LiNbO3 (LN) is renowned for its exceptional ferroelectric properties, particularly its notable linear electro-optical (EO) effect, which is highly advantageous for various applications such as high-speed communication, optical computation, and quantum information processing. Compared to its ferroelectric properties, the magnetism of LN is not attractive enough due to its weak ferromagnetic nature. Theoretical studies suggest that LN may exhibit a novel magnetoelectric coupling via ferroelectrically-induced ferromagnetism. However, this mechanism has not yet been experimentally validated in any materials, presenting significant challenges for research. In this study, we provide the first experimental evidence supporting the mechanism of ferroelectrically-induced ferromagnetism in LN, including observations of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) and magnetoelectric coupling. Additionally, we have identified various multiferroic skyrmions, within which ferroelectric polarization signals are detectable. These signals can be influenced by the magnetic vortex structures, indicating a magnetoelectric coupling nature. Currently, they are the only multiferroic skyrmions that can keep stable at room temperature. Moreover, these magnetic textures significantly affect the ferroelectric properties, as demonstrated by an enhancement of the linear electro-optic effect of LN by over 200%. Given the novel magnetoelectric coupling mechanism, the potential of multiferroic skyrmions in spintronics and advanced data storage, and the extensive use of LN EO modulators, our research has significant implications for condensed matter physics, multiferroic materials, and optoelectronics.

Lithium Niobate (LN) is a ferroelectric material with exceptional electrical characteristics, including high piezoelectricity, high Pockels effect, etc. These properties make it a promising platform for numerous fields such as high-speed communication, optical computation, and quantum information processing. Besides these, the introduction of magnetic structures to LN holds significant potential to achieve magnetoelectric coupling, which can be applied in magnetic memory and data-processing devices with high efficiency. Here, for the first time, we observe a special topological magnetic structure called magnetic skyrmion in LN (SK-LN) by the combination of magnetic field annealing and rapid annealing processes . Compared to the magnetic skyrmions reported in magnetic systems, SK-LN exhibit exceptionally high stability. Additionally, the center of the magnetic vortex exhibits spontaneous ferroelectric polarization, indicating its multiferroic characteristic. With the excitation of these multiferroic skyrmions, the modulation efficiency of the electro-optical (EO) modulator fabricated on thin film lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) wafer was found to be enhanced from 1.98 V*cm to 0.63 V*cm. It is considered that the multiferroic skyrmions significantly enhance the Pockels coefficient of LN to 101 pm/V, nearly three times the result (32pm/V) reported previously.

In this paper, we propose Conceptual Codebook Learning (CoCoLe), a novel fine-tuning method for vision-language models (VLMs) to address the challenge of improving the generalization capability of VLMs while fine-tuning them on downstream tasks in a few-shot setting. We recognize that visual concepts, such as textures, shapes, and colors are naturally transferable across domains and play a crucial role in generalization tasks. Motivated by this interesting finding, we learn a conceptual codebook consisting of visual concepts as keys and conceptual prompts as values, which serves as a link between the image encoder's outputs and the text encoder's inputs. Specifically, for a given image, we leverage the codebook to identify the most relevant conceptual prompts associated with the class embeddings to perform the classification. Additionally, we incorporate a handcrafted concept cache as a regularization to alleviate the overfitting issues in low-shot scenarios. We observe that this conceptual codebook learning method is able to achieve enhanced alignment between visual and linguistic modalities. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that our CoCoLe method remarkably outperforms the existing state-of-the-art methods across various evaluation settings, including base-to-new generalization, cross-dataset evaluation, and domain generalization tasks. Kagome materials exhibit many novel phenomena emerging from the interplay between lattice geometry, electronic structure, and topology. A prime example is the vanadium-based kagome materials AV3Sb5 (A = K, Rb, and Cs) with superconductivity and unconventional charge-density wave (CDW). More interestingly, the substitution of vanadium by chromium further introduces magnetism and enhances the correlation effect in CsCr3Sb5 which likewise exhibits superconductivity under pressure and competing density-wave state. Here we systematically investigate the electronic structure of CsCr3Sb5 using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (APRES) and ab-initio calculations. Overall, the measured electronic structure agrees with the theoretical calculation. Remarkably, Cr 3d orbitals exhibit incoherent electronic states and contribute to incipient flat bands close to the Fermi level. The electronic structure shows a minor change across the magnetic transition at 55 K, suggesting a weak interplay between the local magnetic moment and itinerant electrons. Furthermore, we reveal a drastic enhancement of the electron scattering rate across the magnetic transition, which is relevant to the semiconducting-like transport property of the system at high temperatures. Our results suggest that CsCr3Sb5 is a strongly correlated Hund's metal with incipient flat bands near the Fermi level, which provides an electronic basis for understanding its novel properties in comparison to the non-magnetic and weakly correlated AV3Sb5.

