Detecting abnormal crowd motion emerging from complex interactions of individuals is paramount to ensure the safety of crowds. Crowd-level abnormal behaviors (CABs), e.g., counter flow and crowd turbulence, are proven to be the crucial causes of many crowd disasters. In the recent decade, video anomaly detection (VAD) techniques have achieved remarkable success in detecting individual-level abnormal behaviors (e.g., sudden running, fighting and stealing), but research on VAD for CABs is rather limited. Unlike individual-level anomaly, CABs usually do not exhibit salient difference from the normal behaviors when observed locally, and the scale of CABs could vary from one scenario to another. In this paper, we present a systematic study to tackle the important problem of VAD for CABs with a novel crowd motion learning framework, multi-scale motion consistency network (MSMC-Net). MSMC-Net first captures the spatial and temporal crowd motion consistency information in a graph representation. Then, it simultaneously trains multiple feature graphs constructed at different scales to capture rich crowd patterns. An attention network is used to adaptively fuse the multi-scale features for better CAB detection. For the empirical study, we consider three large-scale crowd event datasets, UMN, Hajj and Love Parade. The specific energy loss (dE/dx) resolution is critical for particle identification and separation in TPC. In connection with the R&D for the TPC at the Circular Electron Positron Collider (CEPC), we find the laser ionisation obeys the Gaussian distribution theoretically and experimentally. Based on this, we develop a novel method using a 266 nm UV laser to measure the dE/dx resolution. Comparing to the traditional methods with particle beams or cosmic rays, the novel method with 266 nm UV laser is more convenient and flexible. We verify the method's feasibility with a TPC prototype and extrapolate the dE/dx resolution to the CEPC TPC. A challenging goal of 20 ps for the total time resolution of the Multi-gap Resistive Plate Chambers (MRPCs) system has been recently addressed by high energy physics experiments. In order to meet this requirement, one should have a deeper understanding of the detector physics and the factors that contribute to the intrinsic time resolution of the MRPC, which are studied in this paper. The sources of the timing uncertainties, their influences and the relationship with the detector geometry are analyzed. A comparison between the time resolutions obtained using two different simulation algorithms is presented. The obtained results are useful for the design of the timing MRPCs with an improved performance, and meanwhile offer guidance for the R&D activities in the field., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures

A 3-D position sensitive neutron detector is being developed based on a plastic scintillator array. A double side SiPM readout is used to determine the depth of interaction (DOI) in each scintillator unit. In the preliminary test, the DOI in a 254 x 6 x 6 mm3 SP101 plastic scintillator is measured at different positions using a collimated Co-60 source. The SiPM (KETEK PM6660) signals are recorded by a 2.5 GS/s digital oscilloscope. The DOI results are calculated using both the amplitude and the temporal information. Position resolutions (FWHM) of 2.5 cm and 6.6 cm are realized, respectively. A detector based on a 2-D array is capable of recording the 3-D position information of the incident neutron. The 3-D detector is to be used together with a neutron time projection chamber as a directional fast neutron detector. Time of flight system (TOF) based on MRPC technology is widely used in modern physics experiments, and it also plays an important role in particle identification. With the increase of accelerator energy and luminosity, TOF system is required to indentify definite particles precisely under high rate environment. The MRPC technology TOF system can be defined as three generations. The first generation TOF is based on float glass MRPC and its time resolution is around 80ps, but the rate is relatively low (typically lower than 100Hz/cm2). The typical systems are TOF of RHIC-STAR, LHC-ALICE and BES III endcap. For the second generation TOF, its time resolution is in the same order with the first generation, but the rate capability is much higher. Its rate capability can reach 30kHz/cm2. The typical experiment with this high rate TOF is FAIR-CBM. The biggest challenge is on the third generation TOF. For example, the momentum upper limit of K/PI separation is around 7GeV/c for JLab-SoLID TOF system under high particle rate as high as 20kHz/cm2, the time requirement is around 20ps. The readout electronics of first two generations is based on time over threshold method and pulse shape sampling technology will be used in the third generation TOF. In the same time, the machine learning technology is also designed to analysis the time performance. In this paper, we will describe the evolution of MRPC TOF technology and key technology of each generation TOF.

Multi-gap Resistive Plate Chamber(MRPC) is a widely used timing detector with a typical time resolution of about 60 ps. This makes MRPC an optimal choice for the time of flight(ToF) system in many large physics experiments. The prior work on improving the time resolution is mainly focused on altering the detector geometry, and therefore the improvement of the data analysis algorithm has not been fully explored. This paper proposes a new time reconstruction algorithm based on the deep neural networks(NN) and improves the MRPC time resolution by about 10 ps. Since the development of the high energy physics experiments has pushed the timing requirements for the MRPC to a higher level, this algorithm could become a potential substitution of the time over threshold(ToT) method to achieve a time resolution below 30 ps., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Dedicated detector simulations are very important for the success of high energy physics experiments. They not only bring benefits to the optimization of the detectors, but can also improve the precision of the physics results. To design a Multi-gap Resistive Plate Chamber (MRPC) with a very good time resolution, a detailed monte-carlo simulation of the detector is needed and described in this paper. The simulation can produce detector signal waveforms which contain a complete information about the events. The detector performance filled with different gas mixtures is studied, and comparison between simulation and experimental results show a good agreement., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

