In this work, a series of π-conjugated Subphthalocyanine dimers assembled by simple π-bridges were efficiently synthesized through metal-catalyzed reactions. Despite being singly linked, these readily accessible arrays exhibit excellent π-electron communication, significantly perturbing the orbital distribution of conventional SubPcs and inducing notable alterations in their optical properties. The findings presented here demonstrate the potential of SubPcs for constructing curved porphyrin arrays with well-conjugated skeletons and intriguing functionalities.

A newly designed C3-symmetric disc-shaped chromophore, BTT(NDI)3, features electron accepting naphthalene diimides linked to an electron donor BTT core. BTT(NDI)3self-assembles in apolar solvents into highly ordered, chiral supramolecular fibers through π–π and 3-fold hydrogen-bonding interactions. This leads to a cooperative formation of plane-to-plane stacking of BTTs and J-aggregation of the outer NDIs. Such a structure ensures high charge mobility. Only photoexcitation of BTT in the BTT(NDI)3polymers triggers a unidirectional electron transfer from BTT to NDI and results in (BTT•+-NDI•–) lifetimes that are by up to 3 orders of magnitude longer compared to (NDI•+-NDI•–) that is formed upon NDI photoexcitation. A multiphasic decay implies ambipolar pathways for charge carriers, that is, electron and hole delocalization along the respective BTT and NDI stacks. Our supramolecular approach offers potential for developing functional supramolecular polymers with continuous pathways for electrons and holes and, in turn, minimizing charge recombination losses in organic photovoltaic devices.

A subporphyrazine (SubPz)–dithienylethene (DTE) photochromic device with 1oand 1cstates, was developed and characterized. In this device, the DTE unit can reversibly switch the SubPz absorbance from green to near-infrared [λmax(o/c) = 527 nm/740 nm], as well as the SubPz fluorescence and singlet oxygen quantum yields. The core of this design involves using a highly tunable SubPz chromophore that shares its quasi-isolated ethene moiety with a DTE photoswitch.

Subphthalocyanines (SubPcs) are bowl-shaped dyes exhibiting valuable properties for technological applications. Such properties strongly depend on the groups attached to the molecule. Their functionality can therefore be modulated.The bowl shape governs the supramolecular organization of SubPcs. By concave–convex interaction, they can organize into columnar stacks or recognize other nonplanar π-molecules.SubPcs are non-centrosymmetric molecules. As a result, they display a dipole moment and can be chiral if appropriately substituted. These attributes enable the preparation of polarized materials and chiral devices, respectively.SubPcs can be applied in any field involving light absorption and charge transport. To this end, a deep understanding of the structure–property relationships, as well as how they can be implemented in devices, is crucial.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) represents a promising treatment modality for a range of cancers and other non-malignant diseases due to its non-invasive nature arising from the light-dependent activation. However, PDT has not been the first-line treatment of cancer thus far as a consequence of, among others, the lack of effective transport and activation strategies, and the undesired side effect caused by skin photosensitisation induced by the “always on” photosensitisers. To overcome this “Achilles’ heel”, we present herein a non-covalent approach to construct a one-component dynamic supramolecular nanophotosensitising system based on a carefully designed porphyrin. The control of the photoactivities of the resulting supramolecular fibres lies in the spatiotemporal control of the monomer-polymer equilibrium. Both the thermodynamics and kinetics of this nanosystem have been carefully studied by different techniques. Moreover, in vitroand in vivostudies have also been performed, showing that these supramolecular aggregates exhibit facile cell internalisation and progressive disassembly after being endocyted by targeted cells, leading to activation of the photosensitising units and eventually cell death and tumour eradication under photoirradiation.

Design and synthesis of novel photosensitizer architectures is a key step toward new multifunctional molecular materials. Photoactive Janus-type molecules provide interesting building blocks for such systems by presenting two well-defined chemical functionalities that can be utilized orthogonally. Herein a multifunctional phthalocyanine is reported, bearing a bulky and positively charged moiety that hinders their aggregation while providing the ability to adhere on DNA origami nanostructures via reversible electrostatic interactions. On the other hand, triethylene glycol moieties render a water-soluble and chemically inert corona that can stabilize the structures. This approach provides insight into the molecular design and synthesis of Janus-type sensitizers that can be combined with biomolecules, rendering optically active biohybrids.

Columnar polymers and liquid crystals obtained from π-conjugated cone-shaped molecules are receiving increasing interest due to the possibility of obtaining unconventional polar organizations that show anisotropic charge transport and unique chiroptical properties. However, and in contrast to the more common planar discotics, the self-assembly of conic or pyramidic molecules in solution remains largely unexplored. Here, we show how a molecular geometry change, from flat to conic, can generate supramolecular landscapes where different self-assembled species, each of them being under thermodynamic equilibrium with the monomer, exist exclusively within distinct regimes. In particular, depending on the solvent nature–aromatic or aliphatic–cone-shaped C3-symmetric subphthalocyanine 1can undergo self-assembly either as a tail-to-tail dimer, showing monomer–dimer sigmoidal transitions, or as a head-to-tail noncentrosymmetric columnar polymer, exhibiting a nucleation-elongation polymerization mechanism. Moreover, the experimental and theoretical comparison between racemic and enantiopure samples revealed that the two enantiomers (1Mand 1P) tend to narcissistically self-sort in the dimer regime, each enantiomer showing a strong preference to associate with itself, but socially self-sort in the polymer regime, favoring an alternate stacking order along the columns.

