1. Multirobot Persistent Monitoring: Minimizing Latency and Number of Robots With Recharging Constraints

Abstract: In this article, we study multirobot path planning for persistent monitoring tasks. We consider the case where robots have a limited battery capacity with a discharge time $D$. We represent the areas to be monitored as the vertices of a weighted graph. For each vertex, there is a constraint on the maximum allowable time between robot visits, called the latency. The objective is to find the minimum number of robots that can satisfy these latency constraints while also ensuring that the robots periodically charge at a recharging depot. The decision version of this problem is known to be PSPACE-complete. We present a $O\left(\frac{\log D}{\log \log D} h \log \rho\right)$ approximation algorithm for the problem where $\rho$ is the ratio of the maximum and the minimum latency constraints, and $h$ reflects the ratio of distance of vertices from the depot to their latency constraints. We also present an orienteering-based heuristic to solve the problem and show empirically that it typically provides higher quality solutions than the approximation algorithm. We extend our results to provide an algorithm for the problem of minimizing the maximum weighted latency given a fixed number of robots. We evaluate our algorithms on large problem instances in a patrolling scenario and in a wildfire monitoring application. We also compare the algorithms with an existing solver on benchmark instances.

5. Programmable Crowding and Tunable Phases in a Binary Mixture of Colloidal Particles under Light-Driven Thermal Convection

Abstract: We employ photothermally driven self-assembly of colloidal particles to design microscopic structures with programmable size and tunable order. The experimental system is based on a binary mixture of “plasmonic heater” gold nanoparticles and “assembly building block” microparticles. Photothermal heating of the gold nanoparticles under visible light causes a natural convection flow that efficiently assembles the microscale building block particles (diameter 1–10 μm) into a monolayer. We identify the onset of active Brownian motion of colloidal particles under this convective flow by varying the conditions of light intensity, gold nanoparticle concentration, and sample height. We realize a crowded assembly of microparticles around the center of illumination and show that the size of the particle crowd can be programmed using patterned light illumination. In a binary mixture of gold nanoparticles and polystyrene microparticles, we demonstrate the formation of rapid and large-scale crystalline monolayers, covering an area of 0.88 mm2within 10 min. We find that the structural order of the assembly can be tuned by varying the surface charge of the nanoparticles and the size of the microparticles, giving rise to the formation of different phases–colloidal crystals, crowds, and gels. Using Monte Carlo simulations, we explain how the phases emerge from the interplay between hydrodynamic and electrostatic interactions, as well as the assembly kinetics. Our study demonstrates the promise of self-assembly with programmable shapes and structural order under nonequilibrium conditions using an accessible setup comprising only binary mixtures and LED light.

7. Dynamic Multimode Fiber Specklegram Sensor Smart Bed Enabled by Deep Learning

Abstract: Fiber specklegram sensors eliminate the need for complex optical interrogators by using a camera to capture images or videos of the speckle pattern at the end facet of a multimode optical fiber. A fiber specklegram sensor is highly sensitive to movement anywhere along the length of the fiber, yielding complex information on external perturbations. The ability of the fiber specklegram sensor to be laid over a large surface area and respond to movement at any location can be useful in many real life sensing problems. Until now, only static speckle images have been used to evaluate such perturbations. However, there are applications where intrinsically dynamic measurands are desired, requiring different approaches to the analysis. In this work, we utilized deep learning techniques to analyze dynamic speckle videos for applications in dynamic biomechanical sensing, which we demonstrated for respiration rate monitoring as a proof-of-concept. This application demands both wide area sensing, that is, coverage of a mattress, together with dynamic information. We achieve this by recording videos of speckle from a single multimode fiber that covers a mattress in an S-configuration, and train convolutional neural networks directly on the video data. We show that the fiber specklegram sensor combined with our deep learning model can accurately classify the respiration rate. This approach has wide reaching potential for other biomechanical healthcare applications, such as pressure sore prevention and continuous monitoring to reduce the risk of falls.