The discovery of drug-target interactions (DTIs) plays a crucial role in pharmaceutical development. The deep learning model achieves more accurate results in DTI prediction due to its ability to extract robust and expressive features from drug and target chemical structures. However, existing deep learning methods typically generate drug features via aggregating molecular atom representations, ignoring the chemical properties carried by motifs, i.e., substructures of the molecular graph. The atom-drug double-level molecular representation learning can not fully exploit structure information and fails to interpret the DTI mechanism from the motif perspective. In addition, sequential model-based target feature extraction either fuses limited contextual information or requires expensive computational resources. To tackle the above issues, we propose a hierarchical graph representation learning-based DTI prediction method (HiGraphDTI). Specifically, HiGraphDTI learns hierarchical drug representations from triple-level molecular graphs to thoroughly exploit chemical information embedded in atoms, motifs, and molecules. Then, an attentional feature fusion module incorporates information from different receptive fields to extract expressive target features.Last, the hierarchical attention mechanism identifies crucial molecular segments, which offers complementary views for interpreting interaction mechanisms. The experiment results not only demonstrate the superiority of HiGraphDTI to the state-of-the-art methods, but also confirm the practical ability of our model in interaction interpretation and new DTI discovery.

The interrelationship between flat bands and correlated phenomena such as unconventional superconductivity stands as an intriguing subject in condensed matter physics. Here, by first-principles calculations and random phase approximation analyses, we investigate the electronic structure, superconducting instability, as well as roles of the incipient flat bands in kagome superconductor CsCr$_3$Sb$_5$. Our calculations reveal strong antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations in CsCr$_3$Sb$_5$, which mediates two sets of spin-singlet superconducting orders with $s_{\pm}$- and ($d_{xy}$, $d_{x^2-y^2}$)-wave symmetries. Under the dominance of local Coulomb interactions, the unoccupied incipient flat bands are shown to be crucial for the momentum dependence of spin fluctuations and thus the superconductivity. Our further analyses unveil a sublattice-momentum-coupling-driven mechanism for this momentum-dependent enhancement of the fluctuations, which provides us a new perspective for future studies of geometrically frustrated systems.

We theoretically propose Ac$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$, La$_2$BaNi$_2$O$_6$F, and La$_2$SrNi$_2$O$_6$F compounds to be benchmark materials for bilayer nickelate superconductivity. The stable phase of Ac$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ and La$_2$BaNi$_2$O$_6$F are found to be $I4/mmm$ without the lattice distortion caused by octahedra rotation at ambient pressure, where as the lattice distortion in La$_2$SrNi$_2$O$_6$F can be suppressed with relatively small external pressure of 4 GPa. The magnetism, electronic structure and spin susceptibilities of Ac$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ are extremely close to those of La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ at 30 GPa. The ground state of La$_2$BaNi$_2$O$_6$F and La$_2$SrNi$_2$O$_6$F are antiferromagnetically coupled checkerboard bilayer with sizable magnetic moment on Ni. In addition, the inter-layer coupling $J_{\perp}$ between Ni-bilayers in La$_2$BaNi$_2$O$_6$F or La$_2$SrNi$_2$O$_6$F is only $\sim$ 1/10 of that in Ac$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ or La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ at 30 GPa. We argue that these compounds may serve as superconducting candidates at ambient pressure and can be employed to testify theoretical proposals for bilayer nickelate superconductivity.

