Technological solutions for emerging e-textiles are being sought to enable e-wear technology to be self-sustaining and lightweight. A rippling 1D carbon fiber capacitor design was made with commercial carbon threads as electrodes using simulated sweat solution as the electrolyte. This is particularly relevant for potential sports textile applications in which sweat could serve as an electrochemical energy source. An electrospun cellulose acetate fiber membrane and a commercially available felt were used as separators capable of soaking the electrolyte. These were tested in braided and woven electrode configurations, respectively. Functionalizing the carbon wires with polypyrrole (PPy) enhanced the surface area and significantly increased the specific capacity by approximately an order of magnitude (0.62 F/g). Cyclic voltammetry and charge–discharge tests confirmed the washability and durability of the devices for at least 1000 cycles.

A set of seven SNP markers was used to evaluate the genetic diversity of wild Portuguese hops in comparison with commercial cultivars. A collection of 110 wild genotypes and 33 cultivars was characterized by a high-resolution melting analysis of short amplicons targeting SNP loci. Most of the 143 genotypes (75%) could be differentiated. Phylogenetic analysis showed three main clusters, one included almost exclusively (98%) wild accessions, being the others constituted of both wild and commercial genotypes. The study of population genetic structure placed the accessions into three genetic units, being one exclusively of Portuguese genotypes. The study showed the great biodiversity of the Portuguese hop germplasm and the notable differences (FST= 0.163, p<0.00001) from commercial hops. Results support the usefulness of the use of these seven markers for hop discrimination, with the fast and high-throughput HRMA technique for allele calling and contribute to the affirmation of the high richness breeding potential of Portuguese wild hops.

The increasing demand for flexible electronic devices has risen due to the high interest in electronic textiles (e-textiles). Consequently, the urge to power e-textiles has sparked enormous interest in flexible energy storage devices. One-dimensional (1D) configuration supercapacitors are the most promising technology for textile applications, but often their production involves complex synthesis techniques and expensive materials. This work unveils the use of the novel electrospray deposition (ESD) technique for the deposition of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)–poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS). This deposition methodology on conductive carbon yarns creates flexible electrodes with a high surface area. The deposition conditions of PEDOT:PSS were optimized, and their influence on the electrochemical performance of a 1D symmetric supercapacitor with a cellulose-based gel as an electrolyte and a separator was evaluated. The tests herein reported show that these capacitors exhibited a high specific capacitance of 72 mF g–1, an excellent cyclability of more than 85% capacitance retention after 1500 cycles, and an outstanding capability of bending.

Commercial fruit flours were evaluated concerning: (i) the nutritional composition (proximate composition, total phenolic content, and minerals content), (ii) their contribution to estimated mineral daily intake, (iii) the bioaccessibility of essential minerals using the in vitro INFOGEST digestion method and (iv) the influence of their chemical composition on minerals bioaccessibility. The 20 samples analysed presented high variability concerning the content of dietary fibre (7.5 to 69.7 g/100 g), carbohydrates (4.1 to 74.9 g/100 g), protein (2.9 to 12.9 g/100 g), ash (1.0 to 7.0 g/100 g), lipids (1.0 to 8.1 g/100 g) and total phenolic content (2.9 to 41.0 mg GAE/g. The mineral content of fruit flours provides a great contribution to the daily mineral requirements (especially Mg, Fe, Mn and Cu) with a daily intake of 30 g and very low contribution to the daily requirements of Na (0–3%). Low bioaccessibility was observed for Ca (18.0%) and Fe (28.9%), while Mg was the most bioaccessible mineral (81.5%). Though, the bioaccessible fraction of Mg showed negative correlation with total dietary fibre content (r = − 0.77) and lipids (r = − 0.46).

This study investigates bioactive compounds in apple pomace (AP) obtained from Malus domesticavarieties Granny Smith and Cripps Pink, emphasizing its potential for developing high-added-value products from industrial surplus. Regarding its chemical characterization, AP stood out for its high concentration of dietary fibers (7.1g/100g fw), polyunsaturated fatty acids (linoleic and oleic acids), α-tocopherol (0.64 mg/100g fw), and phenolic compounds. Regarding these last, the profile obtained by HPLC-DAD-ESI/MS allowed the identification of 23 phenolic compounds, with higher concentrations of quercetin and flavonoids in pomace than whole apples. Moreover, concerning evaluating AP bioactivity through in vitromethods, the analyzed AP samples, with seeds and stems (APSS) and without (APA), exhibited enhanced antioxidant activity, particularly in the OxHLIA test, preserving erythrocyte integrity. Additionally, the pomace demonstrated significant antibacterial activity against Yersinia enterocolitica, Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli, with a minimum inhibitory concentration of 5 mg/mL. Finally, no cytotoxic or anti-inflammatory effects were observed, as GI50values exceeded 400 μg/mL (maximum tested concentration). These findings highlight apple pomace as a rich source of bioactive compounds, promoting its valorization in food safety and preservation while encouraging sustainable practices utilizing industrial bio-residues.