Abstract: Semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist, reduces the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) in people with overweight or obesity, but the effects of this drug on outcomes in patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and heart failure are unknown. We report a prespecified analysis of the effect of once-weekly subcutaneous semaglutide 2·4 mg on ischaemic and heart failure cardiovascular outcomes. We aimed to investigate if semaglutide was beneficial in patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease with a history of heart failure compared with placebo; if there was a difference in outcome in patients designated as having heart failure with preserved ejection fraction compared with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction; and if the efficacy and safety of semaglutide in patients with heart failure was related to baseline characteristics or subtype of heart failure.

13. SRC family kinase inhibition rescues molecular and behavioral phenotypes, but not protein interaction network dynamics, in a mouse model of Fragile X syndrome

Abstract: Glutamatergic synapses encode information from extracellular inputs using dynamic protein interaction networks (PINs) that undergo widespread reorganization following synaptic activity, allowing cells to distinguish between signaling inputs and generate coordinated cellular responses. Here, we investigate how Fragile X Messenger Ribonucleoprotein (FMRP) deficiency disrupts signal transduction through a glutamatergic synapse PIN downstream of NMDA receptor or metabotropic glutamate receptor (mGluR) stimulation. In cultured cortical neurons or acute cortical slices from P7, P17 and P60 FMR1−/ymice, the unstimulated protein interaction network state resembled that of wildtype littermates stimulated with mGluR agonists, demonstrating resting state pre-activation of mGluR signaling networks. In contrast, interactions downstream of NMDAR stimulation were similar to WT. We identified the Src family kinase (SFK) Fyn as a network hub, because many interactions involving Fyn were pre-activated in FMR1−/yanimals. We tested whether targeting SFKs in FMR1−/ymice could modify disease phenotypes, and found that Saracatinib (SCB), an SFK inhibitor, normalized elevated basal protein synthesis, novel object recognition memory and social behavior in FMR1−/ymice. However, SCB treatment did not normalize the PIN to a wild-type-like state in vitro or in vivo, but rather induced extensive changes to protein complexes containing Shank3, NMDARs and Fyn. We conclude that targeting abnormal nodes of a PIN can identify potential disease-modifying drugs, but behavioral rescue does not correlate with PIN normalization.