In computational social science, researchers often use a pre-trained, black box classifier to estimate the frequency of each class in unlabeled datasets. A variety of prevalence estimation techniques have been developed in the literature, each yielding an unbiased estimate if certain stability assumption holds. This work introduces a framework to rethink the prevalence estimation process as calibrating the classifier outputs against ground truth labels to obtain the joint distribution of a base dataset and then extrapolating to the joint distribution of a target dataset. We call this framework "Calibrate-Extrapolate". It clarifies what stability assumptions must hold for a prevalence estimation technique to yield accurate estimates. In the calibration phase, the techniques assume only a stable calibration curve between a calibration dataset and the full base dataset. This allows for the classifier outputs to be used for disproportionate random sampling, thus improving the efficiency of calibration. In the extrapolation phase, some techniques assume a stable calibration curve while some assume stable class-conditional densities. We discuss the stability assumptions from a causal perspective. By specifying base and target joint distributions, we can generate simulated datasets, as a way to build intuitions about the impacts of assumption violations. This also leads to a better understanding of how the classifier's predictive power affects the accuracy of prevalence estimates: the greater the predictive power, the lower the sensitivity to violations of stability assumptions in the extrapolation phase. We illustrate the framework with an application that estimates the prevalence of toxic comments on news topics over time on Reddit, Twitter/X, and YouTube, using Jigsaw's Perspective API as a black box classifier. Using first-principles density-functional calculations, we investigate the electronic structure and magnetism of the kagome superconductor CsCr$_3$Sb$_5$. At the ambient pressure, its ground state is found to be $4\times2$ altermagnetic spin-density-wave (SDW) pattern, with an averaged effective moment of $\sim$1.7$\mu_B$ per chromium atom. The magnetic long range order is coupled to the lattice structure, generating 4$a_0$ structural modulation. However, multiple competing SDW phases are present and energetically very close, suggesting strong magnetic fluctuation and frustration. The electronic states near the Fermi level are dominated by Cr-3d orbitals, and flat band or van Hove singularities are away from the Fermi level. When external pressure is applied, the energy differences between competing orders and the structural modulations are suppressed by external pressure. The magnetic fluctuation remains present and important at high pressure because the non-magnetic phase is unstable up to 30 GPa. In addition, a bonding state between Cr-3d$_{xz}$ and Sb$^{\mathrm{II}}$-p$_z$ quickly acquires dispersion and eventually becomes metallic around 5 GPa, leading to a Lifshitz transition. Our findings strongly support unconventional superconductivity in the CsCr$_3$Sb$_5$ compound above 5 GPa, and suggest crucial role of magnetic fluctuations in the pairing mechanism.

Computational social science research has made advances in machine learning and natural language processing that support content moderators in detecting harmful content. These advances often rely on training datasets annotated by crowdworkers for harmful content. In designing instructions for annotation tasks to generate training data for these algorithms, researchers often treat the harm concepts that we train algorithms to detect - 'hateful', 'offensive', 'toxic', 'racist', 'sexist', etc. - as interchangeable. In this work, we studied whether the way that researchers define 'harm' affects annotation outcomes. Using Venn diagrams, information gain comparisons, and content analyses, we reveal that annotators do not use the concepts 'hateful', 'offensive', and 'toxic' interchangeably. We identify that features of harm definitions and annotators' individual characteristics explain much of how annotators use these terms differently. Our results offer empirical evidence discouraging the common practice of using harm concepts interchangeably in content moderation research. Instead, researchers should make specific choices about which harm concepts to analyze based on their research goals. Recognizing that researchers are often resource constrained, we also encourage researchers to provide information to bound their findings when their concepts of interest differ from concepts that off-the-shelf harmful content detection algorithms identify. Biological springs can be used in nature for energy conservation and ultra-fast motion. The loading and unloading rates of elastic materials can play an important role in determining how the properties of these springs affect movements. We investigate the mechanical energy efficiency of biological springs (American bullfrog plantaris tendons and guinea fowl lateral gastrocnemius tendons) and synthetic elastomers. We measure these materials under symmetric rates (equal loading and unloading durations) and asymmetric rates (unequal loading and unloading durations) using novel dynamic mechanical analysis