Usutu virus (USUV) is a mosquito-borne flavivirus originating from Africa, that belongs to the Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) complex. In nature, USUV involves Culex spp. mosquitoes acting as vectors and birds as amplifying hosts. The virus has recently spread in Europe and is considered an emerging human pathogen. This is the first research study performed in Greece revealing the presence and circulation of USUV in Culex spp. mosquito populations. Out of the 1,500 mosquito pools tested with real-time RT-PCR, four (Roesch et al., 2019) were positive for USUV. All four pools were collected from the region of Central Macedonia, Northern Greece. • We analyse the characteristics of Chongqing's first local dengue outbreak. • Dengue virus' evolutionary dynamics and phylogenetic relationship were explored. • Dengue fever's epidemic trend during the COVID-19 pandemic was analysed. • Dengue fever's epidemiological distribution during 2013–2022 was explored. Dengue fever is a viral illness, mainly transmitted by Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. With climate change and urbanisation, more urbanised areas are becoming suitable for the survival and reproduction of dengue vector, consequently are becoming suitable for dengue transmission in China. Chongqing, a metropolis in southwestern China, has recently been hit by imported and local dengue fever, experiencing its first local outbreak in 2019. However, the genetic evolution dynamics of dengue viruses and the spatiotemporal patterns of imported and local dengue cases have not yet been elucidated. Hence, this study implemented phylogenetic analyses using genomic data of dengue viruses in 2019 and 2023 and a spatiotemporal analysis of dengue cases collected from 2013 to 2022. We sequenced a total of 15 nucleotide sequences of E genes. The dengue viruses formed separate clusters and were genetically related to those from Guangdong Province, China, and countries in Southeast Asia, including Laos, Thailand, Myanmar and Cambodia. Chongqing experienced a dengue outbreak in 2019 when 168 imported and 1,243 local cases were reported, mainly in September and October. Few cases were reported in 2013–2018, and only six were imported from 2020 to 2022 due to the COVID-19 lockdowns. Our findings suggest that dengue prevention in Chongqing should focus on domestic and overseas population mobility, especially in the Yubei and Wanzhou districts, where airports and railway stations are located, and the period between August and October when dengue outbreaks occur in endemic regions. Moreover, continuous vector monitoring should be implemented, especially during August–October, which would be useful for controlling the Aedes mosquitoes. • Geographical distribution of 22 sand fly species in leishmaniasis endemic areas of Mexico is updated, as well as altitudinal and bioclimatic patterns of their distribution are identified. • We recorded sand fly species for the first time in the states of Morelos (3); Oaxaca (7) and Tabasco (1), Mexico. • The 82 % of sand fly specimens collected are distributed in areas with altitudinal ranges between 1 and 540 m.a.s.l. • In a PCA of Worldclim variables, 72 % of variation of sand fly species distribution is correlated with temperature of coldest month and precipitation of wettest quarter. • Sand fly species Psathyromyia shannoni, Psathyromyia carpenteri, Lutzomyia cruciata , and Lutzomyia longipalpis displayed the greatest variability regarding altitudinal ranges and climatic variables. This study updates knowledge on historical geographic distribution of sand fly species through identifying altitudinal and bioclimatic patterns in leishmaniasis endemic areas in Mexico. We analyze and identify sand fly specimens obtained through national efforts by the Instituto de Diagnóstico y Referencia Epidemiológicos (InDRE, Mexico), collected between 1995 and 2001, 2008–2012, and 2017–2023, and add bibliographic information (427 additional records). After a principal components analysis of WorldClim variables and altitudinal ranges, variables that better explain the distribution of sand fly species were chosen (BIO6, BIO12, and BIO16, explaining 72 % of variation). A total of 1,187 specimens of 22 species were retrieved from eight states, providing 29 new municipalities and 48 new localities, being Lutzomyia cruciata, Micropygomyia chiapanensis , and Psathyromyia shannoni the most common species. We presented new historical records of distribution for sand fly species from Morelos (3), Oaxaca (7) and Tabasco (1). The 82.7 % of sand fly species analyzed were distributed in areas with altitudinal ranges below 420 m. The anthropophilic species Psathyromyia shannoni , and Lutzomyia cruciata showed the greatest variability regarding altitudinal range, and climatic preferences, while several wild species showed abiotic preferences. It is likely that the effect of urbanization and climate change generate new beneficial biotopes for the proliferation of the vector sand fly species. Complementary studies that consider seasonality, vegetation types, and change in land use could provide new information to better understand the spread of vector-borne diseases. This research offers a comprehensive exploration of the microbial communities associated with vector mosquitoes from South Korea. Aedes albopictus, Anopheles sinensis, and Culex molestus are vectors of pathogens, and understanding the intricacies of their microbiome profile is paramount for unraveling their roles in disease transmission dynamics. In this study, we characterized the microbiome of the midguts of adult female vector mosquitoes collected from different locations in South Korea. After DNA extraction from dissected mosquito midguts, we used the Illumina MiSeq next-generation sequencing to obtain sequences spanning the V4 hypervariable region of the bacteria 16S rRNA. Morphological and molecular characterization using 506-bp mitochondrial 16S rRNA was used to identify the mosquito species before amplicon sequencing. Across the three vector mosquitoes surveyed, 21 bacteria genera belonging to 20 families and 5 phyla were discovered. Proteobacteria and Bacteriodota were the major phyla of bacteria associated with the three mosquito species. There were significant differences in the gut microbiome genera composition between the species and little variation in the gut microbiome between individuals of the same mosquito species. Wolbachia is the most dominant genus in Aedes while Aeromonas, Acinetobacter, and unassigned taxa are the most common in An. sinensis. In addition to that, Chromobacterium, Chryseobacterium, and Aeromonas are dominant in Cx. molestus. This study sheds light on the complex interactions between mosquitoes and their microbiome, revealing potential implications for vector competence, disease transmission, and vector control strategies. • Genetic diversity of three human-biting black fly species was examined. • DNA barcoding sequences indicate cryptic diversity in these human-biting black flies. • New records for human-biting black fly species in Thailand were revealed based on DNA barcode. Black flies (Simuliidae) are important biting insects and vectors of diseases agents of humans and livestock. Thus, understanding the taxonomy and biodiversity of these insects is crucial for control and management of these diseases. In this study, we used mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I sequences to examine genetic diversity of three human-biting and possible vector black fly taxa; the Simulium asakoae species-complex, S. chamlongi and S. nigrogilvum. High levels of genetic diversity (>3.5% intraspecific genetic divergence) were found in all three taxa. Phylogenetic analyses indicated that the S. asakoae complex can be divided into seven groups with the largest group consisting of specimens from Thailand, Malaysia and Myanmar. This group most likely represents true S. asakoae. The remaining haplotypes formed groups with conspecific haplotypes or with other closely related species. Among these groups, one including S. monglaense and another including S. myanmarense suggest that certain specimens identified as S. asakoae most likely belong to those species. Therefore, they constitute new locality records for Thailand and also represent new records of anthropophily. Members of S. chamlongi are not monophyletic as its clade also included S. hackeri. A median joining network revealed strong geographic associations of the haplotypes of S. nigrogilvum suggesting limitation of gene flow. Abstract Simulium (Gomphostilbia) aziruni Takaoka, Hashim & Chen was described initially based only on a pupa and a mature larva collected from Peninsular Malaysia. Herein, we describe the morphological characters of the female of S. aziruni for the first time. It resembles those of the other members of the Simulium gombakense species-group by the genital fork with a distinct projection directed medioposteriorly from each arm and claw with a large basal tooth. Cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) barcoding analysis indicates that S. aziruni is the sister species of S. maleewongae , but both are distantly separated by a genetic distance of 4.9%. • The diet of T. cruzi -infected and uninfected Mepraia spinolai was assessed by NGS. • The diet included human and associated vertebrates