17. Missing occlusions: Quality gaps for ED patients with occlusion MI.

Abstract: ST-elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) guidelines encourage monitoring of false positives (Code STEMI without culprit) but ignore false negatives (non-STEMI with occlusion myocardial infarction [OMI]). We evaluated the hospital course of emergency department (ED) patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) using STEMI vs OMI paradigms. This retrospective chart review examined all ACS patients admitted through two academic EDs, from June 2021 to May 2022, categorized as 1) OMI (acute culprit lesion with TIMI 0–2 flow, or acute culprit lesion with TIMI 3 flow and peak troponin I >10,000 ng/L; or, if no angiogram, peak troponin >10,000 ng/L with new regional wall motion abnormality), 2) NOMI (Non-OMI, i.e. MI without OMI) or 3) MIRO (MI ruled out: no troponin elevation). Patients were stratified by admission for STEMI. Initial ECGs were reviewed for automated interpretation of "STEMI", and admission/discharge diagnoses were compared. Among 382 patients, there were 141 OMIs, 181 NOMIs, and 60 MIROs. Only 40.4% of OMIs were admitted as STEMI: 60.0% had "STEMI" on ECG, and median door-to-cath time was 103 min (IQR 71–149). But 59.6% of OMIs were not admitted as STEMI: 1.3% had "STEMI" on ECG (p < 0.001) and median door-to-cath time was 1712 min (IQR 1043–3960; p < 0.001). While 13.9% of STEMIs were false positive and had a different discharge diagnosis, 32.0% of Non-STEMIs had OMI but were still discharged as "Non-STEMI." STEMI criteria miss a majority of OMI, and discharge diagnoses highlight false positive STEMI but never false negative STEMI. The OMI paradigm reveals quality gaps and opportunities for improvement. • STEMI criteria miss the majority of OMI, resulting in reperfusion delay. • Non-STEMI with OMI have high peak troponin and regional wall motion abnormalities. • Discharge diagnoses change for false positive STEMI but not false negative STEMI. • The OMI paradigm can reveal quality gaps and design interventions to address them. Abstract: Electrocardiogram (ECG) interpretation training is a fundamental component of medical education across disciplines. However, the skill of interpreting ECGs is not universal among medical graduates, and numerous barriers and challenges exist in medical training and clinical practice. An evidence-based and widely accessible learning solution is needed. The EDUcation Curriculum Assessment for Teaching Electrocardiography (EDUCATE) Trial is a prospective, international, investigator-initiated, open-label, randomized controlled trial designed to determine the efficacy of self-directed and active-learning approaches of a web-based educational platform for improving ECG interpretation proficiency. Target enrollment is 1000 medical professionals from a variety of medical disciplines and training levels. Participants will complete a pre-intervention baseline survey and an ECG interpretation proficiency test. After completion, participants will be randomized into one of four groups in a 1:1:1:1 fashion: (i) an online, question-based learning resource, (ii) an online, lecture-based learning resource, (iii) an online, hybrid question- and lecture-based learning resource, or (iv) a control group with no ECG learning resources. The primary endpoint will be the change in overall ECG interpretation performance according to pre- and post-intervention tests, and it will be measured within and compared between medical professional groups. Secondary endpoints will include changes in ECG interpretation time, self-reported confidence, and interpretation accuracy for specific ECG findings. The EDUCATE Trial is a pioneering initiative aiming to establish a practical, widely available, evidence-based solution to enhance ECG interpretation proficiency among medical professionals. Through its innovative study design, it tackles the currently unaddressed challenges of ECG interpretation education in the modern era. The trial seeks to pinpoint performance gaps across medical professions, compare the effectiveness of different web-based ECG content delivery methods, and create initial evidence for competency-based standards. Abstract: Abstract:This essay explores six images of Thomas More's life and character found in authors across the sixteenth century, stretching from the autobiographical More to the humanist Erasmus (whose friendship More enjoyed), the reformers Tyndale and Foxe (authors of polemics against More), the translator Robinson (whose English Utopia remains illuminating), and the biographer Stapleton (whose life of More emphasizes Catholicism and classical comparisons). This essay explores the reception of More at the beginning of a legacy struggle lasting to the present moment. How did each understand More? what was it about More that provoked admiration, consternation, lamentation, condemnation, or commendation? In addition to presenting and probing these representative images, the essay suggests that the only road to a better, more truthful, more accurate, or more complete Thomas More runs straight through renewed and careful study of his immense English and Latin literary output and especially the intellectual history, legal history, and theological history informing his life, death, and afterlives.

Abstract: The spectrum, pathophysiology and recovery trajectory of persistent post-COVID-19 cognitive deficits are unknown, limiting our ability to develop prevention and treatment strategies. We report the 1-year cognitive, serum biomarker and neuroimaging findings from a prospective, national study of cognition in 351 COVID-19 patients who required hospitalization, compared with 2,927 normative matched controls. Cognitive deficits were global, associated with elevated brain injury markers and reduced anterior cingulate cortex volume 1 year after COVID-19. Severity of the initial infective insult, postacute psychiatric symptoms and a history of encephalopathy were associated with the greatest deficits. There was strong concordance between subjective and objective cognitive deficits. Longitudinal follow-up in 106 patients demonstrated a trend toward recovery. Together, these findings support the hypothesis that brain injury in moderate to severe COVID-19 may be immune-mediated, and should guide the development of therapeutic strategies.