measurements. We find that mechanical efficiency is highest at symmetric rates and significantly decreases with a larger degree of asymmetry. A generalized 1D Maxwell model with no fitting parameters captures the experimental results based on the independently-characterized linear viscoelastic properties of the materials. The model further shows that a broader viscoelastic relaxation spectrum enhances the effect of rate-asymmetry on efficiency. News media is often referred to as the Fourth Estate, a recognition of its political power. New understandings of how media shape political beliefs and influence collective behaviors are urgently needed in an era when public opinion polls do not necessarily reflect election results and users influence each other in real-time under algorithm-mediated content personalization. In this work, we measure not only the average but also the distribution of audience political leanings for different media across different countries. The methodological components of these new measures include a high-fidelity COVID-19 tweet dataset; high-precision user geolocation extraction; and user political leaning estimated from the within-country retweet networks involving local politicians. We focus on geolocated users from eight countries, profile user leaning distribution for each country, and analyze bridging users who have interactions across multiple countries. Except for France and Turkey, we observe consistent bi-modal user leaning distributions in the other six countries, and find that cross-country retweeting behaviors do not oscillate across the partisan divide. More importantly, this study contributes a new set of media bias estimates by averaging the leaning scores of users who share the URLs from media domains. Through two validations, we find that the new average audience leaning scores strongly correlate with existing media bias scores. Lastly, we profile the COVID-19 news consumption by examining the audience leaning distribution for top media in each country, and for selected media across all countries. Those analyses help answer questions such as: Does center media Reuters have a more balanced audience base than partisan media CNN in the US? Does far-right media Breitbart attract any left-leaning readers in any countries? YouTube provides features for users to indicate disinterest when presented with unwanted recommendations, such as the "Not interested" and "Don't recommend channel" buttons. These buttons purportedly allow the user to correct "mistakes" made by the recommendation system. Yet, relatively little is known about the empirical efficacy of these buttons. Neither is much known about users' awareness of and confidence in them. To address these gaps, we simulated YouTube users with sock puppet agents. Each agent first executed a "stain phase", where it watched many videos of an assigned topic; it then executed a "scrub phase", where it tried to remove recommendations from the assigned topic. Each agent repeatedly applied a single scrubbing strategy, either indicating disinterest in one of the videos visited in the stain phase (disliking it or deleting it from the watch history), or indicating disinterest in a video recommended on the homepage (clicking the "not interested" or "don't recommend channel" button or opening the video and clicking the dislike button). We found that the stain phase significantly increased the fraction of the recommended videos dedicated to the assigned topic on the user's homepage. For the scrub phase, using the "Not interested" button worked best, significantly reducing such recommendations in all topics tested, on average removing 88% of them. Neither the stain phase nor the scrub phase, however, had much effect on videopage recommendations. We also ran a survey (N = 300) asking adult YouTube users in the US whether they were aware of and used these buttons before, as well as how effective they found these buttons to be. We found that 44% of participants were not aware that the "Not interested" button existed. At the end of October 2022, Elon Musk concluded his acquisition of Twitter. In the weeks and months before that, several questions were publicly discussed that were not only of interest to the platform's future buyers, but also of high relevance to the Computational Social Science research community. For example, how many active users does the platform have? What percentage of accounts on the site are bots? And, what are the dominating topics and sub-topical spheres on the platform? In a globally coordinated effort of 80 scholars to shed light on these questions, and to offer a dataset that will equip other researchers to do the same, we have collected all 375 million tweets published within a 24-hour time period starting on September 21, 2022. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first complete 24-hour Twitter dataset that is available for the research community. With it, the present work aims to accomplish two goals. First, we seek to answer the aforementioned questions and provide descriptive metrics about Twitter that can serve as references for other researchers. Second, we create a baseline dataset for future research that can be used to study the potential impact of the platform's ownership change.