Background Olfactory dysfunction (OD)—including anosmia and hyposmia—is a common symptom of COVID-19. Previous studies have identified olfactory training (OT) as an important treatment for postinfectious OD; however, little is known about its benefits and optimizations after SARS-CoV-2 infection.Objective This study aimed to assess whether olfactory training performance can be optimized using more fragrances over a shorter period of time in patients with persistent OD after COVID-19. In addition, we determined the presence of other variables related to OD and treatment response in this population.Methods This multicenter randomized clinical trial recruited 80 patients with persistent OD and prior COVID-19 infection for less than 3 months. The patients were divided into 2 groups receiving either 4 or 8 essences over 4 weeks. Subjective assessments and the University of Pennsylvania Smell Identification Test (UPSIT) were performed before and after the treatment.Results Significant olfactory improvement was measured subjectively and using the UPSIT in both groups; however, no significant differences between the groups were observed. Additionally, the presence of olfactory fluctuations was associated with higher UPSIT scores.Conclusion These data suggest that training intensification by increasing the number of essences for 4 weeks does not show superiority over the classical method. Moreover, fluctuant olfaction seems to be related to a higher score on the UPSIT.

This study aimed to describe the clinical and laboratory findings of patients diagnosed with pleural tuberculosis at two hospitals in southern Brazil.

•Isotonic drink made with thermal water had suitable traits for this product type.•Due to apple juice and hibiscus, the isotonic was rich in phenolic compounds.•The isotonic drink also showed significant antioxidant activity.•It was chemically and microbiologically stable at 4°C and 25°C for 45 days.•Thermal water can be used as a source of electrolytes in isotonic drinks.

The looming urgency of feeding the growing world population along with the increasing consumers’ awareness and expectations have driven the evolution of food production systems and the processes and products applied in the food industry. Although substantial progress has been made on food additives, the controversy in which some of them are still shrouded has encouraged research on safer and healthier next generations. These additives can come from natural sources and confer numerous benefits for health, beyond serving the purpose of coloring or preserving, among others. As limiting factors, these additives are often related to stability, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness issues, which justify the need for innovative solutions. In this context, and with the advances witnessed in computers and computational methodologies for in silicoexperimental aid, the development of new safer and more efficient natural additives with dual functionality (colorant and preservative), for instance by the copigmentation phenomena, may be achieved more efficiently, circumventing the current difficulties.

The Solanaceae family is considered one of the most important families among plant species because, on one hand encompasses many staple food crops of the human diet while, on the other hand, it includes species rich in powerful secondary metabolites that could be valorized in medicine or drug formulation as well as nutraceuticals and food supplements. The main genera are Solanum, Capsicum, Physalis, and Lyciumwhich comprise several important cultivated crops (e.g., tomato, pepper, eggplant, tomatillo, and goji berry), as well as genera notable for species with several pharmaceutical properties (e.g., Datura, Nicotiana, Atropa, Mandragora, etc.). This chapter discusses the nutritional value of the most important Solanaceae species commonly used for their edible fruit, as well as those used in the development of functional foods, food supplements, and nutraceuticals due to their bioactive constituents. The toxic and poisonous effects are also discussed aiming to highlight possible detrimental consequences due to irrational use. Finally, considering the high amount of waste and by-products generated through the value chain of the main crops, the sustainable management practices implemented so far are presented with the aim to increase the added-value of these crops.

Research on gastric lipolysis of commercial cow’s milk with different fatty acid (FA) compositions is scarce. Gastric lipase exhibits specificity for the sn-3 chain position of triacylglycerols, whose structure is influenced by milk FA composition. Therefore, during gastric digestion of conventional (C) vs pasture-based (P) milk, differences may occur on lipolysis, which has impact on free FA available, influencing their absorption/metabolism rate and physiological hormonal responses. Those two milk types were subjected to the INFOGEST semi-dynamic digestion model. Five gastric emptying points were analyzed for oxidative degradation of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) and individual free FA. The relative release of medium-chain FA (C8:0–C12:0) was higher than that of longer-chain FA (C14:0–C18:0), and a linear increase in markers of PUFA oxidative degradation occurred along gastric digestion. Quantitatively, C8:0, C18:2n-6, C18:3n-3, and CLAc9t11 were higher (P< 0.001) in P milk when compared with C milk.