22. Anytime Replanning of Robot Coverage Paths for Partially Unknown Environments

Abstract: In this article, we propose a method to replan coverage paths for a robot operating in an environment with initially unknown static obstacles. Existing coverage approaches reduce coverage time by covering along the minimum number of coverage lines (straight-line paths). However, recomputing such paths online can be computationally expensive resulting in robot stoppages that increase coverage time. A naive alternative is greedy detour replanning, i.e., replanning with minimum deviation from the initial path, which is efficient to compute but may result in unnecessary detours. In this work, we propose an anytime coverage replanning approach named OARP-Replan that performs near-optimal replans to an interrupted coverage path within a given time budget. We do this by solving linear relaxations of integer linear programs to identify sections of the interrupted path that can be optimally replanned within the time budget. We validate OARP-Replan in simulation and perform comparisons against a greedy detour replanner and other state-of-the-art coverage planners. We also demonstrate OARP-Replan in experiments using an industrial-level autonomous robot.

23. Regret-Based Sampling of Pareto Fronts for Multiobjective Robot Planning Problems

Abstract: Many problems in robotics seek to simultaneously optimize several competing objectives. A conventional approach is to create a single cost function comprised of the weighted sum of the individual objectives. Solutions to this scalarized optimization problem are Pareto optimal solutions to the original multiobjective problem. However, finding an accurate representation of a Pareto front remains an important challenge. Uniformly spaced weights are often inefficient and do not provide error bounds. We address the problem of computing a finite set of weights whose optimal solutions closely approximate the solution of any other weight vector. To this end, we prove fundamental properties of the optimal cost as a function of the weight vector. We propose an algorithm that greedily adds the weight vector least-represented by the current set, and provide bounds on the regret. We extend our method to include suboptimal solvers for the scalarized optimization, and handle stochastic inputs to the planning problem. Finally, we illustrate that the proposed approach significantly outperforms baseline approaches for different robot planning problems with varying numbers of objective functions.

24. Label Free hCG Concentration Biosensor Based on Suspension Core Fiber Microfluidic Technology

Abstract: In this paper, a microfluidic sensor based on suspended core fiber (SCF) for detecting the concentration of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) has been presented and experimentally demonstrated. The sensor is made by splicing SCF between two sections of drawn-tapered single-mode fiber (SMF). The SCF is a multimode fiber that supports multi-mode optical transmission and generates mode interference in the fiber core. The air holes in the SCF can also be used as microcirculation channels for the sensor, enhancing the interaction between the detection sample and the light field and improving the refractive index (RI) sensitivity. Due to the closed microchannels, the sensor has good anti-interference and stability, can effectively prevent biological pollution. The sensitivity of RI is 1848 nm/RIU in the RI range of 1.3335-1.3419. The sensor can also detect local RI changes on the fiber surface due to biomolecule binding. The hCG antigen can specifically bind to the hCG-β antibody. The hCG-β antibody is immobilized in the air holes of the SCF to specifically detect the concentration of hCG. Experimental results showed that the sensor can specifically detect hCG concentration with a sensitivity of 1.888 nm/(mIU/ml) and a detection limit of 0.049 mIU/ml at a temperature of 25 °C. This sensor has good specificity and potential applications in medical diagnostics, drug testing, and tumor screening.

25. Predictive Dead Reckoning for Online Peer-to-Peer Games

Abstract: In online peer-to-peer games, players send periodic updates to each other and each player must locally reconstruct the position of their opponents in between these updates. In scenarios where players are driving cars, high speeds produce more pronounced errors in local replication of online opponents. In this work, we propose a new method of replicating opponents with less data sent and up to 45% less error compared to the state-of-the-art. We use a neural network-based approach to predict an opponent's position, combined with a path tracking controller from the field of mobile robotics, to produce smooth, believable trajectories for opponents' vehicles. We also propose a neural network-based approach to predict a replicated opponent's trajectory following a collision with a static obstacle.