The ideological asymmetries have been recently observed in contested online spaces, where conservative voices seem to be relatively more pronounced even though liberals are known to have the population advantage on digital platforms. Most prior research, however, focused on either one single platform or one single political topic. Whether an ideological group garners more attention across platforms and/or topics, and how the attention dynamics evolve over time, have not been explored. In this work, we present a quantitative study that links collective attention across two social platforms -- YouTube and Twitter, centered on online activities surrounding popular videos of three controversial political topics including Abortion, Gun control, and Black Lives Matter over 16 months. We propose several sets of video-centric metrics to characterize how online attention is accumulated for different ideological groups. We find that neither side is on a winning streak: left-leaning videos are overall more viewed, more engaging, but less tweeted than right-leaning videos. The attention time series unfold quicker for left-leaning videos, but span a longer time for right-leaning videos. Network analysis on the early adopters and tweet cascades show that the information diffusion for left-leaning videos tends to involve centralized actors; while that for right-leaning videos starts earlier in the attention lifecycle. We investigated the coexistence of superconductivity and antiferromagnetic order in the compound Er$_{2}$O$_{2}$Bi with anti-ThCr$_{2}$Si$_{2}$-type structure through resistivity, magnetization, specific heat measurements and first-principle calculations. The superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$ of 1.23 K and antiferromagnetic transition temperature $T_{\rm N}$ of 3 K are observed in the sample with the best nominal composition. The superconducting upper critical field $H_{\rm c2}$(0) and electron-phonon coupling constant $\lambda$$_{e-ph}$ in Er$_{2}$O$_{2}$Bi are similar to those in the previously reported non-magnetic superconductor Y$_{2}$O$_{2}$Bi with the same structure, indicating that the superconductivity in Er$_{2}$O$_{2}$Bi may have the same origin as in Y$_{2}$O$_{2}$Bi. The first-principle calculations of Er$_{2}$O$_{2}$Bi show that the Fermi surface is mainly composed of the Bi 6$p$ orbitals both in the paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic state, implying minor effect of the 4$f$ electrons on the Fermi surface. Besides, upon increasing the oxygen incorporation in Er$_{2}$O$_{x}$Bi, $T_{\rm c}$ increases from 1 to 1.23 K and $T_{\rm N}$ decreases slightly from 3 to 2.96 K, revealing that superconductivity and antiferromagnetic order may compete with each other. The Hall effect measurements indicate that hole-type carrier density indeed increases with increasing oxygen content, which may account for the variations of $T_{\rm c}$ and $T_{\rm N}$ with different oxygen content.

Superconductivity frequently appears by doping compounds that show a collective phase transition. So far, however, this has not been observed in topological materials. Here we report the discovery of superconductivity induced by Ga doping in orthorhombic Re$_{3}$Ge$_{7}$, which undergoes a second-order metal-insulator-like transition at $\sim$58 K and is predicted to have a nontrivial band topology. It is found that the substitution of Ga for Ge leads to hole doping in Re$_{3}$Ge$_{7-x}$Ga$_{x}$. As a consequence, the phase transition is gradually suppressed and disappears above $x$ = 0.2. At this $x$ value, superconductivity emerges and $T_{\rm c}$ exhibits a dome-like doping dependence with a maximum value of 3.37 K at $x$ = 0.25. First-principles calculations suggest that the phase transition in Re$_{3}$Ge$_{7}$ is associated with an electronic instability driven by Fermi surface nesting and the nontrival band topology is preserved after Ga doping. Our results indicate that Ga-doped Re$_{3}$Ge$_{7}$ provides a rare opportunity to study the interplay between superconductivity and competing electronic states in a topologically nontrivial system., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

We present the first large-scale measurement study of cross-partisan discussions between liberals and conservatives on YouTube, based on a dataset of 274,241 political videos from 973 channels of US partisan media and 134M comments from 9.3M users over eight months in 2020. Contrary to a simple narrative of echo chambers, we find a surprising amount of cross-talk: most users with at least 10 comments posted at least once on both left-leaning and right-leaning YouTube channels. Cross-talk, however, was not symmetric. Based on the user leaning predicted by a hierarchical attention model, we find that conservatives were much more likely to comment on left-leaning videos than liberals on right-leaning videos. Secondly, YouTube's comment sorting algorithm made cross-partisan comments modestly less visible; for example, comments from conservatives made up 26.3% of all comments on left-leaning videos but just over 20% of the comments were in the top 20 positions. Lastly, using Perspective API's toxicity score as a measure of quality, we find that conservatives were not significantly more toxic than liberals when users directly commented on the content of videos. However, when users replied to comments from other users, we find that cross-partisan replies were more toxic than co-partisan replies on both left-leaning and right-leaning videos, with cross-partisan replies being especially toxic on the replier's home turf., Comment: Accepted into ICWSM 2021, the code and datasets are publicly available at https://github.com/avalanchesiqi/youtube-crosstalk