The importance of balanced dietary habits, which include appropriate amounts of antioxidants to maintain the immune system, has become increasingly relevant during the current SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 pandemic, because viral infections are characterized by high oxidative stress. Furthermore, the measures taken by governments to control the pandemic have led to increased anxiety, stress, and depression, which affect physical and mental health, all of which are influenced by nutritional status, diet, and lifestyle. The Mediterranean diet (MD), Atlantic diet (AD), and the Dietary Guidelines for Americans all provide the essential vitamins, minerals, and phenolic compounds needed to activate enzymatic and nonenzymatic antioxidant responses. However, viral pandemics such as the current COVID-19 crisis entail high oxidative damage caused by both the infection and the resultant social stresses within populations, which increases the probability and severity of infection. Balanced dietary patterns such as the MD and the AD are characterized by the consumption of fruit, vegetables, legumes, olive oil, and whole grains with low intakes of processed foods and red meat. For a healthy lifestyle in young adults, the MD in particular provides the required amount of antioxidants per day for vitamins D (0.3–3.8 μg), E (17.0 mg), C (137.2–269.8 mg), A (1273.3 μg), B-12 (1.5–2.0 μg), and folate (455.1–561.3 μg), the minerals Se (120.0 μg), Zn (11.0 mg), Fe (15.0–18.8 mg), and Mn (5.2–12.5 mg), and polyphenols (1171.00 mg) needed to maintain an active immune response. However, all of these diets are deficient in the recommended amount of vitamin D (20 μg/d). Therefore, vulnerable populations such as elders and obese individuals could benefit from antioxidant supplementation to improve their antioxidant response. Although evidence remains scarce, there is some indication that a healthy diet, along with supplemental antioxidant intake, is beneficial to COVID-19 patients.

Bioactive compounds derived from mushrooms have been shown to present promising potential as cosmeceutical or nutricosmetic ingredients. Scientific data reviewed herein showed that extracts prepared from medicinal and edible mushrooms and their individual metabolites presented antiinflammatory, antioxidant, photoprotective, antimicrobial, anti-tyrosinase, anti-elastase, and anticollagenase activities. These metabolites can be utilised as ingredients to suppress the severity of Inflammatory Skin Diseases, offer photoprotection to the skin, and correct Hyperpigmentation. However, studies regarding the molecular mechanism behind the mentioned bioactivities are still lacking. Challenges associated with the use of mushroom extracts and their associated metabolites as cosmeceutical and nutricosmetic ingredients include several steps from the fruiting bodies to the final product: extraction optimization, estimation of the efficacy and safety claims, the use of micro and nanocarriers to allow for controlled release and the pros and cons associated with the use of extracts vs individual compounds. This systematic review highlights that mushrooms contain diverse biomolecules that can be sustainably used in the development of nutricosmetic and cosmeceutical formulations. Reports regarding stability, compatibility, and safety assessment, but also toxicological studies are still needed to be considered. Furthermore, some of the constraints and limitations hindering the development of this type of ingredients still require long-term studies to achieve major breakthroughs.

Due to the growing demand in society for healthier foods, scientific communities are searching and developing new ingredients. In this context, agro-industrial residues, which can have a negative impact on the environment, represent a natural source for bioactive compounds and their recovery can contribute to economic and environmental sustainability. Ionizing radiation is a clean and eco-friendly technology that can be used to improve the extraction of bioactive compounds. The aim of this review, after presenting general aspects about bioactive compounds in agro-industrial residues and radiation technologies, is to focus on the effects of ionizing radiation on the extraction of bioactive compounds from these residues and related bioactive properties. Irradiated residues were demonstrated to have enhanced bioactive characteristics that turn the prepared extracts suitable for applications in food industry, resulting in high-added-value products as well as reducing adverse impacts on the environment.