26. Ultrasensitive Label-Free Biosensor for Triglyceride Detection Based on Exposed-Core Optical Fiber

Abstract: Accurate detection of triglycerides (TGs) is important for the prevention and monitoring of dyslipidemia and for understanding the mechanisms of metabolic diseases. In this article, an ultrasensitive label-free sensor for measuring TGs based on an exposed-core optical fiber is presented. The sensor head was formed by splicing a single-mode optical fiber, a multimode optical fiber, and an exposed-core fiber in a Mach–Zehnder interferometer configuration. The Mach–Zehnder interference (MZI) occurs between the exposed core of the fiber, which is only micrometer in size, and the external environment. This allows the light path to pass directly through the liquid sample, resulting in an ultrahigh refractive index sensitivity of 13300 nm/RIU in the refractive index range of 1.331–1.332. In addition, lipase is immobilized on the optical fiber sensor to measure the concentration of TGs by detecting the change in the refractive index of the sample solution caused by the hydrolysis of TGs by lipase. The results showed that this sensor can specifically detect the concentration of TGs with a sensitivity of 1.72 nm/nM and a detection limit of 35 pM. It has the potential to revolutionize the diagnosis and monitoring of TGs and thus impact the prevention and treatment of dyslipidemia and other metabolic diseases.

Abstract: Optical fiber pressure sensing is of significant interest for industrial process monitoring and acoustic sensing. However, the direct detection of pressure changes along an optical fiber with minimal crosstalk is a significant challenge due to the low stress-optic coefficient of glass and interferences from temperature, bending, and strain. Here, we demonstrate that deep learning combined with microstructured optical fiber specklegram sensing is an effective approach to overcoming environmental crosstalk for the challenging application of pressure sensing. Specklegrams created from multimode interference are inherently sensitive to both the measurand of interest and other environmental perturbations. By employing a deep neural network, namely a multilayer perceptron, we show that the environmental crosstalk of the specklegram-based pressure sensor can be mitigated. Furthermore, we demonstrate the practical implementation of the machine learning-based pressure sensor where we need to continuously update the model. We show that the network can learn and reject environmental disturbances and predict pressure values correctly through continuous training updates. This technique approaches the instrument error of our calibration pressure gauge, with an error below 3 kPa over a range of 1 MPa.

Abstract: Angiosperms are the cornerstone of most terrestrial ecosystems and human livelihoods1,2. A robust understanding of angiosperm evolution is required to explain their rise to ecological dominance. So far, the angiosperm tree of life has been determined primarily by means of analyses of the plastid genome3,4. Many studies have drawn on this foundational work, such as classification and first insights into angiosperm diversification since their Mesozoic origins5–7. However, the limited and biased sampling of both taxa and genomes undermines confidence in the tree and its implications. Here, we build the tree of life for almost 8,000 (about 60%) angiosperm genera using a standardized set of 353 nuclear genes8. This 15-fold increase in genus-level sampling relative to comparable nuclear studies9provides a critical test of earlier results and brings notable change to key groups, especially in rosids, while substantiating many previously predicted relationships. Scaling this tree to time using 200 fossils, we discovered that early angiosperm evolution was characterized by high gene tree conflict and explosive diversification, giving rise to more than 80% of extant angiosperm orders. Steady diversification ensued through the remaining Mesozoic Era until rates resurged in the Cenozoic Era, concurrent with decreasing global temperatures and tightly linked with gene tree conflict. Taken together, our extensive sampling combined with advanced phylogenomic methods shows the deep history and full complexity in the evolution of a megadiverse clade.

Abstract: It is well established that plants need a range of soil nutrients to grow. In farming, these nutrients are generally added to the soil in the form of fertilizers. However, depending on the soil conditions (such as temperature, water content, pH, and soil type), nutrients may not be in the right form for plant uptake. Determining the availability of nutrients in the soil for plant growth is therefore critical for the yield and productivity of modern farming. A considerable amount of research and knowledge has been developed that shows the importance of the soil pH on the availability (or not) of nutrients. Furthermore, pH plays a crucial role in controlling the availability of potential toxic elements, such as aluminum and manganese. This review article discusses recent research aimed at real‐time and continuous soil pH measurement in‐situ. More specifically, it focuses on the development of polymer materials that will ultimately enable pH measurements for the specific application of in‐ground pH sensing. Given the breadth of the polymeric sensor research field, this review has a narrowed focus on optical and electrochemical transduction methods.

