i różnice między Orwellowską koncepcją „dwójmyślenia” a pojęciem „ketmanu” zdefiniowanym w książce Czesława Miłosza pt. Zniewolony umysł. Jednak główny nacisk położony jest na związki między powieścią Orwella a fantastyczno-naukową powieścią C.S. Lewisa pod tytułem Ta ohydna siła. Wiadomo, że Orwell książkę Lewisa znał i nawet ją zrecenzował. Istnieje wiele bardziej i mniej oczywistych podobieństw między tymi dwoma wybitnymi wizjami zdegenerowanego języka, który służy bardziej politycznej manipulacji niż wzajemnemu zrozumieniu. more...

Przedmiotem artykułu jest retoryka legitymująca tępienie szczurów w czasach realnego socjalizmu. Na podstawie badań materiałów propagandowych z lat 1945-1989 autorka udowadnia, że dyskurs deratyzacyjny tego okresu wykazuje analogie zarówno z „sanitarnymi” metaforami obecnymi w czystkach o charakterze etnicznym (antysemityzm), jak i z militarystyczno-obywatelską frazeologią towarzyszącą czystkom politycznym. Proponuje pojęcie czystki gatunkowej, którym określa program metodycznej eksterminacji zwierząt oparty na kryterium gatunkowym z towarzyszącą mu wyraźnie anihilacyjną frazeologią oraz silną mobilizacją społeczną. Jarzębowska examines the rhetoric used to legitimize the extermination of rats in the era of Socialist Realism. Propaganda materials on rat extermination from 1945 until 1989 reveal analogies with the ‘sanitary’ metaphors that appeared in the context of (anti-Semitic) ethnic cleansing as well as with the phraseology of political cleansing campaigns, which drew on military and civil discourses. Jarzębowska proposes the concept of species cleansing to describe the programme of this methodical extermination of animals. This programme was based on the criterion of the species; it clearly employed the phraseology of annihilation, and it was accompanied by a remarkable collective mobilization. more...

Osaczające nas zewsząd procedury i algorytmizacja działania, sprawia, że procesy myślowe, czy refleksyjność, zostają wyrugowane, promując bezwzględne posłuszeństwo i poddanie się logice cywilizacji numerycznej. Liczby uznajemy za wiarygodne, miarodajne, rzetelne, a dodatkowo pozbawione ludzkiej stronniczości i interpretacji. Choć głosi się wszem i wobec zwiększający się zakres wolności i autonomiczności jednostek, mamy do czynienia z procesem przeciwnym - zniewalania jednostek procedurami, kwantyfikatorami i władzą statystyki. Brak poddania się nim grozi utratą skuteczności, o którą wielu tak zabiega, skazując jednostki na bezrefleksyjny konformizm. Nie chodzi zatem o to, aby myśleć, wręcz przeciwnie - chodzi o to, aby nie myśleć, nawykowo wykonując proceduralne wytyczne zbiurokratyzowanej do granic możliwości, odhumanizowanej maszyny. Udziwnione i sztucznie wykreowane procedury, zbliżają nas raczej do działania robotów, niż obdarzonych sprawstwem, racjonalnych podmiotów. Wartość ma zatem nie ta wiedza, która odnosi się do procesów rozumienia świata i samego siebie, ale ta, która objaśnia nam procedury, łatwo domykając niedookreślone. Podmiotowość jednostki, jej rozumienie świata – także poprzez afekty – czy samoświadomość, nie może być zastąpiona przez najbardziej wyszukane procedury algorytmiczne, które długo jeszcze pozostaną bezradne w sferze ludzkiej aksjologii. Quantifi cation has become our fetish without which we can not imagine life in the modern world. We are increasingly positively evaluating typically human attributes, eff ectively replaced by technical, dehumanized, performance-oriented social machines. This paper examines the modern Kurdish literary narratives and their application to the potential reconciliation between Kurds and Turks. It argues that while the subtle forms of dehumanisation of the Kurds are still entrenched in the Turkish state policy and popular media production – hampering the peace process – Kurdish literary narratives might be helpful in changing the dominant image of the Kurds, humanising them, and stimulating the process of reconciliation. Moreover, they offer diverse perspectives which may assist reconciliation. The peace process in Turkey started in 2009, intensified in 2013, and collapsed in 2015. At the same time, Kurdish culture has not been fully recognised, and it did not become a meaningful factor in the process of ending military conflict and establishing dialogue. The author offers an interdisciplinary approach, focusing on Paul Ricœur’s reflection on reconciliation and forgiveness, the results of socio-psychological study on the subtle forms of dehumanisation, and the role of literature in reconciliation with regard to the imagined contact hypothesis. Celem artykułu jest analiza zjawiska dehumanizacji, rozumianej jako odmawianie jednostkom bądź grupom cech przynależnych gatunkowi ludzkiego, w okresie argentyńskiej dyktatury wojskowej 1976-1983. Zjawisko to omówione zostało na przykładzie funkcjonowania Szkoły Mechaników Marynarki Wojennej (Escuela de Mecánica de la Armada, ESMA) w Buenos Aires, która w okresie dyktatury służyła jako jedno z największych w Argentynie centrów przetrzymywania wrogów reżimu i podejrzewanych o działalność wywrotową. W pierwszej części artykułu podjęta została teoretyczna refleksja nad zjawiskiem dehumanizacji w psychologii społecznej. W drugiej części przedstawione zostały ideologiczne podstawy dehumanizowania wrogów reżimu w trakcie dyktatury, jak