regardless of triatomine infection status. • Infected triatomines fed more on humans and livestock when living nearer settlements. • The diet shows the potential T. cruzi -infected hosts in domestic/peridomestic habitat. The proximity between infectious disease vector populations and human settlements, and the infection prevalence of vector populations can determine the rate of encounters between vectors and humans and hence infection risk. The diet of sylvatic triatomine vectors (kissing bugs) provides evidence about the host species involved in the maintenance of the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi , the etiological agent of Chagas disease. Here, we characterized the diet of the Chilean endemic triatomine Mepraia spinolai using Next Generation Sequencing (NGS), and evaluated the relation between T. cruzi infection status and proximity to human settlements, with the proportion of human and human-associated (domestic and synanthropic) vertebrates in the diet. We sampled 28 M. spinolai populations, covering a latitudinal range of ∼800 km in Chile. For each population, genomic DNA was obtained from M. spinolai intestinal content. We assessed T. cruzi infection individually, and sequenced vertebrate cytochrome b to characterize the diet from infected and uninfected pooled samples. Human and human-associated animals were present in the diet of both T. cruzi- infected (13.50 %) and uninfected (10.43 %) kissing bugs. The proportion of human and human-associated vertebrates in the diet of infected M. spinolai was negatively associated with the distance from surrounding human settlements, but no relationship was detected for uninfected kissing bugs. This pattern could be related to alterations of kissing bug feeding behavior when infected by the protozoan. Our results highlight the relevance of developing a deeper knowledge of the wild transmission cycle of T. cruzi , thus advancing in the surveillance of vectors present in the natural environment near human settlements. The presence of humans and associated vertebrates in the diet of infected sylvatic triatomines shows the potential hosts involved in T. cruzi transmission in domestic/peridomestic habitats. Globally, malaria remains one of the most important vector-borne diseases despite the extensive use of vector control, including indoor residual spraying (IRS) and insecticide-treated nets (ITNs). These control methods target endophagic vectors, whereas some malaria vectors, such as Anopheles arabiensis , preferentially feed outdoors on cattle, making it a complicated vector to control using conventional strategies. Our study evaluated whether treating cattle with a capsule containing the active ingredient (AI) fipronil could reduce vector density and sporozoite rates, and alter blood feeding behavior, when applied in a small-scale field study. A pilot field study was carried out in the Samia District, Western Kenya, from May to July 2015. Four plots, each comprised of 50 huts used for sleeping, were randomly designated to serve as control or treatment. A week before cattle treatment, baseline mosquito collections were performed inside the houses using mechanical aspirators. Animals in the treatment (and buffer) were administered a single oral application of fipronil at ∼0.5 mg/kg of body weight. Indoor mosquito collections were performed once a week for four weeks following treatment. Female mosquitoes were first identified morphologically to species complex, followed by PCR-based methods to obtain species identity, sporozoite presence, and the host source of the blood meal. All three species of anophelines found in the study area ( An. gambiae s.s., An. arabiensis , An. funestus s.s.) were actively transmitting Plasmodium falciparum during the study period. The indoor resting density of An. arabiensis was significantly reduced in treatment plot one at three weeks post-treatment (T1) (efficacy = 89%; T1 density = 0.08, 95% credibility intervals [0.05, 0.10]; control plot density = 0.78 [0.22, 0.29]) and at four weeks post-treatment (efficacy = 64%; T1 density = 0.16 [0.08, 0.14]; control plot density = 0.48 [0.17, 0.22]). The reduction of An. arabiensis mosquitoes captured in the treatment plot two was higher: zero females were collected after treatment. The indoor resting density of An. gambiae s.s. was not significantly different between the treatment (T1, T2) and their corresponding control plots (C1, C2). An. funestus s.s. showed an increase in density over time. The results of this preliminary study suggest that treating cattle orally with fipronil, to target exophagic and zoophagic malaria vectors, could be a valuable control strategy to supplement existing vector control interventions which target endophilic anthropophilic species. Vector-borne diseases are among major health constraints of small ruminant in Ethiopia. While various studies on single vector-borne diseases or presence of vectors have been conducted, no summarized evidence is available on the occurrence of these diseases and the related vectors. This systematic literature review provides a comprehensive summary on major vectors and vector-borne diseases in small ruminants in Ethiopia. Search for published and unpublished literature was conducted between 8th of January and 25th of June 2015. The search was both manual and electronic. The databases used in electronic search were PubMed, Web of Science, CAB Direct and AJOL. For most of the vector-borne diseases, the summary was limited to narrative synthesis due to lack of sufficient data. Meta-analysis was computed for trypanosomosis and dermatophilosis while meta-regression and sensitivity analysis was done only for trypanososmosis due to lack of sufficient reports on dermatophilosis. Owing emphasis to their vector role, ticks and flies were summarized narratively at genera/species level. In line with inclusion criteria, out of 106 initially identified research reports 43 peer-reviewed articles passed the quality assessment. Data on 7 vector-borne diseases were extracted at species and region level from each source. Accordingly, the pooled prevalence estimate of trypanosomosis was 3.7% with 95% confidence interval (CI) 2.8, 4.9), while that of dermatophilosis was 3.1% (95% CI: 1.6, 6.0). The in-between study variance noted for trypanosomosis was statistically significant (p < 0.05). Among the three covariates considered for meta-regression, only one (species) fitted the final model significantly (p < 0.05) and explained 65.44% of the between studies variance (R 2 ). The prevalence in sheep (5.5%) increased nearly by 34% compared to goats (2.9%). The parasitic presence in blood was documented for babesiosis (3.7% in goats); and anaplasmosis (3.9% in sheep). Serological evidence was retrieved for bluetongue ranging from 34.1% to 46.67% in sheep, and coxiellosis was 10.4% in goats. There was also molecular evidence on the presence of theileriosis in sheep (93%, n = 160) and goats (1.9%, n = 265). Regarding vectors of veterinary importance, 14 species of ticks in five genera, four species of Glossina and 4 genera of biting flies were reported. Despite the evidence on presence of various vectors including ticks, flies, mosquitoes and midges, studies on vector-borne diseases in Ethiopia are surprisingly rare, especially considering risks related to climate change, which is likely to affect distribution of vectors. Cutaneous leishmaniasis is one of many dangerous parasitic diseases. It remains a serious public health problem not only in Souf oasis, but also in Algeria and all developing countries. The results of our thirteen-year study shows a recording of 4813 confirmed cases of cutaneous leishmaniasis and the details shows that this disease affects all municipalities and all age groups, from infants to elderly, but the most affected ones are teenagers aging (10–19) years with 1512 cases (31.41%) and infants less than 9 years old with 1237 cases (25.70%). In addition, males are more prone to this disease than females (65% and 35% respectively). Among the 18 municipalities in the Souf , the most affected were El-Oued with 1171 cases (24.33%) followed by Guemar with 997 cases (20.71%). Furthermore, more than 40.03% of all cases (1927 cases), were record just in one year in 2010. A parallel, this study shows that the original factors of the studied area, such as climatological, agricultural and environmental factors, was the reason do not apparition this epidemic for a long time, but the changes in these conditions, resulting from various human activities create new environmental conditions, which help with the emergence and spread of leishmaniasis disease. The effective fight against this disease should be based on the elimination of the vectors and reservoirs populations, by the overall improvement of sanitary conditions and hygiene, extensive research in epidemiology of leishmaniasis could also reduce the incidence of cutaneous leishmaniasis. Background China experienced an unprecedented outbreak of dengue fever in 2014, the National Health and Family Planning Commission of the People’s Republic of China (NHFPC) carried out a series of supervision work on integrated vector management (IVM), and Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC) conducted a rapid detection on vector density in some areas with high dengue incidence. The goal of this study was