The collective attention on online items such as web pages, search terms, and videos reflects trends that are of social, cultural, and economic interest. Moreover, attention trends of different items exhibit mutual influence via mechanisms such as hyperlinks or recommendations. Many visualisation tools exist for time series, network evolution, or network influence; however, few systems connect all three. In this work, we present AttentionFlow, a new system to visualise networks of time series and the dynamic influence they have on one another. Centred around an ego node, our system simultaneously presents the time series on each node using two visual encodings: a tree ring for an overview and a line chart for details. AttentionFlow supports interactions such as overlaying time series of influence and filtering neighbours by time or flux. We demonstrate AttentionFlow using two real-world datasets, VevoMusic and WikiTraffic. We show that attention spikes in songs can be explained by external events such as major awards, or changes in the network such as the release of a new song. Separate case studies also demonstrate how an artist's influence changes over their career, and that correlated Wikipedia traffic is driven by cultural interests. More broadly, AttentionFlow can be generalised to visualise networks of time series on physical infrastructures such as road networks, or natural phenomena such as weather and geological measurements., Comment: Published in WSDM 2021. Chemical doping of topological materials may provide a possible route for realizing topological superconductivity. However, all such cases known so far are based on chalcogenides. Here we report the discovery of superconductivity induced by Re doping in the topological semimetal Mo$_{5}$Si$_{3}$ with a tetragonal structure. Partial substitution of Re for Mo in Mo$_{5-x}$Re$_{x}$Si$_{3}$ results in an anisotropic shrinkage of the unit cell up to the solubility limit of approximately $x$ = 2. Over a wide doping range (0.5 $\leq$ $x$ $\leq$ 2), these silicides are found to be weakly coupled superconductors with a fully isotropic gap. $T_{\rm c}$ increases monotonically with $x$ from 1.67 K to 5.78 K, the latter of which is the highest among superconductors of the same structural type. This trend in $T_{\rm c}$ correlates well with the variation of the number of valence electrons, and is mainly ascribed to the enhancement of electron-phonon coupling. In addition, band structure calculations reveal that superconducting Mo$_{5-x}$Re$_{x}$Si$_{3}$ exhibits nontrivial band topology characterized by $Z_{2}$ invariants (1;000) or (1;111) depending on the Re doping level. Single crystals of NbGe$_{2}$ which crystallize in a noncentrosymmetric hexagonal structure with chirality are synthesized and their superconductivity is investigated. Type-I superconductivity is confirmed by dc magnetization, field-induced second-to first-order phase transition in specific heat, and a small Ginzburg-Landau parameter $\kappa_{GL}=0.12$. The isothermal magnetization measurements show that there is a crossover from type-I to type-II/1 superconductivity with decreasing temperature and an unusually enhanced surface superconducting critical field ($H_{c3}$) is discovered. The band structure calculations indicate the presence of Kramer-Weyl nodes near the Fermi level. Social media is a vital means for information-sharing due to its easy access, low cost, and fast dissemination characteristics. However, increases in social media usage have corresponded with a rise in the prevalence of cyberbullying. Most existing cyberbullying detection methods are supervised and, thus, have two key drawbacks: (1) The data labeling process is often time-consuming and labor-intensive; (2) Current labeling guidelines may not be generalized to future instances because of different language usage and evolving social networks. To address these limitations, this work introduces a principled approach for unsupervised cyberbullying detection. The proposed model consists of two main components: (1) A representation learning network that encodes the social media session by exploiting multi-modal features, e.g., text, network, and time. (2) A multi-task learning network that simultaneously fits the comment inter-arrival times and estimates the bullying likelihood based on a Gaussian Mixture Model. The proposed model jointly optimizes the parameters of both components to overcome the shortcomings