Organic open-shell compounds are extraordinarily attractive materials for their use in molecular spintronics thanks to their long spin-relaxation times and structural flexibility. Porphyrins (Pors) have widely been used as molecular platforms to craft persistent open-shell structures through solution-based redox chemistry. However, very few examples of inherently open-shell Pors have been reported, which are typically obtained through the fusion of non-Kekulé polyaromatic hydrocarbon moieties to the Por core. The inherent instability and low solubility of these radical species, however, requires the use of bulky substituents and multistep synthetic approaches. On-surface synthesis has emerged as a powerful tool to overcome such limitations, giving access to structures that cannot be obtained through classical methods. Herein, we present a simple and straightforward method for the on-surface synthesis of phenalenyl-fused Pors using readily available molecular precursors. In a systematic study, we examine the structural and electronic properties of three surface-supported Pors, bearing zero, two (PorA2), and four (PorA4) meso-fused phenalenyl moieties. Through atomically resolved real-space imaging by scanning probe microscopy and high-resolution scanning tunneling spectroscopy combined with density functional theory calculations, we unambiguously demonstrate a triplet ground state for PorA2and a charge-transfer-induced open-shell character for the intrinsically closed-shell PorA4.

We report here the synthesis of two novel subporphyrins (SubPs), in which the macrocycle has been functionalized at its meso(1) or axial (2) position with tetracyanobuta-1,3-diene (TCBD)–aniline. In-depth spectroscopic, spectrometric, and electrochemical analyses were carried out with both of them, whose molecular structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. In the case of 2, its Raand Saenantiomers were separable by chiral HPLC and presented a fairly good configurational stability at room temperature, which enabled determining the activation parameters for the thermally induced racemization. Conversely, the enantiomers’ separation was unfeasible for 1due to the conformational and/or configurational dynamics of the TCBD–aniline, a structural “flexibility” that could be drastically reduced at low temperatures. The physicochemical impact of placing the TCBD–aniline at either the axial or peripheral positions of SubPs is also rather significant. The HOMO–LUMO gap is reduced by as much as 0.35 eV in SubP–(TCBD–aniline)meso1(1.77 eV) and, in turn, enables an emissive charge-transfer (CT) state in virtually all environments. It is only in polar environments, where it links a local excitation with an indirect charge separation. In contrast, a much larger HOMO–LUMO gap of 2.12 eV in SubP–(TCBD–aniline)axial2disables an emissive CT state and enforces either an exciplex deactivation in apolar environments or a direct charge separation in polar environments.

The efficiency of the vinylene moiety as a linker to intercommunicate the subporphyrazine (SubPz) core with other chromophores and redox active systems has been examined. In addition, different substitution patterns for hexaarylated SubPzs have been explored in order to control the absorption, fluorescence, and redox properties independently of one another. Besides X-ray crystallography, complete spectroscopic and electrochemical characterizations have been performed, and the conclusions have been supported by density functional theory calculations. The absorption and emission profiles, as well as the organization of the macrocycles in the crystalline state, are strongly determined by the substitution pattern. Within the hexaarylated family, para-substitution with electron-rich moieties (i.e., phenylene or ether) red-shifts both the SubPz absorption and emission bands. Progressive fading of these effects upon extending the oligophenylene branches from one to three units evidences the less efficient electronic delocalization over the phenyl ends as the oligophenylene branch is enlarged. Contrasting, meta-substitution produces little variation or blue shift of the SubPz Q-band, while bathochromic shifts are always observed for the emission bands. In hexavinylene-SubPzs, peripheral vinylene moieties adopt a coplanar configuration with the aromatic SubPz core, resulting in a π-extended chromophore that preserves the unique electronic tunability of SubPzs. This is reflected by the strong alteration of the SubPz electronic properties produced by phenyl and biphenyl moieties attached to the vinylene ends.

Scanning probe microscopy (SPM) techniques have shown great potential in fabricating nanoscale structures endowed with exotic quantum properties achieved through various manipulations of atoms and molecules. However, precise control requires extensive domain knowledge, which is not necessarily transferable to new systems and cannot be readily extended to large-scale operations. Therefore, efficient and autonomous SPM techniques are needed to learn optimal strategies for new systems, in particular for the challenge of controlling chemical reactions and hence offering a route to precise atomic and molecular construction. In this paper, we developed a software infrastructure named AutoOSS (Autonomous On-Surface Synthesis) to automate bromine removal from hundreds of Zn(II)-5,15-bis(4-bromo-2,6-dimethylphenyl)porphyrin (ZnBr2Me4DPP) on Au(111), using neural network models to interpret STM outputs and deep reinforcement learning models to optimize manipulation parameters. This is further supported by Bayesian optimization structure search (BOSS) and density functional theory (DFT) computations to explore 3D structures and reaction mechanisms based on STM images.