The China Dark Matter Experiment (CDEX) aims at direct searches of light Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory (CJPL) with an overburden of about 2400m rock. Results from a prototype CDEX-1 994 g p-type Point Contact Germanium(pPCGe) detector are reported. Research programs are pursued to further reduce the physics threshold by improving hardware and data analysis. The CDEX-10 experiment with a pPCGe array of 10 kg target mass range is being tested. We report the first result on Ge-76 neutrinoless double beta decay from CDEX-1 experiment at China Jinping Underground Laboratory. A mass of 994 g p-type point-contact high purity germanium detector has been installed to search the neutrinoless double beta decay events, as well as to directly detect dark matter particles. An exposure of 304 kg*day has been analyzed. The wideband spectrum from 500 keV to 3 MeV was obtained and the average event rate at the 2.039 MeV energy range is about 0.012 count per keV per kg per day. The half-life of Ge-76 neutrinoless double beta decay has been derived based on this result as: T 1/2 > 6.4*10^22 yr (90% C.L.). An upper limit on the effective Majorana-neutrino mass of 5.0 eV has been achieved. Substantial experimental and theoretical efforts worldwide are devoted to explore the phase diagram of strongly interacting matter. At LHC and top RHIC energies, QCD matter is studied at very high temperatures and nearly vanishing net-baryon densities. There is evidence that a Quark-Gluon-Plasma (QGP) was created at experiments at RHIC and LHC. The transition from the QGP back to the hadron gas is found to be a smooth cross over. For larger net-baryon densities and lower temperatures, it is expected that the QCD phase diagram exhibits a rich structure, such as a first-order phase transition between hadronic and partonic matter which terminates in a critical point, or exotic phases like quarkyonic matter. The discovery of these landmarks would be a breakthrough in our understanding of the strong interaction and is therefore in the focus of various high-energy heavy-ion research programs. The Compressed Baryonic Matter (CBM) experiment at FAIR will play a unique role in the exploration of the QCD phase diagram in the region of high net-baryon densities, because it is designed to run at unprecedented interaction rates. High-rate operation is the key prerequisite for high-precision measurements of multi-differential observables and of rare diagnostic probes which are sensitive to the dense phase of the nuclear fireball. The goal of the CBM experiment at SIS100 (sqrt(s_NN) = 2.7 - 4.9 GeV) is to discover fundamental properties of QCD matter: the phase structure at large baryon-chemical potentials (mu_B > 500 MeV), effects of chiral symmetry, and the equation-of-state at high density as it is expected to occur in the core of neutron stars. In the CBM (Compressed Baryonic Matter) experiment constructed at the Facility for Anti-proton and Ion Research (Fair) at GSI, Darmstadt, Germany, MRPC(Multi-gap Resistive Plate Chamber) is adopted to construct the large TOF (Time-of-Flight) system to achieve an unprecedented precision of hadron identification, benefiting from its good time resolution, relatively high efficiency and low building price. We have developed a kind of double-ended readout strip MRPC. It uses low resistive glass to keep good performance of time resolution under high-rate condition. The differential double stack structure of 2x4 gas gaps help to reduce the required high voltage to half. There are 24 strips on one counter, and each is 270mm long, 7mm wide and the interval is 3mm. Ground is placed onto the MRPC electrode and feed through is carefully designed to match the 100 Ohm impedance of PADI electronics. The prototype of this strip MRPC has been tested with cosmic ray, a 98% efficiency and 60ps time resolution is gotten. In order to further examine the performance of the detector working under higher particle flux rate, the prototype has been tested in the 2014 October GSI beam time and 2015 February CERN beam time. In both beam times a relatively high rate of 1 kHz/cm2 was obtained. The calibration is done with CBM ROOT. A couple of corrections has been considered in the calibration and analysis process (including time-walk correction, gain correction, strip alignment correction and velocity correction) to access actual counter performances such as efficiency and time resolution. An efficiency of 97% and time resolution of 48ps are obtained. All these results show that the real-size prototype is fully capable of the requirement of the CBM-TOF, and new designs such as self-sealing are modified into the strip counter prototype to obtain even better performance.

With the constant increase of accelerator luminosity, the rate requirements of the MRPC detectors become important. In the same time, aging problem of the detector has to be studied meticulously. An online aging test system is set up in our Lab. The setup of the system is described and the purpose is to study the performance stability during the long time running under high luminosity environment. The high rate MRPC has been irradiated by X-ray for 36 days and accumulated charge density reached 0.1C/cm2. No obvious performance degradation is observed for the detector.

An event-counting thermal neutron imaging detector based on 3 mol % natGd2O3 doped micro channel plate (MCP) has been developed and tested. Thermal neutron imaging experiment was carried out with a low flux neutron beam. Detection efficiency of 33 % was achieved with only one doped MCP. The spatial resolution of 72 {\mu}m RMS is currently limited by the readout anode. A detector with larger area and improved readout method is now being developed., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures
