1. Work–Life Balance of Faculty in Professional Physical Therapist Education: A Mixed-Methods Study.

Abstract

Introduction.: The purpose of this mixed-methods study was to explore perceptions of work–life balance (WLB) of full-time faculty in professional physical therapist (PT) education programs. Review of Literature.: Studies show that faculty are at risk of diminution of WLB and subsequent burnout due to job expectations and changing educational landscapes. Limited evidence exists to describe perceived WLB of faculty in professional PT education. Subjects.: Full-time faculty in professional PT education programs (n = 239) responded to an online survey and 16 participated in focus group discussions. Methods.: The Work/Nonwork Interference and Enhancement Survey (W/NW Scale), faculty characteristic prompts, and open-ended questions were disseminated electronically to all accredited professional PT education programs within the United States. Focus groups were conducted to further explore nuances of WLB. Frequencies and percentages were calculated for survey categorical variables with means and standard deviations for continuous variables. Differences in W/NW Scale and faculty characteristics were analyzed using independent-samples Mann–Whitney U tests. Open coding and an iterative process of thematic analysis was used to analyze the qualitative data. Results.: Medians for all W/NW Scale dimensions were between 2 and 3 out of 5. W/NW Scale dimension scores differed significantly in each of the faculty characteristics of gender, defined workload, and faculty job searching (Z = −2.399 to −3.517, P ≤.016). Qualitative data yielded 3 main themes: 1) implicit and explicit job duties ; 2) leadership ; and 3) individual boundaries. Ebb and flow of WLB emerged as an overarching theme. Discussion and Conclusion.: This study offers a portrayal of the lived experience of faculty regarding WLB. Results offer useful information about faculty demographics, work-related factors, and personal responsibilities. One limitation was that cultural, community, and religious demands were not explored. Findings may facilitate improved understanding of faculty WLB perceptions and can guide leadership to optimize the balance between faculty's paid work and personal life. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Introduction. The purpose of this study was to analyze and compare educational outcomes of Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) graduates before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Review of Literature. Reports show increased stress, anxiety, and burnout during the COVID-19 pandemic, which may have negatively affected academic performance. Historically, academic performance is predictive of National Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE) scores. Yet, there is little evidence analyzing student outcomes during the pandemic. Subjects. Doctor of Physical Therapy graduate records (N = 1,897) were retrospectively collected from a multicenter convenience sample consisting of 5 blended programs. Records were sampled from existing "prepandemic" graduates of Fall 2018-2019 (n = 988) and "pandemic" graduates of Fall 2021-2022 (n = 909). Methods. A causal comparative and correlational study design was used. Grade point average (GPA) and NPTE scores were collected. A general linear model examined differences between groups, and a multiple linear regression examined predictors of NPTE performance. Results. Grade point average was a significant predictor of NPTE score (r² = 0.56; P < .01) for the overall sample and for the prepandemic and pandemic cohorts (r² = 0.38, P < .01; r² = 0.45, P < .01, respectively). Grade point average was not significantly different between the groups (P = .09), nor did it significantly influence differences in NPTE scores (P = .13). Pandemic graduates displayed a significantly lower NPTE pass rate (85.1%) compared with prepandemic graduates (89.7%; P < .01). Pandemic graduates experienced higher rates of academic difficulty (20%; P < .01) and had a approximately 5 times higher likelihood of not passing the NPTE. Discussion and Conclusion. This is the first study to report on DPT graduate outcomes spanning the COVID-19 pandemic. Similar to previous studies, GPA remained the most significant predictor of NPTE scores. Pandemic graduates demonstrated significantly lower NPTE scores and higher rates of academic difficulty (GPA < 3.0). Continued monitoring of NPTE performance is warranted between prepandemic, pandemic, and postpandemic cohorts across modes of program delivery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cohort studies in adults with HIV showed that dolutegravir was associated with neuropsychiatric adverse events and sleep problems, yet data are scarce in children and adolescents. We aimed to evaluate neuropsychiatric manifestations in children and adolescents treated with dolutegravir-based treatment versus alternative antiretroviral therapy.

4. Brain-computer interface prototype to support upper limb rehabilitation processes in the human body

Abstract

The high potential for creating brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) and video games for upper limb rehabilitation has been demonstrated in recent years. In this work, we describe the implementation of a prototype BCI with feedback based on a virtual environment to control the lateral movement of a character by predicting the subject’s motor intention. The electroencephalographic signals were processed employing a Finite Impulse Response (FIR) filter, Common Spatial Patterns (CSP), and Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA). Also, a video game was used as a virtual environment, which was written in C# on the Unity3D platform. The test results showed that the prototype implemented based on electroencephalographic signal acquisition has the potential to take on real-time applications such as avatar control or assistive devices, obtaining a maximum control time of 65 s. In addition, it was noticed that the feedback in an interface plays a crucial role, since it helps the person not only to feel motivated, but also to learn how to have a more consistent motor intention and when little calibration data is recorded, the probability that the system makes erroneous predictions increases. These results demonstrate the usefulness of the development as support for people who require some treatment in the form of upper limb motor rehabilitation, and that the use of virtual environments, such as video games, can motivate such people during the rehabilitation processes.