Background: Neurodegenerative disorders have achieved epidemic levels in the last decades; not only the elderly but also adult individuals have been increasingly affected. Among them, Alzheimer’s disease is one of the most prevalent and crippling diseases, associated with high rates of multi-morbidities and dependency. Despite the existence of a wide variety of drugs used as the symptomatic treatment, they have some side effects and toxicity, apart from their limited effectiveness. Botanical preparations have a secular use, being widely recommended for a multitude of purposes, such as for the improvement of brain health. Objective: The aim of the present report is to systematize the knowledge on plant-food derived bioactive molecules with promising in vitro enzymatic inhibitory activities. Results: Alkaloids, phenolic compounds and terpenes are the most studied phytochemicals, both derived from natural and commercial sources. In spite of their efficient activity as enzymatic inhibitors, the number of in vivo studies and even clinical trials have confirmed that their real bioactive potential remains scarce. Conclusion: Thus, it is of the utmost importance to deepen knowledge in this area, once those relevant and informative tools can significantly contribute to the promising advances in the field of Alzheimer’s disease treatment.

Bacterial resistance to therapeutical drugs has been a serious issue over the last decades. In fact, the quick development of resistance mechanisms by the microorganisms has been fatal for millions of people around the world, turning into a public health issue. The major cause of the resistance mechanisms is the overuse of antimicrobials. European countries try to implement mechanisms to overcome antimicrobial resistance in the community through the rational use of antimicrobials. The scientific community has been exhaustively dedicated to the discovering of new, safer and efficient drugs, being the exploitation of natural resources, mainly plants and fungi, considered as a hot topic in the field of antimicrobial agents. Innumerous reports have already shown the promising capacity of natural products or molecules extracted from these natural resources, to act as bacteriostatic and bactericidal agents. More importantly, these natural agents present significantly lower harmful effects. Bearing that in mind, this review aims at giving a contribution to the knowledge about the synthetic antibiotics of the last generation. Moreover, it is intended to provide information about the last advances regarding the discovery of new antimicrobial agents. Thus, a compilation of the chemical characteristics, efficiency, harmful outcomes and resistance mechanisms developed by the microorganisms can be consulted in the following sections together with a critical discussion, in line with the recent approaches. Furthermore, modern strategies for the prospection of novel anti-infective compounds for tackling resistant bacteria have been considered as also a current synopsis of plants and mushrooms with relevant antimicrobial potentials.

Mandarina Bavaria is a “Special Flavor” hop variety, described as fruity, with pronounced mandarin and citrus, combined with traditional hoppy sensations. The relationship between fruity-citrus intensity and the volatile profile of dry-hopped beers was assessed in order to predict the sensory perception of those dry-hopped beers using the content of selected volatile compounds. For this purpose, two base beers (A and B) that presented statistical differences (p< 0.05) in the composition of volatile compounds and on the sensory perception were dry hopped with 3 g/L Mandarina Bavaria hop. Twenty-four volatiles from hop were quantified during 15 days of dry hopping, while the sensory perception was followed by a certified trained panel. The sensory perception of total hoppy content (in a scale from 0 to 5) can be estimated using a PLS equation (Q2= 0.654): total hoppy = 1.8 + [myrcene (μg/L) × 7.5 × 10–3] + [2-methylbutyl-2-methylpropanoate (μg/L) × 4.2 × 10–3] + [linalool (μg/L) × 7.2 × 10–3] + [α-humulene (μg/L) × 2.3 × 10–3]). Successful models were also obtained to predict citrus (Q2= 0.745), green fruit (Q2= 0.598), and sweet fruit (Q2= 0.626) characteristics of dry-hopped beers.

Palladium-(Pd)-based drugs are emerging as alternatives to platinum (Pt) anticancer chemotherapeutics, which increases the need for efficient and suitable procedures of Pd analysis in reduced amounts of pre-clinical animal samples. Herein, an ICP-MS (inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry) method was developed and validated for simple and fast analysis of Pd/Pt-based drugs in 11 distinct biological matrices (adipose tissue, muscle, liver, kidney, spleen, testis, heart, lungs, brain, blood and serum). The critical variables affecting sample preparation and Pd/Pt extraction were optimized using two-level (2k) factorial and central composite designs. Biological samples (50 mg) were digested in closed tubes with a screw cap, using a 3 : 1 (v/v) mixture of nitric acid (900 μL) and hydrochloric acid (300 μL) for 60 min in a 90 °C water bath. Full method validation using in-house materials showed a LOD of 0.001 μg L−1, linear dynamic range from 0.025–10 μg L−1(R2= 0.9999 for Pd; R2= 0.9998 for Pt), good repeatability (CV: 0.02–1.9%) and intermediate precision (CV: 0.52–1.53%) for both the studied metals. The accuracy ranged from 83.5–105.1% considering microwave-assisted digestion as the reference method. The developed and validated method allows the processing of hundreds of biological samples simultaneously, with low reagent and sample consumption. Therefore, the method is highly suitable for analysis of novel Pd/Pt-based drugs in pharmaco-toxicokinetic and biodistribution animal studies that involve a large number of multi-organ samples.