to explain the effect of these actions, which play an important role for dengue control, and we wish to give a good example for dengue control in China, even in the world. Methods Compare mosquito vector density with Breteau Index (BI) and dengue incidence after or along with control work vs. before. Data was entered and analyzed by Microsoft Excel 2007 and SPSS19.0. Results Average value of BI from 22.82 in September dropped to 3.93 along with supervision and rapid detection. BI showed a significant decrease (paired sample t -test, t = 3.061, P = 0.018 ≺ 0.05). Dengue incidence decreased gradually along with supervision and rapid detection. Conclusions Supervised work on IVM by NHFPC and the rapid detection on dengue vector Aedes by China CDC promoted to cut down the dengue vector density, then reduced dengue incidence; both played an important role for dengue control throughout China in 2014. • The first report on the presence of L. fortisetosa in Eld's deer in Thailand. • T. capreoli and T. cervi were detected in these insects through molecular analysis. • L. fortisetosa may serve as a vector of Theileria in the Eld's deers of Thailand. Eld's deer (Rucervus eldii thamin) is an endangered species endemic to South Asia. Various ectoparasites (hematophagous insects and ticks) and blood parasites (e.g., piroplasms such as Babesia and Theileria) have been reported in this deer. Deer keds of the genus Lipoptena (L.) are wingless hematophagous insects acting as ectoparasites and potential vectors, thereby transmitting diseases to animals and humans. Many Lipoptena species have been reported, including L. fortisetosa ; the latter may be a potential vector of several pathogens such as Babesia spp. and Theileria spp. However, the available data regarding Lipoptena in domestic animals and wildlife in Thailand is limited. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of L. fortisetosa in Eld's deer as well as the role of this insect as a disease vector in Thailand by employing molecular analysis. A total of 91 wingless insects were collected and morphologically identified as L. fortisetosa. A partial fragment of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene (COI) was amplified and successfully sequenced from twelve insects, and the COI nucleotide Basic Local Alignment Search Tool results revealed a 94.28%−94.45% identity to L. fortisetosa (accession number: OL850869/China). The undertaken phylogenetic analysis revealed that the L. fortisetosa samples from Thailand belong to a clade that is distinct from the previously deposited (in GenBank®) L. fortisetosa. As far as the pathogen detection is concerned, 46.2% (42/91) of the deer keds were positive for Theileria , while no Lipoptena was found to be positive for Babesia. Twenty-one sequences of Theileria were obtained and exhibited a 98.84%−100% identity to the Theileria sp. from several hosts. The phylogenetic analysis of Theileria revealed that Theileria capreoli and Theileria cervi were present in our L. fortisetosa samples. It can be implied that L. fortisetosa may serve as a vector of Theileria spp. in the Eld's deers of Thailand. We believe that the particular open zoo (from where the sampling took place) should implement preventive and control strategies for deer keds, other vectors, and vector-borne diseases. • The prevalence of Babesia pathogens in ticks in the UK was assessed. • Five out of 24 cattle farms had Ixodes ricinus ticks positive for Babesia divergens. • Babesia canis may not yet be prevalent in D. reticulatus tick populations in the UK. • Two field sites with grazing equines had D. reticulatus that were positive for B. caballi. • There is a need to raise awareness of the risk of equine piroplasmosis in the UK. The emergence of Babesia pathogens novel to the UK is of growing concern; these include Babesia canis and Babesia caballi. However, a better understanding of changes in the prevalence of endemic Babesia species such as Babesia venatorum and Babesia divergens is also of importance. Here, the prevalence of Babesia pathogens in both Dermacentor reticulatus and Ixodes ricinus ticks was assessed. Dermacentor reticulatus were collected from six sites known to harbour populations of this species in west Wales and southern England. DNA was extracted from 879 individual ticks and subjected to PCR and sequence analysis. Seven Babesia species were detected in 7.5% of the ticks, including B. caballi (0.68%), B. bovis (1.7%), B. microti (1.02%), B. bigemina (0.34%), B. capreoli (0.34%), and one isolate of B. canis (0.34%). Two of the field sites with grazing equines present had ticks that were positive for B. caballi. For I. ricinus , up to 200 nymphs were collected from each of 24 cattle farms in south-west England. Nymphs were divided into 6 pools of 30 from each farm for DNA extraction, PCR, and sequencing. Samples from seven out of the 24 farms tested positive for Babesia , and most were positive for more than one species. Babesia divergens was identified from five farms, and three of these farms had two pooled samples positive for B. divergens , which given the low overall prevalence rate suggests that B. divergens may be highly clustered within the tick population. Most of the remaining positive samples were Babesia venatorum , demonstrating that this zoonotic pathogen is widespread in livestock habitats. The data suggest that B. canis is not yet widely prevalent in established D. reticulatus populations in the UK, but that there is a need to raise awareness of the risk of equine piroplasmosis in areas with endemic D. reticulatus foci, since B. caballi appears more widely established. As a precursor to planned arboviral vector incrimination studies, an integrated systematics approach was adopted using morphology and DNA barcoding to examine the Culex fauna present in Turkey. The mitochondrial COI gene (658 bp) were sequenced from 185 specimens collected across 11 Turkish provinces, as well as from colony material. Although by morphology only 9 species were recognised, DNA barcoding recovered 13 distinct species including: Cx. ( Barraudius ) modestus , Cx. ( Culex ) laticinctus , Cx. ( Cux. ) mimeticus , Cx. ( Cux. ) perexiguus , Cx. ( Cux. ) pipiens , Cx. ( Cux. ) pipiens form molestus, Cx. ( Cux. ) quinquefasciatus , Cx. ( Cux. ) theileri , Cx. ( Cux. ) torrentium , Cx. ( Cux. ) tritaeniorhynchus and Cx. ( Maillotia ) hortensis . The taxon formerly identified as Cx. ( Neoculex ) territans was shown to comprise two distinct species, neither of which correspond to Cx. territans s.s. These include Cx. ( Neo. ) impudicus and another uncertain species, which may be Cx. ( Neo. ) europaeus or Cx. ( Neo. ) martinii (herein = Cx. ( Neo. ) sp. 1). Detailed examination of the Pipiens Group revealed Cx. pipiens , Cx. pipiens f. molestus and the widespread presence of the highly efficient West Nile virus vector Cx. quinquefasciatus for the first time. Four new country records are reported, increasing the Culex of Turkey to 15 recognised species and Cx. pipiens f. molestus . • M. wenyonii isolates were identified from flies collected from a buffalo farm. • M. wenyonii isolates were classified into two subgroups using the 16S rRNA gene. • The 23S rRNA gene showed that two subgroups could be M. wenyonii & related species. • These flies are potential mechanical vectors for hemoplasmas at Thai buffalo farms. Bovine hemoplasmosis is a disease in buffaloes and cattle caused by hemotropic mycoplasmas or hemoplasmas. Only two bovine hemoplasma species, Mycoplasma wenyonii and Candidatus Mycoplasma haemobos, have been described in several countries. Hemoplasmas induce acute hemolytic anemia or chronic infection, leading to production loss. Bovine hemoplasma DNA was also detected in blood-sucking arthropods, suggesting vector transmission in farms. To date, no studies of the molecular detection of bovine hemoplasmas in Thai buffaloes and arthropod vectors have been reported. This study aimed to study the 1-year diversity of hematophagous flies in a buffalo farm located in Chachoengsao province, Thailand, and to investigate the molecular occurrence of bovine hemoplasmas in those flies using a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay and sequence analyses. A total of 1,488 mosquitoes, 867 stable flies, and 312 tabanid flies were collected during this study. The most abundant mosquitoes, stable flies, and tabanid flies were Culex tritaeniorhynchus, Stomoxys calcitrans , and Tabanus megalops , respectively. A total of 249 genomic DNA samples of flies were tested using a PCR assay based on the 16S rRNA gene; 23.69% (59/249) of the insect samples were positive in this assay. Positive samples (n = 8) were subjected to bidirectional sequencing. The BLAST results showed that only three samples from Stomoxys calcitrans and two samples from Tabanus megalops showed 99.90% and 99.17% similarities to the M. wenyonii isolate B003 (MG948626/Water buffalo/Cuba) and the M. wenyonii isolate C124 (MG948625/Cattle/Cuba), respectively. This molecular occurrence of bovine hemoplasmas in blood-sucking flies suggested that those flies are the mechanical vectors for bovine hemoplasmas in Thailand. Based on the phylogenetic analysis of the 16S rRNA gene, the sequences of M. wenyonii were likely classified into two subgroups (A and B), suggesting closely related bovine hemoplasma species. Finally, the