of decoupled training. A comprehensive understanding of data quality is the cornerstone of measurement studies in social media research. This paper presents in-depth measurements on the effects of Twitter data sampling across different timescales and different subjects (entities, networks, and cascades). By constructing complete tweet streams, we show that Twitter rate limit message is an accurate indicator for the volume of missing tweets. Sampling also differs significantly across timescales. While the hourly sampling rate is influenced by the diurnal rhythm in different time zones, the millisecond level sampling is heavily affected by the implementation choices. For Twitter entities such as users, we find the Bernoulli process with a uniform rate approximates the empirical distributions well. It also allows us to estimate the true ranking with the observed sample data. For networks on Twitter, their structures are altered significantly and some components are more likely to be preserved. For retweet cascades, we observe changes in distributions of tweet inter-arrival time and user influence, which will affect models that rely on these features. We report the superconducting properties of new hexagonal Nb$_{10+2x}$Mo$_{35-x}$Ru$_{35-x}$Rh$_{10}$Pd$_{10}$ high-entropy alloys (HEAs) (0 $\leq$ $x$ $\leq$ 5). With increasing $x$, the superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$ shows a maximum of 6.19 K at $x$ = 2.5, while the zero-temperature upper critical field $B_{\rm c2}$(0) increases monotonically, reaching 8.3 T at $x$ = 5. For all $x$ values, the specific heat jump deviates from the Bardeen-Cooper-Schreiffer behavior. In addition, we show that $T_{\rm c}$ of these HEAs is not determined mainly by the density of states at the Fermi level and would be enhanced by lowering the valence electron concentration.

High-entropy alloys (HEAs) are at the focus of current research for their diverse properties, including superconductivity and structural polymorphism. However, the polymorphic transition has been observed only in nonsuperconducting HEAs and mostly under high pressure. Here we report the discovery of superconductivity and temperature-driven polymorphism in the (V$_{0.5}$Nb$_{0.5}$)$_{3-x}$Mo$_{x}$Al$_{0.5}$Ga$_{0.5}$ (0.2 $\leq$ $x$ $\leq$ 1.4) HEAs. It is found that the as-cast HEA is of a single body-centered cubic (bcc) structure for $x$ = 0.2 and a mixture of the bcc and A15 structures for higher $x$ values. Upon annealing, the bcc structure undergoes a polymorphic transformation to the A15 one and all HEAs exhibits bulk superconductivity. For $x$ = 0.2, whereas the bcc polymorph is not superconducting down to 1.8 K, the A15 polymorph has a superconducting transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$ of 10.2 K and an estimated zero-temperature upper critical field $B_{\rm c2}$(0) of 20.1 T, both of which are the highest among HEA superconductors. With increasing Mo content $x$, both $T_{\rm c}$ and $B_{\rm c2}$(0) of the A15-type HEAs decrease, yet the large ratio of $B_{\rm c2}$(0)/$T_{\rm c}$ signifies a disorder-induced enhancement of the upper critical field over a wide $x$ range. The decrease in $T_{\rm c}$ is attributed to the decrease in both the electronic specific-heat coefficient and electron-phonon coupling strength. Furthermore, the valence electron count dependence of $T_{\rm c}$, which is different from both the binary A15 and other structurally different HEA superconductors, suggests that $T_{\rm c}$ may be increased further by reducing the number of valence electrons. Online videos have shown tremendous increase in Internet traffic. Most video hosting sites implement recommender systems, which connect the videos into a directed network and conceptually act as a source of pathways for users to navigate. At present, little is known about how human attention is allocated over such large-scale networks, and about the impacts of the recommender systems. In this paper, we first construct the Vevo network -- a YouTube video network with 60,740 music videos interconnected by the recommendation links, and we collect their associated viewing dynamics. This results in a total of 310 million views every day over a period of 9 weeks. Next, we present large-scale measurements that connect the structure of the recommendation network and the video attention dynamics. We use the bow-tie structure to characterize the Vevo network and we find that its core component (23.1% of the videos), which occupies most of the attention (82.6% of the views), is made out of videos that are mainly recommended among themselves. This is indicative of the links between video recommendation and the inequality of attention allocation. Finally, we address the task of estimating the attention flow in the video recommendation network. We propose a model that accounts for the network effects for predicting video popularity, and we show it consistently outperforms the baselines. This model also identifies a group of artists gaining attention because of the recommendation network. We study the problem of globally