Abstract: Rapid emissions reductions, including reductions in deforestation-based land emissions, are the dominant source of global climate mitigation potential in the coming decades. However, carbon dioxide removal (CDR) will also have an important role to play. Despite this, it remains unclear whether current national proposals for CDR align with temperature targets. Here we show the ‘CDR gap’, that is, CDR efforts proposed by countries fall short of those in integrated assessment model scenarios that limit warming to 1.5 °C. However, the most ambitious proposals for CDR are close to levels in a low-energy demand scenario with the most-limited CDR scaling and aggressive near-term emissions reductions. Further, we observe that many countries propose to expand land-based removals, but none yet commit to substantively scaling novel methods such as bioenergy carbon capture and storage, biochar or direct air carbon capture and storage.

31. Premorbid brain structure influences risk of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

Abstract: BackgroundAmyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a disease of the motor network associated with brain structure and functional connectivity alterations that are implicated in disease progression. Whether such changes have a causal role in ALS, fitting with a postulated influence of premorbid cerebral architecture on the phenotypes associated with neurodegenerative disorders is not known.MethodsThis study considered causal effects and shared genetic risk of 2240 structural and functional MRI brain scan imaging-derived phenotypes (IDPs) on ALS using two sample Mendelian randomisation, with putative associations further examined with extensive sensitivity analysis. Shared genetic predisposition between IDPs and ALS was explored using genetic correlation analysis.ResultsIncreased white matter volume in the cerebral hemispheres was causally associated with ALS. Weaker causal associations were observed for brain stem grey matter volume, parieto-occipital white matter surface and volume of the left thalamic ventral anterior nucleus. Genetic correlation was observed between ALS and intracellular volume fraction and isotropic free water volume fraction within the posterior limb of the internal capsule.ConclusionsThis study provides evidence that premorbid brain structure, in particular white matter volume, contributes to the risk of ALS.

32. Multimode Microstructured Optical Fiber Hydrophone

Abstract: We demonstrate a fiber-optic hydrophone using a multimode microstructured pressure-sensitive optical fiber, which has a sensitivity comparable to a commercial electric hydrophone and 14–17 dB improvement over conventional single-mode and multimode optical fiber. We then configure the pressure-sensitive fiber (PSF) with a multifiber fan-out output where each output channel encodes different coupling from the PSF’s modal interference pairs. Thus, each channel has a different response to both the acoustic wave and environmental noise. We use a neural network model as the signal processing module to combine the acoustic signals from the multiple fiber channels to reconstruct the original signal. By combining the channels, the neural network model can effectively reduce crosstalk from environmental noise. We then demonstrate the ability to reconstruct complex audio signals using several classical music symphonies.

33. An Event-Related Potential (ERP) Examination of the Neural Responses to Emotional and Movement-Related Images

Abstract: ABSTRACTPrevious research has suggested that the perception of emotional images may also activate brain regions related to the preparation of motoric plans. However, little research has investigated whether these emotion-movement interactions occur at early or later stages of visual perception. In the current research, event-related potentials (ERPs) were used to examine the time course of the independent – and combined – effects of perceiving emotions and implied movement. Twenty-five participants viewed images from four categories: 1) emotional with implied movement, 2) emotional with no implied movement, 3) neutral with implied movement, and 4) neutral with no implied movement. Both emotional stimuli and movement-related stimuli led to larger N200 (200–300 ms) waveforms. Furthermore, at frontal sites, there was a marginal interaction between emotion and implied movement, such that negative stimuli showed greater N200 amplitudes vs. neutral stimuli, but only for images with implied movement. At posterior sites, a similar effect was observed for images without implied movement. The late positive potential (LPP; 500–1000 ms) was significant for emotion (at frontal sites) and movement (at frontal, central, and posterior sites), as well as for their interaction (at parietal sites), with larger LPPs for negative vs. neutral images with movement only. Together, these results suggest that the perception of emotion and movement interact at later stages of visual perception.