genetic analysis of the 23S rRNA gene from these two subgroups revealed that subgroup A could be M. wenynoii and subgroup B may be a subspecies of M. wenyonii or another putative novel species. However, further investigation should be conducted in buffaloes, cattle, and blood-sucking flies to gain more 16S rRNA and 23 rRNA gene sequences of bovine hemoplasmas. • An additional species of the genus Phortica may act as vector of the zoonotic eyeworm in Europe. • Phortica oldenbergi acts as intermediate host for Thelazia callipaeda under experimental conditions. • At the dissection, Thelazia callipaeda L3 were found in P. oldenbergi females. • The role of P. oldenbergi as vector of T. callipaeda should be confirmed under natural conditions. Thelazia callipaeda is a zoonotic nematode parasitizing the eyes of many hosts species, primarily dogs. To date Phortica variegata and Phortica okadai are the only known vectors of this nematode in Europe and China, respectively. In this study we investigated the role played by a third species, Phortica oldenbergi , as vector of T. callipaeda in Europe. Drosophilid flies of this species were collected in central Italy and maintained in laboratory. One hundred forty P. oldenbergi were experimentally infected with T. callipaeda L1 recovered from field collected gravid females belonging to haplotype 1, which is that detected in several countries in Europe. Seventy-four (i.e., 60 females and 14 males) specimens died at 5 days post infection (d.p.i.) (±1) and scored negative for T. callipaeda larvae at the dissection. Sixty-six (i.e., 46 females and 20 males) P. oldenbergi survived and were dissected at 21 d.p.i. From those, T. callipaeda L3 were detected in the proboscis of two females (3.0%). Overall, at the molecular analysis, 11.4% (n = 16/140; 13 females and 3 males) scored positive for the presence of T. callipaeda DNA. Data herein reported brings further insights on the biology of T. callipaeda by adding P. oldenbergi as a new potential intermediate host under experimental conditions. • We analysed Ae. albopictus distribution throughout Brazil from 2015-2020. • In 2015 the vector was confirmed in 14.9% of the Brazilian municipalities sampled. • In 2020 Ae. albopictus was detected in 24.8% municipalities sampled. • Ae. albopictus expanded its geographic distribution in Brazil. Aedes albopictus is native to Asia and is ranked among the top 100 invasive species worldwide, with vector competence for dengue, Zika, and chikungunya viruses. Understanding Ae. albopictus dispersal is essential for effective monitoring and vector control strategies. In this study, we analysed and updated the distribution of Ae. albopictus in Brazil using data available from the Ministry of Health through the Rapid Index Survey for Aedes (LIRA) for the years 2015-2020. The results of this research were mapped to visually represent the current distribution of Ae. albopictus in Brazil. In 2015, the presence of the vector was confirmed in 271 of the 1,820 Brazilian municipalities sampled (14.9%), and in 2020 it was detected in 728 of the 2,937 municipalities sampled (24.8%). In 2020, all Brazilian states had recorded the presence of this critical vector with a broader geographic distribution in the Southeast and Midwest regions as compared to the North, Northeast, and South regions. It was possible to note some stabilization of dispersion of this species in the Brazilian territory. The record of Ae. albopictus distribution advanced in Brazilian states and municipalities from 2015 to 2020; it is suggested that surveys of this vector be conducted periodically in all Brazilian municipalities and authorities should developing control strategies for this species together with Ae. aegypti. • Molecular blood meal detection in Rhodnius robustus during starvation was evaluated. • Recovering of blood meal source occurred until the 13th week of artificial starvation. • No significant difference in weight between nymphs and adults after feeding was seen. • A direct correlation between bug weight and positive blood meal source is suggested. • Nymphs have better starvation resistance to the death than adults, surviving 27 weeks. The identification of Blood Meal Source (BMS) in hematophagous vectors contributes to a better understanding of the ecology of hemoparasite transmission. Those insects can endure long periods without feeding, waiting for a favorable setting. Although this represents an important behavior observed in those groups, such as triatomines, little is known about how time can affect BMS detection, especially considering extended periods. To comprehend to which extent this behavioral phenomenon can impact molecular detection, we submitted two groups of Rhodnius robustus to increasing periods of starvation under experimental conditions. It was possible to recover the BMS until the 12th week of the starvation process. Nymphs were more resistant to prolonged periods of starvation (up to more than 189 days) than adults (maximum of 137 days), with no significant difference between their weights after being fed. Sand flies are the primary vectors of leishmaniasis. Disease management with effective vector control depends on the knowledge of vector population dynamics. In Sri Lanka, despite few isolated entomological collections, long-term studies are not reported to date. In the reported study, monthly entomological surveillance was conducted from May 2017 to December 2018 in Polpithigama, Maho, and Galgamuwa Medical Officer of Health (MOH) areas using standard entomological techniques. Climatic data were collected from the Department of Meteorology, Sri Lanka. Patient records were collected from each MOH office. A total of 38,339 sand flies were collected. The majority were Phlebotomus argentipes (99.50%, n = 38,147), while the rest was Sergentomyia punjabensis (0.50%, n = 192). Wind speed reduces sand fly abundance (r = -0.519, P < 0.05) evidently by limiting the movement. Rainfall increases sand fly abundance (r = 0.842, P <0.05, lag = 6 months) probably by improving favorable conditions in breeding sites. The actual effect of humidity is not conclusive without further research. The observed higher prevalence of leishmaniasis in the study sites could be due to the higher sand fly density in these areas. The number of patients shows a strong positive correlation (r = 0.516, P <0.05) to the sand fly abundance with a lag of 7 months. Systematic surveillance of sand flies as a part of general healthcare services is strongly recommended to identify and prevent possible outbreaks through timely planned vector control measures. • Nine of 42 simuliid species in Malaysia were parasitized by mermithid nematodes. • The number of mermithids per simuliid host larva was 1–3, with a mean of 1.10. • Mermithid distributions were patchy among simuliid hosts and streams. • Parasitism was significantly associated with environmental factors, e.g. temperature. • Patchy parasite distributions suggest strong host–parasite–environment interactions. Mermithids are parasites of black flies that cause host mortality along with physical and behavioural changes in infected hosts. However, there is a lack of knowledge on the distribution of mermithids infecting black fly larvae and the factors that influence these distributions in Asia, including Malaysia. A total of 13,116 mid- to late-instar black fly larvae belonging to 42 species were collected from 138 streams across East and West Malaysia and screened for the presence of mermithid parasites. Overall, 121 mermithids were obtained from 107 (0.82%) larvae of nine (21.4%) black fly species. The average number of mermithids per black fly host was 1.10 ± 0.04 (SE), ranging from one to three mermithids per host. Mermithid infection was highest in Simulium trangense , with a frequency of occurrence of 6.5%, followed by S. cheongi (5.8%) and S. angulistylum complex (2.9%). Infection was lowest in S. brevipar and S. tahanense , with a frequency of occurrence of 0.7% each. Regression analysis indicated that mermithid infections in larval black flies were significantly associated with cooler and shallower streams with more canopy cover, dense riparian vegetation, high dissolved oxygen, and lower conductivity and complete pH. Forward logistic regression further indicated that infections in S. cheongi were associated with shaded, cooler, slightly acidic streams with higher conductivity and dissolved oxygen. Abstract: Little is known about the sylvatic transmission cycle of Trypanosoma cruzi in the Gran Chaco ecoregion. We conducted surveys to identify the main sylvatic hosts of T. cruzi, parasite discrete typing units and vector species involved in Pampa del Indio, a rural area in the humid Argentinean Chaco. A total of 44 mammals from 14 species were captured and examined for infection by xenodiagnosis and polymerase chain reaction amplification of the hyper-variable region of kinetoplast DNA minicircles of T. cruzi (kDNA-PCR). Ten (22.7%) mammals were positive by xenodiagnosis or kDNA-PCR. Four of 11 (36%) Didelphis albiventris (white-eared opossums) and six of nine (67%) Dasypus novemcinctus (nine-banded armadillos) were positive by xenodiagnosis and or kDNA-PCR. Rodents, other armadillo species, felids, crab-eating raccoons, hares and rabbits were not infected. Positive animals were highly infectious to the bugs that fed