recovering a dictionary from a set of signals via $\ell_1$-minimization. We assume that the signals are generated as i.i.d. random linear combinations of the $K$ atoms from a complete reference dictionary $D^*\in \mathbb R^{K\times K}$, where the linear combination coefficients are from either a Bernoulli type model or exact sparse model. First, we obtain a necessary and sufficient norm condition for the reference dictionary $D^*$ to be a sharp local minimum of the expected $\ell_1$ objective function. Our result substantially extends that of Wu and Yu (2015) and allows the combination coefficient to be non-negative. Secondly, we obtain an explicit bound on the region within which the objective value of the reference dictionary is minimal. Thirdly, we show that the reference dictionary is the unique sharp local minimum, thus establishing the first known global property of $\ell_1$-minimization dictionary learning. Motivated by the theoretical results, we introduce a perturbation-based test to determine whether a dictionary is a sharp local minimum of the objective function. In addition, we also propose a new dictionary learning algorithm based on Block Coordinate Descent, called DL-BCD, which is guaranteed to have monotonic convergence. Simulation studies show that DL-BCD has competitive performance in terms of recovery rate compared to many state-of-the-art dictionary learning algorithms.

What makes content go viral? Which videos become popular and why others don't? Such questions have elicited significant attention from both researchers and industry, particularly in the context of online media. A range of models have been recently proposed to explain and predict popularity; however, there is a short supply of practical tools, accessible for regular users, that leverage these theoretical results. HIPie -- an interactive visualization system -- is created to fill this gap, by enabling users to reason about the virality and the popularity of online videos. It retrieves the metadata and the past popularity series of Youtube videos, it employs Hawkes Intensity Process, a state-of-the-art online popularity model for explaining and predicting video popularity, and it presents videos comparatively in a series of interactive plots. This system will help both content consumers and content producers in a range of data-driven inquiries, such as to comparatively analyze videos and channels, to explain and predict future popularity, to identify viral videos, and to estimate response to online promotion., Comment: 4 pages

The share of videos in the internet traffic has been growing, therefore understanding how videos capture attention on a global scale is also of growing importance. Most current research focus on modeling the number of views, but we argue that video engagement, or time spent watching is a more appropriate measure for resource allocation problems in attention, networking, and promotion activities. In this paper, we present a first large-scale measurement of video-level aggregate engagement from publicly available data streams, on a collection of 5.3 million YouTube videos published over two months in 2016. We study a set of metrics including time and the average percentage of a video watched. We define a new metric, relative engagement, that is calibrated against video properties and strongly correlate with recognized notions of quality. Moreover, we find that engagement measures of a video are stable over time, thus separating the concerns for modeling engagement and those for popularity -- the latter is known to be unstable over time and driven by external promotions. We also find engagement metrics predictable from a cold-start setup, having most of its variance explained by video context, topics and channel information -- R2=0.77. We study the theoretical properties of learning a dictionary from $N$ signals $\mathbf x_i\in \mathbb R^K$ for $i=1,...,N$ via $l_1$-minimization. We assume that $\mathbf x_i$'s are $i.i.d.$ random linear combinations of the $K$ columns from a complete (i.e., square and invertible) reference dictionary $\mathbf D_0 \in \mathbb R^{K\times K}$. Here, the random linear coefficients are generated from either the $s$-sparse Gaussian model or the Bernoulli-Gaussian model. First, for the population case, we establish a sufficient and almost necessary condition for the reference dictionary $\mathbf D_0$ to be locally identifiable, i.e., a local minimum of the expected $l_1$-norm objective function. Our condition covers both sparse and dense cases of the random linear coefficients and significantly improves the sufficient condition by Gribonval and Schnass (2010). In addition, we show that for a complete $\mu$-coherent reference dictionary, i.e., a dictionary with absolute pairwise column inner-product at most $\mu\in[0,1)$, local identifiability holds even when the random linear coefficient vector has up to $O(\mu^{-2})$ nonzeros on average. Moreover, our local identifiability results also translate to the finite sample case with high probability provided that the number of signals $N$ scales as $O(K\log K)$.