Yet at present, only 2 Gt is being removed per year, and nearly all of it is from forestry—only 0.1% is from novel forms of carbon removal. This commentary shows that the deployment of novel CO2removal (CDR) over the next decade, its formative phase, is likely to be consequential in determining whether CDR will be available at scale and in time to reach net-zero CO2emissions consistent with the Paris Agreement’s temperature goal.

37. ERCA*: A New Approach for the Resource Constrained Shortest Path Problem

Abstract: The Resource Constrained Shortest Path Problem (RCSPP) seeks to determine a minimum-cost path between a start and a goal location while ensuring that one or multiple types of resource consumed along the path do not exceed their limits. This problem is often solved on a graph where a path is incrementally built from the start towards the goal during the search. RCSPP is computationally challenging as comparing these partial solution paths is based on multiple criteria (i.e., the accumulated cost and resource along the path), and in general, there does not exist a single path that optimizes all criteria simultaneously. Consequently, the search needs to maintain and explore a large number of partial paths in order to find an optimal solution. While a variety of algorithms have been developed to solve RCSPP, they either have little consideration about efficiently comparing and maintaining the partial paths, which reduces their overall runtime efficiency, or are restricted to handle only one resource constraint as opposed to multiple resource constraints. This paper develops Enhanced Resource Constrained A* (ERCA*), a fast A*-based algorithm that can find an optimal solution while satisfying multiple resource constraints. ERCA* leverages both the recent advances in multi-objective path planning to efficiently compare and maintain partial paths, and techniques from the existing RCSPP literature. Furthermore, ERCA* has a functional parameter to broker a trade-off between solution quality and runtime efficiency. The results show ERCA* often runs several orders of magnitude faster than an existing leading algorithm for RCSPP.

Abstract: Education researchers, policy makers, and practitioners have emphasized the role that social-emotional learning and self-regulation play in children’s adjustment and connection to school, particularly as they transition from pre-school to kindergarten and the primary grades. A pretest–posttest cluster-randomized efficacy trial of the Social-Emotional Learning Foundations (SELF) curriculum for kindergarten–first-grade students found positive main effects on assessments of self-regulation, social-emotional learning, social-emotional vocabulary, and general behavioral functioning. This study is a secondary analysis using structural equation modeling to explore whether SELF effects on school adjustment were mediated by its effects on language and/or self-regulation–related outcomes. Findings replicated direct effects of treatment but did not support hypothesized mediators. In contrast, direct effects of treatment on measures of competent school functioning and internalizing behavior were mediated by outcome effects on a standardized measure of social-emotional learning competence. Study findings underscore the fundamental importance of social-emotional learning to school success and suggest related measurement issues in social-emotional learning and topics for further research.

43. Spatio-Temporal Lattice Planning Using Optimal Motion Primitives

Abstract: Lattice-based planning techniques simplify the motion planning problem for autonomous vehicles by limiting available motions to a pre-computed set of primitives. These primitives are combined online to generate complex maneuvers. A set of motion primitives $t$ -span a lattice if, given a real number $t\geq 1$ , any configuration in the lattice can be reached via a sequence of motion primitives whose cost is no more than a factor of $t$ from optimal. Computing a minimal $t$ -spanning set balances a trade-off between computed motion quality and motion planning performance. In this work, we formulate this problem for an arbitrary lattice as a mixed integer linear program. We also propose an A*-based algorithm to solve the motion planning problem using these primitives and an algorithm that removes the excessive oscillations from planned motions – a common problem in lattice-based planning. Our method is validated for autonomous driving in both parking lot and highway scenarios.