upon them as determined by xenodiagnosis. All positive opossums were infected with T. cruzi I and all positive nine-banded armadillos with T. cruzi III. Extensive searches in sylvatic habitats using 718 Noireau trap-nights only yielded Triatoma sordida whereas no bug was collected in 26 light-trap nights. Four armadillos or opossums fitted with a spool-and-line device were successfully tracked to their refuges; only one Panstrongylus geniculatus was found in an armadillo burrow. No sylvatic triatomine was infected with T. cruzi by microscopical examination or kDNA-PCR. Our results indicate that two independent sylvatic transmission cycles of T. cruzi occur in the humid Chaco. The putative vectors of both cycles need to be identified conclusively. Abstract: Malaria parasite requires a specific time to replicate and disseminate in the mosquito''s body before transmission to naïve hosts can occur. Vector control has a proven record in the prevention and control of malaria. The evaluation of vector control strategies requires accurate methods of predicting mosquito age. Anopheles stephensi is the principal malaria vector of the desert part of India. The objective of this study was to correlate the age of laboratory reared and field collected adults of An. stephensi with the glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (g6pd) activity. The measurement of g6pd activity was carried out in a UV–vis spectrophotometer. The g6pd activity in the males and females An. stephensi was inversely proportional to their age. A significant correlation of the g6pd activity was recorded between the field collected and laboratory reared mosquitoes. The g6pd activity in the males An. stephensi was found to be significantly higher than the females. Abstract: Metlaoui district in the South-west of Tunisia is a classical focus of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) due to Leishmania major. Since 2005, a single case of CL due to L. killicki has been reported. We report twenty four human cases due to this parasite, affecting men and women from 2 to 70 years old. Leishmania killicki have been typed using molecular techniques: polymerase chain reaction (PCR) followed by restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) and gene sequencing. Four strains from patients have been successfully cultured on NNN medium and isoenzymatically typed as L. killicki MON-8. Our results strongly suggests that Metlaoui is a new L. killicki focus with a stable transmission cycle. Sand flies fauna in the same focus was also studied. 1400 Phlebotomine sand flies (785 males/615 females) have been caught during an entomological survey. Leishmania major DNA has been found in one P. papatasi female, the most abundant species, whereas L. killicki DNA has been found in one Phlebotomus sergenti female emphasizing the probable role of this species as vector of this zoonotic parasite. Abstract: Turkey is located in the middle of Asia, Africa and Europe, close to Caucasia, Balkans and Middle East in subtropical climate zone. Malaria has been known since the early ages of human history and it was one of the leading diseases in Anatolian history, as well. Today, chloroquine-sensitive Plasmodium vivax is the only agent of autochthonous malaria cases in Turkey. The other Plasmodium species identified are isolated from imported cases of malaria. The most common vector of malaria in Turkey is Anopheles sacharovi followed by An. superpictus, An. maculipennis and An. subalpinus. In 2009, pre-elimination stage of Malaria Program was started due to dramatic decline in the number of malaria cases in Turkey (Total, 84; 38 autochthonous cases only in 26 foci in south-eastern Anatolia, and 46 imported cases; incidence: 0.1/100,000). As there were no detected cases of new autochthonous malaria in the first 8 months of 2010, elimination stage was started. The role of the persistent policies and successful applications of the Ministry of Health, such as the strict control of the patients using anti-malarial drugs especially chloroquine, avoidance of resistant insecticides, facilitation of access to patients via Health Transformation Program (HTP), establishment of close contact with the patients’ families, and improvement of reporting and surveillance system, was essential. In addition, improvement maintained in the motivations and professional rights of malaria workers, as well in the coordination of field studies and maintenance of a decline or termination in vector-to-person transmission were all achieved with the insistent policies of the Ministry of Health. Other factors that probably contributed to elimination studies include lessening of military operations in south-eastern Anatolia and the lowering of malaria cases in neighbouring countries in recent years. Abstract: In June, 2003, Egypt''s hospital-based electronic disease surveillance system began to record increased cases of acute febrile illness from governorates in the Nile Delta. In response to a request for assistance from the Egyptian Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization (WHO), the U.S. Naval Medical Research Unit No. 3 (NAMRU-3) provided assistance in identifying the cause and extent of this outbreak. Testing of human clinical samples (n =375) from nine governorates in Egypt identified 29 cases of RVF viremia that spanned the period of June to October, and a particular focus of disease in Kafr el Sheikh governorate (7.7% RVF infection rate). Veterinary samples (n =101) collected during this time in Kafr el Sheikh and screened by immunoassay for RVFV-specific IgM identified probable recent infections in cattle (10.4%) and sheep (5%). Entomologic investigations that focused in rural, rice growing villages in the Sidi Salim District of Kafr el Sheikh during August–September, 2003, collected, identified, and tested host-seeking female mosquitoes for the presence of pathogenic viruses. Three isolates of RVF virus (RVFV) were obtained from 297 tested pools of female mosquitoes and all three RVFV isolates came from Cx. antennatus (Becker). While Cx. pipiens has been considered the primary vector of RVF virus in Egypt and is often the most common man-biting species found, Cx. antennatus was the dominant species captured at the 2003 outbreak location in Kafr el Sheikh governorate. Abstract: Chagas disease is a tropical parasitic disease endemic to Latin America which affects more than 10 million people, and kills more than 15,000 people each year. This condition, caused by the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, is principally transmitted by kissing bugs (Triatominae). In Bolivia, recent reports by the Departmental Health Service showed the presence of Panstrongylus rufotuberculatus in dwellings located in the Charazani Valley (La Paz). A study was then carried out in the area to evaluate the degree of domiciliation of this species, and its possible role in the transmission of Chagas disease. In seven communities, 108 dwellings were visited to actively search for the bugs and 217 people participated in a serological study to determine the prevalence of Chagas disease in the population. Nymphs and adults belonging to two species: Panstrongylus geniculatus (5 insects, 1.5%) and P. rufotuberculatus (344 insects, 98.5%) were collected. One P. rufotuberculatus was captured in a bed, while all the other specimens of this species were found in kitchens in which guinea pigs were being reared. A large bug colony has been encountered in a kitchen environment, with more than 300 specimens of all stages. None of the 201 analyzed bugs was positive for T. cruzi. The seroprevalence of Chagas disease in the human population was low (1.3%); no evidence of a local vectorial transmission was found. In conclusion, for the time being there is no evidence of vectorial transmission of Chagas disease in the region. The possible association between reared guinea pigs and the bugs is discussed. The presence of infected people, the migratory movement of the human population and the relatively high colonization process demonstrate that the region needs to be regularly controlled to prevent the area from becoming a local source of Chagas transmission. Abstract: Anopheles subpictus is a complex of four isomorphic sibling species A, B, C and D and is recognized as a primary vector of malaria, a disease of great socio-economic importance, in Australasian Zone, Celebes, Portuguese Timor and South East Asia and a secondary vector in Sri Lanka. This species is also a vector of some helminth and arboviruses. This species has been reported so far from nineteen countries of the Oriental and Australasian Zones. An. subpictus complex is the most abundant anopheline in most parts of the Indian subcontinent, with a widespread distribution eastwards and southwards to Papua New Guinea, westwards to Iran and northwards to China. Resistance to insecticide is alarming in many parts of the world. Abstract: Anopheles minimus s.l. and Anopheles fluviatilis s.l., two closely related taxa, are reported vectors of malaria in Assam state of India. We determined the DNA sequences of morphologically identified A. minimus s.l. and A. fluviatilis s.l. collected from the Kamrup district in Assam, for two rDNA loci—internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) and D3 domain of 28S rDNA (28S-D3). Analysis of rDNA data revealed that