The article presents a case study which investigates the cause behind the death of the Intermediate Egret (Egretta intermedia) found in South Korea. Topics discussed include a detailed description of the autopsy conducted on the dead bird, the use of conventional microbiological methods to detect the presence of the pathogen known as Salmonella Typhimurium, and a detailed analysis of the medical findings.

The hemagglutination inhibition (HI) assay is the standard diagnostic test for detection of antibodies to avian influenza viruses. It is well known that chicken serum does not require additional serum pretreatment to remove nonspecific inhibitors (NSIs). However, NSIs were recognized in certain Korean local breeds. In the present study, various treatments were compared to remove such NSIs. Heat treatment, red blood cell adsorption, and kaolin treatment did not remove NSIs effectively, and treatment with periodate only partly eliminated the NSIs. Receptor destroying enzyme (RDE) treatment appeared to effectively remove NSIs from chicken sera, regardless of breeds. It is proposed that RDE treatment should be included in the HI tests for serological diagnosis of avian Influenza A virus. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

The article presents a study that investigated the prevalence and cross-immunity of Eimeria species in fecal samples from 356 chicken farms in South Korea. Researchers found that 78.7% of the tested farms were positive in Eimeria infection, with seven of the Eimeria species detected by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification of the internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS-I ) region with species-specific primers. They also observed that chickens were infected simultaneously with an average of 3.6 different Eimeria species. The study results may be used to prevent and control coccidiosis in chicken farms.