5. Promoting Interprofessional Collaboration Among Pediatric Physical Therapy Students Through Remote Simulation.

Abstract

Interprofessional collaboration must be taught in healthcare curriculum to ready graduates for the clinic, however, limited evidence is available to guide pediatric physical therapy faculty in best practices. This quantitative retrospective pretest-posttest study examined collaborative competency attainment, satisfaction, and self-confidence of 84 Doctor of Physical Therapy students from four campuses of a private university. Students participated in a live, remote simulated learning experience and completed the Student Satisfaction and Self-Confidence in Learning scale and the Interprofessional Collaborative Competencies Attainment Survey--Revised. There was significant improvement in student collaborative competencies after the simulated learning experience and students were satisfied and confident in the learning experience regardless of demographics. Findings support implementation of a remote simulation for the purpose of interprofessional collaboration in pediatric physical therapy education and may relate to other fields. Future research may explore the influence of interdisciplinary, remote simulation interventions on student behavior in the clinic and patient outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Children with HIV-associated tuberculosis (TB) have few antiretroviral therapy (ART) options. We aimed to evaluate the safety and pharmacokinetics of dolutegravir twice-daily dosing in children receiving rifampicin for HIV-associated TB.

Safe and potent antiretroviral medications in child-friendly formulations are needed to treat young children living with HIV-1. We aimed to select dosing for a dispersible tablet formulation of dolutegravir that achieved pharmacokinetic exposures similar to those in adults, and was safe and well tolerated in young children.

17. High-Risk But Not Low-Risk HPV E2 Proteins Bind to the APC Activators Cdh1 and Cdc20 and Cause Genomic Instability

Abstract

Human papillomaviruses (HPVs) from the high-risk group are associated with cervicalcancer, in contrast to HPVs from the low-risk group which are associated with benignlesions. Here, we show that high-risk, but not low-risk HPV E2 proteins, promote amitotic block, often followed by metaphase-specific apoptosis, and which is independentof the viral oncogenes E6 and E7. High-risk HPV E2-expressing cells also showpolyploidy, chromosomal mis-segregation and centrosome amplification leading togenomic instability. We link these defects to a specific and unusually strong interactionbetween high-risk E2 and both Cdc20 and Cdh1, two activators of the AnaphasePromoting Complex (APC), abnormal localization of Cdh1, and accumulation of APCsubstrates like cyclin B, in vivo. The finding that high-risk, but not low-risk HPV E2proteins, induce genomic instability, raises the intriguing possibility that E2 proteinsplay a role in the oncogenic potential of high-risk papillomaviruses.

18. Regulation of Bovine Papillomavirus Replicative Helicase E1 by the Ubiquitin-Proteasome Pathway

Abstract

ABSTRACTPapillomaviruses maintain their genomes in a relatively constant copy number as stable extrachromosomal plasmids in the nuclei of dividing host cells. The viral initiator of replication, E1, is not detected in papillomavirus-infected cells. Here, we present evidence that E1 encoded by bovine papillomavirus type 1 is an unstable protein that is degraded through the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway. In a cell-free system derived from Xenopusegg extracts, E1 degradation is regulated by both cyclin E/Cdk2 binding and E1 replication activity. Free E1 is readily ubiquitinated and degraded by the proteasome, while it becomes resistant to this degradation pathway when bound to cyclin E/Cdk2 complexes before the start of DNA synthesis. This stabilization is reversed in a process involving E1-dependent replication activity. In transiently transfected cells, E1 is also polyubiquitinated and accumulates when proteasome activity is inhibited. Thus, the establishment and maintenance of a stable number of papillomavirus genomes in latently infected cells are in part a function of regulated ubiquitin-mediated degradation of E1.

19. Functional Interaction between the Bovine Papillomavirus Virus Type 1 Replicative Helicase E1 and Cyclin E-Cdk2

Abstract

ABSTRACTWe have found that the replicative helicase E1 of bovine papillomavirus type 1 (BPV-1) interacts with a key cell cycle regulator of S phase, the cyclin E-Cdk2 kinase. The E1 helicase, which interacts with cyclin E and not with Cdk2, presents the highest affinity for catalytically active kinase complexes. In addition, E1, cyclin E, and Cdk2 expressed in Xenopusegg extracts are quantitatively coimmunoprecipitated from crude extracts by either anti-Cdk2 or anti-E1 antibodies. E1 protein is also a substrate of the cyclin E-Cdk2 kinase in vitro. Using the viral components required for in vitro BPV-1 replication and free-membrane cytosol from Xenopuseggs, we show that efficient replication of BPV plasmids is dependent on the addition of E1-cyclin E-Cdk2 complexes. Thus, the BPV initiator of replication and cyclin E-Cdk2 are likely to function together as a protein complex which may be the key to the cell cycle regulation of papillomavirus replication.