również konkretne strategie dehumanizacyjne. Trzecia część tekstu stanowi analizę funkcjonowania ESMA, stanowiąc przykład przeniesienia ideologiczno-dyskursywnej dehumanizacji na poziom praktyki politycznej. The aim of the article is to analyze the phenomenon of dehumanization, understood as denial of traits belonging to the human species during the 1976-1983 military dictatorship in Argentina. The phenomenon is discussed on the example of the Naval School of Mechanical Engineering (Escuela de Mecánica de la Armada, ESMA) in Buenos Aires - one of the largest secret detention centres during the dictatorship, where enemies of the regime and suspected subversives were kept. The first part of the article covers theoretical reflection on the phenomenon of dehumanization in social psychology. The second part presents the ideological grounds for dehumanization of the regime’s enemies, as well as specific dehumanization strategies. The purpose of this article is to draw attention to the infrahumanisation phenomenon of Otherness in the context of ableism. In the discussion, a reference is made to the concept of infrahumanisation, explaining what its essence and characteristic features are; ableism which is the discrimination form directed towards people with disabilities, attitudes (considering their three-dimensionality) and five forms of discrimination proposed by Stanislaw Kowalik’s classification. Both attitudes and individual forms of discrimination have been examined through the prism of infrahumanisation showing its close relationship and the prevailing relations between these issues. more...

Niniejszy artykuł prezentuje różne podejścia teoretyczne i metodologiczne we współczesnych badaniach nad antropomorfizacją, dehumanizacją i infrahumanizacją. W badaniach tych człowieczeństwo definiowane jest najczęściej na sposób esencjalistyczny, w kategorii uniwersalnego zestawu cech, których przypisywanie wiąże się z antropomorfizacją, odmawianie zaś z dehumanizacją. Przedstawiając wyniki dotychczasowych badań, w artykule ukazuje się pomijane w nich aspekty człowieczeństwa, a także alternatywne do esencjalistycznego, indywidualistyczne podejście do problematyki nadawania oraz odbierania różnym obiektom statusu człowieka. This article presents different theoretical and methodological approaches to current research on anthropomorphism, infrahumanization and dehumanization. In the majority of studies, humanness is defined in an essentialistic way, as a number of specific and universal traits, which are ascribed to anthropomorphized objects and denied to dehumanized people. Analyzing pros and cons of this approach and presenting the results of studies related to it, the article exposes additional aspects of humanness, which should be taken into account by future research. Książka składa się z czterech części. W pierwszej, zatytułowanej „Człowiek i metoda”, przedstawiamy rozumienie człowieka jako podmiotu przyjęte przez Kępińskiego na podstawie założeń ogólnej teorii systemów, podejście biologiczne i związaną z nimi teorię metabolizmu informacyjnego. Stanowi ono punkt wyjścia humanistycznego podejścia badawczego dotyczącego poznania drugiego człowieka. Podejście to opisujemy, wskazując na: teorię bezpośredniego poznawania cudzych stanów psychicznych, uznanie dialogu za paradygmat stosunku do drugiego człowieka oraz przyjęcie wewnętrznego, fenomenologicznego układu odniesienia. Część druga jest poświęcona wynikającemu z powyższego podejścia badawczego opisowi struktury świata fenomenologicznego. Zajmujemy się szczególnie takimi fenomenami, dotyczącymi struktury przeżyć, jak: „ja”, porządek czasowo-przestrzenny i wartościujący. Odwołując się do tych analiz, opiszemy fenomen indywidualności i tożsamości oraz wolność jako doświadczenie wolności. Część trzecia dotyczy miejsca człowieka w świecie, opisywanego z perspektywy etyczno-aksjologicznej. Dwa najważniejsze tutaj wątki to związki człowieka ze światem natury, ukazane głównie przez pryzmat zagadnienia moralności naturalnej oraz miejsce człowieka w cywilizacji technicznej, ukazane pod kątem płynących z niej zagrożeń prowadzących do dehumanizacji człowieka. Te rozważania przygotują nas do poszukiwania odpowiedzi na postawione w części czwartej pytanie o możliwość zła pod postacią dwudziestowiecznego ludobójstwa i istnienia obozów zagłady. Artykuł jest syntezą dotychczasowych badań psychologicznych nad zjawiskiem antropomorfizacji, ukazującą różne perspektywy spojrzenia na to zagadnienie, przyczyny antropomorfizacji oraz jej konsekwencje dla indywidualnego i społecznego funkcjonowania. Antropomorfizacja traktowana tu jest przede wszystkim jako wyraz nadania obiektowi znaczenia, prowadzący do wiary w posiadanie przez obiekt ludzkich atrybutów, co sprawia, że zabieg ten ma głęboki wydźwięk w poglądach i działaniach stosujących go osób. The following review is a synthesis of current studies concerning antrophomorphism, its antescendants and consequences for the individual and the society. Different perspectives and definitions of anthropomorphism are shown here, although the article emphasises anthropomorphism as anact of giving meaning to an object, connected with the belief that the object has human attributes This belief has a deeper effect on people’s opinions and acts concerning the objects, society and environment. more...