Background: Plants from the Geranium genus, which comprises about 400 species, have been used since ancient times in the practice of traditional medicines throughout the world. Therefore, herbal preparations based on Geranium species have found wide usage for the treatment of a variety of ailments. The aim of this work is to present a review, as comprehensive as possible, of the studies concerning different biological activities of Geranium species. Methods: Relevant data were obtained through systematic computer searches from major reputed scientific databases, particularly Web of Science and Scopus. Occasionally, information issued in primary sources not covered by these databases was also included provided published as peer-reviewed literature. This review covers the literature disclosed till the end of 2018. Results: Accompanying the increasing interest in herbal medicines in general, the evaluation of the biological properties of medicinal plants from the Geranium genus has been addressed thoroughly, mostly over the last two decades. Geranium species are endowed with a number of different biological activities. Herein, we present a survey of the results of the studies concerning these different biological activities. Conclusion: Most studies found in the literature effectively contribute to scientifically validate the beneficial properties of Geranium plants claimed by traditional medicines and medical herbalism and demonstrate that many of them possess evident therapeutic properties.

Consumers’ demand for healthier foods with functional properties has had a clear influence on the food industry and in this sense, they have been attaching natural sources of bioactive ingredients into food products. Vaccinium myrtillus L. (bilberry) is known to be a functional food, presenting its fruits in the form of a small dark blueberry. This coloration is due to its high content in anthocyanin, being also associated with bilberries’ beneficial health effects. In the bilberry industry, there is a very high annual loss of this fruit due to the less aesthetic shape or appearance, in which they cannot be considered suitable for sale and are therefore disposed of as biological waste. Therefore, it is of great importance to valorize this fruit and this review aimed to completely characterize the fruits of V. myrtillus in order to comprehend the relationship between their consumption and the beneficial effects regarding consumer’s health. Thus, this review provides a description of the nutritional and bioactive compounds present in bilberry fruits, followed by their beneficial health effects. An overview of the natural pigments present in these fruits was also explored, focusing particularly in the anthocyanins composition, which represents the most widely studied class of bioactive compounds of V. myrtillus fruits. Finally, industrial applications of these fruits and by-products, as an efficient approach to the production of value-added products with economical and environmental impact, were also discussed. In general, V. myrtillus is a rich source of micronutrients and phytochemical compounds, such as organic acids, sugars, vitamins, fibers and phenolic compounds (anthocyanin and non-anthocyanin compounds), with nutritional and functional properties, that justify the growing interest in these berries, not only for food applications, but also in the pharmaceutical industry.

Different Violaspecies are known for their traditional use as analgesic, antitussive, febrifuge, hipnotic, analgesic and anti-inflammatory medicinal agents. Additionally, they are considered edible flowers in certain cultures. Thus, the aim of this work was to characterize the phenolic composition and to assess the neuroprotective properties of Viola cornutaand Violax wittrockianausing in vitroand in vivomethodologies with Caenorhabditis elegansas model. The identification of the phenolic compounds was carried out with a LC-DAD-ESI/MSn. The antioxidant activity of the extracts was determined in vitrousing Folin- Ciocalteu, DPPH and FRAP assays and in vivowith a juglone-induced oxidative stress in C. elegans. The neuroprotective properties were evaluated measuring the ability to inhibit CNS enzymes (MAO A, AChE), and the capability to avoid paralyzing the C. elegansCL4176, an Alzheimer disease model. The phenolic content was higher in V.x wittrockiana, being quercetin-3-O-(6-O-rhamnosylglucoside)-7-O-rhamnoside the predominant compound in the extract, which also exhibited a stronger antioxidant capacity in vitroand a higher response to lethal oxidative stress on C. elegansthan V. cornuta.Only V.x wittrockianashowed inhibitory effect on CNS enzymes, such as acetylcholinesterase and monoamine oxidase A, but both had protective effect against the paralysis of C. elegans.These findings suggest that the studied V. cornutaand V. x wittrockianacould be interesting candidates for age related neurodegenerative disorder associated with oxidative stress.