the sequences of both the morphologically identified A. minimus s.l. and A. fluviatilis s.l. from Assam are identical, homologous to the sequences of A. minimus s.s. (former species A) and different from that of all the reported members of the Fluviatilis Complex (species S, T and U). This indicates that A. fluviatilis s.l. being reported in Kamrup district, Assam, in low density, mostly during January to April, is actually a hypermelanic and seasonal variant of A. minimus. It was also found that the banding pattern on chromosome arm 2 (which bears species-diagnostic inversions for the Fluviatilis Complex) of A. minimus and of A. fluviatilis s.l. from Assam is homosequential with A. fluviatilis species U suggesting that probably previously described A. fluviatilis U from Assam were also A. minimus. Abstract: The control of Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL) vector is often based on the application of chemical residual insecticide. However, this strategy has not been effective. The continuing search for an appropriate vector control may include the use of biological control. This study evaluates the effects of the fungus Metarhizium anisopliae var. acridum on Lutzomyia longipalpis. Five concentrations of the fungus were utilized, 1×104 to 1×108 conidia/ml, accompanied by controls. The unhatched eggs, larvae and dead adults previously exposed to fungi were sown to reisolate the fungi and analysis of parameters of growth. The fungus was subsequently identified by PCR and DNA sequencing. M. anisopliae var. acridum reduced egg hatching by 40%. The mortality of infected larvae was significant. The longevity of infected adults was lower than that of negative controls. The effects of fungal infection on the hatching of eggs laid by infected females were also significant. With respect to fungal growth parameters post-infection, only vegetative growth was not significantly higher than that of the fungi before infection. The revalidation of the identification of the reisolated fungus was confirmed post-passage only from adult insects. In terms of larvae mortality and the fecundity of infected females, the results were significant, proving that the main vector species of VL is susceptible to infection by this entomopathogenic fungus in the adult stage. Abstract: The Itwara focus of onchocerciasis covers an area of approximately 600km2 in western Uganda about 20km north of Fort Portal. The vector is Simulium neavei, whose larvae and pupae live in a phoretic association on freshwater crabs. The phoretic host in the Itwara focus is the crab Potamonautes aloysiisabaudiae. Before any onchocerciasis control, ATPs were estimated to reach between 4500 and 6500 infective larvae per person per year. S. neavei was found to be a very efficient vector with 40% of parous flies harbouring developing larvae of Onchocerca volvulus. After 4 years of community-based distribution of ivermectin transmission was still considerable and in 1995 monthly treatment of streams with the larvicide temephos commenced in the first of three sub-foci, and was gradually extended to the whole focus. Biting S. neavei disappeared from the first sub-focus (Itwara main) in June 1996, and the last infested crab was caught in November 1996. In the second sub-focus (Siisa) treatment commenced towards the end of 1995, and the last biting fly was caught in March 1997, but a deterioration in the security situation interrupted the programme (after only three treatments in the third sub-focus). Monthly treatments restarted in the second and third sub-foci (Aswa) in September 1998, and when the situation was reassessed in 2003 no biting flies were found anywhere, and the flies had not reinvaded the first sub-focus, but infected crabs were found in the second and third sub-foci. The last treatments were carried out in April–June 2003, and since then no infested crabs have been found. In summary, no S. neavei-infested crabs have been found anywhere in the focus since June 2003 and the vector is considered eliminated from that date. However, transmission had already been halted since February 2001, when the last biting flies had been collected. The parasite reservoir should die out in the human population by 2016. Abstract: A longitudinal entomological survey for sandflies was conducted from 1989 to 1991 at a focus of enzootic cutaneous leishmaniasis in Northeast Sinai, Egypt, within the border region monitored by multinational peacekeepers. Standardized sampling with CDC light traps, oiled paper “sticky traps”, and human landing collection was employed to determine monthly trends in species composition, density, sex ratio, and reproductive status of vector sandflies. Each collection method independently defined sandfly seasonality as the period May–November in 1990, and March–October in 1991. Plebotomus papatasi was the only anthropophagic species found and comprised more than 94% of the sandfly population. Two population peaks (May, July) were observed for this species in both survey years. Density of P. papatasi in underground bunkers was higher than outside but inflated by a greater proportion of male flies. During 1990, the proportion of gravid P. papatasi increased progressively during the 5 months period from May to September and averaged 29.5% and 29.7% for interior and exterior collections, respectively. Density of P. papatasi was greater during 1991, but proportions of gravid flies were significantly lower in each survey month and averaged 14.9% and 12.3% for interior and exterior collections, respectively. Seasonal rates of Leishmania-infected P. papatasi averaged 0.8% and 0.9% in 1989 and 1990, but fell to zero in 1991, suggesting an unstable focus of Leishmania major transmission. Proportions of gravid flies may be a valid indicator of the physiological age and epidemiologic importance of the vector sandfly population at this focus. Abstract: The molecular biology of disease vectors, particularly mosquitoes, has experienced a remarkable progress in the past two decades. This is mainly attributed to methodological advances and the emerging genome sequences of vector species, which have brought experimental biology to an unprecedented level. It is now possible to determine the entire transcriptome of Anopheles gambiae at a variety of conditions, with a low per-gene effort and cost. Proteomic profiles can be generated for as small samples as the hemolymph, and transient reverse genetic and stable germ line based transgenic analyses can be performed to analyze gene function. High throughput screening for receptors and ligands can be used to characterize interactions between vectors and pathogens. At the current breathtaking rates of data production it is essential to question and evaluate the relevance of laboratory infection models to the real disease transmission systems. The majority of scientific discoveries in mosquito molecular biology have been based on highly inbred laboratory strains and rodent malaria parasite infection models, which may differ substantially to their counterparts that transmit human malaria in the field. This review addresses the recent advances in high throughput transcription analyses of Anopheles responses to infection, and discusses considerations for the use of laboratory malaria infection models. Abstract: In this study, we quantify the home range of Mepraia spinolai, a wild vector of Trypanosoma cruzi, and the abundance of wild mammals during summer and winter seasons in a protected area of north-central Chile. Results revealed significant differences between seasons for home range size and host availability. M. spinolai presented larger home range sizes, and mammal hosts were more abundant in summer, indicating that T. cruzi would have a higher probability of being transmitted during warmer months. Our objectives were to describe and compare the seasonal variations in microclimatic conditions in domestic and peridomestic ecotopes infested by Triatoma infestans, the main vector of Chagas disease, in rural northwestern Argentina. Using data loggers for 4–7 consecutive days in October 2000, February, May and August 2001, microsite (interior of thatched roofs) and ambient temperatures or relative humidity (RH) were recorded simultaneously and compared with an external reference. The damping effects on microsite temperature and ambient RH increased successively from the goat corral to the chicken coop or pig corral, to the storeroom or human habitation. In the interior of the thatched roofs of the habitation and storeroom, average external minima were increased by +5.0 to +5.6 °C in all seasons, and average external maxima were decreased by −4.3 to −5.6 °C in October–May and −10.6 °C in August. On average, the human habitation damped extreme temperatures by 8 °C over a wider range than previously reported. The interior of the thatched roofs of the pig corral and chicken coop exerted intermediate damping effects that varied over seasons, whereas the goat corral''s thatch showed little or no damping effects at all. The adobe-and-thatch habitation and storeroom presented nearly optimal and more suitable conditions for T. infestans populations than other open structures housing animals. Global climate changes are expected to affect peridomestic populations of T. infestans much more than domestic bug populations, provided other local conditions are held constant. Heterogeneous habitat conditions are expected to affect T. infestans population parameters, dispersal, control and infection with Trypanosoma cruzi. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