We describe the preparation of a battery of chiral Zn(II) phthalocyanines with an AABB substitution pattern through cross-condensation of different chiral, binaphthyloxy-linked bisphthalonitriles and (non)functionalized single phthalonitriles. All the compounds are endowed with reactive groups (halogen and/or ethynyl moieties) that will allow us to prepare customized amphiphilic phthalocyanines. Preliminary self-assembly studies in solution have been performed by UV–vis and circular dichroism experiments.

A family of inherently chiral nonplanar aromatic chromophores, comprising Subphthalocyanines bearing fluorenone-fused units (SubFcs), have been prepared by an innovative one-pot synthesis, which relies on the standard cross-cyclotrimerization of phthalonitriles followed by intramolecular Friedel–Crafts acylation. Their Q-band absorption experiences a ca. 20 nm red shift per fused fluorenone as a consequence of the enlarged conjugated π-system.

Phthalocyanines (Pc) are well-known light-harvesting compounds. However, despite the tremendous efforts on phthalocyanine synthesis, the achieved energy conversion efficiencies for Pc-based dye-sensitized solar cells are moderate. To cast light on the factors reducing the conversion efficiency, we have undertaken a time-resolved spectroscopy study of the primary photoinduced reactions at a semiconductor-Pc interface. ZnO nanorods were chosen as a model semiconductor substrate with enhanced specific surface area. The use of a nanostructured oxide surface allows to extend the semiconductor-dye interface with a hole transporting layer (spiro-MeOTAD) in a controlled way, making the studied system closer to a solid-state dye-sensitized solar cell. Four zinc phthalocyanines are compared in this study. The compounds are equipped with bulky peripheral groups designed to reduce the self-aggregation of the Pcs. Almost no signs of aggregation can be observed from the absorption spectra of the Pcs assembled on a ZnO surface. Nevertheless, the time-resolved spectroscopy indicates that there are inter-Pc charge separation–recombination processes in the time frame of 1–100 ps. This may reduce the electron injection efficiency into the ZnO by more than 50%, pointing out to a remaining aggregation effect. Surprisingly, the electron injection time does not correlate with the length of the linker connecting the Pc to ZnO. A correlation between the electron injection time and the ”bulkiness” of the peripheral groups was observed. This correlation is further discussed with the use of computational modeling of the Pc arrangements on the ZnO surface.

The goal of harnessing the theoretical potential of singlet fission (SF), a process in which one singlet excited state is split into two triplet excited states, has become a central challenge in solar energy research. Covalently linked dimers provide crucial models for understanding the role of chromophore arrangement and coupling in SF. Sensitizers can be integrated into these systems to expand the absorption bandwidth through which SF can be accessed. Here, we define the role of the sensitizer-chromophore geometry in a sensitized SF model system. To this end, two conjugates have been synthesized consisting of a pentacene dimer (SF motif) connected via a rigid alkynyl bridge to a subphthalocyanine (the sensitizer motif) in either an axial or a peripheral arrangement. Steady-state and time-resolved photophysical measurements are used to confirm that both conjugates operate as per design, displaying near unity energy transfer efficiencies and high triplet quantum yields from SF. Decisively, energy transfer between the subphthalocyanine and pentacene dimer occurs ca. 26 times faster in the peripheral conjugate, even though the two chromophores are ca. 3 Å farther apart than in the axial conjugate. Following a theoretical evaluation of the dipolar coupling, Vdip2, and the orientation factor, κ2, of both the axial (Vdip2= 140 cm–2; κ2= 0.08) and the peripheral (Vdip2= 724 cm–2; κ2= 1.46) arrangements, we establish that this rate acceleration is due to a more favorable (nearly co-planar) relative orientation of the transition dipole moments of the subphthalocyanine and pentacenes in the peripheral constellation.

Pt(II)-BODIPY complexes combine the chemotherapeutic activity of Pt(II) with the photocytotoxicity of BODIPYs. Additional conjugation with targeting ligands can boost the uptake by cancer cells that overexpress the corresponding receptors. We describe two Pt(II) triangles, 1and 2, built with pyridyl BODIPYs functionalized with glucose (3) or triethylene glycol methyl ether (4), respectively. Both 1and 2showed higher singlet oxygen quantum yields than 3and 4, due to the enhanced singlet-to-triplet intersystem crossing. To evaluate the targeting effect of the glycosylated derivative, in vitro experiments were performed using glucose transporter 1 (GLUT1)-positive HT29 and A549 cancer cells, and noncancerous HEK293 cells as control. Both 1and 2showed higher cellular uptake than 3and 4. Specifically, 1was selective and highly cytotoxic toward HT29 and A549 cells. The synergistic chemo- and photodynamic behavior of the metallacycles was also confirmed. Notably, 1exhibited superior efficacy toward the cisplatin-resistant R-HepG2 cells.