44. A Bayesian approach to acute coronary occlusion.

Abstract: In the STEMI paradigm, the disease (acute coronary occlusion) is defined and named after one element (ST elevation, without regard to the remainder of the QRST) of one imperfect test (the ECG). This leads to delayed reperfusion for patients with acute coronary occlusion whose ECGs don't meet STEMI criteria. In this editorial, we elaborate on the article by Jose Nunes de Alencar Neto about applying Bayesian reasoning to ECG interpretation. 45. Use of caller ID and text messaging from cell phones to increase response rates in patient surveys

Abstract: Background:High response rates for patient surveys are required in medical literature to ensure non-response bias is minimised. It is often difficult to achieve a satisfactory response rate as patient engagement in surveys is decreasing. A major barrier to phone surveys is getting patients to answer calls from unknown numbers.Purpose:To design a methodology which boosts response rates for telephone-based patient surveys.Research Design:We prospectively analysed the effectiveness of our methodology for increasing patient participation using caller ID and text messanging.Study Sample:Two waves totalling 1313 patients were contacted for participation in a patient survey for a descriptive quantitative and qualitative cohort study using our developed methadology.Data Analysis:We analysed the timepoints at which successful contact was made when using caller ID and text messanging.Results:We achieved a call answer rate of 85.4%, which was a 70.8% increase when compared to a similar patient cohort contacted via blocked caller ID (i.e. with privacy settings).Conclusion:We have developed a simple, inexpensive methodology which, when tested outside the Australian setting and for other projects, shows promise for increasing patient survey response rate.

46. Submodular Maximization With Limited Function Access

Abstract: In this article, we consider a class of submodular maximization problems in which decision-makers have limited access to the objective function. We explore scenarios where the decision-maker can observe only pairwise information, i.e., can evaluate the objective function on sets of size two. We begin with a negative result that no algorithm using only $k$-wise information can guarantee performance better than $k/n$. We present two algorithms that utilize only pairwise information about the function and characterize their performance relative to the optimal, which depends on the curvature of the submodular function. Additionally, if the submodular function possess a property called supermodularity of conditioning, then we can provide a method to bound the performance based purely on pairwise information. The proposed algorithms offer significant computational speedups over a traditional greedy strategy. A by-product of our study is the introduction of two new notions of curvature, the $k$-Marginal Curvature and the $k$-Cardinality Curvature. Finally, we present experiments highlighting the performance of our proposed algorithms in terms of approximation and time complexity.

Abstract: Time-division multiplexing (TDM) of transition-edge-sensor (TES) microcalorimeters is being developed as the readout technology for the Athena X-ray integral field unit (X-IFU) and CMB-S4. We present an experimental demonstration of our latest TDM architecture, which has been implemented in a 4-column × 34-row chip that is fully compatible with the X-IFU design specifications. This new “mux21” architecture is designed for differential readout and uses two-layer switches to reduce the number of row-address lines while also incorporating changes that reduce power to roughly 40% and the total number of SQUIDs to half that of TDM chips used in previous publications. With the 160 ns row durations specified for X-IFU, we obtained (2.02 ± 0.03) eV FWHM energy resolution at 5.9 keV in 2-column × 34-row TDM readout of a NASA X-IFU-like TES array, which meets the requirements of X-IFU's energy-resolution budget. Finally, a scaling analysis of our improved TDM readout chain to bolometer applications indicates that multiplexing factors on the scale of several hundred are possible, depending on the readout requirements.

49. Correcting Gain Drift in TES Detectors for Future X-Ray Satellite Missions

Abstract: Changes in the operating environment of transition-edge sensor (TES) microcalorimeters can cause variations in the detector gain function over time. If not corrected, this can degrade the spectral resolution, and cause systematic errors in the knowledge of the absolute energy. The non-linear nature of the TES energy scale function and the potential for multiple, simultaneous sources of drift can make effective corrections extremely challenging. Satellite instruments typically employ an on-board calibration source to provide known reference X-ray lines. This allows real-time monitoring of the detector gain stability and provides information that can be used to correct for drifts. Here we discuss progress towards demonstrating that the energy scale requirements can be met for future instruments such as Athena X-IFU. We present measurements (from ∼1–12 keV) on ∼200 pixels in a prototype X-IFU array. We use a non-linear drift correction algorithm that uses two fiducial calibration lines (5.4 keV and 8.0 keV) to track gain and interpolate a new, corrected gain between a set of three pre-calibrated gain functions that span the anticipated range of induced drifts. We demonstrate this algorithm is effective at correcting the full gain scale in the presence of multiple sources of environmental drift.