• Climate change has impact on A. cruzii potential distribution. • Largest Brazilian cities have high suitability for Malaria vector under climate change scenarios. • High touristic areas in Brazilian coasts have increases in malaria vector. Around 27% of South Americans live in central and southern Brazil. Of 19,400 human malaria cases in Brazil in 2018, some were from the southern and southeastern states. High abundance of malaria vectors is generally positively associated with malaria incidence. Expanding geographic distributions of Anopheles vector mosquito species (e.g. A. cruzii) in the face of climate change processes would increase risk of such malaria transmission; such risk is of particular concern in regions that hold human population concentrations near present limits of vector species' geographic distributions. We modeled effects of likely climate changes on the distribution of A. cruzii , evaluating two scenarios of future greenhouse gas emissions for 2050, as simulated in 21 general circulation models and two greenhouse gas scenarios (RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5) for 2050. We tested 1305 candidate models, and chose among them based on statistical significance, predictive performance, and complexity. The models closely approximated the known geographic distribution of the species under current conditions. Under scenarios of future climate change, we noted increases in suitable area for the mosquito vector species in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro states, including areas close to 30 densely populated cities. Under RCP 8.5, our models anticipate areal increases of >75% for this important malaria vector in the vicinity of 20 large Brazilian cities. We developed models that anticipate increased suitability for the mosquito species; around 50% of Brazilians reside in these areas, and ∼89% of foreign tourists visit coastal areas in this region. Although the microbiome of blood-feeding insects serves an integral role in host physiology, both beneficial and pathogenic, little is known of the microbial community of black flies. An investigation, therefore, was undertaken to identify culturable bacteria from one of Malaysia's most common black flies, Simulium tani Takaoka and Davies, using 16S rDNA sequencing, and then evaluate the isolates for antibiotic resistance and virulence genes. • Culicoides midges are haematophagous vectors of economic and health importance. • Hosts are attacked opportunistically and selection may depend on host availability. • A variety of wildlife species are recorded as novel blood hosts. • Culicoides are possibly transfer vectors of zoonosis. Biting midges in the genus Culicoides (Diptera; Ceratopogonidae) are vectors of pathogens that can cause diseases of major economic importance in humans and animals. Identifying host ranges of these biting midges might aid in understanding the complex epidemiology of such diseases, often involving reservoir hosts and multiple species. In this study, we aim to identify bloodmeal origin from engorged female Culicoides biting midges. All bloodfed females were opportunistically collected as part of an ongoing surveillance programme using Onderstepoort light traps in two provinces in South Africa. DNA of individuals was extracted and subjected to PCR targeting the cytochrome B (CytB) gene region of mammals and avians as well as cytochrome oxidase I (COI) for species identification. In total, 21 new reference barcodes were generated for C. bedfordi, C imicola, C. leucosticus, C. magnus , and C. pycnostictus. Seventy-four blood meals were identified, originating from 12 mammal and three avian species. COI sequence data performed well for species delimitation and 54 Culicoides specimens were identified with C. imicola the predominant species identified (41.8%). Generally, Culicoides species feed on a variety of hosts and host availability might be an important factor when selecting a host. Culicoides species thus appear to be opportunistic feeders rather than specialists. This implicates Culicoides as transfer vectors and demonstrates possible transmission routes of arboviruses and other pathogens from wildlife onwards to domestic animals and humans. • Until now, biting behaviour of black flies in Malaysia are still unknown. • The first black fly human-attracted species was reported in Malaysia. • Morphological and molecular analysis confirmed that it was similar to Simulium aziruni ; a Simulium gombakense species-group. Most female black flies in the genus Simulium are blood-sucking flies and they can cause various parasitic diseases in human and animal. A total of 94 species of black flies have been reported in Malaysia, however, their biting behavior and role as vector of infectious agents remain understudied. To fill in this knowledge gap, we attempted to survey adult black flies from field populations in Peninsular Malaysia. In a survey carried out in 2017 at Tasik Kenyir, Terengganu, three females were caught while attracted and landed on human skin. Further morphological and molecular analyses showed that the specimens were identical to Simulium (Gomphostilbia) aziruni Takaoka, Hashim & Chen of the Simulium gombakense species-group. • DNA barcodes successfully identified 90% of Culicoides species from Thailand. • Phylogenetic tree revealed possibility of cryptic species in some Culicoides taxa. • Bloodmeal identification found new records for vertebrate hosts of Culicoides spp. Biting midges of the genus Culicoides Latreille are blood sucking insects of medical and veterinary importance. Many species are vectors of disease agents transmitted to humans and other animals. Therefore, rapid and accurate species identification is essential for appreciation of all aspects of these insects. In this study, DNA barcode efficacy and molecular identification of host blood sources were examined in biting midges from Thailand. A total of 203 barcoding sequences were obtained from 16 Culicoides taxa. Intraspecific genetic divergence varied from 0.28% to 9.90% for specimens collected in Thailand. Despite this high level of genetic variation, DNA barcode identifications in the Barcoding of Life Data System had a considerable success rate (90%). Phylogenetic analyses and distance-based species delimitation methods indicated the possibility of cryptic species in four taxa, namely, Culicoides actoni Smit, C. arakawae Arakawa, C. huffi Causey and C. jacobsoni Macfie. Further investigations will be required to examine the species status of these lineages. Host blood meal identifications from 42 blood engorged females of 10 Culicoides taxa revealed three animal hosts: chicken, cattle and buffalo. Phlebotomine sand flies can transmit several species of the genus Leishmania , that cause leishmaniasis, a serious neglected tropical disease worldwide. Although Mexico is an endemic country for the disease, studies on the biology, ecology, and the identification of blood meal sources of phlebotomine sand flies in some states remain unexplored. For this reason, this study aimed to evaluate the species diversity of sand flies, and identify their blood meal sources in the Biosphere Reserve Los Tuxtlas, Veracruz, an area with a high prevalence of Leishmania infantum. The cumulative sampling effort of sand flies covered 300 trap-nights between March 2011 and May 2013. For estimating species diversity, we calculated the species richness (q = 0), the diversity of the species (q = 1) and the dominant species (q = 2). To identify the blood meal sources, we amplified and sequenced a fragment of ≈400 bp of the vertebrate Cytb gene. A total of 951 specimens belonging to 15 species were collected. Psathyromyia aclydifera and Psychodopygus panamensis were the most abundant species. We were able to identify seven terrestrial vertebrate species, among which human beings were the most common source of the blood meal. In this study, relevant information on the structure of sand fly populations and their blood meal sources was obtained, providing basic and important information about the interactions between sand flies, hosts and Leishmania species. • High levels of genetic diversity at the COI gene suggest the presence of cryptic species within Anopheles tessellatus. • Species delimitation approaches (ABGD, mPTP and RESL) support up to six putative species, some of which are important vectors of human disease. • These findings have potentially important consequences for vector management and disease control. Anopheles tessellatus is a potentially important vector found across South, East and Southeast Asia. While it was formerly considered a formidable vector of human Plasmodium and filarial parasites in the Maldives, and of lesser importance as a vector of human Plasmodium in Sri Lanka and parts of Indonesia, it is currently of little or unknown health importance in many other parts of its range. This study describes the genetic diversity and evolutionary relationships among An. tessellatus populations in nine Asian countries at the COI gene using maximum-likelihood and Bayesian phylogenetic inference tree and cluster-based species delimitation