Futurism was an artistic movement, which can be concerned as a reaction to an experience of modernisation, a process that had a large influence on the shape of humans’ surroundings and, in the further perspective, on the human condition. The great city, masses that inhabit its area and the greatest technical invention of modernity: the machine, are the three apices of a triangle, which can be metaphorically used to describe the process of modernisation. All these three apices, marks of modern changes, have a great influence on the experience of space, which we find rendered in the works of Polish futurism. Hence, its artistic activity may be considered as an answer to the process of modernisation, in terms proposed by Richard Sheppard. I decided to focus on two aspects of futurist’s experience of space. The first one is connected with Henri Bergson’s utopian theory of the pure perception. The cognition of space can only be true when neither memories nor reflection interfere it, while the subject finds himself in the centre of the item being recognized. This kind of experience, which uses all senses of the subject’s body placed in a way that Bergson proposes, can be find in Anatol Stern’s poem Nagi człowiek w śródmieściu (A Naked Man In The City Centre). The second aspect of the experience of space is to be observed in Bruno Jasienski’s poems such as Miłość na aucie, Śnieg, Podróżniczki (Love in a car, Snow, Travellers), where scandalous, provocative eroticism indicates the sensual, bodycentred manner of experiencing the space. In fact, this type of experience can be treated as a pleasure in Lévinas’ terms due to it causes delight, which excludes the possibility to structurise a strong identity for the subject. The experience of space in futurist’s works becomes a pleasure with no further consequences for the subject’s interior. Its quality, which indicates the tendency to change the nature of experience into pleasure, points out the rule of pleasure, that is a major rule in nowadays culture. more...

Zdobycie przez Adolfa Hitlera władzy zostało nazwane przez Henry’ego Kissingera „jednym z największych nieszczęść w historii świata”. Były amerykański sekretarz stanu dodał, że gdyby nie przywódca nazistów, „zawalenie się domku z kart, jakim był stworzony w Wersalu porządek międzynarodowy, mogło przebiegać w sposób pokojowy, a co najmniej nie katastroficzny”. Stało się jednak inaczej: 30 stycznia 1933 r. Hitler odebrał z rąk sędziwego prezydenta Hindenburga nominację na urząd kanclerski, a 6 lat później naziści pod jego przywództwem rozpoczęli jeden z najkrwawszych konfliktów zbrojnych w historii ludzkości. Po zakończeniu wojny badacze nieprzerwanie zastanawiają się nad fenomenem popularności nazistów w społeczeństwie niemieckim. Jest to obszar badań, który od dziesiątek lat fascynuje adeptów wielu dziedzin nauki. Dotyczy to nie tylko historyków, ale również politologów, socjologów, psychologów, ekonomistów, antropologów czy religioznawców. Jednym z nich jest Paul Johnson, który stwierdził, że „świadomi tego, co się dzieje, byli wszyscy Niemcy. (...) wojna Hitlera z Żydami stała się przedsięwzięciem ogólnonarodowym (...). The article is an attempt to present the role of deep philosophical reflection in human life. It attempts to give an answer to the question for what a human being needs philosophy, and why it is particularly needed today. In the first part, the author shows the understanding of philosophy and the concrete understanding of a human being connected with it, which can be found in Boethius’s work De consolatione philosophiae. The human being, as a naturally philosophical being, asks about the ultimate aim and sense. Being an individual of rational nature, he or she constantly undertakes the effort of seeking for truth. In the second part, calling up the phenomenon of Macdonaldisation, the author shows in what way the contemporary human beings have lost their specific human vocation and deformed their own true, rational features. Living according to the ‘much, fast and cheap’ principle, humans stopped being ‘truth seekers’, and became ‘collectors of experiences’. The author concludes that the more the contemporary culture is bereft of reason, lackis rationality, is keen on efficiency, bustling, cherishes utility and technology, the greater is the need for deep philosophical reflection. It is the only way to save a human being, prevent it from being dehumanized, and build a true human community. Thus, philosophy restores the crucial dimension of sense for the human being. It brings back space for the contemplative life essential for the true human existence. For the human being to be what it really was, the search for truth and the selfless love of wisdom are absolutely fundamental and indispensable. more...

Artykuł stanowi próbę analizy sztuki Wielkiej Awangardy jako elitarnego (skierowanego do wąskiego grona odbiorców) doświadczenia estetycznego, którego pozytywnym zwieńczeniem jest świadoma rozkosz estetyczna. Analiza ta zostanie dokonana w perspektywie filozoficznych rozważań na temat sztuki awangardowej hiszpańskiego myśliciela José Ortegi y Gasseta. Przyjęta perspektywa badawcza pozwoli nie tylko na wskazanie głównych cech charakteryzujących i wyróżniających sztukę Wielkiej Awangardy, ale także na zarysowanie warunków intelektualistycznego zwrotu w sztuce europejskiej XX wieku. Zwrot ten sprzężony był z ideałem elitarności sztuki, wokół którego koncentrują się refleksje Ortegi y Gasseta pochodzące z wydanego w 1925 roku eseju pt. Dehumanizacja sztuki. The article consists of an analysis of the Great Avant - garde art as an exclusive (addressed to a narrow audience) aesthetic experience, which aims in conscious culmination of aesthetic pleasure. The analysis is presented in the perspective of philosophical reflections on avant-garde art of Spanish philosopher José Ortega y Gasset. The adopted research perspective allows to identify the main features characterizing and distinguishing the Great Avant-garde art, but also to scratch basic conditions of intellectualist revolution in European art at the beginning of the twentieth century. Artykuł poświęcony jest obecności jawnej dehumanizacji animalistycznej i mechanistycznej w polskim dyskursie politycznym na przykładzie spotów wybranych ugrupowań i partii politycznych w wyborach parlamentarnych 2015 roku. Rozważania oparte są na intensywnie rozwijanych w XXI wieku teoriach infrahumanizacji oraz dehumanizacji. Zgodnie z tą pierwszą, odczłowieczanie ma postać subtelną, jest powszechne, zachodzi w pewnym stopniu poza świadomością podmiotu i polega na odmowie innym emocji wtórnych, które są charakterystyczne dla ludzi. Przypisywane innym w procesie infrahumanizacji emocje pierwotne są właściwe także zwierzętom, stąd odczłowieczanie tego rodzaju odbywa się poprzez porównanie ze zwierzętami. Teoria dehumanizacji akceptuje to twierdzenie wyróżniając dehumanizację animalistyczną, rozszerzając pole badań o dehumanizację mechanistyczną, gdzie odczłowieczenia dokonuje się poprzez porównanie z maszynami. Obie formy dehumanizacji mogą mieć postać subtelną i jawną; obie także mają znaczne konsekwencje dla zjawisk społecznych, przede wszystkim usprawiedliwiają przemoc i zmniejszają chęć pomocy ofiarom. Pytaniem ważnym, w tym kontekście, wydaje się występowanie dwóch form dehumanizacji w walce politycznej, jak i strategie odczłowieczania wrogów stosowane przez poszczególnych aktorów. Przeprowadzona analiza uprawdopodabnia twierdzenie, że zarówno dehumanizacja animalistyczna, jak i dehumanizacja mechanistyczna są obecne w polskiej debacie politycznej. Uprawnia również do postawienia ostrożnego wniosku, że są one raczej narzędziami zdobywania władzy, aniżeli jej utrzymania. The article is devoted to the manifestation of animalistic and mechanistic dehumanization in the Polish political discourse and the analysis is based on the examples of advertising spots of selected political groups and parties during the 2015 parliamentary elections. The analysis pertains to the theories of infrahumanization and dehumanization, intensively developed in the 21st century. According to the former, dehumanization can take a subtle form, is ubiquitous, takes place, to some extent, beyond the consciousness of the subject, and consist in denying others the right to secondary emotions, which are characteristic for humans. Primary emotions, attributed to others in the process of infrahumanization, can also be found in animals, hence dehumanization of this kind is carried out by comparing people to animals. The theory of dehumanization accepts this claim by distinguishing animalistic dehumanization but it also expands the field of research to mechanical dehumanization, according to which dehumanization is done by comparing people to machines. Both forms of dehumanization can take a subtle or an open form; both can also have significant consequences for social phenomena, above all, they justify violence and reduce the desire to help the victims. An important question in this context seems to be about the existence of these two forms of dehumanization in the political struggle as well as about the strategies of dehumanization of enemies used by individual actors. The analysis suggests that both animalistic and mechanical dehumanization are present in the Polish political debate.