approaches. These analyses reveal exceptional levels of genetic diversity in An. tessellatus populations across its known range, and identify up to six putative species in the newly determined Tessellatus Complex. The existence of such cryptic diversity has potentially important consequences for vector management and disease control. Differences in the ecologies and life histories among these species may have considerable impact on vectorial capacity and may go some way towards explaining why An. tessellatus s.l. has such varying degrees of public health importance across its range. • Formaldehyde-free resin fluorescent powders can be used as mosquito markers. • These type of markers can be successfully used for marking Aedes aegypti females. • Markers had no effect on survival of different age group marked females. • Blood feeding behavior was low impacted by markers. • Tethered flight speed, between marked and unmarked females, was no different. Fluorescent powders are one of the most common external markers used to study mosquito behavior and ecology. For their reliable and practical use, it is important to evaluate their effect on biological parameters such as survival, blood-feeding, and mobility. We evaluated the effect of five different fluorescent powders (Day-Glo ® ECO Series) on the survival of different age cohorts, blood-feeding success, and tethered flight speed on Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus) adult females. For survival analysis, three cohorts (2–5, 6–9 and 10–13 days old) were marked and mortality recorded until all died. To examine the effect of fluorescent powders on female response to blood-feeding, the proportions of unfed, partially fed, and fully engorged females, after being exposed to host blood under two different time sets (20 and 40 min.), were compared. Their impact on female tethered flight speed was evaluated recording their flight for 30 min. with a flight mill. Survival distributions between treatments were not significantly different within each cohort. Blood-feeding was not significantly different among marked or unmarked females at both times of blood exposure, with the exception of Signal Green-ECO 18 and Ultra Violet- ECO 20 (at 20 and 40 min.), in which a higher proportion of partially fed females was observed compared to control females. In relation to flight performance, no statistically significant difference in mean tethered flight speed (m/s), among marked and unmarked mosquito groups, was observed. Our results indicate that the tested powders and application method have few significant impacts on Ae. aegypti survival, blood-feeding success and flight performance, and are thus suitable for investigations of mosquito biology in the environment. • Native to Asia, Ae. albopictus broadly expanded throughtout Brazil and is currently present in 26 of the 27 Brazilian federative units. • Immature forms of Ae. albopictus are frequently found in artificial breeding sites while females have shown anthropophilic behavior despite its eclecticism on blood feeding. • Ae. albopictus shows advantages in intraspecific competition with Ae. aegypti for both immature and adult stages. • The presence of vertical transmission as well as the vector competence presented by Brazilian populations of Ae. albopictus for some arboviruses indicate this species as a potential bridge vector. • The entomological monitoring of Ae. albopictus is of critical relevance and should be an integral part of mosquito surveillance and control. Aedes (Stegomyia) albopictus is a mosquito originating from the Asian continent, which was detected in the Americas in 1985 and Brazil in 1986. Due to its rapid expansion throughout Brazil, this species has already been reported in 26 of the 27 federative units of Brazil. In this review, we evaluate some of the biological, epidemiological and ecological characteristics of Ae. albopictus through critical analysis of their importance in the pathogen transmission dynamics, since its first record in the country. We show that immature forms of this species are frequently found in artificial breeding sites whereas females exhibit anthropophilic behavior despite its eclecticism on blood feeding. In addition, Ae. albopictus shows advantages in interspecific competition with Ae. aegypti for both immature and adult stages. Taking together, these aspects as well as its vector competence indicate that Ae. albopictus could act as a bridge vector between sylvatic and urban pathogen transmission cycles. We conclude by pointing to the need of continuous surveillance of Ae. albopictus in Brazil and raise several questions that still need to be answered. Blackflies (Diptera: Simuliidae) are ecologically and medically important insects but they have been understudied in Malaysia. Accordingly, a study on the temporal variation in diversity and community structure of preimaginal blackflies was conducted for the first time in Malaysia. A total of 865 preimaginal blackflies were collected in 120 samplings from five streams across three monsoon seasons from February 2018 until January 2019. Ten species were recorded and most frequently collected species were Simulium cheongi, Simulium vanluni and Simulium jeffreyi. Relatively common species were Simulium roslihashimi, Simulium tani complex and Simulium trangense. No significant changes of rainfall was observed between three monsoon seasons as well as the seasons with species and physiochemical parameters except acidity (pH) (P < 0.01). Species relative abundance was varied between seasons, as high value of Shannon index (H) was found in northeast monsoon and lowest in the southwest monsoon. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) of all stream variables revealed two PCs that accounted for 61.4% of the total variance of physicochemical characteristics. Regression analysis revealed that species richness was positively and significantly associated with wider, deeper, faster, low conductivity and larger streambed particle with less canopy cover. Forward logistic regression analysis on three frequently collected species (>20%) indicated that S. vanluni and S. jeffreyi were commonly associated with wider, deeper and fast-flowing streams with low conductivity and larger streambed particle. In contrast, S. cheongi was associated with smaller, slower and small streambed particle. This first extensive bimonthly study has uncovered the species community structure as well as the changes of stream physicochemical parameters over time although they were not greatly and significantly influenced by the monsoon seasons. Species distribution, richness and abundance, however, were highly determined by the stream width, depth and velocity, therefore, were vital in shaping diversity and community structure of preimaginal blackflies. • Bluetongue virus is transmitted by Culicoides species. • Molecular diagnosis was conducted in Culicoides midges collected in Algeria. • The presence of 14 species were identified in Algeria. • Geographic distribution and potential role of bluetongue virus transmission was discussed in identified species. Bluetongue is a serious vector-borne viral disease that infects wild and domestic ruminants. The causative virus is transmitted by midges of the genus Culicoides , which consists of at least 1350 species worldwide. Since 1998, bluetongue disease has spread to Europe and northern Africa, including Algeria. To better understand the distribution of Culicoides species in Algeria, adult midges were collected from 17 different regions in Algeria from 2009 to 2015. At first, 492 specimens were grouped into 52 batches by wing patterns and geographic area of Algeria. Analysis of 60 nucleotide sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) gene showed that the presence of 14 species including five unknown species, which were belonged to seven distinct subgenera. At least five species (C. imicola, C. obsoletus, C. puncticollis, C. kingi , and C. newsteadi) were discussed as potential vectors of bluetongue virus (BTV). Phlebotomine sand flies are the only proven vectors of leishmaniases, a group of human and animal diseases. Accurate knowledge of sand fly species identification is essential in understanding the epidemiology of leishmaniasis and vector control in endemic areas. Classical identification of sand fly species based on morphological characteristics often remains difficult and requires taxonomic expertise. Here, we generated DNA barcodes of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COI) gene using 159 adult specimens morphologically identified to be 19 species of sand flies, belonging to 6 subgenera/species groups circulating in Peru, including the vector species. Neighbor-joining (NJ) analysis based on Kimura 2-Parameter genetic distances formed non-overlapping clusters for all species. The levels of intraspecific genetic divergence ranged from 0 to 5.96%, whereas interspecific genetic divergence among different species ranged from 8.39 to 19.08%. The generated COI barcodes could discriminate between all the sand fly taxa. Besides its success in separating known species, we found that DNA barcoding is useful in revealing population differentiation and cryptic diversity, and thus promises to be a valuable tool for epidemiological studies of leishmaniasis., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier B.V.
